Unreleased Work Page Cleanup (Speculation, Spoilers, ZCE etc.)

Go To

This is a thread for checking up on pages for works that have not been released yet, to make sure that they are not straying into rampant speculation or posting crazy behind the scenes spoilers. You can bring both individual examples or entire pages to attention here.

In extreme cases, any page can be locked, but hopefully that won't be necessary.

(As these pages often are hit with zero-context examples and shoehorning as well, all four - speculation, spoilers, ZCEs, and shoehorning may get addressed simultaneously.)

The policy governing this effort is Creating A Work Page For An Unreleased Work. Cleanup is being tracked using the Unreleased Works sandbox.

All pages for unreleased works should include a %% comment at the top of the page, confirming the policy and linking to this thread and the Administrivia page. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the example provided here, but this provides a template to work with.

%%
%% For unreleased works where all we have to go on is advertising and other supplemental materials, we have some detailed guidelines, which can be found at Administrivia/CreatingAWorkPageForAnUnreleasedWork.

The R thing could be some other title trope, but it isn't alliterative and should be removed.

Time Skip is definitely valid, because there's clear Word of God.

Also about the Rise of Skywalker: does Wham Line fit? I've seen a few Wham tropes applied to trailers and they always feel like knee-jerk reactions, since they're supposed to be about plot twists, and if something is shown in the teaser trailer, it's unlikely it was meant to be a plot twist.

[up] Wham Line is shoehorned here. Cut it.

[up] The Wham Line entry has been cut.

And there's a lock request on The Rise of Skywalker here and on the YMMV page here.

Now, I think it's safe to restore all of the content that was previously deleted from the Star Wars 9 page
Not all the information was correct. It was cut partly because it was overflowing with speculation. We can add tropes as they exist rather than letting speculation run wild.

I'm crossing my fingers here that this isn't a prelude to another Revenge of the Jedi situation here.

About YMMV.The Rise Of Skywalker

Palpatine being spoiled out. I assume since it's in the trailers it's not supposed to be a spoiler?

  • Win Back the Crowd: Following the divisiveness of the last installment, the excitement for this one is near universal following The Reveal that Palpatine is back.
    • In general, the reveal trailer for the film has been hugely well-received, to the point that even many who disliked The Last Jedi are saying the film looks promising. The notoriously divided fanbase seems to be, for the first time in decades, mostly in agreement that the film looks pretty good. Only time will tell if the movie manages to truly mend the rifts and live up to hopes.

The Last Jedi also had a promising trailer, but... I believe Win Back the Crowd shouldn't be added until the work releases and we can judge. Win The Crowd a better fit?

FYI, both the main work page and YMMV page have had locks slapped on them; hopefully some measure of rigorous clean-up can be applied and get to stick. Maybe we'll even get to unlock it before release.

Good call.

So, should we post trope suggestions on this thread or on the Locked Pages one? I just want to double check.

Given the mess we ran into so often with YMMV.The Last Jedi, I'm all for locking YMMV.The Rise Of Skywalker

[down] And I'm agreeing with the decision to do so.

[up] I also agree with the decision to lock that page. And like nombretomado said, the mods can unlock it around the time of its release if I'm correct.

I also agree with locking the page. The Star Wars pages are some of the few that we have had serious pre-release edit wars over, so a preemptive lock is a good idea.

I'm still a little worried about Palpatine's The Bus Came Back entry, even with the Word of God, but I guess the example is vague enough that it works with the trailer.

That's why I made a rewrite for the thread to approve which specifically details what's happening and gives full context. I'm not certain it should count because Disney Villain Death is not a way to Put on a Bus.

This example can definitely go under the Memetic Mutation entry in YMMV.The Rise Of Skywalker.

  • Luke's line "No one's ever really gone..." resonated with the entire fandom, which then proceeded to joke about characters other than Palpatine coming back from the dead. In and out of the franchise.

For Shin Sakura Wars, I would like to run these examples through this thread before I can add it based off the trailer and press release:

  • As Long as There Is Evil: By 1928, the battles in Tokyo, Paris and New York have ended on a high note with the demons defeated and the world was at peace. Unfortunately, it didn’t last very long with the Great Demon War devastating the Flower Divisions in Tokyo, Paris and New York City, and the Imperial Theater falling into disrepair by the time Kamiyama arrived in Tokyo, all in a span of 12 years.
  • Distant Sequel: Shin Sakura Wars takes place 12 years after So Long, My Love, by which point the Imperial, Paris and New York Combat Revues have been lost in the Great Demon War, the World Combat Revue War competition has been organized, Sumire has taken Ogami’s place as the combat revue’s commander, and a new Flower Division has been established.

Would those work?

Regarding The Rise of Skywalker, what would be the trope of a trailer making a callback to a trailer for a previous film?

The first tagline featured in the teaser was "Every Generation has a Legend". The thing is, the first teaser for the The Phantom Menace (and thus for the entire prequel trilogy) had that same tagline (although with an added ellipses), as explained here.

This would be a Mythology Gag, because it's repeating a previous bit of marketing with a new context.

Concrete information about the characters in The Mandalorian, as well as footage from the show were released today at the Star Wars Celebration panel for the show.

The following trope examples can be derived from the footage and the panel:

  • Action Girl: Kara Dune, an ex-Rebel shocktrooper skilled enough to go toe-to-toe with a Mandalorian warrior.
  • Bounty Hunter: Like the Fetts before him, the Mandalorian is one of the best bounty hunters around. Grif serves as handler for a whole bunch of them.
  • Cool Starship: The Razor Crest, the ship the protagonist uses for transportation, is a military surplus gunship with considerable firepower.
  • The Handler: Grif Cargo serves as the main contact for a group of bounty hunters which includes the protagonist, informing them about jobs.
  • Interquel: The series starts 5 years after the Battle of Endor, placing it some 25 years before The Force Awakens.
  • No Place for a Warrior: Kara Dune used to be a Shock Trooper for the Rebellion, but she is having a hard time reintegrating into society now that the war is over.

Are these tropes concrete enough to merit recreating the page?

Since the work isn't out yet, they're all speculation because they fail to cite where we get the information from.

The trailer for the seventh season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars was revealed today, and I wanted to ask if these tropes are OK for rebooting the page:

  • Late-Arrival Spoiler:
    • Ahsoka standing next to Bo-Katan in the SDCC 18 trailer gives away the latter's Heel–Face Turn that occurred in Season 5.
    • The Celebration Chicago trailer is also rife with major spoilers from the installment's past, such as Ahsoka leaving the Jedi Order and the deaths of Fives, Echo and Hevy.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Ahsoka telling Anakin in the SDCC 18 trailer that "It's been a while" is twofold. The installment's renewal marks it's return four years since the last season, and also marks the first major Prequel Trilogy era installment (minus any canonical novels and comics) since the Disney acquisition.
  • The Oner: In the SDCC 18 trailer, the camera follows an LAAT flying to Fort Anaxes, then shows Anakin, Rex and Hunter walking outside the base, and finally pans to a humongous Republic fleet above them.
  • Recycled Trailer Music: The SDCC 18 trailer uses the same music from The Force Awakens' second trailer.
  • Serkis Folk: Dave Filoni revealed that Ray Park, Maul's physical actor from the theatrical films, was brought on to do his motion capture.
