Unreleased Work Page Cleanup (Speculation, Spoilers, ZCE etc.)

Go To

This is a thread for checking up on pages for works that have not been released yet, to make sure that they are not straying into rampant speculation or posting crazy behind the scenes spoilers. You can bring both individual examples or entire pages to attention here.

In extreme cases, any page can be locked, but hopefully that won't be necessary.

(As these pages often are hit with zero-context examples and shoehorning as well, all four - speculation, spoilers, ZCEs, and shoehorning may get addressed simultaneously.)

The policy governing this effort is Creating A Work Page For An Unreleased Work. Cleanup is being tracked using the Unreleased Works sandbox.

All pages for unreleased works should include a %% comment at the top of the page, confirming the policy and linking to this thread and the Administrivia page. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the example provided here, but this provides a template to work with.

Template for the unreleased work comment
%%
%% Speculative troping is not allowed on TV Tropes.
%%
%% We trope what DOES happen in works, not what MIGHT happen or is LIKELY to happen.
%%
%% For unreleased works where all we have to go on is advertising and other supplemental materials, we have some detailed guidelines, which can be found at Administrivia/CreatingAWorkPageForAnUnreleasedWork.
%%
%% NOTE - these rules also mean that unreleased works should only have one page image, and that image should NOT be changed again until the work is released.

Crud. I meant I just want to save it on my computer for future use when it’s confirmed and no longer violates rules.

~RallyBot2, why did you cutlist Sandbox.Yandere Simulator Final Game? HighCrate moved the "tropes from the final game" folder to a sandbox "so that entries that also apply to preview releases can be retrieved." Was that all done? The page was cut, but it's still linked in the description of Yandere Simulator.

The page was entirely comprised of Speculative Troping. To put it plainly, that's not allowed. Tropes can be added once they apply to the final work or promotional material.

[up]You should have discussed it here first, considering it was created because of this thread.

I see no reason to keep a page which exists to blatantly violate our rules. If the examples were legitimate, they could have been on the work page.

This is the same as adding pre-commented-out examples: We just don't do it.

[up]It's more like commenting out existing examples, since that sandbox wasn't made to violate the rules. It was created by HighCrate to store the contents of the "Tropes For the Final Game" folder on Yandere Simulator to see if they could be rehabilitated: see this post. HighCrate was an infamous stickler for the rules, so if he created it, it's pretty safe to say its existence is in line with our policy. I'm requesting a mod restore it.

Yeah, I'm with rjd on this one. Cutting a sandbox for "not following the rules" is completely missing the point of why we use them.

Forgive me for not remembering something from two thousand posts earlier in the thread.

It probably shouldn't have been linked from the main work page, since that just made it look to me like a "here's where we're putting the tropes we're not allowed to put on the page" page.

I am inclined to agree that these rules should not apply to sandboxes. By definition these are for unfinished stuff that does not necessarily comply with all the rules yet.

Again, the problem was that it was linked from the work page, effectively saying "here's all the tropes for the unreleased stuff on this handy little subpage." Since that link's obviously gone, the sandbox can and should be restored.

A far better course of action would be to delete the links to the sandbox and leave it as it.

Since it looks like it was cut by mistake, can I ask on the locked pages thread for it to be restored? I'm fine with getting rid of the link, though I think it should be mentioned in the commented-out note.

People have been adding tropes to Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers that are hidden from the start and are adding tropes to the characters page without any citations.

So, quick question: since Shin Sakura Taisen the Animation is going to premiere this April, should I create a Sandbox page for it if it's possible?

[up][up] How to Write an Example says that this is bad.

  • Do Not Use Comment Tags to Pre-hide Examples: While existing examples that violate a rule, such as Zero-Context Examples or uncited examples for works that haven't released, may be hidden with comment tags to encourage users to fix them, never add a new example that is already commented out. It's considered lazy, sneaky, and underhanded, and repeated offenses lead to quick suspensions.

I got rid of these examples.

Just remember: What happens in sandboxes stays in sandboxes. You shouldn't be linking there from the main wiki unless you have a damn good reason. (See what happened higher up on this page.)

I have created a page for the upcoming novel Star Wars: Shadow Fall and wanted to let this thread now so that anyone who wishes can keep an eye on it to make sure it stays compliant with this threads standards.

Until now we only had a release date, but a preview excerpt was published in io9.com, which means we now have genuinely tropable source material for the novel.

All trope entries so far are sourced from that preview excerpt. Any refinement to the text will be greatly appreciated.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team was littered with speculation/uncited tropes from the upcoming remake. Literally the entire folder had to be commented out because there was nothing there worth keeping. All the tropers who made speculative edits have been notified and asked to add sources. (Hopefully they'll also help clean up the ZCEs plaguing the page.

From the looks of it, every single trope there comes straight from the demo. I’d plug that in myself, but I’m not on a good device to do so right now.

Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna:

  • Retcon: There was never any indication in any of the previous installments in the Adventure continuity that suggests only kids can be DigiDestined and have to part ways with their partners as they grow up. While this is somewhat justified in that the only ones ever seen were kids themselves, it still goes against how Maki Himekawa was considered one despite being a young adult, and that the 02 Epilogue depicted all of the DigiDestined as adults and still with their partners.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The promotional material has so far made little mention of anything directly related to tri. outside of taking place after a five-year timeskip. As such its still unknown where Meiko is in all this, and what happened to Maki Himekawa, Alphamon, the Mysterious Man, and Jesmon after the former two just vanished in Coexistence, the Mysterious Man went to claim Diablomon and Demon's data, and Jesmon vanished in Our Future.
  • Author's Saving Throw: After the infamous treatment of the Digimon Adventure 02 cast in tri., this movie puts them in a far more active and helpful role. The very first trailer even focuses on them specifically.
  • Family-Unfriendly Aesop: The reasoning behind why the Digimon partners have to leave upon the humans growing up, which is the loss of idealism and potential to shape the future is seen to imply this for some.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: In light of the announcement that even this installment will not oust the infamous 02 epilogue from canon, the special is already falling into this for fans, before it has been released.

The first two should wait as it might be explained in work. Author's Saving Throw I'd be inclined to cut as they Might be Advertised Extras (thought on formalizing a AST ban on pre-release?). Family-Unfriendly Aesop sounds way to soon to judge as we don't know if that will be presented as an Aesop and looks like the complaining there's a cleanup thread on the trope over. Fanon Discontinuity might work, but I think Tainted by the Preview fits better as it might be surprisingly accepted by fans. Cut?

~nombretomado suggested I post this here (originally posted on the Locked Pages: Lock, UnLock and Edit requests ) for vetting:

For Final Fantasy VII Remake:

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: In the Theme Song Trailer, Sephiroth effortlessly cuts through a metal catwalk with his Masamune — a nodachi longer than he is tall.

  • Adaptation Name Change: Don Corneo's pet monster was named "Aps" in the original version of Final Fantasy VII, but is shown in the playable demo to have been renamed Abzu in the remake.

  • Badass Biker: One of the new characters is Roche, a renegade SOLDIER 3rd Class obsessed with motorcycles, high speeds, and battling strong opponents — earning him the nickname "Speed Demon". In the Theme Song Trailer, he is shown picking a fight with both Shinra's grunts and Avalanche, and is particularly interested in duelling Cloud.
Roche: Hahahahaha! Aren't we havin' a wonderful time kickin' the hornet's nest! You know what I want... a second dance. Just the two of us...

  • Blade Lock: In the Theme Song Trailer, Cloud is shown leaping at Sephiroth with his Buster Sword in an attempt to cut him in half, only for Sephiroth to nonchalantly block his attack with the Masamune as a Mythology Gag to the beginning of their duel in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: President Shinra, CEO of the Shinra Electric Power Company, is shown in the Theme Song Trailer and Twitter posts to be a greedy and ruthless tyrant who rules over Midgar through fear, crushing those who oppose him with his corporation's private army and the Turks.

  • The Don: The Theme Song Trailer shows off Don Corneo, a lecherous crime-lord in Sector 6's slums who takes a new woman as his "bride" each night before feeding them to his pet monster Abzu when he's done having his way with them.

  • Humanoid Abomination: The Theme Song Trailer shows off some glimpses of Jenova, a planet-eating alien entity that manifests as a female-looking humanoid. One of her more monstrous boss forms is shown at the end of the trailer as well.

  • Mad Scientist: The Theme Song Trailer shows off Professor Hojo, the head of the Shinra Corporation's Science Research Division and mastermind behind the SOLDIER Program, observing Cloud's interactions with Sephiroth and gleefully stating that his Reunion Theory hypothesis has been proven correct.

  • Middle-Management Mook: The Theme Song Trailer introduces several of Shinra's department heads, most of whom are ruthlessly ambitious and cruel:
    • Heidegger — the Shinra Company's Head of Public Safety (read: the military) — is shown advocating for the use of extreme force against Avalanche and disparaging his more benevolent colleague Reeve for protesting the civilian casualties that would ensue.
    • Scarlet — the Shinra Company's sadistic Head of Weapons Development — is shown forcing a Shinra grunt to serve as a footstool while she reclines in an opulent chair.
    • Palmer — the head of the Shinra Company's space program — is shown gushing about how much he loves to put butter in his tea.
    • Professor Hojo — the head of the Shinra Corporation's Science Research Division — is stated on the game's Twitter page to have no regard for human life in his highly unethical experiments, and is shown spying on Cloud and gleefully remarking that his hypothesis has been proven correct.

  • Skull for a Head: A Freeze-Frame Bonus glimpse of Jenova's boss form in the Theme Song Trailer shows her face is a fanged skull with sunken eyes.

  • Sword Drag: When Roche challenges Cloud to a duel in the Theme Song Trailer, he's shown dragging his longsword along the ground.
