Main Characters

    In General
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: Inverted. Ringo and Milady use close-range weapons (a sword and sai respectively) whereas Arrow and Saizo use a revolver and a Tommy gun respectively. Ringo does carry a gun as a sidearm though, but in gameplay she only uses it to execute Sabbath attacks. This is reflected in their Attack command's damage type: the boys deal "Gunfire" damage, while the girls deal physical, needing a skill to deal the other kind.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: The party's numbers consist of two AI in human-like bodies and three Devil Summoners, one Freelancer and the remaining two from the Phantom Society and Yatagarasu.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Both Arrow and Milady have trouble working together, and it is not just because of which faction they belong to. Ringo and Saizo usually have to mediate in order to keep them from tearing each other's throats out.

    Ringo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ringo_2.png
Voiced by: Tomoyo Kurosawa (JP), Megan Taylor Harvey (EN)
The protagonist of the game, and one of Aion's agents alongside Figue. She has a strong curiosity about society, culture, and human emotion.
  • Ace Custom: Ringo's COMP is unique compared to others, given that it was personally designed by Aion for Ringo's personal use. Whereas COMPs summon demons to fight alongside the user, Ringo's allows her and the party to use the demons' powers for themselves, with the demons only participating in battle when she executes a Sabbath.
  • Action Girl: Ringo is a very capable combatant and Devil Summoner as she leads her party from fight to fight.
  • Affectionate Nickname: She's called "Rin-rin" by some of her demons.
  • Artificial Intelligence: Along with Figue, she was born within the network, with her human body being created by Aion.
  • Back from the Dead: By using Soul Hack, Ringo can revive a deceased individual so long as their soul is still intact. She can't use the ability willy-nilly, however, as repeated usage in a short timeframe causes her body to malfunction. After the complications started after reviving Saizo, Ringo is forbidden from using Soul Hack again until they know more about it.
  • Combat Stilettos: Wears high heels and can fight all manner of demons or summoners that come her way.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Right from her "birth", Ringo has a playful disposition and treats things with the occasional snark especially with her party members and enemies in contrast to the serious, gentle Figue. However, she tones this down whenever situations get serious.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Ringo gets called "cute" by a few of the demons she recruits and/or fuses in the Gomaden. This includes female demons as well.
  • For Want Of A Nail: More or less Ringo's justification for using Soul Hack on Arrow; his death and Onda's were flagged as the triggers behind the apocalypse, so reviving him would put them on the track to stopping it. It's through Arrow that Ringo learns about Milady and theorizes that it wasn't Arrow's death that would have caused the world to end, but his failure to protect her. Sure enough, Milady turns out to have a Covenant, which the Big Bad needs to carry out his plan. It gets turned on its head later, though, as Arrow is eventually revealed to have one of the Covenants himself.
  • Frame-Up: A sidequest involves Ringo being accused of two accounts of dine-and-dash as the culprit was a "green-haired woman in flashy clothing". It's not until after she's forced to pay for the dine-and-dash that she learns the culprit is a Doppelganger demon mimicking her appearance. In this particular case the Doppelganger wasn't doing it out of malice, she just wanted to have fun around town like Ringo but was completely unaware of what money is.
  • Godzilla Threshold: According to Figue, using Soul Hack is dangerous in that they know so little about it and put several restrictions on it. Despite Soul Hack not being meant for bringing back the dead, Ringo uses it to revive Arrow and give him a second lease on life, followed shortly afterwards by Milady and Saizo in order to gain necessary information and insight regarding the Phantom Society's plans. This causes complications for her later down the line from performing so many hacks so quickly.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Ringo wields a sword in battle as well as when she is running around the overworld.
  • Heroic RRoD: Using Soul Hack three times in such a short time span puts a massive strain on Ringo to the point she faints after resurrecting Saizo. Flamma also reveals that doing so damaged her in some way, necessitating the group to visit the Soul Matrix and periodically remove abnormalities between her and the humans she Soul Hacked to help her.
  • Insistent Terminology: She is not a robot. Granted, she has no idea what she's made of so she just seems to detest the term regardless of how accurate it may or may not be.
  • Jack of All Trades: Ringo is the only party member who can eventually equip any Mistique as her COMP is upgraded. That said, she can't upgrade her affinity with the Wind or Ruin elements beyond Rank D.
  • Late to the Tragedy: Like Figue, she arrives to find Arrow after he's been killed. Ringo opts to salvage the situation by using Soul Hack to bring him back to life.
  • The Musketeer: Her COMP, Antikythera, is actually a pair of weapons, a sword and gun. For the most part she fights with the sword, but Sabbath is activated with the gun.
  • Power Tattoo: The tattoos on her legs? Those are actually her "storage compartments" for her equipment.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Her eyes glow red when starting a Sabbath, i.e. a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown with every demon at her command wailing on the enemy.
  • Sense Freak: Downplayed, but her profile mentions that she likes "making full use of the five senses". She's freaked out upon starting her first mission and experiencing the sensation of rain on human skin for the first time.
  • Shock and Awe: She starts off with a Pixie demon, which specializes in Zio skills. She also learns Electricity Stack, making it so that she increases the Stack count by 2 when hitting weaknesses with Zio or other Electricity type skills.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Green apple cider.

    Figue
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/figue.png
Voiced by: Nanako Mori (JP), Erica Mendez (EN)
One of Aion's agents, created at the same time as Ringo. She acts as Mission Control, analyzing information and providing support.
  • Anti-Villain: After her Face–Heel Turn, she's ultimately a grieving woman who doesn't want Raven to have died pointlessly.
  • Brainwashing for the Greater Good: She eventually decides to Soul Hack the entire human race and extract the source of conflict from their very souls. This would basically strip them of something fundamental and remove their emotions.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Raven's death, and her inability to save him, breaks her completely, eventually causing her to decide her only worthwhile purpose in life is to ensure Raven's dream outlives him.
  • Dual Wielding: She wields two guns, though she claims that it's just for self-defense and rarely engages in battle.
  • Easily Forgiven: After her plan to strip humanity of emotions is stopped, and Ringo talks her down from essentially committing suicide to be Together in Death with Raven, the entire team welcomes her back with open arms.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Ironically, it's motivated by her growing affection for humanity. After failing to save Raven, she decides that the world is too full of suffering and tries to strip humanity of their emotions so they don't have to live with pain anymore. The fact that the man she loved just died and he wanted the exact same thing is certainly also figuring into her logic.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She gives up her Covenant in exchange for Iron Mask sparing Ringo and the others...or so it seems. In actuality, she transferred her Covenant to a proxy body and hid a virus inside. When Zenon kills the proxy and takes the Covenant, the virus triggers and weakens Zenon greatly, allowing the party to kill him.
  • Humanity Ensues: Over the course of the game, she gradually becomes more affectionate for humans and children thanks to her time with Raven and the kids at the orphanage. So much so that she seeks to eventually use the Covenants to free them from their despair and pain, basically picking up right where Raven left off.
  • Late to the Tragedy: Figue is tasked with preventing Ichiro Onda's death while Ringo goes to save Arrow. By the time she arrives, he's long dead, though he thankfully leaves behind a clue about what his attackers were after.
  • Love Makes You Evil: Her failure to Soul Hack Raven back to life and the fact that he fell into despair in the first place causes her to fall into a deep depression that soon culminates in her deciding to Soul Hack every human soul to remove their emotions and with it their capacity for conflict.
  • Mission Control: She provides the party with information, warning them about enemies and telling them about nearby demons. This is deconstructed at the end of the game; the fact that she's stuck in the safehouse for a lot of the game means she doesn't get to experience the world and its hardships as much as Ringo does, and much of Figue's development takes place away from Ringo. As a result, Figue becomes the most distant of the team and Ringo fails to see just how deep her feelings for Raven are, which leaves her completely blindsided when Figue crosses the Despair Event Horizon and becomes the final Big Bad.
  • The Owl-Knowing One: She uses an owl-like drone called Mimi to communicate with the party from afar. It can be used to explore places that can't be reached normally, such as vent ducts.
  • Resurrect the Villain: She tries to use Soul Hack on Raven and bring him back to life right after he dies, but he refuses to go with her.
  • Ship Tease: She is very obviously smitten by Raven when she first meets him, and there are hints that Raven to some degree reciprocates.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: She develops a very obvious crush on Raven, who is a noble and hardworking Friend to All Children. Unfortunately, while Raven was once legitimately just all of that, traumatic experiences have secretly turned him into a destructive extremist. Finding out still doesn't deter her feelings for him, and she ends up picking up where he left off after she fails to save him.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Taiyaki.
  • Villainous Legacy: After Raven's death, she picks up his scheme right where he left off to honor his memory.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about her in detail without bringing up the fact that she pulls a Face–Heel Turn and becomes the Final Boss of the main story.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: She knows her plan to soul-hack every human soul will ultimately result in robbing them of their emotions, but she argues its better than a future of endless pain.

    Arrow
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/arrow_93.png
Voiced by: Kaito Ishikawa (JP), Zach Aguilar (EN)
A Devil Summoner belonging to Yatagarasu and one of the targets Aion said to protect. He is quiet, honest and gentle but also very passionate.
  • Badass Longcoat: In his fourth vision quest, Arrow wears a long coat during what seems to be a Yatagarsu mission, not unlike Raven's.
  • Boom, Headshot!: He's introduced this way, with Ringo stumbling upon his corpse shortly after his role as The Mole in the Phantom Society was revealed and Kaburagi had a lethal confirmation with him, necessitating her to Soul Hack him to bring him back to life and undo his wounds, complete with the bullet wound visibly healing afterward.
  • Broken Pedestal: The second he senses the other Covenants in Raven and figures out he's the Iron Mask imposter, any and all respect he had for his mentor is effectively gone.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Aion flagged him as an important figure in the grand scheme of things since his death and Ichiro Onda's are seen as the triggers behind the end of the world. While Ringo believes it wasn't so much as Arrow's death that was the trigger but rather his failure to protect Milady and her Covenant, he's eventually revealed to be a Covenant-holder himself.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: In the Soul Matrix, Arrow has a gate that Ringo cannot access no matter how high his Soul Level is. When examining the gate, the flavor text implies it's different from the others. It's not until later in the game that Flamma creates a temporary bridge since Arrow's memories past the gate hold the knowledge they need to undo the seal on Arrow's Covenant.
  • The Gunslinger: His weapon is a GUMP (a devil summoner tool combined with a gun), and he's quite good with it since he manages to Shoot the Bullet and deflects it. In gameplay, it also makes his basic attack gun-typed.
  • An Ice Person: He starts off with a Poltergeist demon, which specializes in Bufu skills. He learns Ice Stack, allowing him to increase the Stack count by two when using Ice skills like Bufu to hit weaknesses.
  • Innocently Insensitive: He occasionally refers to Ringo and Figue as robots, with Ringo always becoming irritated and correcting him on the matter. It doesn't help that they can't really explain what they are.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Midway through the game, Arrow learns from Figue that he was actually one of Mangetsu's assistants alongside Gen Mayumi and is in fact the holder of the purple Covenant. Mangetsu transferred his Covenant to Arrow sometime prior to the raid on his lab, though the process had the unintended side-effect of wiping some of Arrow's memories.
  • Moe: In-Universe some demons, such as Leanan Sidhe, hold this opinion of him.
"Boys with that sad look in their eyes... I just can't help wanting to be kind to them."
  • The Mole: Per his orders from Yatagarasu, Arrow infiltrated the Phantom Society. His cover was blown when Milady, whom he was asked to protect, was declared a traitor and marked for execution by Rhyme Soldier and he had no choice but to try and save her, exposing himself in the process.
  • The Promise: Made one of some kind with Kaburagi in their younger days. By Arrow's own admission, the fight between them wasn't Arrow being found out as a double agent for Yatagarasu, but because he almost broke his promise with Kaburagi. His second Vision Quest reveals the promise between him and Kaburagi was to "become heroes and change the world".
  • Revolvers Are Just Better: His GUMP is a revolver, even though the previous game had semi-auto models.
  • Spanner in the Works: Arrow turns out to be a huge one for Iron Mask's plans since his survival helps Ringo derail the Phantom Society's plans to end the world. Namely, Iron Mask had no idea Arrow was Mangetsu Kuzunoha's assistant or that Mangetsu managed to transfer and seal his purple Covenant within Arrow. This unforeseen development allows Arrow to sense the remaining Covenants within Raven and learn he's Iron Mask.
  • Standard Power-Up Pose: When using one of his skills.
  • They Call Him "Sword": His name is Arrow.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Soy-sauce ramen.

    Milady
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/milady_4.png
Voiced by: Ami Koshimizu (JP), Erica Lindbeck (EN)
A Devil Summoner belonging to the Phantom Society, who tags along for unknown reasons.
  • Armor-Piercing Attack: Her COMP can be upgraded to make use of Piercer, a Strength based Almighty attack that functions as an alternate Attack command. Unlike most things that make a normal attack Almighty in the series, it doesn't lock her out of the normal Physical version allowing her to continue exploiting Physical weaknesses when they crop up.
  • Avenging the Villain: The game has been this for her after she figured out the Iron Mask leading the Phantom Society is actually an imposter and her boyfriend, the original leader, was killed by him. She does get her revenge, but the event is somber and leaves a bad taste in her mouth.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Her hair conveniently covers a wound on her forehead during her battle with Rhyme Soldier. The wound vanishes after she's revived by Ringo.
  • Cassandra Truth: Rhyme Soldier tells her Iron Mask considers her expendable and replaceable, and he was given orders to eliminate her. Milady refuses to believe it. After she's revived by Ringo, she works with the group in order to find out the truth for herself. It's not until after the party learns that the current Iron Mask is an imposter that Milady reveals she actually figured it out herself, but opted not to say anything since she found it irrelevant.
  • Combat Pragmatist: By her own admission in a hangout event, Milady was used to jobs that required subterfuge or underhanded methods to accomplish her goals. Ringo correctly guesses she's good with poisons as well.
  • Dark Action Girl: She's with the heroes, but she's somewhat unpleasant to work with and, while no longer part of the Phantom Society, she still believes the world's not worth saving.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Implied. When Ringo executes Soul Hack to revive her, the first memory she sees is Iron Mask without his helmet asking a young Milady to join him. Said scene is also surrounded by fire. Her third Vision Quest gives the full picture: Her home was collateral damage caused by a foreign military enacting a counter-terrorist program. Her parents were killed in the attack and would have died also were it not for Iron Mask, then Paul Taylor, saving her life.
  • Defector from Decadence: In the Good Ending. Thanks to Ringo and her experiences throughout the game, Milady decides to fully defect from the Phantom Society, and the ending even implies she, Arrow, and Saizo are working to finally bring an end to the organization for good.
  • Defiant to the End: Milady's first Vision Quest shows how she died before Ringo and Arrow found her corpse. Rhyme Soldier was fully willing to let her go despite orders to take her Covenant; after all, she'd die once they summoned the Great One, so what's the harm in letting her live a while longer? Milady chose to go down swinging.
  • Doomed Hometown: Her hometown was destroyed by a foreign military looking to wipe out insurgents in the country as part of a counter-terror program. Worse, Milady says the town was simply collateral damage with mention of any insurgents anywhere in her hometown.
  • Femme Fatale: Looks sexy as hell? Check. Knows how to kill someone in several different ways? Check. She even tells Ringo during a hangout event that she knows how to handle several different kinds of poisons and was sent on several assassination missions. Her default costume is even called this exactly.
  • Heel–Face Turn: It takes a while, but near the end of the game (and via Character Development through her Vision Quest sidestory) Milady finally sees that, as cold and unfair as the world is, it still has things worth protecting.
  • Missing Mom: Both her and her father. In Milady's second Vision Quest, she mentions to Iron Mask that she doesn't remember what they look like, though it's ambiguous whether it's a case of Parental Abandonment or they died while she was very young. Her third Vision Quest reveals they were killed when her hometown was destroyed.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Quite easy on the eyes, not helped by her jacket exposing a fair amount of her cleavage and even a little bit of her bra. In the opening movie and in her second Vision Quest, Milady is even shown in the nude.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: Milady makes it clear to Ringo and Arrow that, as far as she's concerned, she's still part of the Phantom Society and could not care less about Aion's mission to prevent the apocalypse. She's only traveling with them to find out why Iron Mask had her killed.
  • Not So Stoic: Normally extremely aloof, she shows much more emotion when Iron Mask is involved. She's also easily flustered by Ichika, as the young girl quickly takes to her despite the normal aloof behavior. Then there's "Pochi the Loyal Dog".
  • Playing with Fire: She starts off with an Onmoraki demon, which specializes in Agi skills. She also learns Fire Stack, allowing her to quickly increase the Stack count when using Fire-type skills like Agi.
  • Red Is Heroic: Subverted. Milady is decked almost entirely in red clothes, but she's got zero interest in saving the world and is only traveling with the party to get revenge on Iron Mask.
  • Revenge: She wants Iron Mask's head on a platter for labeling her a traitor despite their relationship and her promise to give up her Covenant when the time came. In actuality, it's a case of Avenging the Villain since she knows the current Iron Mask killed her lover and assumed his identity.
  • Rescue Romance: She was saved by Iron Mask before he became known by that nickname when she was young. They fell in love shortly afterward.
  • Spotting the Thread: She knew from the start of the game that Iron Mask was not her lover Paul, but in fact an imposter. Six months before the start of the game, Iron Mask stopped seeing her in person and relayed orders via proxy, which already raised some suspicions given how close they were. The order to kill her was the clincher and her suspicions become solidified after she sees the blue Covenant emerge from Zenon, which Paul was supposed to have. When asked why she did not reveal this, Milady retorts the info was not relevant since Ringo wanted to stop Iron Mask from obtaining the Covenants.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: In one hangout event Arrow mentions that his favorite movie is "Pochi the Loyal Dog", resulting in her taking an almost comically panicked expression. When asked what her favorite movie is, she can only stammer out that it certainly isn't "Pochi the Loyal Dog" and that it's nothing but cheap, commercial entertainment. And that last scene where Pochi's drawing his last breaths while being buried in snow is so forced that the director should've been strung up by his heels. Neither Arrow nor Ringo are fooled by this and call her out on it in their own ways.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Wonton noodles.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Iron Mask. He was more or less the one who gave her life meaning when she lost everything, and despite knowing her Covenant would be taken by him when the time came to summon the Great One, she was content in knowing her sacrifice would be remembered by him. This only applies to Paul Taylor, however. She has zero loyalty towards Raven, the current Iron Mask, and even outright despises him since he killed her lover and assumed his identity.
  • The Unfettered: In the same vein as Kaburagi in that nothing is gonna stop this woman from achieving her objective. After learning from Arrow that Raven is the imposter Iron Mask and the man who killed Paul, she beelines straight to the orphanage with the intent of killing him there regardless of whether the kids will be caught up in the ensuing battle. It's ultimately subverted; between the potential battle being a re-enactment of the battle that destroyed her hometown and Ichika innocently offering to read her a story after seeing her so distressed, she loses any will she had to fight Raven and willingly backs down.
  • Villainous Legacy: Becomes the third Iron Mask in her fourth vision quest.

    Saizo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cyzu.png
Voiced by: Masaya Matsukaze (JP), Griffin Puatu (EN)
A freelance Devil Summoner. A charming man who often has to intervene between Arrow and Milady.
  • Animal Motifs: Sharks. Aside from his own shark teeth, his COMP is both painted to have a shark mouth on it and has a small shark charm on it. Jawsy he calls it. His Hare of Inaba also ties into this as the Hare from myths tricked sharks into forming a bridge for it to cross the sea.
  • Babies Ever After: With Ash in his fourth vision quest.
  • Blow You Away: Unlike the other Summoners in the group, he doesn't start with a demon in his specialty. He does however learn Force Stack, like the others learn for theirs, allowing him to build up Stacks faster while making use of Force type skills like Zan.
  • Dating Catwoman: Downplayed. Ash was a member of the Phantom Society who wanted to bring about the end of the world. Since Saizo was a freelance Summoner, this didn't bother him all that much. The "catwoman" part is eventually dropped when Ash leaves the Phantom Society and turns to freelance work.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: His hair almost always covers his eyes.
  • Face of a Thug: With his eyes almost always covered and his Scary Teeth, he looks like the kind of guy who would betray the party at a moment's notice. He's actually fairly worldly and laidback if a bit worn down by the Summoner lifestyle.
  • Hammerspace: One conversation between Ringo and Milady has them notice this peculiar trait of his COMP. Arrow keeps his in a holster, Milady keeps hers hidden somewhere and are small enough to not make that questionable. Then they think about Saizo's.
Ringo: But wait... Saizo's COMP is huge. Where the heck does he hide his? Where COULD he?
Milady:: ...That, I couldn't tell you.
  • Happily Married: If his fourth vision quest is any indication, he and Ash will be this in the future. They even have a kid together.
  • Jumped at the Call: Not only does he need the least convincing to accept Ringo's offer to revive him, but he had jumped at the call to be a Summoner as well based on a memory found in the Soul Matrix.
Saizo: What the hell was that thing!? A...A "demon"? You're not serious right...? Who are you? A "Devil Summoner"...? Like, you summon those things? You COMMAND them? That's... That's the COOLEST SHIT I EVER HEARD! Could I be one? Can you teach me!? Please!? C'mon, man, I wanna be a Devil Summoner!
  • The Medic: Saizo's Mistique Affinities and unlockable Summoner Skills puts him squarely into the role of team medic. He's the only one, other than Ringo, to be able to upgrade his Healing Affinity beyond Rank D and one of his Summoner Skills (Decadant Feast) gives healing items a 50% bonus while in battle.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: After Ash pulls a Heel–Face Turn and leaves the Phantom Society for freelance work, she contacts Ringo for a sidequest and asks her to see whether Saizo is cheating on her since she caught him visiting various women's clothing and jewelry stores. Her worries turn out to be for nothing since Saizo confesses to Ringo he was looking for a gift for Ash since his original plans to surprise her after she scored a job at a cafe when their apartment burned down literally went up in smoke.
  • Noodle Incident: He once did a job for Lin at the Yang Yang Palace, though he's not forthcoming on the details and starts panicking upon reliving said memories when speaking about it to Ringo. He then begs Ringo not to speak of it any further.
  • Scary Teeth: For some reason, he's given shark-like teeth.
  • Shock and Awe: Unlike the other Summoners in the group, he joins the party with a Hare of Inaba demon which specializes in Zio skills outside of his own specialty.
  • Stepford Smiler: While he masks his feelings behind that shark-like smile of his, it drops at times to reveal the tired man he's become since the Summoner lifestyle started to wear him down.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Bouillabaisse.
  • Training from Hell: Went through this under the guidance of his master. The first training session he put Saizo through involved him being forced to survive for three days while fending off demons.

Phantom Society

    Iron Mask
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/iron_mask.png
Voiced by: Yūichi Nakamura (JP)
Lover of Milady and leader of the Phantom Society. Originally a mere Summoner among its ranks, he climbed his way to the top and became known to the rest of the organization as the Iron Mask. He is also the head of the C-Project, or Covenant Recovery Project as part of his endeavors to destroy and recreate the world.
  • Age-Gap Romance: Despite his youthful looks when seen without his mask, Iron Mask is implied to be somewhat older than Milady as the first memory Ringo sees upon using Soul Hack on Milady shows the latter as a child meeting the man who would become Iron Mask.
  • Badass Fingersnap: How he orders Zenon to kill Ichiro Onda and take his Covenant.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: He wears a black suit with a white tie. While Zenon does most of the work for him, he is by no means a slouch in battle.
  • Big Bad: The main antagonist of the game who plots to destroy and recreate the world, which Aion wishes to prevent. His role is eventually displaced by Figue, who wants to continue where Raven left off by stripping humanity of their desire for conflict or their capacity for pain.
  • Conspicuous Gloves: He wears a pair of gloves with his otherwise-ordinary suit.
  • Dark Is Evil: Wears a dark suit and wants to bring about the end of the world.
  • Dead All Along: The real Iron Mask died six months ago. The man currently leading the Phantom Society is actually Raven.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: From the way Milady speaks about him, and how he's portrayed in her Vision Quests, it seemed that the two of them were legitimately in love. While it seems at first like he didn't care about her enough to not have her disposed of, it's later revealed that the man currently assuming his identity is actually Raven.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Since no one knows his true identity, everyone refers to him as Iron Mask, even Milady. Milady reveals in her third Vision Quest his real name is Paul Taylor.
  • Evil Former Friend: He's this to Raven. While the extent of their relationship is unknown, Milady states the two knew each other and Iron Mask himself speaks of Raven fondly during Milady's second Vision Quest. This is ironically flipped on its head after Raven goes over the Despair Event Horizon and murders him to pulls a Kill and Replace in order to enact his own plan of reshaping the world.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: The English dub gives him a deep voice. It also sounds much deeper than Paul's, which is the first hint it's not him under that mask.
  • Foreshadowing: The game hints that Iron Mask is not the same man Milady was romantically involved with well before The Reveal.
    • When Ringo meets Iron Mask in person for the first time, he knows about her ability to revive others via Soul Hack and even ordered Zenon to eat Mangetsu's corpse so as to figure out its limitations. In their second confrontation, he even knows she's actually an artificial intelligence, facts he really shouldn't know.
    • In the second confrontation, he knows Figue is the Yellow Covenant-holder despite her status as Mission Control and interacting with the party via a drone.
    • The final nail in the coffin is in the wake of Zenon's death. When the Zoma is killed, all the Covenants he's gathered are released...including a Blue-colored Covenant, which is explicitly stated to be in Iron Mask's possession, not Zenon's.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: While his mask's eyes are normally black, they're shown to sometimes light up red, usually when he's about give Zenon the go-ahead to kill some poor schmuck or when he's ragingly pissed.
  • Hidden Depths: According to Milady in an optional hangout event, Iron Mask absolutely loved ninjas for how iconic they were as well as how romantic the concept was. Milady mentions he was ecstatic to come to Japan, the "land of ninjas". This throws Ringo for a loop given how Iron Mask portrays himself in-game. Which makes sense, since Raven is nothing like Paul Taylor.
  • Invincible Villain: He comes across as this as by the time Aion sends Ringo and Figue out to prevent his plans from summoning the Great One, he's already managed to accomplish several of his goals and remains two steps ahead of them, having claimed Saizo's Covenant before Ringo could save him. He also gets Mangetsu's Covenant before they can reach him, even going so far as to order Zenon to eat his corpse so as to figure out the limits of Ringo's Soul Hack (and later pleased to learn she can't bring back someone who doesn't have a physical body anymore). He loses the "invincible" part after the party finally gets one over him when his trap to gain Figue's Covenant goes awry thanks to Figue lacing her yellow Covenant with a virus to weaken Zenon.
  • It's Personal: After learning he gave the order to kill her and declared her a traitor to the Phantom Society, Milady wants to find and kill Iron Mask, finding the act a personal betrayal since she already promised to give him her Covenant when it was time to summon the Great One and reshape the world. It's actually a case of Avenging the Villain as she knew from the get-go that the current Iron Mask is an imposter.
  • Kill and Replace: Paul Taylor was actually killed six months prior to the beginning of the game. The guy that's been leading the Phantom Society is actually Raven, who like Iron Mask grew disgusted with the current state of the world and wants to create a new one where people won't have to die.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: He wears a black full-face mask, is the apparent leader of the Phantom Society this time around, and has no qualms in directly getting rid of anyone who interferes with him. Ironically the only time he's shown not acting malevolently is without his mask as seen in Milady's Vision Quests. That's because the Iron Mask we see in the flashbacks is Paul Taylor; the Iron Mask the party faces in the present assumed his identity after killing him six months prior.
  • Not So Above It All: When she's not angsting or plotting revenge on him, Milady fondly speaks of Iron Mask's more "innocent side" such as his admiration for ninjas. In a hangout event with Milady, she tells Ringo about how excited he was to finally visit the "ninja homeland" and even met some Devil Summoners who claimed to actually be ninjas, only to be disappointed when he realized they weren't.
  • Posthumous Character: He's actually been dead for quite some time, as evident by the blue Covenant in Zenon's possession, which Iron Mask is supposed to have. The real Iron Mask was murdered by Raven and had his identity usurped from him.
  • Shotguns Are Just Better: His COMP is a double-barreled shotgun.
  • Two Aliases, One Character: His identity beneath the mask is someone known to Ringo's group, and not just Milady. The current Iron Mask that is. He's actually Raven, Arrow's mentor and "older brother" figure.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He loses his composure after Zenon starts acting weirdly upon obtaining Figue's Covenant and after seeing how weakened his Zoma has become.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Milady's Vision Quests paint him as one, wanting to destroy the world and recreate it as something more worthwhile out of disgust for what the current world has become. This is the only thing Paul and Raven have in common while the latter assumes his identity.
  • Wicked Cultured: The official Japanese site reveals that he enjoys reading classical literature.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: He orders Rhyme Soldier to kill Milady despite being lovers, though why he gave the order is unclear. It's the first hint he is not Paul Taylor, since its already established Covenant-holders can identify each other just by looking; Milady would instantly know he wasn't the real Iron Mask if she saw him since Raven doesn't have a Covenant himself.

    Zenon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zenon_0.png
Voiced by: Kazuyuki Okitsu (JP)
Iron Mask's right hand and enforcer who accompanies him wherever he goes. Zenon is a Zoma created for the explicit purpose of obtaining and protecting the gathered Covenants in preparation to summon the Great One.
  • Barrier Change Boss: Uses Contract's Ward to shuffle his resistances around in the second fight.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: His weapon of choice, which he can seemingly create at will.
  • Blood Is the New Black: He's covered in blood in almost every appearance, having just killed someone. The only time he doesn't is in his last scene and second boss fight where he's killed off.
  • Dumb Muscle: The Japanese site says he has grip strength of 500kgnote , but also notes that he doesn't seem to be very intelligent. Justified since he's a Zoma and has no will or personality of his own.
  • Evil Counterpart: To the Zomas used by the protagonists of Devil Summoner and Soul Hackers. Zenon is a Zoma in service of Iron Mask, the leader of the Phantom Society, though unlike his predecessors, Zenon doesn't have much of a personality beyond being Iron Mask's attack dog and protecting the Covenants in the Phantom Society's possession.
  • Flash Step: As seen in his murder of Ichiro Onda, he can perform the classic "I am behind you" maneuver.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Zenon is a Zoma, an artificial demon made by fusing a living creature with a Dolly Kadmon. He's stronger than the typical Zoma like Zeed because of his status as the protector of the Covenants Iron Mask has collected, which also negates the weakness Zoma's weakness during a new moon.
  • Light Is Not Good: He's dressed almost entirely in white, and he winds up covered in the blood of his enemies in a few scenes.
  • Lunacy: With his multiple Covenants, the only hope the party has of defeating him is by exploiting the Zoma's weakness to the New Moon. Subverted when it's revealed he's overcome that weakness and can fight at full strength regardless of the Moon phase, requiring Figue to trick him with a poisoned Covenant instead.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: His lower face is covered by a white "cannibal"-style mask. Not that it stops him from eating a Covenant that he just ripped out of a man.

    Kaburagi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaburagi_5.png
Voiced by: Ryōta Ōsaka (JP), Chris Hackney (EN)
A Devil Summoner of the Phantom Society, who has a mission to kill Arrow. Apparently, he and Arrow were acquainted in the past.
  • Evil Counterpart: He's this to Arrow. He shares a similar design with Arrow, wields a similar COMP in combat, and is a member of the Phantom Society. They even share the same goal as was their promise to each other, except Kaburagi honestly believes that destroying and recreating the world is the best way to save it.
  • Friendly Enemy: Despite having put a bullet in Arrow's head in their last meeting in a fit of fury, Kaburagi is much more amicable and casual when he and Arrow meet again. Unlike Ash, he doesn't even ask or question how Arrow came back to life.
  • The Promise: Made one with Arrow when they were kids, promising they would become heroes as adults and go on to change the world.

    Rhyme Soldier (R.S.)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/r_s.png
Voiced by: Eiji Takeuchi (JP)
A Devil Summoner of the Phantom Society, and another subordinate of Iron Mask. He was the one who killed Milady.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: His profile on the official website says he's grateful to his parents.
  • Expy: Of Finnegan from Soul Hackers. Both of them are Devil Summoners that work for the Phantom Society and use brass knuckles-type weapons in battle.
  • A Father to His Men: In a hangout event with Milady, she tells Ringo that R.S. was very well-liked by the younger Summoners within the Phantom Society, and he in turn looked after them.
  • Gratuitous English: "Attaboy Bomb Ill Gramp Cream". His shirt is complete and utter nonsense, as can be seen on his picture here.
  • Gratuitous Rap: He almost exclusively talks in freestyle rap.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: R.S lets his fists do the talk when not rapping.
  • Shockwave Stomp: Well, punch. His Danger Zone skill is an AOE attack where he jumps and punches the ground, sending a shockwave that deals weak physical damage to all targets. When fought in the Soul Matrix he has a stronger version of this, Apocalypse Quake, that is used on his fourth turn.
  • Time-Limit Boss: You have exactly four turns to kill him in the Soul Matrix, otherwise he instantly kills everyone with Apocalypse Quake. Much easier said than done, as Arrow and Saizo are already locked out of the fight and his Bicorn is capable of spamming Diarama on him.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He's the one responsible for Milady's death, after giving her a brutal and eventually fatal beating with his diamond-tipped knuckledusters.

    Ash
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ash_73.png
Voiced by: Shiori Izawa (JP), Kira Buckland (EN)
Another member of the Phantom Society, who apparently used to be romantically involved with Saizo.
  • Babies Ever After: With Saizo in his fourth vision quest.
  • Bait-and-Switch: The opening movie makes it seem like she was the one who murdered Saizo in an act of betrayal. Saizo's second Vision Quest reveals the scene in question was actually when they broke up. While Ash did play a part in his death, she had no idea the Phantom Society wanted him dead since they only told her they wanted his Covenant and Iron Mask never told her the Covenant was bound to its holder until their death.
  • Because Destiny Says So: Why Ash still remained with the Phantom Society despite her animosity towards them for murdering Saizo, believing that since she was one of their Summoners, having a normal life with her boyfriend was unfeasible.
  • Being Evil Sucks: Ash is pretty much the only Summoner among Phantom that couldn't care about the world being destroyed, though its blatantly clear she really doesn't want to be part of them. The only reason she stayed with them after they killed Saizo is that she doesn't believe Summoners can ever have normal lives. That, and she blames herself for getting Saizo killed.
  • Dating Catwoman: The catwoman in question, though her relationship with Saizo is downplayed since he was a freelance Devil Summoner who worked for whoever paid more. The catwoman part is dropped after she leaves the Phantom Society.
  • Dual Wielding: She wields a pair of oversized derringer-style GUMPs in combat.
  • Happily Married: They appear to be this in Saizo's fourth vision quest. They even have a kid.
  • Heel–Face Turn: It takes a heartfelt talk with Saizo after her second boss battle, but she leaves the Phantom Society for good and becomes a Freelance Summoner.
  • It's All My Fault: The reason why she's still with the Phantom Society despite Saizo being alive and well thanks to Ringo. Ash blames herself for Saizo getting killed since Iron Mask gave her the order to bring her ex-boyfriend to a secluded location. Saizo tries to convince her she was not at fault, but it falls on deaf ears.
  • It's Not You, It's My Enemies: Or in this case former allies in the Phantom Society. She dumped Saizo because he broke their promise of giving up their COMPs when in reality she did so because she realized the Phantom Society was not going to let her go so easily. Saizo notes that she kept hers as well, making the latter the only real reason for the break up.
  • I Will Wait for You: She tells Saizo this after turning to freelance work, knowing he won't up and leave Ringo's group until the job is done.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: At some point in the past, Ash and Saizo gave up their jobs as Summoners and started living together in an apartment, the former having gotten a job at a cafe. On the day they were going to celebrate Ash getting a job, their apartment was bombed and burned down by an unknown assailant possibly looking for revenge against Saizo or Ash. This, plus seeing Saizo still carrying his COMP despite their promise to give them up, made her believe she was forever tied to the life of a Summoner and broke up with Saizo, returning to the Phantom Society.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: The dynamic between her and Saizo following his death and subsequent resurrection. They love each other dearly, but Saizo is working to prevent the end of the world while Ash is too loyal to the Phantom Society to consider betraying them. He eventually gets through to her, and their relationship is restored.
  • This Cannot Be!: When Ash sees Saizo alive and well despite having witnessed his final moments, she's shocked and nearly speechless.
  • Undying Loyalty: Played with. While Ash is loyal to the Phantom Society, it's because she honestly thinks Summoners aren't allowed to have normal lives, hence why she refuses to put her feelings for Saizo first.

Yatagarasu

    Hozumi

A high-ranking Yatagarasu agent who's sent to stop Ringo and company from going after Figue.

Merchants

    Tatara
She's a COMP smith who Ringo and the team turn to upgrade their COMPs when needed.
  • Berserk Button: According to Saizo, she gets very angry when someone mishandles or damages their COMP, having made the mistake himself once upon a time.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Not of the action variety, but she's got an eyepatch and is in charge of fine-tuning the party's COMPs once they bring her the necessary materials. When asked about it after completing the sidequest "Master and Student", Tara explains she screwed up on a job.
  • In-Series Nickname: She's usually just referred to as Tara.
  • Whole Costume Reference: Her design is pretty much summed up as "Ippon-Datara subjected to Moe Anthropomorphism", with even her name leaning into the reference.

    Lina
A store employee at Yang Yang Palace, a store frequented by Devil Summoners. She's known to have backdoor access to the summoner world, which she uses to get hard-to-obtain items.
  • Big Beautiful Woman: She's fat but quite attractive, sporting an impressive cleavage.
  • Item Crafting: Her job is to create rare consumable items using materials from Demon Recon.

NPCs

    Hughes
The owner of Bar Heidrun. His place is visited by the public and Devil Summoners, regardless of factions. He strictly enforces a neutrality policy when DS members of different groups dine in his establishment.

    Yume
A high school student and part-timer at Delamancha.

    Mannequin
A part-time employee at Zafiro. He's a social media influencer in his spare time.
  • Plagiarism in Fiction: He was accused of plagiarism in the past back when used to be a fashion designer, which ended his career after his fans and followers turned on him. Mannequin could not care less about the accusations since he never really connected with his fans and was more focused on his work.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: He's instantly able to tell Ringo is not human...because she's somehow more beautiful than him. This actually annoys Mannequin as he refuses to be second-best when it comes to cute.

Allies

    Madame Ginko
The owner of Club Cretaceous who offers jobs to any Summoner willing to take them.
  • Demoted to Extra: Despite her dismal role in the first game, Ginko helped point the protagonist and Nemissa in the right direction after they unknowingly catch the attention of the Phantom Society and even plays a part in the Everybody Lives ending where Spooky survives. In 2, she's relegated to being an NPC vendor who assigns Ringo jobs to help around the city.
  • Older Than They Look: An NPC near Club Cretaceous mentions that Ginko hasn't aged in over 50 years. Given how she barely seems to have aged between Soul Hackers and this game...
  • Quest Giver: Her official job description is "Job Broker", which is Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Ginko gives jobs to those who come to her or through a middleman to Summoners in search of work.
  • Truer to the Text: The English version of Soul Hackers tried to remove the implication that Ginko is a transwoman by having her be voiced by Tara Platt. Soul Hackers 2 instead carries the idea that the Japanese dub had by casting Daman Mills to voice her.

    Victor
Owner of Cirque de Gomaden and proprietor of demon fusion.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Saizo calls him "Uncle Vic".
  • Call-Back: He briefly mentions dabbling in creating artificial life, referring to his role in Soul Hackers where he helped create Zeed, a Zoma that served the protagonist and Nemissa.
  • Fusion Dance: His shop and purpose in the game is to fuse any demons you have in your stock.
  • Large Ham: He's considerably more bombastic in his art of fusing demons than he was in the first game. He even turns his services of demon fusion into a spectacle for people to watch and gets quite jubilant when performing fusion.
  • Progressively Prettier: Victor has come from being a Mad Scientist and a crippled old sailor man to being a Silver Fox ringmaster.
  • Secret-Keeper: Victor instantly figures out Ringo's true nature at a glance, but refuses to elaborate, simply saying the time hasn't arrived just yet.
  • Sequel Non-Entity: Not him, but his assistant Mary from the previous game is nowhere to be found, nor does Victor mention her whatsoever at any point in the game.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Completing his request for an Apsaras has him pose this question to Ringo, starting with a simple distinction between man and beast. Regardless of her answer, he then puts forth that "demons" are "beasts" with those qualities and moves on to demons like said Apsaras. If a "demon" is in both form and function the same as a "human", where exactly is the point that one ends and the other begins. He finally brings the topic to Ringo herself.
Victor: And amidst all this, yet another puzzle... You. An enigma, a life and mind unknown, yet a form most familiar. So what, then, do we call you?

    Raven
Voiced by: Kenji Hamada (JP), Edward Bosco (EN)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/raven_88.png
A former Devil Summoner of the Yatagarasu and Arrow's teacher. He's long since retired from the Summoner lifestyle and now runs the Komadori Orphanage.
  • Anti-Villain: He is fully aware of how monstrous his crimes are and that the party has every right to want him dead, but he believes it will all be worth it if his plan succeeds and he is able to create his better world.
  • Barrier Change Boss: After losing roughly a third of his health, he uses Reactive Armor to change all of his elemental affinities into resistances. After that, he starts using Purge, which deals damage of a random element to the entire party, while also opening up a weakness to that element. Hitting that weakness turns it back into a resistance.
  • Fallen Hero: Once a respected Summoner among its ranks, Raven grew disgusted with the world and decided to create a new world order where no one had to die. To this end, he killed Iron Mask and assumed his identity, taking over the Phantom Society in the process.
  • Morton's Fork: Figue sees him faced with one when using Soul Hack on him. A demon possessed a child's body and taunted Raven about it, saying if he killed him the child would die as well, forcing Raven to choose between letting the demon go and potentially let it cause more chaos or gun them both down. He chose the latter, but its clear the incident hurt him deeply.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: His last job as a Summoner involved destroying a village that had been corrupted by demons. Although he tried to justify the deaths of the village inhabitants, especially the children and elderly inhabitants, he found he could no longer stomach looking at his COMP, telling Figue it looked as grotesque as the corpses he left behind. This incident likely fueled his Start of Darkness, if not the catalyst behind his fall.
  • Mole in Charge: How else was the Phantom Society able to come out ahead of every conflict they've been in since he usurped Iron Mask's identity?
  • Orphanage of Love: Raven runs one, with the kids under his care adoring him and his curry. In regards to the orphanage also functioning as a "recruitment center" for kids with the capability for Summoning, he tells them straight up what they're getting into once they're old enough and ensures they have the choice to join Yatagarasu or pursue a normal life.
  • Redemption Rejection: Of a sort. Figue uses Soul Hack on him to revive him, but Raven refuses on the grounds that he's too far gone.
  • The Reveal: Towards the end of the game, he's revealed to be the Iron Mask imposter the party's been dealing with since the start of the game.
  • Retired Badass: He was originally one of Yatagarasu's Summoners, but he's since retired and now looks after an orphanage while helping the heroes out on occasion. The "retired" part is actually revealed to have dropped a long time ago as he's been impersonating Iron Mask since the start of the game.
  • Ship Tease: Figue very quickly develops an obvious romantic attraction towards him, and some of his own interactions with her indicate that he reciprocates to at least some degree.
  • Silver Fox: He's older than the heroes, but Figue is absolutely smitten with him.
  • Start of Darkness: If destroying a corrupted village and its inhabitants didn't do it, then killing a child possessed by a demon sure as hell sent him off on his journey to being the Big Bad.
  • That Man Is Dead: How Raven feels about the man he used to be. To paraphrase him, the moment Raven took on Paul Taylor's Iron Mask identity, his old identity was dead and gone.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: His reason for usurping the original Iron Mask's identity and taking over the latter's plan to summon the Great One. His vision of the new world is a world where no one has to die or be killed.

    Aion

  • Alien Non-Interference Clause: Aion styles itself as an "observer", watching the affairs of the human world while keeping contact with it to the barest minimum. Upon learning about the Phantom Society's plans to summon the Great One, it decides to intervene and sends Ringo and Figue to stop the impending apocalypse.
  • Big Good: Responsible for creating Ringo and Figue and tasking them to protect the human race from total destruction.
  • Godzilla Threshold: The fact that Aion is intervening in the affairs of the Human World at all is a pretty big one, as both Ringo and Figue note Aion had a strict "observer" policy. It commissions Flamme to give Figue and Ringo human bodies and send them off to prevent the end of the world.
  • Living Program: Ringo claims that Aion is not an AI, but rather a new life, born in the network.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: According to Figue, she and Ringo were made capable of feeling love, as apparently the chemicals involved are necessary for their brain functions in general, though that particular function is set to a low priority so as to not interfere with their mission. Being able to feel love is exactly what drove Figue insane and made her want to brainwash the entire world. Needless to say even allowing it to be low priority was a mistake.

Persons of Interest

    Ichiro Onda
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ichiro_onda.png
Voiced by: Kentarō Itō (JP)
A world-famous computer engineer, who possessed the Red Covenant and was killed by Iron Mask and Zenon for it. He was also working on a project called "Vanishing system".
  • Chekhov's Gun: He recently finished his work creating the OMNIsystem, which the scientists inheriting his work after his death cannot make heads or tails of. It ends up becoming a major plot point near the end of the game when Figue attempts to use Onda's magnum opus in conjunction with Soul Hack to brainwash all of humanity.
  • Dying Clue: He leaves behind a quantum encrypted message for Ringo and Figue. While incredibly vague by having a single word ("Covenant"), it gives them a clue about what the Phantom Society is after.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Courtesy of Zenon, who rips out his Covenant.
  • Posthumous Character: Dies as soon as the game begins, and is only seen in a securty video afterwards.

    Mangetsu Kuzunoha
Voiced by:
A Devil Summoner previously aligned with Yatagarasu before turning to other work. The Phantom Society previously tried to kill him, only succeeding in killing his assistant and destroying his lab.
  • The Ace: Many characters including Arrow and Madam Ginko state Mangetsu is among the best Summoners in Japan. Sadly, it did not help him when faced with a Covenant-enhanced monster like Zenon.
  • Deader than Dead: Iron Mask has Zenon eat his body to make sure Ringo cannot Soul Hack him back to life.
  • Dying Clue: He leaves behind his phone for Ringo and the others shortly before his death at Zenon's hands. The phone contains information about his research, specifically how to transfer Covenants without the recipient dying, how to seal a Covenant within a person, and how to create a fake duplicate.
  • Handicapped Badass: Mangetsu is missing an arm, yet the fact that he spent days running from the Phantom Society and fending off their attacks and giving Zenon a tough time speaks volumes. Figue reveals that he did not lose his arm from battle with Phantom, but rather cut it off himself and used it to transfer his purple Covenant to Arrow.
  • Hero of Another Story: Mangetsu's known for being a Devil Summoner with the Yatagarasu and likely did anti-pararnormal work before doing research work.
  • Informed Attribute: He's never shown in combat, and despite what many people have said about him, Mangetsu is ultimately killed at Zenon's hands without much trouble despite Iron Mask saying he gave his Zoma a run for its money.
  • Stalker without a Crush: The wall in his lab is covered with photos of Arrow, which creeps out the party and especially Arrow. Mangetsu was observing Arrow to ensure the purple Covenant he transferred into him was safe and away from the Phantom Society.

Others

    Nana
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/soul_hackers_2_day_one_dlc_trailer_atlus.jpg
Freelance Summoner
Voiced by: Nao Tōyama (JP), Laura Stahl (EN)
A freelance Devil Summoner from the countryside and the main character in the "Lost Numbers" DLC story arc.
  • BFG: Her COMP is a bazooka. 'nuff said.
  • Big Eater: When Ringo and the party take her to get food after she collapses from hunger, she's later shown to be gleefully rubbing her belly while the entire table is full of dirty, empty plates. Saizo and Arrow are disgustedly fascinated by how she was able to put away so much, the former wondering if she's a demon and Arrow thinking her stomach's a black hole. The second time the group goes out to eat with her Ringo is certain that she's violating some laws of physics to put away that much food but just can't figure out which ones. It's implied her immense hunger is due to her incomplete nature as a Zoma.
  • Dead All Along: The real Nana died before the start of the game. The one you meet is a Zoma that took her identity afterwards.
  • Don't Make Me Destroy You: Warns Ringo and the others not to pursue her and threatens to destroy them if they do.
  • Easily Forgiven: She does not hold a grudge against Milady after she learns about her father's death at the hands of the Phantom Society, with her reasoning being that Milady did not kill her father personally.
  • Forgot About His Powers: At the start of the third DLC quest, she admits to regularly forgetting about actually summoning anything. Not that it stops her from being a threat, as even just trying to eat people and occasionally remembering about her bazooka COMP she still managed to severely injure numerous Summoners and put up a considerable fight against Ringo's group. Of course, as a Zoma she doesn't even really need to be summoning up any other demons to help her survive those fights.
  • Freak Out: She goes into a panic and starts screaming when the Lost Number Zenon stares at her. After she calms down, she becomes very aggressive and hellbent on killing it where it stands.
  • Good Counterpart: To Zenon. Like him, Nana is a Zoma created through special means and seemingly lacks a regular Zoma's weaknesses. Nana is also on good terms with Ringo and the others, even calling them friends and helping them out on jobs when the need arises.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: She'll accompany the party during some missions in the Lost Numbers story arc, though she cannot be controlled by the player and operates independently.
  • Humanoid Abomination: She's similar to Zenon in that she's a Zoma, though unlike him she actually has a personality. She never realized she was a Zoma until she absorbed the Lost Number Zenon's Dolly Kadmon.
  • Identity Impersonator: She's not the real Nana, but a Lost Number Zoma who took on her identity with some of the original Nana's memories.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Not normally, but during her rampage, she specifically asks the group if they're edible Summoners and primarily attacks with Eat Whole and Gluttony. The fact that she's using such abilities without being an Aion-style Summoner hints at her true nature as a demon well before that is revealed.
  • I Will Find You: She's searching for her father who went missing years ago. She learns at the end of the second DLC quest that he was Mangetsu Kuzunoha's assistant, the same assistant who held the blue Covenant before he was killed by Iron Mask and the latter claiming his Covenant. The rest of the DLC has her looking for answers about herself and Gen Mayumi's research.
  • No Place for Me There: After realizing she's not a normal human but a Zoma, Nana decides she cannot go back to the "happy world" Ring and the others occupy and refuses to return with them.
  • One Degree of Separation: She's connected to all major groups and several main characters in the main story through her father Gen Mayumi. He was the lab assistant of Mangetsu Kuzunoha who the Phantom Society killed in an attempt to get the latter's Covenant and himself originally had the Blue Covenant before it was passed on to Iron Mask. Milady was also involved in that particular attack, but neither confirmed nor denied killing him. Arrow was another one of Mangetsu's assistants as well.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Her demeanor changes after recovering from her Freak Out with the Lost Number Zenon, turning aggressive and very vocal about her desire to kill it.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: When the group runs into her in the second quest of the Lost Numbers story arc, she has glowing red, clearly not in her right mind, and landed several Summoners in the hospital during her rampage. She can even give Ringo a run for her money.
