Be careful who you make an enemy of.

Kelsey had hurt him. He’d made Devon feel like he might be a part of something, and then he’d thrown Devon away. It stung, like being stabbed with a sharp object. He’d just wanted Kelsey to feel something similar. And maybe he’d wanted Kelsey to end up scarred, like Devon was scarred by every rejection he’d endured.

But he hadn’t wanted this. Not this.

Class troublemaker Devon tries anything to get his crush, popular girl Heather, to notice him. Though everyone, including his best friend Mick, can tell that she hates his guts, he will take negative attention if it means it's attention he's getting. Then a new kid comes to school– smart, sociable Kelsey, who starts out as Devon and Mick's friend, but soon rises in the popularity ranks and attracts the attention of Heather. Upset at him for slighting them, Devon decides to play a prank on Kelsey... only for it to backfire spectacularly.

The seventh Five Nights at Freddy's: Fazbear Frights story, and the last of the third book, 1:35 A.M. It was adapted into the graphic novel series in 2023.

Tropes related to “The New Kid”:

  • Abandoned Area: Devon and Mick like to make abandoned buildings their clubhouses. When their first is demolished, they go looking for another, and Devon stumbles upon some kind of Freddy's or Fredbear's in the middle of the woods.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: Heather definitely thinks Devon's a creep.
  • Abusive Parents: All Devon remembers of his father is him yelling and throwing things at him and his mom. While his mom isn't outwardly abusive, it's mentioned that she continuously puts pressure on Devon to "be somebody" and not end up like her.
  • Accidental Murder: Devon pressures Kelsey to get inside the Fredbear suit, only for the springlocks to unexpectedly go off. He and Mick are then forced to cover it up. Except that might not actually be what happened at all.
  • Ambiguously Evil: Fredbear/Golden Freddy and Kelsey.
    • Was Golden Freddy actively luring Devon to be eaten, or was it sim ply retaliating against him after seeing what he did to Kelsey? Or was it simply a malfunctioning suit?
    • Is Kelsey actively luring kids to Freddy's, or does he have some other agenda? Are the two working together, or is them getting involved together a coincidence?
  • Ambiguously Human: Kelsey claims to have family and bleeds while inside the Fredbear suit, but at the same time his corpse disappears and he reappears in another town. Is he some kind of spirit?
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Heather mentions at the beginning of her story that her younger siblings drive her crazy. In response, Devon writes a short story about them being brutally killed, which really unnerves her.
  • Antagonist Title: With Kelsey being the New Kid.
  • Are We There Yet?: Something both Mick and Kelsey's sisters do on road trips.
  • Asshole Victim: Devon definitely exhibits some psychopathic tendencies. He writes and presents a story where two real children are brutally murdered, kills a bird without hesitation, and plans to traumatize Kelsey for the crime of not hanging out with him for a day. Keep in mind, this is after Kelsey offers him a sincere apology. However, at the same time, it's clear that Devon is an angsty teenager with his own issues, and he never intended to actually hurt Kelsey, just scare him a little.
  • Attention Whore: Devon acts out solely to get attention, likely due to his family issues. Even negative attention makes him happy, as shown when Heather pushes him and he's only focusing on the fact that she touched him.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: As Devon's already planning his cruel prank on Kelsey, he scares Mick by throwing a rock at a bird and killing it mid-flight, then proceeding to act like nothing was wrong and he hadn't done anything unusual.
  • Big Fun: Mick is shown as a little heavier than the other boys. He's also jovial and friendly.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Of their friend group, Kelsey's the blonde, Devon's got jet-black hair, and Mick's the redhead (though he's technically strawberry blonde).
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Devon is stated to be this. He's actually quite smart, able to recognize cloud formations instantly and answer questions right in class if he actually tries. But he also sees school as a boring waste, and is rebelling against his Mom's pushing for him to apply himself, so he just doesn't do the work.
  • Carload of Cool Kids: When Heather and her group take over the boys' trip to the hardware store, they drive away, leaving the boys in the dust. Another car soon drives by, and someone whistles at them and calls them losers. Just to rub it in.
  • Central Theme: Justice: in class, Kelsey says that justice is the act of bringing people to the same level, while Heather views it as payback. Kelsey doesn't seem to like her interpretation, but if his ghost is the one that attacked Devon, he may have changed his mind.
  • Childhood Friends: Devon and Mick have been best friends for over a decade.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: The Springlock suit, in keeping with Five Nights at Freddy's tradition.
  • Deadly Prank: Devon just wants to scare Kelsey a little. He doesn't know about the Springlocks, though, which brutally kill his friend before his eyes.
  • Disappeared Dad: Devon's father abandoned him and his mother when he was little. This is probably why Devon reacts so badly to Kelsey's abandonment.
  • Freudian Excuse: Devon's actions stem from his father's abandonment and his mother's pressure.
  • Full-Name Ultimatum: Right at the beginning of the story, we get Devon's full name when his teacher snaps at him for his disturbing story: "Devon Blaine Marks!"
  • Gainax Ending: This ending takes an abrupt turn and becomes more bewildering than any other story thus far when Devon sees a corpse that's not Kelsey's stuffed inside of the active Fredbear suit before dying. Afterwards, Kelsey inexplicably appears alive and well at a new school, apparently intent on luring more children to their doom for reasons unknown.
  • Gender-Blender Name: In America, "Kelsey" is usually a name given to girls.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Devon sure doesn't like that Kelsey and Heather are hitting it off.
  • Growing Up Sucks: In Mick's eyes, as he views the real world as oppressive.
  • Here We Go Again!: The story ends with Kelsey at a new school, targeting two new loners he sees. It's implied that his cycle is finding outcasts at school and luring them to abandoned places.
  • Hoist by Their Own Petard: In hopes of getting enough time to hide the body, Devon asks Mick to over for him for as long as it takes. This means that nobody will go looking for him when he goes missing.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Heather is absolutely not interested in Devon and finds him kinda creepy. Devon lives in a fantasy where she actually likes him and will eventually come around.
  • Ironic Echo: "Accidents happen."
  • Jealous Romantic Witness: Devon, when Heather starts flirting with Kelsey in front of him.
  • Kiddie Kid: Mick, which plays a part in his isolation.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Devon leaves his friend to die in Golden Freddy? Well, Golden Freddy gets him next.
  • Mind Screw: Wait, Kelsey was a... ghost? Spirit? Monster? How did he– but he– how–?
  • Monster of the Week: Fredbear / Golden Freddy, though Kelsey may also count.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: This definitely wasn't Devon's plan, but he sure did push Kelsey to put on the suit.
  • Mysterious Past: Kelsey appears out of nowhere and references his family, implying he's a regular child. After he goes missing, the police search for him, also implying that they buy his disguise, which would take a lot of convincing. However, his body disappears from Fredbear and reappears in a new school, trying to start the cycle over, implying something more supernatural is going on with him.
  • Nerd Glasses: On Mick.
  • New Transfer Student: Kelsey, making him the Title Character.
  • No Full Name Given: Kelsey's the only major character without a surname, adding to his Mysterious Past.
  • Not Quite Dead: Kelsey, assuming he was alive in the first place.
  • Redheads Are Uncool: Nerdy, unpopular Mick has strawberry blonde curls.
  • Stalker with a Crush: The narration literally admits to Devon stalking Heather before, listening in on her conversations in hopes of finding a way into her group. He doesn't intend her any harm, at the least, but he really can't get it through his head that she's not interested.
  • Stereotypical Nerd: Mick, with his childish interests, big glasses, and lack of social skills.
  • This Is My Side: Mick and his sister share a room, divided in half between them.
  • Totally Radical: Mick uses exclusively outdated slang.
  • Trauma Button: Abandonment and being ignored for Devon.
  • Troubled Teen: Devon's starting to scare his fellow classmates and teachers, starting with his insanely dark and murderous fantasy stories, and escalating to when he kills a bird in front of Mick, then suggests he uses the feathers for their game.
  • Twist Villain: Turns out Kelsey wasn't as innocent as he first appeared.
  • Uncertain Doom: Devon may not have been killed by Fredbear? Though considering he doesn't turn up at school the next day, there's nobody around his location, he can't send for help, and he's already bleeding out, things don't look good.
  • Undying Loyalty: Mick, to Devon. Turns out to be Devon's downfall, as Mick will do anything he says, even covering for him when he goes somewhere dangerous.
  • Wham Shot: Devon looks inside Golden Freddy, and sees black curly hair. Kelsey had straight blonde hair. As he wonders who exactly is in the suit, it forces him inside.
  • Vengeful Ghost: Possibly Fredbear, who might be attacking Devon as revenge for what he did to Kelsey. As for Kelsey, it's unknown if he's acting out of malice or through some other twisted plan.
  • Youthful Freckles: On Mick, who doesn't want to grow up as fast as his friends.
