Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Would How I Met Your Mother be considered Never Trust a Title? The story of how Ted met his wife doesn't happened until the end of the series. The show Its largely more about Ted love life in general. And in the end, the story wasn't about how Ted met his wife but how great Robin is to his children so he can asked her out.

I would say no. It still ultimately tells the story of their mother in the final season. The showrunners just didn't expect the show to go so long.

Trivia.High Guardian Spice:

  • Word of Gay: Snapdragon’s voice actor has stated she is a transgender woman. That would also make her a lesbian due to her obvious attraction to Sage.

Okay, I haven't seen the series, but isn't there a plot in the show itself where Snapdragon realizes she's trans, thus making her VA saying so moot?

Can't confirm having not seen it either, but if that appears in the actual work, then yes, a VA saying it is not Word of Gay so much as "repeating things the work already established".

e: Though if the VA said it before it happened in the show, that'd still be an example.

[up][up][up][up][up][up] Yeah point taken, its not explicitly stated there either.

But changing gears here, I saw three potential examples of Apocalypse How in the show. The first was the eruption of the volcano which caused the destruction of Pompeii, the second was the aforementioned Alabama hurricane, and the third was the destruction of Lamentis caused by its collision with its moon. If they are indeed examples, which classes would they be?

I have a question regarding this Author's Saving Throw in Shin Megami Tensei V:

Shin Megami Tensei IV was criticised for its Neutral routes being so happy they invalidated all other options. Neutral in this game is far from sunshine and rainbows, with Nuwa being one of its most violent reps and Yakumo having brutal Fantastic Racism towards Demons. And while there is a Golden Ending that is Neutral-aligned, it isn't perfect, as by creating a world for humanity alone, there's no place for the Nahobino, who is now a full god.

While there definitely are some people who disliked the Neutral route of the fourth game, I'm not sure there was enough of a fuss that the developers took that into account for the fifth game. From what I can tell, there is no evidence that Japanese fans threw up a fuss about the endings, so the entry reads a bit like speculation on why the devs decided to do something different.

The developers themselves don't seem to have commented on any supposed backlash towards the Neutral ending in the fourth game, for what it's worth.

[up] Sounds like a misuse, there's not much correlation between the development of both's endings. Also IV does have Story Branch Favoritism, but the Neutral route is quite far from "so happy".

Reposting because I think it got lost in the page transition. After cutting Anders' example from The Extremist Was Right, it was added to his character page. The first bullet point text is exactly the same as TEWR, and the second point is diving deep into begging the question and slippery slope territory, but I wanted to bring the full example here again just in case.

  • The Extremist Was Right:
    • Terrible as Anders' actions were, a lot of supplementary material suggests that escalating the mage/Templar conflict to open war was the right thing to do, since the status quo only weakened the mages' position. The events of Inquisition can further cement this idea; if Leliana is named Divine, one of her reforms to the Chantry is the dissolving of the Circle system, granting the mages their freedom and creating widespread mage acceptance, giving Anders (and the rebel mages who agreed with his points, if not his actions) everything he wanted. Even the endings that see the Circles rebuilt come with some major reformations.
    • The flavor text of the Magehunter shield in Inquisition tells of a previous misuse of the Right of Annulment. In 3:09 Towers, twenty-five years after the Right was first granted, the Circle of Magi in Antiva City was annulled to cover up the fact that its Knight-Captain was a serial killer who murdered over a hundred mages out of pure bigotry. While the Seekers eventually hunted him down and punished him, they assisted the Templars in covering up the incident, leaving the rest of the Circles completely ignorant of the truth, and there is no mention of them punishing the Knight-Commander for Annulling a Circle under false pretenses. Given that background chatter in the second game reveals that Meredith had gone over Elthina's head and petitioned the Divine for the Right, it paints a very clear picture of what might have happened to the Gallows if Anders had not provoked Meredith into jumping the gun instead of waiting for the Divine's permission.

Is it me or would this example from Transformers: Energon seem like it would fit better under Pop-Culture Urban Legends:

  • Common Knowledge: It's a popular rumor that Starscream in the original Japanese version is a clone (probably stemming from how he is renamed to "Nightscream" only in Japan) and that the dub changed him to the same character as his Armada self. In actuality, even the original dialogue refers to "Nightscream" as one of Megatron's past soldiers and Alpha Q just gives him a new name, meaning he's a revived Starscream there too.

And from the same page can one work qualify as a Dork Age?:

  • Dork Age: Beyond simply being regarded as an inferior sequel to Armada (by both the show's fans and detractors), it's regarded as the worst TF show period, due to wasted potential, terrible CGI, and very poor dubbing.

[up][up]Honestly, I think there's a seed of a valid example buried in there, in that Inquisition does pretty clearly show that Anders's broader goal of dragging these festering problems out in the open led to necessary reforms that probably weren't going to happen otherwise. What it doesn't validate is the method he did that by. (Just speaking personally, one of the few points I found myself majorly agreeing with Vivienne - who I rather disliked on the whole - on was that tying the cause of mage independence to a terrorist attack that killed hundreds of people was a huge PR self-own.)

BTW, the definition of The Extremist Was Right is distinctly not helpful here. I don't see anything about other characters in a story needing to say as much to qualify an example the way you originally cited, but the description's not all that long in general.

Re: Word of Gay on High Guardian Spice, considering Snapdragon was only shown as male during the thirteen episode run (which, sadly, seems like that's all it's going to get. I really wanted to see where they were going with it), and the furthest he went towards transitioning was talk to a confirmed transgender teacher about transitioning, albeit without any definite resolution one way or the other, and painting his nails, I don't think it counts

I saw four potential examples of Apocalypse How in Loki. The first was the eruption of the volcano which caused the destruction of Pompeii, the second was the aforementioned Alabama hurricane, the third was the destruction of Lamentis caused by its collision with its moon, and the last is the release of multiple Variants of Kang, who will restart the multiversal war and ultimately destroy the entire omniverse. If they are indeed examples, which classes would they be?

[up][up][up] I was going off of Laconic and the first sentence of the description, although I agree it could be written clearer. The heavy disagreement on his methods is what puts him out of TEWR territory for me. Although, now that I'm looking at it, would it be a better fit for Well-Intentioned Extremist? Anders seems to fit under the first and/or third types (the problem is the means and/or consequences) just based on in-universe reactions to his "solution".

Does it count as Body Horror when a real life person having a skin condition that happens off-screen? Because I found one in The Masked Singer charater about a contestant from season 6 named Puffish. Here's the example:

  • Body Horror: After being unmasked, Toni's wearing a cloth mask over her face. This is to hide the rash she obtained from the disease known as lupus.

Since I've brought this thread up, is Demonization only about in-universe characters being villainized (like all the examples and Playing With page suggest) or it allows the narrative to portray a specific faction as having no sympathetic qualities when they could have off-screen?

[up] Are trope's definition and scope too ambiguous? I can push it into TRS to give it more subtropes (with examples like that it may end up as an index). As for the ATT, I don't think there's a way to resolve it if sides can agree on what the trope is about.

As someone involved in that debate, I do think that it's too ambiguous right now. The other party is insistent it's anti-Russian propaganda showing them all as mass-murdering imperialists, but as generic and merikan COD is, it's not Demonization. The current description implies it needs to be some WW1 or WW2-style 'Adolf Hitler gets punched' propaganda to qualify, and the complaints added straddle YMMV too much. I say this as someone who rolls my eyes at the "Russia is the bad guy" plot infesting military shooters.
