Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Does a female orange tabby count under Animal Gender-Bender? Only 20% of red tabbies are female. This isn't as rare as a male calico though, so I don't know if it counts.

Bumping an inquiry I asked two times before but didn't exactly get an answer if the entries are actually okay.

Really think the entries that were removed by Troper pikachu17 actually do count as All Gays are Promiscuous based on what I understand from several entries on the trope's page, its laconic, and its playing with page.

For safety reasons however, I'm asking here again if these entries actually do count before doing anything.

[up][up] I would say no.

Simplified explanation: Matching X chromosomes = all orange (or white), all dark (or white) Mismatched X chromosomes = calicos or tortoiseshells White fur is from a different set of non-sex-related genes

Because of this, only intersex males (specifically Kleinfelter syndrome) can have both orange and dark coloration. Meanwhile pure orange (and white), and pure dark (and white) cats can be male or female easily. It's just that, due to the typically codominant nature of the colors, a lot of females are tortoiseshells or calicos instead.

FranchiseOriginalSin.Pokemon:

  • While less obvious that the above, Iris' fear of Ice typesnote  was considered dumb by many fans. This was clearly meant to be a call back to Misty's fear of Bug types. However, Entomophobia is one of the most common phobias in real life, so Misty's fear of Bug types was not only believable, but in many cases relatable. Meanwhile, Iris' fear of Ice types was seen as silly, since Ice types aren't anymore dangerous or scary than any other type.
    • This was even mocked in-universe in the first episode that showed this fear, Ash's rival Trip pointed out that by that logic, Iris should also be afraid of Dragon types, the type she specialized in, since they deal super effective damage to themselves.note

Is this an Franchise Original Sin if it's intentional (she's called out on it). And if it's "less obvious that the above" (a legit example) is it notable enough to count?

I removed this from AuthorsSavingThrow. My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic

I can't tell what complaint it was meant to fix (it seems irrelevant to the Saving Throw of returning the character to the show after the drama their last speaking role caused). Un-canonizing her old name seems too contentious to be this trope. Anything about this a potentially legit use of this trope?

Her canon name was the Ascended Fanon Derpy Hooves for a bit, which was criticized for being ableist. The implication is presumably that it's in response to that.

Given that Author's Saving Throw is supposed to be about plot development, I'm not sure the name of a minor character could ever qualify.

Franchise Original Sin: Dual Wielding. It is an interesting method of allowing players to mix and match weapons to accompany the situation, but the problem is nearly all the weapons you can dual wield with are inherently weaker than the single wield weapons (including the radical nerfing of the pistol) and thus require something to support it otherwise you have a serious disadvantage. In both this game and Halo 3 it works okay for the campaign but in multiplayer it was a well despised feature. It's telling that they eliminated the whole mechanic after Halo 3 and virtually no one has complained.

That doesn’t sound like a FOS, that’s just sounds more like bad balancing

I have issues with this Bittersweet Ending entry for Frozen II

  • Bittersweet Ending: Only slightly in what's otherwise a standard Happy Ending. The day is saved, pasts of the two kingdoms are reconciled, and nobody dies, but Elsa has chosen to live in the Enchanted Forest away from the others, leaving Anna to rule in her stead in Arendelle. The good news: she can still visit every now and then.

Basically the movie ends on a extremely happy note for every character and despite the two main characters no longer living together, both of them are fine with it and can see each other whenever they want. So I'm not sure how editors are getting Bittersweet Ending out of this.

[up]I don't get it either. The movie doesn't really seem to make that outcome tragic or something.

Then again, Bittersweet Ending is so badly misused that this one case is hardly a surprise.

YMMV.Yandere Simulator:

Memetic Mutation: The game is never leaving alpha.

Note: Due to YandereDev's insanely slow work speed, feature creep, and his love of meme updates, people have come to the conclusion that the game is never going to be finished without significant outside help, let alone even enter beta despite originally aiming for an April 2019 (it's December 2019 as of this entry) release. Talking about the game at all will result in at least this comment. The fact that he gets a massive amount of money each month despite how little work he does doesn't help quell the meme.

The last sentence rubs me the wrong way... $5000 is like, barely above minimum wage? And he makes videos as well as game content?

Here are some reactions to the Dragon Ball Super Galactic Patrol Prisoner Arc I manage to take from Toyotaro's recent interview.

  • Misblamed: Some detractors from the manga of Super considered Merus and Moro to be Toyotaro self-inserts for his own original story. Toyotaro's interview confirms he did create and designed Moro, but outside of Merus's design, the core idea comes from Toriyama.
  • Narm: According to Toyotaro in an interview, he designed Merus to be a Pretty Boy and expected him to become popular. Fan reception so far is that he has a really ugly haircut.

The misblamed example is the one I'm struggling with, I don't know how to work it out. The narm example is legit, as Merus's has been considered rather ugly due to his haircut according to the people I spoke with.

To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back.

Is use of personal technological skills to create safe upgrades also a case of Professor Guniea Pig?

Ex- Thanos gave himself Bionics while Apocalypse used Celestial tech to argument himself. Mr. Sinister integrated mutant dna into himself.

Is any upgrades done by a character via methods they developed themselves an example? They all knew what they were doing. And it was perfectly safe. It's just that only they can do it. Do they count ?

Also, Chinese MC inventing pills to speed up training that works perfectly, where should it go ?

Thanks

Pokémon Sword and Shield lists these under Obvious Rule Patch:

  • The Abilities Own Tempo, Inner Focus, Scrappy, and Oblivious now provide immunity to Intimidate (which was very common in competitive play).
  • The ability Rattled gets a speed boost whenever it's affected by Intimidate.
  • In a huge change, Moody no longer modifies evasiveness or accuracy.

I'm almost entirely sure that the first two definitely do not qualify as "a rule that exists specifically to prevent one problematic situation", and I'm iffy on the third one as well (but evasiveness is what got Moody banned on Smogon, so maybe?).

Agree/disagree?

So I have a case here were characters are being recruited to be spys on their own people. The report this to their superiors and are told to feed false infromation. However, in truth they are actually giving real information to the enemy while at the same time giving false infromation back to their superiors.

Is that a Double Agent or a Double Reverse Quadruple Agent.

[up][up][up][up] Those things were common in the metagame/competitive battling, but I think they're also redundant with Nerf because those exact abilities are mentioned there as well.
