All-Purpose Policy and Meta discussion: Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop

Go To

This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.

Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:

  • If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
  • If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
    • You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
    • Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
  • If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
  • Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

For a more detailed introduction to this forum, click here.

For related projects, see Wick Cleaning Projects and the Wick Check Project.

See Tropes Needing TRS for a list of trope candidates for TRS.

A (not mandatory, informal) queue for prospective TRS participants can be found at the TRS Queue.

Alright, I ran through Administrivia.Pages Needing Wicks and updated all figures based on "would this be <24 wicks if I ignored Needs Wicks/Examples," Lots of starving pages on there, including a bunch of snowclones.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but it's the best option I could think of.

After adding a trope to a character page the other night, I looked at the source trope's page... and only then found that the trope in question, Informed Attribute, is actually a supertrope with no on-page examples and a listing of sub-tropes. Yet it's still listed as a regular trope and has wicks on 4311 pages.

Should we add it to the TRS queue (with the ultimate solution being to convert into a disambiguation or index, to avoid people adding further examples) and then start a clean up of all these wicks, transferring them to the appropriate sub-tropes? Or should it just go straight to a regular "Clean-Up" thread under long-term/ongoing projects?

Until next time...

Anon e Mouse Jr.

A trope can be no on-page examples and still be fine to use as a regular trope. I don't think there's a major problem.

Worth noting that Informed Attribute isn't on the NOPE or any other Administrivia index. Also worth noting that Informed Attribute was a redirect to Informed Ability for some time before being re-split as a result of this TRS discussion.

Fewest wicks remaining: Authority Grants Asskicking (302), Hollywood Dateless (265), What The Hell Casting Agency (182), Acceptable Target (93), Electra Complex (19)

Closable upon completion: Teens Are Short (828), Oedipus Complex (748), But Not Too Black (689), Sweater Girl (406), Hollywood Dateless (265)

Thoughts: inb4 Furry Webcomics not being on this list, I'm not super sure what's going on with that project so I didn't toss it onto the wick cleaning page. I'll leave it to someone who has a better grasp of that one. Is low wicks, though. Of the stagnant cleanups, Villain Has a Point (deemed IUEO) has been gaining the most wicks per update.

I just did Robot Clown Wick Check based on concerns that Robot Clown was just "robot + clown", and I'm not sure what to do here. There's enough "robot + clown" use that something needs to be done, but none of the wicks checked overlapped with Funny Robot, meaning a suggested merge with that wouldn't work, and if we disambiguate, I'm not sure to what.

Should we just cut? Is another option potentially valid?

Well what to do is up for its thread, but it doesn't sound tropeworthy.

Redirecting to Funny Robot could be an option if there aren't any other target pages for a disambiguation page. Either way, I agree that this seems like another case of a "trope" featuring arbitrary combinations of traits.

Came across Nuns N Rosaries, and I think it's trying to be about "stock Roman Catholic character featured in work", but there's so few on-page examples, and the usage is all over the place. The page is created in 2008, so it predates the TLP, but does anyone any idea what this page is supposed to be about?

[up]it reads like just a list of common depictions of catholics / catholicism in media. it has 60 wicks so maybe doing a wick check might reveal a tropeworthy pattern, but yeah that page is a yikes

Did a wick check for Five-Finger Fillet after noticing most of the examples on the page were ZCEs, and annoyingly that's how it is for the rest of the wiki as well. I'll drop it in the queue but it can be launched without me because I don't really know what to do with it.

[up] The concept seems tropeworthy, but with a ZCE count that high, I'm tempted to just say cut and yard it.

Off-Model is down to its last two namespaces that need to be cleaned (one of which is almost done) and then its thread can be closed.

prettycoolguy mentioned in the Doing It for the Art thread that the Characters/ namespace is the only one left for that cleanup, so there’s that too.

Finished my Sandbox.Nice To The Wick Check for Nice to the Waiter and... yeah it's what I expected, far more of the wicks focus on the nice aspect over the mean aspect to the point where several examples use it less as a morality metric and more to contrast the nice character with their awful, classist societies. Many others simply talk about the character being nice to people without explaining what those actions represent.

I don't really know what a good solution is, though.

Fewest wicks remaining: Authority Grants Asskicking (301), What The Hell Casting Agency (180), Acceptable Target (93), Electra Complex (19), Senpai/Kōhai (15)

Closable upon completion: Teens Are Short (800), Oedipus Complex (747), But Not Too Black (679), Sweater Girl (399), Senpai/Kōhai (15)

Thoughts: As discussed upthread, there are a handful of projects on the cusp of completion, both through full dewicking (seeable here) and just general cleanup. This is good, since the queue's staring down the three-digit mark.

Looking at Dead Fic, in 2022, Racattack Force made some changes to the intro.

Prior to that it had a note comparing the trope to Orphaned Series - now it states that they're mutually exclusive and specifies which examples are which. There's no edit reason and I can't find any discussion, so it looks like it was unilateral - am I missing anything?

[up][up]I undid it because unilateral definition changes are against the rules, and TRS isn't needed to undo them, unless they're particularly old and contributed to Trope Decay. This one was from last year, so there was no reason to leave it up.

Edit: Notified the "Is this an example?" thread.

A question on Comic Book Run, following on from the "Trope Misuse in General" post here -

If we wanted to set a minimum duration for the creator's 'run' on the series (e.g. 1 year or 12 issues), to help prevent trope drift, would that need to go via TRS or would it be something we could handle via the NREP crowners, as with some other time-gap / duration tropes (e.g. Role Reprise etc)?

(As the trope intro already puts restrictions on the series and type of work, I assume we can just handle that aspect without further TRS discussion, but let me know if I'm wrong)

Thanks!

Past In The Rear View Mirror - Created in 2010, only 21 wicks, majority of on-page examples are ZCEs. Should I bring it to the crosswicking thread or throw it onto the queue for starvation?
