The Twilight Realm exists parallel to the World of Trophies, and is home to those who were denied access to the other world by the Creator. Many of these characters exist as "Assist Trophies," Trophies who are only permitted entrance to the World of Trophies for a brief time after being summoned by a "prime" Trophy; a few others, however, have found ways of finding their way outside the Twilight Realm and manipulated key events in the series.

The Queen of the Twilight Realm

Midna

"Perhaps it's time for me to play the role of Cupid. Because frankly...I'm done waiting."
Voiced by: SinNyxVI

A mysterious being who rules over the Twilight Realm. When the lesser trophies arrived in the Twilight Realm, she took it upon herself to organize and reign in them from their hysteria. From there, they all declared her to be the Queen.

  • Adaptational Villainy: Compared to her playfully mischievous nature in Twilight Princess, Midna is outright malicious here. At one point she nearly kills Zelda, and would have succeeded had the mental link between them not been severed.
  • The Chessmaster: Midna knows everything about Brawl from her place in the Twilight Realm, and is manipulating everyone in both realms for her own intentions.
  • Deadpan Snarker
  • Demonic Possession: Like most dwellers of the Twilight Realm, she can do this. In Episode 19, we see her use it in action by taking control over Sheik's body while the latter was traveling to Saffron City.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She first appears briefly in Episode 11, where she takes Link and Ike from the Negative Zone, and drops them off at the Bridge of Eldin. Even when she makes her presence known to the viewer, it's still not entirely clear what she wants yet.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Appears to be using Zelda as an Unwitting Pawn for her own twisted reasons...but it's not exactly clear what those reasons are yet.
  • The High Queen: Of the Twilight Realm.
  • Matchmaker Quest: Wants Bowser and Peach to get together for unknown reasons.
  • The Omniscient: Like Ridley, she knows a great deal about Bowser and Peach's past despite not being present for those events.
  • Telepathy: One of her abilities, which she uses to communicate with Zelda and Link.
  • Villainous Crush: Has one on Roy of all people. He doesn't reciprocate it, nor was he even aware of her feelings for him.
  • Voices Are Mental: When Midna's soul possesses Zelda, the viewer can hear the former's voice coming out of the latter's body. When she approaches Peach, Meta Knight, Falco, and Pit, Midna speaks in the same soft tone that Zelda does in order to disguise the fact that she is possessing her body. While she manages to convince Peach, Falco, and Pit, Meta Knight seems more wary of the possessed Zelda.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifter: Midna shows the ability to shift between her normal appearance, and her imp form seen in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Before this, she was merely a retexture of Zelda.

    Mewtwo

Mewtwo

"In time, Bowser, we shall have the world that we desire."
Click here to see him as Lucario
Voiced by: RitzRaptor

Bowser's mentor in Melee, and the third member of Ganondorf's team in Brawl. Though he was killed by Ganon during the final days of Melee, his soul returned to Brawl and possessed Lucario. He joined Ganondorf's team in order to exact his revenge on Bowser, but found himself unable to. Once he reconciled with his student, he was forced to vacate Lucario's body and arrived in the Twilight Realm.

  • Back from the Dead: An interesting case. At first, he appears to have been reincarnated as Lucario. In Episode 17, it turns out his soul had merely been possessing Lucario's body. Then in Episode 18, it turns out he really is alive, his soul residing in the Twilight Realm. In the Fourth World, he even reunites with Lucario and jokes about the aforementioned possession.
  • The Chosen One: The third (and weakest) member of the Creator's Triune, three trophies who were selected to oppose and be competition to the society of trophies, who were given attributes to evolve faster than the other trophies in order to help them grow as fighters as well. He's not quite as strong as Bowser and Ganon, but he finds a way to train himself to go past his natural limits in Racconto and beats Fox, earning his respect. Him being the weakest of the Triune is also likely why he does not have his own Ascent Mode as well.
  • Cuteness Proximity: When he arrives at Queen Midna's Castle in the Twilight Realm, he has this reaction when he sees Bowser Jr., remarking that he looks like a mini-Bowser.
  • Demonic Possession: It's revealed in Episode 17 that Mewtwo is merely using Lucario as a host to control in the world of Brawl. Doesn't stop the real Lucario from fighting off control, however.
  • Evil Sounds Raspy: Plays this trope straight when he’s inhabiting Lucario’s body, where he speaks with a coarse, rough voice. While he's in control of Lucario, he is driven by revenge, wanting to kill Bowser and willingly joins Ganondorf's team in order to do so. Averted once he’s returned to his normal form as Mewtwo however, along becoming one of Bowser's allies as well.
  • Foil: Mewtwo's relationship with Bowser is quite similar to Mario's. Both of them became close friends with Bowser during the events of Raccanto, and were deeply hurt by Bowser's supposed betrayal of their trust in the final days of Melee. Upon being reincarnated in the world of Brawl, both characters swear to enact their revenge on Bowser for the wrongs he'd inflicted on him, going to extreme lengths in order to do so. However, upon learning the truth about what happened in Melee all those years ago, Mewtwo eventually forgives his old friend and defects from Ganondorf's side in order to help him once again. Mario on the other hand remains bitter to Bowser's actions, and sees defeating him in the tournament semifinals as catharsis for all the pain he's been through.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: He starts off working with Ganondorf, then begins to warm up to Bowser and wants to help better his life. After he's murdered by Ganondorf, he possesses Lucario in Brawl and seeks revenge on Bowser, whom he blames for his death. Mewtwo, now known as Lucario, then returns to Ganon's side, only to betray him again and help Bowser, and then returns to Bowser's side for good when he learns the truth.
  • Not So Above It All:
    • Mewtwo, while possessing Lucario's body, finds his new furry body to be comfortable and beautiful. Once he's expelled, one of Mewtwo's first concerns is that he doesn't have fur anymore.
    • During his meeting with Bowser Jr. and Waluigi, he notes how similar the two are to Bowser and Wario. He also can't help but find the Koopa prince to be cute. He even takes the time to help Bowser Jr. to bed, promising to tell Jr. about his father despite the fact that Mewtwo has more pressing matters to address at the time.
Mewtwo: I have so much to do, but...perhaps a small detour wouldn't hurt.
  • Power Trio: A member of the Creator's Triune in Melee, and the weakest of the three.
  • Pretty in Mink: A rare male example. In the Christmas special, Mewtwo retorts to a curious Link that he doesn't need anything for Christmas, as he already has a wonderful fur coat. Upon being returned to his original body in Episode 18, Mewtwo seems less upset about being lost in a new dimension, and more at the fact that he doesn't have fur anymore.
  • Psychic Powers: Being a Psychic-type Pokemon, Mewtwo can read minds. Losing this ability is a disadvantage to him possessing Lucario's body, forcing him to rely on reading their auras instead, which is far less inaccurate as proven by how poorly it assesses Bowser despite his kinder disposition.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: He was killed by Ganondorf in Melee for betraying him in favor of helping Bowser improve his life. As Lucario, he is hunted down by a R.O.B squad, but manages to escape to Wuhu Island's beach, where he is discovered and nursed back to health by Mario.
  • Stern Teacher: Before beginning Bowser's training, Mewtwo warns Bowser that he will have to submit to exceedingly brutal challenges in order to become a better fighter. Bowser of course, obliges. Even as he continued to grow closer to Bowser as a friend, Mewtwo doesn't let up on his training one bit.
  • That Man Is Dead: When Bowser first recognizes that he is Mewtwo instead of Lucario.
"Don't you ever call me that again. Mewtwo is dead, I am Lucario!"
    • Ultimately subverted once the real Lucario forces Mewtwo out of his body, resulting in Mewtwo being sent to the Twilight Realm.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He eventually trained himself to the point that he actually beat Fox, the top Tier Smasher of Melee.
  • Training from Hell: Mewtwo's training of Bowser to become one of the best fighters in the world is stated to have been very long and arduous for Bowser. Not that he minds.
  • Voices Are Mental: Zig-zagged. In his normal body during Melee and inside the Twilight Realm, Mewtwo speaks with a smooth and relaxed baritone voice. When Mewtwo's soul possesses Lucario, Mewtwo speaks with a rougher and coarser tone, though with some similarities to his original voice. After Mewtwo is forced out of Lucario's body, Lucario's true voice makes itself known, which is different from the raspy tone heard when Mewtwo is possessing him. In Episode 20, Liz notes that she noticed the differences when Mewtwo was in control of Lucario compared to real Lucario's voice.
  • Vocal Evolution: Mewtwo's voice becomes significantly raspier and coarse when he takes control of Lucario's body, emphasizing his Anti-Villain status. As the series went on, Mewtwo-as-Lucario's voice smoothened out, where his voice goes from rough and raspy to more medium tone. This is demonstrated best when comparing Mewtwo-as-Lucario's performance in Episode 6 and Episode 17. When Mewtwo returns to his original body in the Twilight Realm however, he regains his original smooth baritone.
  • Walking Spoiler: Mewtwo's character is the catalyst for a good chunk of the plot, from his motivations, role as Bowser's mentor, and his conception as Lucario. He originally shared many of his tropes with Lucario until it was confirmed they were two separate characters.
  • You Have Failed Me: While in control of Lucario, Ganondorf ordered a squadron of R.O.Bs to terminate him.

"His fighting sense isn't the only thing that's changed. He's become cold and callous."
Voiced by: Sight360x

Mario and Bowser's teammate in Melee. It's heavily implied he was killed by Ganon's minions during the last day of Melee, but is later revealed to be alive within the Twilight Realm.

  • Back from the Dead: It's revealed in Episode 18 that he's trapped in the Twilight Realm alongside Shadow, Midna, and now Mewtwo.
  • Fiery Redhead: Inverted: he's really calm and acts as a mediator between Bowser and Mario. The "fiery" part is more literal given his various flame-based attacks.
  • Killed Off for Real: Heavily implied to have happened during the last day of Melee. Ultimately however, he's revealed to have returned in Brawl, although he's stuck in the Twilight Realm alongside the lesser trophies like Midna and Shadow the Hedgehog.
  • It May Help You on Your Quest: Roy gives Mario a sticker in Episode 12 that gives him the ability to use his various powerups from both Super Mario Galaxy games.
  • Nice Guy: Compared to Mario, he treats Bowser with a good amount of respect.
  • Oblivious to Love: If Shadow's words mean anything, Roy couldn't tell Midna had feelings for him.
  • Playing with Fire: His sword can create small explosions.

    Shadow The Hedgehog

Shadow

"Hmph. I already told you, I'm not funny."
Voiced by: Shadowlink4321

A hedgehog with a mysterious past. He finds allies in Roy and Midna, trying to escape with the former.

  • Battle Aura: In some of his attacks.
  • Casting a Shadow: Puns aside, many of his attacks are darkness based.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Chaos Control. He instructs Sonic to invoke this trope in order to get to Norfair. We have yet to see Shadow himself do this however.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Quite capable of cracking dry jokes, but will deny being funny whenever someone calls him out on it.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He first appears in Episode 14, giving Sonic a sticker that allows him to pull off Chaos Control. His character and role doesn't get explored until Episode 19.
  • Fantastic Racism: Doesn't take kindly to the fact that the Creator's resources went into making more Yoshis and Pokemon as opposed to making him a bonafide trophy.
  • The Power of Acting: Shadow gets so caught up in his expository speech to Mewtwo that he begins portraying the anger of the other Twilight Realm trophies a little too well. Roy lampshades it.
  • Power Palms: He is able to shoot Chaos spears from his palms.
