Sleepless in New York

An epidemic of a new strain of Bird Flu is raging through New York City. A group consisting of two journalists, Katie Thompson and Uyami Akihiro, Nina Saito, an up-and-coming young doctor, her boyfriend and later husband Felipe Reyes, who dreams of opening his own dance studio, and Uyami's boyfriend, a Wall Street executive, Masahiko. When Nina's brother Hideki dies at the beginning of the novel, he is assumed to have died from a punctured lung from combat in Afghanistan. But he was, in reality, the first victim of this epidemic. Florence, Hideki's widow, discovers the cure, to the jealousy and anger of Nina, who was high school friends with her.

Provides examples of

  • Adorkable Felipe, Masahiko, Katie. Nina shows signs of this when she first meets Felipe.
  • Ambiguously Brown Felipe is half white Spaniard, half Roma. Masahiko lampshades the fact that the baby will be so as well.
Masahiko: Your baby's going to be a latté.
  • Asexuality Katie is an aromantic asexual.
  • Asian and Nerdy Nina and Masahiko. Both are Japanese-American, although Nina is a second-generation immigrant.
  • Big Applesauce Almost the entire storyline occurs in New York City.
  • Bittersweet Ending Almost everyone has lost a loved one. Florence dies of the disease before the cure can be produced for her. Nina's parents, Felipe and Katie's fathers, Masahiko's brother and sister-in-law, Nina's boss and mentor Dr. Witte, and Uyami's publisher Aiko, to whom he was very close, all died. But Masahiko and Uyami get married, Katie is given an award for her coverage of the epidemic, and Nina and Felipe are expecting a baby boy, and Felipe manages to open his much sought-after dance studio.
  • Christmas Cake Nina. Katie too, but that's to be expected in a woman who cares for neither romance nor sex.
  • CloudCuckoolander Felipe. One of his faults.
  • Coming-Out Story Katie, Uyami and Masahiko. Only Masahiko's ends well.
  • Deadpan Snarker Most notably, Katie and Masahiko. Everyone else gets their moments.
  • Drives Like Crazy Felipe's fatal flaw. Thankfully, it's not so fatal.
  • Envy Nina's biggest flaw is her almost uncontrollable jealousy for Florence. It's what makes her feel so guilty at the end.
  • Hot Gypsy Man Felipe.
  • Intrepid Reporter Katie and Uyami.
  • Incurable Cough of Death The Bird Flu starts out as this.
  • Latin Lover Played With and eventually lampshaded by Nina. Felipe's more cheerful and upbeat than the usual smooth-talking, seductive type.
  • Les Yay Nina and Katie, to the point that Masahiko thinks Nina, Katie, and Felipe are having a ménage a trois.
  • Mr. Fanservice Felipe, full stop.
  • Primal Scene Nina accidentally walks in on Uyami and Masahiko "doing the dirty."
  • Please Put Some Clothes On Masahiko to Felipe, who walks into a room shirtless in one scene.
  • Romani Felipe is half-Roma, half-white Spaniard.
  • Sassy Black Woman Played with and ultimately averted with Katie, who is entirely too deadpan for your typical variety.
  • Sexy Discretion Shot Nina and Felipe's honeymoon scene starts with them drinking champagne and kissing, and ends with both of them sweaty and gasping for breath. And when they confess their love to one another, the scene fades out with them kissing and fades back in to the morning after. And the scene where Nina blunders in on Uyami and Masahiko is never described in detail...
  • Sex God Felipe is implied to be one.
  • Shirtless Scene All three male leads get one at one point.
  • Shout-Out To Will and Grace, Avenue Q, and the lampooning of the Yaoi genre of manga.
  • Shown Their Work Very detailed explanation of the treatment of the medical conditions and treatments. Also, Nina and Felipe's wedding has elements of Japanese, Spanish, and American weddings to it. Also, Felipe points out that "Gypsy" is a racial slur.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts Uyami and Masahiko at the end. Nina and Felipe have elements of it as well.
  • The Plague Should be named: The Plague: Original Fiction
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife Inverted with Nina and Felipe. Although Nina isn't ugly, she constantly looks tired and much older than she actually is. Felipe disagrees.
  • Wartime Wedding Well, Plaguetime weddings, more like. Nina and Felipe get married in the middle of it, while Uyami and Masahiko get married at the end.
  • Wham Line
    Katie: *coughs*
Dr. Witte: I'm sorry. There's nothing we can do.
    Felipe: I think I have a fever.
  • Yaoi Fangirl Nina and Florence.
  • Yaoi Guys Uyami and Masahiko.
  • Younger Than They Look Nina's age ranges from her mid twenties to early thirties as the story goes on. She looks about forty-five.
