The Gokaigers

    General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/88ef18f39bedf6f4a2d43af689d3c864.jpg
Left to right: Luka Millfy, Ahim de Famille, Gai Ikari, Captain Marvelous, Joe Gibken, and Don Dogoier.
A band of Space Pirates who arrive on Earth to search for the Greatest Treasure in the Universe. To get it, however, they need to gather the Greater Powers of the 34 Sentai teams before them, which all come in the form of Ranger Keys. Also, the Zangyack Empire seems to have some beef with them, forcing this lot of swashbucklers to protect Earth from their newest invasion fleet along with a few other enemies to get what they want and emerge in one piece.
  • Anti-Hero Team: Hoo boy, they are not a heroic team by any stretch of the imagination. Marvelous is a badass Jerk with a Heart of Gold (emphasis on the "jerk" for most of the series), Joe is a stoic swordsman who's a former Zangyack officer, Luka is money-obsessed to the extreme and can be more of a jerk than Marvelous, and Don is a klutzy coward (though it makes him more ineffectual than anti-heroic really). Ahim is the Token Good Teammate due to her innate kindness and lack of malice for a while until Gai shows up. They do eventually take a level in kindness by the end of the series, but it's a ways away before the team actually gets there.
    • Even after the end of the show it's telling in that most of the return appearances involve them coming to blows with another team and they're typically the aggressors.
  • Badass Crew: They're a team of space pirates who know a thing or two about being flashy — of course they qualify as this.
  • Breakout Character: The Gokaiger's are probably the most popular team of the 2010s and potentially of the franchise in general. They've returned several times since, and have probably made the most appearances as an entire team. They're notably thus far the only team to have the entire team make a guest appearance during another show with their return in Zyuohger. Marvelous himself has made several appearances either by himself or only with one or two other members and is the Red Warrior and male Sentai character with the most appearances (He's beaten out by HurricaneBlue and Deka Yellow).
  • Brought Down to Badass: At the conclusion of their show, they return the Ranger Keys to their original holders losing the ability to transform into other Rangers and going from potentially the most powerful team in existence (given they could use every Sentai power) to only about as strong as any other Sentai team.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: Unlike the Goseigers who were a group of angelic beings and a Gosei Headder from the Gosei World, the Gokaigers are a group of Space Pirates consists of humanoid aliens and a human earthling.
  • Human Aliens: Despite being from outer space, the main Gokaigers all appear and act perfectly human and are referred to as such. Averted with Gai, who's from Tokyo, Earth.
  • Pirate: Space pirates in fact!
  • The Team: The Gokaigers consists of five various personalities from across the universe, coming together to find the "Greatest Treasure in the Universe" to fulfill their goals. Marvelous is the leader of his crew, being of the Headstrong and Charismatic types. Joe directly contrasts Marvelous with his stoic personality and disciplined swordplay. Luka is the most offensive member of the team, dealing out the most damage against the Zangyack. The Smart Guy: Don is the engineer of the GokaiGalleon and often comes up with creative situations to beat the Zangyack. The Heart: Ahim mediates the team's arguments and is even outright called the emotional center of the team. Sixth Ranger: Gai makes his first appearance in the 17th episode of the series, quickly joining the crew right after.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: It's a slow road, but they do eventually come to care about Earth and its inhabitants, even giving up the friggin' "Greatest Treasure in the Universe" to preserve the Super Sentai teams before them. Even after the main series ended, they still frequently visit Earth to protect it from evil and are more or less adored by the public and given respect to by their predecessors.

    Captain Marvelous

Captain Marvelous/Gokai Red | Actor: Ryota Ozawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marvelous_9651.jpg

The leader of the Gokaigers, after the Red Pirate Crew disbanded earlier back. A headstrong young man with the skills to prove it, his strong personality has drawn many people to his crusade to find the "Greatest Treasure in the Universe" — as well as pushed them away.

  • Back-to-Back Badasses: With Joe in #12 during a flashback against the Zangyack when Marvelous was trying to get Joe out of their forces.
  • Badass Arm-Fold: His usual pose.
  • Badass Longcoat: His default attire includes a long red captain's coat.
  • Battle Cry: "Let's make this showy!"note , which gets adopted and adapted by the others over the course of the show. Dr. Don eventually uses "Let's blow them up!"note
    • When it's time to wrap it up, he usually goes "Let's pull out the stops!"note
    • Hiromu even borrowed it during their team-up
  • Berserk Button: Whatever you do, do not bother Marvelous while he's eating. Or steal his food. Also, don't mess with his crew.
  • Big Eater: Has quite the appetite — one he doesn't tolerate getting ruined.
  • Catchphrase: "Well, ain't that interestin'?"note
  • Combination Attack: Gavan Marvelous Dynamic, with Space Sheriff Gavan.
  • Crucified Hero Shot: In #43, as the Zangyack prepare to execute him in front of a large audience. Luckily Don manages to save him just in time.
  • Determinator: Just as big as Takeru or Alata. Prime example include managing to shoot Warz Gill and Barizorg despite being heavily wounded in the back and fighting against three of Basco's extra heroes key in human form after being de-transformed.
  • Eyepatch After Time Skip: In the reunion movie Ten Gokaiger, Marvelous was shown wearing an eyepatch ten years after the series ended due to having an eye infection.
  • Fake Defector: While he and Tsukasa Kadoya appeared to have turned evil in Super Hero Taisen, they really just did it to learn Dai-Shocker and Dai-Zangyack's true plans to destroy both the Kamen Riders and Super Sentai.
  • Going Down with the Ship: As the team in GoZyu GokaiOh are getting handed their asses on a platter by Warz Gill's robot, he forces the team out as the Gokai Galleon disassembles and crashes somewhere.
  • The Good Captain: Of the Gokaigers and the Gokai Galleon.
  • Hot-Blooded: Oh yes! This man is very temperamental and quick to rush into danger without a second thought. Even his Catchphrase reflects this aspect of his personality and character.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Hoo, boy. Take a look at episode 35.
  • It Was a Gift: Aka Red gave him the Ranger Keys and Navi.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Marvelous has quite a dickish attitude sometimes, but he deeply cares about his mates and for others.
  • Last of His Kind: Subverted. Marvelous is stated in episode 8 to be the last surviving member of the Red Pirates, which according to Insarn is the greatest rebel force to face the Zangyack, but it's later revealed that There Is Another — Basco ta Jolokia, a rival of Marvelous.
    • Technically speaking, it's actually played straight. Marvelous was still part of the Red Pirates when the gang was finished but Basco however betrayed the gang so in a way, he's not a surviving Red Pirate, so that leaves Marvelous as the last surviving Red Pirate.
  • Law of Chromatic Superiority: Unless the team does an all-color Gokai Change (such as the All-Silver team in #18), he only ever uses Red Rangers. This even extends to Sixth Rangers and Extra Heroes; the only ones he ever uses are Time Fire and Wolzard Fire. Heck, even with the OOO Combo Forms he gets the Blazing TaJaDor form!
    • Even when the team goes All Silver in 18, he manages to cling to a little red! He goes with Bouken Silver, whose suit has some notable red accents. Marv just likes red!
  • The Leader: The Captain of the Gokaigers and the one who gives them orders.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Marvelous is really strong and also quite fast at the same time.
  • Mole in Charge: In Super Hero Taisen, he became the The Emperor of Dai-Zangyack to learn the Shocker-Zangyack Alliance's true plans alongside Tsukasa Kadoya.
  • Offhand Backhand: Part of his fighting style, even leading up to offhand shooting in one occasion.
  • Only One Name: Unless his first name is Captain....
  • Pocket Protector: Takes a piece of Sally's necklace with him in his pocket, and it protects him from a fatal shot in his final duel with Basco.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: He's the Gokaigers' leader and Captain and he goes toe to toe with the strongest monsters the Zangyack throws at them, including Basco.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The brash and unpredictable red to Joe's calmer and serious blue.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man:
    • Manly Man to Don and Gai's Sensitive Guys. (One of two)
    • During 199 Hero Great Battle, he's the manly man to Alata's sensitive guy.
  • Shoot the Bullet: About a dozen in rapid succession.
  • Sneeze Cut: He tends to do this when someone says his names from afar.
  • Super-Strength: He's a lot stronger than he looks at first glance: in episode 7 he's shown throwing darts easily while wearing a heavy bracelet Don can barely carry with both hands, and in a flashback in episode 12, he rips the Zangyack tracking collar off Joe's neck (all the while withstanding the electric shocks, no less).
  • Stealth Mentor: Tends to play this role during crossovers due to his roguish nature, though he'll deny it.
  • Sword and Gun: Gokai Saber and Gokai Gun. The others, minus Gai, each have a set too, but due to the weapon swapping that occurs between them, Marvelous is the one who plays this trope straight most of the time.

    Joe Gibken

Joe Gibken/Gokai Blue | Actor: Yuki Yamada

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/joe_gokaiger_3773.jpg

A former soldier of the Zangyack who eventually turned against them to join Marvelous' crusade. While a stoic person, he hides a fair bit of guilt from his Zangyack days. He's the team's best fighter, often going in with dual swords.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Shares one with Don in the form of a Creepy Crossdresser in #23 and Vancuria in Gokaiger Vs. Gavan.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: With Marvelous in #12 during a flashback when Marvelous was trying to get Joe out of their forces.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: He's The Stoic of the crew and doesn't talk much, but he's their best fighter for a damn good reason.
  • Bring It: Shows one in 45 while changing into Tiger Ranger.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Brooding Boy to Ahim's Gentle Girl.
  • The Comically Serious: Shown first in the ending, but even moreso in #23, where he (and Don) run into an overly affectionate drag queen and end up in makeup.
  • Deadpan Snarker: With emphasis on the "deadpan". He loves snarking at events that he finds incredulous, as part of his stoic nature.
  • Defector from Decadence: Was originally a soldier of the Zangyack Empire but when he refused to attack a group of civilians, he was branded a traitor and eventually escaped with help from his commanding officer Sid and Marvelous.
  • Dual Wielding: When he trades his Gokai Gun for another crew member's Gokai Saber. In episode 4, he uses everyone's Gokai Sabers all at once.
    • In episode 12, Kaoru gives him the Double Disc from the Shinkenger finale which allows him to dual wield Shinkenmaru.
    • The finale has him using DekaMaster's D-Sword Vega and Don-as-Zubaan's sword form against Dailando.
  • Expy: Of "Pirate Hunter" Roronoa Zoro. Both are the swordsmen Lancers who prefer Dual Wielding and exercising in their down time.
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: Joe's duel blades to Ahim's duel pistols.
  • Implacable Man: Has a habit of invoking this whenever he gets really serious.
  • The Lancer: The first person Marvelous recruited to be part of his new crew and also fills the position of First Mate.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Has made an unflinching walk into enemy fire more than once. Also pushes himself to withstand the most amount of punishment. He's still fast and has great reflexes.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He has long, straight hair that's often in a ponytail (more than likely practicality purposes) and is fairly easy on the eyes.
  • Making a Splash: His Blue Slash finisher invokes the power of the five recent water-powered Blue Rangers.
  • Manly Tears: Despite his stoic front, Joe knows how to cry.
    • In #12, when he realizes the Sid he knew is gone forever.
    • And again in #30. Yuki Yamada is an incredibly talented crier.
    • And yet again in #38 when he finally destroys Barizorg. They must have realized where their bread was buttered when they found out that he could cry, and cry pretty, since they've been yanking his chain ever since.
    • And yet again in #45, only this time it's Played for Laughs when Navi accidentally destroys his Ninjaman tea cake.
  • Master Swordsman: From his default style wielding two swords, being able to use all five Gokai Sabers at once, and duel wielding swords bigger than himself, it's safe to say that he is this.
  • Mercy Kill: Destroys Barizorg after finding out the transformation can't be undone so Sid's soul can finally rest in peace.
  • My Greatest Failure: He feels immense guilt for letting his fellow Zangyack comrade Sid stay behind so that Joe can escape, leaving Sid to be converted into Barizorg. Come episode #30, Joe eventually learns that the conversion is irreversible and any hope of Sid regaining his human form is shot to hell.
  • The Quiet One: He's not one to talk often, only perking up during crucial moments.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The cooler and more serious blue to Marvelous' brash and wild red.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Goes on one against Zaien for the conversion of his old friend Sid into Barizorg and attempting to repeat the process on a great many humans. He pretty much goes Implacable Man against him and then destroys him with Sid's signature move.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Manly Man to Don and Gai's Sensitive Guys. (One of two)
  • Slow Walk: When he gets serious, he makes a habit of doing this. And when he does, the target is screwed.
  • The Stoic: Doesn't usually speak very often and usually displays a more focused personality.
  • Think Nothing of It: In #22, Joe goes above and beyond to help a boy fulfill a rather tall promise (getting from Tokyo to a nearby mountain entirely by bike to hang out with a friend), including using his Gokai Gun to save the boy from a troop of Gormin; afterwards, when Gai says that looking out for the kid was a very Super Sentai thing to do, Joe says it wasn't a big deal.
  • Tranquil Fury: VERY likely to run on that, just like in Super Hero Taisen.
  • With My Hands Tied: Not literally, but he often demonstrates a one-sword fencing style with his pistol or other sword tucked behind his back even though he's capable of Dual Wielding.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: Joe ran from the Zangyack because he could not obey an order to slaughter a group of captive children.

    Luka Millfy

Luka Millfy/Gokai Yellow | Actress: Mao Ichimichi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/luka_gokaiger_3876.jpg

Money-obsessed and proud, she's the second member that was recruited to Marvelous' team. A hardened character from a life of poverty, she's a snarky and standoffish figure has a soft spot for children — not that she'll admit it.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Shares one with Ahim with the Admirer being Trinoid #12 - Yatsudenwani in Gokaiger vs. Gavan.
  • Ass Kicks You: #6 shows her using her behind as a way to fight against the MOTW.
  • The Big Girl: Depending on the situation, she'll throw herself into the fight with enthusiasm.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Luka's initial reaction when Marvelous demands that she sells one of her rings so they would have Earth currancy to work with.
  • Blade on a Rope: Luka's fighting style involves using two Gokai Blades, which she controls using the cable ropes on her wrists.
  • Card Sharp: While skilled in poker while playing fair, Joe insists that Luka can never lose if she chooses. She proves to be very skilled with shifty dealing to scam members of the Zangyak Empire.
  • Catchphrase: "Shut it, stu~pid!"note  seems to have become this in her appearances post-Gokaiger.
  • Character Tic: She tends to twirl/wind her wrist when she's holding something in her hand. Most often seen with her sword when preparing to deliver a Final Wave.
  • Cool Big Sis: Mostly towards Ahim, as shown in episode 23.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Once lived a life of poverty while taking care of several young children, explaining her intense desire for riches. #34 also reveals that she would use said riches to buy a planet where children like those she cared for that were orphaned by Zangyack could live in peace.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Loves snarking at anything and anyone she's annoyed at. Sarcasm is practically a second language for her.
  • Does Not Like Spam: She is not a fan of broccoli.
  • Dual Wielding: When she trades her Gokai Gun for another crew member's Gokai Saber.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Go through a couple in reappearances throughout the franchise.
    • The Zyuohger crossover had her in long, straight black hair in comparison to her medium length, brunette hairstyle in Gokaiger.
    • Subsequent appearances, such as in Space Squad and Ten Gokaiger, have her in a black bob.
  • Expy: Of "Cat Burglar" Nami. Both had troubled childhoods that lead them to growing up with a love of money and riches.
  • Glass Cannon: She can be the most powerful member of the team. Although the thing is her defense is limited, possibly due to her Genki Girl-esque occasions.
  • Gratuitous English: She seems to be the member of the team who likes it the most.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Masculine Girl to Don's Feminine Boy. Especially noticeable during their "Freaky Friday" Flip.
  • Money Fetish: If there's even a remote chance of acquiring money or treasure, she'll take it with no hesitation.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Not often, but #6 has her in a maid costume for most of it, with the camera lovingly focusing on her legs and butt.
  • Meido: Dresses up as a maid in episode 6.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: 199 Heroes draws a direct comparison between Luka and Moune in their headstrong personalities that they come to accept, complete with them saying the same thing at the same time.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: In #34, the Monster of the Week impersonates Luka, but the rest of the team catches on when "she" eagerly eats broccoli at dinner, a food the real Luka absolutely despises.
  • Pirate Girl: Obviously, but her love of treasure cements this for her.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Luka, in #42's flashback, when she goes to see Don. And in general, on a lesser scale, between her past and the present.
  • Ship Tease: She said Gai was "kinda cute" in episode 17. Her habit of pushing/shoving Don may also be taken this way by some. There's also some shiptease between Luka and Marvelous in episode 21, she was the only one who truly understood Marvelous' predicament. For the Les Yay fans, Luka and Ahim have slept on each other's shoulders and fed each other food several times.
  • Shouldn't You Stop Stealing?: On the receiving end of this from Don and Ahim whenever she gains some more new jewelry.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Tomboy to Ahim's Girly Girl.
  • Tsundere: Heavy on the tsun-tsun side. While temperamental and sarcastic, she deeply cares about her crew — not that she'll readily admit it of course.
  • Unkempt Beauty: Was one of these in flashbacks to her past as a homeless street girl.

    Don "Doc" Dogoier

Don "Doc" Dogoier/Gokai Green | Actor: Kazuki Shimizu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/don_gokaiger_9356.jpg

A cowardly engineer whose klutziness covers up his smarts, he's the third member to join the crew — albeit in stranger circumstances than the rest of the team. While not strong or disciplined, he more than makes up for his lack of skill with tons of creativity and pragmatism.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Shares one with Joe in the form of a Creepy Crossdresser in #23 and both Shizuka and Kegalesia in Gokaiger Vs. Gavan.
  • Alliterative Name: His nickname takes it even further.
  • All Up to You: #43 is his day in the sun, as Marvelous is taken to be executed and the rest of the team is missing.
  • Badass on Paper: Snapped a Mook's neck, ran into battle while shooting the team's BFG, saved Marvelous from execution, and somehow he's the least skilled and courageous of the team.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He may not be as skilled or brave as the rest of the crew, but he can still kick ass.
  • Butt-Monkey:
    • Not even the Zangyack think he's worth their time, giving him the smallest bounty compared to his crewmmates. Subverted in this case as that lead to the "The Strongest Man in Space"'s downfall with his bounty going up.
    • And even in Gai's fantasy Gokaiger lineup, he's nonexistent.
  • Can't Catch Up: Doc's afraid of this happening, as while he starts out not near the warriors the original 3 are he could at least hold is own in a fight compared to Ahim being pretty useless initially. But by the time the show's started Ahim is just as capable as him and is rapidly leaving him in the dust in terms of combat as the show progresses, and then Gai shows up who's a much better fighter than him out of the gate. For the most part though, Doc remains a vaulable part of the team even if he's probably the weakest member of the group by the end. It's notable that when the Gokaiger face off against other Sentai teams, which happens quite a few times Doc is the only member of the Gokaiger to be clearly on the losing side of his fight with his other team counterpart.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Once beat some Gormins by making them trip over his grappling hook wire as he was lying down!
  • Confusion Fu: He runs on this when he has to fight. Lampshaded in #42 when Joe calls his fighting style "zany".
  • Cowardly Lion: As a Running Gag, Don often hides behind other members of the team when threatened. Even Ahim. Possibly lampshaded in #42, where he transforms into Black Lion Rio — but still using his signature fighting style.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: In #42, Ahim reads a womens' magazine from space that says Don was a legendary hero who slew a planet-destroying dragon and disappeared mysteriously. He doesn't remember any of it. Doubly subverted, since while he made up the legendary hero article, he did prove himself worthy of a being a Gokaiger, as seen in #43.
  • A Day in the Limelight: In a rather odd example, beyond his focus episodes, there's A Day of One Hero, a direct-to-DVD Mockumentary about Kazuki Shimizu playing Don and how it gets disrupted when a gun is found in his possessions.
  • Easy Amnesia: He's apparently a legendary hero, but doesn't remember any of it. When the Gokaiger first met him he told them that the Zangyack Empire destroyed his homeworld because he was too embarrassed to admit that he didn't remember his own past. Turns out to be a subversion, as he fabricated the legendary hero article.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": He's often called "Doctor" by the rest of his crew. Until Gai joined, his real name was only mentioned once, during the enemy's review of the crew. Lampshaded in episode 18, where Don becomes confused and upset when Gai addresses him by his real name.
    • #42 explains it in flashback: the original three hired Don to fix the Galleon's main computer, but the sight of the main cabin in total disarray inspired him to clean up the entire place single-handedly, prepare them an amazing meal, and then fix the computer by pressing a single button. The amazed Gokaigers invite Don to join their crew, but when he starts to give his name Marvelous stuffs a turkey leg in his mouth and declares that he's just gonna call him "Doc" from now on since he's "like a doctor".
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: Subverted in which he himself made it up, instead of having anyone else do it for him.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: He invented the Gokai Galleon Buster, the "team bazooka", pretty much entirely by hand.note
    • The flashback to his meeting the group in #42 showed him fixing the Galleon's computer by pressing a single button, his asking the others "Is this the only problem?" had the air of a tech support agent asking "Is the computer plugged in?".
  • Goofy Print Underwear: In the flashback in #42, his pants get caught on a nail when he tries to run from Luka; for the record, he wears plaid boxers with an embroidered frog on the seat.
  • Guns Akimbo: When he trades his Gokai Saber for another crew member's Gokai Gun.
  • I Gave My Word: In #42, flashbacks show how he met the others: Luka came to him (in disguise) to ask for help with the Galleon, but when he realized she was a wanted space pirate he panicked and ran. But later that night he tracked down the Galleon, saying that though he's still scared, he promised to fix the ship and he always sees his jobs through to the end.
  • Improbable Weapon User: He is really fond of using completely random objects in battle, ranging from pots and pans to a tree branch.
  • The Infiltration: In Ten Gokaiger, he accepts an invitation to join the derby's development committee to learn how they run the show, and put in some wiretaps which would later expose them.
  • Jerkass to One: Whereas Don is usually friendly and easygoing with everyone else, Gai stands out as the only person Don treats with visible disdain and annoyance. Initially, this was due to jealousy over how better the rookie was than him in a number of ways and how quickly the crew accepted and warmed up to him. With Don ultimately refusing to work with him at first to defeat the monster Ep #19, outright saying that being around Gai makes him feel pathetic. Of course, this is resolved by the episode's end (mostly), and for the remainder of the season, Don continues to dislike him just because he finds him annoying. It doesn't help that Gai continues to call Don "Dr. Don", which Don hates. He gets better as the series goes on though.
  • Kid-Appeal Character: He serves as the show's major source of comedy with his goofy, klutzy personality which draws in kids.
  • Lover Tug of War: On the receiving end of this, courtesy of Shizuka and Kegalesia. Granted, Kegalesia showed taste for a similar ranger...
  • Martial Pacifist: He doesn't like getting into fights, but he's still a capable pirate who can dish it out if need be.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Feminine Boy to Luka's Masculine Girl.
  • Neat Freak: If the flashback in #42 is anything to go by he is this but to be fair, the Gokai Galleon's crew was living in a Trash of the Titans before he came around.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: Played for laughs. In Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger vs. Space Sheriff Gavan: The Movie, Gai rescues the crew, but his attempt is rather late. He and Luka beat Gai up until Ahim convinces them to stop. They then proceed to yell at him.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: He serves as the main comedic figure within the team until Gai comes around.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Often wears a pink dress shirt.
  • Reluctant Warrior: Was roped into the crew after sorting out the problem with the ship's systems, cleaned up the cabin, and cooked a meal for the original trio.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Sensitive Guy to Marvelous and Joe's Manly Men (one of two). In addition, he also serves as the Sensitive Guy to Gai's Manly Man.
    • During 199 Hero Great Battle, he's the sensitive guy to Agri's manly man.
  • The Smart Guy: One of two. In his case, he's the team engineer.
  • Super-Speed: Not used in combat and Played for Laughs. Even if it took him 10 minutes, he managed to clean the entire galleon (which did not look easy), fix the ship, and prepare a nice meal without breaking a sweat.
  • Team Chef: He is the ship's cook. #19 shows that he even tailor-makes his recipes to suit each crew member's needs and tastes.
  • Token Good Teammate: As a pacifist, he's less bloodthirsty than the rest of the crew, even Ahim.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: And during unmorphed fights for extra badass points!
    • Case in point: his Episode 13 usage of the Figure Four Leg Lock on a Goumin... who fittingly enough, taps out. WHOOOOOOO!
    • Special mention goes to the fight during episode 11, when he executes a Hurricanrana on a Gormin and lands on his feet (most people simply belly flop.)

    Ahim de Famille

Ahim de Famille/Gokai Pink | Actress: Yui Koike

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ahim_gokaiger_9353.jpg

The former princess of planet Famille, Ahim was intent on joining the Gokaigers to get revenge for her planet. While weak at first, years of experience have made her a terrifying force to be reckoned with — especially when enraged.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Shares one with Luka with the Admirer being Trinoid #12 - Yatsudenwani in Gokaiger vs. Gavan.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She may look sweet but puts up a hell of a fight in battle. She was also prepared to swindle her crewmates out of a large amount of money in order to help a guy who had attempted to kidnap her to pay off his debts.
    • Also, when Ahim agrees to temporarily return the Hurricanegers' powers in order to rescue Marvelous, Joe, and Luka; she assures the Hurricanegers that the Gokaigers will take back the Ranger Keys, by force if necessary.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: The Gentle Girl to Joe's Brooding Boy.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Ahim's home planet was destroyed by the Zangyack and her parents were burned alive infront of her.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Ahim actually watched her parents get killed by Zatsurig as her planet was conquered.
  • The Ditz: A minor example combined with Cloud Cuckoo Lander. While she's quite competent and sane, she does tend to go off-track on things that regular people find normal (such as high school), given her background as a princess.
    • In #40, when flashing back to her first joining the crew, Luka describes Ahim as "my pace", meaning she does things her own way, which makes her seem ditzy when compared to the others.
  • Everything Sounds Sexier in French: Why else would she be called Ahim de Famille.
  • Expy: Of "Miss Wednesday" Nefertari Vivi. Both have had their homelands terrorized by evil organizations and are working towards their freedom.
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: Which owes to her pronoun of choice.
  • Fragile Speedster: She's incredibly fast in battle, but damage isn't her strong suit. She compensates for this by duel-wielding her pistols.
  • Girly Bruiser: The most traditionally feminine Sentai heroine since White Swan, and no less a butt-kicker for it.
  • Guns Akimbo: When she trades her Gokai Saber for another crew member's Gokai Gun.
    • And one time firing two guns with one hand. Simultaneously. The S.H.Figuarts action figure makes this Gokai Pink's exclusive prop.
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot:
    • Ahim's duel pistols to Joe's duel sabers.
    • Also in contrast with her and Luka. Luka is a tomboy who uses two sabres while she's a girly girl who uses two pistols.
  • The Heart: Emphasized in a Flash Back in #41, where the Gokaiger observe that if she hadn't been around as a balancing influence they'd probably have broken up due to infighting long ago.
  • Hidden Depths: The premise of #29.
  • Hotter and Sexier: In the Go-Busters team-up with her new haircut and gothic dress. Her actress becomes this as well.
  • Hope Bringer: Her motivation for joining the Gokaigers was to become this for the survivors of her homeworld.
  • It's Personal: Her fight against the Zatsurig in episode 41 because he destroyed her home and killed her parents.
  • Joke Item: The Abare Pink Key Emiri gives her in #29. While it does allow Ahim to transform, it doesn't include any powers.
  • Last of Her Kind: Ahim is possibly the last survivor of the Planet Famille, which was destroyed by the Zangyack, but #41 confirms that there are other survivors scattered across the universe. That said, her entire family is indeed gone.
  • The Load: Noteworthy of having already been Defied. As mentioned in earlier tropes, she was useless when first joined the team, but she trained hard into what she became by episode #1. Episode #41 reveals that while she might have been (initially) ineffective in battle, during the rest of their day-to-day lives, her ability to be peacemaker was crucial in keeping the other Gokaigers from killing each other.
  • Ojou: She's the emotional center of the group and is often admired by outsiders for her kind, graceful appearance. It should be noted that she was the former princess of planet Famille before it was destroyed however.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business; She becomes a lot more hot blooded and aggressive in episode 41 when the Zangyack arrives to destroy them. Even Joe and Gai are surprised by this change.
  • Plucky Girl: Flashbacks in #41 show that she wasn't good at anything at first: she got knocked on her butt by the recoil of the Gokai Gun, couldn't lift the Gokai Sabre, flooded the Galleon with suds while doing the laundry, and couldn't even interact with the others due to her sheltered upbringing. Obviously she stuck it out long enough to become the Pretty Princess Powerhouse we know and love.
  • Princesses Prefer Pink: A former princess and the pink ranger of the team.
  • Reverse Grip: The only Gokaiger to use it frequently when she wields the Gokai Sabres.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: In #41, the Monster of the Week is the Zangyack Imperial Guard who destroyed her homeworld and killed her parents right in front of her. When she sees him, she goes Attack! Attack! Attack!, even throwing Joe and Gai aside when they try to stop her. Later, when she has the others helping her, she gives him a royal beat down with their help, even launching the killing blow with the Gokai Galleon Buster, complete with a And This Is for... speech.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Though she didn't start out as such, her backstory in #41 reveals that she became a pirate in order to get the Zangyack Empire's attention and thus be put on Wanted posters, and thus serve as an example to the survivors of her planet that she was taking a stand against them.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Well, she is a princess turned pirate after all.
  • Spoiled Sweet: She's rich, but extremely kind and gracious.
  • Token Good Teammate: In fact, she's the only one who's still recognisably the same person in Gai's vision of the team.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Girly Girl to Luka's Tomboy.
  • Took a Level in Badass: As shown in episode 41, she wasn't even able to hold a sword or fire a gun when she first asked to join the Gokaigers. Now she's as capable of a fighter as the rest of the team.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Usually shown preparing and/or drinking tea.
  • You Are Not Alone: She insists on taking on the monster who destroyed her home planet and killed her parents all by herself, but the others assure her of this.

    Gai Ikari

Gai Ikari/Gokai Silver | Actor: Junya Ikeda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gai_gokaiger_5409.jpg

The latest addition to the crew, Gai is an eager Super Sentai fanboy who wants to prove himself as a hero. He may the Token Human in a team of experienced space pirates, but he's got more than enough gusto to be just as epic as the rest of them.

  • Accidental Misnaming: Is mildly annoyed when Sosuke calls him Yoroi (an alternate reading of his name's kanji, see Meaningful Name).
  • The Ace: As all of them are.
  • All Your Powers Combined: His Super Mode is formed from the power of the previous Sixth Rangers, and he has the ability to fuse other Ranger Keys together to create combined forms such as Go-On Wings and Gokai Christmas.
  • Ascended Fanboy: In-universe, Gai is a fan of Super Sentai, same goes with the actor Junya Ikeda, who is also a big Super Sentai fan. The fanboy part normally shows up anytime he encounters a member of a past Sentai. He actually flips when he is the only one of the team members not to see Gai Yuuki in #28.invoked
  • Badass Adorable: His hyperactive fanboy tendencies might have turned some fans off, but watch him and try not to smile any time he geeks out over a previous Sentai member (or even better, his bouncing around singing "Jingle Bells.") Now realize that he can switch from that to absolutely laying waste to the Zangyack so quick it's staggering.
  • Badass Boast: His response to Marvelous asking him if he really wants to face the Zangyack. He states he's going to smash the Zangyack and bring peace to the universe. The rest of the Gokaiger are very impressed by the guts it takes to say something like this, as the Zangyack rule most of the universe and took an entire Badass Army of Sentai to beat last time.
  • Badass Normal: More or less. He is the only human amongst aliens and while the other Gokaigers have about 34 Ranger Keys each, he only has fifteen Ranger Keys. Interesting to note, he defeated a bunch of Gormins and an Action Commander without using a Gokai Change. (Granted, he didn't have any other keys but it was still cool.)
  • Battle Cry: "Let's do it ecstatically!"note
  • Butt-Monkey: In the movies (Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger the Movie: The Flying Ghost Ship and Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger vs. Space Sheriff Gavan: The Movie) Gai really gets treated badly by the other Gokaigers, especially in the latter. On the side note, he's the one on the receiving end of some slapstick when Don isn't the butt monkey of an episode.
  • Big "NO!": He lets one out any time the other Gokaigers mix up Sentai teams, which usually leaves him the odd one out of a full lineup.
  • Chrome Champion: He's the third silver ranger in an anniversary series, right up there with Gao Silver and Bouken Silver
  • Determinator: It earned him his spot on the Gokai Galleon in #18.
    • In #32, he pulls a Big Damn Heroes moment in the mecha battle with a broken arm!
  • Dual Wielding: Does this with the Rocket Daggers every time he brings out the Go-On Wings key.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: At the end of the 199 Hero Great Battle film.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Despite being the only human amidst a pirate crew of Human Aliens, no one in the team has the ability to fuse their Transformation Trinkets other than him.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Goes through a couple in reappearances throughout the franchise.
    • The Zyuohger crossover saw him grow out his hair to a scruffy, bob-like length that's platinum blonde on top of that.
    • Ten Gokaiger sees him return back to his original brunette color, albeit with the length as seen in Zyuohger.
  • Finishing Move: Each of his Gokai Spear's modes have a different Final Wave finisher.
    • Spear Mode: Gokai Shooting Starnote
    • Gun Mode: Gokai Supernovanote
    • Anchor Mode: Two variations:
      • Gokai Legendream: Gokai Silver summons energy duplicates of Mega Silver, Bouken Silver, Gao Silver, Gosei Knight, the Go-On Wings, and Magi Shine, who fire energy bullets. The bullets turn into Deka Break, Kiba Ranger, Shurikenger, Time Fire, Abare Killer, Dragon Ranger, Shinken Gold, and King Ranger. They each slash the enemy once, followed by Gokai Silver dashing in for a combo slash to finish it off.
      • Gokai Legend Crash: Gokai Silver performs a series of slash attacks, accompanied by ghost images of the Sixth Rangers.
  • Fusion Dance: A different take on this trope. Gai has a unique ability to merge Ranger Keys together. He's done this with the Go-on Wings keys to make a half and half Ranger. He has done the same with Gokai Green and Red for a Christmas themed Ranger. And his Gold Mode uses the fused keys of the previous fifteen sixth Rangers.
  • Genre Savvy: Given that he's a fanboy.
    • Episode 20, when Navi gives the next clue. He easily figured out the clue was referring to Gingaman.
    • In #22, he shares his savvy-ness by having a bunch of Super Sentai factbooks printed up for the other Gokaigers, so they can find all the mission-critical information easily even if he's not around. However, #31 shows the others haven't been studying, since the answer to Navi's "skateboarding lion" message (Yellow Lion) was in the books, as Gai helpfully points out.
    • In #23, he's the only one to question why Goumin show up to help Basco (when Basco is supposedly just as much an enemy of the Zangyack as the Gokaigers are).
  • Hot-Blooded: He's very energetic and passionate about everything, pretty much all the time. From takoyaki, to world peace conferences, to grocery shopping. He regularly gets called out on it.
  • Impossible Genius: A lot of Gai’s knowledge of Sentai doesn’t really make sense In-Universe. For instance, he recognises the Goseiger’s mecha and the Hurricanegers’ enemies on sight, despite both seasons employing a Memory-Wiping Crew that would logically make it impossible to know about either.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": A given, since he's a Sentai fanboy that gets to be part of one and gets to meet and use the powers of previous teams.
  • Large Ham: As to be expected of a Ascended Fanboy.
  • Lethal Joke Character: He may be loud and energetic, but don't underestimate him in a fight. This goes for the "skill" he brings to the Gokaiger's table too. It turns out having insane encylopedic knowledge of Sentai's history and abilities is actually incredibly useful when your team's main offense is using those abilities and your goal requires understanding clues based off said history. Until Gai joins the team is mostly just kind of blundering their way through the clues and figuring out their abilities as they go along.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: He was the only Gokaiger to be on Earth when the Bakut Pirates attacked and destroyed the Gokai Galleon, leaving him unaware of his team's Failure Gambit to find out the Bakut Pirates' plot surrounding the derby they helped to develop. As a result, he ends up clashing with Marvelous.
  • Meaningful Name: The kanji of his given name can also be read as "Yoroi", meaning "armor", while his surname means "anchor". "Anchor Armor" is exactly what Gold Mode is.
  • Mr. Exposition: Provides the Gokaigers with information regarding the Sentai alumni.
  • New Transfer Student: As he explained in #40, his parents moved around a lot so he was constantly transferring schools; his determination to talk to everyone he knew despite not being able to stay for long is why he has lots of friends.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Gai has an annoying habit of grabbing onto a fellow Ranger (usually Marvelous or Joe) whenever a guest Sentai warrior appears.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Wears pink trousers and, in the OP sequence, a bright pink shirt.
  • Red Baron: Navi referred to him as the "Awesome Silver Man."
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Sensitive Guy to Marvelous and Joe's Manly Men (one of two). Though, he himself serves as the Manly Man to Doc's Sensitive Guy.
  • Sixth Ranger: To the main team. He also specializes in turning into other Sixth Rangers.
  • The Smart Guy: One of two. In his case, he's the Super Sentai expert.
  • Squee: His fanboy side really comes out whenever he meets a member of a past Sentai.
  • Super Mode: Gold Mode is the combination of all of the Sixth Ranger Ranger Keys, granting him gold armor while his visor flips down. The form grants him an increase in speed and strength while the Gokai Spear changes to Anchor Mode.
  • Swiss-Army Weapon: The Gokai Spear is a combination of three weapons — a trident, a laser gun, and an anchor (this one only activates in Gold Mode).
  • Team Chef: Seems to have joined Don in this role.
  • Token Good Teammate: It sort of comes with being a Sentai fanboy.
  • Token Human: Gai is the only Earthling in a team of Human Aliens.
  • The Worf Effect: Played very straight in #31 where Basco breaks his arm. He gets better later on however.

    Navi

Navi | Voice Actress: Yukari Tamura

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/navi_gokaiger.png

A navigator robot bird, she often provides strange directions to where the next Sentai teams are. She tends to get manhandled by the crew when her premonitions aren't specific enough.
