These are engines that come from other countries, but often can be found on Sodor. Spencer

A private engine owned by the Duke and Duchess of Boxford, Gordon's distant cousin, and a snob that none of the Sodor engines can stand.
- Aesop Amnesia: Much like Gordon and James, no matter what happens to him, he's back to his pompous self by the next episode.
- Always Someone Better: His debut episode emphasized how he is this to Gordon, being the fastest engine in the world and even his appearance is far more striking. That said, while he is physically better, mentally, well...
- Ambiguously Related: The A4s (Spencer) are cousins to the A1 and A3 classes (Gordon and Flying Scotsman), but the show never explicitly mentions oscreen that Gordon and Spencer are cousins, unlike Gordon and Scotsman where they mention they are.
- Attention Whore: Played up in "Welcome, Stafford!".
- Big Bad: In Hero of the Rails, where he is the main threat to Thomas helping Hiro.
- Breakout Villain: He had only one major appearance in his debut season but soon became a recurring antagonist as the go-to Always Someone Better for a plotline that required one, and served as the Big Bad for one of the movies.
- Break the Haughty: Almost every appearance of him involves this.
- British Stuffiness: In the UK dub, where he oozes smugness.
- Character Development: In "Spencer's VIP", Spencer learns how to be less of a show-off, and be more mindful of his job.
- Clashing Cousins: He and Gordon are LNER engines of different classes (Gordon being an LNER A1/A3 class while Spencer being an LNER A4 class) and both have a rivalry with each other.
- Early-Bird Cameo: He made a cameo in "Something Fishy" before making his official debut in "Gordon and Spencer".
- Evil Is Petty: His motivation for trying to get rid of Hiro in Hero of the Rails essentially boils down to him thinking that steam engines less grand than him don’t deserve to live.
- Hair-Trigger Temper: He gets angry really easy.
- Hated by All: Every single engine on Sodor, especially the main 8, hates him because of how much of a jerk he is. This is best shown in Hero of the Rails, where all the members of the Steam Team groan at his arrival and are bummed out about him staying on Sodor for the summer. Since then he has softened relatively and gets on a little better with others, even if he still often annoys them with his arrogance.
- Hate Sink: Both in-universe and out. He is rude, selfish, willing to scrap even his fellow steam engines, and unlike other haughty engines such as Gordon and James, has no redeeming qualities.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: Spencer spends the entirety of "Welcome, Stafford!" rushing through around the island and leaving Stafford to drain his battery. By the end of the episode, he runs out of water and Stafford has to push him to Knapford.
- Humiliation Conga: Goes through one in "Hero of the Rails" - in trying to investigate Thomas, he is verbally rebuffed by Emily; gets his funnel filled with slate by Mavis; is caught with Percy's mail trucks by James, Toby, and Thomas, which also gets him in trouble with the Fat Controller; then after catching Hiro and nearly getting him scrapped Gordon suddenly challenges him to a race and wins, and also gets him in trouble with the Duke and Duchess, Gordon's passengers. Then, after deciding to chase after Thomas to nurse his wrecked pride, he has an accident and ends up falling into the marshland when the bridge breaks under his weight; to add insult to this final injury, The Duke and Dutchess, now sick of his antagonistic antics, leave him there until Hiro is salvaged and fixed.
- Jaw Drop: In "The Afternoon Tea Express", after Stephen somehow manages to get scones and dairy, and still get back to the Earl's castle on time, Spencer's jaw drops in shock.
- Jerkass: Like Gordon, he tends to look down on smaller, slower engines. Unlike Gordon, he's a bit slow on the uptake on moving past this.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's does show it in a few episodes. In "Emily's Rubbish" as he was impressed with Whiff proving his worth in helping Emily move the rubbish trucks, and then in "Spencer's VIP", he even asks for the privilege to take the deputy minister home because he's learned from his mistake in showing off and asks if he could give him second chance.
- Large Ham: Especially in the US dub.
- Light Is Not Good: When compared to diesels, the steam engines are usually portrayed as friendly and reliable. Spencer, however, is regularly portrayed as an antagonist; a big-headed showoff that likes making the Sodor engines miserable. He outright reached villain status in Hero of the Rails, when he not only pestered and annoyed the Sodor engines, but also attempted to send Hiro to the smelter's yard, with no solid reason except to make Thomas miserable.
- Malicious Misnaming: He calls Stephen "Slow Coach".
- My God, What Have I Done?: "Spencer's VIP" lamenting his mistake of going too fast to the point of getting the Deputy Minster lost. It's what allowed him a second chance.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In "Spencer's VIP", Spencer's attempt to get the deputy minister to Knapford Station ahead of schedule results in him ending up in the wrong place when he goes too fast to watch the signals, and the deputy minister running late. He quickly regrets it.
- Never My Fault: In his debut episode, Gordon advises him to take on plenty of water so he can get the Duke and Duchess over Gordon's Hill for their party at Maron Station. Spencer ignores Gordon, claiming he already has plenty of water. Sure enough, Spencer runs out of water on Gordon's Hill, and when Gordon is sent to rescue Spencer, he asks him if he ran out of water. Spencer tells Gordon yes, but lies to him about having a leaky tank because he doesn't want to admit that he didn't listen to him.
- Not-So-Harmless Villain: In "Hero of the Rails" where he nearly gets Hiro scrapped.
- Pet the Dog: In "Spencer The Grand", he is humbled after getting lost in the fog, and helps Percy make his way back to the sheds.
- He also compliments Whiff in "Emily's Rubbish".
- The Rival: To Gordon, his distant cousin, and Thomas. Gordon is more to prove he's the fastest. For Thomas, however, he's more about making him miserable by getting Hiro scrapped.
- Sanity Ball: In "Snow Tracks", Spencer warns Gordon to slow down going through the snow, but to no avail. He also holds this in James' dream in "An Engine of Many Colours".
- Self-Disposing Villain: In Hero of the Rails, he is defeated only when he chases Thomas over a bridge that can take the latter’s weight but not his own.
- Shadow Archetype: To the other pompous tender engines, particularly Gordon. He's just as prideful and arrogant, but while the others have gained experience and made friends on Sodor, Spencer is an unpopular fool that looks his nose down on the others. Downplayed as his character softened slightly in later episodes.
- Smug Snake: More so than Gordon.
- Upper-Class Twit: A high-ranking steam engine with a nasty attitude to match.
Hiro
- Voiced by: Togo IgawaNumber: 51Basis: JNR Class D51
An old, wise engine who came from Japan many years ago. He debuted in Hero of the Rails, where Thomas found him hidden away in an old forest and had his friends help repair him. He has since made several minor appearances.
- The Ace: He's not called the "Master of the Railway" for nothing.
- Broken Ace: In "Hiro Helps Out", he tries telling other engines what to do when The Fat Controller is busy, only to cause more confusion and delay.
- But Now I Must Go:
- After setting things right at the end of Hero of the Rails, Hiro reveals that he misses his friends and homeland, and returns home with a big sendoff from his new friends.
- Even after he went back home, he returned in season 13. However, in "Kenji On the Rails Again", he leaves Sodor and the show for good, going back to Japan along with Kenji.
- Cool Old Guy: He's an old engine who was known as the Master of the Railway. The oldest standard gauge engine on the railway, but can still hold his own as a respectable heavy goods engine.
- Dark and Troubled Past: He was once popular in his homeland, and at some point, he was transferred to Sodor where he worked for many years. When he broke down due to age, he was put on a siding where he would wait until Sodor could get the parts needed to fix him. The parts never came, and he ended up being forgotten, with the siding becoming overgrown by the time Thomas and friends find him.
- Demoted to Extra: While he still gets the odd spotlight episode, his appearances are more sparse.
- Determinator: In Henry's Hero, he manages to deliver a massive quarry train to the docks on his own - a job originally for two engines - while dealing with a terrible case of bad coal.
- Gentle Giant: A large engine, but he is very humble and kind.
- I Choose to Stay: He came back inexplicably in season 13, and since then, he seems to have become a permanent part of the railway. It's implied that
the Japanese railways have modernized and all of his friends from his time have been scrapped during the years he was stuck on Sodor. He permanently leaves Sodor in "Kenji On the Rails Again". - Japanese Politeness: Hiro is from Japan, and could rival Edward as one of the kindest engines on Sodor. Maybe a little too kind.
- Let's Get Dangerous!: "That's it, no more Mr. Nice Engine! I am Master of the Railway!"
- Mythology Gag: According to Christopher Skala, Hiro was originally going to be blue. This was used as his main boiler color for his patchwork.
- Nice Guy: Doesn't have a mean bone in his body. Despite Spencer trying to expose him and get him scrapped, Hiro doesn't really hold it against him and still helps Spencer out after he gets into an accident. The one time he lost his cool was because of Diesel, and Diesel rightfully got told off for it.
- Noble Fugitive: A Japanese engine who wanted to be scrapped by Spencer, but survived.
- Not So Above It All: Even he tried vehemently to impress the deputy minister in "Spencer's VIP".
- Oh, Crap!: In Hero of the Rails, Hiro is understandably terrified when he hears Spencer whistling close by. Fortunately, James and Toby were there to chase Spencer away.
- Put on a Bus: Leaves Sodor for Japan in "Kenji On the Rails Again", and permanently this time around.
- Token Minority: An especially profitable one; Hiro proved to be a favorite in Japan almost immediately.
Stepney

A tank engine from the Bluebell Railway on the Island of Sodor that likes to be very busy at work. Stepney was stranded in a cold siding with his driver at a scrapyard, but was rescued from scrap by Rusty as the diesel was trying to find an engine for the Bluebell Railway. Stepney loves working at the railway and hangs out with Rusty whenever they pass by. He would later be invited to visit an work on the mainline after Sir Topham Hatt spoke with th manager.
- Artistic License – History: In real life, Stepney was saved by representatives of the Bluebell Railway and not Rusty.
- Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: He has not been seen since season 12.
- Flower Motifs: Stepney is associated with bluebells. His railway is called the Bluebell Railway, and he says "Bluebells forever!" in "Stepney Gets Lost".
- Nice Guy: He is always kind-hearted and enthusiastic.
- Noble Fugitive: He was going to be scrapped, but was rescued by Rusty.
- Put on a Bus to Hell: He was last seen getting hit by a sugar truck.
- Real-Person Cameo: Stepney is an actual locomotive.

A trio of oil and wood-burning steam engines. Bash, Dash and Ferdinand previously worked on the Mainland, but were relocated to Misty Island due to their poor behavior.
- Accidental Misnaming: Ferdinand calls The Fat Controller "boss", and he didn't take kindly of that.
- Bilingual Bonus: While "loco" is short for "locomotive", it also means "crazy" in Spanish. This suits the trio very well, as they are crazy locomotives.
- The Cameo: Ferdinand made a cameo in season 18.
- Character Catchphrase: Ferdinand's is "That's right!"
- Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: When Andrew Brenner took over, the Logging Locos disappeared due to the trio being universally-hated. Beyond Ferdinand making a cameo in the season 18 episode "Signals Crossed", it's as if they've been erased from reality. That, and Misty Island is now treated as a joke In-Universe.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Living in an environment without proper rules, authority, or society, Bash, Dash, and Ferdinand lived for fun, silly games and playing about in the chaotic, consequence-free Logging Camp and the dense Jobi forests of Misty Island. Often, they were easily distracted, reckless, and got very little work done and when they did work, it was in a particularly silly, wacky, or questionable manner.
- A Day in the Limelight: "Toby and Bash", "Emily and Dash", and "Gordon and Ferdinand".
- Eagleland: Type 2. They're loud and boorish.
- Finishing Each Other's Sentences: Bash and Dash, all the time. It's deconstructed in "Toby and Bash"; when Bash has to work with Toby for the day instead of Dash, has so much trouble finishing any of his sentences that Toby has to figure out what Bash is trying to say.
- Gentle Giant: Ferdinand.
- Identical Twin ID Tag: Bash's boiler, wheels, and lining are grey, while his cab and dome are yellow. Dash's colors are swapped. Also, Dash has freckles while Bash doesn't.
- Mighty Glacier: Ferdinand is the biggest and strongest of the trio, but also the slowest.
- Odd Name Out: Ferdinand's name doesn't rhyme with Bash and Dash.
- Reassigned to Antarctica: They were banished to Misty Island for misbehaving.
- Single-Minded Twins: So much so that when Bash and Dash are separated for too long, they get anxious and have trouble expressing themselves, as seen in Toby and Bash. Subverted for Dash, as he doesn't have issues speaking sentences.
- Theme Twin Naming: Bash and Dash's names rhyme.
- Trickster Twins: Bash and Dash.
- Youthful Freckles: Dash has some freckles on his face.
Connor and Caitlin

A pair of streamlined engines from the Mainland. Introduced in King of the Railway, they run the main express train between the two islands.
- A Day in the Limelight: Connor in "Cautious Connor", Caitlin in "Calm Down Caitlin".
- Always Someone Better: Caitlin was this to Emily in "Best Engine Ever", so much that Emily is left depressed from wishing she could be like her. It's subverted in the end, where Caitlin reveals that she wishes she had front buffers like Emily's and, as a streamlined engine, she could only pull coaches while Emily could pull a variety of trains.
- Butt-Monkey: Connor is this to Bill and Ben in "Bill or Ben?".
- Establishing Character Moment: In King of the Railway, they have a friendly race during their Sodor route time trials. They both speed past Gordon and Spencer (who are already racing each other) with little effort.
- Expy: Of Pip and Emma from The Railway Series.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: In the metaphorical sense, since they're technically not related. While they both love to race, Connor is more serious while Caitlin is more excitable. Connor has been shown to be reckless, however.
- Friendly Rival: Caitlin is overly friendly towards Gordon otherwise. He wishes she wasn't.
- Both of them are this to each other. They just love racing.
- Genki Girl: Caitlin takes a long time to wind down.
- Motor Mouth: Caitlin.
- Nervous Wreck: Connor becomes this in "Cautious Connor".
- Nice Guy: Both of them are kind-hearted engines.
- Oireland: They have Irish accents.
- Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Caitlin is painted pink, Connor is painted blue.
- The Rival: To both Gordon and Spencer.
- Shout-Out: Both have Irish accents in homage to the fact that the railways of their bases were built by Irish immigrants.
- Those Two Guys: They can often be seen together.

Gator

Introduced in Tale of the Brave, Gator is an unusual green engine from Colombia, with sloping boilers working on Sodor temporarily.
- Aesop Enforcer: He is this in Tale of the Brave, where he promotes the bravery moral.
- All of the Other Reindeer: The other engines are initially shocked by his appearance. It's not as intense as other examples in the series, as the other engines quickly warm up to him, but Gator still gets frustrated over it.
- Animal Motif: An alligator motif. He resembles an alligator thanks to his sloping boiler.
- Backstory of the Day: His backstory he shares with Percy at the docks represents the overarching theme of Tale of the Brave.
- Berserk Button: His malfunctioning lamp, being bossed around, and being mistaken for a monster.
- Beware the Nice Ones: As nice as he is, if he's pushed enough, he will retaliate. In Toad's Bright Idea, he gets fed up with Toad's pestering to the point where he abandons Toad in the middle of the line and tries to complete his journey without him.
- Big Brother Mentor: Becomes this to Percy.
- The Bus Came Back: Returns in "Long Lost Friend".
- But Now I Must Go: At the end of Tale of the Brave, he's sent away to work on another railway.
- Determinator: As proven by his backstory. However, this trait makes his trip with Toad in "Toad's Bright Idea" a bit rocky—while Gator is all about getting the job done quickly and simply endure the risks, Toad wants to get the job done safely.
- Embarrassing Nickname: Averted. He quite likes his nickname.
- Face Your Fears: In his backstory, he had to cross a high bridge in a mountainous region to get urgent supplies to a village, despite his fear of heights. He also encourages Percy to do this.
- Ideal Hero: Percy comes to see him as one.
- Ironic Fear: He's terrified of heights, despite being designed to work in high, mountainous regions.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: His real name is Gerald, but no one calls him that.
- Put on a Bus: After "Long Lost Friend", he disappeared from the show entirely.
- Percussive Maintenance: The only way to get his lamp working properly is for the driver to knock it, though later this stops working.
Samson

A strong, though oddly shaped tank engine that comes from the mainland to help out on Sodor.
- Acquired Situational Narcissism: Any time he's given a job, he acts as if he's done it his whole life.
- Big Ol' Eyebrows: Has the thickest eyebrows of the tank engines.
- Break the Haughty: Three of the four episodes he's featured in involve this.
- Butt-Monkey: In his debut episode, he is the subject of many of the engines' teasing for going to the Blue Mountain Quarry by mistake.
- Can't Take Criticism: He's too prideful to take other engines' advice that he's making a mistake.
- Character Catchphrase: "Samson here, at your service!"
- Expy: Possibly of Neil from The Railway Series. Both are green Neilson & Co. open cab 0-4-0 locomotives, and are noted for being quite unattractive.
- Face Your Fears: He faces his fear of fireworks in order to get back home in "Samson and the Fireworks".
- Fatal Flaw: Pride.
- Gonk: Good gracious.
- Implausible Deniability: In "Saving Time", Samson blatantly denies taking too many trucks as Thomas points out to him.
- Know-Nothing Know-It-All: His defining trait.
- Leave Me Alone!: His attitude in Samson At Your Service. Embarrassed with a mistake he had made the previous night, he tries to do a job while tuning out everyone's teasing. Of course, he also tunes out their warnings that he's making a new mistake, and doesn't realize his error until too late.
- Meaningful Name: He is named after the biblical character Samson, who is known for being powerful.
- Once Done, Never Forgotten: After taking a misroute into the Blue Mountain Quarry one night, he became the frequent subject of playful teasing. When he starts acting foolish again however, he is convinced he is still being laughed at, failing to notice the other engines are just trying to warn him of his mistake.
- Sarcasm-Blind: In Samson At Your Service, he takes Bill and Ben's blatantly sarcastic remarks about his usefulness as genuine praise.
- Upper-Class Twit: A mainland engine with a snobby attitude.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: The Season 22 episode “Samson and the Fireworks” reveals he has a fear of fireworks.
The Flying Scotsman
- "Flying Scotsman, coming through!"Voiced by: Rufus JonesNumber: LNER 4472Basis: The real Flying Scotsman (a London and North Eastern Railway A3) 4-6-2Built: 1923
Introduced properly in The Great Race, the Flying Scotsman is Gordon's brother from the mainland. He was the first locomotive to officially reach 100 mph.
- Adaptational Jerkass: He seemed relatively respectful in his few speaking roles in The Railway Series, but he's much more pompous in the TV series. Justified as the fear of scrapping is gone in the recent series.
- Annoying Younger Sibling: Technically, he is the younger sibling in The Railway Series, as Gordon was a prototype locomotive. He likes to tease Gordon and call him Little Brother, despite Gordon's protests.
- Artistic License – History: The TV series incarnation of Flying Scotsman has smoke deflectors, a double chimney, and his number printed on his cab, yet he still has two tenders. The real Flying Scotsman has had all of these features, but not all at the same time. Oh, and his smoke deflectors can slide forward for some reason.
- Ascended Extra: Meant to be a one-off in the TV series, but he eventually got promoted to the recurring cast, starring in Big World! Big Adventures! and season 22.
- Big Brother Bully: He considers himself to be the big brother, even though he's actually younger than Gordon, and is a complete jerk to him.
- Big Brother Instinct: Subverted. He tried to warn Gordon about his boiler's problems, and when Gordon ultimately broke down as a result, Flying Scotsman did look like he wanted to help Gordon...before he realized he was still in the race, and hurried away.
- Big Ol' Eyebrows: More thicker and longer than Gordon.
- Break the Haughty: In "Confusion Without Delay", when Rebecca chews him out for teasing Gordon and also points out that Gordon is actually older than him.
- Deadpan Snarker: He makes plenty of remarks to rile up Gordon, including calling him "Little Brother" despite them being the same size, or Gordon technically being older by Railway Series canon.
- Demoted to Extra: An unusual example—he was supposed to appear in Season 3, in accordance with his appearance in the Railway Series, but they didn't have the budget to complete the model, so only his tenders and cab were shown. The problem with this is that the episode causes Gordon to completely not recognize him. He made it to the CGI series, though.
- Full-Name Basis: Everyone always calls him "Flying Scotsman".
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: When he noticed Gordon was starting to suffer from going so fast without his safety valve in the Great Race, he tried to warn Gordon. Too bad it didn't work.
- Last of His Kind: He and Gordon are the last of the LNER A1-A3 Pacific steam locomotives...at least in the Railway Series. It is unknown if it applies to the television continuity.
- The Nicknamer: Tends to refer to Gordon as "little brother".
- Non-Indicative Name: Contrary to what his name might suggest, he is actually from England, not Scotland.
- Pet the Dog: After the events of The Great Race, he tries to cheer Gordon up, and reveals that his opinion on Sudrian engines has improved. And in his first scene, he gives Thomas genuine encouragement.
- Sole Survivor: Subverted, he is not the last member of his class since Gordon is still active.
- Upper-Class Twit: He doesn't think particularly highly of Sodor's engines. That being said, rather than hurling insults in their faces like Gordon or Spencer, he talks calmly and dismissively at at the same time.
Big World! Big Adventures! and Season 22:
These are engines that appear in Big World! Big Adventures! and/or season 22. Yong Bao, Ashima, Shane, and Rajiv were originally from The Great Race, but they were promoted to the cast of season 22. Ashima
- "Just because we're well-painted doesn't mean we can't do anything else."Voiced by: Tina DesaiBasis: Nilgiri Mountain Railway Class XBuilt: 1914, 1920, 1925, 1952, 2011-2014
Introduced in The Great Race, Ashima is a beautifully-painted tank engine from India, taking part in the Shunting Competition of The Great Railway Show. After being stranded on the Island of Sodor after her rail ferry leaves without her after docking by mistake at Brendam Docks instead of the UK, she acts as a voice of support to Thomas with convincing him to just be himself rather than try to be anything else, resulting in her and Thomas developing a good friendship that remained after they parted ways following Ashima returning to Sodor with Thomas, Emily, and the other Sudrian engines before returning home to India.
- Aesop Enforcer: In The Great Race, she taught Thomas the Be Yourself moral.
- Bait-and-Switch: Ashima's beautiful livery makes her a perfect candidate for the Best Dressed Engine competition.....but she ends up competing in the shunting challenge. She even lampshades this.
- The Bus Came Back: Ashima returned to the series in Season 22. Her story when reuniting with Thomas in her homeland of India alongside Rajiv is introducing him to some of India's culture, such as the Indian movie business, elephants helping in the rail yards, and the rarest of India's animals, the tigers.
- But Now I Must Go: Once the Great Railway Show is over, Ashima tells Thomas she needs to catch her ferry to return home to India.
- Costume Porn:

- All of the Other Reindeer: He was constantly bullied by the other engines, according to his backstory.
- Animal Motif: Tigers. In his backstory, he was fascinated by a tiger and followed it around, which led to his big rescue. Painted on his tender is a tiger which incites a sense of awe and admiration. Like Yong Bao, the tiger is full of life and embodies the spirit of being driven to achieve and make progress.
- Ascended Extra: Originally appeared as a minor character in The Great Race. Becomes more prominent in Big World! Big Adventures!, featuring heavily in the marketing for the new movie and series.

- Foil: To Rajiv. Both are nice-looking Indian engines. While Rajiv is boastful, Noor Jehan is more humble.

- Blue Is Heroic: He's a deep shade of blue, and one of the most reliable engines on the railway.
- Cassandra Truth: He warns Thomas not to take his express line, but Thomas, mistaking him for being arrogant like Gordon, decides to take it anyway. Gustavo's express line is electric only, so with no coal or water stops for miles, Thomas soon runs out of fuel and ends up stranded.
- Expy: He is a Brazilian electric version of Gordon. Both are big, blue express engines with the number 4, and Gustavo even says some of Gordon's catchphrases in Portuguese. This ends up being a Downplayed Trope; while he shares many of Gordon's traits, he's less arrogant and more empathetic.

Introduced in The Great Race, Vinnie uses his status as a big North American tender engine to bully smaller engines like Thomas and Philip, until he meets his match against Thomas and Ashima and gets derailed, crashing into an electrical tower that falls on top of himself. He competed in the Strength Competition against Australia's Shane, Germany's Frieda, Henry, and possibly Hiro. It is possible he was the winner based on being farthest ahead when the competition was last seen.
- Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: Vinnie has guard rails over his face. This makes him look like a football player, which fits him because of his strength and competitive nature.
- Big Bad: Of The Great Race, where he is the only competitor to be a complete Jerkass.
- The Bully: He is shown to be this when he arrives on Sodor, telling Thomas to get out of the way and calling him a shrimp. He later bullies Phillip when he gets in his way at the Great Railway Show, but is stopped by Thomas and Ashima before he gets the chance to derail him.
- The Bus Came Back: He makes a cameo in Big World! Big Adventures!.
- Cheaters Never Prosper: Vinnie tried to cheat to win the Great Railway Show, but fails and gets into a karmic accident because of it.
- Dirty Coward: Despite his mean personality, Vinnie is shown to be a coward when faced with a problem bigger than him, as shown with his accident at the Great Railway Show.
- Eagleland: Definitely the Boorish variant. Vinnie is a huge jerk, a cheater, is reckless.
- Humble Pie: Vinnie often gets served this in the supplementary Great Race Friends Near and Far videos. In Gina the Smart Steam Engine, Gina and Shane are fed up with his bullying and teach him a lesson by making him believe he will be racing Gina, but then he ends up shooting forward into a crate of watermelons. In Vinnie is Back in America, Vinnie brags about how strong he is. The little dockyard engines get back at him by adding lots of trucks to his train, making Vinnie's load impossible to pull by himself.
- Jerk Jock: Vinnie is big and strong, a competitor in the Great Railway Show, and the guard rails on his face look like a football helmet. He's also a huge bully to everyone.
- Laser-Guided Karma: His bullying of Philip for angering him comes back to bite him when Thomas and Ashima hold him back to allow Philip to escape, leaving Vinnie to derail due to the switches being set against him and crash headlong into an electrical tower. He felt humbled after that.Vinnie: (To Thomas and Ashima) Hey! Are you gonna get me outta here, or what?
- Light Is Not Good: He makes the likes of Gordon and even Spencer look like saints, being a steam engine whose an all out aggressive bully. He even swaps around the usual rivalry with diesels, as he is shown antagonising the diminutive and good-natured Phillip.
- Malicious Misnaming: Vinnie calls Philip "Shortie" and Thomas "Shrimp".
Ivan

Introduced in The Great Race, Ivan is the only International Engine to be a diesel locomotive, representing Mother Russia at The Great Railway Show as he competes in the Shunting Challenge against Thomas, Ashima, Italy's Gina, and Brazil's Raul.
- Hidden Heart of Gold: He may look mean, but that's not really who he is. He's really a Nice Guy, and a comedian who will put a smile on everyone's face.
- Nice Guy: Ivan is charismatic and good-natured. In Ivan's Chilly Way Home, he helps to push two steam engines to the station and gets some coal for their fireboxes, even though it uses up all his diesel fuel. He also helps Frieda learn to smile more.
- Primary-Color Champion: Ivan's livery has red and blue, and his running board is yellow.
- Token Minority: The only diesel competing in the Shunting Challenge.
Marvelous Machinery and Season 24:

- The Ace: Is both the fastest engine on Sodor and in the world.
- But Now I Must Go: At the end of "Kenji on the Rails Again", he has to go back to Japan alongside Hiro.
- Distressed Dude: Gets kidnapped by Baz and Bernie as their getaway train to steal Ruth's invention plans before being saved by Thomas with assistance from Sir Topham Hatt, Sir Robert Norramby, Ruth, Gordon and Rebecca.
- Fatal Flaw: Like Gustavo before him, Kenji can only run on electrified railways, hence the need for the Estate Railway to temporarily set up electic cables to host him. Baz and Bernie find this out the hard way when he has no power on the Main Line and starts slowing down.
- Genre Savvy: Upon meeting Thomas, he is quick to recognize him as the engine who travelled around the world.
- Japanese Politeness: Incredibly kind, polite, and humble.
- Token Minority: The sole non-European engine to be featured in World of Tomorrow.
Sonny

A well-tank engine introduced in Season 24.
- All of the Other Reindeer: In "Sonny's Second Chance", most of the engines still don't trust him after he is given a second chance, and continue to call him a thief, even when he saves James from some watermelons that fell out of a crate Cranky was carrying (Salty was the only one who had witnessed the event). When he saves Diesel from falling into a pit, they see Sonny as the kind and useful engine he has become.
- The Atoner: He is offered a second chance by Thomas and Sir Topham Hatt to make up for his actions that lead to Ruth's plans being stolen. The episode "Sonny's Second Chance" focuses on him making up for everything that happened.
- Being Evil Sucks: Working under Baz and Bernie is miserable for him.
- The Dog Bites Back: Baz and Bernie's abuse of him leads him to refuse to be their getaway vehicle. This leads them to improvise with Kenji.
- Forced into Evil: He can't necessarily help doing evil, since he's owned by a pair of crooks. After he refuses to be their getaway vehicle anymore, Baz and Bernie tie his regulator open to make it look like he's running away with Ruth's stolen hovercar plans. This distracts everyone long enough that they can steal Kenji.
- Good Feels Good: Being called "really useful" by the Earl brings a genuine smile to his face.
- Heel–Face Turn: Was initially owned by Baz and Bernie and used to help steal inventions before he refuses to help them and sides with Thomas to stop them. He ends up becoming one of Sir Topham Hatt's engines at the end.
- "Metaphor" Is My Middle Name: In "Sonny's Second Chance", Sir Topham Hatt tells him that he will only allow him to stay and work on Sodor if he can prove himself to be a trustworthy and useful engine. Sonny tells him that "Trustworthy" and "Useful" are his middle names.
- Verbal Backspace: When Thomas mentions the pair of cooks he travels with, Sonny thinks he said "crooks", leading to this exchange:Thomas: "Those two cooks are probably wondering where you are!"Sonny: "What? What do you mean, crooks?"Thomas: "No...I said cooks."Sonny: "Oh...oh! Yeah, cooks! I mean, that's what I meant, not crooks."
Duchess

A tender engine who lives on the mainland, introduced in Season 24.
- Cool Crown: While she doesn't wear a crown like Rajiv, she has a crown symbol on her bufferbeam. This is what tips the Fat Controller off that she's not an ordinary engine.
- Gold and White Are Divine: She's painted white with gold lining, and belongs to the Royal Family.
- Gold-Colored Superiority: She has gold lining, and is the personal engine for The British Royal Family.
- Humiliation Conga: She embarasses herself several times in front of Thomas trying to get ready for her journey to London. And forgets to have her safety valve checked, leading to her breaking down on the way there.
- In-Series Nickname: Her full name is "The Duchess of Loughborough", but she prefers just "Duchess".
- King Incognito: When she's not presently serving the Royal Family, the crown emblem is removed from her bufferbeam, making her look like an ordinary engine.
- Modest Royalty: The only thing giving away that she's the personal engine for The British Royal Family is the crown symbol on her bufferbeam, which is removed when she's not in service; she looks like an ordinary engine otherwise.
- Really Royalty Reveal: She's introduced as a seemingly ordinary engine getting ready for a long journey to London. Neither Thomas nor the Fat Controller realize she's the Royal Engine until they help her get to London and see the gold crown that had been added to her bufferbeam.
- Remembered Too Late: While she's getting ready for her journey, she realizes she might be forgetting to do something, but can't recall what it is. By the time she does, she's already broken down on the main line.
- Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Has thick eyelashes and lips, as expected for a female engine.
- Upper-Class Twit: Thomas initially sees her as this due to her early behavior, but the two start seeing eye to eye when he learns that just like him, she's about to take a long journey and is nervous about it.
- Youthful Freckles: She has light freckles on her cheeks.

A pair of wood-burning tender engines who work on The Eucalyptus Railway in Brazil introduced in season 24.
- Fatal Flaw: Being wood-burning engines, long-distance journeys are more difficult for them. They ended up running out of wood and have to rely on the wood on their trucks/freight cars to keep going until they end up running out.
- Goal in Life: They both aspire to travel the world just like Thomas does.
- Half-Identical Twins: A rare case for twins in the series. Marcio is male and Marcia is female.
- Palette Swap: while both engines are boilers are painted green with bronze lining, Marcia has a green cab and black tender while Marcio has a black cab and green tender.
- Single-Minded Twins: They are always talking together in perfect sync. Even when introducing themselves.
- Thomas: Do you two always talk at the same time?Marcia and Marcio: No.....Yes *bursts out in laughter*
- Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Marcia has thick eyelashes and lips, as expected for a female engine.
- Theme Twin Naming: Both names sound almost exactly the same. Just with a different vowel at the end. This can get awfully confusing when they introduce themselves.
