Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Anyways, I've been checking various users for activity and one particular user, Riley1sCool has not been seen since last month. Because of this, unless he states otherwise, both My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen are currently up for grabs for those wanting to do entries on them.

[tup] Prismo, Hosea.

What's the work?

Gotham is an unapologetically zany adaptation of the Batman mythos, starring a young Bruce Wayne as he finds the resolve to become the Dark Knight while James Gordon deals with corruption and the massive assembly of super-powered psychopaths that begin popping up in the titular city.

One of the more minor supporting characters? Ivy Pepper, the young, abused daughter of the man framed for killing Bruce’s parents, with her father in turn getting killed in a shootout with Gordon’s partner, Harvey Bullock. She spends most of the show as a depressed companion for Selina Kyle, a young street rat who gets frequently dragged into Bruce’s bullshit. Partway through, however, she gets attacked by a supervillain that ages her up into a young adult… and she proceeds to become a brainless Femme Fatale wannabe, helping Penguin get back into power with the mob but otherwise being disrespected and ignored by everyone.

Seeking respect, Ivy takes some magic drug medicine vials… and what emerges is much different from what she was before.

Who is Poison Ivy?

Aged up even further with a significantly altered personality, Ivy is now… well, essentially just her comic self. A misanthrope who is more plant than human, and hates the latter for murdering her children. Immediately killing the robber who woke her up from her transformation when he tries to get creepy with her, Ivy takes a stroll through Gotham and sees all the pollution choking life out of the city, and resolves to do something about it.

Selina, recognizing Ivy, teams up with her–after a brief scuffle in which Ivy tests out her new nail-polish poison on her as a power-play, showing off how she can horrifically turn people into plants with a mere scratch–to rob a rich family by dousing them all with hypnotizing perfume. Unfortunately, Ivy has ulterior motives in doing this. The father of the family works for Wayne Enterprises–one of the biggest polluters in the city–and Ivy steals some top-secret documents from him before killing him with the poison.

From there, Ivy heads to Bruce himself and gets him to spill the beans on the top-secret project (using Lazarus Pit water to accelerate plant growth), before giving him an extra-slow-acting version of the poison as revenge for all that his company has done. Only Lucius Fox, a former Wayne employee now working with the police, is aware of where the Lazarus water is, so Ivy grabs him while hypnotizing everyone in the precinct, ensuring that anyone trying to track her down–i.e. Gordon–will be considerably hampered. Even when this ultimately fails, Ivy just warns Gordon about what she’s done to Bruce and sends Fox running away with an antidote, ensuring Gordon will be more focused on catching Fox and saving Bruce than stopping her.

With the Lazarus water, Ivy upgrades her poison to an airborne pollen form, setting out to test it on Harvey–the man who made her an orphan. She initially has bad luck tracking him down–he’s not at his usual bar, leaving her to poison some of his friends instead as a message–but when Harvey tries to personally track her down, Ivy just hypnotizes him, has him call Gordon and lure him out to a secluded place, then orders him to kill Gordon and then himself.

While she leaves them to hash that out, she hypnotizes several criminals and attacks a Wayne-sponsored high-society dinner party, intending to poison everyone there as the first step to returning Gotham to nature by smuggling her pollen-carrying plants into all of the tables’ floral arrangements. Gordon and Harvey, of course, survive, and lead the cops to stop her, but Ivy just orders her minions to kill everyone so she can escape in the chaos. She flees back to her hideout… where Selina is waiting for her, and they get into a fight over the last vial of Lazarus water. Selina destroys it, and the two prepare to kill each other–Ivy with her poison-tipped hands around Selina’s throat, Selina with a knife to Ivy’s stomach–but Selina drops her weapon, convincing Ivy to let her go for the sake of their once-friendship… but not without a warning to stay out of her way.

Fast-forward to Season 5, and Gotham has devolved into a lawless No Man’s Land. Ivy has taken over the city park, where she kills anyone who bothers her, but she soon gets captured by some civilians who want to burn her in revenge. Bruce, looking for a powerful “witch” who could heal Selina from a recent spinal injury, comes across this. Ivy convinces him that she’s an innocent victim and promises to give him a special magic plant that can save Selina if he frees her… and, when he does so, she proceeds to quickly kill her captors. Still, Bruce convinces her to spare him and hold up to her end of the deal

Bruce: I can see there's no good left in you. If you were trying to help this park flourish, it would be full of beauty and color. Instead it smells of death.
Ivy: (a little embarrassed/insulted) ...It's a work in progress.
Bruce: It's a nightmare.
Ivy: (exasperated) If I do help you, you'll leave me alone?

Unfortunately, that’s not the last we see of her. By the end of the season, Gordon has been getting Gotham relatively on-track again. The two major issues are cleaning all the toxins out of the water supply and getting the gangs to stop fighting, so if he can get a ceasefire going, then Gotham will be one step closer to going back to being a city-shaped hellhole instead of just a normal hellhole!

This severely clashes with Ivy’s agenda of making Gotham a human-free green paradise, so she sets about a plan, hypnotizing both Bruce and notorious assassin Victor Zsasz. Ivy sends the former to sabotage the plant being used to detoxify the water supply, arming him with some of her hypnotizing perfume to take care of anyone who could stop him, while having the latter try to assassinate Gordon. Gordon is left in a coma and Zsasz is apprehended, but she sneaks into the police precinct to bust him out, sending him to distract the other cops while she finishes the job. In the ensuing scuffle, Ivy is shot, but breaks the vial of medicine that was going to be used to resuscitate Gordon before making her escape…

And that’s the last we see of her. Selina stops Bruce and Gordon will-powers himself back to life, leaving Ivy to lick her wounds as the city repairs itself in the coming weeks.

Is she magnificent?

Ivy at the start was a brat, then a ditz. This final transformation, however? Terrifyingly intelligent without any of the immaturity of her previous incarnations, quick-thinking, and almost always a few steps ahead of everyone. She always comes exceedingly close to seeing her goals through, and when she fails, she’s able to walk away with some honor (eg. sparing Selina) or escape without consequence.

Her relationship with Selina takes a significant beating–their last interaction has Ivy setting a murderous thug on her–but it’s kept somewhat sympathetic by repeatedly emphasizing that, no matter how much she’s changed in both body and mind, she was still once an orphan street rat who had no one else she could rely on, and some glimmers of their friendship still remain. They’re just deeply, deeply buried.

Of course, she does still have the usual Poison Ivy motives, and is therefore…you know, a major misanthrope. But it’s still rooted in that kinship with plantlife to (again) keep it relatively sympathetic, and is nowhere near as unhinged as many of the other villains in the show.

Too much of a bastard?

Ivy does have usual Poison Ivy motives, with all the mass murder that ensues. That said, well… I’ve said it before, and I’ll probably say it many more times, but Gotham is a hellhole full of completely monstrous murderers and psychopaths. Ra’s al Ghul and the Court of Owls try to release a horrifying Hate Plague, we’ve got Scarecrow and the Mad Hatter and two versions of the Joker running rampant to cause death and insanity to their hearts’ content. Ivy’s plans are pretty bad, but in this setting they’re nowhere near bad enough to be disqualifying.

Rambo utterly dismantles the town's infrastructure and outsmarts the National Guard, only beaten when he willingly stands down. Building off of this impressive introduction, Rambo goes on to save multiple POWs from a Vietnamese war camp; lead a rebellion in Afghanistan against horrid Soviet invaders; and rescue a group of missionaries from war criminals in Burma, all with his trademark quick-thinking guerilla tactics. After decades of settling down and taking young Gabriela as his surrogate daughter, Rambo tears a warpath to find her when she is kidnapped and killed by traffickers, whom Rambo proceeds to viciously wipe out by luring them to his booby-trapped, war-ready ranch. Rambo is capable of withstanding brutal torture, pragmatically weaponizes anything he can get his hands on, and always comes out on top in his missions to destroy monsters that hurt others.

[up] Both games have overarching narratives that they follow. Said plots revolve around helping a specific said of characters uncover a mystery relating to their school principal and ultimately putting an end to their scheme as well as saving the students they had imprisoned, this story isn't some tacked-on thing either, it makes up the crux of the games and is what each mission is building up to. And it ultimately does result in a good ending both times. So it does have a plot, and I wouldn't call it pure exploitation either as it does have a proper story with other elements beyond mindless gore. Hope that clears things up.

This is a proposal that could go either way depending on how one sees it, so let's just discuss it:

What is the work in question?

Diamond Jack is an animated short video made by Rachel Kim with music by Connor Spiotto released in 2017. It is set in a hotel where a valued diamond is kept, until, look at that, the diamond disappears.

Who is the thief?

The unnamed thief, disguised as a waiter, is of course the one who stole the diamond. When the unnamed detective runs to the crime scene, he seems to instantly recognize her, which leads the thief to activate the roller skates on her feet and run away, escaping from the building through a window with the diamond at hand and evading the police team's shots.

The thief then tries to hide by entering inside of a casino, up until she is catched by one of the officers, so she just hides behind a curtain and instantly disappears through the window. Now escaping through the cornice, she is stopped by the detective on a helicopter who orders her to give up the diamond. It seems at first that she is going to give up the diamond to the detective, except she's actually only using his hand as support to reach the other building, where she falls down until ending on the back of a van which takes her to a bridge on the road.

The thief then leaves the van and continues escaping with her skates. It is then when she opens the diamond and we discover something: there was an explosive inside the diamond, which is 40 seconds from exploding now, but the thief is now surrounded by the detective and the police blocking the bridge. The thief still manages to evade all of them and escapes with the explosive after throwing the empty diamond to the detective, later grabbing a helicopter that takes her to the top of the bridge, where she's able to throw the explosive to the air, exploding without anyone being hurt, but with the police still catching and capturing the thief nevertheless.

Is she magnificent?

This is the easy part, being your typical Lupin the Third wannabe, she steals the diamond and evades capture with ease, being determined to her goal no matter what, and pulling many clever techniques like hiding behind the curtains or using the detective's hand to reach the next building to escape while being filled with charm and personality to the brim.

Is she a bitch?

Ok so, uh, the complicated part.

She at first seems to fill this easily too, what with being a literal thief stealing the diamond and evading capture from the police, but it is then when we discover that inside of the diamond there was an explosive, and the video ends with the thief leaving the diamond and throwing the explosive to the air so that no one is hurt by it.

So uh, the question is, was she aware from the beginning that there was a bomb in the diamond, and if so, was the stealing completely altruistic? Or was she not aware of such while stealing it and only discovered it midways through?

The lyrics to the song seem to lean towards the former, talking about how "you can't see the good inside me" and that "I'm not the villain I appear to be" indicating that she was aware of the bomb from the beginning and that she just wanted to save everyone.

But even if that's the case, you can still argue she could've just told the authorities about the explosive so they could've dealt with it more carefully and safely, and yet she instead choose to steal the diamond and evade the police without telling anyone her reasons, while potentially endangering people if she wasn't able to find a place to throw the bomb at time. I mean, the police still arrest her at the end even after seeing her throwing the bomb away, since she regardless still committed a crime and put people in danger, so if you see it this way, I still think she is immoral enough.

Verdict?

It will all depend on whether or not you think she is enough of a bitch, personally I can lean towards a yes, but I will let you guys decide.

I’m not entirely satisfied with this writeup. Any suggestions before I add it to the Drafts?

  • Fallout: New Vegas mod Race to the Bottom (link): Hosea is the leader of The Vultures, a resistance movement dedicated to preserving the Mojave’s independence from the NCR. A former Follower of the Apocalypse, Hosea grew disillusioned with the Followers’ pacifism and took to raiding supply caravans to both weaken the NCR and attract recruits by distributing the supplies to the people of New Vegas. Hosea is willing to take the fight to civilians if necessary, robbing and later murdering Ella Hawthorne to send a message to NCR citizens to leave Freeside. After discovering the hydroponic farms in Vault 23, Hosea suggests the Courier kill NCR troops to keep their location secret, then will make plans to distribute the farms’ produce to the poor, both for its own sake and to recruit more people to the Vultures. Hosea’s end goal is to weaken the NCR enough that after they defeat the Legion at Hoover Dam, they will be weakened enough that the people of the Mojave can force them out. While he proves multiple times that he is not without kindness, Hosea is nonetheless willing to kill as many as he has to to keep the NCR from taking control of Vegas.

Anyone who knows Gundam 00 can give me suggestion before add to draft ^^

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 : Regene Regetta is an enigmatic Innovade who shares the same DNA as Tieria Erde. He is also a member of "Innovator" and acts as Ribbons' second-in-command. During his introduction to Tieria Erde, Regene calmly tells Tieria about their origins as Innovades, asks him to join his side to change the world, then allows him to think about his offer. Regene never engages in battle against Gundam himself, but chooses to observe the situation and gain information with his quantum brainwaves, and has no problem working for any side without arousing anyone's suspicions, including the other Innovades. Realizing Ribbons only cares about his motivation to be the messiah of the world instead of guiding humanity to the future, Regene sends Wang Liu Mei to give VEDA the location of the Celestial Being, then revives Tieria Erde and helps him to reconnects with VEDA to disable any "Innovator" weaponry. Upon seeing Setsuna completing his evolution as a "pure-breed Innovator", Regene gives a lecture to Ribbons' other followers about human evolution and praises Setsuna for becoming the first "pure-breed Innovator" and trusts him to use his new power to guide humanity into a better future.
