Go To

Convergent Devil is a One Piece fanfiction written by Epsilon110 What If? story found on Archive of Our Own where Luffy ate a different devil fruit, specifically, the Mogi-Mogi Fruit. It can be found here.

Starting in March 2024, the fic has been undergone a rework.

This fic contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass: Luffy barely even tries against Arlong, only taking two hits the entire fight and both because he allows them to happen. His starting bounty is also nearly double what it was in canon at 55 million.
  • Adaptational Curves: Alvida is far more muscular than she canonically was after eating the Slip-Slip Fruit, with the author stating that the fruit merely got rid of her fat rather than the muscle built up from swinging her heavy iron mace around.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Robin joins the Straw Hats while they're still in the East Blue, rather than first meeting them at Whiskey Peak.
  • Adaptational Explanation: In canon, there's no real explanation for why Alvida believes the only difference eating her devil fruit caused was getting rid of her freckles besides possibly just being extremely delusional. Here, it's stated to be a side effect of her devil fruit to prevent extreme body dysphoria over suddenly weighing roughly one tenth as much as before.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: Downplayed. Luffy is more prone to violence, but only against enemies or those that otherwise deserve it, such as immediately attacking Don Krieg on instinct or killing Nezumi while he's helpless.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Rather than a Rubber Man, Luffy can mimic the body parts of any animal he's studied. He's particularly fond of beetles and crustaceans for their exoskeletons and impressive strength.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Unlike canon where Arlong merely shot Bell-mere in the head, here he had her shot in the stomach and tied to a cross in the middle of town so everyone had to watch her slowly die. Then Arlong ordered her body to be left to rot, with anyone attempting to take her down beaten. Nami was forced to buy her mother's body back just so she could get a burial.
  • Adaptational Job Change: Nami is made the Straw Hat crew's first mate and Zoro the second mate, much to the former's dismay.
  • Amazonian Beauty: Alvida is just as beautiful as she was in canon after eating her Devil Fruit, but is now explicitly much more muscular than before.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Buggy calls out Zoro for saying he made up everything he said about Haki despite the fact he is a talking head and Luffy can transform. Luffy supports Buggy by pointing out Robin can also grow arms.
  • Boxing Lessons for Superman: Luffy had to study anatomy books (or dissect animals) in order to use his Devil Fruit to its full potential.
  • Cassandra Truth: Luffy, Nami, Zoro, and Robin are all sceptical of Buggy's claims of being a former member of Roger's crew when he first brings it up.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Garp forces Nezumi to wear his mouse-eared hood as part of his uniform due to both the man's name and for irritating him with his brown-nosing.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Robin casually uses her clutch technique to break Kuro's knees and elbows before he can even launch a single attack.
    • Luffy reflexively punches Krieg with a mantis shrimp arm, killing him in one blow.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Captain Morgan is executed for his crimes.
    • Kuro doesn't survive his battle against the Straw Hats.
    • Unlike canon, Krieg explicitly dies from his fight against Luffy.
    • Nezumi and his underlings are killed by Luffy for hurting Nami's sister.
    • Arlong is beaten to near death, then is impaled by a staff Luffy fought him with.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Defied at the last moment when Buggy almost orders his men to fire his Buggy Balls at the Straw Hats before stopping himself upon realizing his own ship would get caught in the blast.
  • Double Take: When Luffy asks Nami whether she wants to loot Buggy's ship while he and the rest deal with the actual crew in Orange Town, Nami laments they moved all the loot. Luffy nods, then blinks in surprise and asks when did she managed to check.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Luffy has a tendency to insist simple solutions to complicated problems are best, which is usually right.
    • Nami tries to ask an Armor-Piercing Question of what Luffy would do if facing a far stronger opponent who was keeping him from his dream. Luffy's response was to get help from his friends, exactly what Nami ends up doing.
    • Luffy gets through to Sanji fairly quickly about joining his crew by telling him to consider what Zeff actually wants. As a result, Sanji listens when Zeff (in his gruff way) tells him to pursue their shared dream.
    • When Nami wants to take the staff that killed Arlong with her, Luffy immediately realizes she wants the support of her mother and insists she doesn't need the staff as "Bell-mere's always been with her."
  • Entertainingly Wrong:
    • When tracking down Zoro in East Blue, Robin believed that Zoro's ability to get lost anywhere is him evading pursuers.
    • Because of the distance between them, Buggy mistakes Luffy's shapeshifted insectoid arm for Armament Haki. Buggy believes himself to be so out of his league that immediately faints from terror.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: After hearing what Arlong did to Nami and her family, even Buggy wants him dead.
  • Guilt by Association Gag: Usopp tries to disclaim any responsibility in his crew mates attacking Fullbody, but Zoro is quick to remind him that as a crew member of a pirate crew, the marines won't care about details like those.
  • Hated by All: Impressively, Nezumi was this before the Marines learn he'd been abusing his position and taking bribes from pirates. Nobody is sympathetic after hearing Luffy killed the man — Smoker even declares that once they catch Luffy, he's buying the pirate a drink.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After being lugged around by the Straw Hats for most of their adventures in the East Blue, Buggy begins to sincerely respect Luffy and think of him as his captain.
  • Inner Thoughts, Outsider Puzzlement: After learning that the straw hat Nami was wearing when they first met belonged to Luffy and he only lent it to her, Sanji falls into despair as he tries to erase his thoughts of Nami in a wedding dress with that straw hat to the confusion of all onlookers.
  • Just Toying with Them: Everybody in the Conomi Islands had this thought with how brutally and decisively Luffy smacked the tar out of Arlong.
  • Like a Son to Me: Zeff explicitly calls Sanji his son, with the latter making a point of leaving the area before he can hear it.
  • Karma Houdini: Fullbody avoids landing in hot water with his superiors over his own screw-ups because of so many other higher ranked marine officers in the East Blue committing serious crimes, though it's clear he's on thin ice.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Arlong is killed by a staff made out of the same cross he left Bell-mere tied to after he shot her.
  • Meaningful Echo: Twice, Nami asks Luffy to "do her a solid." The first time, she's flirtatiously asking for him to fight Buggy so she can steal his map. The second time, she gives a heartfelt plea that he stop Arlong.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Brook is able to feel it when Buggy makes a head joke that is similar in style to his bone jokes.
  • Mundane Utility: Luffy's vest was made with silk he created as a spider, though he needed Makino to sew it for him.
  • Parental Substitute: When Sanji makes a point of leaving before Zeff can call him his son, he thinks of the old chef as his dad.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Because Crocodile sends Robin instead of Mr. 7 to recruit Zoro into Baroque Works, she ends up bonding with the Straw Hats early.
    • Buggy's presence in the Syrup Village arc allows him to identify Klahadore as Kuro, and from there, the plot of the arc is derailed completely as Kuro is defeated early and his crew is defeated off the main island.
  • Real After All: As Robin was trying to recruit him during his imprisonment by Morgan, Zoro is shocked to discover that the talking hand was real and not a starvation-induced hallucination.
  • Required Secondary Powers: Devil Fruits have a secondary effect of keeping their users from developing body dysphoria, though how it manifests varies. This is first seen where Alvida's Slip-Slip Fruit causes her to believe she was always an Amazonian Beauty rather than realize she now weighs about a tenth as much as she did mere minutes ago.
  • Shapeshifter Mode Lock: Initially, Luffy couldn't change back into a human due to not knowing enough anatomy about humans, forcing him to study.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Buggy's head being carried around by the Straw Hats and often hanging on Luffy's waist is explicitly a reference to the character Mimir from God of War (PS4).
    • Buggy is maidenless.
    • When Arlong drops his sword while fighting Luffy, the latter kicks it back to him and tells him to "Pick. It. Up."
  • Springtime for Hitler: Nami tries to lose her position as first mate to Zoro a drinking contest, only to find out the hard way that she has a much higher alcohol tolerance than he does.
  • Title by Number: Each chapter contains its corresponding number in its title.
  • Token Good Teammate: Hatchan is referred to as the only good person among Arlong's crew, with Nami eventually realizing he was just too dim and innocent to realize she was a slave rather than an actual comrade.
  • Trauma Button:
    • Luffy's smile ends up being one for Nami for a time, due to causing her to remember Bell-mere's smile just before she was fatally shot.
    • Buggy's former crew accidentally trigger him when they try to execute Luffy on the same platform Roger died on, making Buggy fear he's going to witness two captains die in that town.
    • More comedically, Luffy hits another of Buggy's by transforming into Garp to sneak through Logue Town. Buggy's terrified sobbing convinces the crew that he wasn't lying about having sailed on Gold Roger's ship.
  • Undignified Death: Arlong starts off arrogant and certain of victory. By the end of his fight with Luffy, he's hiding inside Nami's old room and praying Luffy doesn't find him. Luffy kills him by beating him against the entirety of the room to destroy the place, then to ensure he's not getting back up, impaled him with the staff.
  • Unexpected Virgin: After Nami has sex with Luffy, Nojiko talks about possibly having sex with him herself to Nami and Robin. To the surprise of both younger women, Robin is actually a virgin despite being a decade older than them.
