Recap / Superman And Lois S 3 E 13 What Kills You Only Makes You Stronger

Go To

Lex begins his plan to get revenge on all those who sent him to prison.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Since this version of Doomsday is a mutated Bizarro, he retains the latter's ability to breathe fire and fly.
  • Adaptive Ability: Bizarro gained this after Mannheim's experiments on him.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Clark is horrified about what Luthor did to Bizarro.
  • Amicable Exes: There are two examples that play with this.
    • First, there is Lana and Kyle. While Lana is obviously very happy for Kyle having a baby with Chrissy, she still expresses doubt to John Henry, as it is happening very fast, and when Kyle publicly proposes to Chrissy during the meteor shower, she is obviously not okay with it.
    • Jordan, on Clark's behest, apologizes to Sarah. While she accepts the apology and there is room for them eventually normalizing their relationship, at the current moment, Sarah is not ready to be friends with him again.
  • Bad Liar:
    • Jordan and Jon see right through their parents' excuse for wanting to take a vacation with them, though they are okay with it.
    • Lana also sees through her home alarm system having no problems and John Henry just using it as an excuse to ask her out.
  • Barbie Doll Anatomy: Doomsday's mutations have left him a hulking mass of flesh devoid of any genitalia, with the only recognizable bit of him left being the inverted Superman symbol on his chest.
  • Batman Grabs a Gun: The situation is so serious that Superman is willing to kill Doomsday—despite recognizing him as the resurrected Bizarro—by impaling him on a skyscraper spire. However, Doomsday just revives after a few moments.
  • Blood from the Mouth:
    • Bizarro spits out blood after his first death at Luthor's hands.
    • Superman ends up spitting out blood after a severe beating from Doomsday.
  • Came Back Strong: Thanks to Bruno's experimentation, Bizarro revives every time he's killed and gets stronger each time.
  • Came Back Wrong: At the same time, each death causes Bizarro to mutate, eventually creating Doomsday.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode — and the season — ends with Superman and Doomsday about to finish their battle on the Moon.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Superman once again proves his smarts by, when Doomsday drives him into the water, freezing him into an ice block. When the monster begins to break free, Superman impales him on the spike of the Luthor building. It only stops him temporarily, but hey, points for trying.
  • Composite Character: Bizarro gets stronger every time he is killed, and develops the bulky, spiky physique of Doomsday.
  • Death Montage: Luthor repeatedly kills Bizarro in order to make him stronger, eventually turning him into Doomsday.
  • Ear Ache: While Otis is shown to have survived his encounter with Bizarro last episode, his right ear was bitten off.
  • Easily Forgiven: Averted with Coach Gaines, who outright tells Jon that he will never forgive him for screwing up the football season. Even after Jon works his hardest setting up the event for the meteor shower, Gaines refuses to give him any public credit in a Bait-and-Switch.
  • Heroic Second Wind: After the beating Doomsday gives him, Superman's memories of his family enable him to get it together and go for round two against Doomsday.
  • Honey Trap: Sam's date Gretchen is revealed to be working for Luthor, luring him away from the meteor shower watch to be captured.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Superman immobilizes Doomsday with freeze-breath and then impales him on a skyscraper spire. This being Doomsday, he just revives and keeps coming.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Clark and Lois tell their sons about Tal's Italian villa and plan a trip there.
    • The Kents learn about John Henry and Nat planning to move to Metropolis.
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: Luthor and Otis call Bizarro "it."
  • Morning Sickness: Chrissy running to the bathroom is enough to tell Kyle she's pregnant with his child.
  • Mythology Gag: Doomsday being created by subjecting a Kryptonian to scientific experimentation and then repeated Resurrective Immortality was Doomsday's history as revealed in Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey.
  • Out of Focus: Sophie gets her obligatory one scene where she says one line before disappearing from the episode and probably from the rest of the series.
  • Relationship Upgrade: After several episodes of Ship Tease, Lana and John Henry become a couple.
  • Revenge: Luthor has Judge Regan killed offscreen for sentencing him.
  • Shout-Out: After Clark suggests making matching shirts for the family vacation, Jonathan asks him not to go full Griswold.
  • This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: Clark explicitly warns John, Nat and Jordan "Don't!" when the battle with Doomsday begins and they all look ready to help him take on the monster. He then fights Doomsday solo. It's possible he feels that, given Doomsday's sheer power, that they would be more liabilities than assets.
  • Time Skip: It's been 32 days since the last episode.
  • Trash the Set: Doomsday destroys the Kents' barn.
  • Wacky Marriage Proposal: Kyle proposes to Chrissy during the meteor shower, in front of everyone.
