Phantom Thieves of Hearts

    Makoto "Queen" Niijima

Makoto "Queen" Niijima

The main POV character of the fic. She is the Student Council President of Shujin Academy, as well as the younger sister of public prosecutor Sae Niijima.

  • Adaptational Sexuality: In canon, there's a bit of Ship Tease between her and Ren, but here, she's not at all interested in him.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: As in canon, Makoto shows Eiko the harsh truth about Tsukasa and slaps her in the face when she still doesn't get it. Makoto says she can live with Eiko ending their friendship as long as Eiko is freed from Tsukasa's clutches.
  • Forgiveness: A key character trait for Makoto. She's willing to offer forgiveness to anyone who asks for it as long as they haven't done anything too terrible.
  • Friendly Address Privileges: Haru is the only person who gets to call Makoto "Mako-chan." Makoto is annoyed when Ryuji calls her that, and is disgusted when Tsukasa does so.

    Haru "Noir" Okumura

Haru "Noir" Okumura"

The other main protagonist of the fic. She is the daughter of the CEO of Okumura Foods

  • Adaptational Sexuality: In canon, she's strongly interested in Joker, and takes his rejection the hardest. In this fic, she's a lesbian who's in love with Makoto.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: She suffers from this problem when it comes to her father, as years of being shown that her input isn't valued have caused her to see that speaking her mind is pointless.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: As compassionate as Haru is, she can't stand Sugimura.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Haru has poor self-esteem, and doesn't think very highly of herself. It only gets worse after her father dies and she's thrust into a responsibility that she's completely unprepared for.
  • Parting-Words Regret: She regrets that her last words were to Father were asking him to make things right.

    Ren "Joker" Amamiya

Ren "Joker" Amamiya"

The leader of the Phantom Thieves, a transfer student who attends Shujin Academy while on probation.
  • Demoted to Extra: He was the main character in canon, but he's a supporting player here.
  • Nerves of Steel: He's the only Phantom Thief who doesn't feel at all intimidated when the police question him in October, having been subject to questioning during the incident that got him put on probation.
  • Nice Guy: He's a kind person who's always willing to help others.
  • Parents as People: His parents don't think much of his trying to "play hero," with the woman he tried to save and seem to consider him an embarrassment to the family. That said, they're significantly kinder to their child than many of the other parents in the story.
  • Supporting Leader: He's leader of the Phantom Thieves, but no longer the main character.

    Yusuke "Fox" Kitagawa

Yusuke "Fox" Kitagawa

An aspiring artist who attends Kosei High School and once studied under Madarame.
  • Commonality Connection: He bonds with Haru over their similar experiences- namely, being exploited by a parental figure.

    Futaba "Oracle" Sakura

Futaba "Oracle" Sakura

Sojiro Sakura's adopted daughter and the genius hacker known as Alibaba, as well as the original Medjed.
  • Don't Call Me "Sir": She tells Haru that "Sakura-san" is her father and it's fine to use her first name, thus ending up as the first one to get onto a First-Name Basis with Haru.

    Goro "Crow" Akechi

Goro "Crow" Akechi

Known as the second coming of the Detective Prince, he investigates the Phantom Thieves. He later infiltrates the group while planning to use them for his own ends, but ends up developing a complicated relationship with them.
  • Always Someone Better: Makoto finds him hard to deal with due to Akechi being one of the few people she knows who's consistently smarter than she is.
  • Easily Forgiven: Averted. Haru feels rather conflicted about his death, and feels more sympathy for him than she did when she found out about his betrayal, but has not forgiven him for killing her father.

Palace Rulers

    Kunikazu Okumura

Kunikazu Okumura

Haru's father, the CEO of Okumura Foods and an aspiring politician.

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: In-Universe, characters are unsure whether he was a formerly good person who became corrupted by his ambitions, or whether he was always a bad person.
  • Even Evil Can Be Loved: Despite everything he's done, Haru still feels a certain amount of love for her father, and hopes that he can atone for his crimes.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Subverted. Haru wants to believe that even after everything he's done, from treating his workers horribly to arranging a marriage between her and Sugimura, that he wouldn't be behind the mental shutdowns. It turns out that while he wasn't the one who caused them, he did request them.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Ryuji comments that Kunikazu resenting his father's generosity because he didn't get the model he wanted is a poor excuse for being a greedy Corrupt Corporate Executive.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Played with. Haru wonders if he indeed has no redeeming features, and was always selfish.
  • Parental Hypocrisy: He chose to Marry for Love, but forces his daughter into an abusive Arranged Marriage.
  • Pet the Dog: He allows Haru to take in Morgana for a few days under the assumption that Morgana is a lost cat.

    Sae Niijima

Sae Niijima

Makoto's older sister and legal guardian, as well as a public prosecutor obsessed with capturing the Phantom Thieves.

  • Aloof Big Sister: In Act I, relations between the sister are rather strained, so on the rare occasions when Sae is home, they barely talk.
  • Married to the Job: Sae is primarily focused on her career and has no interest in romance whatsoever.
  • Tough Love: Makoto believes that Sae is hard on her in order to prepare her for the harsh reality of adulthood.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Makoto's flashback in "Dress Code" portrays Sae as idealistic and close to her father. Makoto even wonders if Sae once wanted t be a police officer.

    Takuto Maruki

Takuto Maruki

A part-time counselor at Shujin Academy. Unbeknownst to the Phantom Thieves, he is ruler of a Palace in Odaiba.

  • Shipper on Deck: After Haru confesses to having a crush on another girl, Maruki realizes that she's talking about Makoto, and expresses his well wishes for the two.

Mementos Targets

    Minoru Hatagai, aka "Tsukasa"

Minoru Hatagai, aka "Tsukasa"

A sleazy promoter in Shinjuku who tries to con girls. His Shadow takes the form of the demon Anzu.

  • Adaptational Karma: In this fic, he undergoes a change of heart and gets arrested.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: A manipulative host who takes advantage of the girls' feelings for them to get them sold to the sex trade. It's also revealed that the persona he showed around Eiko was an act that was tailored to her in order to win her over.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: He no longer remembers the names of his targets, which ends up being his undoing when Makoto pretends to be Eiko in her text to him.
  • Freudian Excuse: His mother got conned out of a lot of money and, according to him, never realized his father was cheating on her. As a result of this, he considers.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Makoto realizes that the above Freudian Excuse doesn't even remotely justify Tsukasa's actions; it just meanst that he became at least as bad as his father and the one who scammed his mother.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: He considers women to be rather stupid and has no shame in manipulating them for his own gain.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He won't hesitate to harm any girls who cross him.

    Mitsuyo Togo

Mitsuyo Togo

Hifumi's mother.

  • Foil: To Kunikazu Okumura. Mitsuyo seeks to have Hifumi become an idol so she can live vicariously through her, while Kunikazu seeks to marry Haru off so he can realize his own goal of becoming a politician. Ironically, Mitsuyo is able to fight the Phantom Thieves by herself, while Kunikazu relies on his minions.
  • Stage Mom: Like in canon, she seeks to use her daughter to achieve what she couldn't herself. This reminds Haru of her father.
  • Tragic Dream: Her Freudian Excuse is being unable to achieve her goals of stardom in her youth.
  • Villains Never Lie: Discussed. Haru suspects that Mitsuyo's Shadow might have been lying about fixing the matches, but Ren recalls that Oyamada's Shadow had revealed a truth that his true self would not want exposed- that Miwa, whom Oyamada had falsely claimed had died, was actually still alive.

    Yuuki Mishima

A classmate of Ren and Ann's who runs the Phan-Site. His growing ego causes Ren to stage an intervention in Mementos.

  • The Atoner: His running the Phan-Site was initially his way of atoning for following Kamoshida's orders, but he ended up being corrupted by his desire for attention.
  • The Unfought: Ren tells the other Phantom Thieves to bring their gear and be prepared for a fight, but ends up bringing about a change of heart through talking to Mishima's Shadow.

Other Characters

    Sugimura

Sugimura

Haru's fiance, the son of an influential Diet member.

  • Domestic Abuser: In addition to getting rather rough with Haru during his introductory scene, Haru mentions that he, like many real life abusers, also treats her affectionately at times and tries to gaslight her into thinking that she's the one at fault.
  • Hate Sink: He's a completely despicable individual with no apparent redeeming qualities.
  • Jerkass at Your Discretion: He's on his best behavior around Kunikazu and the other high-ranking executives of Okumura Foods, although judging by Kunikazu's cognition of Sugimura, his future father-in-law isn't fooled.
  • The Unfought: Ryuji proposes enacting a change of heart against him, but Haru decides not to, saying that she doesn't know of him committing any crimes besides abusing her(unlike her father, who is guilty of exploiting his workers and ordering mental shutdowns), and that his change of heart wouldn't have much impact on other people.

    Eiko Takao

Eiko Takao

A third-year at Shujin whom Makoto ends up befriending. In the fic, she also befriends Haru.

  • Ascended Extra: She's promoted from a minor Confidant-exclusive character in canon to a recurring character in the fic.
  • Curse Cut Short: Her calling Makoto a "greedy bitch" is cut short when Makoto slaps her.
  • Jerkass Realization: She realizes that she was unfair to Makoto, who was trying to help her see the truth about Tsukasa, and apologizes to her the next time they see each other.

    Chiyuri Shigaraki

A third-year who has a grudge against Kunikazu Okumura for causing her father's death, and by extension, against Haru.

  • Easily Forgiven: Downplayed. Haru is compassionate enough to accept Shigaraki's apology, but still feels hurt by what she wrote.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Makoto sympathizes with Shigaraki's grief over the loss of her father, and even understands why she might blame Kunikazu, but doesn't condone her taking it out on Haru.
