YMMV / Dragon Ball Super Galactic Patrol Prisoner Arc

Go To

  • Arc Fatigue: Ironically similar to the Frieza arc in this regard, since both (initially, in this arc's case) take place on Namek. This arc is by far the longest in the entire Super manga, running for just over two full years on the usual monthly schedule. With each new chapter increasingly dividing the fanbase, many agree that the arc had a very strong start but has since overstayed its welcome. This is far from a universal opinion, however, as many fans have enjoyed it all the way through.
  • Ass Pull:
    • Moro eating Seven-Three and transforming into a more powerful version of himself. While Moro does get stronger from taking energy from people, this power-up has little foreshadowing and makes no sense with how all of Moro's previous displays of power worked. He just eats Seven-Three and gains a new form, with no explanation for what makes it possible.
    • Moro after eating Seven-Three, unlike Seven-Three, has no time limit to the abilities the android stole from others, meaning he can use Piccolo, Gohan and Vegeta's abilities without a limit despite it being a power he took from Seven-Three. Not only does this not get explained, but the story acts like it isn't unusual despite it not making sense for Seven-Three's powers to just work differently. Even with the addition that the gems on his body act as a power source, the lack of a time limit still comes out of no where.
    • Moro's third wish revealed to be of liberating the Galactic Prisoners has been called out to be a cop-out by readers. Quoting Totally Not Mark on Moro: The Trouble Chapters | The Anatomy Of Anime:
This wasn't a surprise. There was no aha moment. At no point we are led to believe Moro valued anyone other than himself, and at no point we could have ever guessed it was going to be planned this way.
    • Grand Supreme Kai coming back and effectively serving as Split Personality for Buu comes out of nowhere, contradicts what had previously been established about Buu's absorption technique, and creates a Voodoo Shark of its own.
  • Broken Base: The quality of the arc is considered this. While initially considered a step up from Toyotaro's takes on the Future Trunks Arc and Tournament of Power, some have come to greatly dislike some of the twists and turns the story takes in the latter half of the arc, especially the final battle and its outcome. While others have been intrigued from beginning to end regardless of what happened, or are simply able to look past the various flaws to enjoy the overall story.
  • Complete Monster: "Planet Eater" Moro is an evil wizard who ten million years ago consumed all life on 320 worlds, keeping the souls of his victims in agony within to empower himself. Breaking free of prison, Moro attacks the world of Namek, killing or consuming most of the Namekians for the Dragon Balls and in order to restore his power. Releasing all of the Galactic Patrol's prisoners, Moro has them scout out numerous worlds for him to devour before he arrives at Earth, sacrificing or disposing of his own men as convenient before trying to consume the world. When pressed to the brink, Moro, before attempting to devour every soul on the planet, even merges with the Earth, knowing if he's defeated, the explosion will destroy the entire galaxy.
  • Evil Is Cool: Moro is well-liked for being a unique villain as compared to previous Dragon Ball antagonist, with particular focus being his use of magic. Fans also like how he also uses his brains and not just his powers to stay one step ahead of the heroes, akin to King Piccolo before him, making him an even more dangerous villain.
  • Fan Nickname: After Moro literally ate Seven-Three just to transform, he has been dubbed Voro by certain fans.
  • I Knew It!:
    • As stated by Geekdom101, many people were correct in their guess about Merus's identity being that of an angel months before chapter 55. Geekdom himself made a video titled Merus the Angel in October 2019, two months before the chapter was released.
    • Likewise, Geekdom101 predicted Moro wouldn't be able to absorb the Androids' energy as they don't generate Ki in Who beats Moro in Dragon Ball Super?, published in March 2019.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!:
    • Some reader accuse the arc of being a reread of the Frieza Saga namely a villain attacking Namek (or New Namek, in this case) and another fight on it. As well as the Saiyan Saga in the latter half with the whole "waiting period" for Goku and Vegeta having to get stronger (or in this case smarter with their techniques). Likewise, most weren't happy with the backtracking on not giving the other Z-Fighters who aren't Saiyans some leeway against the villains after the Tournament of Power arc tried to showcase everyone's strengths.
    • Piccolo's discussion with Goku about how much Vegeta has changed as a character not only has been called Character Shilling at best, but it has been called derivative to the speech Goku and Piccolo had in the Champa saga.
    • Moro devouring Seven-Three to become into a more humanized version of himself with the abilities of others, Merus sacrificing himself to give Goku the capability to win, Goku giving Moro a senzu bean after asking for one from Krillin, and Moro threatening to explode once Goku took too long to finish him off, is a blatant rehash of the end of the Cell saga.
  • Narm:
    • During Vegeta's rematch with Moro, Piccolo comments that it's not in Vegeta's character to misunderstand his opponent's strength. The problem is that Vegeta has been prone over the course of the franchise of making such a mistake. It makes the moment less awesome and more laughable that someone as smart as Piccolo would make such a Horrible Judge of Character despite knowing Vegeta for decades.
  • Pandering to the Base: This arc is chock full of Fanservice, but whether or not the execution is an example of Tropes Are Not Bad is very much a YMMV proposition.
    • A large portion of the arc's midsection focuses on Piccolo, Gohan and the rest of the Dragon Team fighting Moro's army of convicts on Earth. It has long been a point of contention among the fanbase that these characters had been neglected in previous Super arcs, especially in the manga, so them taking some much needed panel-time was welcomed by many readers. Yamcha and Chaozu even come out of retirement! On the other hand, some fans have labelled the chapters focusing on them as gratuitous Padding comparable to anime filler, since their only purpose in the plot is to dispose of Moro's Quirky Mini Boss Squad as well as assorted Mooks.
    • The presence of more visceral, gory violence throughout the arc addresses the oft-criticized lack of it in previous arcs.
    • After most of the previous storylines in Super experimented with unconventional antagonists, Moro's characterization as a truly irredeemable villain seems to be a calculated attempt to recapture the magic of iconic past villains such as King Piccolo, Freeza and Cell. It doesn't help that Moro shares noticeable similarities with all of them, which reaches its apex when he absorbs an Android to take on a more elegant, humanoid form, exactly like Cell.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: At no point is the Grand Supreme Kai ever given a chance to speak with Shin during the brief time his personality is in control of Majin Buu's body, which could have led to a bittersweet reunion between the Supreme Kai.
  • Win Back the Crowd:
    • After his lackluster adaptations of the "Future Trunks Arc" and the "Universal Survival Arc", a lot of readers felt now that this arc is one for Toyotaro. Many point out how his art and particularly his panelling has significantly improved, with his fights being much more creative.
    • The ending also won back a lot of viewers, with Moro merging with the Earth giving him back some of his uniqueness in terms of design and powers, the other characters (especially Vegeta) being important in defeating Moro after it seeming like Goku was going to save the day solo, and Goku acknowledging giving Moro a Senzu Bean was a huge mistake.
    • Due to how greatly Out of Focus Uub is, many were happy to see that Uub played a big part in helping Goku and Vegeta defeat Moro, which is the most he's done to help defeat a villain since the Baby Arc of GT.
