Space Empire Zangyack

    General Tropes
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/space_empire_zangyack.jpg
A powerful inter-galactic empire aiming to conquer the universe, with Earth as one of its latest targets. It first sent a huge fleet of ships to attack Earth, but said fleet was wiped out by the 34 Super Sentai teams. When a bigger fleet comes along, their forces and their top generals end up butting heads with the Gokaigers, whom they also have a vendetta on for evading them and damaging their forces.
  • Cool Starship: The regular Zangyack battleships, not to mention the Gigant Horse.
  • The Empire: And it is one of the most powerful ones in the franchise, considering it took all 34 Super Sentai teams to sacrifice their powers to be able to defeat the first invasion of Earth and they still have more, having conquered most of the universe. That battle wasn't called the Great Legend War for nothing.
  • Expy: Appears to be the World Government as a group of extraterrestrial conquerors.
  • Fictional Currency: Zagins, worth 360 Japanese Yen.
  • Meaningful Name: The empire's name of "Zangyack" is taken from the Japanese word "zangyaku", which means "cruelty" or "brutality". This empire, true to those words, is one that is very brutal, violent, and cruel in its conquest of the whole universe.
  • Planet Destroyer: In their quest to conquer every planet in the universe, the Zangyack Empire have also destroyed a few, including Ahim's homeworld.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Other than Warz becoming a Not-So-Harmless Villain in his final moments, the Zangyack members see the space pirates as a nuisance rather than a genuine threat to them. They're proven wrong. Damaras takes them the most seriously, yet that didn't stop the him from seeing Don as worthless which leads to his downfall too. Even the emperor only took them seriously when Warz and Damaras are killed and didn't do it nearly enough.
  • Villain Decay: Subverted. The second attempt fails even more than the first one and they never succeed in defeating a band of pirates. Though we can blame their overconfidence and the fact it's being led by the emperor's bumbling son for that. The humongous fleet in the finale that the emperor summoned however, does defy this trope, being greater than the one in the Great Legend War and while they didn't succeed in conquering Earth, it was powerful enough to destroy most of the mecha that the Gokaigers have and it took Marvelous and Gai ramming into the Gigant Horse with the Free Joker and hijacking it to destroy the fleet, and Emperor Gill had to be killed by a very long Rasputinian Death afterwards.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Aside from you know conquering and attacking planets that likely have billions of children on it, they have no qualms having their soldiers excecute a group of children. And when Zangyack soldier Joe Gibken defies this trope, he is denounced as a traitor and imprisoned.
    Emperor Akudos Gill

Emperor Akudos Gill | Voice Actor: Shinji Ogawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dmxy3hnuwaam4jw_2.jpg
"Damn you, space pirates!"
The true antagonist of the whole series, Zangyack's current Emperor and the one behind all the attacks of the empire
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: He manages to completely fend off Marvelous and Gai's attacks at the same time while sitting down. It takes Gai using Gold Mode to force him out of his chair. Obviously you don't get to be the Zangyack Emperor for nothing.
  • Bad Boss: He's less extreme than most in Super Sentai, but he still has few qualms about sacrificing his subordinates. He punishes Damaras harshly for his failure and later uses Insarn as a distraction to buy time for the Zangyack reinforcements to arrive.
  • Big Bad: The ruler of the Zangyack Empire and the driving force behind its incursions across the galaxy, though it takes him until #41 to fully step into the role. When he does though, stuff gets serious pretty quick.
  • Boring, but Practical: He doesn't have any amazing fancy abilities — just a Sword Beam, fireball launchers in his shoulders, and excellent sword skills. He still gives the Gokaiger quite a run for their money.
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: What his demise amounts to. He can shrug off most of the Gokaiger's attacks easily, even Finishing Moves, but they just keep up the onslaught until he finally gets worn down enough to finish off.
  • The Emperor: The ruler of the Zangyack Empire.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He was genuinely upset when his son is killed, as shown during his arrival in #41. There is even a memorial portrait of Warz Gill, when Akudos announces his plans of avenging him.
  • Evil Laugh: Gives a pretty epic one in #50.
  • Foreshadowing: The Zangyack coat-of-arms has his visage. In #34 we get a close-up of what Zagin bills look like, which also have his face on them. Warz's flashback in #37 shows him on screen, though obscured by lighting, for the first time.
  • Four-Star Badass: In the finale, he finally gets off his throne... and proceeds to beat down Marvelous and Gai in Gold Mode.
  • Galactic Conqueror: Pretty much rules most of the universe at this point.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: For the first two-thirds, when his son is the one leading the Earth invasion. He later steps into the role of Big Bad when his son is killed.
  • Knight of Cerebus: A stark contrast to his son, he's serious, very cunning, and quite frightening to look at.
  • Last Villain Stand: After the Gokaiger destroy the rest of his fleet, The Dragon, and his flagship (with him in it), he challenges the Gokaigers to one final battle.
  • Meaningful Name: The Japanese idiom "akudosugiru" means "excessively vicious." It should be noted the wording is close in spirit, but stronger than his son's own Meaningful Name.
  • Orcus on His Throne: All he's done so far are give orders. Gets up during the finale.
    • Of course, during the finale, he easily deflects Marvelous and Gai's attacks at the same time while he's still sitting on his throne.
  • Rasputinian Death: He survives: Being trapped in the Gigant Horse as it blows up; being pinned to the main console as it blows up; getting hit by a Gokai Supernova & Slash; getting hit with the powers of every single Super Sentai plus a Gokai Legend Crash; an attack by the six Gokaiger all in Super Modes; and a brand-new Final Wave, the Gokai Shooting Slash. After all that, it takes the team literally shoving the Galleon Buster into his gut and firing it point-blank to kill him. You can definitely understand why they didn't think he was gone at first.
  • Slouch of Villainy: Tends to lounge when seated in his throne.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: The Gokaigers lay the beatdown on him using an assortment of keys from practically all the Super Sentai teams, before being finally finished off with a point-blank Gokai Rising Strike.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Begins to get angrier when the final battle begins to turn against him, but really undergoes this after Gokai Silver slices his sword in half.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Gai's Legendary Crush breaks his sword in half.
  • You Have Failed Me: His first action upon taking command is to have Damaras beaten and imprisoned for failing to protect Warz Gill.
    Warz Gill

Warz Gill | Voice Actor: Hirofumi Nojima

The childish prince of the Zangyack who's leading the empire in its invasion and conquest of Earth. However, he tends to throw tantrums when things don't go out as planned.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Everyone in the Zangyack (sans Basco, who couldn't care less) is despondent when he dies in battle, Damaras blaming himself for it and sadly carrying his dead body being a prime example. This even includes his father and his father's elite guardsmen.
  • Alien Blood: His is blue.
  • Bad Boss: Just like his father, he often hits and kicks the Gormin when something goes wrong.
    • He is also not above using suicide bombers or turning Sid Bamick into a cyborg.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Yes, his childish personality makes him fun to watch, but as the series goes on, he comes up with genuinely good and dark plans and becomes a Not-So-Harmless Villain in his final two episodes.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: While he is one in charge of their invasion and is heir to the throne, Warz is nowhere near as competent or as tough as he likes to think he is. Furthermore, his massive Inferiority Superiority Complex leads him to increasing recklessness just to prove he's as capable as his father. Marvelous himself refers to Warz as "the Emperor's idiot son."
  • Blue Blood: Figuratively and literally, as we learn in episode 11 after getting shot by Captain Marvelous.
  • Conquering Alien Prince: He is of the Royal Brat variety. His frustrations at being unable to conquer the planet are Played for Laughs.
  • Defeat Catchphrase: When one of his empire's schemes is foiled by the Gokaiger, he'll usually shout "Curse them!" while occasionally hitting one of his Gormin in frustration.
  • Dirty Coward: He gets shot once and runs crying. Gets better in the end.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Is both the The Heavy and the leader of the Zangyack invasion force, but gets killed two thirds of the way through.
  • Even Evil Can Be Loved: Regarding his father Ackdos. Even though he is ruling over a tyrannical and genocidal universe-wide empire and even a Bad Boss to his subordinates, he does care for Warz and is genuinely upset about him dying.
  • Eye Beams: He has the ability to shoot lasers from his eyes as shown in Kamen Rider × Super Sentai: Super Hero Taisen.
  • General Failure: One gets the very strong impression his position is purely because he's the Zangyack Emperor's son. He proves this wrong occasionally, however, as he is capable of conceiving of brilliant plans later in the series.
    • #37 reveals that the Emperor did send him as commander because the Super Sentai were Brought Down to Normal, thus Earth would be easier to conquer. Incidentally, he proceeds to become a Not-So-Harmless Villain right after revealing he knew this the entire time.
  • Humongous Mecha: Gets one called Great Warz as a gift from his father in #37. It lasts up until its destruction in #38.
  • Killed Off for Real: In #38. And in case you aren't convinced, the next episode's first scene is of a front page in a space newspaper with the headline reading in big bold letters that he's dead.
  • Large Ham: Very, very loud and melodramatic such as overreacting to a minor injury and sobbing hysterically over the death of Barizorg.
  • Laughably Evil: While he can get some nasty plans that even makes Damaras disgusted, he still can't escape from his childish, sometimes hilarious, antics.
  • Meaningful Name: The Japanese idiom "warusugiru" means "way too evil," albeit in a sort of childish way. His father's own Meaningful Name carries the same rough meaning, but in more grandiloquent fashion.
  • Minor Injury Overreaction: In #11, his bicep gets grazed by a shot from Marvelous and starts getting hysterical. Not much of a surprise, really...
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: In #37, his dad sends him the Great Warz. He instantly tells Damaras off, having been aware the entire time Damaras was playing babysitter for him and playing dumb. He then successfully lures the Gokaiger into his trap and proceeds to effortlessly curbstomp them with the Great Warz. Even more impressive, he'd memorized Machalcon's attacks and dodged them!
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: #37 reveals he was playing dumb at least part of the time, as he knew Damaras was sent by his dad to be his babysitter. Considering he effectively lures the Gokaigers into a trap and had the foresight to prepare for Machalcon's attacks in preperation for the battle once he actually had the power to do something about it, he might not be nearly as stupid as he seemed...
  • Overlord Jr.: The son of The Emperor of Zangyack.
  • Pet the Dog: Flips his shit when Barizorg is killed, and when battling the Gokaigers who just unlocked their Super Mode, one of his thoughts is for his henchman Barizorg. This kind of mirrors Barizorg's own Undying Loyalty to him.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: He flies into one after Barizorg is killed. Unfortunately for him, it leads to his demise.
  • Smug Snake: Deliberately turns down an intelligent strategy in episode 9 purely to massage his own ego.
  • Spoiled Brat: He behaves like an angry five year old when he doesn't get his way.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Once he gets his hands on the Great Warz, he reveals to Damaras that he already knew he was babysitting him due to his apparent incompetence and immaturity and personally tells Barizorg that the others deemed him to be too inadequate to lead the Zangyack. He later goes on to pilot his new robot to prove to everyone, including his father, that he's not weak.
Warz Gill: As far back as I can remember, I have been surrounded by people who were ordered to side by my father, and all of them thought I was a fool, unfit to be a prince... [...] I'll show Damaras and the rest of my father's court how wrong they were!
    Damaras

Damaras | Voice Actor: Kouji Ishii

Warz Gill's right-hand man in the invasion of Earth, who tends to be more level-headed than the prince.
  • Avenging the Villain: His goal before his death is to avenge Warz and make it up to him for his failure.
  • Breaking the Bonds: He was a prisoner until #42, as soon as he was given by the emperor a second chance at the Gokaigers' heads, he not only does this, but destroys his cell as well. In other words, he could break out any time he wanted to.
  • The Comically Serious: Not really prominent, but there was episode 24, where he's left in charge of the air-headed Monster of the Week...and let's not even get to his singing voice.
  • Commander Contrarian: Ultimately subverted; while Warz (and the audience) suspected Damaras thanks to his actions in several episodes, he really was loyal and acted out of concern for Warz's well-being.
  • Cool Sword: Has one, which suspiciously looks like Kamen Rider OOO's Medalijabur.
  • The Dragon: He's Warz Gill's second-in-command and "babysitter".
    • Dragon-in-Chief: Damaras is far more competent than Warz Gill, who frequently ignores his useful advice.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He's genuinely disgusted by Warz Gill's plan to use an action commander as a suicide bomb in episode 17.
  • Evil Laugh: Only gets to do it one time, and it's a short one, but it's great.
  • Four-Star Badass: He's a Zangyack General and is called "The Strongest Man in Space". In #42, he fights the Gokaiger head-on and proves that he deserves the name.
  • Gatling Good: Attached to his Badass Cape; it's more of a coat he wears as a cape and the guns are in the dangling sleeves.
  • Killed Off for Real: Dies in #43 while enlarged, owing to meeting the business end of Kanzen GokaiOh's Gokai Kanzen Super Burst.
  • Meaningful Name: His name comes from "damarasu", which means "make one shut up," reflecting how Warz Gill always tells him to shut up as he voices objections to the plan of the week.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: A variation. Warz dies believing that Damaras hated him and thought him a fool; it turns out he was wrong and Damaras was loyal, but Warz never gave him the chance to explain.
  • Only Sane Man: He's the only one among the Zangyack command who seems to be taking the conquest of Earth seriously and often calls Warz Gill's plans out for being stupid.
    • He also sees the Gokaigers and their search for the Greater Powers as a legitimate threat and even once warned not to underestimate Captain Marvelous. Too bad he doesn't think the same way about Don Dogoier.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Now that he finally fights on the battlefield directly, he shows why he is the commander of the Zangyack army by owning both Basco in his true form and all the Gokaigers.
  • Rasputinian Death: Both times! The first time he gets hit by a Final Wave from Gokai Red and Gokai Green, a Red Charge Rising Strike, and then a Green Charge Rising Strike. After growing to giant size, he gets hit by the individual attacks of each of the Legend Mecha and then with the Gokai Kanzen Super Burst. For the record, just the last one would probably normally be considered overkill!
  • Red Baron: Known as the "Strongest High Ranked Soldier".
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: In #42, he's given the chance to get revenge for Warz Gill's death. The first thing he does is track down Basco and (after kicking his ass for letting the Gokaigers live) tell him "You're going to help me get those pirates or else". The second thing he does is completely and totally own all six Gokaiger at the same time. The episode ends with him dragging Marvelous off, saying that he'll suffer a thousand times the humiliation Damaras suffered for Warz's death.
  • Sword Beam: Seems to be his main method of attack.
  • Villainous Friendship: Seemed to have had one with Basco (He does call him Old Man Damaras as an affectionate nickname), until Basco not killing the Gokaigers just so he could make it easier to get the Greater Powers indirectly caused Warz Gills death. And it ended up being one sided as Basco stabs him in the back, figuratively and literally.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Basco stabs his sword deep into his back while he's distracted, forcing him to fight the Gokaigers badly wounded rather than at full strength. He does get better in his giant size battle, so much that the Gokaigers need every single one of their mecha to put him down for good.
    Insarn

Insarn | Voice Actress: Kikuko Inoue

Warz Gill's scientist who helps to enlarge defeated Action Commanders.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: Becomes this towards Kyousuke Jinnai in episode 14
  • Energy Weapons: Of the energy whip variety.
  • Evil Genius: She's Zangyack's resident Mad Scientist and technological expert.
  • Killed Off for Real: In #49 at the hands of the Gokaigers.
  • Make My Monster Grow: She invented the Monster Grower machine. Ironically, she doesn't have this happen to her, using a giant mecha first, then facing the Gokaigers personally after it's destroyed. She just gets destroyed by the Gokaigers but isn't grown.
  • Meaningful Name: Comes from the adjective "insan", meaning sad and gloomy. Could also be a play on the word "insane", reflecting her Mad Scientist aspects.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She's only female of the Gigant Horse crew.

    Jealouso

Jealouso | Voice Actor: Takahiro Sakurai

An Action Commander who goes along with the Zangyack for his own purposes.
  • Animal Motifs: Sea slugs.
  • Ascended Extra: While he's not the only Sentai Monster turned good to appear in Gokaiger vs Gavan, and Yatsudenwani also appears in Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters vs Gokaiger, he's the only Gokaiger minor villain to appear in Super Animal War.
  • Ascended Fanboy: If Super Animal War is to be believed, he's become a fan of sentai - having bought the DVDs for the previous 39 seasons.
  • Expy: Of President Gynamo from Gekisou Sentai Carranger - having feelings for the main female villain who falls for the Red Racer, and later on, pulls a Heel–Face Turn and finds work in the food industry. Fittingly enough, he makes his debut in the Carranger tribute episode.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: To the point where he has terrifying fire powers when he's jealous.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After Insarn orders him to be thrown out with the rest of the garbage, he loses respect for her and leaves the Zangyak Empire. Unlike other examples of this trope in Sentai, he actually seems to be on good terms with the Gokaigers, if the events of Gobusters vs Gokaiger are any indication.
  • Made of Iron: He survives a fight against the Shinken Gokaioh. Granted, he loses, but he does live. He also survived a blast from a Zangyack Bazooka.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is a play on "Jealousy".
  • Minion with an F in Evil: What he is pre-Heel–Face Turn. He did not come to Earth to conquer it but so he would capture Kyosuke for his love Insarn (That is until he finds out she loves Kyosuke). Him turning good is not so surprising.
  • Odd Friendship: According to Super Animal War, he gets along with AkaRed.
    Barizorg

Barizorg | Voice Actor: Gaku Shindo

Warz Gill's robotic bodyguard who is utterly loyal to the prince.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: He was converted into an obedient cyborg after rebelling against Zangyack.
  • The Brute: The powerhouse of the Earth invasion force though, unusual for this trope, he never really fights much, due to being Warz Gill's bodyguard.
  • Catchphrase: "Yes, Boss."
  • Cool Sword: A nasty-looking three-bladed one, too.
  • Cybernetics Eat Your Soul: He's actually a brainwashed cyborg created from Joe's friend Sid.
  • Evil Former Friend: Sid was Joe's mentor and friend when both were still a part of Zangyack.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Sid's transformation was revealed to be irreversible in #30.
  • Killed Off for Real: Finally killed off in #38, by Joe, freeing Sid's spirit.
  • Master Swordsman: He's an expert at wielding a sword. He's so good that he taught Joe everything he learnt wielding one back when he was Sid.
  • Meaningful Name: His name comes from the Japanese idiom "barizougon" (abusive language), a word that could be used for instance to qualify the verbal abuse of a Bad Boss towards his henchman. Interestingly, this ultimately would turn out to be a subversion given Warz Gill turns out to really care about him.
  • Mercy Kill: Joe vows to defeat Barizorg both to annihilate the abomination that was once his friend and to end Sid's suffering.
  • Morality Pet: Episode 37 and 38 reveal he is this to Warz Gill. Warz sees Barizorg as his only friend whom he would be really alone if he wasn't there. Not to mention Barizorg's death devastates him, leading to confront the Gokaigers one last time in a Roaring Rampage of Revenge. And given that he was the one who had him brainwashed from the Zangyack soldier Sid Bamick after he tried to rebel against them to save Joe, you'd expect someone like him to find him expendable trash.
  • Was Once a Man: Used to be Joe's friend Sid before being forcibly converted into a cyborg.
  • Yes-Man: To the point in which his catchphrase is "Yes, Boss."
    Dogormin, Sugormin and Gorim

Dogormin, Sugormin and Gormin

The soldiers of the Zangyack.
  • Elite Mooks: The Sugormin, being stronger than the Gormin and serving as officers for them.
  • Expy: The Dogormin are this of Emperor Palpatine's Royal Guards. The finale makes this more apparent when the two guarding the door to the throne room are taken out similar to Yoda.
  • Hidden Depths: The Gormin and Sugormin are revealed in episode 10 to play card games in their off time.
  • Mecha-Mooks: The Gormin are semi-sentient robots.
  • Praetorian Guard: The Dogormin are bodyguards to the Zangyack Emperor himself and are stronger than the average Action Commander.
  • Transforming Mecha: Sugormin turn into combat aircraft, and as of #9, bikes.
  • Law of Chromatic Superiority: Dogormin are basically Sugormin colored red and with functioning hands. Naturally they're more powerful.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: The reason you only ever see three Sugormin at once (except in scenes that use greenscreening) is because Toei only had three suits made. The same is apparently true for the Dogormin, who only appear in pairs.
    Deratsueigar

Deratsueigar | Voice Actor: Yuuichi Nakamura

  • BFS: He is armed with a big sword, which he can also use to deflect attacks.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: He is one of the emperor's elite guards. This means he can curb stomp the Gokaigers like it was nothing. Even they see a difference between him and the previously deployed Action Commanders.
    Great Professor Zaien

Great Scientist Zaien | Voice Actor: Joji Nakata

  • Actor Allusion: His title of Great Scientist is similar to Great Professor Bias who was also portrayed by Joji Nakata.
  • Animal Motif: A jellyfish.
  • Evil Genius: So much of one that he made sure the cyborgs he converts can't go back to their original free willed selves.
  • Knight of Cerebus: He is one of the darkest monsters in the Zangyack, what with him torturing people like Sid Bamick into become irreversible cyborgs
  • Mad Scientist: On par with Insarn, except he has a bigger impact by creating Barizorg's Brainwashed and Crazy state and trying to do so again against countless others.
  • Shout-Out: Strongly resembles Jinzo from Yugioh
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Despite being the MOTW of episode 30 only, his conversion of Sid into Barizorg gives Warz Gill a bodyguard (And eventually a Morality Pet) and forces Joe to have to kill him since the transformation was irreversible.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: When Zaien appears to check up Barizorg, he treats him like a successful project rather than a brainwashed person. Even Warz treated Barizorg like an actual person.

    Dyrandoh

Dyrandoh | Voice Actor: Masashi Ebara

One of Akudos Gill's two bodyguards who appears with the emperor after Warz Gill's death.
  • The Dragon: To Akudos Gill. Starts off as Co-Dragons with Zatsurig for one episode. Zatsurig is killed shortly afterwards, leaving Dailando as the remaining Dragon, a position that is further solidified after Damaras bites it.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He seems to be just as upset about Warz's death as his boss, as shown when he keeps berating Damaras and Insarn for failing to protect him.
  • Gratuitous English: Has a habit of saying English phrases in his dialogue such as "Yessir!" when Akudos preps him for duty.
  • Informed Ability: Dyrandoh is supposedly more powerful than Zatsurig, but hasn't really done anything to prove it save for his hammer.
    • He spends the final episode facing off with Joe, Don, Luka and Ahim and though he puts up a good fight he still goes down with even less of a fight than Zatsurig did.
  • Smug Snake: Both him and Zatsurig are pretty smug.
  • Verbal Tic: Dyrandoh's "choichoichoi" borders on this.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Dyrandoh's cheery Smug Snake persona finally slips after the Gokaigers return and utterly demolish his army, leaving him dumbfounded as to where their newfound power comes from and actually cursing them.
  • Villainous Friendship: Is friends with the Monster of the Week of episode 44: Bibaboo.

    Zatsurig

Zatsurig | Voice Actor: Hiroki Tōchi

Akudos Gill's other bodyguard with surprising powers. His presence on Earth is enough to cause Ahim to go after him for some reason...
  • Attack Its Weak Point: His third eye is the source of his powers. Destroying it will cause him to be just as vulnerable as any other monster the Zangyack deploys.
  • Avenging the Villain: He offers to do so when Ackdos plans to take revenge on the Gokaigers for killing his son Warz Gill.
  • Eye Scream: The Gokaigers decided that, if they ever stand a chance against him, they have to destroy the source of his powers first, that being his third eye. Ahim does the honors by sending the tip of her Gokai Saber into it before shooting it with her Gokai Gun.
  • A God Am I: He claims to be viewed as a "God of Destruction" throughout the universe.
  • Meaningful Name: Derives from the Japanese word "satsuriku", which means massacre. Given his common backstory with Ahim, yup, that's spot on.
  • Squishy Wizard: While he was able to destroy entire planets, once his third eye was destroyed, he proved no match for the Gokaigers.
  • Superpower Lottery: He has an eye on his chest that grants him Story Breaker Powers.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: His third eye had a multitude of destructive abilities which enable him to overwhelm his enemies and destroy entire worlds. However, he wasn't very skilled at hand-to-hand combat. Once the Gokaigers took out his eye, he was easy pickings for their Gokai changes.
  • You Killed My Father: Or "You Killed My Father and Mother and Destroyed My Home Planet", in this case. He was responsible for the destruction of Ahim's homeworld and the deaths of her parents. Upon first seeing him, she attacked him in a blind rage, but failed. It was with the help of the other Gokaigers that she was finally able to avenge her planet and family.
    Action Commanders

Shikabanen

The first Action Commander to appear. A sadistic monster armed with a gun that was sent out by Zangyack to invade the Earth after the failure of the Great Legend War.

Bongan

Salamandam

Zodomas

  • Animal Motif: A fencer
  • Dirty Coward: He claims to be a Combat Pragmatist (justifying that there are no rules in battle so long as you win), but Ahim pretty much calls him this for cheating on his duel against Joe with Sugormin pinning him down after he earlier claimed that 5 vs 1 wasn't a fair fight.
  • Hypocrite: He uses this to his advantage against Gokai Blue.
  • Master Swordsman: What he is. He demonstrates by slicing up an apple and proceeds to slice buildings in half. He even gives Joe a tough fight.

Buramudo

  • Animal Motif: Brain coral
  • Gatling Good: Wields blasters with this property
  • Psycho for Hire: Being an Alienizer, Buramudo was already wanted for planetary destruction prior to being hired by the Zangyack as an Action Commander.

Nanonanoda

  • Animal Motif:
  • Beware the Silly Ones: While being a goofy state-the-obvious kind of guy, he is still skilled at espionage (so long as he is not discovered) and is capable of starting a large fire.
  • Laughably Evil: While still a skilled opponent, he spends most of his fights obviously stating what is happening to him. He's the first monster to be comedic.
  • Too Dumb to Live: To his horror, he realizes that by catching the entire mansion on fire will actually destroy the golden tree that he was supposed to collect for the Zangyack when Joe points this out.

Cosmic Kenpō Master Pachacamac XIII

Sneak Brothers

Bowser

Yokubarido

Zaggai

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Upon his initial defeat, Ahim says a quiet "sorry" to him for framing him.
  • Animal Motif: Anglerfish
  • Butt-Monkey: From being framed for kidnapping Ahim to being scolded by Kyousuke about running a traffic life.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: While he has been a Butt-Monkey, he is still a powerful enemy that shouldn't be taken lightly.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He indirectly caused the events of episode 14 when Insarn falls in love with Kyousuke after witnessing a recording of him lecturing Zaggai.

Almadon

  • Animal Motif: Shrimp
  • Barrier Warrior: He wears a collar that emits a force field that was impervious to attacks
  • Suicide Attack: A unintentional example. Almodon's device had it explode on him and the Rangers when struck as punishment by Warz Gill. Fortunately, the new Gokai Silver found out quickly and was able to remove the collar without killing people.
  • Unwitting Pawn: He is tricked by Warz into believing his collar was upgraded when it was really a bomb. Damaras is appalled by this action

Osogain

Uorlian

  • Animal Motif: Piranha
  • Dem Bones: His special ability is to pull out bones from people, causing them to be lazy.

Stargull

Senden

  • Animal Motif: An eel, with a touch of Frankenstein's monster.

Sandaaru Jr.

  • Like Father, Unlike Son: While identical to and as much of a dangerous threat as Sandaaru Sr., the father was willing to betray everyone including his boss for his own goals while the son genuinely gets along well with Satarakura Jr. and stayed loyal to the Zangyack to the end.
  • Sensitive Guyand Manly Man: The cunning manly man to Satarakura Jr.'s clownish sensitive guy.
  • Threatening Shark: He shares this trait with his father, although less sociopathic.

Satarakura Jr.

Regaeru

Kiaido

  • Animal Motif: A turtle and Boba Fett.
  • The Dreaded: Being the strongest bounty hunter in space.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Like Basco, only Kiaido doesn't even bother with being Faux Affably Evil and is serious in every scene he's in.
  • Psycho for Hire: He wants the bounty from Zangyack only and enjoys battling to the deaths. He doesn't even listen to Barizorg's orders to immediately kill the Gokaigers so he can raise the bounty even further first.

A former member of the now disbanded Red Pirates and a former ally to Marvelous and AkaRed. Now, he and Marvelous are bound to clash every time they meet, not helped by this rogue looter joining the Zangyack.
  • Alien Blood: It's green.
  • Arch-Enemy: To Marvelous. He's responsible for the fall of the previous crew they were apart of together - the Red Pirates - due to betraying them to the Zangyack Empire, resulting in the Heroic Sacrifice of Aka Red, their previous captain and the friend whom Marvelous owes his life to.
  • Asshole Victim: Both the Gokaigers and Zangyack could not care less about him once he's out of the picture; not only because Marvelous wasn't very fond of him since the day he deserted the Red Pirates, but the Zangyack only saw Basco as nothing more but a liability and the Gokaigers did them a favor by getting rid of him.
  • Badass Normal: As shown in episode 20, he can fight evenly with a transformed Marvelous without the Ranger Keys.
    • Turns out he's not so normal in episode 31. His true form is a monstrous body covered in red armor, with enough power to own the Gokaigers singlehandedly.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: On the surface, some of Basco's quirks make him look cheerful and even humorous; an example of this being his first encounter with the Gokaiger team when he hides behind Sally and making it look like she was talking, showing himself when Marvelous can see right through it. When it comes to the means he's willing to use as well as his backstabbing, he's no laughing matter.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: Occasionally works alongside Zangyack and is officially one of their contracted privateers but pursues his own agenda and won't hesitate to betray them if doing so will serve his goals.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: A very dangerous and high-functioning one, though while Basco is a highly competent Knight of Cerebus, the Zangyack Empire is still the biggest threat around and even after Basco breaks ties with them, he's still defeated before they are. His threat level is above the Zangyack Action Commanders, but below The Emperor himself, who proves a much tougher opponent than Basco, even if Basco was the more emotional enemy for the Gokaigers.
  • Breaking Speech: In #48, he tells Marvelous that Aka Red didn't care about the Greatest Treasure in the Universe, he just wanted to give the Ranger powers back to the Earthlings so they could protect that Insignificant Little Blue Planet, and he risked their lives to do so. He says "I didn't betray the Red Pirates, it was Aka Red who was going to betray us from the start". Marvelous retorts that he doesn't care; he's a Gokaiger, and anyone who gets in the way of their dreams is going down — even if it's Aka Red.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: He gleefully admits several times how much he's a selfish, backstabbing bastard who doesn't like playing fair. The only time he justifies a betrayal is part of a failed attempt at a Breaking Speech to Marvelous.
  • Catch and Return: How Basco defeats the Gokaigers in #31 and #48, throwing the Gokai Scramble and then the Gokai Galleon Buster back at them.
  • Catchphrase:
    • Tends to say "Yoroshikuu~!" and "Jaa ne!" to our heroes a lot - it helps that Kei Hosogai's fluent English tends to leak into his Japanese accent, making his delivery stand out more. Also, whenever the Gokaigers (normally Marvelous) say they are going to defeat him, he responds with "Dekiru ka nā?" ("I wonder if you can?").
    • Usually right before a victory (for him) or a turning point in his favor: "In order to get something, you have to give something up."
    • Kei Hosogai's fluent English is actually not so surprising, because he spent most of his childhood in Washington State (including graduating from high school there), with a few years spent in Hawaii as well.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Betrays AkaRed and the Red Pirates, and will probably betray everyone else for his own gain. He also betrays and literally backstabs Damaras, which contributes to the latter's demise and also severing his ties with the Zangyack. To top it off, in #47, he betrays his only friend left, Sally.
  • Combat Pragmatist: He himself states that he doesn't like playing by the rules. One big example is that finding out how outclassed he is by Damaras (the strongest person in space) he complies with helping Damaras avenge the prince just to wait until he was vulnerable before literally stabbing him in the back and leaving the Gokaigers to do the rest.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: He is like Brajira from the last series due to betraying both the heroes and the villains he supposedly worked for and being above all self centered with some differences. A) While Brajira is a full costume character and an unstable Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist, Basco is played by a human even though he does have a true monster form and doesn't bother hiding how much of a scum he is. B) Brajira has monsters that he has to grow while Basco has a set of already giant monsters. C) While Brajira worked for three evil organisations, Basco only worked for one. D) Brajira was in the series from the very first episode, while Basco has his own episodes scattered around and didn't appear until episode 15. E) While Brajira outlasts all the other villains and becomes the Final Boss, Basco is only one of the Gokaigers' final opponents and the Zangyack outlasts him by three episodes.
  • The Dandy: While all the space pirates have a unique sense of fashion, the hat and feathers make Basco look a little flouncy even compared to the others. Also, while he isn't exactly averse to a battle, he does tend to let Sally and the droids do most of the heavy lifting.
  • Dual Wielding: Despite having two weapons on his person, he only uses both in tandem for the final battle with Marvelous in #48. Mid-way through the duel, Basco ends up losing his CariBlade to Marvelous whilst catching his Gokai Gun, giving him two guns to Marvelous' two swords. Basco later uses both his weapons in his fight with Kaijiki Yellow and Koguma Skyblue in Kyuranger vs. Space Squad.
  • Elemental Powers: What his Giant Battle Pseudo-Lifeforms are based on. In chronological order:
  • Enemy Summoner: He can creates clones of any ranger with his trumpet by using their Ranger Keys.
  • Equivalent Exchange: His personal philosophy is "You can't gain something without giving something else up". He gave up his friends in the Red Pirates in order to work with Zangyack, and later sacrificed Sally in order to steal the Galleon, Ranger Keys, and Navi.
  • Evil Counterpart: He's pretty much Marvelous without morality, honor, or trust in anyone.
  • Evil Former Friend: To Marvelous - he betrayed the Red Pirates to the Zangyack.
  • Evil Is Petty: Basco would do everything to get his way, even if it means resorting to underhanded tactics because he can, like endangering a child to get someone to cough up the treasure they're holding.
  • Evil Plan: To obtain the Greatest Treasure in the Universe like the Gokaigers, but for more selfish motives.
  • Face Death with Dignity: While Basco is shocked that Sally's necklace protected Marvelous from dying, he nonetheless accepts it and dies with a smug smile on his face.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He may show empathy in his mannerisms, as well as him using the pet name "Marvey-chan" for Marvelous. But trust us, Basco's anything BUT a nice guy.
  • Fifth Ranger: To The Team, as well as being able to literally summon Sixth Rangers.
  • Gotta Catch Them All: He succeeded in finding the Sixth Ranger keys that the Gokaigers were missing. He also has the Extra Hero keys as well. He's now attempting to track down the Great Powers as well (he has about five that we know of).
  • Hated by All: Almost everyone looks down at Basco with great contempt thanks to his history of Chronic Backstabbing Disorder, and it gets worse when he leaves Damaras at the mercy of the Gokaigers.
  • Hate Sink: Basco always looks out for himself, which proves that there's absolutely nothing redeemable or likable about him, in that he's willing to sell out anyone who he worked alongside with just to satiate his greed. Even Damaras, who is Properly Paranoid about him, was right not to trust him to begin with and only hired him in the first place due to the pirates threat to the Zangyack's goals.
  • Human Aliens: Subverted. His true form is a Zangyack-like monster.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: In his final duel with Marvelous, what ends up saving Marvelous's life is... a piece of the bomb necklace that he had put on Sally as part of The Plan in the previous episode. Granted that Basco was already pretty much dead at that point, but it prevented the Gokaiger's victory from turning pyrrhic. If that's not enough, Marvelous used Basco's own sword to pin him down for the final blow as well.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: After losing his keys to the Gokaigers a second time, he reveals his true form, a form that, according to his claims, scared even Akared. There's a reason why he had a 3 million Zagin bounty on his head, and it's not because he cooked meals for the Red Pirates.
  • Instrument of Murder: Basco has a trumpet that when played with Ranger Keys set, can summon those keys as mindless evil copies of those rangers. The trumpet is also capable of stealing the Ultimate Power from past Sentai who carry it.
  • Invincible Villain: Whenever it looks like the Gokaiger have him against the wall, he finds some way out of it. Marv has to pull a borderline Taking You with Me stunt to finish him off.
  • It's All About Me: This pretty much defines him. He's willing to do just about anything to get what he wants, and it doesn't matter to him how evil or atrocious his methods are.
  • I Have Your Comrades: Holds Joe, Don, Ahim and Luka hostage for the Ranger Keys.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: He is a sociopathic monster (not just his true form), so don't expect any care towards others to be anything more than an act. Just ask Marvelous and Sally.
  • Karmic Death: He made a habit of betraying everyone who ever worked with him...And both his attempts to kill Marvelous were thwarted due to Sally betraying him, allowing Marvelous to finish him off.
  • Kick the Dog: Chronic Backstabbing Disorder aside, Basco has zero respect for the Super Sentai and what they stood for beyond a means to an end either as mindless slaves made from the Ranger Keys or using threats to even children to his advantage.
  • Killed Off for Real: By Captain Marvelous slashing him in episode 48.
  • Knight of Cerebus: He's the first villain to truly give the Gokaigers a hard time, and he's more brutal and underhanded than anything the Zangyack had thrown at the Gokaigers so far. So, plots that involve him have a higher degree of seriousness than the ones where the pirates go against the Zangyack.
  • Lack of Empathy: Has absolutely no compassion for anyone except himself.
    • His reaction to hearing of Warz Gill's death is of smug indifference, calling him an imbecile prince, and is more concerned that Marvelous made things more complicated for him.
    • #39, however, shows he does have some degree of sympathy towards Sally, when he saves it from being finished off by Gokai Red and Gokai Silver. Though that may have simply been Pragmatic Villainy, considering he can't summon his Monsters of the Week without her.
    • #47 confirms the latter, where he flat-out blows up Sally in a Batman Gambit after it loses all of them.
  • Marionette Master: Can summon the physical forms of the past Sixth and Extra Rangers.
  • No Body Left Behind: After being killed by Marvelous, his body vanishes into red smoke.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Manages to defeat the Gokaiger, steal all their Ranger Keys, steal their home base, and come very close to getting the Greatest Treasure In The Universe. If it weren't for Navi delaying him and alerting the Gokaigers to his location, he would've won.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: By his refusal to kill the space pirates out of pragmatism, he is partially and indirectly responsible for the death of Warz Gill, depriving the emperor of his only heir. Damaras is pissed at him in #42 for this reason, not that Basco cares.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has this reaction for the first time when his Gokaiger Ranger Key clones are revealed to be the real ones, now with their guns pointed right at him. He has another one later on when Marvelous turns out to be alive, meaning he's not only dead, he failed to take Marvelous with him.
  • One-Winged Angel: Reveals that he can transform into an armoured creature not unlike the Zangyack, and utterly curb stomps the Gokaigers
  • Pet the Dog: Shows concern for Sally and even blocks a Final Wave meant for him/her/it. Though it's also quite possible he still needs her for his Monsters of the Week. Horrifically subverted when he blows her up in episode 47 without any remorse whatsoever.
  • Pragmatic Villainy:
    • Refuses to kill the Gokaigers, not because he cares about them, but because it will be a lot easier to get all the Ultimate Powers from them than it would be to hunt down the different Sentai teams one by one. This results in a very interesting situation in episodes 42-43, wherein Sally actually quickly grabs them away from the explosion that allegedly consumed them, and he literally backstabs Damaras. This is also because he needs the Gokaigers alive in order to steal the Ultimate Powers they've already obtained.
    • This may also be the reason he protects Sally, without her he can't summon his Monsters of the Week. Confirmed in #47 when she runs out. She instantly becomes expendable.
    • Another example is in episode 23. While having no problem endangering the kid that Matsuri was with, he allows the ambulance he is in to drive off to the hospital when she surrenders her Greater Power to him (which is actually just Ahim using her Magi Pink illusion magic), likely seeing no other point in antagonizing him since he gets what he wants.
  • Privateer: Works as one for the Zangyack empire, pirating on its enemies to avoid a bounty.
  • Punny Name: His name comes from Tabasco (hot sauce) and the Bhut Jolokia (one of the hottest chili peppers in the world.) Possibly also a reference to privateer/explorer Vasco da Gama.
  • Psycho for Hire: While he is working for the Zangyack for the reward, it's also very clear that he's having a blast doing it.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The sadistic, soft-spoken blue to Marvelous' hot-blooded red. (One of two)
  • The Rival: To Marvelous.
  • Ruthless Modern Pirates: He's the only inherently evil pirate in the show, and pretty much the only example of Truth in Television in it.
  • Sadist: His main motivation is greed, but he is also quite enjoying himself with giving previous rangers a choice between allowing him to take their Greater Power or risking the lives of the people they are protecting, as well as beating his enemies in one sided battles via his true form.
  • Smug Smiler: Constantly wears an arrogant, smarmy smile on his face. He dies wearing it.
  • The Sociopath: From his superficial charm hiding an effective Manipulative Bastard to an unempathetic and even sadistic personality to believing everything revolves around his own greed, he fits this perfectly.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Even with the large letter "B" on his coat of arms, Bandai and Toei romanize his name as "Vasco."
  • Sword and Gun: Just as the Gokaigers have their Gokai Saber and Gokai Gun, Basco has this combination as well with his CariBlade cutlass and the CariBlaster gun.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: His treatment and cold blooded murder of Sally got this reaction from the Gokaigers.
  • Troll: He just loves messing with Marvelous. As expected for the DiEnd Expy.
  • The Unfettered: If he wants something, he will get it by any means necessary, even crossing the line as many times as he likes. He sums it up with his philosophy of giving up something of lesser value to gain something greater, which is little more than an excuse for his evil acts.
  • The Worf Effect: Gets utterly curbstomped by Damaras in #42 to show off the latter's power.
  • Worthy Opponent: He sees "Marvy-chan" as an equal in combat.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Has absolutely no qualms about threatening a child's life in an attempt to force Matsuri Tatsumi to hand over her Great Power. And he was entirely willing to go through with it if Ahim hadn't switched places with Matsuri to trick him.
    • Again in #39, where he plants bombs throughout Moroboshi High School and threatens to blow the building up unless Kenta hands over Megaranger's Grand Power. The Gokaigers, with the help of the students, manage to stop it.
  • Villain Has a Point:
    • As low a blow as it was (and it in no way excuses his betrayal) he was technically correct that Aka Red's goal was to get the Ranger Keys back to their original holders on Earth to protect the planet and only mentioned the Greatest Treasure to get Marvelous on board. It did at least seem like Aka Red planned to teach Marvelous about the Sentai and the beauty of the Earth so that he'd come around to seeing it his way by the time their journey was over and indeed that's exactly what Marvelous does in the end. But he did recruit him on false pretenses.
    • He also rightfully tells Damaras while betraying him that underestimating Don was a mistake.
  • Xanatos Gambit: You defeat his Sixth Ranger Keys? He has more. You defeat those? He still has spare Ranger Keys. You beat those? He's got a monster form and demonstrates his power. Betray him? He's planted a bomb on you. Just about anytime something seems to weaken him, he's got some kind of backup plan. Marvelous had to use Sally's Macguffin to make sure Basco would die and he'd come out alive.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Subverted. After the Gokaigers destroy his last two Pseudo-Lifeforms, he instantly tells Sally that now that she's out of their Monsters of the Week, she's no longer worth keeping around, opening fire on her pointblank (confirming that saving Sally in episode 39 was indeed just pragmatic). It turns out this was a Batman Gambit to try and get the Gokaiger's Ranger Keys. Double Subverted when its revealed his backup plan involved blowing her up to wound Marvelous.
    Sally

Sally | Voice Actor: Toru Omura

Basco's alien pet monkey and partner in crime. She's able to fight the Gokaigers with her cymbals and summon monsters based on different elements when the need arises.
  • Cymbal-Banging Monkey: An alien version of a monkey albeit with cymbals that double as weapons. She's just as deadly as she looks.
  • Enemy Summoner: Can summon monsters called "Giant Battle Pseudo-Lifeforms" (based on different elements.)
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: She was never able to completely turn to the Gokaigers' side due to Basco blowing her up. At the very least, she saves Marvelous from dying.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In a Death Equals Redemption moment, she stuffs the bomb that Basco planted on her chest compartment when Marvelous tried to pull it off of her, containing the blast enough to save his life.
  • Morality Pet: To Basco. Until he eventually blows her up without any remorse.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: Arguably, she's an alien monkey, though she does have some human values.
  • Redemption Equals Death / Death Equals Redemption: Zigzagged between the two. After Sally is seemingly betrayed and discarded by Basco, the Gokaigers take her back to their ship and treat her wounds. In actuality, it was a ploy by Basco to get Sally into their confidence and steal their Rangerkeys. But after seeing the comradery among the Gokaigers, especially after they reveal they knew it was a trap but still offered her a place among them, Sally realizes Basco would never do the same for her and attempts to switch sides, only for Basco to reveal that the necklace he had given Sally was actually a bomb which he then detonates to kill Sally and severely wound Marvelous.
    • Becomes the latter when the next episode reveals that the reason Marvelous survived was because at the last moment, Sally shoved the exploding pendant into her chest compartment, thereby shielding him from the worst of the explosion.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: Her being betrayed and killed by Basco is what leads to his Near-Villain Victory.
  • Spanner in the Works: In Gokaiger vs. Gavan, Basco's fight against the Go-Busters is foiled when Sally decides she'd much rather sit around and eat the fruits Yellow Buster gave her.
  • Strong as They Need to Be: Sally slides back and forth from easily dispatched comic relief monster, to an impassable wall that keeps Marvelous from getting to Basco.
  • Vile Villain, Laughable Lackey: She's played for laughs far more than her Knight of Cerebus boss.
