Aether Heroes

    Oda

Oda the Guardian / Oda the Aegis

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/odaguardian.png
No, not THAT Oda.
Click here to see Oda the Aegis
Oda was born in a faraway land, shipwrecked, and raised on a remote island temple. He's ventured in search of spellstones as a pilgrimage for his order and honor.
A devout member of the First Order, Oda is a stoic and honorable monk. By clearing his Hero Upgrade mission and delving into his trauma, he can be upgraded to Oda the Aegis.
  • Balance Buff: The 2022 hero rework gave him access to Imbue All Vengeance even as Oda the Guardian, and replaced his weak Barrier with the more useful Heal. Oda the Aegis lost his Enhance Vengeance, but his Imbue Vengeance and Heal were made much stronger.
  • Bald Mystic: He's a member of the First Order (no, not THAT First Order), the monks of the Seastone Citadel. He's also bald.
  • Barrier Warrior: Prior to the 2022 hero rework, Oda the Guardian had Barrier instead of Heal. Oda's Shadow, however, keeps the Barrier, and it's a fairly strong one to boot.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: In the Void Plane, Bluefire temporarily "convinces" him that he should seek "peace" through the silence of the Void. The player must Beat the Curse Out of Him.
  • Combat Medic: Capable of healing his cards, just like Elyse. Unlike Elyse the Truestriker, his Heal as Oda the Aegis only affects one card, but it heals more HP than her Heal All.
  • Counter-Attack: His specialty is imbuing all the player's cards with Vengeance, dealing a bit of damage back whenever they're hit by a direct attack. Prior to the Balance Buff, Oda the Guardian could only deal Vengeance damage if he was attacked directly.
  • Flying on a Cloud: Gains his own personal storm cloud to ride on after he becomes Oda the Aegis.
  • Glowing Eyes: His eyes are constantly shining with a faint golden light.
  • He Knows About Timed Hits: One of the very first opponents the player fights, Oda pitches in to help with the tutorial level along with the Elaria Captain and the Raven.
  • Initiation Ceremony: During the Seastone Citadel arc, he undergoes a rite to become the Keeper of the Seastone Citadel's artifact by fending off the waves of undead who appear in the magic circle.
  • Not So Above It All: During the first Frigore expedition, he ends up doing the same vapor-collecting dance as Malchior.
  • Not So Stoic: During his Hero Upgrade mission, he becomes terrified at the thought of dipping his toes in the water because doing so will attract the sea serpent who shipwrecked him to his location. Much later in the game, he cries Tears of Joy when he sees what he thinks is his Order restored to life, but they disappear soon after Kensho reveals it was an illusion.
  • The Paladin: Fits the role to a T, being a monk known for his defensive abilities and working for the forces of good.
  • Properly Paranoid: He's afraid of large bodies of water because the sea serpent that shipwrecked him as a child told him it'd hunt him down if he ever set foot in the ocean again. Sure enough, the very same serpent is the final enemy in his Hero Upgrade mission.
  • Status Buff: His Signature Move is giving every card Vengeance. Prior to his Balance Buff, Oda the Aegis had "Enhance Vengeance", which would make one random card's Vengeance a little stronger than the others.
  • The Stoic: Very quiet and calm. During Aria's invasion at the very beginning of the game, he keeps himself sane by meditating.
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: During the (unavailable) Frigore expedition, he's the Straight Man to Malchior's Wise Guy.
  • Tears of Joy: In the Stormy Seastone Citadel campaign, Oda bursts into tears when he sees his Order alive and well, although this quickly gives way to grief when he reaches out and they dissipate back into Elementals again. Once Kensho is freed from elemental possession, he not only cries, but gives the man a Bear Hug.
  • Trauma Button: During his Hero Upgrade mission, Oda stares out at the ocean and thinks back to the shipwreck he survived as a boy. The events have left him afraid of going in the ocean.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: All he has covering his toned upper body is a green sash. It's gone as Oda the Aegis.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He's afraid of large bodies of water, to the point where even the thought of dipping his toes in the ocean turns him into a sweating mess. Turns out he's not afraid of the water itself, but the sea serpent who shipwrecked him.

    Yuriel

Yuriel the Owl Mystic / Yuriel the Manashifter

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yurielowlmystic.png
He's a hoot and a half.
Click here to see Yuriel the Manashifter
The Grand Library of the Aether has been curated by the Owl Mystics for hundreds of years. Their knowledge is accumulated in Yuriel through their ancestral bloodline.
A stuffy and rather pompous owl librarian from the city of Luminis. Initially a recurring thorn in the heroes' sides, he comes around after Samael's defeat, and by introducing him to Orgoth the Hex Fist, he can be upgraded to Yuriel the Manashifter.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: In the fourth Halloween Episode, he notes that Pumpking's curse has "no basis", despite being a Magic Librarian conversant with all sorts of spells. To his credit, he tries to invoke Pumpking not long afterwards to test whether or not the story is legit.
  • Archangel Uriel: While merely a mystical owl instead of an angel, his ties to Samael make it clear that this is his namesake.
  • The Atoner: Downplayed. After butting heads with the player a few times in Luminis and going along with a Brainwashed and Crazy Samael's genocidal plans for the Chaos, he expresses a hope that they will let bygones be bygones and let him show them around Skyhaven's Mystic Library.
  • Balance Buff: The 2022 hero rework changed Yuriel's skillset rather drastically. Yuriel the Owl Mystic went from Enhance Armor and Heal All Aether to Imbue Ward and Imbue Aether Nullify, while Yuriel the Manashifter went from Imbue Aether Nullify, Enhance Armor, and Heal All Aether to Imbue All Ward and Enhance All Armor.
  • Bearer of Bad News: He's the one who has to tell Queen Leyla that the Goblins have bombed Beetleton Bunker.
  • Bookworm: As you'd expect from a Magic Librarian, he loves to read and often scours the city of Luminis for rare and collectible books.
  • Boxed Crook: After everything that happened with Samael, Leyla considers pardoning him, as he is too valuable to simply arrest... but on the condition that he give her intelligence on Reks's next move.
  • Counterspell: With his magic, Yuriel can give a random card a weak Ward every turn, which will let it shrug off magical attacks like Bolt or Frostbreath. Yuriel the Manashifter extends this protection to his entire deck.
  • Fantastic Racism: Yuriel dislikes the Chaos faction to the point of dismissing their entire school of magic as "the dark arts". Furthermore, he seems all too willing to help Samael out in his genocidal schemes, although this could be the Void's influence talking.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: Before the 2022 hero rework, the bulk of Yuriel's skillset only worked on Aether cards. This made a great deal of sense because he was indifferent towards the Wyld and an outright Fantastic Racist against the Chaos.
  • Gate Guardian: He's this for the City of Luminis, fought at the end of "The Glowing Grove" before entering the city. Once the heroes make it there anyway, he's pissed, and decides to fight them a second time.
  • Magic Librarian: A curator of the Grand Library, Yuriel is knowledgeable in several forms of magic, and he uses a bit of it on cards in his deck. Yuriel the Manashifter, his upgraded form, is much better at it.
  • The Medic: Prior to the 2022 Hero rework, he had the best healing of any playable hero, with the caveat that it only worked on Aether cards.
  • Noblewoman's Laugh: He laughs with a "hoo hoo hoo". Justified as he is an owl.
  • Number Two: He's at Samael's beck and call. And since Samael is evil, this makes him The Dragon.
  • The Owl-Knowing One: A wise owl who serves as caretaker for the Grand Library of the Aether. Through further study, he can master "Manashifting" and become a much more powerful Hero.
  • Owls Ask "Who?": When he first appears, he asks, "whoooo goes there?" before ordering the party to turn back. It's something of a Verbal Tic, and even extends to his laugh.
  • Pet the Dog: In direct contrast to his actions towards Orgoth detailed in Profiling below, they apparently patched things up in time to stop the Goblins' dragon army in the Salt Wastes. Yuriel even calls him an "old friend".
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: Defied, at least on the "politically incorrect" part. As of the showdown with Reks, he's actively working together with Orgoth, a Chaos-aligned orc.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: In his earliest appearances, he was a rather smug prick who persistently opposed the heroes whenever possible, and was quite openly prejudiced against the Chaos. His bigotry goes away around the time that he stops being an antagonist.
  • Profiling: During his Hero Upgrade mission, he immediately assumes that Orgoth is up to no good because he's with the Chaos, and doesn't take kindly to his prejudices being challenged. He gets what he deserves.
Orgoth: Woah there, no need to get the guard involved here. I have no problem with the Aether. We just came for supplies.
Yuriel: Out of my way! No matter what you say, the Chaos always bring trouble with them!
  • Scary Librarian: Implied. Yuriel the Manashifter's description states that his newly strengthened magic has helped him collect a lot of late fines.
  • Situational Sword: He can imbue a random card with Nullify each turn, but this only works on Aether cards. Yuriel the Manashifter has a different example — he strengthens the Armor of all cards every turn, but this won't work on cards that don't already have Armor as a skill.
  • Smug Snake: Acts quite stuffy and arrogant, and is very persistent at antagonizing the heroes all throughout the Luminis map no matter how many times he gets his ass handed to him. It's implied his Holier Than Thou attitude is a common trait among the Aether.
  • Spell Book: As you'd expect from a Magic Librarian, he owns all sorts of mystical tomes. During the Skyhaven campaign, the player can collect "Word Eaters", small spirits that grant even stronger magic to these books and let the player take advantage of them. He also discovers one during his Hero Upgrade mission that teaches him Manashifting, which permanently strengthens his magic.
  • Status-Buff Dispel: Yuriel can prevent up to two Status Buffs from working per turn by giving one card Nullify. Prior to the 2022 hero rework he could only do this as a Legendary hero, but now he can only do it in his base form.
  • Support Party Member:
    • His tomes grant a variety of bonuses in Skyhaven and Return to Luminis, including Bolting the enemy deck and granting all your cards extra Armor and Nullify.
    • Yuriel himself becomes this in the Gladius Arena, where he can cast Barrier over your entire deck as long as you give him Gladius Coins. Notably, he doesn't need to be your Hero to do so.
  • Useless Useful Spell: "Enhance all Armor" would be a great spell in heavy defensive decks. Unfortunately, most cards have a high enough base Attack that the Armor usually only shaves off a few points of damage, even when enhanced. You have to actively try to take advantage of this, and compared to other heroes using Yuriel is usually not to your benefit.

    Samael (ALL SPOILERS UNMARKED)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/samaelspellstone.png
Angel, he ain't.
Samael is the powerful and stoic leader of the Aether faction of magic. Don't ask him about the difference between bird wings and angel wings.
A cold-hearted angel who has the ear of the Queen of Skyhaven herself. But even his high position can't save him from the Void, which has twisted him into a mad, genocidal villain with a lust for ever-greater power! He gets better, but it's tough going...
  • Balance Buff: Subverted. He was reworked drastically as part of a blanket buff to all heroes in early 2022, and lost two of the skills he was known for (Imbue All Armor and Empower All Angel) in favor of Imbue All Legion. However, other heroes received much more drastic buffs than he did, leaving him Overshadowed by Awesome. (It could have been worse — before player feedback was taken into account, Samael would have been reduced to Imbue All Valor and Enhance Legion.)
  • Berserk Button: According to his description, he really doesn't like comparing bird wings with angel wings. The postgame reveals this is the subject of considerable academic debate In-Universe.
  • Big Bad: Of the first arc, at least. He's secretly planning to use the Heart of Blue Fire to destroy the Chaos faction once and for all.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Rescues you from certain doom in Return to Elaria, right when it seems Atlas has the entire situation under his control.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Considering the Void's toxic influence on anything that gets too close and Samael's later horror at the thought of anyone getting their hands on Void anything, it's likely that the Void escalated his prejudice against the Chaos to genocidal levels rather than any inherent evil in him.
  • Celestial Paragons and Archangels: A high-ranked angel who serves as leader of the Aether. In the game's code, he's labelled "seraph".
  • Character Development: Over the course of the game's story, he goes from a closed-minded Aether supremacist to a more level-headed leader who applies his own high standards to himself as much as he does others.
  • Chick Magnet: He's quite popular with the ladies of Skyhaven, who swarm him while Yuriel is trying to talk to the Queen.
  • Cold Equation: Suggests outright murdering General Garrick as a preventative measure to stop the spread of the Void. Garrick agrees.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Declares Elyse, Ursurio, and the player a Persona Non Grata from the city of Luminis... all because they tried to warn him about the Void. He was likely trying to throw them off the scent of his Evil Plan.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: So prideful that he becomes enraged and attacks the player when he meets them again at Frigore, claiming he could have freed himself from the Void.
  • Evil Is Hammy: As he prepares to draw energy from the Heart of Blue Fire, he drops his calm demeanor and embraces his inner ham.
Samael: PETTY MORTALS, BOW BEFORE THE GREATNESS THAT IS MY POWER!
  • Ex-Big Bad: Following his first defeat, Samael wises up and realizes that the Void is too dangerous to be harnessed. From that point, he becomes the most militantly focused on destroying it.
  • Fantastic Racism: Coldly dismisses the heroes when he hears that Aria, although corrupted by the Void, was a Chaos mage. He even sics Yuriel on them. His Evil Plan basically boils down to wiping them all out with the Heart of Blue Fire.
Samael: The Chaos have always been a dangerous and unpredictable faction, outsider. Begone, your kind are no longer welcome.
  • Final Solution: Yuriel reveals that Samael plans to use the Heart of Blue Fire to rid himself of the Chaos permanently. It's later implied that he would be just as big a threat to the Wyld, although this is not elaborated on further. As heinous as this sounds, however, Samael's actions afterwards seem to imply he was under the Void's control the whole time.
  • The Grinch: In the very first Christmas mission, Samael is visited by the "spirits of time" because he's a curmudgeon who openly hates the holiday. Rather unexpected for an angel.
Samael: Bah! Away from me, merry fools!
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Has a pair of seemingly fully blue eyes, befitting his cool, stoic personality.
  • Knight Templar: Very cold and stoic, Samael is willing to do what it takes to realize his wishes no matter the cost. It's implied that the Void was able to take this tendency of his and magnify it, producing the genocidal maniac seen at the end of the first arc.
  • Light Is Not Good: A powerful archangel secretly harboring genocidal ambitions against the Chaos. It's downplayed in his later appearances, which downgrade him to more of a cold-hearted Knight Templar.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: "Samael" — not "Samuel" — roughly translates to "the Poison of God". The real Archangel Samael from Jewish mythology is a destructive angel commonly identified with Satan.
  • Nerf: As outlined in Balance Buff above, Samael lost considerable footing in the metagame after other options became available. His Imbue All Legion was then nerfed further in June 2022, as players began to fear cards such as Alyel who could take too much advantage of it.
  • No Man Should Have This Power: Once confronted Leyla over her desire to study Dr. Oppenhinder's technology, which opened the Void. Considering his experience, he's right to argue with her.
  • No-Sell: He's immune to Atlas's Compelling Voice as a result of exposure to the Void.
  • One-Winged Angel: It's never shown in the game proper, but an unused card based on Samael could transform into a version of him with four white wings, alabaster skin, glowing eyes, and an angry scowl. You can still see it during the boss battle with Solaron, whose special card "Solaron's Sentinel" uses art of this form of Samael.
  • Pre-Final Boss: While not a true boss, Samael isn't the last enemy fought in the Void. That honor goes to the Void Abomination, which he accidentally releases in an attempt to get at the Heart of Blue Fire.
  • Recurring Boss: Fought as the penultimate opponent of the Void, reappears in the Center of the Void, and comes back a third time in Frigore.
  • Reformed, but Not Tamed: He may be on the side of the heroes after his defeat, but he still maintains a certain ruthlessness.
  • Smug Snake: He at first presents himself as reasonable, but Samael is just as full of himself as Yuriel. When he's finally revealed as the Big Bad, he lets the true depths of his ego show, demanding that the heroes bow before his might.
  • Status Buff: Samael's biggest claim to fame is imbuing every card in his deck with Legion, which buffs the attack power of each card on either side of the Legion. In effect, this can be a little more effective than a straight Empower buff depending on how it's played. The trope is also inverted with his other skill, Weaken All.
  • The Stoic: It's even in his description. In the Void Core, however, he lets this go in favor of some good old scenery-chewing ham.
  • Support Party Member: He becomes one in Gladius Arena, where he can grant Scorch to your entire deck if you give him Gladius Coins. It's implied the Scorching comes from Dyrnwyn.
  • This Cannot Be!: Says the line nearly word-for-word when he's defeated at the end of the "Void Core" mission.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Absolutely nothing covers Samael's upper body save the bracer on his upper arm.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about him without giving away his status as the Big Bad and his attempted genocide of the Chaos faction.
  • Winged Humanoid: As expected of an archangel, Samael boasts an impressive pair of golden-brown wings.

    Rayne

Rayne the Wavecrasher

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/raynewavecrasher.png
A master of water and wind magic, Rayne is the prime guardian of water life on Arcantica. She really knows how to rain on a parade.
Protector of the seas, the motherly Wavecrasher is a powerful elemental of water and wind. Despite a stern exterior, she has near-boundless compassion for the other heroes, and can often be found helping out behind the scenes.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: She has no patience for Agatha, whose reason for fighting the heroes basically boils down to "I can't hurt my own child, therefore let me join the Crimsonwings."
Agatha: What would you have me do? She has strayed from her path, but I cannot bring myself to harm her.
Rayne: I would not be frightened to discipline my own daughter.
  • Balance Buff: The February 2022 Hero rework helped to make her less situational. Her Imbue Frostbreath was strengthened considerably and no longer affected just Elementals, and while she lost a single-target Barrier, her Barrier All improved too. She was considered a bit too strong, however, leading to a slight Nerf to her Frostbreath in September 2022.
  • Barrier Warrior: One of her skills is Barrier All. Before the Balance Buff, this was more pronounced — she could use Barrier All as well as Barrier Elemental.
  • Censor Suds: Despite not being human, Rayne still has a feminine humanoid physique, and she covers her chest and naughty bits with strategically placed watery frills.
  • Elemental Hair Composition: Her hair seems to be made of long strands of water.
  • Elemental Embodiment: A powerful elemental of wind and water, Rayne's entire body seems composed of stylized blue water.
  • Face Your Fears: Encourages Oda to do this during his Hero Upgrade mission.
  • Gentle Touch vs. Firm Hand: The Firm Hand to Agatha's Gentle Touch. Rayne generally encourages people to confront their personal issues head-on, whereas Agatha is so unwilling to consider such a thing that she furthers the Crimsonwings' goals, despite not even believing in their cause.
  • Ice Magic Is Water: Although she's mainly a water elemental, Rayne seemingly has powers over ice — she can grant the Frostbreath skill to cards in her deck, and protect the whole team with a weak Barrier presumably made of ice.
  • Jack of All Stats: Rayne isn't as aggressive as Decim or Aria, or as strictly defensive as Cedric or Groc. She has one offensive skill and one defensive.
  • Meditation Powerup: Trains Decim to handle his Psychoactive Powers by meditating.
  • Mundane Utility: Her powers over water make her an excellent firefighter during the first Beetleton Bunker expedition.
  • Nerf: A minor update in September 2022 weakened her Frostbreath.
  • Situational Sword: Prior to her Balance Buff, her Imbue Frostbreath and single Barrier only affected Elementals.
  • Super-Empowering: One of Rayne's signature skills is imbuing a random card in the deck with Frostbreath, which deals a bit of damage to the three enemies closest to it in a cone.
  • Support Party Member: Not her, but in Beetleton Bunker's campaign, she has rescued a trio of elemental "Spiritlings" who can provide buffs as long as you're on the map. The Earth Spiritling grants Armor, the Wind Spiritling grants Siphon, and the Fire Spiritling grants Berserk. They later reappear in Distorted Beetleton, having grown a bit more but giving the exact same buffs.
  • Surpassed the Teacher: Her final test for Decim is to see if he can shoot some targets as quickly and skillfully as she can. He doesn't quite make it, but she's still pleased with his progress.
  • Team Mom: She's normally more distant from the rest of the team, but when she appears, she's usually there to help another hero through some kind of psychological stumbling block.
  • Water Is Womanly: It doesn't get more watery or womanly than a woman made of water.

Chaos Heroes

    Aria

Aria the Necromancer / Aria the Nightwielder

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/arianecromancer.png
The face of evil...?
Click here to see Aria the Nightwielder
Aria is a powerful necromancer who aligns herself with Chaos magic. She likes long walks by moonlight and "making" new friends.
A necromancer from the Chaos faction who finds herself under the thrall of the Void. By clearing her Hero Upgrade mission, she can finally rid herself of its taint and be upgraded to Aria the Nightwielder.
  • Admiring the Abomination: During the Karthos campaign, the party is attacked by an angry fire titan. Aria's response is one of awe.
Aria: ...I want to make that creature mine.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: Necromancy isn't usually a heroic power, but Aria is one of the first and most morally upright Heroes you can play as.
  • Balance Buff: The 2022 hero rework granted Aria Imbue All Berserk, even as a Rare hero, and strengthened her Weaken in exchange for losing Hex. Likewise, Aria the Nightwielder lost Hex, Enhance Berserk, and Weaken All in favor of Imbue All Berserk and a much stronger single Weaken. Once a laughingstock, she quickly transformed into one of the three strongest heroes in the game.
  • Beat the Curse Out of Him: She's freed from the Void's influence once the player defeats her in battle.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: After being defeated the first time, it turns out that Aria was under the control of the Void's magic all along. From then on, she's a mainstay in the heroes' party.
  • Casting a Shadow: In addition to her necromancer powers, Aria can shoot blasts of dark magic at her foes to fend them off, as seen during the Salt Wastes campaign.
  • Curiosity Killed the Cast: In the Aria's Fall campaign, Aria travels to the Salt Wastes in search of the ancient power sealed there. She gets far more than she bargained for when she encounters the Void and ends up getting corrupted.
  • Damage-Increasing Debuff: Prior to her Balance Buff, both versions of Aria could use a weak single-target Hex.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: While a powerful necromancer, Aria is firmly on the side of good. She's the first sign of the Chaos faction as a whole being this trope, and she spells that fact out for you during the Karthos campaign.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Prone to making snarky quips about the adventure, often without missing a beat.
Rayne: Aria, how are the civilians?
Aria: Panicked, dismayed, confused, and generally annoying.
  • Delirious Misidentification: In Aria's Fall, she attacks Little Tarian, her skeleton familiar, after losing all grasp of her surroundings.
Aria: Who are you? Where am I?! STAY AWAY!
  • Familiar: A small, half-sapient skeleton follows her around wherever she goes. The one who accompanies her in the Aria's Fall campaign is named Little Tarian, and she also has a second one named Ronaldo. During her Hero Upgrade mission, Ronaldo shows visible concern for her as she prepares to brew the Black Flower potion.
  • Find the Cure!: Her Hero Upgrade mission has her journeying to one of Malchior's old labs in the Salt Wastes to find a Black Flower that can be used to cure her Void illness.
  • Go Out with a Smile: She gives a highly unexpected smile as she girds herself for a one-way journey into the Abyss.
  • Hate Plague: Has the power to rally the Undead and make them do her bidding. As a playable Hero, her main niche is granting Berserk to all of your cards.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In the Salt Wastes campaign, Aria decides to make up for the last time she was here by throwing herself through the portal to the Abyss.
Aria: You keep risking your life to save others. Now it's about time that I do the same for you.
  • Madness Mantra: Repeats the Voidlings' cries of "come with us" as "Aria, Void Controlled".
  • Mind Rape: Finds herself on the receiving end of it in Aria's Fall, courtesy of the Voidlings.
  • Misery Builds Character: Her description in Nightwielder form mentions that her close call with the Void granted her new abilities, which is reflected in her whole toolkit becoming stronger.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: When she joins you in the Salt Wastes, Aria notes that now she can make up for the last time she was there, when she got herself brainwashed.
  • Neat Freak: Implied. She calls Dawnglow Swamp "filthy", and remarks that she'd rather freeze to death than go anywhere near it.
  • Necromancer: No duh. During the Elaria Expedition, she's the one who raises the undead hordes and disrupts everything.
  • No-Sell: In the World's Center campaign, she's immune to Vulcanos's brainwashing aura as a result of coming in contact with the Void.
  • Only Sane Woman: Especially in comparison to Ursurio, she's fairly Genre Savvy, and always seems to expect the worst just before it comes to pass.
  • Poor Communication Kills: That said, however, she grabs the Conflict Ball during the Fireshard Mine campaign when she accuses the Cydroids of providing Xerkahn and her forces with materials.
    Cydroid: Error. Communication breakdown.
Aria: No, you piles of rust. I keep telling you—
    Cydroid: Initiating sequence: self-preservation.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: Once she's promoted to Legendary, her hair goes from dark brown to a deep shade of purple.
  • Powers via Possession: As the last enemy of Aria's Fall, she has more HP than she does as a Rare hero, and can use the more powerful Hex All and Weaken All skills.
  • Professor Guinea Pig: Downplayed. The potion she drinks to cure her Void infection at the end of her Hero Upgrade mission was brewed by her, but only after consulting Malchior's notes on the subject.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Her upgraded form, Aria the Nightwielder, has glowing purple eyes, purple hair, and is shown surrounded by various purple-colored spirits.
  • Tainted Veins: Gains some glowing purple ones after being infected by the Void, as shown in her Hero Upgrade mission.
  • When She Smiles: As she prepares to enter the portal to the Abyss, she gives a very rare and "unusually soft" smile. The narration notes that she's always scowling otherwise.

    Decim

Decim the Firebringer / Decim the Pyrokinetic

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/decimfirebringer.png
Some men just want to watch the world burn.
Click here to see Decim the Pyrokinetic
Decim has always had an affinity for fire magic, even before being exiled from his village after it mysteriously burned down. An accident with a stolen spellstone imbued him with powerful abilities while also taking most of his sanity.
An easily excitable, slightly crazed young man with a love for dragons, fire, and dragonfire. His later appearances humanize him considerably. By teaching him some extra compassion, he can be upgraded to Decim the Pyrokinetic.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Unlike the other heroes, who imbue cards with certain effects as indirect support, Decim can also attack on his own using Bolt All. After becoming Decim the Pyrokinetic, his main use is Bolting and Barraging his way through the enemy's defenses.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: When Rayne is attempting to train him to use his powers for good, he gets distracted by a lava crab, and his fire powers start blazing out of control.
  • Ax-Crazy: Decim was reduced to a fire-slinging maniac after a strange accident involving a spellstone.
  • Balance Buff: To outright ridiculous levels. Before the 2022 hero rework, Decim got two Bolts and a third skill — Enhance All Vengeance as "the Firebringer", and Imbue Chaos Scorch as "the Pyrokinetic". Afterward, "the Firebringer" now has Bolt All and Imbue Chaos Scorch, making him a more effective version of the previous "the Pyrokinetic". The revamped Decim the Pyrokinetic now has Bolt All and Barrage, making him an incredibly useful counter to enemy Invisibility and great at killing towers during Clashes and Challenges.
  • Chaotic Stupid: On occasion. For example, when he's released from prison in Goblin Rise Stronghold, his immediate instinct is to free all the other prisoners along with him!
Decim: No creature deserves to be caged! Run free!
  • Characterization Marches On: Decim first appears in the Karthos campaign as a mustache-twirlingly evil lunatic who lays siege to Tarian's castle For the Evulz. His later appearances show that he can genuinely care for others, particularly his young dragon Duhast, whom he treats like his own child.
  • Children Raise You: Realizes he can actually feel empathy for someone besides himself when his baby dragon, Duhast, runs off during his Hero Upgrade mission.
  • Deliberately Distressed Dude: In the Goblin Rise Stronghold campaign, he hands over the Spellstone Hammer in exchange for his dragon's freedom. Although Fiona and Orgoth first find him in jail, he is a willing prisoner, and is only there to take care of his beloved pet.
  • Dragon Tamer: Claims he is one after he gets a wind drake of his own, which angers Fiona.
  • Enemy Mine: In the very first Tarragon Peak expedition, he volunteers to assist the player because the berserk dragons in the area are dangerous enough on their own, and he doesn't want to be targeted by the heroes on top of that. The minute he's safe, he immediately backstabs them because he wants the dragons' power for himself.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Is first introduced during the Karthos campaign, laying siege to Karthos just for the hell of it.
  • The Exile: He was kicked out of his own village after it mysteriously burned down, likely by Decim himself.
  • Fireballs: His bread and butter. His art as Decim the Pyrokinetic even shows a pair of fireballs with teeth in his hands!
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Gains a pair as Decim the Pyrokinetic.
  • Hidden Depths: As shown in his Hero Upgrade mission, Decim wants to raise a dragon of his own, particularly because a dragon tamer said he'd never be able to pull it off. When he finally hatches his dragon egg, he becomes genuinely protective of it and even names it Duhast.
  • Horror Struck: In the first Halloween Episode, Decim makes fun of the goblin children who believe in the legend of Pumpking... then he comes face-to-face with the real deal.
  • I Work Alone: Doesn't really play well with others. After he is freed from prison in the Goblin Rise Stronghold campaign, he immediately runs off.
  • Nerf: After his massive Balance Buff in February 2022, Decim's Barrage was lessened by 1 in response to player outcry. He's still one of the best heroes in the game, however.
  • Never My Fault: He defends himself from accusations of burning down people's houses in a very unconvincing way.
Decim: Well they shouldn't have put all those houses in the open like that!
  • Nominal Hero: In the first Goblin Rise Stronghold expedition, he saves the fortress from an undead attack... all because he wanted his hands on some baby dragons!
  • Noodle Incident: It's never specified what exactly happened to grant Decim his powers over fire.
  • Playing with Fire: A master of fire magic, Decim's toolkit revolves around spamming his Bolt All skill to burn through enemy defenses. He can even help your Chaos cards inflict Scorch. As Decim the Pyrokinetic, he swaps the Scorch out for the much more dangerous Barrage, which is implied to be him spewing fireballs everywhere.
  • Psychoactive Powers: His fiery abilities are directly tied to his emotional state — the more excited he gets, the less control he has over them. Rayne trains this out of him by teaching him how to meditate.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Treats battle and warfare as though it were little more than a game. Aria outright calls him a child. As he gains more control of his powers and a sense of empathy, the "psychopathic" part becomes much less pronounced.
  • Pyromaniac: Obsessed with burning down everything.
  • Red Baron: "The Firebringer", "Chaos Incarnate", and "Flame Incarnate". And later, "The Pyrokinetic".
  • Situational Sword: He can imbue a random card with Scorch each turn... as long as that card is Chaos. As Decim the Pyrokinetic, he ditches this in favor of Barrage.
  • Spam Attack: Decim the Pyrokinetic, his upgraded version, gains Barrage, which amounts to spamming weak projectiles multiple times. It's good for burning through enemies' Invisibility.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: The dragon-loving, easily excitable and immature Decim of later arcs is a far cry from the open pyromaniac he was portrayed as in his first appearance.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Unlike the other playable heroes, even Samael, Decim's main motivation is simply burning down everything in his path... at least, before Character Development sets in.
  • Where I Was Born and Razed: Implied to have burned down his own village, which obviously led to him getting exiled.
  • Wild Card: Fiona outright calls him one. Of the playable heroes, he's the most self-serving and the least predictable, even though he's generally on the side of good.
  • You're Insane!: In the Return to Karthos campaign, Decim remarks that Tarian has gone "absolutely nuts" after falling under Vulcanos's dominion.

    Tarian

Tarian the Lich Lord

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tarianlichlord.png
Wrapped in the cold winds of death, Tarian sits upon his throne as the center of the Chaos. Well respected, and well feared. He's a skeleton after all.
The undying ruler of Karthos, a harsh and volcanic land home to many of the Chaos faction of magic. He might look frightening, but he is among the player's closest allies.
  • Affably Evil: As of the game's final arc, he has turned to Vulcanos in order to protect his people from the growing Aether menace. Unlike Garrick, however, he is kind enough not to attack — instead, he simply orders the heroes to leave his kingdom, which they gladly do.
  • Balance Buff: For the 2022 Hero rework, Tarian lost Bolt All in favor of Imbue Daze, and his Imbue Siphon and Enhance All Siphon were consolidated into Imbue All Siphon.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: It's clear he tries to seem like an intimidating ruler, but he has a hidden soft side, and he is very adamant about keeping it hidden. See Think Nothing of It below for one example.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: While undeniably frightening, Tarian is a fully Reasonable Authority Figure and never once antagonizes the heroes.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Can be just as sarcastic as Aria when he wants to.
Tarian: Yes, do continue. I'll fend off the monsters while you play hopscotch.
  • The Dreaded: His description notes that he's "well respected and well feared" thanks to his skeletal appearance. He once tries to use this to frighten people away from the Center of the Void, but it doesn't work.
  • Face of a Thug: He's perfectly nice and reasonable, but Tarian still looks like an evil skeleton king. This gets him and Malchior attacked a few times, as people tend to assume Tarian is as nasty as his appearance suggests.
  • Life Drain: He imbues every card in his deck with Siphon, which regenerates their health whenever they attack another card.
  • Mundane Utility: In one of the Christmas Episodes, Malchior enlists his help to chop down a Christmas tree with his mighty axe. Tarian's not happy about it.
Tarian: Malchior, my ax is meant for cleaving bone, not chopping firewood!
  • The Necrocracy: The ruler of Karthos, the domain of the Chaos. Some of his subjects are living, but a few are undead just like him.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In the World's Center campaign, he suddenly acts a lot more ominous, speaking less and giving Aria a Thousand-Yard Stare. It's because Scyer, who's clearly Not Himself, is behind her, ready to strike!
  • Our Liches Are Different: Perhaps because he's a lich, Tarian is one of the few Undead characters in the game who isn't merely a mindless force of evil.
  • Malaproper: Isn't quite sure how to pronounce the words Malchior namedrops when examining scientific equipment.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: In contrast to Samael, Tarian immediately encourages the heroes to take the fight right to the Void.
  • Scary Skeleton: A powerful skeletal lich king who is feared as The Dreaded.
  • Status Effects: Imbues a random card with Daze every turn, which debuffs the enemy's attack when they're hit with an attack.
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: He's the Straight Man to Malchior's Wise Guy, especially when they explore the Center of the Void together.
  • Think Nothing of It: He convinces the player to join General Garrick on the Desolate Red Valley campaign by saying Karthos would be weakened by the loss if Garrick were to go it alone, but it's clear Tarian is trying to work through his guilt from having lost Garrick to the Void in the past.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: In the game's final arc, he curries favor with Vulcanos so that he can keep Karthos safe from Solaron, Kensho, and the other Aether.

    Orgoth

Orgoth the Hex Fist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/orgothhexfist.png
He's got the whole metagame in his hand... at least, he used to.
A respected leader of the Salt Waste tribes, Orgoth gained strange magical powers once buried deep in the Wastes. If he tries to give you a handshake you should probably decline.
A cunning orc with a fist full of cursed magic. Less inclined to join the action than most of the other heroes, but Orgoth's wit and power make him a highly valuable ally. He is a crucial player in the battle against Reks, the goblin king.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Both of Orgoth's skills are offensive and don't rely on supporting the other cards in his deck at all.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Orcs are traditionally portrayed as evil in fantasy settings, and his cursed fist makes him look even more Obviously Evil. He's not.
  • Fantastic Racism: On the receiving end. When he arrives in the city of Luminis for supplies during Yuriel's Hero Upgrade mission, Yuriel immediately assumes he's up to no good and threatens to call in the guards simply because he is Chaos.
  • Fisticuff-Provoking Comment: Orgoth doesn't seem willing to use violence until Yuriel's Hero Upgrade mission, where a confrontation between him and Yuriel becomes heated after the latter profiles him. Orgoth responds by shutting him up inside a magical barrier and leaving.
  • Funetik Aksent: Some of his dialogue is rendered in some sort of Orcish accent. It doesn't happen often, though, meaning the accent is barely noticeable.
    Orgoth: See someth'en funny, owl?
  • Guile Hero: Manages to infiltrate Reks's fortress and gain audience with him by walking up to it unarmed and offering to work together with him. He then directs Reks on a long route to exhaust his army, and waiting at the end of it is Fiona and her forces.
  • Hidden Depths: He's an old friend of Boldur, and they once played cards together when they were in the Salt Wastes.
  • Nerf: While most Heroes received a considerable Balance Buff in February 2022, Orgoth lost Enhance Pierce and Weaken in exchange for a weak single-target Bolt. Justified, as before that he had a total stranglehold on the metagame.
  • Our Orcs Are Different: Though others are mentioned, he's the only orc the player meets in the game.
  • Red Right Hand: Subverted. While he does have an obviously hexed left hand, he's far from evil, and he aids the heroes as soon as the player unlocks him.
  • Status Infliction Attack: He's most known for having the dreaded Hex All skill, which causes any card that's been hit by it to take 2 extra points of damage from basically everything.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: He wears Pelts of the Barbarian over his right shoulder, but otherwise, it isn't covering anything.

    Scyer

Scyer the Fury Mecha

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/scyerfurymecha.png
The name is Scyer, the Warden of Fire. Prepare to expire!
Once a smelter of steel, this Mecha learned how to feel. What he found was endless rage, so it was war he came to wage. Now with his mind restored, he fights of his own accord.
An aggressive, constantly rhyming robot first encountered in Fireshard Mine as a persistent thorn in the heroes' side. His true personality isn't nearly as dangerous, and he is subsequently restored to sanity after he finds his critical thinking protocol. However, he eventually winds up becoming the boss of World's Center when he falls under another spell.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Without his critical thinking protocol, Scyer is an extremely dangerous robot with a rotten temper. In World's Center, he falls under the sway of an unknown power and becomes a boss.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's not clear what got hold of his mind to turn him into the boss of World's Center. Tarian assumes it's because the area has remnants of the Void's power, while Aria theorizes Vulcanos has some kind of hold on him. Eventually Aria is proven correct.
  • Arc Villain: The primary antagonist of the Fireshard Mine campaign. He gets better.
  • Balance Buff: Before the February 2022 hero reworks, the playable version of Scyer had Enhance All Berserk, Enrage Mecha, and Enrage All. He was subsequently retooled to have Imbue All Scorch, much like he does as an enemy, to boost his overall effectiveness.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: In World's Center, he becomes a proper boss after falling under Vulcanos's power. The only recourse the heroes have is to temporarily disable him until they can leave the area and take him away from the bad influence.
  • Chest Blaster: Scyer has one mounted on his torso that shoots lava.
  • Damage Over Time: While he can't damage enemies directly, Scyer imbues every card on his side of the field with weak Scorch, which deals more and more burn damage to enemies each turn. As an enemy, he can also pick one card at random to deal greatly enhanced Scorch damage for one turn.
  • Degraded Boss: Inverted. "Scyer of Fire", the enemy version of Scyer, becomes a proper boss in World's Center.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: In the newly-renamed World's Center campaign, Aria is vocally against keeping him around as a partner.
  • Funny Robot: Downplayed. While he's rather aggressive and somewhat serious, his constant rhyming is at least an attempt at comedy on the writers' part.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: The Cydroids explain that he frequently "overheats" because he doesn't have a thermometer to regulate his temper. This translates to aggressive, territorial behavior. Turns out it's not the thermometer's fault, though — inserting it into him gives him some kind of virus, which puts him out of commission for a while.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After his defeat, Scyer discovers his critical thinking protocol and regains his sanity. He becomes playable after clearing the bonus level "Tinman's Change of Heart" in Fireshard Mine.
  • Hidden Depths: He apparently uses his rhyming skills to write raps.
Scyer: No true knight, not even a squire, would quake in fear as I pose and spit fire. With pure rhythm and rhyme, and sick beats in set time. I'm Arcantica's Greatest, Fury Mecha Scyer!
    (Beat)
Scyer: You can catch my latest single on my website!
  • Increasingly Lethal Enemy: Scyer's entire schtick is this trope. As detailed above in Damage Over Time, Scyer's deck revolves around Scorching his opponents every turn. His other skill, Enrage All, will permanently increase his cards' attack power whenever they are attacked directly.
  • Mighty Glacier: Scyer's slow, gradual playstyle lends itself well to slow decks that can take full advantage of being Enraged.
  • Morality Chip: An important part vital to Scyer's "critical thinking protocol" was stolen from him and locked away in a chest by Reks, the goblin king, out of spite when Scyer and the rest of the Mechas would not join him.
  • Must Make Amends: Once he comes to his senses and recovers his Morality Chip, he immediately joins the heroes as an apology.
  • Not Himself: During the World's Center campaign, he goes eerily silent. Then he attacks, joining the ranks of the Undead in the area.
Aria: Scyer? You've never been quiet a day in your life. You're scaring me.
  • Redemption Demotion: Downplayed. As an enemy, Scyer could choose one card at random and enhance their Scorch damage by 5 points for one turn. As a playable character, he can no longer do this, but he makes up for it by imbuing slightly higher Scorch damage across the board.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: To the point where even his biography rhymes, as both an enemy and a playable character.
  • Santa Claus: In the third Christmas campaign, he's the one bringing gifts to Tarragon Peak. Apparently there is a pool of magical lava he can reach into and pull out wrapped presents.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: At one point in Fireshard Mine, he chases the player and Aria onto a mine cart, and says a Sound-Effect Bleep out loud when they knock him off and escape.
Scyer: Undignified beep! That was just cheap!
  • Shoulder Cannon: Has a pair of flamethrowers for shoulders. They can also release steam to cool him down in case he overheats.
  • Verbal Ticked: He always rhymes, with one exception — when he narrates the story of "Toknight". Seems even he has trouble with limericks.
Scyer: Is this thing on? Can ev'body hear me? Yo! WHAT'S UP SKYHAAAAAVEN?!
  • Zombie Gait: As a boss, he begins walking with his arms outstretched, just like a zombie.

Wyld Heroes

    Elyse

Elyse the Ranger / Elyse the Truestriker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/elyseranger.png
Take a walk on the Wyld side.
Click here to see Elyse the Truestriker
Elyse lived a simple life on the edge of civilization until adulthood, giving her a burning spirit for adventure and the tools to track it.
An intelligent and resourceful young explorer whose knowledge of Arcantica is invaluable to the heroes' quest. By clearing her Hero Upgrade mission and encouraging her to experience the world around her more, she can be upgraded to Elyse the Truestriker.
  • Badass Bookworm: If Elyse isn't going out into the world to kick ass, chances are she's studying thick tomes for information.
  • Balance Buff: The 2022 hero rework strengthened her Heal and granted her Imbue All Poison as a rare hero, something she couldn't do until she became Elyse the Truestriker. Likewise, Elyse the Truestriker's poison skills were consolidated from Imbue Poison and Enhance All Poison to the more useful Imbue All Poison.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Bluefire temporarily "converts" her to his side, forcing the player to fight her as "Elyse's Shadow".
  • But I Read a Book About It: In her Hero Upgrade mission, Groc teaches her that she's relying too much on her books, and that sometimes it is simply best to learn by observing the situation and diving headfirst into it.
  • Combat Medic: The healer of the bunch, but still capable of dishing out just as much hurt as the rest of them. Her healing abilities are upgraded to affect every card in the deck as Elyse the Truestriker.
  • Druid: She's called "the Ranger", but her skillset and Nature Hero backstory are much more in line with this trope.
  • Inconsistent Coloring: Her eyes are green in her regular art, but her upgraded form Elyse the Truestriker has brown eyes instead.
  • Master Poisoner: A heroic example. Elyse's signature skill is giving every card in the player's deck the ability to inflict poison damage.
  • Nature Hero: She's been one with nature for basically all her life. Unusually for the trope, she is also keen on books and research, and among the smartest playable characters.
  • Non-Indicative Name: She's called "the Ranger", but her fighting style is much more based on healing and poison than projectile attacks, and overall is much closer to a druid. Her art as Elyse the Truestriker remedies this by giving her a bow and arrow, but she still doesn't use it.
  • Status Buff: Thanks to her Imbue All Poison, every card in Elyse's deck can deal weak poison damage.
  • String Theory: During the Seastone Citadel campaign, she locks herself in her room for days to research the symptoms of Void poisoning. By the time Oda walks in to check on her, the walls and even the floor are totally plastered in information.
  • Wild Hair: As Elyse the Truestriker, her hair is much messier, and even has leaves in it!

    Ursurio

Commander Ursurio / General Ursurio

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/commanderursurio.png
A most unbearable appetite.
Click here to see General Ursurio
Ursurio is a respected representative of the Wyld despite his often aloof attitude and outlook. And hunger cravings.
The rather bumbling commander of the Wyld military. Ursurio is known for his extreme gluttony above all else, but he's still capable enough on the battlefield that his higher-ups have seen fit to promote him. By clearing his Hero Upgrade mission, he finally accepts his position and becomes General Ursurio.
  • Anti-Armor: Ursurio's skills are Empowering allied Wyld cards and imbuing one random card with Pierce, a toolkit that lends itself well to breaking down enemy Armor and Barrier. As General Ursurio, his buffs extend to every card on the player's side, giving the entire deck an anti-armor flavor.
  • Balance Buff: The 2022 hero rework gave Commander Ursurio the same Imbue Pierce that General Ursurio had over Enhance Pierce, and got rid of his healing in favor of changing his Empower Wyld to Empower All Wyld. General Ursurio took this farther, with Imbue All Pierce and a blanket Empower All.
  • Beary Friendly: An anthropomorphic bear who joins the player on many a heroic mission.
  • Beary Funny: Or, at least, he thinks he is. His sense of humor leaves a lot to be desired.
Ursurio: And then I said to him, "No, you're not a wet bear, you're a DRIZZLY BEAR!"
  • Big Eater: Thinks with his stomach first and his head second. To the point where his description as General Ursurio laments that he wished his promotion came with free sides.
  • Body-Count Competition: Challenges Cedric to one during his Hero Upgrade mission. Unsurprisingly, Cedric wins, and then challenges Ursurio in turn to an Eating Contest.
  • Combat Medic: Before the 2022 hero rework, he had some weak healing as well as Empower and Pierce. With his Balance Buff, he ditched the healing completely, evolving into a full Anti-Armor hero.
  • The Ditz: Aside from his skills on the battlefield, he's really not too bright. It's like he has a stomach instead of a brain.
  • Failed a Spot Check: He holds his armor rack up with a letter, not realizing it's his promotion letter, marked with the Wyld army's insignia.
  • Genius Ditz: He may be extremely lazy and dimwitted, but he really can serve as an effective commander when push comes to shove. Clear his Hero Upgrade mission, and he'll even get promoted to general.
  • Is It Something You Eat?: Wonders aloud if he can eat the Soul Wisps the party encounters on the road to Luminis.
  • Obsessed with Food: He'll often bring up eating at inappropriate times. For example, there's this gem when the party is being ambushed by wolves on the way to Luminis...
  • Plucky Comic Relief: His bottomless stomach is frequently played for comedy.
  • Santa Claus: No, really. In the second Christmas level, he's the mysterious gift-giver who brings Magistrate Agni and the Celestial Vault elementals gifts and Christmas cheer.
  • Situational Sword: He has a fairly decent Empower skill for a hero, but it only works on Wyld cards. Averted with General Ursurio, who simply Empowers everybody.
  • Skewed Priorities: While investigating the poisoned water in Dawnglow Swamp, he goes as far as eating the crayfish that have been swimming in it in order to get himself a snack.
  • The Slacker: His description as General Ursurio describes his career in the Wyld army as "countless years of dedicated laziness and a sloth-like attitude". Not exactly the kind of person who should be in charge of a military.
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: During the Dawnglow Swamp campaign, he's the Wise Guy to Groc's Straight Man.
  • Take Me to Your Leader: Says this line during the Return to Elaria campaign, noting that he always wanted to give it a shot. The situation has nothing to do with aliens, though, so it just kinda comes out of nowhere.

    Groc

Groc the Hammer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/grocthehammer.png
Body of stone, heart of gold.
An ancient being of living stone, Groc wanders the wilderness in search of wisdom. You don't want to be between him and a hard place.
A centuries-old earth elemental whose slumber in the Celestial Vault was disturbed when the Void returned, throwing his fellow elementals into disarray.
  • Allergic to Evil: During the Dawnglow Swamp campaign, Groc begins struggling to move as he and Ursurio reach the source of the poison. He notes that he feels similarly ill while in the Void.
  • Badass Boast: "Calmness, young one. I am older than the tree that became the book you hold."
  • Balance Buff: He was reworked in February 2022, losing his Empower All and single Barrier in exchange for getting his Enhance All Invisibility upgraded to Imbue All Invisibility. He also got Enhance All Shroud, but that's mostly there for decoration.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: You don't get a title like "the Hammer" by being weak.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: In the very first Celestial Vault expedition, he encourages the heroes to tame the rampaging elementals across the Vault once he is defeated.
  • Discard and Draw: His skillset as an enemy in the Celestial Vault is much different from his skillset as a playable character. Enemy Groc has 57 HP, Empower all 2, Barrier 1, and Barrier 2. Playable Groc has much more health and a skillset revolving around the Invisibility skill instead.
  • Don't Think, Feel: Encourages Elyse to put down her books and watch the Elementals in the Celestial Vault interacting with her own two eyes during her Hero Upgrade mission.
Groc: There is much more to the elements than their origin. Trust what you know.
  • The Drifter: Even without the player, Groc is said to journey across the wilds of Arcantica in constant pursuit of knowledge.
  • King in the Mountain: He is first found sleeping in the Celestial Vault, protected by the mechanical Lantern Guardian.
  • Long-Lived: He's at least hundreds of years old. This is most likely normal for his species.
  • Mentor Archetype: He's extraordinarily ancient and wise, and is keen to share that wisdom to anybody who will listen — particularly Elyse, who uses his teachings to upgrade to the Legendary hero "Elyse the Truestriker".
  • Not So Stoic: While he is normally very calm, collected, and wise, Groc becomes outright fearful when he learns the Celestial Vault's orbs are under attack.
  • Outside-the-Box Tactic: His Invisibility skill is perfect against bosses who can attack the player's cards with skills, such as Tanit and her One-Hit Kill Bolts.
  • Red Baron: "Groc the Hammer" and "Groc, Vault Ancient".
  • Rip Van Winkle: When first encountered as a foe in the Celestial Vault, he notes that it has been many centuries since he was last awakened.
  • Rock Monster: A powerful earth elemental who aids the heroes on their quest.
  • Stealth Expert: And he passes on this knowledge to the entire party if he's selected as the Hero. His main niche is imbuing each card in the deck with Invisibility, which lets them evade one skill targeted at them.
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: In the Dawnglow Swamp campaign, he's the Straight Man to Ursurio's Wise Guy.
  • Useless Useful Spell: Groc's Enhance All Shroud is good in theory, assuming you run a Mighty Glacier deck full of cards that can benefit from Shroud. In practice, however, this is window dressing, as you are better off taking advantage only of Groc's Invisibility.

    Cedric

Ol' Cedric

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cedricspellstone.png
He's no spring chicken, but he still hops into the fray.
Cedric is the former First Sword of the Emperor, High Commander of Dawnglow. Since retirement he spends much of his time training younger generations, advising the emperor, and catching flies for recreation.
A decorated veteran soldier from the Frog Kingdom of Dawnglow Swamp, Cedric is an invaluable point of contact for the heroes in many froggy disputes. You'd expect him to retire to his home in Golden Crown, but his advanced age doesn't stop him from joining the adventure.
  • Balance Buff: The February 2022 hero reworks attempted to make him relevant outside of Frog BGEs by giving him Samael's old Imbue All Armor skill. However, the Enhance All Corrosive the developers gave him was pretty much worthless. As a result, in a September 2022 update, Cedric's skillset was retooled once again to Imbue All Corrosive and Heal.
  • Body-Count Competition: Gets into one with Ursurio during the latter's Hero Upgrade mission. After he wins, he respectfully evens the score by challenging Ursurio to an Eating Contest.
  • Combat Medic: The original skillset for Ol' Cedric could do pretty much anything, but two big draws were Empower All and Heal All.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Wears one over his right eye. It doesn't cover the whole thing, so the player can see that the sclera has turned reddish.
  • The Good Chancellor: After retiring from the military, Cedric became royal adviser to the Frog Emperor of Dawnglow Swamp.
  • The Last DJ: He moved to Golden Crown Village because he was sick and tired of the Emperor's "political games".
  • The Medic: As of the most recent (September 2022) version of the game, one of his skills is Heal. Before the February 2022 hero updates, he was more of a Combat Medic and Master of All, with the caveat that his powerful skillset only worked on Frogs.
  • Morality Chain: After the Dawnglow frogs become pissed off at the heroes, it is Cedric's presence that keeps them from outright trying to kill the player while they journey with Kachina into Golden Crown Village.
  • Old Soldier: A tough-as-nails military veteran who can still hold his own in tough Spellstone duels under the player's control.
  • Retired Badass: He's not technically on the front lines anymore, but he has enough fight left in him to train younger frogs and serve as a playable character.
  • Situational Sword: Prior to the February 2022 Hero rework, Cedric's niche was having incredibly powerful skills (Heal All, Empower All, and Barrier All), but only having them apply to Frog cards. This disappeared with the reworks and hasn't returned since.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Absolutely draws the line at forgiving Magistrate Agni for her crimes, as she tries to find a home for herself and her fellow Avians after kidnapping a frog boy.
Cedric: That Avian fiend! [...] We must not trust her.
  • Useless Useful Spell: Prior to a September 2022 update, Cedric's main draw as a Hero was giving all of the player's cards a bit of Armor. However, he also enhanced all Corrosive skills. Since Corrosion works best when applied consistently, this didn't mix well with Cedric's Armor because this combination led to extremely weak attacks getting blocked instead of getting the enemy exposed to further corrosion.
  • Watching the Sunset: Before he gets ready to join the fray in the unavailable Golden Crown Village expedition, he tells Ursurio he wants to relax and see the sunset one last time.
  • You Remind Me of X: The Golden Crown Mayor's son, Frobert, reminds him a lot of himself as a younger frog.
