YMMV / Hailey's On It!

Go To

  • Adorkable:
    • Scott is ditzy, clumsy, eccentric, and socially inept, but he nonetheless makes an impression.
    • Hailey herself, to a lesser extent. She is a Socially Awkward Hero who is fond of superhero comics and birdhouses, making her all the more charming.
    • Kennedy's line in "Along for the Slide" ("It rules, just like rules!") sounds oddly adorable.
  • Aluminum Christmas Trees:
    • The show's location — Oceanside, California is indeed a real city. It is located at the northern border of San Diego County leading into Orange County, hence things like Scott's favorite player being Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels (who actually play in Anaheim, home of Disneyland and the signature city of Orange County) and the show's promotional material featuring the Santa Monica Pier.
    • Oceanside High School- the school which Hailey and Scott study it also happens to be a real high school, despite its simplistic name potentially making some viewers believe it was created for the show. Notably, its real-life counterpart features the pirate as its mascot instead of the crabs.
  • Angst? What Angst?: You will think that a character defined for being risk-averse will have a lot of issues and anxiety getting involved in all the wacky challenges of the series, but Hailey rarely seems too concerned about accomplishing the next point on the list.
  • Ass Pull: In "Get Whale Soon", Hailey fails to save the beached baby whale in time before the rescue crew does, but is able to complete her list item "save a whale" anyways by saving her neighbor's dog Winston, because the dog also has the family surname: Whale.
  • Awesome Music: The Future's in My Hands is an upbeat and energy-filled piece, perfect for being the theme song for a show about taking risks and stepping out of your comfort zone. Auli'i Cravalho really managed to show off her singing chops in this one. Extra credit goes to the extended theme song and the chorus featured in it.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Hailey has been interpreted as autistic by some fans due to her social anxiety, low social skills, and love for birds and birdhouses, which could be interpreted as special interests.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Becker Denoga became one since her proper introduction in "Catching Felines", owing to her being a Butch Lesbian, her personality as well as being the first major LGBT+ character in the show. While she's mainly a recurring character who gets episodes focused on her, she holds as much (if not more) importance to many fans.
  • Fandom Rivalry: Like with many other shows before it, fans of The Owl House were quick to deride it for not being "The Next Owl House" due to its more episodic (but still serialized) format, not having as many dark themes or solely due to the fact it's different. Fans were quick to point out to detractors that the show wasn't given the opportunity to establish its own identity and was being unfairly compared to an already completed show.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In the first episode, Scott says that Hailey hasn't completed a single item on her list since she first created it, and all of the options are shown unchecked. Then came "Dance Like No Mom is Watching", where Hailey decides to complete a list item that Beta reveals she's already accomplished two years prior. Scott soon remembers that she did complete it; she just couldn't remember it due to having a slushy headache, so she never checked it off.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Some fans watch the show for Hailey herself, mainly due to her introverted and risk-averse personality that they can relate to.
  • LGBT Fanbase: "Catching Felines" revealing that Becker (Scott's sister) is into girls and developing a crush on Hailey gave the show a sizable fandom in this category. This only grew as Becker and Kennedy became a couple in "Along For The Slide", while the show went on to have LGBT representation that was treated fairly normally and naturally.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "My favorite Disney character is Sombra!" note
    • Leather Jacket Haileynote
    • The next Starco. note
  • Moe: Hailey is a Bespectacled Cutie who is generally sweet and gentle. Her childhood flashbacks make her look even more cute.
  • Questionable Casting: A.C is clearly a very young teenager, and short on top of that. So hearing the adult-sounding voice of Josh Brener, sounding exactly like his adult character from DuckTales, can be pretty bizarre. Being used to it from his portrayal of Donatello might make a difference.
  • Ron the Death Eater: With Disney's overabundance of twist villains in recent years, viewers started jumping to the conclusion that the Professor had some secret evil agenda. But the more is shown of her personal life, the less likely it seems.
  • So Okay, It's Average: Animated Disney Channel shows have had quite a hot streak with Phineas and Ferb, Gravity Falls, Amphibia, The Owl House, DuckTales, Big City Greens, The Ghost and Molly McGee, and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. This series has yet to show any distinction from any of those series. While fans say the show has decent animation, the stories aren't that engaging, and the characters have very few endearing traits.
  • Tainted by the Preview: The trailers and TV spots emphasizing that one of the points on the list is Hailey kissing his best friend, Scott, lead certain viewers to be worried that the show would end up turning this conflict into a Romantic Plot Tumor, especially after some viewers noticed the similarities with the infamous Star/Marco pairing from Star vs. the Forces of Evil, which was also accused of derailing the main story of that show.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • The premise of the show is that Hailey is a risk-averse teen that has a long to-do list of stuff she didn't do because she was afraid, until The Professor tells her completing the list will be the first step on Saving the World. With this in mind, you will think this would allow Hailey to get her fair share of Character Development involving her leaving her comfort zone and learning to live at her fullest, but Hailey rarely seems to angst or have an issue with doing the things of the list and even in the pilot, she immediately starts following the list after The Professor's visit with her major concern being kissing Scott.
    • The Chaos bots threatening the future and meddling with Hailey's attempts to complete her journal is majorly hyped up, but they rarely show up, only appearing in a handful of episodes, often just to reinforce the concept of the bad future rather than actually interfere.
    • "Catching Felines" reveals that Becker has a crush on Hailey and plans to kiss her someday. However, this doesn't affect much of, or provide an extra obstacle to Hailey's task of kissing Scott in certain episodes, such as "Kissed Opportunities." This could have added an extra layer of tension to said episode instead of implying a possible addition of A.C. not minding almost having to kiss Hailey. This plot-line is dropped in "Along For The Slide," due to a misunderstanding, with Hailey nor Scott ever finding out about it.
    • "Along For The Slide" also reveals Becker's rival Kennedy who's revealed near the end to have a crush on her all along. This subplot between the two could've been gradually developed a bit, instead of both dating immediately after Kennedy's confession.
    • In "U.F.Whoa!" it's discovered that the Chaos bots use a battery designed by future Hailey, leading Hailey to wonder if she is actually a villain in the future... for about 5 seconds before the Professor reveals that Hailey's batteries are so good that literally everything uses it. The identity crisis could have been a great episode or even arc for Hailey, but it's wrapped up nigh-instantaneously.
    • "Who Let the Dogs Out? (Hailey)" fiddles with the idea that Hailey cannot alter the list in any way. Imagine the possibilities of her recklessly adding something of her own whims because she wants to. Instead of any actual consequences of this, nothing happens much to Beta's surprise. This also allows the show to maintain Status Quo Is God as long as it can by having Hailey add anything she wants to her list whenever she wants so she never has to kiss Scott.
