    The Ultimate Heroes for Hire

In General

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/uhfh.JPG
Background: Vanessa. Foreground, left to right: Captain Falcon, Cassandra, Yoshi, Pichu, Sonic, Pickle
A group of heroes whose mission is to keep the world at peace, fighting against the Board of Evil whenever they can. Most of the time, however, they're engaging in some form of wacky misadventure.
  • Cool Airship: The Pennywhacker, which is just the Halberd with a cheesier name. Many characters call out Captain Falcon for this decision.
  • Fun with Acronyms: Often go by UHFH.
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: The entire group is like this. Captain Falcon and Pickle are consistent wise guys, Vanessa and Cassandra routinely play the role of the straight men (or rather, straight women), and the rest of the group fall somewhere in the middle.
  • Un-person: Whoever Colin was, nobody is allowed to ask.
    Cassandra: Wait, who's Colin?
Yoshi: [ominously] We don't talk about Colin.
Sonic: Yeah, so don't ask questions you don't want to know the answer to. Trust me, you don't want to know the answer.

Pichu

Voiced by: AmaletzTheShark
First appearance: Episode 1: Back In Action
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pichunew.png
The Hero of the story. Following the Melee tournaments, Pichu was one of a select few fighters who were rejected from participating in the Brawl tournaments. Having spent every day since then in training, Pichu's newfound strength allowed to make a triumphant return to the tournament scene and become champion. Immediately afterward, he is inducted into the Ultimate Heroes for Hire.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Pikachu treats him like one.
  • Badass Adorable: Pichu's cute appearance is a mask that hides his unrivaled skills to beat (Almost) any opponent he faces. Invoked by Pichu himself.
Pichu: Not my fault I'm badass and adorable at the same time.
  • Chick Magnet: Becomes one of these after becoming champion.
  • Create Your Own Villain: His victory over Bayonetta in his debut exhibition match leads to the Umbra Witch swearing vengeance on him.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Always has a witty comment ready for any situation
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: Despite his new strength, Pichu has yet to learn how to properly control it. Thus, he tires out fairly quickly once he's pushed to his limits.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Pichu has gone through this three different times with three different people: Mewtwo, Pikachu, and Wave
  • From Zero to Hero: When Pichu debuts in his first tournament since Melee, he receives little to no applause from the spectators. But after trouncing Bayonetta and eventually winning the tournament, Pichu becomes the new Champion of Light and becomes beloved by (almost) everyone.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: Played for Laughs. After learning that he was rejected from Smash the second time, Pichu admits that it caused him to snap, leading him to join several gangs and resort to crime.
Pichu: Being rejected from Smash twice can really break you. Can't imagine what poor Waluigi is going through right now.
  • One-Hit Kill: While battling some of the Board of Evil's Brawlborgs, he manages to kick one with enough force to knock it into another dimension. This is an homage to Pichu's early days in Ultimate, where his Forward-Tilt was easily his strongest move.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: His real name is Thor, but everyone calls him Pichu. In fact, when his brother Zeus/Pikachu calls him by his real name, Pichu rejects this, reminding his brother about their estrangement. This indicates that only close family refer to them by their real names.
  • Only Sane Man: When he lived with the other rejected Smashers. Once he joins the Ultimate Heroes for Hire, Pichu goes back and forth between joining the hijinks and wondering how the group manages to function the way it does.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Pichu is bitter towards several people who have betrayed him in some form or another, that being Wave, Mewtwo and his brother Zeus (AKA: Pikachu). Notably, his interactions with these characters are some of the few times he is ever serious.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: Became one of these after years of extensive training. By the time he returns to Smash, Pichu is able to go toe-to-toe with top tier fighters.
  • Power Incontinence: Despite all his training, however, Pichu still hasn't quite grasped his full potential. When using a lot of power at once, he quickly tires out.
  • Sibling Rivalry: With Pikachu, his older brother.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Pichu is still viewed as a “joke character” because of his prolonged absence. After defeating Bayonetta in his debut match, though, the general public quickly acknowledges his newfound strength.
  • Suddenly Shouting: He does this after Mario calls everyone back to the World of Light, but Pichu initially refuses due to him inviting the Wii Fit Trainer back to Project 4 instead of him.
Pichu: Oh, yeah, I can see that because YOU PREFER AN ALBINO WOMAN WHO DOESN'T EVEN FIGHT! She exercises! EXERCISES! DOES YOGA! AND YOU CONSIDER THAT GOOD FIGHTING!?
  • Weather Manipulation: When is FS Energy is high enough, Pichu is able to summon thunderstorms at will

Yoshi

Voiced by: AmaletzTheShark
First appearance: Episode 2: Heroes and Villains
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yoshinew.png
One of the Ultimate Heroes for Hire. Yoshi and Pichu had been friends back when the latter was in the Melee tournaments, and time has done nothing to strain their relationship. Yoshi is generally an amicable person, but he does harbor some lingering depression over the death of his former girlfriend, Birdo.
  • Best Friend: He has had this relationship with Pichu ever since the days of Melee.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: While he has his moments of snide comments, Yoshi is arguably the most amicable of the Ultimate Heroes, especially towards Cassandra. But piss him off enough, and you have the dubious honor of meeting his darker half.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Yoshi's life seems content on the surface, but he's dealt with a lot of trauma in the past. To whit, his lover Birdo was mortally wounded in battle, and in a bid to save her Yoshi made a Deal with the Devil. Said deal forced him to kill a lot of innocent people, making him something of a serial killer. And when it seemed like Birdo was safe, she called Yoshi out for his actions and Yoshi killed Birdo in a rage. It's easy to see why he's not keen on talking about his past.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Zig-Zagged. when Yoshi is angry, the Dark Star begins to influence his aggressive thoughts and bring them out, and he becomes less discriminatory about who he attacks. However, Palutena gives Yoshi the idea to willingly use the Dark Star's power whenever he isn't in a state of aggression, that way he can become acclimated to the power while becoming more resistant to the the influence.
  • Deal with the Devil: Made a deal with the Dark Star in order to save Birdo's life. The end result: Birdo died anyway by Yoshi's own hand, no less, and Yoshi was left stuck with the conditions of the initial agreement.
  • Death Seeker: Zig-Zagged. When Yoshi first realizes that the Dark Star has awoken from its dormancy, his first instinct is to throw himself off the edge of the Pennywhacker so that he doesn't bring any harm to his friends. The only thing that stops him from going through with it is hearing Cassandra sing, which immediately calms him down. In the next episode, Yoshi informs Palutena of the Dark Star's return, and begs her to separate them, even if it means he dies as a result (He's convinced he deserves to die anyway). But Palutena convinces him to give himself another chance by reminding Yoshi of his feelings for Cassandra, and that she is Worth Living For. Yoshi is still unsure about this, but decides to give it a try.
  • Demonic Possession: After making his deal with the Dark Star, Yoshi becomes increasingly powerful, but also increasingly aggressive. The Dark Star influences Yoshi to kill innocent people to collect their life force so he can heal Birdo While Yoshi is in control of his actions most of the time, he loses more control the angrier he gets, to the point where the Dark Star will force him to attack his own friends on sight. So far, Cassandra has been the only one who can help him regain control.
  • Enemy Within: Yoshi's relationship with the Dark Star is not a positive one. For one, it influenced him to murder innocent people, including his girlfriend, Birdo. It's also been feeding off of his life force like a parasite, to the point where Yoshi is entirely dependent on the Dark Star being inside him.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: In Yoshi's defense, he wasn't thinking straight, but to make a deal with a being called the ''''Dark'''' Star, he should have known there would be consequences.
  • Expy: The story of how he tried and failed to save Birdo is reminiscent of Anakin Skywalker in Revenge of the Sith. Both heroes were motivated by love, made a Deal with the Devil that turned them to The Dark Side, and failed after they accidentally murdered the lovers they were so desparate to save.
    • Yoshi's relationship with the Dark Star also has a lot of parallels to the Symbiote in Spider-Man 3.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: How Yoshi justifies murdering innocent people to Birdo. While he did it to try and save her life, she refuses to accept his actions as well-intentioned.
  • The Lost Lenore: Birdo is this for him. Yoshi never gets over her death, even when his feelings for Cassandra begin to develop.
  • Love Makes You Evil: Yoshi was motivated by love to save Birdo's life after she was grievously injured in a battle. His mission to save her led to Yoshi making a deal with the Dark Star and killing innocent people in order to heal Birdo's injuries.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In a fit of rage powered by the Dark Star, Yoshi murders Birdo. He immediately reacts with sorrow, and mourns the loss of the love he tried to save.
  • Nice Guy: Yoshi is arguably the friendliest of the Ultimate Heroes, especially towards Cassandra. While he does have his own moments where he makes rude remarks towards someone, it's never unwarranted.
  • Post-Victory Collapse: Does one of these after he defeats Ganondorf in Episode 3.
  • Puppeteer Parasite: During the time it has been in Yoshi's body, the Dark Star has been feeding of of his life force, to the point where of they separate, Yoshi will die.
  • Speed Dating: Is encouraged by his friends to give it a shot. He quickly decides to call it quits when none of the available ladies meet his standards.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Whenever he taps into the Dark Star's power.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gets this reaction from Birdo after confessing to using the Dark Star and killing innocent people to save her.

Cassandra

Voiced by: EuphieOnClouds
First appearance: Episode 3: Princess in No Castle
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cassandra_06.jpg
The princess of a kingdom known as Dragondong. She ran away from home escape an arranged marriage set up by her father. She is relentlessly pursued by Prince Sheldon, who desprately wants Cassandra to return his romantic feelings. When she arrives in the World of Light, she comes across Yoshi, and immediately falls in love with him. The feeling is mutual for Yoshi as well, but neither of them are entirely aware of the others' feelings. Cassandra gets a hint though, as Yoshi seemingly felt jealous when she commented that she wouldn't mind cuddling with Bowser.
  • Action Girl: Cassandra boasts a fierce attitude and an aggressive fighting style.
  • Berserk Button: Don't call her a Damsel in Distress... Just... don't...
    • Also don't make fun of the fact that Charizard isn't a Dragon-type Pokemon. It's less dangerous than the above, but still not recommended.
  • Crush Filter: This happens when Cassandra first sees Yoshi.
  • Everyone Can See It: Literally everyone who sees her and Yoshi together insists they're a couple.
  • Faux Action Girl: Cassandra is afraid of becoming this, to the point where she does not ask for help even when she clearly needs it, and gets annoyed when someone tries to help her. Justified in that nearly every battle she has been in, she has lost, and someone (usually Yoshi) has to come to her rescue. Yoshi deconstructs this and assures her that asking for help has nothing to do with being weak.
  • Fury-Fueled Foolishness: Although she can become very aggressive when provoked, this comes at the cost of becoming reckless with her attacks, to the point where her moves become predictable. Such as in Episode 15, when Cassandra faces off against King K. Rool and he proceeds to taunt her over her previous defeat against him. This aggravates Cassandra and allows K. Rool to counter her attacks with ease. Were it not for Prince Sheldon interfering with the match, K. Rool would most certainly have won.
  • In-Series Nickname: Her friends sometimes call her "Cass" for short.
  • Naïve Newcomer: Despite her desires to become independent and prove that she can take care of herself, she does not have much experience fighting before she arrives in the World of Light. She often uses her Flare Blitz attack seeing as though it is her strongest move. However, her reliance on it ends up making her attacks predictable.
  • Trapped in Another World: Her arrival in the World of Light was purely by accident. However, she has no plans to return home any time soon.
  • Truth in Television: Cassandra's apparent lack of skill in fights matches up with how Charizard is viewed in the actual game (Low tier by themselves, but with Pokemon Trainer is elevated higher)

Captain Falcon

Voiced by: EBNall
First appearance: Episode 1: Back In Action
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/falconnew.png

  • By-the-Book Cop: Of sorts. Samus expresses distrust when Lord Douglas invites the UHFH to parley, which Falcon counters by citing an actual subsection in the Rulebook of Heroes & Villains.
Captain Falcon: [revealing his personal copy of the rulebook] See here? Page 544, Section II, Subsection B.
[Subsection B is focused on, reading, "When one side of two opposing factions invokes 'parley,' it is considered heroic to agree to the parley, even if negotiations are likely not to be met.]
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: To the point where this man is more obsessed with his toast and staring contests than his own privacy or dignity, or than actual important emergency calls.
  • Giver of Lame Names: Pennywhacker, Fists of Justice, UHFH (The F is silent).
  • Good Cop/Bad Cop: Plays the Bad Cop to Samus' Good Cop during an interrogation of Ridley. Falcon gets too excited over it, however, and his poor questions coupled with unintentionally ordering Ridley not to talk gets him nowhere.
  • In-Universe Nickname: Everyone on the team calls him "Cap".
  • The Leader: Though it's debatable how good of one he is.

Sonic

Voiced by: infotroph
First appearance: Episode 2: Heroes and Villains
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ssbu_sonic.png
Sonic is the speedster of the Ultimate Heroes. But he also comes off as a huge jerk to almost everyone around him. He especially hates Pickle, as he is constantly annoyed by his stupidity. Word of God declares a specific reason behind Sonic's toxic attitude, but the series has yet to delve into that.
  • Jerkass: Almost everything that comes out of Sonic's mouth is spoken with a sarcastic and condescending attitude.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Literally. After Sonic makes fun of Vanessa's weight, he is rewarded with a barrage of laser cannons.
  • The Scrappy: Sonic's toxic personality has made him one of the most hated characters in the series

Pickle

Voiced by: AmaletzTheShark
First appearance: Episode 2: Heroes and Villains
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/picklenew.png
Even among the members of the Ultimate Heroes for Hire, Pickle isn't exactly the brightest bulb. He frequently talks in non-sequitirs and comes up with harebrained ideas in situations where they aren't needed. While the team does express some annoyance with Pickle, they still treat with a healthy amount of respect.
  • Breath Weapon: Can spit both fire and poison breath. To everyone's confusion, Pickle is only capable of spitting fire when attacking foes that are behind him.
  • Eyeless Face: Subverted in that he does apparently have eyes. According to him, they’re simply disguised to resemble the rest of his spots so people won’t feel like he’s constantly staring at him.
  • The Fool: Easily the most airheaded member of the crew.
  • Kindhearted Simpleton: What Pickle lacks in intelligence, he makes up for in kindness… the only downside is that, because of the aforementioned lack of intelligence, his attempts at being kind are often misguided.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: Downplayed, since he posesses the abilities of several different Piranha Plant species.
  • Smart Ball: As Sonic discovers, Pickle becomes astonishingly intelligent if he becomes sufficiently dehydrated.

Vanessa

Voiced by: RainbowRoad1234 (formerly), Ziracona
First appearance: Episode 2: Heroes and Villains
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/uufh_vanessa.png

  • Adaptational Heroism: Sort of. Vanessa is a Parasite Queen, which was a monstrous creature experimented upon by Space Pirates prior to being killed by Samus in its home game. Here, Vanessa is the benevolent Mission Control who monitors all activities pertinent to the UHFH.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: While the UHFH are her friends, it’s still rare for them to actually take her advice. At one point, Pichu actually comes back to apologize for ignoring her earlier and admits Vanessa’s “on the half of the team that isn’t stupid.”
  • Mission Control: Vanessa is the one who provides intel for the UHFH prior to every mission. She’s also in control of all the defenses on the Pennywhacker.
  • Remote Body: Has a R.O.B unit which she can hook up to whenever she feels like traveling. It even replicates all of the basic senses, allowing her to experience things as if she were in her natural body.

    The Board of Evil

In General

  • Card-Carrying Villain: Why else would they call themselves the "Board of Evil"?
  • Decided by One Vote: Lord Douglas was elected this way—only because Ganondorf cast his vote for him whereas everyone else voted for themselves. It's eventually revealed that Ganon did vote for himself—the ballot was swapped out by Bowser as part of his duties as The Mole, allowing for Douglas' ascent to power.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: It takes a while for them to actually do something that isn’t related to board meetings. It’s only when Mewtwo is allowed to lead a mission that they finally cause some havoc.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: A lot of their meetings are spent mocking each other, with Bowser and Ridley often taking the brunt of the teasing. At the end of the day, though, they still get along amicably with each other.

Lord Douglas

Voiced by: infotroph
First appearance: Episode 2: Heroes and Villains
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lord_douglas_uhfh_1.JPG
The eccentric leader of the Board of Evil. Lord Douglas assembled all the fighters with villainous reputations to serve an unknown purpose... even to said villains he recruited. His leadership mainly consists of hosting board meetings and, on occasion, harassing the Ultimate Heroes for Hire.
  • Big Bad: Fills this role, given his status as the Board of Evil’s leader. Demoted to Dragon after the introduction of the Dark Spirit.
  • Catchphrase: Some variation of "Uuunnngh!"
  • Evil Counterpart: To Captain Falcon, since both act as The Leader of their respective groups.
  • Hat of Authority: His top hat.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Subverted. While his irises are red, his leadership of the Board of Evil rarely amounts to anything beyond holding meetings.

Ganondorf

Voiced by: EBNall
First appearance: Episode 2: Heroes and Villains
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ganondorfssbu.png
The Great King of Evil and Douglas' right-hand man. Ganondorf is perhaps the only board member who has earned Lord Douglas' genuine respect, and thus he is assigned missions important to the Board of Evil's success.
  • Bad Is Good and Good Is Bad: After Bowser makes fun of Ganondorf for being Douglas's favorite, and even mockingly ships them, Ganondorf responds with "Go to heaven!". And based on the reactions from the other villains, he may as well have dropped an F-Bomb.
  • The Dragon: Serves as this for Lord Douglas. Ganondorf is often assigned the more important missions pertaining to the Board's activities.
  • Harmless Villain: In spite of his fearsome reputation, the Ultimate Heroes for Hire don't view him as any more of a threat than the other Board of Evil members.
    Yoshi: Oh, it's just Ganondorf.
    Ganondorf: It's...Just Ganondorf?!
  • Heir-In-Law: He briefly considers this once he discovers that Cassandra is royalty. When asked if this means he's in love with a Charizard, he counters that there's no romance involved: he just wants a legitimate claim to the throne. Word of God confirms this to be an Aborted Arc, with King K. Rool taking over the role, albeit with a more perverted goal.
Ganondorf: The thought of kissing reptilian lips is enough to make a sane man vomit!
  • Not So Above It All: Despite his posturing of being attempting to be intimidating and the straight man to the whole group, he occasionally takes part in the comedy of the series.
    • He says he has hobbies outside of being the "King of Evil".
    • He tells the whole board that he unironically likes Taylor Swift music, since he thought Mewtwo read his mind and was told everyone...except Mewtwo did no such thing.

Ridley

Voiced by: StopThatGuy (formerly), DragonRider393
First appearance: Episode 2: Heroes and Villains
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ridleynew.png

  • The Atoner: After a lot of time wrestling back and forth with his feelings, he eventually decides that he wants to make amends for his mistakes now that he understands what it was like for all the people he hurt.
  • Being Evil Sucks: After defeating Samus in a battle, Ridley states that fighting her "doesn't have the same thrill that it used to".
  • Betty and Veronica: Ridley expresses romantic interest in Samus, while being completely unaware of Blue's romantic interest in him. During Episode 14, Ridley comes to realize that Blue was the one he loved all along.
  • Delightful Dragon: Becomes this after his Heel–Face Turn
  • The Dreaded: Carried a violent reputation prior to his Heel–Face Turn. It's telling that, when he confronts a crazed killer on the streets, the killer immediately pleads for his life in exchange for allowing Ridley to kill the innocent victim. Ridley murdering the criminal is what solidifies his Heel–Face Turn.
  • Easily Forgiven: Downplayed. When Ridley explains his reasons for wanting to reform, he reveals that Bayonetta was actively trying to kill him during their exhibition match. Being on death's door frightened him, and once he realized this same fear is what all of his victims felt, he had a Heel Realization that changed his whole outlook on life. And while it seems like this is enough for even Samus to forgive him, it's later revealed that she actually hasn't, she's simply testing him to see whether or not he's being honest about all this. The other Ultimate Heroes, however, decide to take his word for it, going so far as to cheer him on when he is losing against Erdrick in the tournament. He has not won the public's favor though, as they still believe he has some ulterior motives.
  • Good Feels Good: After saving Blue from a serial killer and seeing her wholesome reaction (Complete with a Smooch of Victory), Ridley has one of these moments.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Betrays the Board of Evil and joins the Ultimate Heroes.
  • Pet the Dog: Has two of these moments, one of them is a literal example, in which he claims he saw a puppy in the park and wanted to pet it. The second one comes when he saves Blue from a murderer, which becomes the moment he decides to fully commit to his Heel–Face Turn.
  • The Power of Friendship: When Ridley sees that Blue and the Ultimate Heroes (minus Samus) are rooting for him in his battle with Erdrick, it gives him the morale he needs to make a comeback.
  • Sixth Ranger: After Samus accepts Ridley's desire to reform, Captain Falcon makes him an official member of the Ultimate Heroes.
  • Toon Transformation: Ridley takes a potion that he believes will turn him into a human. it turns him into a Yoshi instead.
  • Villains Out Shopping: Hangs out at Wario's Tavern with Bowser quite often, and he even gives an impromptu poetry session there once he masters it. Ridley gets along favorably with the heroes when they come to the restaurant, deeming it "neutral ground."
  • Wicked Cultured: Develops an interest in poetry. He learned it in order to impress Samus.
  • Wrong Guy First: Gender-flipped. Ridley spends most of his onscreen time trying to find a way to win Samus over, but after a Magic Potion goes wrong (Or so he thinks), Ridley realizes that his true feelings are for Blue.

King K. Rool

The fourth member of the Board of Evil

  • Abhorrent Admirer: The second he lays eyes on Cassandra, he quickly takes a (perverted) liking to her.
  • Dirty Old Man: While it's not clear how old K. Rool is, he's no spring chicken like Cassandra (Who is stated to be 20 years old), which makes his lust for her all the creepier.
  • The Fool: Easily the least competent member of the Board of Evil (And that's saying something). Most of his thoughts revolve around food. And he doesn't seem to understand basic things, (i.e. that "mole" is a synonym for spy), even when it's explained to him multiple times.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: After defeating Cassandra in a battle, K. Rool makes it clear what his intentions with her are. And suddenly it makes sense why Yoshi snapped and unleashed the Dark Star's power to deliver a well-deserved No-Holds-Barred Beatdown.
  • Smart Ball: When K. Rool faces off against Cassandra in the tournament, he proceeds to taunt her, which causes her to become more reckless with her attacks and gave K. Rool the advantage.

Mewtwo

First appearance: Episode 2: Heroes and Villains
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ssbu_mewtwo.png
The enigmatic fifth member of the Board of Evil and Pichu's former mentor. His reasons for joining the Board of Evil remain a mystery, but he has stated that he is trying to destroy the Board of Evil with Pichu's help. Which means he could very well be another mole like Bowser was, but one with his own agenda.

  • Anti-Villain: Mewtwo wants to help Pichu get stronger and claims that he wants what is best for him. To what end, is still unknown. But the fact that he remains aligned with the Board of Evil says a lot.
  • Big Secret:
    • He has one that apparently the Dark Spirit knows, which he uses as leverage against Mewtwo.
    • The Master Hand has one of these as well involving Pichu's Disappeared Dad, which Mewtwo threatens to exploit. The Master Hand, however, passes this off as Mewtwo trying to manipulate Pichu. But Pichu is not exactly convinced.
  • Evil Mentor: Is this to Pichu
  • Only Sane Man: He is easily the smartest and most capable member of the Board of Evil (Even though that's not saying much) and rarely has any comedic moments. He is also the only one who picks up on Bowser's work as a spy.
  • The Starscream: Mewtwo explains to Pichu that he wants to destroy the Board of Evil, but appears to have his own villainous agenda rather than wanting to be a hero.

Bowser

Voiced by: AmaletzTheShark
First appearance: Episode 2: Heroes and Villains
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bowser_ssbu.png
A member of the Board of Evil and eventually revealed to be The Mole for the Ultimate Heroes for Hire. Bowser is largely ignored or disliked by the other board members, and the one thing they can all agree on is teasing him over even the smallest things. Bowser's only friend on the Board is Ridley, and the two frequently hang out together.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Everyone who knows Bowser knows he is one of the most iconic villains in video gaming history (And possibly all of fiction) In this series though, Bowser underwent a Heel–Face Turn some time before the events of the series, and became one of the founding members of the Ultimate Heroes, while serving as a mole to undermine the plans of the Board of Evil.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Ridley is Bowser's only real friend on the board. Everyone else, including Lord Douglas and especially Ganondorf, go out of their way to antagonize him whenever possible.
  • The Lost Lenore: Bowser's wife (And the mother of Bowser Jr), Clawdia is implied to have perished long before the events of the series.
  • The Mole: It's revealed that Bowser was always working for the Ultimate Heroes for Hire, and would leak vital Board of Evil secrets back to them.
  • Mr. Fanservice: In-universe, Bowser has been voted "Smash's Sexiest Man Alive" for five years running. His bulky frame, Doting Parent personality and being a reformed villain all help contribute to his popularity.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: In order to not blow his cover as the UHFH's mole, Bowser presents himself as lazy and dimwitted. For example, he feigned an angry phone call about his pizza order... to McDonald's. Ganondorf is justifiably annoyed by Bowser's apparent idiocy, throwing him off the scent of Bowser's deceit.
  • Secret Test of Character: His fight against Pichu was organized by Palutena and the UHFH to determine if Pichu would be a suitable member of the team.
  • Villains Out Shopping: He and Ridley frequently hang out at Wario's Tavern, and the two get along amicably with the Ultimate Heroes for Hire members once they arrive. The restaurant is deemed "neutral ground" by both parties, although the rest of the Board of Evil is unaware of this.

    Bayonetta & Her Allies

Bayonetta

Voiced by: ChaosX
First appearance: Episode 1: Back In Action
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bayonew.png
The former Smash champion, Bayonetta's fighting prowess was considered legendary... until she got beaten by former Joke Character Pichu in his debut match, which dealt a crippling blow to her ego and reputation. Following this humiliation, Bayonetta swears to exact her vengeance on Pichu.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In her original game, Bayonetta is The Hero. But during her time as Champion of Smash, her power and glory all went to her head. And when Pichu defeats her in their first encounter (In the very first round of the tournament no less), she begins a revenge quest against him.
  • Evil Is Petty: Bayonetta is so obsessed with getting revenge on Pichu that she sends assassins after him and even joins the Board of Evil all because he took her title as Champion.
  • The Dreaded: Her success as a fighter earned her a reputation for being overpowered. Ridley is absolutely terrified of her. Justified, given the Curb-Stomp Battle Bayonetta inflicted on him when he first entered the tournament.
  • Foil: For Pichu. Both of them have held the title of Champion of Smash, and both become arrogant after a winning streak. The difference comes when their winning streak is broken. Pichu works to improve where he is lacking, while Bayonetta comes up with every excuse in the book for why the fight was unfair and that she should have won.
  • It's All About Me: Right off the bat, she brags about how powerful she is and even offers Pichu the chance to forfeit in exchange for sex, simply to ensure that her winning streak isn't broken. And when Pichu manages to defeat her, she begins her revenge quest because she cannot stand the thought of someone else being better than her.
  • Never My Fault: She blames literally everyone but herself for her defeats and cannot comprehend for a second that, just maybe, she is capable of failure.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: After Bayonetta loses to Pichu, she insists on being the one to defeat him in every subsequent encounter.
  • Permission to Speak Freely: Demands that her subordinates request permission before they speak to her.
  • Really Gets Around: Lampshaded by Fox. When she was the champion, she made a habit of offering sex to her opponents in exchange for them forfeiting the match (She even attempted this with Pichu).
  • Sore Loser: Considering how she wants Pichu brutally tortured after only two encounters, saying Bayonetta qualifies as this is an understatement.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Says this word for word after assembling her team, which ends up being comprised of braindead projectile spammers.
  • Unsportsmanlike Gloating: During her time as Champion, she became notorious for being overpowered and rubbing it in the face of her opponents. And anybody who complained was "salty"in her eyes. Even after her loss against Pichu, she deludes herself into believing that she is still the best Fighter in Smash and that Pichu somehow cheated to win.

Simon

First appearance: Episode 4: With Fighters Like These...
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ssbu_simonbelmont.png
One of Bayonetta's allies on her quest for revenge. Simon's only go-to strategy is to toss as many projectiles as possible, and on rare occasion make use of the whip that serves as his "primary" weapon.

Ness

Voiced by: Redway6697
First appearance: Episode 4: With Fighters Like These...
One of Bayonetta's allies on her quest for revenge. His preferred strategy is spamming PK Fire until he's racked up enough damage to finish his opponents off, rarely using any of his other abilities.
  • Dirty Kid: Half the things that come out of Ness' mouth are either sexual innuendos directed toward Bayonetta or him expressing interest in... having relations with Bayonetta.
Ness: If I give her what she wants, then maybe she'll give me what I want. [chuckles]
  • Fire, Ice, Lightning: Ness is armed with varying PK powers. He puts all his faith in PK Fire, however.
  • The Smart Guy: He's the smartest of Bayonetta's goons, though this doesn't really amount to much.

Young Link

Voiced by: TheBoneHeadClan
First appearance: Episode 4: With Fighters Like These...
One of Bayonetta's allies on her quest for revenge. Young Link's specialty is shooting as many arrows as possible, following it up with constantly throwing his boomerang.
  • Battle Boomerang: Throws one out in between barrages of arrows.
  • Forgotten Phlebotinum: His sword. Young Link's mindset is so deeply entrenched in a projectile spam fighting style that when Bayonetta asks about his sword, all he can do is just stare at her blankly.

    The Blades in the Dark

In General

The Blades in the Dark are a group of Hired Guns hired by Bayonetta to capture Pichu so that she can kill him. They are neither good nor evil (Except Blackblade, who kills for pleasure). The Blades in the Dark align themselves with their client, but will readily betray them if an opponent offers a higher bid.

Joker

Voiced by: DragonRider393
First appearance: Episode 4: With Fighters Like These...
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ssbu_joker_1.png

The leader of the Blades in the Dark. He actively seeks out Bayonetta for a job, as the Blades have experienced a shortage in contracts, resulting in a loss of profits. Joker is cunning and charismatic, and always enjoys leaving off a sentence with a pun, much to the chagrin of his colleagues.

  • Adaptational Villainy: In Persona 5, Joker is The Hero. Here, he is a Hired Gun, which means he has no qualms about serving villains.
  • Catchphrase: "Allow me to answer your question with a joke." Whenever someone asks who he is.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: The code of the Blades in the Dark states that they will only kill those whom they are contracted to kill. Civilians and other bystanders cannot be killed as well as if the client demands the target be captured alive. The exceptions to this code are those considered traitors to the Blades in the Dark.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Everyone who hears his jokes has these
  • Pungeon Master: Dads wish they had his kind of humor.

Blackblade

Voiced by: AriesFairy
First appearance: Episode 4: With Fighters Like These...

  • The second member of the Blades in the Dark. She is aggressive and violent, but stealthy and tactical as well.

  • Ax-Crazy: Given that she kills for fun rather than for money, it's reasonable to say she's this
  • Blood Knight: She relishes any opportunity to cause bloodshed, and becomes audibly annoyed/disappointed when she is ordered to restrain herself.
  • For the Evulz: She views killing as a sport, and couldn't care less about whether or not she gets money out of it. She also states outright that her favorite targets are celebrities (Like Pichu, who had become the champion).
  • Tranquil Fury: She rarely raises her voice, and usually speaks in a calm manner. She prefers to let her weapons do the talking.

Meta Knight

Voiced by: Super AntOreo
First appearance: Episode 4: With Fighters Like These...

  • The third member of the Blades in the Dark.

  • Accent Adaptation: He speaks with a Russian accent, which is interesting when you consider that in the English dub of Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, he spoke with a Spanish accent.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: One year prior to the events of the series, he watched Kirby, who he raised like a son, supposedly die at the hands of the Dark Spirit, which is the main reason he ended up joining the Blades in the Dark.

Wave

Voiced by: Spriexxe, Brenna Thornton, Chaos X
First appearance: Episode 4: With Fighters Like These...

Wave is the fourth member of the Blades in the Dark. Her special technique involves seducing her enemies with her sexy appearance and her flirtatious attitude. Pichu becomes just one of the many victims of her facade. But she soon begins to develop legitimate feelings for Pichu after she realizes that he genuinely likes her, and does not take advantage of her seductive persona.

  • Affectionate Nickname: "Sparky" is the pet name she gives Pichu.
  • Broken Bird: Implied to be her reason for joining the Blades in the Dark
  • Crush Filter: Wave's first attempt to regain Pichu's trust leads her to show off her body to win him over, resulting in one of these.
  • Defecting for Love: After she realizes that Pichu genuinely likes her, Wave begins contemplating this.
  • Falling-in-Love Montage: We're given one of these in Episode 5
  • Femme Fatale: Is this initially, Until Pichu opens her heart and she sees that he doesn't just want her for her beauty, he wants her for who she is.
  • Frog Ninja: She's a Greninja, so she naturally plays this trope as straight as you can get.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Zig-Zagged.Even though she is touched by Pichu's admiration of her, Wave suppresses her feelings, and continues the plan to lead him on. Later, she genuinely attempts to regain Pichu's trust, until Blackblade interrupts and Pichu assumes it's another trap.
  • Honey Trap: Played straight the first time, but downplayed in the second, as it was unintentional

     Other Characters

Wario

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wario_2_5.png
A prominent restaurateur and the richest Smasher in the World of Light.
  • Fiction 500: Is outright stated to be the wealthiest Smasher.
  • Insistent Terminology: "That's the Wario Triple Mega Burger with fries on top!"
  • Kitschy Themed Restaurant: All his restaurants are themed after himself. This extends to almost every single item on his menu, as all the food and drinks include “Wario” somewhere in the name. note  The sole exception is wine.
  • Leave No Witnesses: Wario ominously says this as he pulls out a Blaster when Yoshi and Cassandra point out that wine has existed for centuries. Fortunately, nothing serious comes of it.
  • Lethal Eatery: Several of his menu items are loaded with enough fat and grease that they are labeled “heart attack burgers.” He is legally required to inform customers of the health risks should they attempt to eat these items.
Wario: Be warned, it does come with the possibility of a heart attack even in the healthiest individuals.
  • MegaCorp: Wario essentially owns the restaurant industry, with almost any type of catering establishment (bars, pubs, taverns, diners, etc.) operating under the Wario brand. This even extended to a college at one point, though it failed for unknown reasons.
  • Noodle Incident: Nobody knows what caused the college named in Wario’s honor to close its doors.

Marth

The eccentric President of the World of Light.
  • The Comically Serious: Takes his duties as President very seriously. Also prone to whipping out “the Shakespeare voice” on occasion, especially when dealing with royalty and/or with like-minded individuals.
  • Flowery Elizabethan English: Occasionally speaks in “the Shakespeare voice.” This happens more often when around other like-minded Smashers, like Prince Sheldon.
  • Money Dumb: Managed to rack up a ten million dollar debt only a few weeks into his administration. All of it was spent on hookers.
  • Our Presidents Are Different: Falls under the “President Personable” category. Marth appears to routinely mingle among the populace and is always willing to lend a hand to those in need of help.
  • Shockingly Expensive Bill: Somehow spent ten million dollars on prostitutes.
  • Those Two Guys: Is never seen without Roy, his close friend and adviser.

Blue

Voiced by: Chaos X
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/light_blue_yoshi.png
Yoshi's twin Sister. She is most often seen interacting with Ridley after he saves her from a crazed serial killer.
  • The Cutie: Blue is very kind-hearted and open-minded, and she always finds a reason to see the good in everyone, including Ridley.
  • Damsel in Distress: Played straight when she is attacked by a serial killer
  • Kill the Cutie: Subverted, as Ridley comes to her rescue in the nick of time.
  • Morality Pet: Is this to Ridley.

Pikachu

Voiced by: Behon
Pichu's older brother. He comes off as rude and uncaring about him, but deep down, he cares a great deal for his younger sibling and doesn't want him to get hurt.

Prince Sheldon

Voiced by: Stop-That-Guy, Matt Koser
The Prince of the Kingdom of Squirticaucimusivocius. He is madly in love with Cassandra, and is determined to return her home so that he may be the one to marry her. And as much as Cassandra makes it clear that she does not reciprocate his affections, that does not deter him from his mission.

  • Butt-Monkey: Sheldon is not very brave or smart, and his attempts to court Cassandra always end in failure. On top of that, his time in a scene usually ends with him on the receiving end of some sort of violence. (i.e, Ganondorf's sword or accidentally calling Cassandra a damsel in distress
  • Child-Like Voice: Sheldon has a high-pitched falsetto voice.
  • Compete for the Maiden's Hand: When Cassandra attempts to leave with Yoshi, Sheldon stops them and challenges Yoshi to a duel to win Cassandra's heart.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: No matter how many times Cassandra rejects him, Sheldon cannot take the hint that she's not interested in him.
  • Flowery Elizabethan English: Like Marth, Sheldon has a tendency to speak in Shakespearean dialect. But unlike Marth, Sheldon uses this manner of speaking all the time.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: When Sheldon returns in Episode 15 to participate in the tournament, we see that he has evolved into a Wartortle, which means he has been training to get stronger so that he may yet stand a chance at winning Cassandra's heart (Or so he thinks).
  • Oh, Crap!: Has two of these moments, coincidentally, they both arise from similar situations of characters saying Cassandra's trigger word.
    • In the first incident, Sheldon himself accidentally says it, and immediately realizes his mistake. Unfortunately, he cannot escape Cassandra's wrath in time.
    • The second time, K. Rool is the one who says it, and Sheldon realizes he has only seconds to get out of the way before he is caught in the crossfire.
  • The Rival: To Yoshi, as Sheldon constantly tries to compete with him for Cassandra's affections. It is a near one-sided rivalry though, as Yoshi has already won Cassandra's heart, and the reason Yoshi agrees to duel him is moreso out of Sheldon being a nuisance, and to protect Cassandra from being forced into an arranged marriage.

    The Dark Spirit

The Dark Spirit

First appearance: Episode 9: Lending a Hand
A mysterious dark spirit that inhabits a vessel resembling Dark Samus. His identity has yet to be revealed, but he is Lord Douglas's master, and thus, the true Big Bad of the series. His goal involves a mysterious artifact known as the Ultima Seal which he claims will grant him unlimited power
  • Creepy Monotone: With a few exceptions, the Dark Spirit speaks in a relatively calm and stoic voice.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: His first battle after his introduction pits him against Samus, Cassandra and Vanessa, in which he absolutely crushes them. but once Vanessa uses her Final Smash, the tide turns in the girls' favor.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Up until The Stinger of Episode 9, he is completely absent from the series. However, he is mentioned in this very same episode. There are also a few hints of his presence in the ending sequence that plays between Episodes 5 and 9:
  • Hidden Villain: Though he has the appearance of Dark Samus, this is merely a vessel that he is using to interact with the World of Light. His true form has yet to be revealed.
  • Knight of Cerebus: His introduction became the turning point in which the series began delving into darker and more serious subjects.
  • The Man Behind the Man: While Douglas is the leader of the Board of Evil, he answers to the Dark Spirit.
  • Not So Above It All: Even though he is meant to come off as an actual threat compared to the rest of the Board of Evil, that doesn't stop him from having a few comedic moments, such as expressing his annoyance at Lord Douglas's Catchphrase.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: When it is discovered that Pichu is the host for the Master Hand's spirit, the Dark Spirit orders the Board of Evil to capture Pichu alive (After their initial goal was to kill him along with the other Ultimate Heroes), only so that they can extract the Master Hand's spirit. The Dark Spirit then grants permission for the Board to kill Pichu once their mission is complete.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: When Cassandra asks who he is, he simply responds with "I won't bother telling you, because you won't live long enough to care." Subverted though, as Vanessa saves Cassandra just in the nick of time.
  • Walking Spoiler: The identity of the Dark Spirit remains a mystery, as his name in the credits is simply "???".
