Recap / Fairy May Cry, 24 "Edolas"

Go To

Learning about the existence of another world that exists alongside Earthland, Dante, Modeus, Natsu, Happy, Wendy, and Carla travel to Edolas in order to rescue the members of Fairy Tail and the people of Magnolia. But what they find there will leave them stunned...

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Carla's opinion of the 'disguises' (purple leaves) that Natsu gets them, finding the whole thing more amusing than annoying.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Delivered twice by Modeus.
    • One to Happy when the latter's over his fear-induced hunger results in a Growling Gut, assuring him there is nothing to be scared of.
    • Again to Wendy after she compliments his demon form.
  • Alternate Self: Just like in canon, Edolas Fairy Tail is full of these to the Earthland version.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Dante quickly figures out Carla knows much more than what she is saying, and correctly deduces her secret mission relates to the Dragon Slayers.
  • Bizarro Universe: Edolas has green skies, purple trees, and floating islands and rivers.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Dante uses Natsu's signature line before entering the Anima.
Dante: I'm all fired up now!
  • Brought Down to Badass: Like in canon, all the mages lose their magic upon being transported to Edolas, while Dante and Modeus lose their demonic energy (removing their Healing Factor and reducing their physical prowess). Despite this, the latter two are still Master Swordsmen and all of them maintain their impressive physical prowess. Notably, Natsu and Dante manage to easily tear apart a giant fish monster.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • When Dante presses Carla for the secret she's keeping from them, Natsu brings up that he didn't tell any of them about his dad in the Vergil arc.
    • Dante mentions having entered and escaped the Underworld three times already, a nod to how he first met Trish.
  • Counting to Three: Dante does this twice.
    • When Agni and Rudra reveal themselves as Talking Weapons, he does so in anticipation of everyone's screaming reaction.
    • After stepping on a malleable rock, he does so in anticipation of something happening.
  • Dies Differently In The Adaptation: The giant fish is killed by the combined efforts of Natsu and Dante rather than falling to its demise.
  • Dumbass Has a Point:
    • Downplayed, since neither is dumb per se, but upon arriving in Edolas, Natsu and Dante just pick a random direction to walk in, pointing out that with their luck they're bound to find something.
    • In the same chapter Happy constantly bemoans their lack of food, which Modeus agrees with, citing they haven't eaten in the hours since they arrived.
  • Face of a Thug: Natsu and Agni & Rudra attempt to ask a fisherman for directions, though the expression of the former and the latter two being talking swords predictably causes him to run away screaming.
  • Gilligan Cut: The below happens before and after Natsu's idea of a disguise.
Dante: I'm in. So long as I don't look ridiculous.
    (five minutes later)
Dante: (covered in pink leaves) I look ridiculous.
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: Natsu points out Dante kept his mum on his family situation for most of the Vergil arc when the latter tries to grill Carla for information on her secret mission. While he agrees to drop it, Dante is right to be suspicious given the cat is deliberately withholding relevant information, while he himself came clean as soon as Vergil showed up.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Happy freaks out at hearing Agni & Rudra speak for the first time despite being a talking cat. Lampshaded by Modeus.
  • Instant Expert: Natsu picks up Agni and Rudra to compensate for his lost magic, and proves rather proficient at Dual Wielding.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Dante's decision to enter a whole other world to rescue his friends reminds Modeus of his father Sparda.
  • Mama Bear: Carla veers into smothering territory with this, protesting at Wendy so much as carrying a weapon, despite Dante and Wendy pointing out she needs something to defend herself with.
  • Martial Pacifist: Despite having abandoned the sword, Modeus is sworn to help his new friends. To that end, he takes up Nevan, which he wields rather skillfully.
  • Master Swordsman: Downplayed by Natsu, who shows impressive skills with Agni & Rudra despite typically being a Bare-Fisted Monk. Dante's subsequent display blows him out of the water.
  • Mr. Exposition:
    • Carla and Modeus explain both Edolas and the concept of alternate worlds to the others.
    • Dante explains his Devil Arms are souls of demons he has defeated to the others when they all manifest around him.
  • The Nose Knows: Subverted by Natsu and Wendy, who note the air in Edolas is so full of new scents they can't track their friends.
  • No-Sell: On top of the canon example of dragons, demons prove immune to the effects of the Anima.
  • Not Me This Time: After the above Face of a Thug moment, the group tells Agni & Rudra not to speak around locals. Despite this, the second set of people they come across are scared stiff at the sight of Happy, before running away in fear. The two swords quickly claim this trope almost verbatim.
  • Not So Stoic: Even Carla has a Freak Out at hearing Agni & Rudra talk for the first time.
  • Power of Trust: While he agrees to Carla's request to kill her if she acts suspiciously, Dante refuses to do the same for Happy, citing he trusts the guy. Even Carla relents that this is understandable.
  • Super Mode: On top of Dante bringing out his Devil Trigger again, Modeus reveals his true demon form, a downplayed example given the power boost is minor.
  • Talking Weapons: Agni & Rudra speak their first words in front of the other members, to everyone's shock.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Agni & Rudra are allowed to talk while in Edolas by Dante, and quickly hit it off with the present members of Fairy Tail. They also appreciate being wielded by Natsu, who in turn finds them cool.
  • Weirdness Magnet: Discussed by Dante and Natsu, who note they hardly need to look for something unusual to find it. Even Carla agrees.
