The Protectors of Nightopia

     NiGHTS
The titular protagonist, although not the one the story entirely focuses on the development of. A mischievous and fun-loving, bold jester creature that doesn't hesitate to help the kids recover their lost Ideyas, for reasons that none of the kids are aware of until much later.
  • Adaptational Gender Identity: NiGHTS in this story is a demigirl that interchangeably uses she/her and they/them.
  • Badass in Distress: Like in their parent franchise, Wizeman's Co-Dragons kidnap them a lot. But it happens much less than before.
  • Flight: NiGHTS' main and most iconic power. The narration and summary compare the ease NiGHTS has with flying with the ease a fish has to swim underwater.
  • Heel–Face Turn: NiGHTS did one a long time ago, going from one of Wizeman's Co-Dragons to the main force opposing him.
  • Redemption Equals Affliction: Elaborated a bit more on this story than in her origin games. NiGHTS might've gained freedom from having to do crimes for a Bad Boss/implied Abusive Parent, a better Parental Substitute/friend, and a better life purpose, but she also always trade blows with her brothers, who refuse to accept the Heel–Face Turn is permanent and want her to go back to Nightmare.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Downplayed, but they and Owl can bicker a bit due to their contrasting philosophies and personalities, which doesn't affect their ability to cooperate to help the dreamers.
     Owl
NiGHTS' most trusted companion, even if it's not made completely clear by some of their interactions. A talking, wise owl that guides the dreamers through the Night Dimension with information and encouragement.
  • Butt-Monkey: Still has traces of this by sometimes tanking punishment, but it's much less frequent in this story.
  • The Lancer: To NiGHTS, balancing their Rebellious Spirit and The Trickster attitudes by being a wise, grandfatherly mentor to the dreamers.
  • Team Dad: The most fatherly (or grandfatherly) member of the team, offering guidance, wisdom and comfort to the dreamers.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Downplayed, but he and NiGHTS can bicker a bit due to their contrasting philosophies and personalities, which doesn't affect their ability to cooperate to help the dreamers.
     Coraline Jones
One of the six dreamers that NiGHTS and Owl aid with recovering their lost Ideyas. The girl that put an end to the reign of terror of the Other Mother and freed three children's souls, born from Michigan, currently living in Ashland in the Pink Palace. Although the threat of losing her eyes is over, she stopped taking magic as well as before.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: While neither the original book nor the Laika movie implies Coraline finds the Other World adventure more than scary and dangerous and a life lesson on how to appreciate the real world in spite of its flaws, here it left its scar on her. Namely, in a nutshell, she developed bigotry towards magic beings because she believes all of them will be manipulative backstabbers like the Other Mother.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Her hair is naturally brown, but she dyes it blue.
     Skid and Pump
Two of the six dreamers that NiGHTS and Owl aid with recovering their lost Ideyas. Two best friends who, together, spread fun and spooky chaos in their town by celebrating Halloween, even if they happen to do it on the wrong date most of the time. While they refuse to face the pain of both of their families being fractured down to the base.
  • Dysfunctional Family: The source of their nightmares and Ideya loss. Skid's dad is nowhere to be seen (and as seen in Spooky Month, any pictures featuring him have his face ripped), and Pump's parents are either too busy to properly stay at home at best, or purposefully neglectful at worst.
  • Occult Blue Eyes: Pump's eyes, just like in Spooky Month, gain a cyan blue hue whenever he's close to supernatural stuff. Which in this fic means that they're nearly 24/7 in this state.
     Dipper and Mabel Pines
Two of the six dreamers that NiGHTS and Owl aid with recovering their lost Ideyas. A brother and a sister who, together, had an unbelievable summer in the weird Oregon town of Gravity Falls. They grew there during their stay and left the place to face the future with the vow of one day coming back. But soon, they'll admit to themselves they are still damaged by some realizations about themselves.
  • Adaptational Karma: More internal than external, but Mabel is seriously regretful of her behavior during the summer.
     Frisk Dreemurr
One of the six dreamers that NiGHTS and Owl aid with recovering their lost Ideyas. A determined child that helped free the Monsters living under Mt. Ebott, and became their ambassador. Even if they helped free a whole civilization from unfair punishment from the past... they know very well, they didn't save all the prisoners from Mt. Ebott.
  • Samaritan Syndrome: The cause of Frisk's nightmares is because she was unable to save Chara and Asriel and give them back the lives they used to have.

The Nightmaren Army

     Reala
One of Wizeman's enforcers, working to stop the guardians of Nightopia from interfering in Wizeman's plans. A first-level Nightmaren clad in red and black, eerily similar to NiGHTS in appearance, but opposing her free, playful kindness with steel cold cruelty, and near-to-blind loyalty to Wizeman.
     Jackle
One of Wizeman's enforcers, working to stop the guardians of Nightopia from interfering in Wizeman's plans. A second-level Nightmaren (and possibly failed first-level) with an invisible body but a long cloak to protect him. And backed by insane, but cheeky sadism aimed at the dreamers he torments.
     The Second-level Nightmarens
Wizeman's second-to-best creations in the ranking. They are keeping the dreamer's Ideyas to be taken to Wizeman, and they must be beaten before it can happen. In General
  • Morality Kitchen Sink: They all collectively are equal parts evil (with one of them being Faux Affably Evil), genuinely affable to the point of either being cheerful or pitiable, Graceful Losers, and animalistic/one-minded.
  • Monster of the Week: They just appear in the chapters named after them, and have to be defeated so the kid's Ideyas can be recovered.
  • Original Generation: They are original creations for this fic. Although they subtly reflect the struggles the dreamers they face-off had faced before.
Coraline's Nightmarens (Klinge, Couper, Baba Yaga)
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: Klinge is a mantis, Couper is a wasp.
  • Baba Yaga: Baba Yaga is directly based on the Slavic witch. Only, the chicken-legged house is now the lower half of her body, and from the upper half, she looks like a button-eyed doll.
Skid and Pump's Nightmarens (Faux, Skeleton Couple, Treetop)
  • Affably Evil: Mr. Bones and Ms. Femur behave like a sweet married couple to each other and to their foes.
  • Monster Mash: The Skeleton Couple are... skeletons, and Treetop is a tree-shaped Botanical Abomination. Faux lightly fits the motif as well, being based on The Grim Reaper.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Faux hands over Skid and Pump's Ideyas of Purity after being defeated not out of honor or even faith in the boys, but because he believes that Wizeman will win, and he wants to amuse the heroes with a temporary victory.
Now... I don't like to consider myself a nightmare of honor. I just am an accepting loser; I don't have faith in your causes. Wizeman will still have them by the end of your struggle, but I will amuse you all with a temporary victory... After all, hope can be the most terrifying thing.
Dipper and Mabel's Nightmarens (Caiman, Kunzite, Hexal)
  • Affably Evil: Kunzite is nice, competitive but honest, and a Graceful Loser.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Hexal sounds cheerful, but is definitely not nice.
  • Expy: Hexal is the Expy of the biggest threat the twins faced in Gravity Falls, Bill Cipher. Like him, he's based on a colorful geometrical shape (green hexagon instead of a yellow triangle), with a single part of the face as the face (mouth instead of the eye), a staff, and a fancy hat (a fedora instead of a tophat), along with being a falsely affable, cheerful demon that invades humanity's dreams (only much less powerful than Bill). Unlike him, though, he has a full humanoid body that looks like it's made out of origami.
    • Expy Coexistence: Interestingly, Bill Cipher still exists, even if just as a temporary form taken by the beginning Nightmarens, and mentioned in passing. This makes Hexal a Nightmaren intentionally crafted to remind the twins of the dream demon.
  • Never Smile at a Crocodile: Caiman, being a giant, savage and dangerous alligator Nightmaren, embodies this trope.
Frisk's Nightmarens (Crescendo, Aquamarine, Fairbairn & Rose)
  • Fisher King: Crescendo's arena is a dusty room, representing how they feel abandoned and are seeking someone to listen to their music. Once Frisk sings along to their tune, and they realize their wish has been granted, some of the dust disappears, as if they were a toy finally found and played with again.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: All of them are just keeping Frisk's Ideyas because of Wizeman's orders. As soon as Frisk reaches out to them, they give them back.
  • Tragic Villain: A trio/quartet of them. Crescendo wanted someone to appreciate their music, Aquamarine feels hopeless about her own chances of being a competent Nightmaren, and Fairbairn & Rose suffered gaslighting and the effects of a curse.
     Wizeman the Wicked
The God of Nightmares. He wants to use the Ideyas of any unfortunate dreamers, including the ones of the younger protagonists, to fulfill his twisted plans, and it's up to the heroes to stop him before he destroys Nightopia.
