Characters debuting in F-Zero AX

    # 31 - Don Genie

An intergalactic trading magnate, Don Genie is filthy rich, and he views all other humans as below him because of that. He has been arrested a few times before for illegal dealings, but Don Genie was always able to easily pay his way out of jail. Recently, he became a F-Zero pilot, probably to advertise his trading company. He also shows interest in controlling the whole sport.

His machine is the Fat Shark, which has an A-B-E rating, 2490kgs and two SS-C503-LV engines. Don Genie spent billions on it, furnishing it with a fridge and microwave as well as making sure it could perform exceptionally while also being strong enough to protect Genie from his (many) enemies. Of course, all that speed and weight make this machine a tad difficult to control.

  • Adipose Rex: He's not royalty, but his wealth is more than a match for his girth.
  • Animal Motifs: Sharks are known as the "gangsters of the sea", no thanks to their voracity and predatory behavior.
  • Anime Hair: It's just as ridiculous as friggin' Heihachi!
  • Arms Dealer: His organization, the Universal Traders, illegally sells energy resources and weapons.
  • Ascended Extra: Many believe he's based off of a bald crime boss Captain Falcon arrests in the SNES F-Zero comic.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: "Those who should be at the top get there. That's all there is to it."
  • Badass Boast: He gets one of the more memorable ones.
Don Genie (on the key to his victory): "My own judgment. I've defeated more rivals than there are stars in the sky."
  • Badass Cape: Well, he certainly tries his hardest to pull it off, doesn't he?
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: That white suit of his doesn't look half-bad, and he's a competent racer.
  • Bald of Evil: Though the back and sides are pretty grown out, making this a downplayed example.
  • Classy Cane: Genie is usually seen with one, likely as a way to show off his extreme wealth.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: As the head of the universal traders, on numerous occasions he has been arrested for illegally trading weapons, and each time will pay a small fortune to stay out of jail.
  • Difficult, but Awesome: The Fat Shark, BIG TIME. It handles just as bad as the Crazy Bear, and is prone to drifting even in the widest of corners. However, its high top speed, coupled with surprisingly powerful acceleration and boost for a heavyweight vehicle, makes those who mastered it an unstoppable Lightning Bruiser on the circuit that can both set record times and pack a massive punch. It's also a popular machine for world records as its heavy frame and drifty handling make it well-versed for snaking.
  • The Don: In case that "Don" before the "Genie" didn't make it clear.
  • Everything's Sparkly with Jewelry: He wears some huge gemstones.
  • Fiction 500: He's so rich, that his wealth has worked as a "get out of jail free" card on multiple occasions.
  • Greed: He's the series' bulbous representation of the concept.
  • High-Class Glass: Wears a monocle over his right (scarred) eye.
  • Lightning Bruiser: As mentioned in Difficult, but Awesome, the Fat Shark is extremely fast, quick off the line and extremely durable, with its only real flaw being godawful handling. Justified as Genie really spent a fortune on it.
  • The Mafia: The name should've given it away. That, and his sinister theme music.
  • Rags to Riches: During an interview, he states that "I've taken every chance that came my way, and clawed my way out of the slums."
  • Rich Bastard: A narcissistic Jerkass who considers everyone else (except maybe Falcon, who has potential according to Don Genie) to be Muggles undeserving of his presence and affluence. If Don Genie has a heart, it must be stored away in a vault under his piles and piles of money.
  • Self-Made Man: "Clawed" his way out of the slums and pulled down his competitors to become the jackass he is today.
  • Shout-Out: Listen to the bridge of his character theme. It shares most of the notes with the Leitmotif from The Godfather. Fitting for a guy like him.
  • Smoking Is Cool: He seems to think so. Apparently, his smoking habits are so cool that the prize money won't even pay for his cigars.
  • The Syndicate: Is believed to have ties to Black Shadow.

    # 32 - Terry "Digi-Boy" Getter
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2ef8da44a5ea6292d870ca346505e4e7.png
Click here to see his F-Zero machine

A young genius attending the highly-esteemed Einstein Academy. His nickname "Digi-Boy" comes from his ability to use any digital device, including the ones he created himself. After several analysis and simulations of every past F-Zero race, Digi-Boy has allegedly devised the perfect equation for his machine to win the F-Zero Grand Prix, thus proving his genius once and for all.

His machine is the Cosmic Dolphin, rated E-A-C, weighing 900kgs and equipped with two TG3014 engines. Designed by Digi-Boy himself, it's a boost-focused machine with minimal body strength, matching its pilot's safe driving style. Most of the difficult driving is done by the machine's system itself, which means Digi-Boy can conceivably pilot his craft with just one hand.

    # 33 - Dai San Gen
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2c10adbb8e563df5e2a02a15838d2ec2.png
"Two heads are better than one. Three heads are better than two. We're the cutest triplets in the galaxy! Dai San Gen!"
Click here to see their F-Zero machine

A trio of triplets from planet Shinar, whose inhabitants can communicate through telepathy and live up to two centuries, but never grow much higher than 3 feet. Dai San and Gen show amazing teamwork and plan in winning three trophies, so each of them can have one. They also love to crash into parties while travelling through space.

Their machine is the Pink Spider, rated C-C-A, weighing 1110kgs and equipped with three MJ-1192 engines. It was a gift from an elder relative, Professor Tsumo Reach, who won the machine through gambling. Professor Reach made a few modifications to the vehicle, such as three cockpits and emergency ejection seats, to suit the needs of his nephews and niece, who were allowed to race together. Dai takes care of the handling, San is responsible for the navigation and Gen manages acceleration plus braking. The machine possesses two crescent-shaped balances called the "spider's legs" that allow it to have one of the best grip abilities among the racing ships.

    # 34 - Spade
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b604d174902a85a11acd3f29b28c2dce.png
"Don't focus so much on the finish line that you miss the tricks I'm pulling right in front of you."
Click here to see his F-Zero machine

A circus magician of unknown species and origins, Spade is devoted solely to entertain audiences with his magic. He joined F-Zero in order to help out with his circus' finances, however, his driving skills are rather unconventional, favoring flashiness over any sort of efficiency. Spade is known for his volatile nature at the racetrack, pulling amazing tricks during races, but also dropping out from them altogether if he gets bored enough.

His machine is the Magic Seagull, sporting B-A-E rating, 1330kgs and three NG-B35-HOT engines. Built by Spade's buddies at the circus, it features an aerodynamic design that allows for full boosting prowess. It's a very dangerous machine to pilot though, due to its low grip abilities, unusual width that makes it a larger target and, most strangely of all, no apparent doors, meaning that if the vehicle explodes, Spade will go with it, unless he pulls an escape trick at the last minute.

  • Awesome, but Impractical:
    • While his machine is one of the coolest-looking, it's got more flaws than some other notable machines, so it can be tougher to use. And it's not easy to unlock in GX — you need to beat every Story Mode stage on Hard.
    • His own racing style could be described as this. It's full of tricks and showy maneuvers, with no real concern for victory.
  • Badass Cape: More like Badass Sideskirt. Somehow, he makes it look damn classy.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Spade is known for his show-stopping presence on the track, performing dazzling, artful tricks in his Magic Seagull. However, he tends to lose interest easily, and will drop out of races frequently— as reflected by his poor track record.
  • Cool Mask: His bio implies that he constantly wears his mask— to the point where no one, not even his friends at the circus, knows what he really looks like without it.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: As seen in his Pilot Video, although he uses MAGIC to spice it up into a Chinese dish that looks edible.
  • Doting Parent: He's overjoyed to learn that his 3-year-old son is beginning to look just like him.
  • The Faceless: No one, not even his fellow circus mates, has seen his face behind the mask.
  • Ghost in the Machine: It's implied that the sphere that resides where Spade's abdominal region should be is his real body (or soul/mind/consciousness/etc.) and the rest of his form is some sort of puppet. His aforementioned Pilot Video appears to affirm this, as the sphere appears onscreen first before the rest of Spade's body teleports in.
  • Jack of All Stats: The Magic Seagull has a nice boost and can take some punishment. Not the fastest vehicle though.
  • Master of Illusion: It comes with the territory, him being a circus magician and all.
    • Magic and Powers: We know that his powers are supernatural in origin, but it's vague on what exactly those powers are. Telekinesis and spontaneously summoning objects (cards, balls, etc.) are shown to be two of them.
  • Noodle People: He's only slightly wider than your typical CLAMP fare.
  • Playing Card Motifs: He's named after the spade (♠) suit in a standard game of cards, and one of his poses in his character bio shows him doing fancy card tricks.
  • Saw a Woman in Half: By his admission, this is his best trick.
  • Shrouded in Myth: Little is known about Spade. Not even his companions know much about who he is. Heck, even Spade himself doesn't seem to fully understand his appearance or powers.
Mr. Zero: Were you born like this?
Spade: You mean my body? When I was born, I was enclosed in a globe.
  • Stage Magician: His main profession besides racing is a magician at a circus.
  • Technician Versus Performer: He's the performer. Anyone else is the technician.
  • Third Eye: On his mask.

    # 35 - Dai Goroh
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fe9aea8830977e18dd8736a303d0f605.png
Click here to see his F-Zero machine

The son of Samurai Goroh, Dai Goroh takes after his father a lot. In fact, he surpasses his own dad in many aspects, such as piloting and swordsmanship, but still shows nothing short of admiration for his old man. At only 10 years old, Dai was able to prove his skill and became qualified to race in F-Zero, where he plans to beat Captain Falcon and earn the respect of his father. He's also quite the troublemaker, as even Goroh has difficult keeping him under control.

His machine is the Silver Rat, rated D-A-D, weighing 880kgs, equipped with one RM-0634 engine and created by Toraemon Echigoya, the same guy who created the Fire Stingray and the Green Panther (it's unknown if this was stolen as well, like those two). Dai didn't want to rip off his own dad, so he tried to emulate his machine after Guster's vehicle instead. As the smallest machine in the series so far, it boosts nicely, but doesn't have any body strength to speak of.

  • Animal Motifs: The rat. A small, cunning animal that is known for its adaptability.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Like his father, Dai Goroh sports a kanji emblazoned on the front of his white t-shirt. Unlike his father, the kanji changes with each alternate color scheme of his.
    • Also the fact that "Dai" is Japanese for "big," giving him an Ironic Name.
  • Bragging Theme Tune: And it gets right to the point, too: TOO FAST! YOU LOSE, I WIN!
  • Child Prodigy: Discussed. His bio states that he has more aptitude and potential as a pilot than his father and many are eager to see what kind of pilot he'll be when he matures. Unfortunately, this is cruelly subverted by his machine's actual performance.
  • Covert Pervert: His Pilot Video, where he cuts out a racy silhouette of a woman out of paper and makes a suggestive look in admiration.
  • Fragile Speedster: Downplayed. The Silver Rat is fragile and not fast at all (besides mediocre acceleration). It is good at cornering though.
  • Generation Xerox: Copies a lot from his dad, including clothing style and rivalry with Captain Falcon.
  • Gonk: He's anything but a cute little boy, which perhaps explains why he rides around in the Silver Rat. His Pilot Video, on the other hand, has Dai Goroh looking considerably more handsome.
  • Hero-Worshipper: For his father.
Dai Goroh (on what he treasures): "This Samurai Goroh plastic figure. I just got it!"
Dai Goroh (on who he respects the most): "My old man! He's the best thief in the whole world!"
Dai Goroh: "He's fat and he snores, but he's so good at what he does. He's the greatest!"
  • I Know Karate: "Not just the martial arts! Soccer and baseball, too! But I'm not too good at math."
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Expect to see Daigoroh a lot. Even the game flip-flops on this.
  • Ironic Name: His name literally means "Big Goroh".
  • Joke Character: The one thing the Silver Rat does right is handling. Everything else is terrible, except for acceleration, which is only average.
  • Kid Samurai: Taking after his Dad Samurai.
  • Overlord Jr.: He also dislikes Falcon and wants to defeat him for his dad. Just like Goroh, however, he isn't actually evil or bad.
  • Missing Mom: And no, Lisa Brilliant doesn't count, by the virtue of existing in a different timeline.
  • Pint-Sized Kid: He's actually shorter than the two-years-younger Digi-Boy, and this is factoring in the oversized wooden geta sandals he's wearing.
  • Wearing a Flag on Your Head: Has the Japanese on his, just like his dad.

    # 36 - Princia Ramode
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d5118a7222c31a871b03e1d4bbe2b104.jpg
Click here to see her F-Zero machine

The princess from the Desert Kingdom of planet Magica, Princia Ramode is a curious girl who often secretly leaves her boring palace life to have adventures all around the galaxy. After coming across a F-Zero race, Princia became pumped and decided to try it out, much to the concern of her servants. Despite not being a good pilot, Princia doesn't care, as she races just for the thrill.

Her machine is the Spark Moon, which has a a B-C-B rating, 1630kgs and two KD-E072-PS engines. It's a well-rounded vehicle developed by the science department of Princia's Kingdom. It was specifically designed to allow even an inexperienced pilot like Princia to achieve actually decent results, featuring a cutting-edge safety system (to protect the princess from harm) and an advanced artificial intelligence formulated with data from famous pilots.

    # 37 - Lily Flyer
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9b80953f85a002241a9dedcc343466dd.png
"I want you to realize that I'm capable of even more than this."
Click here to see her F-Zero machine

A soldier of the Galactic Space Forces, Lily Flyer was put in an extensive training program not long after she was born. Now at the tender age of 14, Lily has already been part of several combat situations. Though she sometimes seems naive due to her young age, she is dutiful and obedient towards her superiors. Lily became an F-Zero pilot in order to advance her training, with the goal of obtaining valuable experience in making quick decisions under pressure (all her winnings also go directly to the Galactic Federation).

Her machine is the Bunny Flash, which has a D-B-A ranking, 1414kgs and two FGS-A007M engines. A land warship created by the Manticore Engineering Firm, it's actually equipped with cannons, plus great cornering abilities in order to outmaneuver enemy forces in combat.

  • Animal Motifs: Rabbits may look cute and harmless, but they can be dangerous too.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Wears her platinum-blonde hair in a short bob.
  • Child Soldier: As a member of the Galactic Space Reserves, Lily has been training since she was young and has even been in action a few times.
  • Collector of the Strange: Her hobby is collecting frog knick-knacks. When she's not endlessly training, that is.
  • First-Name Basis: Only her artwork labels her as "Lily Flyer", in-game it's just "Lily".
  • Fragile Speedster: Bunny Flash is good at boosting and accelerating, plus it does cornering very well. Not fast though, and it's ironically pretty fragile for a military vehicle.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: Wears a pair of goggles on her head, but she's never seen pulling them down over her eyes— not even when she's racing.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She's earnest and thoughtful. Her military training may have had something to do with it.
  • Irony: The Bunny Flash is supposed to be "one of the leading next-generation land warships," complete with bulky armor. Its Body has a subpar rating of D, far less durable than a large number of the F-Zero machines it's up against.
  • Little Miss Badass: Certainly qualifies— considering that she's military-trained, has served as support in wars, and is competing in the F-Zero championship with what is essentially a modified tank at the age of 14.
  • Modesty Towel: Her GX Pilot Video.
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: For a 14-year-old girl, she sure is sporting one hell of an ominous and badass militaristic theme song.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Her ideal man. The "tall" and "handsome" parts, at least. Two out of Three Ain't Bad, right?
  • Token Mini-Moe: Quite easily the youngest female pilot in any continuity.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Though a straight-laced army girl with some strange hobbies and a love of exercise and physical conditioning, Lily is quick to nearly gush about what she looks for in a man and has a rather extravagant and unorthodox fashion sense for a member of the military. She also rocks back and forth during her F-Zero TV interviews in a manner reminiscent of the Coy, Girlish Flirt Pose.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Fruit parfait. Unfortunately, the mess hall doesn't serve it often.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: She's a teenager, but due to her upbringing in the military, her insight and maturity are noticeably more profound than a good portion of the cast.
  • Younger Than They Look: Her light blonde hair can be mistaken for white at first sight.

    # 38 - PJ
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fc7db38713892b38fcbe5e90f0d6a41c.png
"They have their pride as drivers. I have my pride as a taxi driver, so I won't let them beat me."
Click here to see his F-Zero machine

PJ is the best cabbie working for Galaxy Cab, an intergalactic taxi service. A skilled driver that never follows traffic laws, PJ always manages to elude the Galactic Police during high speed chases. He ended up getting suspended from his job after demanding higher wages and a larger, more inclusive cab, leaving him without an income or anything for his taxi to do. However, when he spotted an article about the F-Zero Grand Prix, he decided to modify his taxi and enter the race. Despite his suspension, he still advertises for his company while racing.

His machine is the Groovy Taxi, ranked B-D-B, weighing 1280kgs and featuring 2 pairs of CY94-H2 and NG-C32 engines. Even though the cockpit seats four, this machine's grip rating is high, making it very easy to control. However, reckless driving isn't tolerated in the taxi industry, thus the Groovy Taxi lacks superior boost capability. The machine has a meter in it like any other taxi, and calculates the fare for each race when finished.

  • Amusing Alien: He's a cabbie, for starters. Just look at his adorable yellow checkered uniform.
  • Berserk Button: Drunks and couples that can't keep their hands off of each other. While he doesn't go bonkers, it still goes above and beyond a simple pet peeve.
  • Hypocrisy Nod: Having been suspended from Galaxy Cab (despite being its best driver) for the simple request of an increase in wages and a larger cab to accommodate his passengers (some of whom were up to 30' tall), PJ's involvement in F-Zero is a slight Take That!, although by still wearing his cabbie uniform and driving the Groovy Taxi, he's still advertising for Galaxy Cab. PJ is aware of this.
  • Little Green Men: Has the look in yellow, but personality-wise, he'd be one of The Greys.
  • Jack of All Stats: Aside from good cornering, the Groovy Taxi is fairly standard across the board. Presumably, this is because it's original purpose was as a taxi, not a racing machine.
  • Shout-Out: To the Crazy Taxi series, seeing as Sega helped develop GX and AX.
  • The Taxi: He's a cab driver. His machine is also called the Groovy Taxi.
  • Watch It Stoned: His Pilot Video is in a deathmatch with Dr. Stewart's as to which one is the bigger hallucinogen. The psychedelic sound of his theme doesn't help in the slightest.

    # 39 - QQQ
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7ab910e31cdcde1ed8beff1e944868eb.png
Click here to see its F-Zero machine

QQQnote is Phoenix's Robot Buddy whom he repaired after finding it buried in a scrap heap. QQQ's original purpose was for land mine detection and disposal, although it also contained data for time travel navigation, mysteriously enough. Unfortunately, QQQ was damaged during its discarding, which prevents it from accessing said data until its A.I. receives further repairs. In any case, QQQ assists Phoenix in his mission, using Captain Falcon's data as the base for its driving.

QQQ's machine, the Rolling Turtle, is ranked A-D-B, weighs 999kgs and features four SS-A310-CT engines. It was built by Phoenix out of the remains of a military satellite, which is likely the reason for it having so much durability.

  • Animal Motifs: Turtles are known for their shy nature and resilience.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: It uses Falcon's racing data as the basis for its driving strategy.
  • Cute Machine: YES. The fact that it's so modest and shy (it gets nervous when its fans are watching) makes it all the more endearing. Not to mention its Pilot Video.
  • Humble Hero: As evidenced by his startled, even flustered, I'm Not a Hero, I'm... reaction to Mr. Zero.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Ever since Phoenix found him and fixed him up, QQQ has been tormented by some unknown, inaccessible piece of data hidden in its A.I. In reality, QQQ is Phoenix's Time Machine, and will be unable to use its time-traversing navigation hardware until it is properly repaired.
  • The Little Detecto: His primary function before being trashed was landmine detection and disposal due to his shock-resistant body.
  • Mighty Glacier: The Rolling Turtle, as its name suggests, is fairly strong and maneuverable, but with average speed and boost, and poor acceleration.
  • Mission Control: Subverted, as QQQ races alongside Phoenix.
  • Robot Buddy: To Phoenix.

    # 40 - Phoenix
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8125a37f5344f98364730dde7e3c9878.png
Click here to see his F-Zero machine

A detective from the future, Phoenix has travelled back in time in order to prevent a cataclysmic event caused by an unspecified criminal during the F-Zero competition. He has prepared himself for this mission by practicing his driving skills with a famous pilot from the 20th century and building his own F-Zero machine through his excellent mechanical skills, while also repairing the once abandoned QQQ into his partner and additional support.

His machine, the Rainbow Phoenix is ranked B-B-C, weighs 1080kgs and comes equipped with two RP2001 engines. It was built by Phoenix himself, using future technology, and thus is required to have a limiter so that it won't overshadow all the other vehicles. Phoenix uses it as a police car when not racing.

Characters debuting in F-Zero GX

    # 00 - Deathborn
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7119839fa20e970e757c6df68bab6301.png
"The legendary Grand Prix? Hardly challenging for someone of my talent."
Click here to see his F-Zero machine

The cause of many a problem in the universe, Deathborn is the recent champion of the Underworld's own F-Zero GP. His evil knows no bounds, as the Space Police have connected him to every single missing person case since the Great Accident; he banishes people into the voids of space where they become vagabonds for the rest of their lives. He has also died a few times, but has always managed to bring himself to life by swapping some of his body parts for mechanical ones, effectively becoming immortal. In GX, he's after the Championship Belt for reasons unspoiled.

His machine is the Dark Schneider (aka the "Wings of Darkness"), which has a A-B-D rating, has three DS021P engines, weighs 2080kgs, but has an unknown creator. The cockpit is specially rigged so that if any other pilot tried to use the machine, poisonous needles fire out of the dashboard to kill the intruder. Its main focus is offense and speed so that he can kill anyone he pleases, although its tight grip makes it easier to use than most.

    The Creators (Spoilers

The mysterious ghostly beings that inhabit the complete Championship Belt. They're more or less the equivalent of God in F-Zero's universe, as they claim to have created it as well as Deathborn, their magnum opus. With Captain Falcon having defeated Deathborn, they now seek to acquire his soul in order to create a replacement.

  • Author Avatar: For the creators of the game. The final chapter of Story Mode even calls their car the "Staff Ghost"!
  • The Corrupter: Heavily implied to be this for Deathborn.
  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: There's no reason whatsoever for one to expect their existence, especially since Black Shadow and Deathborn were already filling the necessary Sorting Algorithm of Evil positions from all the way back in the first cutscene.
  • God of Evil: They go far beyond being Jerkass Gods. Even when they claim that "there are no universal forces", their actions and demeanor are a loud exclamation of For the Evulz. They seem to have enough dignity to honor Falcon's victory, but even that act is open to interpretation.
  • The Man Behind the Man: No, really. They're behind everything, so it would seem.
  • Racing Ghost: Both literally and figuratively.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Although it's never quite explained why they're residing in the Ultimate Champion's belt if they created the entire damn world.
  • Walking Spoiler: You had best believe it. The fact that they show up at the very end of the story doesn't help.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: Seeing as Falcon defeated Deathborn, their "best creation," they decide to challenge Falcon. His soul at stake, they'll rip it out of his body and turn him into Deathborn's successor if they win.
