Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Medium Awareness refers to when the characters take adventages of the medium. How do they take advantage of it in the examples I mentioned?

Tropes Needing TRS has Breaking the Fourth Wall listed because this broader use is more appropriate to how the term is used offsite than the more specific definition listed on our page.

Can Hobbes Was Right be used to describe a character's personal philosophy or is it strictly a trope that describes a setting?

The question can also apply to Rousseau Was Right, I guess.

I previously asked about an Art Evolution entry for Shin Megami Tensei V, and got the feedback that it wasn't a valid entry. However, someone else recently added this:

  • Art Evolution: Downplayed since while Jack Frost's base design is relatively the same, he now also has white linings on the edges of its hat and collar.

This still isn't a valid entry, right? It's a different artist doing his own take on the original artist's design; it's not the original artist changing his style over the years.

Ever notice how many "one-sided rivalry" shoehorns Fandom Rivalry tends to attract? For example, in Big Mouth:

As an additional question to my previous query about Art Evolution, can Art Evolution even be downplayed? It always felt to me that either the artist's style has changed, or it hasn't.

Then again, that might not be relevant to that query, since the art in question was done by someone who wasn't the original artist.

From Fridge.Pinocchio.

  • And the Coachman is a Karma Houdini. For all we know, he could still be turning kids into donkeys and selling them off to the circus, salt mines, etc. Hell, he's a pedophile too, stripping little donkey kids' clothes off. And he's still out there.

The bolded part comes across as overanalyzing to me. I'm pretty sure the reason he's stripping the donkeys' clothes off is because he's selling them, and you can't sell an animal wearing clothes or it'll expose them as transformed children. There's nothing sexual whatsoever about the scene.

I've seen a lot of Applicability about that whole scene being analogous to pedophilia, but in context, it could be rewritten to be clear that it's subtext at best, not text. (Which still works for Fridge — it's creepier when you think of how all of it fits together.)

I found this on I Didn't Do It:

  • Relationship Writing Fumble: Who do the writers want Garret with? There's plenty of scenes that give hints that he'll end up with Lindy such as their subplot in "Bad News", but then there's also hints that Garret and Delia will end up together, such as their subplot in "The Not-So-Secret Lives of Mosquitos and Muskrats" or "Stevie Likes Lindy". To make matters more confusing, they introduced another character, Hayley, in the episode "Lindy In The Middle", who thought Garret was cute.

Is this an example of a writing fumble? I am unfamiliar with this show, but I don't think this is what the trope is about. It's about platonic relationships being seen as romantic by a wide audience. This Just sounds like he was given Ship Tease with a bunch of people and didn't get with any of them.

Trivia.Pibby:

Role Reprise has to have the VA not voice the character in a while - Jeff Bergman has voiced the character since the 2000s, and outside of this last voiced Fred in that new Space Jam movie from earlier this year. However, Pibby is essentially a short pitch-pilot - is the fact they got Fred's actual VA for a few-second appearance noteworthy?

I wonder if "getting the original actor back for a minuscule bit part" might be a tropable concept (or at least Trivia) in its own right, actually.

Mmm, maybe - I didn't look through the subpages, but there is this on the main page in the kiddie rides folder:

  • The original Budgie the Little Helicopter kiddie ride by R.G. Mitchell has Richard Pearce reprising his role of the titular character for the ride start and stop messages.

There's also the entire pinball folder, but I have no idea how prominent most of those voices clips are.

Given that the Laconic was updated to clarify the point of the trope in response to my query, and that there have been no further responses, I've gone ahead and removed the entry referenced in this post. I've added a commented-out note in the work's page in the hope of staving off further attempts to add the entry back. I've also added a note on the discussion page of the trope itself, with the same information. I've also sent a PM to the troper who keeps adding it back to the page, advising them of this.

I hope that's okay.

The second episode of Loki has the titular character and Agent Mobius sorting through several files of future natural disasters of the late 2040s/early 2050s (as well as the extinction of the Swallow) and they travel to the site of a Class 8 Hurricane that hits a corporate town in Alabama (and presumably a big portion of the East Coast as well). Given theories of human activity worsening nautral disasters (which I don't believe, but the producers might), is this a severly downplayed example of a Green Aesop?

I think it's pretty subtle - mentioning them taking place in the near future and this being 2021 implies that we, being in a world whose fate is not predetermined by any Celestial Bureaucracy monsters, can make the enviromental changes and process improvments we need to to prevent the already bad disasters from becoming worse (case in point, a Category 8 Hurricane striking the Gulf Coast of Alabama in 2050). Preventing the oceans from warming would apparently help do that.

...Yeah, but does the work say that? Sometimes an author just puts in a natural disaster for plot purposes, not as an attempt to say anything about humanity. Green Aesop requires the environmentalist message to be the point of the work in some way.

I'm back again. After cutting Anders' example from The Extremist Was Right, it was added to his character page. The first bullet point text is exactly the same as TEWR, and the second point is diving deep into begging the question and slippery slope territory, but I wanted to bring the full example here again just in case.

  • The Extremist Was Right:
    • Terrible as Anders' actions were, a lot of supplementary material suggests that escalating the mage/Templar conflict to open war was the right thing to do, since the status quo only weakened the mages' position. The events of Inquisition can further cement this idea; if Leliana is named Divine, one of her reforms to the Chantry is the dissolving of the Circle system, granting the mages their freedom and creating widespread mage acceptance, giving Anders (and the rebel mages who agreed with his points, if not his actions) everything he wanted. Even the endings that see the Circles rebuilt come with some major reformations.
    • The flavor text of the Magehunter shield in Inquisition tells of a previous misuse of the Right of Annulment. In 3:09 Towers, twenty-five years after the Right was first granted, the Circle of Magi in Antiva City was annulled to cover up the fact that its Knight-Captain was a serial killer who murdered over a hundred mages out of pure bigotry. While the Seekers eventually hunted him down and punished him, they assisted the Templars in covering up the incident, leaving the rest of the Circles completely ignorant of the truth, and there is no mention of them punishing the Knight-Commander for Annulling a Circle under false pretenses. Given that background chatter in the second game reveals that Meredith had gone over Elthina's head and petitioned the Divine for the Right, it paints a very clear picture of what might have happened to the Gallows if Anders had not provoked Meredith into jumping the gun instead of waiting for the Divine's permission.

Link to my previous post on TEWR for reasoning and discussion.
