Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

LRLEO tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/LimitedRealLifeExamplesOnly via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]
%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

Anyone Can Die has this in the description:

This is definitely Truth in Television, because all living organisms are mortal and will eventually die for any number of reasons, with no protection by meddling fiction writers to save them, so No Real Life Examples, Please!.

The reason why Anyone Can Die is No Real Life Examples, Please! is because it's a narrative trope and there are no "plot-important" characters. There are also no writers to determine what happens to anyone either way. This sentence should be rewritten.

Aren't both true? I mean, we don't need examples of that any more than we need real life examples of Reality Ensues.

Australia is no longer listed on Everything Trying to Kill You since that trope is NRLEP, but it's still listed on Death World along with other real places.

Should Suicide Watch be no real life? I think so, since it's a suicide tropes and all of those are no real life.

We generally don't do preemptive listings in this thread. Since there are no problematic entries, there is no need to worry about it.

Suicide is such a sensitive topic that I think it should be discussed.

There is one real life entry that I commented out. The edit reason for that addition was very passive-aggressive, and it actually violates wiki rules about adding examples — they should be concrete and specific, not general advice about what doctors and authorities can do or think.

I can hardly imagine what real life examplesof Suicide Watch would be interesting and valid without sounding like the much deprecated troper tales.

Re: Death World - Quite a few fictional examples listed in the example section are inspired by Earth or the locations within (Australia in particular appears three times).

Yes, but that still doesn't necessarily make the Real Life Australia an example. A fictional depiction of Adolf Hitler could be a Complete Monster, whether it adds fantastic elements or depicts him reasonably accurately albeit fictionalised. But that doesn't make the real Hitler a Complete Monster.

Hopeless War: The Real Life section needs some example vetting and cleanup, and has formatting/Conversation issues.

The social work one should go on General Examples issues.

Cowboy BeBop at His Computer has a long list of examples on the "Other" page that are about news outlets getting facts about real life (as opposed to media) wrong. Wouldn't those be examples of Critical Research Failure instead, which I'm not sure are even allowed?

[up]Not unless the errors are regarding basic, everyday facts. Misuse of Critical Research Failure to mean research errors in general is basically the new Did Not Do the Research, which was discussed in its TRS thread.

"The Reason You Suck" Speech seems far too controversial and volatile a topic to involve in real life. There are far too many speeches that can be used for all sorts of agendas which would have no place on this wiki, and also poses the risk of Flame Bait and Edit Warring. The real life examples would also include a lot of Web Originals that involve real life disputes.

[up][up][up] I don't think there was ever a general trope for "work makes factual errors" or "non-fiction work makes factual errors" (as it was often used); people just wanted to complain about it, so they went from Did Not Do The Research (an index) to Critical Research Failure to Dan Browned and Cowboy BeBop at His Computer.

Amusing Injuries

Other than injuries being far from amusing, they are not something you instantly recover from in Real Life. For example, a mouse smashing a mallet on the cat's head is funny and carnage-less in a cartoon, but in reality that would crack someone's skull open, if not crush their entire head, killing them.

Also, I feel like we should have folders for pages that are "Subjective in Real Life", "Too Creepy/Disgusting", and "No Interesting Examples". Some creepy tropes like I'm a Humanitarian and Cold-Blooded Torture are listed under "Flamebait", while they can attract that, they're mostly far too Squick in the real world.

Also tropes that can be taken as subjective in real life, when they're supposed to be objective. Like Bald Of Awesome (yes that one is too common in real life but the "Awesome" makes it more so).

And Missing Steps Plan and others just have no real life examples because none of them would be worth listing. Yet it's listed under Too Common.

I would like to propose that Villainous Gentrification be made an official No Real Life Examples. While it doesn’t currently have any real life examples, it isn’t officially such, and the possibility for it is likely just asking for trouble.

Someone has just added a Real Life example on the Esoteric Happy Ending page. Is the page actually allowed to have a Real Life example given how subjective and YMMV it is?

I don't see how any ending trope can have real life examples, TBH.

indeed. aside from the Ending Tropes bit (which i dont know if i agree with - one could make a case for applying ending tropes to, say, real life wars, etc.), it clearly runs afoul of ROCEJ.

ill cut it.

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
