Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

For best results, please include why you think an example is iffy in your first post.

Also, many oft-misused tropes/topics have their own threads, such as Surprisingly Realistic Outcome (here) and Fan-Preferred Couple (here). Tropers are better able to give feedback on examples you bring up to specific threads.

From Hilda:

  • For Want Of A Nail: Learning that rooms don't just clean themselves make Frida question her entire life, as she realizes not having to take time to clean her room every day left her plenty of time to study and pursue extracurricular activities. She wonders who and what she would be like if she'd had to spend so much time learning to clean her room every day like everyone else has to.

This doesn't sound like the trope. Is it something else?

[up] Hard to say without more context. Maybe Imagine Spot, if it shows an imaginary scenario about it?

Can Keep Away be done with just one person? Like instead of two people tossing something back and forth to keep it away from a third person, one person holds something out of reach of another? e.g.
  • using their height against a shorter person
  • running away or climbing a tree and dangling it just out of reach
  • tossing it from hand to hand

From Trivia.The Cars:

  • Author Existence Failure: Benjamin Orr's death in 2000 and Ric Ocasek's death in 2019 will likely mean the end for any more Cars reunions.

Does this example count as potential misuse of this trope?

Removed this from the Literature examples of Younger Than They Look for not being literature, and looking at its lack of source I'm not sure it's valid at all. Should I put it in a jokes folder, or leave it cut entirely?

  • A masterpiece of a Take That! against a walking Real Life example, source unknown (best bet: Heinz Rudolf Kunze), google-translated from German on the fly: "A few minutes later he straightened with agonizing effort again and lurched to the sink in the corner. He stared at a hideous goblin with spotty face and strands of hair stuck in dried vomit; his emaciated bones stood out of the skin hanging down in flabby flaps; his stomach was bloated, his legs were crooked and arthritic, the face of one beaten poor devil at the end of a long and lonely ride...Waitaminnit! He looked at a poster of Iggy Pop."

Yes, but it could be reworded. "google-translated on the fly" and the unknown source are not appropiate for an example.

Would introducing it as "a German joke" and putting it in a Jokes folder work?

It would be a better alternative.

Found another problematic example in Replacement Scrappy:

  • A lot of Drakengard fans regard Nowe, the hero of the first sequel, as a Replacement Scrappy for Caim... and even most of Nowe's fans admit he just can't compare as a character.

The trope is for characters disliked for not being a previous counterpart character in the first place. There has been three further games in the series since those two games, and none of them featured Caim, nor did their main characters have a hatedom for not being Caim, making this entry pretty suspect.

This keeps getting argued about periodically, so I'm hoping for a definitive answer from the thread:

The show is RWBY, the character is Qrow Branwen and the trope is Recovered Addict.

  • Recovered Addict: After spending Volume 6 as The Load due to his alcoholism getting out of control, Qrow has given up drinking. When offered wine at Jacques Schnee's banquet, he politely turns it down and leaves to patrol the grounds to ensure he won't be tempted.

He's The Alcoholic, but has spent most of the show as a Functional Addict. This changed in Volume 6 where an Awful Truth got revealed and knocked him for six. He became Addled Addict and The Load, spending most of the time so drunk that the teenage heroes had to take control of the mission they were on.

In an early episode of Volume 7, he tells another character he has quit drinking. In a later episode, the protagonists are taken to an elite social gathering where waiters offer him a glass of alcohol. He becomes very uncomfortable, and decides to get out of the house to go patrolling the grounds so that he can escape the temptation of alcohol.

People have been trying to add Recovered Addict ever since his comment that he's given up drinking. It started again after the episode where he left the premises rather than take a drink. So far, we have only two references in the entire volume to this, and his primary trigger for heavy drinking (emotional stress) has yet to actually crop up in the volume so far.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

  • Never Say "Die": Invoked with when Ash and Verity find Charmander, where the latter says something to the effect of "If the flame on its tail goes out, then..." PAINFULLY averted with Sorrel's Luxray, who dies protecting his trainer from the cold weather, and Ash's death from being blasted by the corrupted Pokémon - whilst any words in relation to death aren't used, they make no attempt at trying to soften it up.

Is that actually an aversion?

It is not, painful or otherwise. The unspoilered section isn't "invoked" either, it's just a normal example.

Found this on YMMV.Indivisible:

  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Anja is presented as a stubborn girl who refuses to listen to reason and does everything her own way which often results in even more destruction and misery. She also treats Dhar, who becomes genuinely apologetic and regretful of his actions as Ravannavar's henchman, lower than dirt and specifically does certain things to spite him, no matter how foolish they are. Even after Dhar performs a Heroic Sacrifice to quell her Unstoppable Rage, Ajna refuses to forgive him for killing her father, even if he was indoctrinated by Ravannavar. While understandable, this also makes Ajna look incredibly petty.

I can't help but wonder how this is "unintentional" when pretty much the entire story is about Ajna's behavior causing a ton of problems.

And Dhar coming to regret killing Ajna's father doesn't change the fact that her father is still dead. That's not the kind of thing you just get over after a day or two, and it's ludicrous to call that "pettiness".

Being pink is different from wearing pink. Also, I have no idea what any of those words have to do with being a "real man". So I'm thinking no.
