Misthalin Standard
Territory

The Kingdom of Misthalin is one of the great kingdoms of Gielinor and is one of if not the most powerful of the human nations. It's also, quite possibly the oldest human nation having existed since the late Fourth Age. Its capital city is Varrock and is currently ruled by King Roald Remanis III. Arguably, Anachronia is also a territory under the control of Misthalin despite not being apart of the proper kingdom. Other locations are also stated to exist such as Lumford, but are at least currently inaccessible due to the Space Compression in the game. Despite Roald's kingship there are at least a few unaligned political factions that live within Misthalin complete with their own territory, most notably the barbarians of the Barbarian Village.

Naturally, there will be spoilers here, some of which may be unmarked. Proceed only with utmost caution. You Have Been Warned.

Archaeology Campus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/archaeology_campus.png

Just east of Varrock exists the Archaeology Campus. The campus plays a crucial role in the Archaeology Skill, with it being part of its tutorial. It also possesses the Mysterious Monolith note  and the screening station. This territory contains the Archaeology Guild, the Dig Site and the Exam Centre.

    In General
  • Adventurer Archaeologist: Downplayed, since for the most part the archaeologists actually do proper archaeology, but it does turn up every now and again. This is mostly seen in the fact that they destroy various artifacts in the pursuit of restoring another such as the archaeology materials, many of which would be seen as artifacts themselves in the real world.
  • Scienceville: As the name would suggest all if not most people at the Archaeology Campus are archaeologists and teachers of archaeology.

    Anthony (Tony) B. Robinson
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/guildmaster_tony.png
The Guildmaster for the Archaeology Guild.

The guildmaster of the "Archaeology Guild" and an archaeologist at the Varrock Dig Site. He was last seen disappearing into the "Mysterious Monolith" and his current status is unknown. After his disappearance the player gains access to Tony's office.

    Doug Deeping
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/doug_deeping.png
This person is working on the site.

One of the archaeologists working at the Dig site. He plays a minor role in The Dig Site quest and is featured as a clue in a Clue Scroll in the Treasure Trails Distractions and Diversions.

    Lottie Reiniger
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/acting_guildmaster_reiniger.png
She's an expert on the Third Age.

An expert on the Third Age and since the disappearance of the Guildmaster Anthony B. Robinson the acting Guildmaster of the Archaeology Guild. As the acting Guildmaster she helped to train new recruits; including the World Guardian. She plays a small role in the quest Heartstealer, were she is unwittingly used as part of a distraction for the player and Caelyn Kadaan. Lottie is also a member of the Silhouette note , at least until she went rogue due to the danger of Zaros's plans.

Barbarian Village (Gunnarsgrunn)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/barbarian_village.png

Also known as "Barbarians Tribes", the village is to the West of Varrock and to the south of Edgeville. It owes its origins to an invasion note  that took place during years 42-62 of the Fifth Age in which numerous Fremennik clan leaders tried to conquer the mainland. The invasion eventually ended when both their numbers and supplies began to get low. Gunnar; the leader of the invasion force, then established the settlement with the intention of rebuilding the army, but with the "Wizards' Tower" burning down in year 70 they apparently lost their reason to continue. Nearly a 100 years later the descendants of the invaders now live peacefully with their neighbors despite the resurface of magical practices.

Despite existing within the Kingdom of Misthalin it is not under it's jurisdiction.

    In General/Barbarians
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/barbarian_standard.png
Barbarian Standard

The descendants of Gunnar's army and offshoots of the Fremennik. Most of them when spoken to respond to players with hostility and try to get the player to fight them.

    Chieftain Gunthor
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chieftain_gunthor.png
A heavily built barbarian with an air of power and authority.

The chieftain of the Barbarian Village, grandson of Gunnar and father of Gudrun. He plays a major role in the quest Gunnar's Ground. In the quest he has to be convinced that the village is a settlement and not a war camp, as well as allowing his daughter to court an outerlander (Dororan).

  • Affluent Ascetic: Implied, at the end of the quest Gunnar's Ground both Dororan and Gudrun move into a house at the edge of Varrock which was given to them by Gunthor. Gudrun believes that her father bought it for them, which if true would suggest that he's quite wealthy.
  • Decomposite Character: Of the now removed Character Gunthor The Brave, both of which share the same name and are the barbarian chieftains. The other character made from this trope is Haakon The Champion.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Wears a single shoulder pad on his left shoulder.
  • Head Hat: He wears the head of some animal, probably a bear.

    Dororan
After the events of Gunnar's Ground Dororan moves to Varrock and as such can be found here.

    Gudrun Gunthorsdottir
After the events of Gunnar's Ground Gudrun moves to Varrock and as such can be found here.

    Gunnar
The leader of an invasion force from the Fremennik Province. Under his leadership, much of Asgarnia, Kandarin and Misthalin were destroyed. Eventually, his forces dwindled and he built a war camp so he can rebuild his forces and eventually launch another attack. However, due to various events he never launched another attack and his war camp eventually became the Barbarian Village known today. He is the grandfather of the village's current chieftain, Gunthor and is the great grandfather of Gudrun.
  • The Dreaded: Implied, it's noted that when his army was at it's weakest no one still wanted to go after him and his army and pretty much just let him make his war camp outside of Varrock.
  • Posthumous Character: He died long ago, but his actions continue to influence the people of Gielinor, most notably in the quest Gunnar's Ground.
  • The Warlord: As the leader of an entire invasion force he was this.

    Haakon The Champion
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/haakon_the_champion.png
A mighty warrior, Haakon is powerfully concerned for his tribe.

The advisor to Chieftain Gunthor and the strongest barbarian in the village. He also plays a small role in the RuneScape novels, were he served as a bodyguard to the visiting wizard Castimir and saved his villages priestess Arisha from some assassins.

  • Bald of Authority: Downplayed, since he's not The Leader. He is; however, the advisor to the leader and as such very likely has some authority in the village.
  • Cool Sword: He wields a two handed sword with jagged edges.
  • Decomposite Character: Of the now removed Character Gunthor The Brave, both of which are the bosses of the "Barbarian Village", share similar examine text and being larger then normal humans. The other character made from this trope is Chieftain Gunthor.
  • Optional Boss: Players have the option of fighting him.

    Litara
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/litara.png
Litara, a barbarian explorer.

A barbarian woman and explorer. She introduces players to the Stronghold Of Security as she waits for her brother to return from it.

  • The Cameo: She appeared as a playable unit in the Saradomin Strikes campaign on Armies of Gielinor in the since shutdown FunOrb.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Along with Gudrun she's easily one of the friendliest of the barbarians and she's very concerned about her missing brother.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: It's hard to tell, but her chathead appears to have blue eyes, which goes well with her Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold trope.
  • Palette Swap: Downplayed, since there are some minor differences, but Litara heavily resembles many of the other women in the village.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: She's referred to as an explorer in her examine text, she never does any exploring. The closest she does is help players get to the Stronghold Of Security to explore.

    Litara's Brother
Probably Litara's Brother

A Barbarian explorer and the brother of Litara. He went down in the Stronghold Of Security after hearing from a miner; who previously fell in, speak of treasure, he hasn't been seen since. It's subtlety implies that he's the dead explorer that can be found upon first entering the Stronghold Of Security.

  • Fictional Document: If he's the dead explorer first found when entering the Stronghold Of Security, then he's the author of the "Stronghold Notes", which can be found by searching his corpse.
  • Posthumous Character: If he's the dead explorer first found when entering the Stronghold Of Security, he's this by default.
  • Shout-Out: If he's the dead explorer first found when entering the Stronghold Of Security, he's one to Link wearing what appears to be his hat. His examine text also might be a reference to his game The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Draynor Manor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/draynor_manor.png

A haunted mansion owned by Count Draynor just north of Draynor Village. It was found by Count Draynor sometime around the Third Age. Though arguably a part of Draynor Village it's massive size, distance from the village and the fact it may actually predate the village leads it to being treated as a separate territory.

    In General
  • Haunted House: All the characters can be found on or near the Draynor Manor property.
  • Monster Mash: Many of the characters there are monsters or are at least based off of characters affiliated with monsters, like the Mad Scientists.

    Animated Chairs
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2023_03_15_at_82026_pm.png

Animated chairs that exist within Draynor Manor, not much is know about them.

  • Animate Inanimate Object: They're chairs that can move, typically to follow players around.
  • Don't Look At Me: They stop moving when the player they're following turns to look at it.
  • Stalker without a Crush: Since they're chairs we can safely assume that they have no romantic or sexual desire for the players they're following.

    Ava
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ava_7.png
She's watching you.

A scientist and the assistant to Professor Oddenstein, following the completion of the Ernest The Chicken quest. Upon meeting her players will the option to help her improve upon her home; in particular her bed which she apparently can't get any sleep on, agreeing to this starts the Animal Magnetism quest. Upon completing her quest she rewards the player with either her Attractor or Accumulator depending on the players Ranged level. She also will begin to run a shop called Ava's Odds And Ends after her quest. She also plays a small role in the quests Do No Evil and Once Upon A Time An Gielinor: Flashback. She also sometimes appears in Distractions and Diversions Court Cases.

  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Downplayed, Ava's a scientist who invents things all the while wearing bunny slippers. Of course it should also be noted that she seems to do all of her own personal work in the privacy of her own bedroom.
  • Color-Coded Eyes: Inverted, Ava's chathead appears to show her with green eyes; a color closely affiliated with life and health, yet much of her research seems to involve the undead.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: She invented her Attractornote  as a reward for the player after completing the quest Animal Magnetism. Players can also upgrade or replace a lost Attractor with level 50 Ranged with Ava's Accumulator and again with Ava's Alerter with a partial completion of the quest Do No Evil.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's very quick to belittle or even insult the player, but is also happy to help them.
  • Labcoat of Science and Medicine: Is openly acknowledged as a scientist and inventor.
  • Mad Scientist: Downplayed, since despite the fact that she's a scientist and preforms some questionable experiments, but appears to be quite sane and even shows signs of Everyone Has Standards in regards to her boss Professor Oddenstein with the whole Ernest scandal.
  • Messy Hair: As opposed to her character model, Ava's chathead shows her with what appears to be this. This could be to help portray her as a Mad Scientist, show that she's not getting enough sleep or both.
  • Nice Girl: Discussed and defied, all in one conversation.
Player: "What's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?"
Ava: "I'm not a nice girl, I'm a respectable scientist researching the interactions between ghosts and the forces of pure science. I took over the position of assistant to the Professor upstairs, although, to be honest, his methods are somewhat eccentric. Did you hear about that Ernest scandal?"
  • Quest Giver: She gives the player the job that's the Animal Magnetism quest.
  • Sleep Deprivation: Though not the worst example of this trope, prior to completing the quest Animal Magnetism Ava's dialogue suggests that she's not get enough sleep due to having a bad bed. Refusing to help her also has her mention using Professor Oddenstein's patented sleeping aid, which she claims bruises her head.
  • Sliding Scale of Undead Regeneration: She states that she can restore the undead chickens used in her devices back to health/unhealth.
Player: "I need another arrow-attracting device, please."
Ava: "Well, luckily for you, they have a habit of returning to me when people lose them, so I have some spares. They are homing chickens, it seems. I'll need 999 gp, however, for the expenses involved in restoring the poor creature to health, or unhealth, or whatever."
  • Tap on the Head: Implied, but it could just be sarcasm about Professor Oddenstein's patented sleeping aid.
"Very well, I suppose I'll just have to resort to the Professor's patented sleeping aid in order to get some rest. It does so bruise my head, though."
  • You're Insane!: She'll question if the player is this if they try to give her a non-chicken related item on her during the quest Animal Magnetism.
"I'm not sure what you are trying to do; are you sure you aren't slightly deranged?"

    Count Draynor Drakan
For information on Count Draynor go to here

    Ernest
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chicken_ernest.png
A strange chicken.
After Ernest the Chicken quest.

The fiancée of Veronica. Ernest and his fiancée were making their way to Falador to get married, but got lost before they could get there. Finding themselves outside Draynor Manor Ernest went in to ask for directions. Upon entering he met Professor Oddenstein who turned him into a chicken with his new invention the pouletmorph machine. Thankfully though he turned back at the conclusion of the Ernest the Chicken quest. Later on he files a case against Professor Oddenstein for turning him into a chicken, which can be seen in the Distractions and Diversions Court Cases.

  • Forced Transformation: He was turned into a chicken by Professor Oddenstein with his new invention the pouletmorph machine.
  • Foolish Husband, Responsible Wife: Downplayed, since he has yet to marry Veronica. However, they're quickly shaping up to becoming this trope with all the trouble Ernest gets into.
  • No Sense of Direction: He's always getting lost. Most notably his trip to Falador as mentioned in the Ernest the Chicken quest and "Daemonheim" as mentioned in the Distractions and Diversions Court Cases.
  • Quitting to Get Married: Veronica mentions in the Distractions and Diversions Court Cases that he used to be an adventurer, but is now settling down due to their up coming marriage.

    Helda
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/witch_44.png
A witch. The hat's a dead giveaway.

A witch that lives in Draynor Manor and the owner of Maemi. She apparently used to shove children into ovens, but has since went to anger management class. She also knows how to make magnets, which are required in the Animal Magnetism quest.

    Maemi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pet_cat_black_pet.png
A witch's black cat.

Helda's pet cat.

    Professor Oddenstein
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/professor_oddenstein.png
A mad scientist if I ever saw one!

The resident Mad Scientist of the manor. He's usually up on the top floor of the manor where he works on his inventions. Some of his inventions are the pouletmorph machine, Time Machine, various security systems and a portal/teleportation machine. He plays a major role in the Ernest the Chicken quest, being the very reason why Ernest was turned into a chicken through the use of his pouletmorph machine and helping the player turn him back by fixing his machine. Later on a case was filed against him by Ernest for turning him into a chicken, which can be seen in the Distractions And Diversion Court Cases.

He also has a younger brother called Doctor Oddenstein and an assistant named Ava.

  • Absent-Minded Professor: He seems to be a little out of touch with the world. A great example would be in the Ernest the Chicken quest where he doesn't seem to understand why Veronica wouldn't want to marry Ernest as a chicken.
    Professor Oddenstein: "Who's Veronica?"
Player: "Ernest's fiancée. She probably doesn't want to marry a chicken."
Professor Oddenstein: "Oh, I dunno. She could have free eggs for breakfast every morning."
  • Einstein Hair: Has some wild hair, in fact his entire head appears to have been modeled after Albert Einstein.
  • Labcoat of Science and Medicine: His examine text openly calls him a Mad Scientist and he is an inventor.
  • Mad Scientist: His examine text openly calls him one and is generally seen as unstable by other characters, such as his assistant Ava.
  • Maker of Monsters: Discussed, he mentions that he once made a machine that can generate monsters.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Has a younger brother who looks just like him.
  • Time Machine: Discussed, the Professor mentions having made one at some point.
  • The Transmogrifier: His invention the pouletmorph machine can turn people into chickens and back again. according to the witch Aggie he also once had a machine that turned people into flying fish.

    Undead Trees
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/edfgh_4.png
Its bark is worse than its swipe.

A unusual type of undead found around Draynor Manor. They cannot be cutdown or harmed with regular hatchets like regular trees, instead a Blessed Hatchet and a level 18 in the Slayer skill is needednote . They play a role in the Animal Magnetism quest, were their twigs are used to help make Ava's Attractor. They may be the result of the magical properties in their soil, but since this information came from a witch in a removed quest note  the canonicalness of the information is now in doubt.

  • Non-Human Undead: As the name states they're undead trees.
  • Undead Abomination: As stated they are undead trees, but unlike their living counterparts they can attack people, which suggests that there's more to them.
    • The fact players need a unique weapon; a Blessed Hatchet, to cut them down makes this even more apparent.
  • When Trees Attack: They attack any nearby players.

    Victor
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/victor_goblin.png
Often seen wandering around Death's office.

A goblin that can be found right outside of Draynor Manor, near Death's Office. Despite being a goblin he's shown himself to be rather intelligent. He's also attracted to the witch Wendy, but fears getting rejected by her, well aware of how most people find goblins ugly.

  • The Grotesque: Fully acknowledges that goblins are seen as ugly by humans and believes that ruins his chances with the witch Wendy.
  • I Am a Monster: Discussed and Downplayed, Victor's discussion with the player shows that he knows that most people see goblins as monsters and the fact bothers him since he believes that it hurts his chances with Wendy, however e doesn't appear to suffer any self-loathing.
  • Nice Guy: Outside of the Dorgeshuun he's easily one of the friendliest goblins in the game, having polite and friendly conversations with the player.

Draynor Village

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/newdraynor.png

A village that exists between Falador and Lumbridge. It's unknown when the village formed, but is all but guaranteed to have gained it's name from Draynor Manor note , which is located just North of it. The village is known for its great farm land. Several problems exist in the village though, it used to be terrorized by the vampyre named Count Draynor Drakan up until he was slayed by the player in the quest "Vampyre Slayer", it's home to The Skulls; a violent gang, and a recent bank robbery.

    In General
  • Bank Robbery: A major bank robbery happened recently and many characters are either investigating it or talking about it.
  • Halloweentown: Has a history of becoming this around October.

    Aggie
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aggie_9.png
A witch.

A resident witch in Draynor Village, who appears to make a living by crafting and selling dyes. She appears to be a well liked and active member of the village's society. One thing she does for the village is try to protect its citizens from Count Draynor. She also has a apprentice named Jimmy The Chisel.

  • Cute Witch / Hot Witch: Discussed, in the first issue of Postbag From The Hedge, Aggie claims that she looks good for a witch.
  • Eye of Newt: Apparently took one of Newton'snote  eyes and used it to make a Super attack potion.
  • Flying Broomstick: Subverted, though she clearly has a magic broom as seen in the Rebuilding Edgeville miniquest, it does not appear to be used as a form of transportation by Aggie..
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She's a friendly blond witch, who shows concern for people and tries to protect the people of Draynor Village from a vampyre.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Zig-Zagged, we never actually see her in a fight, but it's been implied that she's faced Count Draynor numerous times in the past in an effort to protect the people of the village. She's also capable of warding off Evil Bob as mentioned in the first issue of Postbag From The Hedge.
  • Magic Cauldron: Has a cauldron fill with a potion she refuses to identify and can be seen casting a spell at it when players purchase some of her dyes.
  • Robe and Wizard Hat: Wears some green robes and a green witch's hat.
  • The Transmogrifier: She openly admits that she has turned people into frogs in the past and in the Rebuilding Edgeville miniquest she'll temporarily turn the player into a pig if she catches them trying to steal her magic broom.

    Diango
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/diango.png
A toy-seller who looks after people's toys for them.

A merchant that sells toys in Draynor Village. He first appeared as a April Fools' Day joke. Since then he also gained other functions in the game such as being used to redeem item codes and most famously being a sort of bank for most holiday and commemorative event items.

  • April Fools' Day: First appeared in game on April 1st 2004 for a joke and has been used for other April Fools' Day jokes since then.
    • In his first appearance he was stated to sell horses, which were heavily requested. Those that went to him would later find out that he was actually selling toy horseys.
    • In 2005 dragon platesnote  were stated to have been released in the game. Instead not only were they spinning plates with a picture of a dragon on them, they were also actually released several days later in Diango's store.
    • In 2008 Diango started selling Dragon Kitesnote , they turned out to actually be kites with a picture of a dragon on them.
    • In 2012 green p-hats were stated to be lying around in "Falador", "Lumbridge" and "Varrock", these hat were implied to be Green Partyhats. In actuality though they turned out to be actual peas attached to a string that are meant to be worn on ones head. After April Fools' Day they could found in Diango's store.
  • Bubble Gun: The Bubble Makers he sells are more or less this.
  • Cowboy: Currently subverted, but when he first appeared he looked like one to go with the April Fools' Day joke of him selling horses. He still apparently talks like one though, as seen when he greets the player.
"Howdy there, partner."

    Dionysius
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wise_old_man.png
A venerable and rich sage.

More commonly known as the Wise Old Man, Dionysius is a retired adventurer who resides in Draynor Village. He was born in Varrock and became a devoted follower of Saradomin, he was even offered the opportunity to study on the Island Entrana with it's priests. Instead of excepting the offer though he instead chose to travel the land instead. To this day the influence he's made in Gielinor through his adventures can still be seen today and is still pretty well known in the land.

Despite his fame and success Dionysius grew to become bitter, believing that he was not properly rewards for his deeds. These feeling likely worsened after his ex-girlfriend Zenevivia stole his player-owned house, forcing him to move to Draynor Village. It was here that he chose to rob the Draynor Village bank, an event which lead him to gaining his famous blue partyhat. Despite committing this crime he has not be apprehend or is even currently being pursued.

Despite everything though he is still considered a hero to many throughout Gielinor and is happy to help the player in many ways, such as in quests and cleaning out their bank of useless items. Players are also able trade artifacts with him or preform tasks for him.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Zenevivia, Xenia, and Elsie address him as "Dissy".
  • Bank Robbery: His most infamous caper in which he attacked and robbed Draynor Bank, and the same incident where he got his blue party hat.
  • Battle Couple: With Zenevivia.
  • Camera Abuse: When he robs the bank, he smashes the camera to end the cutscene.
  • Crossover: His Old School look is a skin for Merlin in the game Smite.
  • Dude, Where's My Reward?: Feels that the people of Gielinor owe him compensation after heroic acts in the past.
  • The Fundamentalist: Downplayed, He's a strict follower of Saradomin, but at worst only seems to bully followers of other religions, in particular Zamorakians.
  • Kid Hero: He started adventuring at the age of 15.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: His attempt to rob the Wizards' Tower alongside Zenevivia goes well at first... until Traiborn somehow summons a Thingummywut, which overwhelms the pair with a barrage of Earth Surges. With no hope of fighting back against said monstrosity, they quickly teleport out of harm's way.
  • Retired Badass: Used to be a hero, but now resides in a cluttered house full of stolen treasures in Draynor Village.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Supernatural Powers!: Abuses his powers to murder innocents and break into the Draynor Village bank simply because he feels he is entitled to a greater reward. It's also hinted that his next target is the Wizards' Tower to the south, which he and his girlfriend Zenevivia promptly go and attack after they are reunited. It fails miserably.
  • Unscrupulous Hero: Despite being a good guy, he has no qualms about using his power to break the law for his own gain.
  • Walking the Earth: In his youth, he wandered the globe in search of adventure.

    Maggie
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maggie_34.png
A young witch.

A traveling witch, she first seen with her caravan south of Falador during the 2008 Halloween event, before moving to west of the Legends' Guild and finally a little north of Draynor Village. She also apparently makes really good goulash, which is magical in nature. She owns two skeletal oxen named Babe and Norman, and has an apprentice named Wendy.

    Morgan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/morgan_20.png
He looks scared.

A devout follower of Saradomin who moved to Draynor Village with his wife Maris. He is justifiably terrified of the vampyre Count Draynor and as such refuses to leave his house. Eventually he manages to convince the player into slaying the vampyre.

  • Informed Poverty: Possibly Justified, Morgan claims that both his wife and him just moved to Draynor Village and are suffering some bad luck so they can't afford to move out because of the vampyre. It's also Downplayed Trope because they clearly can still afford basic living expenses.
  • Mission from God: Discussed, Morgan believes that the player was sent to him by Saradomin to slay the vampyre Count Draynor.
  • Quest Giver: Of the quest "Vampyre Slayer".
  • Starting a New Life: Him and wife just moved to Draynor Village and they regret it until the end of the quest "Vampyre Slayer".
  • Vampyres Hate Garlic: He was told to keep some garlic by Dr Harlow for this reason. He seems to be unaware of the connection to vampyres, only that it will help him against possible threats.

    Mysterious Old Man
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mysterious_old_man.png
Also odd and weird, but definitely not wise.

A former random event. He's a very weird old man who used to abduct people; mostly players, and force them to play his games. Now though he claims to be retired, though he apparently wants the Wise Old Man's house since that's house he grew up in and he can't fulling enjoy his retirement without it. Despite his retirement he still enjoys talking about his time as a Random Event his other "random" friends.

  • Accidental Hero: In "Recipe For Disaster" he unknowingly saves Duke Horacio from the Culinoromancer by abducting him for one of his games.
  • Birds of a Feather: His friendship with many of the other retired Random Event characters seems to be based off of this.
  • Inconvenient Summons: Like many of the other retired RandomEvents he often teleported players away for some task. Ironically he can become a victim of this as seen below.
  • Irony: After a long history of abducting players he ends up getting abducted by another ex Random Event Evil Bob, after the player asks him about his abductions.
  • Random Event: Currently Subverted, but he used to be one of the game's Random Events. Now though he simply asks about both his time as an event and other events. Listed below are some of the things he would do during an event, though typically they would start with him teleporting in front of a player.
    • Sometimes he would just teleport in front of the player and wait for the player to speak to him. Upon being spoken too he will reward the player with a random item. Though that don't speak to him get teleported to a random location by him.
    • Sometimes when he would appear he would teleport players outside of a maze. Players that would make it to the center of the maze would get a prize and get sent back to where they originally were. Faster players got better prizes.
    • After appear he would sometimes give players a Strange Box, which when opened gave the player a puzzle to solve. Doing anything to the box, but solve the puzzle would cause another box to appear in the player's inventory, with only the original box containing a prize.
    • He would sometimes teleport players to the Mime, Pinball and Surprise Exam! events. Though he appears to be the master of the Pinball event.
  • Teleportation: As a Random Event it was shown that he had the ability to teleport and teleport players to other locations and though he no longer is a random event, it's mention and shown that he still has these abilities. Notably this can be seen in the quest Recipe For Disaster.

    Ned
A retired sailor who works as a rope maker in Draynor Village.
  • Dare to Be Badass: He's fully aware that sailing to Crandor is practically a death sentence. But for the chance to be at the helm of a ship on the seas again, he accepts to captain the Lady Lumbridge to the lair of Elvarg.
  • Father Neptune: Ned is still an experienced sailor, despite now being in retirement as few crews want to take him on due to his age. He's also the only sailor willing to set sail for Crandor during "Dragon Slayer".

    Ruantun
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ruantun.png
Luckily, I can't see much of his face.

A mysterious individual who lives in the sewers of Draynor Village.

  • Affably Evil: How evil he is is currently up to debate, but for a vampyre that presumably has fed off of other races he's surprisingly friendly and is even willing to let the player use his anvil when asked.
  • Ambiguously Evil: Living in the sewers and his inhuman appearance don't make him look particularly innocent and that before the player finds out that up until the quest Vampyre Slayer he served as Count Draynor's assistant. That said he doesn't seem to actually do anything evil and is surprisingly friendly to the player.
  • The Blacksmith: Implied and Downplayed, it's been shown in the Desert Treasure quest that he knows how to smith since he makes a silver pot in it. That said that's the only thing seen that he makes and regular dialogue has him state that he hasn't done much smithing in a long time.
Player: "Can I use your anvil?"
Ruantun: "Of courssse you may… I have very little ussse for it nowadaysss…"
    Player: "Uh… Thanks, I guess."
  • Friendly Neighborhood Vampyre: Downplayed, as a servantnote  of Count Draynor he probably had to do some pretty bad things, but apparently when left to his own devices he doesn't really do much and is even a little friendly when spoken to.
  • Mysterious Past: Not much is known about Ruantun, but a dedicated player can discover in Morytania that not only that he's a vampyre but that he's also a servantnote  of Count Draynor.
  • Not Quite Human: Those that meet him can easily tell that he's not human with his odd skin color and slit pupils. Dedicated players can find out in Morytania that he's actually a vampyre.
  • Our Vampyres are Different: Zig-Zagged, In-Universe Ruantun is probably no different than any other vampyre in the setting, however outside of it though he stands out as one of the few vampyres that haven't received a graphic update since RuneScape 2. It's possible though that this was intentionally done to not make his true nature obvious.
  • Shout-Out: Possibly two.
    • He speaks in an exaggerated Romanian accent, which was likely started in the film Dracula (1931).
    • Just as Count Draynor is one to Count Dracula, Ruantun is likely one to Renfield with the reveal of being Count Drainer's assistant, which is revealed in the quest Desert Treasure.
  • Sssssnake Talk: Speaks in an exaggerated Romanian accent, which might be a Shout-Out as seen above.
"You ssshould not be down here..."
  • To Serve Man: As a vampyre he undoubtedly drank the blood of people and indeed may still be drinking human blood.

    Trogs
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/trogs.png
A feisty cat.

Wendy's pet cat, which she turned purple. He was first seen as part of Maggie's caravan south of Falador during the 2008 Halloween event, before moving to west of the Legends' Guild and finally a little north of Draynor Village. 'Fraidy cat from the Dimension Of Disaster quest may in fact be his Alternate Self in that reality based off of the information provided by his examine text.

  • All Witches Have Cats: He's the pet cat of Wendy.
  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: A purple cat.
  • Cats Are Magic: Just barely qualifies since it owes the color of it's fur to a magic potion, appropriately named the "Magic unguent".
  • Familiar: He's pretty much this to Wendy.
  • Locked into Strangeness: He was just a regular cat with tortoiseshell fur, but had his fur permanently dyed purple by the witch Wendy with her magic unguent. Thankfully he admits that he grew to like the color.
Player: "So, how do you like being purple?"
Trogs: "Well, I felt rather conspicuous at first, but now I've grown to rather like the colour."
    Player: "That's lucky."
Trogs: "Quite. As far as I know, Wendy doesn't know how to reverse the process."
  • Sapient Pet: Like all cats, Trogs is fully sapient, you just don't find out until you get an amulet of catspeak.

    Turoth
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/turoth_megs_cases_all_socks_5.png
He's one small leg short!

A talking turoth that first appeared as a part one of Meg's Cases during the Mega May event in 2016. The case was called Turoth Reports Theft of a Sock, were it's revealed that the Turoth purchased a pack of socks from Thessalia Nitter only to have sock missing from his pack. Thankfully through the players efforts Thessalia realizes that too Turoth a pack of sock is made up of three instead of a pair like most people. Turoth is then given his third sock and the Turoth Reports Theft of a Sock case is closed.

Oddly enough though after the Mega May event ended most things affiliated with it were removed from the game; including all of Meg's Cases, Turoth remained though making him a artifact of the entire event.

  • A Dog Named "Dog": Downplayed, he's only ever been identified by his species' name.
  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Zig-Zagged, since it's not quite clear what exactly a turoth is, are they an animal or a race of sapient beings? But, as you can see he likes to wear socks, in fact they're actually a major part of his character.
  • The Artifact: Though he still exists in the game and thanks the player for their assistance in Turoth Reports Theft of a Sock of Meg's Cases in Mega May, the event is over and aside from Turoth everything has been removed. This means that for a player to understand anything about the character; including why he's thanking the player, the player would have to either participated in the event, ask another player who participated or do some research online.
"Thank you for correcting the great injustice!"
  • Bizarre Alien Limbs: Like all turoths he has three legs.
  • Civilized Animal: Zig-Zagged, since it's not quite clear what exactly a turoth is, are they an animal or a race of sapient beings? What is known is that this turoth is the only known example of a civilized turoth; talking, wearing clothes and even using money, all other turoths seen seem to be nothing more than animals wandering in caves and dungeons.
  • Hand Puppet: The sock on his right foot/hand appears to be one since it has button eyes.
  • Talking Animal: Zig-Zagged, since it's not quite clear what exactly a turoth is, are they an animal or a race of sapient beings? If they are animals though, it should be noted that this one can talk.

    Wendy
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wendy_03.png
A young witch.

Maggie's apprentice, she first seen with her caravan south of Falador during the 2008 Halloween event, before moving to west of the Legends' Guild and finally a little north of Draynor Village. At some point she discovered how to turn cats purple and is willing to do it to the player's cat like she did to her own cat Trogs.

  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Though not to the extent of Maggie, Wendy wears an uneven skirt, a belt that doesn't face forward and a ornament; possibly a buckle, on the right side of her hat.
  • Hot Gypsy Woman: Is fully acknowledged as an attractive woman and appears to be a RuneScape equivalent to a gypsy.
  • Hot Witch: Well Victor; the goblin just North of her, seems to think so.
  • Magic Cauldron: Downplayed, since the cauldron appears to belong to Maggie, but presumably has access to it since she's Maggie's apprentice.
  • Robe and Wizard Hat: Wears a witch's hat.

Edgeville

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/edgeville.png

Originally called the Ghost Town in RuneScape Classic, Edgeville is a town that exists at the edge of the Wilderness, hence the name. It's a very popular stop for players going into the "Wilderness" or entering "Varrock's Grand Exchange".

Lore wise Edgeville historically was known as the town "Paddewwa" and later simply the "Ghost Town"note . In the year of 161 of the Fifth Age a great conflict happened called the Edgeville Incident; back when it was still called the "Ghost Town", the conflicted started when the wizard criminal Solus Dellagar turned on his Zamorakian allies and attacking the "Ghost Town's" few citizens before he was apprehended. It's also relatively new territory in the Kingdom of Misthalin having been incorporated in it sometime in the year of 169 of the Fifth Age by King Roaldnote  and was given it's current name. Within the same year it was later attacked by three dragonkin and was only rebuilt in the sixth year of the Sixth Age by the World Guardian.

    Annette Kadaan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/annette_kadaan_5.png
She has an air of nobility about her, despite her profession.
How she appears at the gala in the Heartstealer quest.

The eldest daughter of the Despaard family of Varrockian nobles. Annette had a very strained relationship with her family, one that finally broke when her mother tried pressuring her into marrying a Lord Clutterbuck. Thankfully one day she discovered the master thief Caelyn Kadaan attempting to steal from her family's vault and hit it off. Annette Despaard then chose to go with Caelyn on her adventures and even renounced her nobility. Sometime later the two eventually married.

  • Blue Blood: Used to be a part of the noble family Despaard.
  • Bodyguard Crush: Probably more then a crush at this point since she's her own wife's bodyguard.
  • Dance-Off: Has one with the player in the quest Heartstealer, with the promise of rewarding the player with a drink token if they win. Thankfully she only did this for fun and gives the player the token at the end.
  • Gayngster: She's a lesbian who assists a master thief.
  • Lady of Adventure: Left her noble family to go on adventures with Caelyn Kadaan, but is still noted for having an air of nobility about her as stated in her examine text.
  • Proper Lady: Downplayed, since she likely was this to some extent before meeting Caelyn Kadaan and shedding her nobility. Even after this she still shows some traits of this such as being smart, loyal and strong.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Downplayed, as former nobility she was at the very least played the role of a Proper Lady at some point, but became a surprisingly capable bodyguard shortly after leaving.
  • Smoke Out: Makes and uses smoke bombs.

    Caelyn Kadaan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/800px_caelyn_kadaan.png
The mysterious, the daring, world-renowned master thief: Caelyn Kadaan!
How she appears at the gala in the Heartstealer quest.

Having grown up as an orphan in Varrock with no one to care for her a young Caelyn Kadaan was forced to resort to theft in order to survive. Despite this she often used the extra money she gained for philanthropic purposes, giving to others what she couldn't while growing up. Overtime though she moved towards far more profitable heists. Her first big heist was stealing the contents with a vault owned by the varrockian nobles of the Despaard family. Interestingly she was caught in the act by the families eldest, Annette Despaard.

To Caelyn's surprise though Annette did not call her families' guards and instead chose to simply talk with her. The two quickly bonded and at the end Annette chose to runaway with Caelyn. The two became partners in crime and eventually even married each other.

  • Character Tic: Flipping a coin and catching it appear to be one for her.
  • Expy: She appears to be one to Carmen Sandiego.
    • Is a master thief.
    • Wears clothes similar to the style of Carmen, though black instead of red and no coat.
      • Though she does wear a dated version of Carmen's Iconic Outfit in the quest Heartstealer, with only difference being a masquerade mask.
    • Pulling off numerous impossible thefts.
  • Gayngster: She's a lesbian and a master thief.
  • Just Like Robin Hood: She donates a portion of her earning to the less fortunate.
  • Shout-Out:
Curator Haig Halen: "Ah, you must be Caelyn Kadaan."
Caelyn Kadaan: "You've heard of me?"
Curator Haig Halen: "I've heard that you are loud, arrogant, and surprisingly incompetent for a criminal of such notoriety."
Caelyn Kadaan: "… But you have heard of me."
  • Smoke Out: Makes and uses smoke bombs.

    David Bartholomew Karloff
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/evil_dave_shadow_of_the_storm.png
He seems to like wearing black.

More commonly known as Evil Dave, he is a Zamorakian who is bizarrely obsessed with evilness. He lives in his mother's basement.

  • Bad Is Good and Good Is Bad: He's very gung-ho about his evil-ness and shows it by speaking this way.
  • Basement-Dweller: He still lives in his mom's basement.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: When he ends up in the Adventurer's body, he hopes to impress Zamorak by involving himself in Zamorak's ancient dispute with Saradomin. It didn't occur to him just how serious the situation might get, and he runs away in horror when it leads to Saradomin and Zamorak's knights getting killed.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: He can be rather out there with his evilness spiel.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: A possibly unintentional one: During "Evil Dave's Big Day Out", he somehow manages to get into Zamorak's hidden base beneath Daemonheim all by himself. While the game heavily recommends you complete Dishonor Among Thieves first (which gives the player an object to teleport there), it's possible to start the quest without doing that one first, meaning the player has no way into the base. This means that Dave managed to fend off the horrors of Daemonheim, solve a ton of puzzles, and descend a grand total of 60 floors, all by himself. In what could have only been a few hours.
  • A Day in the Limelight: He's the focus of the "Evil Dave's Big Day Out" quest, where he body swaps with the Adventurer after a ritual goes wrong, and goes to meet with Zamorak in the guise of the World Guardian, hoping the god of chaos will reciprocate his "evilness".
  • Girls with Moustaches: During the "Evil Dave's Big Day Out" quest, his body is temporarily converted into one as a disguise so that the adventurer can sneak into the city while stuck in his body.
  • Harmless Villain: According to Gypsy Aris, this is the reason Evil Dave is part of the Lumbridge Castle Secret Society. They're contractually obligated to have a Token Evil Teammate, but they didn't want anyone who could cause actual problems.
  • Inept Mage: Has been trying to summon demons in his basement, but all he has managed to summon are harmless Hellrats.
  • Large Ham: Just listen to his ramblings about evil.
  • Nice Guy: In spite of his obsession with evilness, he's a great guy, and can't stand violence (which makes him faint) or vandalism.
  • Poke the Poodle: This is his brand of evil. When he's confronted with genuine evil, he's rather disturbed. This is the reason why he was chosen to be part of the Lumbridge Council, as the council in question needed to include a dark wizard and they did not desire one that was a major threat such as Solus Dellagar.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Spicy Stew, or as he calls it "EVIL STEW OF DOOM." In Evil Dave's subquest of Recipe for Disaster the player must figure out exactly right amount of spices to make his favourite stew though a trial and error puzzle.
  • Your Answer to Everything: His livelihood heavily revolves around harping on about evilness.

    Moldark, Emissary of Zamorak
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/moldark_emissary_of_zamorak.png
The emissary of Zamorak.

One of the God Emissaries of Gielinor, with himself being the emissary of the god Zamorak. His goal is to convert the people to his religion and spread the word of Zamorak. Players that join him will receive a Banner Of Zamorak, the Book Of The Gods, the title [Player Name] Of Zamorak and various tasks.

  • Bald of Evil: Subverted, though his religion is questionable he himself does not do anything inherently evil.
  • Bald Mystic: Likely to show a form of religious enlightenment.
  • Horned Humanoid: Invoked, Moldark actually subverts this trope, but his robes have some sort of ornament that imitates Zamora's horns.
  • Religion of Evil: Downplayed, the religion is about using chaos and destruction to strengthen and better oneself. That said a lot of evil individuals are followers of Zamorak, not to mention Zamorak himself whose status as a God of Evil is up for debate.

    Nikkel
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nikkel.png
Support Team Demon!

A imp that co-hosts the Wilderness Flash Events Distractions And Diversions with the Wandering Ramokee. He believes that the demons are true force of Zamorak and that the warriors of Daemonheim should obey them. Nikkel along with the Wandering Ramokee also play a small role in the Civil War miniquest series. He can be found by the Deathmatch Entrance along with the Wandering Ramokee.

  • Civil War: Is part of the Zamorakian Civil War where he serves as mostly a recruiter for the faction lead by K'ril Tsutsaroth. Interestingly he does this nearby the Wandering Ramokee; who's recruiting for the Bilrach faction, surprisingly peacefully.
  • Minigame: Co-hosts one of the Distractions And Diversions, which are all a type of Minigame. In particular he co-hosts the Wilderness Flash Events game where the player assists one of the factions in the Zamorakian Civil War.

Fort Forinthry

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fort_forinthry.png
One of the many ways the fort can be built as.

A site of strategic importance to the Kingdom of Misthalin in protecting the land from both the denizens of the Wilderness and the forces of Zamorak. Several individuals have already been sent by King Roald to try to build and manage a fort in the "Grieving Vale", with no success. But, during the quest New Foundations the player themselves gets sent to try and builds Fort Forinthry, which is named after the Wilderness, which used to be named "Forinthry" before its destruction by Zamorak.

    In General
  • Geo Effects: Fort Forinthry's very nature as a fort implies that it grants this towards it's inhabitants, especially for those that can fight.
  • Mystery Fiction: The Murder On The Border quest is one and it naturally takes place at Fort Forinthry, with many of the character at the present.
  • Stand Your Ground: More or less the entire purpose of the fort. With Misthalin being vulnerable and unable to currently fight another war, the fort is the kingdom's only way to defend itself and well stand its ground.

    Aster Dunnet
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aster_4.png
Aster Dunnet, professional butler and mystery novel fan.

The player's butler and steward at Fort Forinthry. They were hired by the player during the quest New Foundations, do to a recommendation to the player by Bill. During the quest Murder On The Border they help their sister Bianca get the job of kitchen manager and assists the player in solving the murder of Duke Hoarse, and later Simon. Players who speak to Aster can have their royal title changednote  and/or spend their rested experience.

  • Ambiguous Gender: Aster's non-binary and as such their biological sex is left ambiguous.
  • But I Read a Book About It: Tries to use their knowledge from the mystery novels to use in the quest Murder On The Border.
  • The Butler Did It: Subverted, Aster is not the murderer in the quest Murder On The Border and in fact helps the player solve the mystery of who is. They did however unintentionally and unknowingly assist the murderer though.
  • Easy Exp: Players can spend their "Rested Experience" for bonus experience in the skill of their choice. "Rested Experience" is gained by simply being logged out of the game and having a Town Hall built in Fort Forinthry.
  • Punny Name: Their surname is a play on words for "done it", which is a reference to The Butler Did It cliche.

    Billnote
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bill_8.png
The former Lumber Yard owner turned 'Manager of Blueprint papers'.
As the sawmill operator.

Formerly the owner of the Lumber Yard before the Bank Of Varrock took it away from him, were it was eventually torn down for the construction of Fort Forinthry and to improve King's Road. After his loss of the Lumber Yard he was then hired twice as an architect to help build Fort Forinthry. The first time he was hired the group he was with failed to even setup the fort for unspecified reasons. The second time thought; after being saved by the player and convinced to help, was much more successful as seen in the Fort Forinthry Quest Series.

At Fort Forinthry he helps the player by providing guidance on the construction and upgrading of the buildings of the fort. He allows the player to make use of his sawmill and stonecutter for their construction supplies. He also appears in the Distractions and Diversions Court Case Sawmill Man V. The People; which takes place before Bill lost the Lumber Yard, where his old employee Will brought him to court.

  • Gadgeteer Genius: He may have invented the Supersteady Plankmaking machine, though his ex-employee Will claims to have done it as seen in the Distractions and Diversions Court Case Sawmill Man V. The People.
  • Spikes of Doom: He helps the player build these around Fort Forinthry's walls facing the Wilderness, with what's left over from his old sawmill.
  • True Craftsman: Has shades of this as the architect of Fort Forinthry and even back when he was simply known as the Sawmill Operator for the Lumber Yard.

    Princess
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princess_murder_on_the_border.png
The beloved pet of Fort Forinthry.

The beloved pet spaniel of Duke Hoarse. Duke Hoarse brought her with him to the banquet at Fort Forinthry during the quest Murder On The Border. During the quest Murder On The Border she helps the player solve the murder of Duke Hoarse once they make use of the Amulet Of Spanielspeak. At the end of the quest Murder On The Border she can be found with Rodney in the kitchen at Fort Forinthry.

"Scary lady gives good pets. Nice lady. No. Can't be her."
  • Signature Headgear: Aside from being the only spaniel in game note , you likely will notice her Cool Crown.
  • Team Pet: Becomes this for the residents at Fort Forinthry after the quest Murder On The Border.
  • Theme Naming: With her name, Signature Headgear and being the pet of a Duke, she seems to have a royalty theme.

    The Raptor
During the events of the quest Unwelcome Guests The Raptor becomes a permanent resident in Fort Forinthry; however, because he can be found in multiple other locations as well all information on him can be found here.

Tutorial Island

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tutorial_island.png
Sunken

The location of the original and current tutorial note  of RuneScape. As part of the game's lore "Tutorial Island" serves as a sort of school for would be adventurers. After the player completes the tutorial the Island is no longer accessible, possibly due to the dark wizard Hector Vivian.

Sometime after the player completes the tutorial "Tutorial Island" is sunk and the inhabitants are turned into hideous sea creatures by the dark wizard Hector Vivian with a curse. Thankfully though the inhabitants are saved by the player, Vannaka and Wizard Myrtle in the quest Beneath Cursed Tides. It's also sometimes mentioned in the port updates from the player's Player-Owned Ports.

Historically it was located just south of the "Wizards' Tower" before it's removal from the map and may still canonly be there with how Wizard Myrtle mentioning it being close to the tower.

    In General
  • Body Horror: The transformation of the tutors and other inhabitants is not pleasant to look at.
  • Cast Full of Crazy: During the Beneath Cursed Tides quest Vannaka notes that the curse Hector Vivian placed on the tutors appears to have affected their minds and indeed many of them while cursed are apparently incapable of seeing the player as anything but a new would be adventurer; despite their current experience, and insisting that their tasks are completed a certain way. That said there is some evidence that suggests that this isn't entirely because of the curse as shown in Hector Vivian's writings in the Message in a bottle, where at least some of the tutors note  try to force him through the tutorials despite the fact he doesn't belong there.
  • Forced Transformation: All of if not most of the inhabitants were forcibly turned into sea creatures by a curse from Hector Vivian.
  • Forced Tutorial: New players have to start off here and every character is apart of the tutorial.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: The human inhabitants cursed by Hector Vivian appear to have become half Crassian.
  • Nostalgia Level: The quest Beneath Cursed Tides bring you back to a now sunken "Tutorial Island" to save the people who were part of the Video Game Tutorial.
  • One-Time Dungeon:
  • Sea Monster: Arguably most of the inhabitants qualify as is after they were cursed by Hector Vivian.
  • Transformation Horror: See Body Horror above.

    Brother Brace's Friends
Three fish that Brother Brace befriended while cursed as seen in the Beneath Cursed Tides quest. Brother Brace requests that the player asks them if they've seen his missing prayer book. The names for the fish are random for each player note .

    Financial Advisor
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/financial_advisor.png
An official representative from the First National Bank of RuneScape.
During Beneath Cursed Tides.

A businessman that represents the First National Bank of RuneScape, that can naturally be found within "Tutorial Island's" bank. His job on "Tutorial Island" is teach new players on how to make and use the standard currency in "Gielinor". He also briefly teaches the player about the bank. During the quest Beneath Cursed Tides he helps the player break into the bank's vault, since that is currently the only for the player to make money and complete his task.

  • Cheap Gold Coins: Teaches the player about the game's standard currency, which is this.
  • Gotta Have It, Gonna Steal It: He more or less pushes this trope onto the player in the quest Beneath Cursed Tides and it's justified since the player needs to make money in order to break a curse, but breaking into his bank's vault is currently the only way to do that.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: When he acknowledges that the only viable way to make money in his tutorial during the quest Beneath Cursed Tides and breaking the curse is by robbing the bank he provides clues to help them. This might also suggest that he wasn't as affected by the mental aspect of the curse as some other tutors.

    Gerald
A prawn that Brynna the Survival Tutor befriended while cursed by Hector Vivian. He appears to have lived in a shell on Brynna's shoulder while she was cursed.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: Gerald shows alarm when Brynna tells the player to cook a shrimp, Brynna however defends herself with the fact that Gerald is a prawn not a shrimp.
"It's fine Gerald. You're a prawn not a shrimp, silly."
  • The Speechless: Does not speak at all and presumably can't, though why is a bit of a mystery since Brother Brace's friends; which are fish, and the Large Jellyfish can.

    Giant Sea Rats
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/giant_sea_rat.png
Overgrown vermin with gills.

Formally the Giant Rats from Vannaka's dungeon on "Tutorial Island", but as shown in the quest Beneath Cursed Tides they've too been cursed.

    Hector Vivian
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hector_vivian.png
The dark wizard that cursed the island.

A dark wizard and former hydromancer who accidentally sent himself to "Tutorial Island" while experimenting with portals. While on the Island he was unable to leave thanks to the Island's tutors believing his to be another would be adventure in need of training. He quickly grew frustrated finding the tasks given to him to be beneath him, so in revenge he sank the Island and cursed the inhabitants note . During the events of the Beneath Cursed Tides quest he tries to stop the player from breaking his curse and putting his curse on a captured Vannaka completing it. He was however stopped by the player and Wizard Myrtle. He then had his own curse placed on him by Wizard Terrova trapping him on the sunken Island.

"You'll be no match for my minions!"
  • Evil Sorcerer: He describes himself as a "Dark Wizard".
  • Evil Wears Black: Wears black robes.
  • Forced Transformation: Turns most of the people on "Tutorial Island" into Crassian hybrids.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: According to the Message in a bottle the tutors would not let him leave "Tutorial Island" until he completed their tasks, despite the fact he's not an adventurer and that his very presence on the Island is a mistake. The man has a right to be angry.
  • Making a Splash: He claims to have formally been a hydromancer, a type of magic based on the manipulation of water. That said it's unclean how he's no longer a hydromancer since he still appears to use water based magic and it's likely this type of magic played a role in sinking "Tutorial Island".
  • Motif: Appears to have a Crassian motif, having some as his minions and turning people into Crassian hybrids.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: This is his ultimate fate after Terrova both altered and moved one of Hector's own curses to him trapping him on "Tutorial Island".
  • Supernatural Sealing: Uses a curse to keep the inhabitants of "Tutorial Island" from leaving as he sinks it.
  • Villains Want Mercy: When he's defeated and has his own cursed moved to him by Terrova.
"No, please don't! No! Noooooo!"

    Jed
A banker who started working on "Tutorial Island" after the player left note . He was present when the dark wizard Hector Vivian came to the Island, but unfortunately did not survive the sinking of the Island for unknown reasons.

    Reginald
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/reginald_5.png
He can barely control the urge to welcome you.

The first character every player meets note . Reginald greets new players and teaches them how to get around the world and interact with various objects. He also used to by player to decide their avatar's appearance.

  • Color Motif: Wears a lot of red, likely to represent Reginald's and hopefully the player's feelings of excitement.
  • Nice Guy: His examine text says that he can barely control his urge to welcome the player.

    Wizard Terrova
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/terrova.png
A master of magic.
During Beneath Cursed Tides.

The magic instructor of "Tutorial Island" and the last tutor new players meet before completing the tutorial and leaving the Island. During the tutorial he teaches the new players about magic and how to use the magic and the lodestone network. During the quest Beneath Cursed Tides it's also revealed that he was a mentor of Wizard Myrtle. Towards the end of the quest he also assists the player and Myrtle in defeating Hector Vivian for good, by trapping him on the sunken Island with his own curse.

  • No Warping Zone: It's revealed at the end of the tutorial that he's in charge of protection spells around "Tutorial Island", which keep people from teleporting off of it.
  • Supernatural Sealing: Uses Hector Vivian's own curse to trap him on the now sunken "Tutorial Island".
  • Wizard Beard: He's got one.
  • Wizard Classic: Sets this as the standard for other wizards in RuneScape.

Wizards' Tower

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wizards_tower.png

A famous institute of magic and runecrafting, it's located just south of "Draynor Village" on a small Island. The institute was started sometime in the early years of the Fifth Age by four wizard orders note  to have a safe place to both research and discuss their findings in magic. Sometime in year 70 of the Fifth Age a ritual meant to enable teleportation magic by creating a connection between the plane of "Gielinor" and "The Abyss". Unfortunately despite the success of the ritual it was interrupted when the wizards of the Blue Order left due to the demonic influence in the ritual, which caused the destruction of the original tower and the death of the wizards still preforming the ritual. The Blue Order then blamed the Red Order due to the demon involved and banishing the Zamorakians from practicing magic or joining the institute note . Around the same time as the banishing took place the current tower was constructed.

At the top of the tower are portals to both the "Runecrafting Guild" and the "Runespan".

    In General
  • Color Motif: Most of the wizards at the tower can be seen wearing blue colored clothing. This is because sometime after the destruction of the first "Wizards' Tower" the institute was taken over by the Blue Order, a group of wizards that followed the god Saradomin who himself had a blue Color Motif.
    • Blue Is Calm: The Blue Order created most of the non-combat related spells in the standard spellbook and believed that magic should be used to help people suggesting a peaceful nature.
    • Blue Is Heroic: Like most other Saradominists they tend to see themselves as good if not outrightly heroic compared to other religious factions, though as many players can tell you the truth is far more complicated.
  • Wizard Beard: Most of the men have one.
  • Wizard Classic: The standard for wizards in RuneScape.

    Azacorax
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lesser_demon_wizards_tower.png
Lesser, but still pretty big.

The Lesser Demon trapped within the "Wizards' Tower" and watched over by Wizard Grayzag and later Wizard Taloram. He was summoned sometime in year 70 of the Fifth Age and played a important role in the creation of teleportation magic and incidentally the destruction of the first "Wizards' Tower" as revealed in the quest Rune Memories. He also plays a role in the quest Imp Catcher where it's revealed that he's the one that taught Wizard Grayzag how to summon imps and is in fact manipulating him for reasons unknown. After completing the quest Rune Memories and having level 50 Magic and Prayer the player can make a deal with him, with the player's choice granting them 10,000 experience in either the Magic or Prayer skill.

He's also been known by the names Lemmy and Timmy note .

  • Blood Magic: Implied or maybe Invoked, after completing the quest Rune Memories and having level 50 Magic and Prayer the player can make a deal with him, granting them 10,000 experience in the Magic skill, all the player has to do is give him a drop of their blood. Rejecting his offer will instead grant the player 10,000 experience in the Prayer skill.
  • Death Is Cheap: He has been destroyed numerous times by the wizards of "Wizards' Tower", but would respawn in the same spot overtime. In response to this the wizards created a barrier around the spot to keep him from escaping.
  • Eviler than Thou: According to the imps from the Imp Catcher quest he's far worse then themselves.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: As stated above, Death Is Cheap for Azacorax and killing him just causes him to respawn in the same location. When the wizards killing him realized this they created a barrier around the spot to keep him from escaping from the "Wizards' Tower" 2nd floor most eastern room.
    • Players are free to take advantage of this, since he can't defend himself.
  • Teleportation: As revealed in the quest Rune Memories, Azacorax played a very important role in the creation of teleportation magic.

    Professor Onglewip

A gnome mage on sabbatical.

A gnome mage sent by King Narnode Shareen to study human magic. Players sometimes need to visit him for Treasure Trails and the Gnome Restaurant minigame.

  • Arboreal Abode: Presumably lived in a tree like the other gnomes from the "Tree Gnome Stronghold" before coming to the "Wizards' Tower".
  • Magic Staff: Presumably his staff is magic.

    Rune Guardian (First Tower's Ruins)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rune_guardian_rune_mysteries.png
An ancient magical guardian.

The last of the rune guardians from the first "Wizards' Tower" and can be found in said tower's ruins. It appears in the quest Rune Mysteries were it stops the player and Ariane from passing further until they pass the entry test to discover which order of wizards note  they belong to. At the end of the Rune Mysteries quest players can go back to the Rune Guardian to receive a new title.

  • Glowing Eyes: What appear to be its eyes glow.
  • Last of His Kind: Though other rune guardians exist, this one is noted for being the last of the rune guardians from first "Wizards' Tower", with it being implied that all the rune guardians were recently made since they art of making them was only just rediscovered.
  • Meaningful Appearance: No other rune guardian resembles this one, likely to help show players that it is much older then the modern rune guardians and was likely made very differently.

    Thingummywut
One of the very creatures Wizard Traiborn is always talking about. This one shows up in the quest Love Story after Trailborn summons it to combat Dionysius and Zenevivia to keep them from robbing the "Wizards' Tower".
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Delivers one to Dionysius and Zenevivia when they try to rob the "Wizards' Tower" in the quest Love Story.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Appears to be capable of using the Earth Surge very rapidly.
  • The Ghost: Despite appearing in the quest Love Story the Thingummywut can not be seen, since once it appears the events taking place are seen through its eyes. In fact the only thing we know about it's appearance is that it's huge.
  • Walking Spoiler: The shear fact that it actually exists and not the ramblings of a mad wizard make it one.

    Wizard Ellaron
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wizard_ellaron.png
He has many names, most of which he invented for himself.

One of the senior wizards of the Wizards' Tower and Ariane's former mentor. It's known that even after Ariane was banished from the tower he remained as one of her supporters. This is because he's also secretly a member of the Sacred Tradition of the Staff of Fire; making him a red wizard, and was planning on turning his former student into a magical bomb to destroy the current Wizards' Tower to avenge the former red wizards who were banished after the destruction of the first tower. Thankfully though his plan was stopped by the player in the quest Rune Memories.

  • Cool Teacher: Implied to have more or less been this towards Ariane. Unfortunately he's later on revealed to be a Evil Teacher that's manipulating her into helping him try to destroy the Wizards' Tower.
  • Fictional Document: He's written a diary, which tells the player of his plot to destroy the Wizards' Tower. It can be found in the ruins of the first tower.
  • Irony: The soul fragments of wizards from the Red Order - including Kelavan the Red, the founder of Sacred Tradition of the Staff of Fire - want nothing to do with Ellaron's plans and assist the player in stopping him.
  • Master-Apprentice Chain: Was apparently part of one called the Sacred Tradition of the Staff of Fire.
  • Mentor Archetype: Was the mentor of Ariane and was according to Ariane he was a good one since she held him in high regard. It's also implied that even though he was revealed to have been a Evil Teacher who was ultimately trying to manipulate Ariane into helping him destroy the Wizards' Tower, many of his lessons and teachings still hold weight and have helped Ariane in becoming who she is today.
  • Walking Spoiler: Wizard Ellaron is actually the heir to the Sacred Tradition of the Staff of Fire, an order of Zamorakian red wizards founded by Kelavan the Red after his order was blamed for the destruction of the first tower. The entire purpose of him teaching Ariane is to turn her into a magical bomb by tricking her into delving into the ruins of the old tower, resulting in her being infused with the soul fragments of the wizards that were present in the destruction of the old tower that would render her unstable and lead to the destruction of the new tower as vengeance for the death of Zanmaron the Red and the subsequent prominence of the Blue Order.
  • Why Am I Ticking?: At the end of the quest Rune Memories his plan to turn his former student Ariane into a magical bomb by using the soul fragments of the wizards that were inside the old Wizards' Tower before it's destruction is turned against him, with himself becoming the bomb. Thankfully, before he could blow up the soul fragments teleport him to the Abyss, where he can safely detonate without harming anyone, foiling his plan.

    Wizard Myrtle
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wizard_myrtle.png
A skilled hydromancer, one of the few of her kind.

A former apprentice of Terrova, Myrtle is a rare type pf wizard called a hydromancer. She serves as the starting location for the quest Beneath Cursed Tides where she requests the aid of the player in finding out what happened to her old mentor Terrova and the rest of "Tutorial Island". She also plays a small role in the quest "Curse Of The Black Stone", where she helps the player create a potion for breathing underwater.

  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: She has a seashell on her wizard hat and a water rune by her belt, which is quite fitting for a hydromancer. She also wears blue, but that's kind of the standard for most good wizards, especially by the "Wizards' Tower".
  • Ironic Fear: She's scared of deep water. She gets over towards the end of the quest Beneath Cursed Tides so she can battle against Hector Vivian.
  • Making a Splash: Myrtle is a hydromancer, a type of magic based on the manipulation of water.
  • Quest Giver: Talking to her will have her request the player's aid which starts the quest Beneath Cursed Tides.

    Wizard Traiborn
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/traiborn.png
Wields incredible arcane power, if he could remember where he put it.

One of the senior wizards of the "Wizards' Tower", though he appears to be mad. He often calls people thingummywuts, which is a creature he's been looking for and discovers in the quest Love Story though he forgets about this event shortly after. Despite his mad ramblings he's actually a a powerful wizard.

"Don't be ridiculous. No-one has ever seen one. They're invisible, a myth, or a figment of my imagination. Can't remember which, right now."
  • Summon Bigger Fish: Towards the end of the quest Love Story he summons a Thingummywut which forces Dionysius and Zenevivia to flee. Though it's unclear if Traiborn deliberately did this to combat the two.
  • Summon Magic: Towards the end of the quest Love Story he summons a Thingummywut.
  • Talkative Loon: Often calls people thingummywuts and conversations at times suddenly change course.

    Zanmaron The Red
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zanmaron_the_red.png
Master of the Red Order.

A Master of the Red Order of wizards in the first "Wizards' Tower". He was killed sometime in year 70 of the Fifth Age when the ritual meant to enable teleportation magic got interrupted when the wizards of the Blue Order left due to the demonic influence in the ritual, which also destroyed the first "Wizards' Tower".

  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Though calling him a hero might be a bit of a stretch, his efforts to creating teleportation magic ultimately lead to the Red Order getting the sole blame for the destruction of the first "Wizards' Tower" and thus getting the Zamorakians banished from ever entering the "Wizards' Tower" Institute.
  • Posthumous Character: Long dead having died sometime in year 70 of the Fifth Age with the destruction of the first "Wizards' Tower", though his Soul Fragment does play a role and even has some dialogue in the quest Rune Memories.
  • Soul Fragment: Like many other wizards that were present during first "Wizards' Tower's'' destruction he ended up leaving one behind.
  • Teleportation: As revealed in the quest Rune Memories, Zanmaron played a very important role in the creation of teleportation magic.
