Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

Alright, might have been an expected fluke on CM...but this has turned up a couple solid Keepers for here!

What's the work?

Uncharted (2022) is a live-action adaptation of the popular video game series of the same name, following treasure hunter Nathan Drake—played in this film by Tom Holland—as he gets embroiled in a globe-trotting hunt for the legendary, lost hidden treasure of the Magellan expedition from centuries ago. Along the way, Nate runs into treacherous allies and dangerous baddies, but first we talk his mentor-partner-buddy, who isn't quite this trope in the games themselves, but pushes his way well into it, here:

Who is Sully? What makes him a candidate?

Played by Marky Mark himself, Victor "Sully" Sullivan is a suave treasure hunter who opens the film approaching Nate, noticing the young man has pickpocketed a wealthy patron at a bar. After some small talk and attempting to talk Nate into a team up for a mysterious job, Sully seemingly departs in peace when Nate refuses, only for Nate to realize Sully pickpocketed him of the goods he stole from the patrons.

When Nate tracks Sully to his apartment to find the goods, Sully reveals he planned the whole thing expressly to show Nate an authentic map connected to the Magellan expedition. Turns out, Sully was working with Nate's long-lost brother Sam to find the treasure before he mysteriously disappeared, and now Sully wants to draft Nate's help in finding Sam and the Magellan hidden treasure.

....except errr Sully is lying about Sam. Sully was indeed working with Sam: but rival treasure hunter Braddock shot and apparently killed Sam. Sully is just using Sam's name and memory to manipulate Nate into assisting him, knowing from stories Sam shared that Nate is a clever hunter himself.

Working with Nate to infiltrate a high-end auction and steal an immensely valuable cross to help them in their quest, Sully works with Nate and Wild Card Chloe Frazer to travel across the globe and solve various riddles and clues leading to the treasure—in the process dueling the badass Braddock and saving Nate and Chloe more than once—Sully is eventually exposed as having lied to Nate about Sam, Sully truthfully purely out for the money. Nonetheless, Nate and Sully remain partners to see their hunt through, and though the two are separated after Sully carries out a plan to escape Braddock's military forces—a plan that Nate failed to follow through on himself and nearly gets killed for it while Sully just gracefully exits, lol—Sully later tracks down Nate, humorously via his cell phone, just as Nate finds the missing Magellan treasure aboard two ancient ships hidden in a cave.

Unfortunately, Braddock arrives and tries to steal the treasure for herself by airlifting the two ancient ships with helicopters, leading to a sprawling duel between Nate and Sully VS Braddock and her forces aboard two flying ships. God I love it.

Having collected a sack of treasure for himself, Sully manages to climb aboard one of Braddock's helicopters and kill the pilots, ready to flee with the treasure he's always wanted...but when Nate is in danger of an encroaching Braddock, Sully—having no other weapons at his disposal—begrudgingly uses his sack of treasure as a a projectile and flings it at Braddock, saving Nate as the Magellan ships fall apart and the treasure is lost to sea forever.

But as Sully and Nate bond over their shared adventure—and a few pieces of treasure Nate managed to save—they prepare to begin a whole other quest together, their career in treasure hunting having just gotten started.

Is he magnificent?

Definitely, Sully is a slick, clever con man and fortune hunter who concocts the entire hunt for Magellan's treasure via first manipulating, then genuinely befriending, Nate and recognizing that he needs his expertise while still bringing a ton of wits and work to the table that makes him just as valuable to the globe-scouring as Nate. He masterminds the auction rip-off, he keeps pace with Nate throughout the flick, saves the day more than once including the final battle where he sacrifices his long-sought fortune to save Nate's life.

Is he a bastard?

Yeah, very much. He fully plays right along with Nate pickpocketing wealthy clients to keep the goods for himself and lure Nate to a meeting, he emotionally preys on Nate in regards to Sam which is absolutely played up as a scummy thing to do, he steals the golden cross from the auction, and the threat of Sully betraying Nate for greed throughout the flick is heavily leaned into, and indeed still present even for the final battle until Sully makes the choice to save Nate and sacrifice the goods. He's definitely immoral enough.

Final Verdict?

Easy yep, what I believe is the second MB for Wahlberg! note

YES to Sully, big time.

  • Dragon Age
    • The mysterious Flemeth, Witch of the Wilds, is shrouded in mystery. A seemingly dotty old woman who speaks in riddles. In truth a mortal who bonded with the soul of Mythal, Flemeth deals in bargains but is swift to twist them to her own benefit. Saving the Grey Warden of Ferelden, Flemeth assists them and sends her daughter Morrigan with the secret hope that Morrigan will conceive a child using the soul of the Darkspawn Archdemon.Setting up her own survival by manipulating the hero Hawke, Flemeth returns years later to secretly assist Morrigan and potentially take the Archdemon's soul from her grandson before seemingly giving her life to the mysterious Solas for his own purposes.
    • Zevran Arainai is a former member of the Antivan Crows. An assassin whose brilliance is focused on seduction, Zevran deserts the Crows to join the Grey Warden and assists them with flair and intellect the whole way through. Later returning to Antiva, Zevran begins to bring the Crows down, converting some to his cause and infiltrating and destroying other Houses of the Crows, with full intent to see them burn for what they have done.

  • Pacific Rim: Hannibal Chau, the brilliant Black Market dealer, named for his "favorite historical character and second favorite Szechuan restaurant in Brooklyn" is a black market dealer in Kaiju parts who keeps his business well out of the authorities. Instantly recognizing the danger when scientist Newton arrives, having drifted with a Kaiju, Hannibal uses him as a decoy to escape to his own Kaiju bunker and helps him later recover a Kaiju brain. Seemingly devoured by a baby Kaiju, Hannibal survives and cuts his way out of the beast, his only concern being one of his missing shoes.

And now...

What's the work?

Pacific Rim is a movie by Guillermo del Toro, the man himself, where Idris Elba is hellbent on canceling the apocalypse. Evil aliens are sending Kaiju through gateways and humankind are fighting back with giant robots. So, let's discuss the one MB here...I give you:

Hannibal Chau.

Who is Hannibal Chau?

A tall, well dressed man with amazingly glittery shoes and cool shades, introducing himself to scientist Newton Geiszler who is a bit confused to find himself talking to Ron Perlman. "Like the name? It's after my favorite historical character and my second favorite Szechuan restaurant in Brooklyn." Now, Hannibal is a black market Kaiju dealer, selling Kaiju bits for cash and keeping ahead of authorities. He does this well, but instantly recognizes the danger presented by Newton having tapped into a Kaiju brain and that Newt's recklessness has unleashed two Kaiju on the city.

Deciding to use him as a decoy, he sends him to a public bunker while he hits his personal anti-Kaiju one, mentioning he tried the public one. Once. And then reveals a missing eye. The Kaiju is indeed after Newton, but the Jaeger bots stop it and Hannibal emerges to get Newton his Kaiju brain when one baby Kaiju emerges. One look tells Hannibal tha the Kaiju is weak and unformed and he gets it to run with them, letting it drown in the air. Unfortunately, the Kaiju isn't quite dead and devours Hannibal.

Except post credits? He cuts his way out with a switchblade. With these words:

"Where's my goddamn shoe?!"

Any issues?

Pfft, no. Hannibal is a One-Scene Wonder par excellence. Perlman devours the role something fierce. He's charismatic as hell, a pure scene stealer and deals a full black market Kaiju operation. When he thinks they're in danger, he uses Newton as bait to survive. And that last scene? NGL, if it wasn't for that, I wouldn't be proposing him as he is a touch arrogant with the "dead" Kaiju. With the scene and oh my god, holy hell yes.

Oh, he's a black market dealer who interrogates Newton via a switchblade in the nostril and puts a lot of lives at risk by sending Newt to a public lockup, knowing Kaiju are after him. But the aliens are a bunch of genocidal monsters and Hannibal is just trying to survive and thrive.

Conclusion?

Saying yes, and did his writeup above!

Based on the EP, [tup] to Sully.

Speaking of Mark Wahlberg, I may have another for him soon and in addition to that, there's all the 2003 Italian Job ones to tackle eventually too.

First for Director Ruben Fleischer as well, best known for the Zombieland movies; Gangster Squad; 30 Minutes or Less and a little movie called…Venom (2018).

Who asked for a Skyrim EP? No one? Well lets go then!

What is the Work?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a game I'm sure most of you have played or at least heard of but the character I want to propose is from the first expansion-Dawnguard. Dawnguard follows the Dragonborn heading to said faction, a group of vampire hunters, and following a lead that some vampires are lurking around a crypt looking for something. When the Dragonborn investigates the crypt, they find a vampire called Serana sealed in a coffin who also has an Elder Scroll with her. You return her to her father, Lord Harkon (who's not exactly father of the year. From there you either decide to become a vampire or stay with the Dawnguard. Either way the story will follow in the same direction. In the story you then have to find Serana's mother Valerica, who is my candidate.

Who is Valerica?

Valerica is Serana's mother and the estranged wife of Lord Harkon and a follower of Molag Bal (the local CM deity) who along with willingly submitted herself along with Serana to Bal to become pure-blood vampires in what's described as a humiliating ceremony (the first vampire was made when Molag Bal raped a woman so yeah you can put two and two together.) Becoming a vampire she and Harkon then became leaders of an ancient clan of them.

Unfortunately Harkon became obsessed with a prophecy which would blot out the sun, allowing vampires to roam freely. Unfortunately the prophecy required the blood of a female pure blood vampire, like Serana. Already falling out with Harkon, Valerica sealed Serana in a crypt along with an Elder Scroll before disappearing herself with another scroll to get away from Harkon. To get away from her husband, Valerica escaped to another dimension called the Soul Carin where she was content to continue her studies with necromancy and alchemy.

Valerica tries to bargain with the domain holders of the realm, The Ideal Masters, for refuge for more souls. Unfortunately The Ideal Masters would rather have Valerica's soul and enacted the Keepers (humanoid spirits in dragonbone armour) to harvest her soul. Valerica fought them off and took refuge in a fortress where they sealed her and reached a stalemate where they both played the waiting game.

The player and Serana eventually meet Valerica in the Carin where her and Serana have a heart to heart where Serana calls her out for using her as a way to oppose Harkon without letting Serana have a choice in the matter which does hit Valerica emotionally. Valerica then tells you to destroy the 3 keepers to break the keep's seal so she can give you her scroll. After you get into the keep you, Serana and Valerica then have a fight with the dragon Durnehviir who investigated the keep. After the battle Valerica will give you her scroll and asks you to stop Harkon and the prophecy and keep Serana safe. She doesn't join you though, not out of cowardice but due to her also being viable for the prophecy which would double the chances of Harkon fulfilling the prophecy.

After Harkon's demise, you can return to Valerica to inform her about it in which she'll show genuine gratitude and return back the castle and continue with her studies now that she can enter the portal freely.

Is she magnificent?

Well she managed to create a portal to another realm (which in game is only seen with Alduin's portal to Sovngarde), shown to be a competent fighter, held a stalemate against against the deities of Soul Carin with no signs of caving in, managed to seal Serana well enough from Harkon that it took centuries with him having a small army under his control, has shown to be a competent alchemist.

Is she a bitch?

Well she's a vampire so that's already a thing, she has an interest with experimental necromancy and souls, she sealed Serana away in a crypt expecting her to consent with it (although Serana's shown to be asleep in the coffin so she didn't leave her in an And I Must Scream scenario), her opposing the prophecy isn't out of altruism but because she's aware that everyone would rile against vampires to see them wiped out. This dialogue exchange explains it:

Dragonborn:"Why haven't you pursued the prophecy?"

Valerica:"Harkon's vision is a world plunged in eternal darkness where the vampire can flourish and never again fear the "tyranny of the sun." What he fails to realize is how much attention would be called to our kind if the prophecy came to fruition."

Dragonborn:"What sort of attention?"

Valerica:"If eternal night fell, there are many who wouldn't stand for it. They would raise armies in attempts to return things to normal. The order of the day would be our destruction until every last vampire was hunted down and eliminated."

Dragonborn:"So you prefer living in the shadows."

Valerica:"I do. It's how the vampire has survived for millennia, and the only way we can continue to survive in the future."

So Pragmatic Villainy.

There's also having Serana offered to Molag Bal to become a vampire which I think would be a major problem...except Valerica also goes through with it and it's shown that she does truly care about Serana, its just her hatred against Harkon that misguided her and made her see Serana as a means to an end.

Final Verdict?

Leaning [tup]

Out of my two Skyrim candidates, this is the one I have more faith in but I'll explain my issues with the other one when I get his EP up.

EDIT: Oh and [tup] Hannibal

Not sure on this one, but why not?

What is the work?

Law & Order is a 1990 classic Crime Drama show that ran until 2010 for 20 seasons and just recently returned with its 21st after nearly 12 years. Its focus is very simple: one half of the show is devoted mostly to detectives investigating a crime of some kind (more often than not, murder) and the second half involves the DA appointed ADAs handling the suspect’s trial. One of my all-time favorite shows and the candidate comes from Season 17's "Deadlock", which over on CM gave us a pretty nasty son of a bitch who's NOT the one we're discussing obviously.

Who is she and what has she done?

Dena Carter is a former prosecutor turned defense attorney now running for New York State Senate on the campaign of bringing back the death penalty. Shortly after notorious mass murderer Leon Vorgitch is recaptured after murdering eight more people including four kids (previously convicted for five other murders years earlier before briefly escaping), Carter has herself retained as counsel to Robert Purcell, whose young daughter Megan was one of the victims. Wanting the press and to make a point about just how much everyone wanted to see Vorgitch die, Carter, knowing Purcell wanted to kill Vorgitch, informs him of a time change to when Vorgitch is being moved at one point and he then tracks down and publically shoots Vorgitch three times, killing him.

Carter rejects Executive ADA Jack McCoy's offer to plead him down to Manslaughter under the belief that the jury is not gonna want to convict due to the devastating loss he suffered and also convinces the judge to not allow for the charge to be allowed to the jury either (it may come off a bit as hubris and is because it'll look better to acquit him rather than bring him down to a lesser sentence, but also feels like she wants to keep the push on showing why the execution is not a bad thing and why her own platform works). During the trial, ADA Connie Rubirosa discovers that Carter had likely learned when Vorgitch was being moved that day and McCoy confronts Carter about risking Purcell's incarceration by likely allowing him to kill Vorgitch and then pushing Purcell to go to trial—and she reiterates her points about why the death penalty is important, that the State is to blame for not executing Vorgitch and that Purcell will get off (she was trying to sell an insanity defense as per Purcell being mentally disoriented and thinking about wanting Justice done when he did it).

Purcell ends up convicted though (with Carter disappointedly shaking McCoy's hand before leaving) and McCoy goes to Purcell after and shows him headlines of Carter parading him while asking him about whether or not Carter told him when Vorgitch was being moved. McCoy gets Purcell's sentence reduced down to manslaughter for 3-10 and reveals to DA Arthur Branch a newspaper page of Carter holding her hand up on one side of her face as she's being "INDICTED" for her part in it. Branch happily closes the episode with: "Now that's Justice."

Is she magnificent?

She's smart, she knows how to play up the sympathy for Purcell and the circumstances of the law to the advantage of her case and tries really hard to push for her client to get off for what he's done. While Carter ultimately doesn't succeed, she still had a pretty solid case and knowing the public condemned the inability for Vorgitch to be legally executed would be a contributing factor in making it hard for Purcell to be judged harshly for what he'd done. While she didn't expect to lose, Carter also gave it her all regardless because while her own interests came first, Purcell clearly would've benefitted from the acquittal too (the scandals she's been facing politically are not given any real details either bound just a brief mention).

Bitch? Too much?

No VB and yeah, her defeat is a little humiliating, but she still is shown to be keeping calm despite that. It could simply be that Carter comes off as a saint when compared to Vorgitch and that it feels really scummy to be exploiting Purcell's grief over what happened to his daughter, but she still takes his case, helped him take revenge on the evil man who killed his daughter and then tried to get him off for it. Carter isn't just wanting to get the political clout either, but clearly believes in wanting to guarantee the death penalty is there so others like Vorgitch don't get to live after the horrible things they do either (she calls him "Rob" and it's possible there's a little compassion there as she does so, especially when patting him on the back after conviction too).

Verdict?

Uhh…[tup]? Up to you.

Preemptive writeup:

  • Original series: "Deadlock": Dena Carter is a former prosecutor turned defense attorney seeking a seat on the State Senate. Running on the platform of bringing back the death penalty, she seeks publicity for it first by getting herself hired as counsel to Robert Purcell, the father of a little girl murdered by the sadistic Leon Vorgitch and knowing Purcell wants to get revenge, Carter gives him the time change of when Vorgitch is being moved, resulting in Purcell tracking him down and killing him. Representing Purcell at trial and keeping him from pleading down or lesser charges being offered, Carter pushes the idea of not only how terrible Vorgitch was and how not only everyone wanted to see him executed—which the statute wouldn't allow for—but that Purcell suffered temporary insanity in the moment he did it too. Despite showboating her client for the press and her ambition, Carter still genuinely makes the solid effort needed to try to get her client off for the crime he committed no less.

What time is it? It's Effortpost Time!!!

The Work

Adventure Time is an animated show that aired on Cartoon Network from 2010 to 2018 for 9 seasons. Surprisingly, it only has one MB right now, who was only approved months ago. I'd like to add to the number by proposing the Flying Lettuce Brothers from the Season 5 episode One Last Job

The Candidate

The episode starts off with Jake receiving a message that his daughter has been kidnapped. The man in the tape tells Jake that they know about his criminal past, and tell him that if he wants his daughter to be safe, he has to get his gang back together to steal the The Baker's Shard, aka the purest form of sugar.

Jake presses a button to alert all of the members of his old gang - Tiffany, Gareth, and of course, the Flying Lettuce Brothers - and tells them what the situation is. They agree to help Jake after he says that his daughter has been kidnapped and he has to save her.

Gareth and the Lettuce brothers enter the Candy Kingdom, disguised as milkmen and knock out the Captain of the Banana Guard. Mimicking the captain's voice, the brothers summon the Banana Guards to go outside and shout as loud as they can, while Tiffany and Jake blow up the door to the vault containing the Baker's shard.

Jake reaches the Baker's Shard, but then, he hears the voice of his daughter's kidnapper telling him to throw the Baker's Shard to him to get his daughter back. However, it turns out that the voice was coming from the Brothers. Tiffany sets off the alarm and the gang flees in the van, leaving Jake to get caught.

Angered, Jake grows extremely large and pursues them. After finally catching them, Jake finds out that the van was driven by Jake Jr. herself (who orchestrated the whole thing), causing him to let go of the van and letting his teammates get away.

Magnificence

Their whole shtick is voice imitation, which they are able to use to great effect. When they are introduced, we see them rob a Squeeze-E Mart by impersonating the clerk's boss and telling her to "take all the money from the register and give it to the two guys out back by the dumpster"

They use it again to get the Banana Guard out of the way while Tiffany and Jake blow up the vault door, and no one suspects a thing. They also use it to trick Jake into giving them the Shard.

They get caught by Jake and are only let go because Jake is shocked by the fact that his daughter orchestrated her own kidnapping, but then again, Jake is a shape-shifter who, at that moment, was about many times larger than the milk van they were in.

Bastardry

They are introduced robbing a shop, and while they initially join the heist to help Jake get his daughter back, they also betray him and leave him to face the Banana Guard himself.

The Competition

Of their teammates, Tiffany feels too bratty to be magnificent, and Gareth doesn't do much. Not too sure about Jake and Jake Jr, as I haven't seen all of their episodes. Also, this episode is their only appearance. And while they aren't the brains behind the heist, they do enough to stand out on their own terms

Based on the EP, [tup] to the Flying Lettuce Brothers.

I added Carter's preemptive writeup to the post with the EP by the way. I worked about lack of charm or false charm certainly—made it a point of rewatching all her scenes in order to get the best understanding while I was writing the EP certainly—but again, I think her wanting and trying to get Purcell off does make a difference. It's still very representative of what her platform she's running on is and shows that's genuine—as she also makes that point to McCoy at her campaign headquarters too.

Future you have only 3 upvotes and after reading that EP, I'm gonna be a [tdown]. Hubris, doesn't win and is indicted. No.

Still reading the other EPs.

Edit: [tup]Valerica.

For adventure time, I remember that episode, they underestimated how powerful Jake is, and as you say are only let go because Jake is shocked that his daughter Jake Jr. is the mastermind. It was her plan, I feel like she has a much better shot than they do. I think I'm a [tdown] Lettuce Brothers.

You can only write so much in your forum signature. It's not fair that I want to write a piece of writing yet it will cut me off in the mid

[up]That's totally fair. Keeping my yes for now though.

I might vote on Valerica later.

Yeah, I'll switch to a [tdown] on the Brothers based on what j said.

[up][up] According to the Adventure Time wiki, Jake Jr appears in 9 episodes, of which she has a major role in 3 - Jake The Dad (her debut), this one, and Another Five More Short Graybles. This episode is the only one where we see her do any scheming, though I'm not sure if it makes a difference.
