Misused: The Dog Shot First

The dog shot first is about a story being retconned so that cold-blooded murder becomes self-defense. Because the most famous example is the Han Solo scene and the trope name looks a lot like the meme "Han shot first" it's attracting misuse.

Wick check on 44 randomized examples:

As you can see, the meme is referenced a lot, probably because of the name. Speaking of names, "The dog shot first" doesn't convey that it's about retconning at all, unless you know the Han shot first meme. The current name leads to incorrect examples where character A kills B before B can do anything and potholes because of the meme.

I'd propose to change the trope name into something else, a few quick ones I could come up with are:

• Adaptional self-defense
• The adaption shot first
• The original shot first
• Film me once: I kill you, film me twice: after you

I'm also noticing that the "shoot first ask questions later" scenario also crops up a lot with this trope, where could we move those cases to?

Agreed, and I know that it is an issue for another forum, but the few real-life examples posted should really be vanquished.

I can't deal with these forums; they anger up the blood too much.

Adaptional self-defense was actually the only title I wanted to propose. I came up with the other ones on the fly because I read it was good form to present multiple titles.

On the real life section of this trope, do we need to reach a consensus about its removal? I don't want to rush things and I didn't see any requirements to add something to No Real Life Examples, Please!

Some examples (including the entire RL section) are about the current trope played in-universe: characters excusing their actions retro-actively by falsely claiming they where attacked first. Is this a trope worth having?

Split those examples to a separate trope on the Trope Launch Pad, please.

Also, Adaptional Self-Defense works for me, with an additional redirect to Revisional Self-Defense since that better describes the Star Wars example, given that tropes are flexible.

You are correct. Even if trying a dozen names, the first one might still be the best. I think it is covered by Wounded Gazelle Gambit. I've been stuck on names like this; Retcon Self Defense, Retcon The Aggressor, Revision Changes The Aggressor, etc. Not really happy with the way it may not be clear from falsely claiming self-defense.
