    Marvel Characters

Bone Claw Wolverine

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mvc2_wolverine_bone.jpg
Also known as Adamantium-less Wolverine, this is an alternate version of Wolverine without the Adamantium metal that was bonded to his skeleton. As a result of this he sports bone claws instead of his usual metallic ones. Gameplay-wise, this version reverts mostly back to Wolverine's gameplay from X-Men vs. Street Fighter.
  • Diving Kick: Bone Claws regains the diagonal version Dive Kick move first seen in Marvel Super Heroes instead of the straight descending kick he got since Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter.
  • Fragile Speedster: Compared to normal Wolvie, Bone Claw is stronger, faster and has more reach, but in exchange he takes more damage.
  • Moveset Clone: The two Wolverines have most of the same moves, but Bone Claw's moves and properties are based on his appearance back in X-Men vs. Street Fighter, so he has moves that behave different from those of his Adamantium version and lacks some of the moves he gained in later games, such as the Fatal Claw Hyper Combo.
  • Palette Swap: The only difference in the sprites of the two Wolverines is that Bone Claws has longer claws colored light brown/beige..
  • Wolverine Publicity: Taken even further than previous games, as he's now 2 separate playable characters instead of one! According to Word of God, this was caused by Marvel denying the staff's request to use Bone Claw as the only Wolverine in-game, since that was his current situation in the comics.

Cable

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mvc2_cable.jpg
Real name Nathan Summers, Cable is the gun-toting hard-ass future son of Cyclops and Jean Gray, usually time-traveling from an apocalyptic future to attempt to prevent it.
  • Ambidextrous Sprite: The position of Cable's metalic arm and shining eye switches depending on his pisition.
  • Artificial Limbs: His left arm is almost entirely metallic thanks to a techno-organic virus.
  • Badass Back: One of his intro animations has him turning his back to the opponent before assuming his idle stance. If left idle after doing his pistol normal, Cable strikes and maintains a pose where he is turning his back to the screen while looking over his shoulder.
  • Blue Is Heroic: His whole uniform is blue, and he's the delegated representative of the Marvel side being presented together with Ruby Heart.
  • BFG: His Viper Cannon, which allows him to create a parallel of his father's Hyper Optic Blast.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: Cable's Hyper Combo Time Flip has him create a double of himself via Time Travel. The double performs a set combo attack and Cable can jump in and attack at the same time.
  • Glowing Eyes: One of Cable's eyes is constantly shining in his idle stance.
  • Gun Twirling: Cable has one animation (used as his taunt, after being called for an assist, and in a victory pose) where he twirls his pistol on his right arm.
  • Javelin Thrower: His Psimitar move has Cable throw an electrified harpoon upwards as an effective Anti-Air.
  • The Leader: He's positioned in this way in official artwork and the select screen next to Ruby Heart, and stands with her in the ending, leaving the impression he's the chosen leader for the Marvel side.
  • More Dakka: It is Cable after all! His strong punch attack has him directly using a handgun to shoot his enemy, and the move can be button mashed for several extra shots.
  • Painful Transformation: In one of his win animations, his metallic arm suddenly grows out of control and turns into a large monstrous claw, with Cable struggling all the way through and ending exhausted and breathing heavily.
  • Shock and Awe: Most of Cable's special moves are electrified in some way or form, and some can even stun the opponent.
  • Trick Bomb: Cable's Electrap is an electric grenade he can throw to stun the opponent if they are caught in its radius.

Marrow

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mvc2_marrow.jpg
Real name Sarah Rushman, Marrow is a member of the hidden mutant society known as the Morlocks. Her mutant ability allows her to control the shape, form, strength and size of her bone structure, which she uses as a way to create effective weapons out of them.
  • Bad with the Bone: Marrow can make weapons out of her own skeleton and project them as projectiles, create large stingers out of her spine vertebrae or sharpen them to create a sword facsimile to slice at her opponent.
  • Ballistic Bone: Most if not all of her moves involve Marrow using her mutant power to grow her bone structure and turn them into weapon such as large spikes or projectiles.
  • Battle Boomerang: Her Bone-Rang special has her throw a bone-made boomerang.
  • Beware My Stinger Tail: While not a tail proper, her use of spine vertebrae to create large bone stingers out of her back to attack her opponent serves the same function.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: Marrow generates a large curved blade of bone from her elbow while performing the Ricochet Slash move.
  • Camera Abuse: Marrow has one win animation where she breaks the camer by throwing a bone-rang at it.
  • Devious Daggers: Marrow fights wielding a single knife-shaped bone in hand.
  • Spike Shooter: Her Bone Burst Hyper Combo has her shoot a large number of sharp bone spikes at the opponent.

    Capcom Characters

Hayato Kanzaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mvc2_hayato.jpg
The protagonist of the Star Gladiator series. An intergalactic bounty hunter infamous for his upstanding moral and penchant to go after criminals and other scum. He fights wielding a plasma sword.
  • Badass Biker: One of his intro animations has him enter the screen riding his Cool Bike.
  • Energy Weapon: What the plasma sword actually is: a blade of pure energy coming out of a sword grip.
  • Dynamic Entry: Hayato jumping off his moving bike and taking his fighting stance while activating his plasma sword.
  • Ground Wave: Hayato's Engetsu Hyper Combo releases a wave of energy forward.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Hayato's grab animation has him impale his plasma sword on his opponent, going fully through their torso.
  • Kiai: His intro animation involves one as he activates his plasma sword. He's also very much into shouting while doing most of his sword special moves.
  • Laser Blade: His main weapon is a plasma sword created from his inner psychic power. By all intends and purposes, it works exactly like a lightsaber, and even makes similar sounds.
  • Master Swordsman: Hayato is an expert with his plasma sword and can perform strikes, slashes, swipes and combo strings with ease. His mastery is best exemplified in his Plasma Combo special attacks, which are auto-combo techniques where Hayato strikes and downs the enemy using various sword strikes.
  • Retractable Weapon: As seen in one of his intro animations and some of his moves, Hayato's plasma sword is an energy blade coming out of a sword pommel.
  • Shock and Awe: Although not a prominent part of his moves, some attacks do leave an electrified effect on enemies.
  • Shoryuken: Hayato's Guren has him perform a rising spinning strike with his sword.
  • Super Mode: His Plasma Field Hyper Combo grants him unlimited Hyper Combos for a short time if it hits the enemy.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Successfully hitting with his Lv. 3 Hyper Combo "Ura Rasetsuzan" shows Hayato transform into Black Hayato (an evil alterego implanted into Hayato by his series' Big Bad) to perform a devastating combo attack behind a black screen.
  • Sword Beam: His Engetsu Hyper Combo has him extend his plasma sword and releases a wave of energy at the opponent.
  • Sword Lines: His plasma sword leaves trails of energy as he swings it.

Jill Valentine

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mvc2_jill.jpg
One of the main characters in the Resident Evil franchise. A veteran and hard-trained member of the special operations group S.T.A.R.S., and one of the few who survived the horrors inside the Spencer Mansion.
  • Action Girl: Was already one in her home series, but here she proves she can also defend herself without the need of guns (for the most part).
  • Affectionate Parody: Her move Charging S.T.A.R.S. is pretty clearly parodying Captain America's Charging Star, not only in name but in the way it works as a dashing strike. And she even has an Hyper Combo variant like the Cap.
  • Arbitrary Gun Power: Her weapon-based normal moves aren't very impressive and she can rack up a lot more damage by chaining punches and kicks or tackle enemies with a shoulder strike.
  • Assist Character: In a rather unique manner, Jill can call forth zombies, zombie dogs and crows to attack her opponent. The interesting part is that they aren't helping her, she needs to move out of their way so they get her opponent instead.
  • Badass Normal: Jill has no extraordinary powers or technology to assist her in battle. She gets by with a movelist of punches, kicks, a few weapons and the unwilling assistance of zombified monstrosities.
  • BFG: Jill pulls out a big rocket launcher for one of her Hyper Combos, in a big nod to the end boss of Resident Evil.
  • Blind Shoulder Toss: One of Jill's intro animation has she standing upright facing her opponent while holding a small item, then tossing said item behind her. The item she throws is a random minor item from the first Resident Evil game, either a Small Key or an Ink Ribbon.
  • Counter-Attack: She has one such move, and if activated the opponent gets to eat lead as she unloads a full clip of her handgun on them.
  • Dash Attack: Her Charging S.T.A.R.S. move has her tackle forward shoulder-first while engulfed in fire.
  • Enemy Summoner: Jill can summon zombies, Cerberus dogs, crows and even the Tyrant to "help" her, although as explained before Jill is more like moving out of their way so they attack her opponent.
  • Expressive Health Bar: When the player gets healed by Jill's Assist Type the classic cardiogram screen from Resident Evil appears, and in classic fashion it goes from the red "Danger" status to the green "Good" one.
  • Genki Girl: While normally her lines are terse and serious, one of her win animation has Jill shoot out a flare and start jumping excitedly while shouting "Come on!".
  • Grenade Launcher: One of her normal moves has her whip out a grenade launcher and shoot a grenade at an overhead arc as a decent Anti-Air.
  • Healing Herb: One of Jill's unique Assist Types has her hand over a Green Herb to restore a small bit of life.
  • Incendiary Exponent: Jill can summon a zombie on fire to send at her opponent. Unlike the normal zombie, this one doesn't grab the opponent but explodes on contact with them.
  • The Paralyzer: The effect if a zombie reaches the opponent: they grab them and munch on them for a while, leaving them helpless for Jill to capitalize.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: Her Code: T-02 Hyper Combo involves the Tyrant monster coming out of the ground and striking wildly around it, all in reference to the final boss battle of the original Resident Evil where it burst through the mansion's rooftop. The player can complete the reference by doing an extra motion near the end of the attack to make Jill produce the rocket launcher and blow the Tyrant into smithereens, just like in the original game.

Tron Bonne & Servbot

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mvc2_tron_bonne.jpg
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mvc2_servbot_3.jpg
From the Mega Man Legends series. Tron Bonne is a Pirate Girl and leader of the Bonne Family, and a recurring (if largely ineffective) antagonist to Mega Man Volnutt. The Servbots are robot minions of her making, that loyally follow and assist her in any scheme or plot she's planning on doing, often with varying degrees of success. Servbot appears both assisting Tron in her moves, and as a separate playable character.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Both characters have access to the King Servbot Hyper Combo, where Servbot grows in size and starts smashing the opponent with a giant mallet.
  • Defeat Equals Explosion:
    • Tron's Gustaff explodes as part of her Time Out defeat animation, leaving a crying Tron on the floor surrounded by its parts.
    • Servbot explodes when defeated in battle. As a bonus extra, his explosion leaves behind Refractor Shards that, when picked up, restore a bit of life.
  • Dub Name Change: Servbot is known as Kobun in Japanese.
  • Fictional Currency: Refractor Shards, used as currency in Mega Man Legends, can be stolen from the enemy by Servbots grabbing them from Tron's Beacon Bomb and Servbot's Supporting Attack special moves. If the opponent is not attacked until they stop holding him, the Servbots will run away while holding shards, and if Tron/Servbot touches them they restore some lost life. When the Servbot character is defeated, he explodes and leaves behind several shards as well.
  • Fire-Breathing Diner: Servbot's move Servbot Fire has the little fella eat some spicy curry and then release a flame from his mouth.
  • Hat of Flight: Servbot has some moves where he summons other Servbots wearing little helicopter blades on their heads that allows them to fly. Tron's move Servbot Launcher shoots these kind of Servbots as well, which makes them slowly fall back into the ground.
  • Joke Character: Servbot is incredibly weak, has zero range with his little limbs and goes down very fast in lieu of his diminutive size and defense. He does still have some limited uses, for example being able to avoid most Hyper Combos by standing still thanks to his size.
  • Killer Yoyo: One of Tron's normals has her spring two sharp-edged yo-yos from the limbs of the Gustaff to attack.
  • Little Miss Badass: One of the youngest members of the cast at 14 years old.
  • Mecha-Mooks: The Servbots are small robotic minions that serve Tron in many of her attacks.
  • Mini-Mecha: Tron fights by piloting a small humanoid robot called Gustaff.
  • Moveset Clone: Servbot has mostly the same moves Tron has, including those using other Servbots to attack, but he also has some unique moves that are only similar, such as his Servbot Fire (in place of the Gustaff Fire), or his Summoning Attack (who works like a mix of Tron's Beacon Bomb and Servbot Launcher).
  • Personal Space Invader: Tron's Beacon Bomb move sends Servbots to glomp the opponent, keeping it trapped in place. Servbot has a similar move where he launches another Servbot for the same effect.
  • Noblewoman's Laugh: Tron cracks out a pretty good laugh as part of her intro animations and after performing Assist Attacks.
  • Robot Buddy: Servbots are at Tron's service at all times and provide her support in a large variety of ways, from engineering and maintaining machines to assisting in her crime heist, usually with varying degrees of effectivity. In-game they assist her in several of her moves, either trapping the opponent in place or launching themselves as projectiles to hit 'em. Servbot is also supported in the same way by the other Servbots.
  • Sweat Drop: If Tron misses a grab move, she stays in place with a disappointed face while a thought bubble displays the sweat drop.
  • Transforming Mecha: Tron's Gustaff can transform its limbs into an assortment of weapons, including metal pikes, cannons, drills, tank threads, an excavator shovel and large spikes.
  • This Is a Drill: The Bonne Strike move has Tron's Gustaff turn one of its limbs into a drill to attack.
  • Zerg Rush: The Lunch Rush Hyper Combo, where a large line of Servbots trample the opponent. The Servbot's version of this attack is unique in that it changes the way it works depending on the Assist Type selected.

    Original Generation
Three original characters that debuted in this game. They all count as Capcom characters.

Ruby Heart

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mvc2_ruby_heart_4.jpg
An infamous pirate captain that sails the seven seas in search of magical objects to add to her collection. Wanting to include the legendary Armor of Erosion, she assisted a pirate group in ransacking its temple but instead they awakened the beast and got the entire world in danger of being destroyed. She decides to gather heroes from both universes in an attempt to stop Abyss before all life on Earth is gone.
  • Action Girl: Ruby is one of two female original characters who can pack a punch. Besides that, she's a hard-boiled pirate captain that's built a worldwide reputation as a sea-faring adventurer.
  • Anchors Away: Ruby Heart can use a small anchor to either capture her opponent or reel them in and blast them with a cannon from point-blank range.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: She leads a band of pirates and fights with them.
  • Bedsheet Ghost: A sinister version of these kind of ghosts come out of a haunted treasure chest as part of a special move and Hyper Combo.
  • Blind Shoulder Toss: Ruby Heart does exactly this in the ending: pondering over Abyss' broken core and whether she should keep it for her collection, then realizing the orb is either completely useless now or that it'd be dangerous to keep it and tossing it over her shoulder and into the ocean waters below.
  • Canon Immigrant: A character simply called 'Ruby' was included in the Shadaloo Combat Research Database website, an official In-Universe wiki chronicling every single character, canonical or no, associated with Street Fighter. While that Ruby has a completely different backstory, she is clearly modelled on Ruby Heart.
    • Narrowly Averted in another sense, as Ruby Heart was originally conceived as a Darkstalkers character, but her pirate motif was deemed ill-fitting for the horror-themed fighting game series.
  • Collector of the Strange: Ruby Heart likes to keep a collection of ancient magical objects, and the whole plot is kickstarted by her desire to add Abyss to it. In the game's ending, Ruby Heart ponders over keeping Abyss' broken core, but finally relents and drops it in the waters below.
  • Cool Airship: The Partenaire, a flying, dimension-crossing pirate ship. It also serves as a stage, with the normal version set on the air as she is flying, and the alternate version set while on the sea.
  • Experienced Protagonist: She's a swashbuckler who has been fighting bad guys for a while. She even has her own little supporting cast in her motley pirate crew.
  • Eyepatch of Power: She has a futuristic-looking eyepatch that covers her right eye.
  • Friendly Pirate: According to the game's lore, Heart decided to bring the heroes and villains from both companies to stop Abyss. Unusual for pirates as they're often antagonists, but justified as she is partly responsible for awakening Abyss and feels the need to correct her mistake.
  • Generation Xerox: Ruby became a pirate following in the footsteps of her father.
  • Gratuitous French: She might be speaking like this, although it's hard to tell. A lot of her moves are named in French, however.
  • The Hero: Although Marvel vs. Capcom 2 doesn't have much going on in terms of story (even by the series' usual standards), Ruby is seemingly meant to be the closest thing to a company-neutral main protagonist for the game. The roster select screen has the player 1 cursor always start on Ruby. Game material also indicates that Ruby Heart was the one who recruited the good/bad guys from the Capcom and Marvel universes to help fight Abyss.
  • Home Stage: The Ship stage, which is set on board her Cool Airship Partenaire.
  • Hyperspace Arsenal: On top of being able to summon huge anchors and treasure chests to attack her opponents, she can summon her ship Partenaire as a super move... even when she's on the ''Partenaire'' stage.
  • It's Personal: After Ruby Heart makes the mistake of helping some pirates release Abyss from its slumber, she personally sees to it that she and the recruited heroes fight it and destroy it.
  • The Leader: She's the captain of a crew of rowdy pirates, who assist her in one Hyper Combo and pose alongside her for a win animation. She also serves as the de-facto leader of the Capcom side in their quest to stop Abyss.
  • Making a Splash: Ruby Heart can create pillars of water for a ranged attack.
  • Mana Drain: The ghosts released from a haunted chest used in one of her special moves (and its Hyper Combo variant) drain the opponents' Hyper Combo Gauge once they strike and cling to them.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Monthly Arcadia info from the March 30, 2000 issue suggests that Ruby summoned the Capcom and Marvel characters because she helped an unnamed pirate crew trying to take Abyss while in its Armor of Erosion Form, which awakened and made it cause havoc.
  • Not Quite Flight: Her Schwarzaile special move allows her to move in the air as a ball of pure energy. Her Hyper Combo Flammeile is an upgraded form that allows her to move all over the sky as it can be done several times on quick succession at different angles.
  • Pirate Girl: Who she is in the first place. According to interviews by Yoshinori Ono and Seth Killian, Ruby was meant to represent the Darkstalkers series before decisions forced the production team to abort it.
  • Sky Pirate: The Airship stage is actually her ship, and it's used in the credits after arcade mode to carry the victors out of the battleground.
  • The Atoner: Ruby sees to it that Abyss is taken down because she didn’t realize that the Armor of Erosion was that bad after she helped the pirate crew in the heist and realized that the item was something that was better left alone.
  • The Rival: The game presents Cable as her equal on the Marvel side, since he is another tough-as-nails leader figure. By the end of the game, they seem to become quite close. We see Ruby confide in Nathan after she decides to throw Abyss's dead core into the ocean.
  • Talk to the Fist: Her basic grab animation has her simply punch the opponent in the face, sending them flying.

SonSon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sonson_big_mvc2.jpg
The granddaughter of SonSon (the protagonist of a 1984 Arcade game of the same name), she is an energetic and mischievous monkey girl in training. After her village was struck by a strange disease, she takes up her grandfather's staff and leaves on a mission to find a cure.

  • Action Girl: An Action Girl monkey to be precise.
  • Affirmative-Action Legacy: Shares her name and heroic legacy with her grandfather.
  • Ancestral Name: SonSon is named after her grandfather, which is akin to an alternate take on Sun Wukong. UDON gave her full name as SonSon III in the Marvel vs. Capcom Official Complete Works artbook, therefore implying one of her parents shares her name as well.
  • Badass Adorable: A cute, energetic monkey girl who uses her magical staff to bring the pain.
  • Big Eater: SonSon has atleast two different moves where she tries to cook and/or eat their opponents, plus one of her Assist has her share a health-recovering peach to her partner.
  • Breath Weapon: When in her Monkey King form, SonSon can perform two actions: either a Megaton Punch or a laser breath attack.
  • Death from Above: Her Tenchi Tsuukan Hyper Combo has her throw her staff upward, which then drops down on the opponent as a massively larger staff.
  • Doomed Hometown: Her village being struck by a strange disease is what pushes her into action. If the Swamp stage is indeed representing her village, then it's rapidly becoming a proper Ghost Town.
  • Eaten Alive: The fate of whoever gets hit by SonSon's POW Hyper Combo: turned into a random fruit and eaten. Fortunately for them, she then spits a seed that turns back into them.
  • Enemy Summoner: SonSon has a special move where she creates little monkeys out of hair strands, then sends them forward. This move is referencing one of Sun Wukong's abilities in Journey to the West.
  • Fighting Clown: While less obviously so than Amingo, SonSon has a very whimsical fighting style. At least, until she transforms into a humongous were-monkey and torches you with beams of flaming breath.
  • Forced Transformation: The fate of whoever gets hit by SonSon's POW Hyper, turned into a giant fruit and then devoured by her.
  • Genki Girl: She's very excitable and constantly smiling, and most of her animations has her doing silly poses or otherwise gushing energetically.
  • Home Stage: The alternative unlockable version of the Swamp stage features strong Chinese vibes and includes a tree growing peaches, making it pretty likely her home stage. It is often believed it represents her village, with the standard derelict version being its current state under a pandemic, but this hasn't been officially confirmed.
  • Hulking Out: SonSon's Hyper Combo En'Ou transforms her into a large and muscular were-monkey for a short time. Rather than rage, however, it is stated in her bio that the transformation is triggered by how excited she gets in battle.
  • It's Personal: SonSon went for Abyss after her village was struck by an epidemic caused by Abyss' awakening.
  • Killer Gorilla: What the Monkey King Hyper Combo turns SonSon into: a large and angry-looking were-monkey twice her size, that can pummel her opponents or blast them with Breath Weapon.
  • Legacy Character: SonSon is the granddaughter of SonSon, the eponymous protagonist of an early Capcom game of the same name, which was based off the Journey to the West story.
  • Mischief-Making Monkey: SonSon's mischievousness comes through in some animations where she mocks or taunts the opponent, and some of her special moves where she plays around, prances on the screen or tries to eat/cook her opponent.
  • Monkey King Lite: Like her grandfather from the original SonSon game, she's a complete pastiche of Sun Wukong with her entire moveset bursting with references to Journey to the West.
  • Mooning: SonSon's taunt animation is this, where she turns around, bends down and shows her rear while slapping it. While she doesn't drop her pants for this, since her pants are colored the same color as her fur, the effect at a glance is the same.
  • Painting the Medium: One of her gravity-defying special moves has her run along all four sides of the screen to get to the other side of the stage.
  • Rule of Funny: Her fighting style in general. Her level 3 super move has her transform her opponent into a giant watermelon which she then devours in three bites and spits the seeds out of.
  • Shout-Out: Several to the original SonSon Arcade game:
    • One of SonSon's colors is an all-blue palette, a reference to the Mirror Boss character from SonSon II.
    • Her POW Hyper Combo references the item from the game and its effect, as it turns all enemies into fruit when picked up.
  • Spectacular Spinning: SonSon has some normal moves where she spins her staff around to attack, as well as a special move where she rises up while spinning it. Her blocking animation also involves her staff spinning in front of her.
  • Telescoping Staff: As any good Sun Wukong Expy should, she wields a size-changing red staff that's much more flexible than it looks. One of her super moves has her grow it to gigantic proportions and rain it down on the opponent. As stated in her bio, the staff is actually the Ruyi Jingu Bang she inherited from her grandfather.

Amingo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mvc2_amingo_2.jpg
A member of a race of sentient plant life known as the "Man-Plants", Amingo is a cheerful and gentle big cactus man. Following Abyss' awakening, cursed winds started sweeping the lands and killing all of its plant life, so Amingo leaves on a quest to find and stop the source of this happening.
  • Cactus Person: He's a giant sapient cactus man and a walking National Stereotype of Mexico.
  • Dynamic Akimbo: This is Amingo's blocking animation. That is, he does the pose and blocks attacks with it. He also assumes an increased musculature and his chest sprouts spikes. The thing is pretty much played for Rule of Funny.
  • Fighting Clown: Hardly seems like much of a fighter considering his silly design and animations, but he can still throw down with the Marvel heroes and villains.
  • Flunky Boss: He can summon little cactus friends who die in one hit to attack or distract opponents.
  • Gratuitous Mariachi Band: Amingo is basically a walking National Stereotype of Mexico, so of course he whips out a guitarron and starts jamming in his win pose.
  • Gentle Giant: Amingo is an easy-going and cheery rather large/rotund cactus man.
  • Home Stage: The desert stage is considered his home stage, as it has a sombrero, sash and poncho hanged on the background.
  • Nature Hero: He joins the heroes because he wants to protect the plant life that Abyss has been destroying.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: While the Capcom side of the roster has its share of more cutesy, cartoony characters from other series, Amingo takes it to the next level by being a rubbery, rotund cactus-man in a cast mostly composed of humanoid characters. Only Shuma-Gorath, a cephalopoid Eldritch Abomination from the Marvel multiverse, can match him in peculiarity.
  • Pokémon Speak: Amingo's lines are mostly made-up of grunts, growls and his own name.
  • Shapeshifter Weapon: Like your average Darkstalkers character, he can morph his arms (and his entire body) into all sorts of different forms (in his case a number of different plant types) which he uses to attack.
  • Spike Balls of Doom: Some of Amingo's attacks sees him turning into a ball with spikes surrounding his waistline or surface.

    Boss

Abyss

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/abyss.gif
A legendary creature created in ancient times, in an age where magic prospered, Abyss is a forbidden weapon that was so dangerous it was sealed off inside a temple within a volcano. A pirate group assisted by Ruby Heart broke into its resting place planning to steal it, but they only managed to awake it from its slumber. Abyss' final goal is to destroy all life and bring it back to primordial times, with its mere presence being enough to generate hideous waves of corruption that kill all life on both sea and land.
  • Animated Armor: Abyss's first form, which towers over (most of) the games' cast.
  • Annoying Laugh: Abyss' beam-spamming second form. "HAHAHAHA! HAHAHAHA!"
  • Attack Its Weak Point: The black sphere that serves as Abyss' core. It can only be attacked in the third form, though.
  • Beam Spam: Abyss's second form uses beams as one of two basic attacks he spams on the fight. Players need to time their blocks in order to minimize the damage.
  • Big Bad: For Marvel vs. Capcom 2, being responsible for killing almost all life on Earth.
  • Blob Monster: Abyss' true self is the large black orb that becomes visible on its third form, but it can control a slimy green (and later red) substance that's all over its sealed temple. Abyss uses this liquid to form the bodies of its 2nd and 3rd form, control the Armor of Erosion from within by filling it with the liquid, and separate parts of it to mold them into various different attacks.
  • Body Horror: It might be kind of hard to spot, but in its third form, Abyss' face will occasionally melt and be replaced by another identical face from within its body. He also springs out three demonic heads in one of his win poses.
  • Bubble Gun: Abyss' second form has an Hyper Combo where it releases several bubbles into the field, capturing the player and leaving them open for attacks unless they mash up in order to break free in time.
  • Death from Above: Abyss's first form has a shower of energy spears as a Hyper Combo.
  • Defeat Equals Explosion: After you beat its third form, its core explodes.
  • "Get Back Here!" Boss: The third phase of the fight becomes this, as Abyss moves all around while attacking (even from offscreen!), and the player has to keep track and attack the black orb making up its core.
  • Harmless Liquefaction: One of the most annoying abilities of Abyss in its Guardian and final forms is the capacity to liquify itself and disappear into the ground, allowing it both to avoid attacks and teleport around the arena, reforming its body somewhere else (often behind the player character) to perform an attack.
  • Horns of Barbarism: The Armor of Erosion sports two large green horns (made out of the slime Abyss controls) jutting out of its helmet, and they are a pretty decent cue to know just how much violent and unstoppable this monster is.
  • Identical Stranger: Most likely a coincidence, but its third and final form bears a slight resemblance to Venom, who also happens to be on the roster, except gigantic and red-skinned (making him ironically similar to another famous symbiote villain, Carnage). Abyss even has some special moves resembling Venom's Venom Rush and Venom Fang.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: In one of its win animations in its 3rd form, Abyss strikes the downed opponent to send it flying and then leaps and devours them. Its stated final goal is to do this to all the life on Earth as a way of returning them to the Sea of Genesis.
  • Implacable Man: The Armor of Erosion is a giant suit of black armor with inmense power, that's slowly walking up to the player to utterly crush them...and the strongest attack possible can at most delay it slightly before it strikes. Not for nothing jumping all over is a viable (and recommended) strategy.
  • Lean and Mean: The Guardian form takes the appearance of a skinny green man with a powerful Arm Cannon and no legs (they are liquid and merge into the ground, which is covered in the same liquid). Coupled with its Evil Laugh and trollish gameplay, and you get one evil (and seriously annoying) bastard.
  • Lost Technology: Abyss was created by an ancient civilization to be the ultimate weapon many years ago. Its existence became the stuff of legend in Ruby Heart's universe.
  • Multiple Head Case: Abyss's third form occasionally sprouts three heads, mainly as a taunt.
  • Mighty Glacier: Abyss' first/Armor form, possessing great strength, large screen-covering moves and being completely inmune to stunning while attacking...but obviously, the Armor is slow as molasses and its attacks come out really slow and with plenty of telegraphing.
  • My Rules Are Not Your Rules: Abyss' third form can move offscreen and even perform moves and attack from outside the player's view, something no playable character can do.
  • No-Sell: Abyss (in all three forms) is completely inmune to flinching and can't be hit out of any of its animations.
  • Original Generation: Abyss is the first and only boss in the series so far to be a 100% original character, all previous bosses were either already-existing characters from either company, or an hybrid character made up of a character/concept from each company.
  • Phlegmings: Abyss' third form dosplays a copious amount of green slime drooling out of its massive and sharp-toothed jaw.
  • Playing with Fire: Final Form Abyss can attack by using large pillars of fire it releases from the ground or straight ahead from its back. It also has a large flame attack similar to Dhalsim's Yoga Blast.
  • Power Limiter: The Armor of Erosion was created in order to help Abyss control its powers when in combat.
    • Evolution Powerup: After the armour is destroyed, Abyss changes into a slender green humanoid form. This form is known as the Guardian, which is meant to help Abyss build up power.
    • Super Mode: Abyss' red form is its final form after Guardian is defeated.
  • Red Is Violent: For its third and final form, the green liquid Abyss manipulates to create its bodies (and which also permeates the entire stage), as well as the entire sky, turn blood red. Then there's Abyss final form created with said liquid: compared to the first (who is violent but subdued due to its slow pace) and the second (who is annoying and trollish), final Abyss form is large demonic creature that, among other attacks, can violently slam the ground with its limbs, jump at the player with a giant toothy mouth or create outbursts of fire either as pillars or prjectiles.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Abyss was sealed up within a temple located inside an active volcano in the middle of a vast body of water. The actions of a pirate group (assisted by Ruby Heart) broke the seal and awakened the monster within.
  • Sequential Boss: As the natural result of being the Final Boss in a 3-on-3 tag team fighting game, Abyss has no team but 3 separate forms it takes to face the player's team in battle, with each forms representing Abyss slowly regaining its true power.
  • Spam Attack: Abyss' second/Guardian form has this as its almost exclusive strategy: it has only two normal moves: a laser beam or a flame strike, both coming out of its Arm Cannon. So the whole battle boils down to having to dodge/block and quickly approach Abyss while it spams both attacks constantly while laughing, only breaking this pattern to throw in one of its two Hyper Combos (one of which captures you, leaving you open for more spam).
  • Throne Room Throwdown: The first battle against Abyss is set in front of an ivory throne in the center of his temple.
  • Use Your Head: Armor of Erosion Abyss has a dashing headbutt Hyper Combo similar to Juggernaut's Headcrush.
  • The End of the World as We Know It: Abyss' final goal is to devour all life on Earth to return it to primordial times.
  • Walking Wasteland: Abyss is an embodiment of entropy, spreading death and pestilence wherever it treads. The unnamed pirates that awakened it unwittingly activated its main objective: To return everything to the Sea of Genesis.
