Ouroboros, also known as The Society, is one of the most prominent and recurring organizations in the Trails Series. They play a major role and have appearing members in each of the series (thus far) four arcs: the Trails in the Sky arc in Liberl, the Zero/Azure duology in Crossbell, the Trails of Cold Steel arc in Erebonia, and the Trails through Daybreak arc in Calvard.

Ouroboros is a mysterious organization responsible for several incidents occurring throughout the whole series. Their final objective is shrouded in mystery, but they are known to search for the Sept-Terrions and intend to use their power to launch the Orpheus Final Plan. Despite being shrouded from the public eye, they possess a lot of influence and connections to many powerful individuals and political powers, with seemingly unlimited resources coming from their Thirteen Factories. As for their military, they mainly use the services of jaeger corps and numerous Archaisms of their own creation.

The hierarchy of the organization is as follows:

  • The Grandmaster: The founder and leader of the organization. An enigmatic, powerful woman, she has thus far only appeared from the organization's headquarters, the Celestial Globe. All Seven Anguis swear their allegiance to her.
  • The Anguis: Seven extraordinary individuals assigned a number who pledge allegiance to the Grandmaster, responsible for leading and participating in her plans.
    • The Stahlritter: A team of female knights who revere and work under the Seventh Anguis. They are not Enforcers, but this is certainly not for a lack of skill!
  • The Enforcers: A legion of highly powerful and skilled operatives, each assigned a number. The Enforcers execute the plans of the Grandmaster and Anguis.
  • A number of associates, including enhanced jaegers (mercenaries who do footsoldier work).

Tropes applying to the organization itself

  • Badass Crew: Some of the most powerful characters in the series (McBurn, Loewe & Arianrhod) belong to Ouroboros. But even the lesser-ranking members are highly skilled, with each of the Enforcers in the Sky arc shown trouncing squads of Liberlian army soldiers.
  • Bootstrapped Leitmotif: During the Intermission of Kuro II, "Diabolic Howl", a theme from the previous game that plays for battles related to "Pandemonium," is used exclusively for the fight against Lucrezia, Walter, and "Cross-Renne." Given how said piece partially uses the melody of "Maybe It Was Fated," an existing Leitmotif for the Enforcers, it's quite fitting.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Although the enforcers are powerful, they are often eccentric/odd, with Bleublanc flatly telling Duvallie that is the case for most of them.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Surprisingly. Evil as they may be, the code of Ouroboros doesn't allow brainwashed or threatened people to enter its ranks: anyone who wants to join Ouroboros has to do so out of their own free will, and, at least for the Enforcers, they're free to leave at any moment if they want to.
  • Equal-Opportunity Evil: As long as you have the skills and enough 'darkness' within you, Ouroboros welcomes you with open arms. Their high ranks include, but aren't limited to: an Excommunicated priest, at least two survivors of the Hamel Incident, a runaway Witch, a deeply traumatized scythe wielding little girl, a Camp Straight Phantom Thief, and more.
  • Friendly Enemy: At least half the Enforcers and even some Anguis fall into this category over the course of the series.
  • Karma Houdini: Outside of a few members of Ouroboros being killed in the Sky trilogy, they rarely face any real consequences for their crimes outside of getting beat up in a boss fight by the protagonists.
  • Legion of Doom: They are a loose alliance of recurring villains within the series.
  • Leitmotif:
    • Sky SC gave the organization as a whole the theme "Conspiracy."
    • The same game gave the Enforcers two separate themes: the aptly-named "The Enforcers" for cutscenes, and "Fateful Confrontation" for battles.
    • Afterwards, The 3rd included the instumental version of "Maybe It Was Fated" (itself a vocal arrangement inspired by "Fateful Confrontation") for the boss battle against the Enforcers there.
    • Cold Steel III gave the organization "Imbroglio" as a general pre-battle theme.
  • Mecha-Mook: The vast majority of their military force, excluding Enforcers, is composed of Archaisms, autonomous mechanical weapons based after Ancient Zemurian Civilization machines. Whenever Ouroboros shows up, expect Archaisms to follow and replace regular monsters.
  • Nebulous Evil Organisation: They are a wide-spread and enigmatic organization who serve as the overarching antagonists of the series.
  • Offscreen Villain Dark Matter: Ouroboros seems to have nigh-unlimited resources.
  • Organization with Unlimited Funding: At one point it's mentioned that the Society could have built twenty standard sized airships for what it cost to build Pater-Mater. But they did build it, and the airships, and the airship carrier Glorious, and about a dozen mecha bigger than Pater-Mater in the Aions, and all the lesser archaisms... Ouroboros is clearly not constrained by a budget.
  • The Plan: The Orpheus Final Plan, what exactly it entails is a complete mystery.
    • On top of that, there's been other Plans that the Ouroboros works towards that are seemingly connected with the Orpheus Final Plan, including the Gospel Plan, the Phantasmal Blaze Plan and the Eternal Regression Plan.
  • The Omniscient Council of Vagueness: When the then-six Anguis gather during Star Door 14, vibes of this trope are definitely given off. This is also reflected in other scenes that take place in the Celestial Globe, wherein the Anguis are (usually) only presented as a ball of light.
  • Sliding Scale of Antagonist Vileness: Individual members fall all over the scale, from the more loathsome people like Weissmann to the more honorable ones like Arianrhod.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: Their name and logo is 'the snake that eats its own tail', the high ranked members are called Anguis, which is Latin for snake, and are sometimes scornfully referred to by certain characters as "(a) den of snakes". Needless to say, they're not particularly nice people.
  • Strong and Skilled: While their strength and skill compared to each other vary, the combatants among the Anguis and Enforcers are masters in whatever fighting style they practice and are strong enough to shrug off the protagonists' attacks with ease, even after losing a battle gameplay-wise. The few who have playable appearances tend to have better stats than the main party members along with very useful crafts.
  • Villain Teleportation: Enforced. Their members make use of teleporting technology, but this only works if they're currently loyal to the organization. If they break away from the organization, they lose the ability to teleport with this technology, as shown when Duvalie leaves Arianrhod's side in Cold Steel IV. Some members, such as Campanella and Vita, are capable of teleporting under their own power.

    The Grandmaster (Unmarked Spoilers!
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/grandmaster.PNG
The Grandmaster as depicted in Trails into Reverie
Voiced by: Miwa Yasuda (Japanese, drama CD), Yuki Nagaku (Japanese, Sky the 3rd Evolution), Kanae Itō (Japanese, Cold Steel IV)
Appearances: The 3rd | Cold Steel IV | Reverie

The supreme leader of Ouroboros, she aims to complete the Orpheus Final Plan by any means necessary.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: In The 3rd, she's the only one to mourn Weissmann's downfall equally as she does Loewe's death, in contrast to all other Anguis who only show spite towards Weissmann.
  • All According to Plan: Despite not physically obtaining the Earth, Fire, and Mirage Sept-Terrion, she declares that the Phantasmal Blaze Plan is a success and the losses that the society had were within expectations.
  • Ambiguously Evil: There's no doubt that Ouroboros does very bad things and that most of its members are very bad people, however the goals of the Grandmaster herself and her morality is still completely unknown. Most notably, she states at the end of Cold Steel IV that the 'Nothingness of all' is approaching, but it's left ambiguous if it's something she wants or is actually trying to prevent.
  • Covers Always Lie: Despite the fact that she's on the cover of Reverie, she only appears in the side episode after beating Ark Kaitos where she has made a deal with the new president of Calvard, Roy Gramhardt.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: First shows up in The 3rd as a voice in Star Door 14.
  • The Faceless: She makes her voice-only debut in the 3rd and remains offscreen for the remainder of the series until Cold Steel IV. Her face isn't fully revealed in Cold Steel IV either, though observant players can make it out. Reverie marks her first appearance for real.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: As the undisputed leader of Ouroboros and the one who drafted the Gospel and Phantasmal Blaze Plans, she's directly and indirectly responsible with most of the major incidents in the series.
  • Hypocrite: The Grandmaster has a policy where people must join Ouroboros of their own free will. Despite this, there are cases of people joining that contradict this rule:
    • Joshua was brainwashed by Weissman into becoming an Enforcer. Not only did the Grandmaster allow Joshua to work for Ouroboros as an Enforcer, but she never punished Weissman for breaking her rules.
    • According to Sharon, when Ouroboros attacked the Order of the Moonlight Horse, they killed every member of the group except for her, the Golden Butterfly, and the Thousand Oathbreaker, who all joined the Society afterwards. While not outright stated as such, it implies that they joined under threat of death, and didn't really have much of a choice in the matter.
  • She Is the King: The Grandmaster of Ouroboros is female.
  • Ultimate Blacksmith: Of a sort. Her ability to manipulate the Divergent Laws allows her to create weapons with supernatural abilities, which she sometimes grants to her agents, such as Weissman's staff and the demonic swords which Loewe and McBurn have.
  • The Voice: For the grand majority of the series she's never seen and only mentioned, with the only thing preventing her from becoming The Ghost outright is her brief dialogue in The 3rd. She's finally shown for the first time at the end of the Golden Ending of Cold Steel IV, although her face isn't fully shown (though an observant player can somewhat see the color of her eyes being red). Her face is fully revealed in Reverie, talking to the new president of Calvard, Roy Gramhardt.
  • Voice of the Legion: When she speaks during the Golden Ending of Cold Steel IV, two distinct voices can be heard.
  • You Cannot Grasp the True Form: During her talk with McBurn in The Stinger of Reverie, he states that while he has a hunch about her true identity, knowing for sure would force him to shed his human form and revert to his true form, suggesting this trope to be at play, at least for beings of the Beyond.

The Seven Anguis

Seven individuals who pledge their loyalty to the Grandmaster and execute her plans.

The Enforcers

A Badass Crew of operatives who execute Ouroboros plots. Each of the Enforcers is assigned a number, but unlike the Anguis, their number is displayed in Roman Numerals. As per the Society's code, the Enforcers are not bound to the will of others and are granted complete freedom.

Stahlritter

A trio of female knights that work exclusively under the Seventh Anguis.

    Duvalie the Swift
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/duvalie_sen_iii.png
Duvalie in her Stahlritter armor
Duvalie in casual wear
Voiced by: Naomi Ozora (Japanese), Eden Riegel*(English)

The head knight of the Stahlritter, who makes her first notable appearance during Cold Steel II, overseeing Erebonia's side of Phantasmal Blaze Plan in Arianrhod's stead. During Cold Steel III, she along with her fellow knights Ennea and Ines joins Arianrhod in the reclamation of the Phantasmal Blaze Plan.

  • A Day in the Limelight: She is the co-lead of the Unlimited Blade Crafts episode in Reverie, sharing the spotlight with Rean.
  • After-Action Patch-Up: She personally heal Juna during one of their interactions during Cold Steel IV after she suffer a minor wound during training.
  • Almighty Janitor: She, along with her fellow members in the Stahlritter (and the useless Gilbert), are the only named Ouroboros members who aren't an Enforcer or a member of the Anguis. This does not mean that she's weak in anyway, with both Bleublanc and Sharon themselves explicitly stating that she's just as skilled as one despite not having a number. To wit, she once won a fight against Loewe, though she proceeded to lose 99 times after that.
  • Amazon Brigade: The proud leader of of the powerful, all female Stahlritter.
  • Angrish: Because of her Hair-Trigger Temper, she has a tendancy to get infuriated at the slightest displeasure, be it something that is actually a hinder to Ouroboros's plans, being exasperated by her fellow tendancies, or simply being teased by people who noticed her overblown reactions to taunts and get a kick out of it.
  • Anti-Villain: Despite being a proud member of Ouroboros and not the most amiable person you can deal with, it is made clear that Duvalie possess the qualities of the knights she typically associate with. During Cold Steel III, she and Shirley settle for giving the Branch Campus a scare during their attack instead of using disproportionate violence against unexperimented students (though Shirley required an external intervention to prevent her from blowing the Derfflinger during her frenzy), instead advicing them to cease their operations in the regions before they are forced to escalate things and later in the game, after subduing Millium in Ordis, the Stahlritter don't even think about using her in a Hostage Situation despite the fact that it would allow them to get rid of some annoying obstacles for Ouroboros's plans. She eventually decide that enough is enough and take a break from the society during Cold Steel IV and join the Radiant Wings in order to prevent the Great Twilight.
  • Armored Villains, Unarmored Heroes: She ends up siding with the protagonists while ditching the armor in Cold Steel IV. Played with, as she eventually put it back on during the Salt Pales.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: During her episode in Reverie, she resolve Rean's fears of using Spirit Unification with one of these.
Duvalie: While your ogre powers reached their peak and even your hair and eye color changed... you were the most dangerous you'd ever been, but did any of your friends flee from you in fear ?
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Girl: Will not miss a chance to boast how strong she is thanks to her mistress' training. ESPECIALLY to Laura, who she mocks by claiming the Arseid school as an insignificant branch school. Though she hastily backs down when the Radiant Blademaster offers to give her satisfaction for whatever grievance she has against his family.
    • Downplayed in the later games when she met other swordsman far above her level, which considerably humble her. The evolution reach its pinnacle during Reverie where she confide in her episode that she is entertaining the thought of studying under Aurelia in order to perfect her swordsmanship.
  • Ascended Extra: She went from a minor one-shot character during her debut in Azure, note  to a recurring lesser villain with a clearly-defined personality in Cold Steel II and III, to having an important role in Cold Steel IV once she ends up joining the heroes. She's the guest party member with the longest time in the party and is basically available for 3/4 of the game minus a few dungeons. In fact she's pretty much the entire focus of the penultimate arc of the game against her former Master. She's also the only guest to have bond events and an ending scene with Rean, though she can't become a love interest.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Duvalie is the leader of the Stahlritter despite being the youngest of their members and is frequently teased by her fellow knights by virtue of her character making it extremely easy to do so.
  • Badass Adorable: It's shown that a few people find her temperament to be kind of endearing, with even Jessica & Wayne (students she tried to kill a few months prior) sharing the sentiment. However, it would still be a grave mistake to underestimate her as one does not become the second in command of the Stahlritter through nepotism.
  • Badass Boast: She may well be, well... but that doesn't stop her from delivering this line...
Duvalie: We may have fought before, but that was a mere taste of what I'm truly capable of. Come at me with all that you have. I am the head knight of the Stahlritter, Duvalie the Swift... ...and I shall defeat every one of you.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: It's easy to underestimate her given how neurotic and easily flustered she is. That would be a mistake.
  • Big Eater: She is first introduced devouring food in Legram's inn. Also, the size of her plate during the Imperial Wedding would make Ries proud.
  • Birds of a Feather: Ultimately despite the one-sided animosity she displays towards Laura, the two of them have pretty much the same goals and ideals and as such, are able to bond easily when they are on the same side.
  • Book Ends: Her first appearance in Cold Steel II saw her eating in Legram's inn pestering about the Arseid. Her last appearance in Cold Steel IV shows her eating in the Imperial Wedding next to Laura.
  • Butt-Monkey: Poor Duvalie is constantly on the receiving end of humiliations, whether it's being abandoned by her apathetic partner McBurn or repeatedly beaten down (and sometimes pitied) by Class VII. And that's in spite of her surprisingly strong combat capabilities. She can't seem to escape this status in the third game, since her first appearance alongside Shirley has the latter grope Duvalie's boobs. Later on, Ines and Ennea tease her that she might be into McBurn as the both of them see her together with him. Then McBurn starts teasing that Duvalie might be into Rean. Yeah, girl can't catch a break.
  • Challenge Seeker: As shown during her episode in Reverie, Rean and she end up participating in the martial art tournament taking place the day after the Imperial Wedding. Despite the tournament having heavyweights such as Aurelia, Cassius, Victor and Arios participating, the two of them aren't discouraged by their low prospects of winning and only seek to witness firsthand the abilites of their betters. They are eventually allowed to make a group of 4 people instead of 2 because it is recognized that it would be a uninteresting Curb-Stomp Battle for every party otherwise.
  • Combination Attack: She loses Prism Calibur in Cold Steel III, and instead has joint S-Crafts with Ines and Ennea. One with each of them and one with all three attacking together.
  • The Comically Serious: Seems to be one of the few members of Ouroboros who actually takes her position seriously, making her a perfect foil to her partners, Bleublanc and McBurn.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: She starts doubting her master about the Phantasmal Blaze Plan in Cold Steel III after witnessing what the Great Twilight will bring. As such, she side with Class VII during Cold Steel IV to prevent the Great Twilight and find out the reason why Arianrhod is willing to go through it.
  • Continuity Nod: She first appeared as one of Arianrhod battle maiden who the SSS fight on the way to the top of Stargazer Tower along with Ines and Ennea.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Duvalie comes across as the overly serious comedy relief, a chew-toy whose only role is to get beaten up by the protagonists and shown up by the more dangerous bad guys. However, she's actually an extremely capable fighter, as Rean and company discover in their fight against her in the Infernal Castle.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She was a minor noble from a foreign land until bandits destroyed her village. Following this, she was taken by Arianrhod.
  • Defeat Means Playable: In both Cold Steel IV and Reverie, she need to be defeated in a Dual Boss and a Duel Boss respectively before she joins the party.
  • Determinator: She challenged Loewe a hundred times despite being clearly not on par with him. It's also implied that Loewe throw his one loss against her because of her drive.
  • Didn't Think This Through: She intended to leave Class VII after helping Crow in the 1st Rivalry, only to be reminded that she has no means of transportation and no back-up from the Society to leave Bryonia Island forcing her to stick with Class VII.
  • Doomed Hometown: While the exact circumstances are unknown, Duvalie confide during Cold Steel III that her hometown suffered a fate similar to Hamel's.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: Her S-Craft Prism Caliber, complete with Flash Step.
  • Dual Boss: A lot of them. During the Erebonia Arc, she partners with McBurn, Bleublanc, Shirley, Crow and Laura.
  • Duel Boss: Ends up dueling Rufus in Reverie. She ends up losing due to Rufus playing dirty by using his ARCUS II to trap her and then goes in to disarm her.
  • Due to the Dead: Along with Shirley, she makes a point in Cold Steel III to not pick a fight with Agate and Class VII in the remains of Hamel and move to the canyon before starting their fight.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: The Stahlritter appeared without much characterization in the Crossbell arc, and before her formal introduction as a character in Cold Steel II, she can be seen sampling Legram's cuisine at the inn, enjoying the food but hating how respected the Arseids are in the area.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: When she is introduced in Azure, the main gimmick of her fight is that she use the Body Split craft just like Loewe to spawn copies of herself. This aspect is completely absent in subsequent appearances, but it is especially jarring in Cold Steel II considering the fact that the game happen in the same timeframe as Azure.
  • Elemental Powers: Her crafts include elemental slashes that inflict status ailments. These are freeze, burn and paralysis.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: She has knightly pride after all. She tells Duke Albarea that she would have gladly gutted him on sight for razing down Celdic if her master hadn't ordered her not to.Cold Steel III ramps this up when she sees the Courageous destroyed in the most anti-climactic fashion and is shocked at it along with being told the end result of the Great Twilight.
  • Evil Counterpart: Duvalie is introduced in Cold Steel II as a stark contrast to Laura. While both aspire to become paragons of knighthood, Laura is dignified, calm and idolize the Lance Maiden and her Eisenritter while Duvalie tend to be rude with a short fuse while devoting herself completely to the Steel Maiden while leading the Stahlritter.
  • Evil Is Petty: During Cold Steel II, when Laura ask her about the similitudes between the Eisenritter and the Stahlritter, Duvalie take great pleasure in denying her request in the pettiest way possible, hoping to get a rise out of her. Laura is more confused by her refusal and the ensuing contrast between their reaction piss Duvalie off.
  • Failed a Spot Check: She runs into Rufus' party during Act 4 of Reverie and immediately attacks him to avenge Arianrhod. She didn't realize how odd it was that the supposed Supreme Leader who took over Crossbell was not only out of the city, but was actively fighting against his own troops until Renne and the others pointed it out to her, after losing what she thought would be a Duel to the Death to him. Somewhat justified as she was likely Blinded by Rage from being face-to-face with her lord's killer.
  • Fair-Play Villain: A trait shown especially during Cold Steel III where her honor and distaste for cowardly tactics lead her to refuse using an subdued Millium as an advantage during a fight with Class VII.
  • Fangirl: Of Arianrhod.
  • Fighting Your Friend: As a result of seceding from Ouroboros during the Great Twilight, Duvalie is forced to take arms against her fellow Stahlritter during the assault on the Black Workshop and the 3rd Rivalry. While this turn of event clearly leave her in anguish, she recognizes it also give her the opportunity to show them her growth.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Following her Heel–Face Turn and despite her reluctance, she and Class VII ally during Cold Steel IV to prevent the Great Twilight. Their association lead them to eventually consider her a friend and comrade (despite her initial protests on the subject) and she eventually come around a return the sentiment, most notably toward Rean, Crow and Laura.
  • Fire, Ice, Lightning: The three elements of her Brand crafts.
  • Freak Out: After her final fight in Cold Steel II, once she realize she is losing ground against Class VII, she completely freak out, granting her a second wind and taking back control of the fight, until Toval and Olivert pull a Big Damn Heroes allowing Class VII to keep climbing the Infernal Castle.
  • Friendship Denial: She sides with Class VII during Cold Steel IV in order to avert the Great Twilight but make clear that this is temporary and only happened because they share a goal. She eventually changed her mind.
  • Friendship Moment: After spending most of her time in Cold Steel IV insisting that she and Class VII are not friends, she actually refer to them as this during her final event in Cold Steel IV.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: In her side episode in Reverie, she delivers this speech to Rean when he is hesitant to use Spirit Unification following the Great Twilight.
  • Get It Over With: In Reverie, after losing her duel to Rufus, she prompt him to kill her. While Rufus clearly is The Unfettered, even as his worse, he is still an adept of Pragmatic Villainy and as such, has no reason to kill her and refuse to do so. Afterward, Duvalie cool her head and is brought up to light by Renne and reluctantly joins the party.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Even though she mellows out, she keep her temper as a party member.
  • Good Costume Switch: Upon joining Class VII during Cold Steel IV, she put her armor aside to wear casual clothes. Her reasoning being that while she is doubting her master, she is no longer fit to wear the Stahlritter armor. Later in the game and once her internal conflict is resolved, she put back the armor despite still siding with Class VII.
  • Graceful Loser: Zig-zagged. While Duvalie is able to recognize her own defeats with grace, whatever she is willing to do so depend of who her opponent is and of the type of competition.
  • Grew a Spine: As a result of her Character Development during Cold Steel IV, she learns to question her master's decisions and stand by her convictions. It comes to a head in her Episode during Reverie, where she tells Rean that even if she return to Ouroboros, she will never do something that is opposed to her values counting on the Society lenient policies with Enforcers. This is lampshaded in her link victory with Crow in Reverie.
Crow: Heh, I thought you’d never get that stick out but look at you now !
Duvalie : I…Hmph… So what if I changed ? There is no shame in personal growth.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: As a result of having to play the straight woman so often.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She pulls it in the intermission of Cold Steel IV, when she and Crow help Rean escape from the Black Workshop. Even after the event of the game and her subsequent return to Ouroboros, she tells Rean she will use the liberty proper to Ouroboros's officers to never betray her beliefs ever again.
  • Heal Thyself: When playable during Cold Steel IV, she comes with the Dunamis EX Master Quartz allowing her to heal herself of a percentage of the damage she deals.
  • Hidden Buxom: According to Shirley, her bust might look small, but it's actually around the same size as Mariabell's. Though she's apparently still smaller than Ines and Ennea.
  • Holding Hands: At the end of both of her interactions with Rean in Cold Steel IV and Reverie, the two of them share an handshake as a sign of trust in the first case and as a duel promise in the second.
  • Honorary True Companion: She is recognized as one by Class VII shortly before they face Arianrhod during the 3rd Rivalry. She stays cool but is clearly touched by the declaration of friendship. Reverie drives this home by having her join them for a "beach vacation."
  • Ignorant Minion: Despite spending 8 years with Arianrhod, she never seem to have wondered why her master was siding with Ouroboros in the first place and is completely taken aback once she realize that her lord's endgoal is directly linked to The End of the World as We Know It. The contradiction between her understanding of Arianrhod character and the current result of her actions lead Duvalie to temporarly leave her side to follow her own beliefs and at the same time, figure out why her beloved master would usher such an event.
  • Irrational Hatred: Duvalie loathe the Arseid family for what she perceived is a slight towards Arianrhod, namely taking the place that her master should rightfully have. This hatred is neither shared by Arianrhod herself (as she entrusted the Legram lordship to Victor & Laura's ancestor before leaving to walk Zemuria) nor by the Arseid family (who are still reverent to Lianne Sandlot to this day and are confused about why the knight girl from the society seems to personally hate their guts). This hatred dies down later in the Cold Steel arc but is still used sometimes to comedic effects.
  • It's Personal: Especially shown during Reverie, but Rufus' murder of Arianrhod lead Duvalie to be angrily homicidal during their first encounter.
  • Impoverished Patrician: Last survivor of a minor noble house that was wiped out by bandits before she met Arianrhod.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: While she may have bragged about being equal to Loewe to the SSS, she admits to Rean that she was never much of a match to him.
  • Insistent Terminology: Duvalie make a point of not referring to Laura by her full name but as either “the Arseid girl” or rarely referring to her as Laura Arseid while dropping the S. In hindsight, Duvalie refusing to associate the family she deems to be little more than a branch school with the Sandlot name of her master make sense.
  • Instant Costume Change: At one point changes from a blue dress to her brown Battle Ballgown between camera shifts. While Rean is in the room talking to her. And judging by his lack of comment on the matter, without him seeing anything naughty or being asked to look away.
  • I Owe You My Life: Arianrhod saved her when she was a child and took her in.
  • Jerkass: Duvalie is not pleasant to be around during Cold Steel II, which is made especially jarring as she is usually partnered with Bleublanc and McBurn, who are far more affable than she is. Downplayed in later games, where she's mostly just kind of grouchy, but her good side is more apparant.
  • Know When to Fold Them: Despite her feelings towards the Arseid family, she instantly refuses a duel against Victor knowing she is outmatched.
  • Knightly Sword and Shield: Though she never really uses the shield.
  • Last-Name Basis: When she becomes an ally in Cold Steel IV, she refers to Rean and Crow as "Schwarzer" and "Armbrust."
  • Letting Her Hair Down: One of her alternate skins in Akatsuki no Kiseki is her at the beach. The result may surprise you.
  • Lightning Bruiser: In her case, it's literal in that she incorporates lightning in her attacks, especially with her S-Craft. Her stats when playable also heavily enforces Strength and Speed. Reverie takes it up a notch as with a proper build and her improved Lightning Sword Brave Order, her Swift Slash attack can get a delay of 1 meaning that she can act again almost indefinitely. What makes her not that powerful and thus, the second coming of Alan Richard, is that the CP costs of her crafts in general are too expensive that she will easily run out of CP even with accessories and a Master Quartz that refills CP as they're so small to refill any of it.
  • Limit Break: Her S-Craft is Prism Caliber.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: She is the only character in the series to use a shield. However...
    • Shields Are Useless: Her defenses are pretty average compared to her fellow maiden Ines.
      • Finally subverted in Reverie where she uses her shield in a cutscene, blocking the Emperor Dogma's attack targeted at Lapis.
  • Luminescent Blush: Rean manages to make her blush after complementing her for being a sincere woman.
  • Master Swordsman: Once beat the Bladelord in a duel. Granted, Loewe won the other 99 times they fought, but still, being able to stand against one of the strongest swordmaster in the world is quite an impressive feat.
  • Mood-Swinger: Can go from cocky and proud to utterly pissed in a really short amount of time.
  • Minion with an F in Evil: Pretty much all of her attempts to sound threatening fall completely flat.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Asks herself, Ines and Ennea this after seeing what she helped to realize at the climax of Cold Steel III.
  • No-Respect Guy: Ennea loves poking fun at her and Ines seems amused by the whole ordeal, leaving her as this. However, both of them recognize her strength and despite the tease, Ennea will be eternally grateful towards Duvalie for saving her.
  • The Not-Love Interest: She can serve as this to Rean during Cold Steel IV by virtue of being one of the two women (with Celine) who don't have a romantic Final Bonding event. Despite some Ship Tease, her final interaction with Rean is merely a shared Friendship Moment. Justified when you consider than they've only been interacting on the same side for two weeks.
  • Not So Above It All: While she might play the sane woman among Ouroboros, she also has some quirky moments like attempting to taunt Laura about not revealing how similar the Eisenritter and the Stahlritter are in the most childish way possible, only for her to get pissed off at Laura not biting, and for her over the top praising she gives towards her master.
    • During the Beach Episode in Reverie, she actually press Celine to accompany her in the Banana Boat.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: Don't let her status as the Butt-Monkey fool you into thinking she's weak. She's part of the Stahlritter for a good reason, as Class VII find out in the Infernal Castle.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: The Stahlritter are an oddity in Ouroboros, given they aren't loyal to the Grandmaster but to Arianrhod.
  • Only Sane Woman: Recurringly. In Cold Steel II, she finds herself paired with the apathetic McBurn and the hammy Bleublanc. The third game pairs her with Shirley and Ennea. Finally, she strike an alliance with Crow during Cold Steel IV.
  • Only the Worthy May Pass: She will challenge in battle anyone who would dare face her lord.
  • Parts Unknown: She refer to Erebonia as a faraway land when discussing her backstory and came from a noble family which rules out the possibility of her being from Calvard, making it likely that she hails from Center or Eastern Zemuria.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Zigzagged. One of her beefs with the Bracer way is that just like Arianrhod, she believe in dispensing justice to evildoers, regardless of the law that they are able to ignore or that are actively protecting them. As such in Cold Steel II, she claims that if it were not for Arianrhod's orders, she would have murdered Duke Albarea herself for what he did to Celdic and its townpeople. However, she is perfectly fine with criminals being punished by law, as she claims in Reverie when facing Rufus that if he hadn't escaped prison, there would be no need to further escalate things.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • She is the first one to sugget to not pick a fight with Agate and Class VII in the remains of Hamel and move to the canyon before starting their fight.
    • Despite grumbling about it, she help Wayne & Jessica in their training by sparring with them and pointing the flaws to improve in their styles.
    • She also prompt Juna to get one of her sparring injuries healed despite Juna treating it as a mere scratch.
  • Promoted to Playable: Becomes a party member in Cold Steel IV, cementing her Heel–Face Turn.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Ironic given the above trope. If she loses her temper (which is often) she will throw childish tantrums, whine a lot, and make all kinds of violent threats to anyone in her vicinity.
  • Pure Is Not Good: As noted above, she is incredibly powerful, with her strength surpassing even some of Ouroboros's Enforcers, yet is not an Enforcer herself. Talking to her aboard the Pantagruel will reveal that the major reason she isn't is because the Grandmaster of Ouroboros requires that a person must have some kind of deep "darkness" in their heart to be an Enforcer. After learning this, Rean can immediately tell that Duvalie has nothing of the sort in her nature.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives one towards Duke Albarea for him even thinking that she's there to defend him and states that he better be happy she didn't gut him personally.
  • Regretful Traitor: During Cold Steel IV, she temporarly take a leave from the Stahlritter in order to oppose the Great Twilight. When confronted by Ines and Ennea in the Black Workshop, she tell them that leaving them break her heart, but that she feel she can't keep following Arianrhod through this and has to settle the mess they started.
  • Say My Name: Screams "Master!" in the trailer of Cold Steel IV as of unknown reasons. Then the game reveals the horrifying context...
  • Sailor Fuku: Her DLC costume in Cold Steel IV has her wearing a white school girl uniform with a black skirt.
  • Secret-Keeper: She knows her master is Lianne Sandlot. However, she did not knew that she was also Argreion's Awakener.
  • Smart People Play Chess: Inverted. In Cold Steel IV, Rean can walk on her and Sara playing chess in the Courageous II. While Sara reveal she is proficient as chess but not on Rean’s level (and even less on Machias’), the Curb-Stomp Battle she dishes to Duvalie leave Rean pitying her, while she is desperate to find a move to regain momentum and not lose miserably. She clarifies that Arianrhod did taught her how to play but she is a poor learner.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: Tend to talk in a formal way, unless she is losing her temper. In which case, she can switch to crude language real fast. Made especially clear when she conclude her Establishing Character Moment by a blunt "Sucks to be you !".
  • Spell Blade: A few of her crafts allows her to enchant her blade with fire, ice or lightning.
  • Spirited Competitor: Duvalie is a pretty competitive woman, may it be in swordsmanship where a hundred loses against Loewe didn't hinder her motivation or in more trivial topics like drinking contests.
  • Squee: When she meet a famed Master Swordsman above her level like Cassius or Arios, she is prone to doing this, unless said swordsman is an Arseid.
  • Sword Pointing: Does this quite often, even towards her master when they end up fighting against one another in Cold Steel IV.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork:
    • At the beginning of Cold Steel IV by virtue of being paired with Crow. She later comes to appreciate her time with Class VII for granting her some Character Development and the opportunity to show her master how much she's grown.
    • Meanwhile in Reverie, circumstances lead her to assist Rufus (despite him being the one to kill her master) in solving Crossbell's occupation. While she is hesitant to work with him, she puts up with it as there's more important things going on that do require his help. At the end of the game, she visits the hospital and hands him a fruit basket as while she has witnessed his Character Development firsthand, there is no way she will let him die before she can avenge Lianne by defeating him in a duel.
  • The Magnificent: The Swift, her Red Baron title, which refers to her nimble swordplay.
  • To Be a Master: Just like Rean, Laura and Kurt, Duvalie follow the "path of the sword" and is devoted to reaching the pinnacle of martial arts her master represent.
  • To Be Lawful or Good: A anti-villain example.Duvalie spent her time between the end of Cold Steel III and Cold Steel IV Fragment processing whathever keeping her Undying Loyalty to Arianrhod in the face of the Great Twilight (the Lawful option) or staying true to her beliefs and siding against the approaching apocalypse by her lonesome (the Good option). After a push from Crow, she chooses the Good option.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: By the time of Cold Steel IV and following her association with Class VII and the Radiant Wings, she tones down her irritable behaviour a bit and is shown to be able to have others interactions apart from shouting at people.
  • True Companions: Despite the two of them being Out of Focus, she share an deep friendship with Ines and Ennea.
  • Tsundere: Despite the few times she sided with the heroes, she keeps insisting that she is no friend of them. This also extends to Rufus in Reverie where she hands him a fruit basket during the ending to wish him a fast recovery in order to duel him.
  • Underestimating Badassery: When she faces Rean during Cold Steel II Intermission, she immediately assume that Rean's claim to Alfin that he should be able to force his way through is no more than empty bravado, unlike Bleublanc who actually take the hint that Rean has an ace up his sleeve. She is proven wrong a few seconds later when Rean master Spirit Unification and prove himself to be a match for the both of them.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Arianrhod. Duvalie will follow Arianrhod to the end of Zemuria, partially because Arianrhod is both her Parental Substitute and life model. The loyalty extend even after Lianne's demise, as the Stahlritter decide to remain in Ouroboros as a way of carrying her legacy, despite essentially running out of reasons to.
  • Unknown Rival: She absolutely loathes the Arseid family and is always eager to fight Laura and belittle her family when given the chance. Laura doesn't really care and is quite bewildered about the whole deal.
    • She tones it down a bit by Cold Steel IV.
  • Unstoppable Rage: During Reverie, the moment she recognize C as Rufus Albarea, she instantly try to kill him and cannot be reasoned with until Rufus defeat her in a Duel Boss.
  • Unwanted Rescue: If she is healed or assisted with Cheer during Cold Steel IV and Reverie, one of her lines is telling her helper that she can manage without their help.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: Though she's still strong in her own right, it's apparent that by the time of Cold Steel III she hasn't really improved all that much during the time between II and III. As a result of this , the original Class VII members are now capable of standing off against her on even footing with Rean himself being potentially better than her. She's aware of this too, as she goes from looking down on Rean and Laura to treating them like dangerous opponents worthy of her time.
  • Villains Out Shopping: During Cold Steel II, the first time you can encounter her is when she is dining in Legram's inn.
  • Villain Respect: Even if she praise her master as the strongest there is, she isn't ashamed of commending an opponent strength and gives them the respect they deserve. This is her main issue with Alberich blowing up the Courageous with Victor still inside.
  • Walking Spoiler: A more subdued exemple that other characters, but it is hard to talk about Duvalie without mentionning that she pull a Heel–Face Turn during Cold Steel IV.
  • What the Hell Are You?: Her reaction following her fight with Spirit Unification Rean during Cold Steel II Intermission.
  • The Worf Effect: During Cold Steel II despite not losing the fight per se, she and Bleublanc serve as this during the Intermission in order to show that Rean using Spirit Unification is able to punch way above his weight by matching them in a fight alone while he need the help of Class VII to do so before.
  • Worf Had the Flu: The only reason she loses to Class VII in Aurochs Fort during Cold Steel II was because she just came back from Stargazer Tower where she fought the SSS without any break.
  • Worthy Opponent: She considers both Rean & Laura to be this by the time of Cold Steel III.Post Heel–Face Turn, Laura becomes her regular training partner and goes as far as calling her a friend, with Duvalie being shown to return the sentiment in their link-attack victory in Reverie.
  • You Killed My Father: She naturally took Rufus's murder of Arianrhod very personally. She was content with leaving him rot in a cell after his arrest, but wasted no time infiltrating Crossbell upon learning that he supposedly took over Crossbell, fully intending to kill him this time. She tones it down by the end of Reverie after witnessing his Character Development firsthand, though she insists on challenging him to duels until she can best him in combat.

    Ines the Stout
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ines_sen_iii.png
Voiced by: Mami Douno (Japanese, Azure), Mariya Ise (Japanese, Cold Steel III onwards), Erin Fitzgerald (English)

A knight of the Stahlritter, she joins Arianrhod in the reclamation of the Phantasmal Blaze Plan during Cold Steel III.

  • 11th-Hour Ranger: She joins the Radiant Wings in time for the final dungeon.
  • Badass Boast: In Cold Steel IV, when she face Duvalie and Class VII in the lead up to the third Rivalry.
Ines: I am Ines the Stout. My lord granted me that title, and I will repay her by living up to it! I am the wall you cannot overcome! The fortress you will crash upon! Now! To battle!
  • Combination Attack: In Cold Steel III, instead of a solo S-Craft, she has joint S-Crafts with Duvalie and Ennea. One with each of them and one with all three attacking together.
  • Continuity Nod: She first appeared as one of Arianrhod battle maidens who the SSS fight on the way to the top of Stargazer Tower along with Duvalie and Ennea.
  • Defeat Means Loyalty: Was previously a Bracer, but became one of Arianrhod's Stahritter after losing to her in a battle.
  • Demoted to Extra: She's one of only 4 playable characters from Cold Steel IV who were reduced to NPCs in Reverie.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: When storming Juno Naval Fortress, she lambasts Marquis Ballad for cowardly running into the fortress to save his own skin at the cost of the rest of his subjects. And long with Duvalie and Ennea, she's not pleased when the Courageous is blown up by George and Alberich. She tries to justify it as part of her master's wish, but she's clearly conflicted about it.
  • Heel–Face Turn: By the end of Cold Steel IV, she joins the Radiant Wings and leaves Ouroboros.
  • Mighty Glacier: She is the Stout after all. It isn't unusual for her to outlive her lord when you face them in combat.
  • Not So Stoic: Not even Ines can resist teasing Duvalie from time to time, though not to nearly the same degree as Ennea.
  • Promoted to Playable: By Cold Steel IV, all three Stahlritter are playable.
  • Red Baron: She is called "Ines the Stout."
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: She left the Bracer Guild because she resented how powerless they were in front of criminals linked to government.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She is said to be tall, sporting 180 rege. As a reminder, rege is the Zemurian equivalent of centimeter in height. Meaning that Innes would be 5'11 by our standards.
  • The Stoic: She's very serious about her duty, and rarely emotes.

  • Even Evil Has Standards: Along with Duvalie and Innes, she's clearly not pleased when the Courageous is blown up by George and Alberich. It's one of the few times she's seen with a dead serious face.
  • Heel–Face Turn: By the end of Cold Steel IV she joins the Radiant Wings and leaves Ouroboros.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: She possess ability Magic Bow which makes her always hits her target and change her arrow trajectory midair.
  • I Owe You My Life: She joined the Stahlritter to thank Arianrhod and Duvalie for saving her from the Cult.

  • Shipper on Deck: During their trek in their assigned dungeon in Cold Steel IV, Ennea starts teasing Duvalie as to how far she's gotten with Rean during the time when Duvalie was with Rean. Duvalie is not amused to say the least.
  • Troll: Enjoys teasing Duvalie, though it's all in good fun.

Other Members of Ouroboros

    Gilbert Stein

Gilbert as an enhanced jaeger, as depicted in Akatsuki no Kiseki
Gilbert as the mayor's steward
SPOILER
G-Apache
Voiced by: Hisayoshi Suganuma (Japanese) , Bryce Papenbrook (English)
Appearances: FC | SC | The 3rd | Cold Steel IV | Reverie

Introduced as the right-hand man of the former mayor of Ruan, Dalmore, he winds up joining Ouroboros as an enhanced jaeger.

  • Ambition Is Evil: He's willing to resort to all sorts of corruption and crime to get ahead in life, even if it means burning down an orphanage or taking his Alma Mater hostage.
  • Asshole Victim: His knees are shot at by the Intelligence Division soldiers, and Campanella roasts him both figuratively and literally. Of course, he could have avoided all of this if he wasn't ruled by his selfish ambitions.
  • The Bus Came Back: Reappears in Cold Steel IV as the commander of an enhanced jaeger squad, after many out-of-universe years of not knowing what happened to him after The 3rd.
  • Butt-Monkey: To all of Ouroboros, who know that he's Campanella's personal chew toy. He also manages to get himself imprisoned by unintelligent monsters multiple times throughout the events of The 3rd. To add insult to injury, he loses an aerial dogfight to the Capua family, the Goldfish Poop Gang of FC.
  • Character Catchphrase: "I am an elite, damn it!"
  • Determinator: His boss fight in Cold Steel IV at Eryn has him fight against the party on foot despite them destroying his G-Apache.
  • Characterization Marches On: In FC, the reveal of his true nature and crimes was played entirely seriously, and his scheming forms a crucial part of Chapter 2's story. Then he returned in SC as a new recruit of Ouroboros, surrounded by far more dangerous individuals yet still thinking of himself as a genuine threat. Since then, he's consistently been portrayed as hopelessly out of his league and a strong contender for the ultimate Butt-Monkey of the series.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: Combined with The Starscream. During his days as Dalmore's steward, he secretly planned to usurp the mayor.
  • Enemy Mine: At the end of the 3rd, he helps the party invade Phantasmagoria because they're his only hope of escaping Phantasma.
  • Everyone Has Standards: In a sidequest in Cold Steel IV, he is unnerved when a curse-manipulated officer nearly guns down Marquis Hyarms and Count Egret for being traitors to the nation.
  • Future Copter: He eventually becomes the pilot of a G-Apache, one of Ouroboros' advanced Archaisms. In one of the arena matches in the 3rd, he'll directly pilot G-Apache rather than fight alongside it like he did in the prologue.
  • Formerly Fat: Implied, given the book he wrote.
  • Hidden Depths: He wrote and published a book called "From Fat to Fit" at some point.
  • I Fight for the Strongest Side!: Since Ouroboros practically rules the world from the shadows, Gilbert joins them in hopes of getting a slice of their pie. Needless to say, this plan isn't really working out for him.
  • I Surrender, Suckers: He has weaponized this as one of his Crafts. Humorously, it doesn't do much damage, but does debuff the target's strength - by being so pathetic that his enemies lose the will to hurt him. Alternatively, he throws a grenade while he's too close to the target, resulting in him being hit by the blast too.
  • Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain: He is often defeated in humiliating ways and is treated as a joke by enemies and allies alike despite being part of a nearly invincible N.G.O. Superpower.
  • Laughably Evil: His failures are amusing, though he'll still stick with Ouroboros in the hopes of gaining glory.
  • Leitmotif:
    • "I've Forgotten You" in The 3rd, used to represent his status as comic relief.
    • "Blue Stardust" plays once in Cold Steel IV and twice in Reverie, all during fights where Gilbert pilots his G-Apache.
  • Miles Gloriosus: He really does like to brag about how great he thinks he is.
  • Mook Promotion: Gilbert was somewhat forgettable in FC, but then gains minor prominence in the society and an expanded role in SC. In your first battle against him, he is barely more powerful than the mooks with him. By the third battle, he's definitively stronger than other jaegers, but still weaker than your individual party members.
  • Recurring Boss:
    • You fight Gilbert three times in SC. The first is a pseudo Hopeless Boss Fight (actually more of a challenge boss), the second is optional, and the final is in the final dungeon.
    • In The 3rd, he's the boss of the prologue alongside his G-Apache and he shows up in Sun Door 1 as a minigame boss.
    • He also shows up as a boss in Cold Steel IV and is battled three times, one of them being in an optional quest at Eryn.
    • In Reverie, he has two back-to-back boss fights in Cedric's Daydream episode, once on foot and once in his G-Apache.
  • Smug Snake: Most of his appearances are just a cycle of him getting smug about moving up in the world through illegal means, and then paying the price for his actions.
  • Sore Loser: In Reverie, he refuses to accept defeat against Cedric and attacks the latter with his G-Apache even after the Enforcer test is over. Cedric just ends up winning again anyways.
  • Support Party Member: What he tends to be in most of his fights. He's actually fairly good at it, too, since he's always surrounded by jaegers more competent than him who could use his buffs and healing, which helps to explain why he's ever in command of a unit. Really, if he stuck to his strengths as a buffer and a pilot, he'd be a lot more genuinely threatening.
  • Tank Goodness: His Dual Boss fight in Cold Steel IV at Eryn has him piloting his G-Apache and accompanying him is an automated Achtzen tank.
  • Time Bomb: His mines, which he'll set randomly on the map every few rounds.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: According to Dean Collins, Gilbert used to be a Wide-Eyed Idealist who wanted to use his academic knowledge for good. Then he met Mayor Dalmore, who taught him that political power and status are the only things that matter.
  • Villain Decay: He started out as a genuine Bitch in Sheep's Clothing who presented an affable face while conspiring with Mayor Dalmore to burn down and seize an orphanage. His scheming led to a jaeger assault that proved to be a genuine threat for Estelle and Joshua to handle. By the time of SC, he was clearly a Glory Hound who couldn't back up his egomaniacal gloating, but he remained a competent fighter who could keep Estelle on her toes. By the time of his return in Cold Steel IV, he's far down the totem pole in terms of the kinds of threats the heroes are facing, and even admits to his own jaegers that he's putting up a cocky front while secretly being terrified of people like Randy Orlando.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: He claims he's stronger than before each time you fight him but he's not really. However, his backup does tend to get progressively better.

    Thirteen Factories

Ouroboros's research and logistics arm, headed up by the Sixth Anguis. They are the source of much of the Society's archaisms and weapons.

Joerg Rosenberg

Voiced by: Yasuhiko Tokuyama
Appearances: Zero | Azure

Head meister of the Rosenberg Studios, a branch of the Thirteen Factories.

  • Continuity Cameo: He makes a brief appearance during the ending slideshow of the first Daybreak game.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He may be a member of the Thirteen Factories, but he disapproves of Novartis putting Renne through painful procedures to make her compatible with Pater-Mater.
  • Token Good Teammate: He's flat-out helpful to the SSS in Azure, even giving them advice on how to stop Ouroboros' plans in Crossbell, simply because Novartis' actions and the Red Constellation attack on Arc-en-Ciel were a step too far.

Type-γ
Type-γ II
Appearances: Azure (original models) | Cold Steel III (Type II) | Cold Steel IV (Type II) | Reverie (Type II)

The Gordias-class archaisms created by the Thirteen Factories, serving as successors to Pater Mater.

  • Fragile Speedster: Type-β is the fastest of the Aions, but its armor is also the thinnest.
  • Humongous Mecha: Ranging from around 16-20 meters, these robots are noticeably bigger than most of the others seen in the Trails Series.
  • Leitmotif: "Descent of the Aions" plays during the originals' first appearance in Azure.
  • Mighty Glacier: Type-γ is the largest of the Aions, and has notable power and defense, but doesn't seem to have much in the way of speed.
  • One-Hit Kill: In Cold Steel III, Type-α II takes several turns to charge up for Phantom Ender Gomorios, which inflicts All-Cancel and Vanish on the entire party. This cannot be survived no matter what buffs the party has.
  • Palette Swap In Cold Steel IV, the Salt Pillars have different colored variants of each successor Aion to serve as bosses. They include a black Type-γ II (for Estelle, Joshua, Agate, Tita, and Renne), a gold Type-β II (for Duvalie, Ennea, Ines, Xeno, and Leonidas), and a red Type-α II (for Aurelia, Victor, Vita, and Toval).
  • Sole Survivor: Type-α is the only one of the original Aions to survive Azure.
    • Likewise in Cold Steel IV, while Valimar and Ordine defeat Type-γ II and Type-β II with Union Slash: Deadly Domination, Type-α II is never dealt with.
  • Super Prototype: By the time of Cold Steel III, Novartis has made successor machines to all 3 of them, and they all serve as bosses for Rean in Valimar. However, while strong, without the Sept-Terrion to empower them, he is able to defeat them with the help of Kurt (for Type-γ II), Juna (for Type-β II), and Ash and Musse (for Type-α II).
  • The Unfought: The original Types β and γ. Type-β is destroyed by Kevin using his Stigma, whilst Type-γ was taken out alongside Pater Mater. Averted by Type-α, as Dieter pilots it against you in a boss fight. Incidentally, it's the only one that lives to fight another day.
