Main characters

    Rain

Richmond 'Rain' Stroudwater

Class: Dynamo/ Engine of Change

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rain_by_aceaximeck.jpg
Rain - portrayed by @Aceaximeck on Twitter
An average guy from Earth who just happened to wake up in a forest one day. Rain has no idea how or why he came to find himself in the world, but is making the best of his situation. His interface appears in the form of blue notification boxes and he has learned to exploit them. He soon chooses the Dynamo class and creates an arua build. He would eventually go on to found Ascension.
  • 24-Hour Armor: Because of his low HP, Rain had taken to always wearing his full plate armor once a set had been crafted. He rarely ever even removed the helmet. Because of purify he doesn't need to remove it to wash or use the bathroom.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Has shades of this. Because of his high clarity and lack of focus he tends to get off track fairly easily. He has to work hard to stay on topic.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: To say that Rain is considered odd would be an understatement. He lacks much common knowledge, frequently makes references no one understands, and chose skills no one would in a world where everyone seems to want to be DPS. However he also possesses skills that people rarely chose, many had never even heard of some of them, and has found creative ways to use them. Then there is his massive mana pool and fast regen. At one point his cooperation becomes necessary for the survival of a city.
  • The Captain: His rank in Ascension is captain, having been thinking about that airship he wanted when deciding what the leader is called.
  • Chain Lightning: Is able to mimic this with Fulmination. While an AOE spell, he can make it look like it is jumping from one target to the next.
  • Cincinnatus: Goes through this more than once.
    • Downplayed the first time with Fel Sanadis. After his escape from the underground, his unintentional pressure & support got the unawakened to follow him and in stabilizing & protecting the weak. Even some of the local nobles supported him.
    • Played a bit more straight the second time. Following the Empire's attack on Three Cliffs and the loss of most of their leadership, Rain temporally takes control of the city, with the remaining pirate king not caring what he does as long as he doesn't disturber him. He then gets to work fixing things and punishing criminal offenses.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Rain has dumped all his stat points into Clarity and picked only aura and metamagic skills. While this gave him access to the rare class Dynamo and powerful AOE spells, he is left with very little in the way of defense and little physical attack power while also rendering him scatterbrained. Prior to getting Aura IFF, his spells would affect allies and enemies alike. This has forced him to rely on high grade enchanted armor and equipment.
  • The Dreaded: As much as he would like to avoid this, Rain has started to become a person to be feared. His Ring Wraith impression likely isn't helping his case.
  • Elemental Powers: As an aura user Rain is largely limited to AOE spells. The first two spells in the offensive aura tree are refrigerate and immolate. He can use this to regulate his body temperature with weak settings. On high setting he can super heat or cool the air, which causes a backlash that effects his body. He eventually starts unlocking other elements as well.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Doesn't want to be called Night Cleaner or Death Zone or what ever new nickname Kettel comes up with. Unfortunately they are catching on.
  • The Exile: Rain is briefly kicked out of Fel Sanadis, for after he learns the language and paid the fine days later, opening casting Purify in front of the public, which makes the Watch target the Guild. Although the only real damage was a noble's bruised ego.
  • Giving Radio to the Romans: Trying to at least. He tells Tallheart, Staavo, Myth & Reason what he knows about metallurgy and chemistry, along with some rudimentary technology. His limited understanding has made this difficult, but they have been able to build steam engines and light bulbs. As of 200 chapters the radio still needs work. He has the sense not to even mention nukes.
  • Goodwith Numbers: Downplayed with Rain, where he uses math to calculate the effectiveness of his skills.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Purify, an elementary aura spell that purify poison, corruption, and contamination, becomes this to Rain, since with his understanding it cleans the body, deletes excrement, removes hangover and makes slimes passive. He calls it "the best spell ever" for a reason.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: A common occurrence once Rain starts wearing full plate armor is that people misjudge his class and build. Since metal interferes with magic most people assume he is some sort of fighter. During a duel he uses a sword and mimics katas, having learned them manually, while secretly using his auras. It becomes apparent at the tail end of the duel when immolate started showing it's effects.
  • I'm Having Soul Pains: After becoming trapped underground following the failed ambush Rain manages to damage his soul, causing it to leak. This can cause the unawaken to freak out around him and sometimes cause him physical pain. He jumps through a few hoops to avoid aggravating his condition.
  • Language Barrier: Rain starts off not knowing anything about the language in his new world and he has to take time & clarity (literally in his case) to understand how to construct sentences.
  • Magic Knight: Pretty much unheard of in the world. Metal interferes with magic, throwing off the aim of spells and consuming some of the mana. Rain's AOE auras are an exception, allowing him to wear full plate armor without inhibiting his spells. This has caused confusion when people try figure out his build from looking at him.
  • Mechanically Unusual Class: Rain is considered weird by Fel Sanadis (or even the world), as he is a mage specializing in auras, but wears armor.
  • Mugging the Monster: A group of looters surround Rain, demanding he give them everything he had, but as soon as he lowered his hood they only wanted to leave. Simply being an awakened is enough to tell them don't want to fight him, certainly not taking on a guy in full plate using improvised weapons, but he could kill them all without lifting a finger.
  • New Life in Another World Bonus: Subverted, but not entirely. Rain wasn't gifted with any special abilities or items, he couldn't even take items from Earth with him beyond his pajamas. However it is theorized in universe that the teleportation that brought him to the World is what attracted the musk wolf that granted him his relatively high starting level cap. It was way outside it's normal hunting grounds and was likely starved for essence, weakening it to the point where the adventurers he came across could kill it.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: Rain, as described by Lady Velika in the awakening expedition, his abilities is impressive for their group (which consists mainly of the unawakened), but pitiful when compared to where she lives.
  • Photographic Memory: Because of his high clarity stat Rain's memory gets better and better until he can recall everything with perfect detail, even from his life on Earth.
  • Red Baron: Rain's reputation has started to spread to cities he hasn't been to yet, calling him Death Zone the Night Cleaner.
  • Regenerating Mana: Rain has this down in spades. His abuse of Winter and Essence Well along with the modifies has allowed him to quickly replenish even his large mana pool.
  • Repressed Memories: Rain had to wall off his memories of accessing the obelisk, simply because the simple memory of doing so causes incredible pain.
  • Semantic Superpower: Purify erases what ever Rain perceives as poison, corruption, or contamination. This can include corpses and even the dirt on clothing while excluding the soil. He can twist his perception to exclud ediable monsters, reconizing them as food. He can also sober someone up by thinking of the alchol in their system as poison. At one point he eraised all the tabaco in range without meaning to, but admits he would have done so on purpose if he had thought about it, given how his parents died.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: People repeatedly mistake Ameliah for being Rain's girlfriend or common law wife and believe they are sleeping together. He has had a lot of trouble discouraging such rumors.
  • Squishy Wizard: As Rain invested solely in clarity he has high magic, but no real defense. This has almost gotten him killed several times.
  • Start My Own: After the fall of Fel Sanadis, Rain chooses to form his own mercenary group/company called Ascension from scratch.
  • Trapped in Another World: Though after some after adapting to the world, Rain decides to stay since there is nothing there for him in his own world.
  • Unflinching Walk: Invoked by Rain during the expedition to the Fells. After using immolate to cause a pack of kin to combust he hides the mage burn he inflicted upon himself and casually walks back to the rest of the group without looking back, just to show off.
  • Unwanted False Faith: Rain was rather worried that Tarny would start a religion or cult in his name. Fortunately he seems to of grown passed his worship of Rain, though he still holds him in high regard.
  • Utility Party Member: A major part of Rain's build is to boost his allies. This includes increased mana regeneration and transfer, elemental warding, and even boosted speed. Purify can be used to clean up the remains of monsters and even personal hygiene while detection can locate almost anything in range.
  • Wrong Assumption: Rain gets this a lot after he equips the Dark Revenant's Armour made by Tallheart. People think he is some sort of lord or high ranking adventurer. He starts playing into this trope after a while, confusing people as to what his class and abilities are.

    Ameliah

Ameliah

Class: Uncertain Saviour

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ameliah_by_aceaximeck.jpg
Ameliah - portrayed by @Aceaximeck on Twitter
A human adventurer of many talents and a silver plate. She was one of the first people to find Rain after he was transported to The World, comparing him to a puppy someone abandoned in the gutter. She has a hard time trusting people or letting herself get attached. Despite her reservations about getting close to people she became a founding member of Ascension.
  • Ambiguously Brown: She has blond hair and tan skin.
  • The Big Girl: One of only two silver plates in Rain's circle of friends. She is by far stronger than him and dishes out the most damage.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Has two cases from her childhood, not counting losing her mother when she was too young to remember.
    • Her father fell into debt to reach silver rank. To try and pay it off he took her to the Brightside, a dangerous place were people go to try and strike it rich. This resulted in his death when she was eight, forcing her to earn a living in a place were all the half decent people leave the first chance they get.
    • Still trapped in Brightside, she fell in love with a freelord named Lerith Singer who had also come seeking easy wealth. He used and manipulated her, even physically altering her body to suit his tastes. This went beyond cosmetic changes, experimenting on her to give her claws, scales, and horns. He even pushed her to take a lesser class rather than waiting for her legendary to unlock. Eventually he abandoned her, taking everything of value and running off.
  • Elemental Powers: As part of her Jack build Ameliah has access to a wide range of spells, be it fireballs or genomancy.
  • The First Cut Is the Deepest: Given how her first love ended, she is very reluctant to start a new relationship, or even keep close friends.
  • Jack of All Stats: To get her Jack build, Ameliah has equally invested her stat points into each of her six stats.
  • Master of None: While Jacks have access to a wide range of skills, they lack specialization and can only get 10 ranks in any given skill, verses the 15 ranks any other legendary class could get in their chosen skill trees.
  • Put on a Bus: She heads out to Jarro shortly after the Everdeep arc to collect information. This results in her missing the DKE occupation of Fel Sanadis. Subverted in that we still occesionally see what she is up to.
  • Skill Point Reset: Uncertain Savoir allows Ameliah to refund her skills, freeing up space for other skills. If she takes a skill back she had discarded before it will be the same rank as when she had it last.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The only female in the Everdeep Fortress party, and prior to the founding of Ascension, largely the only woman in Rain's circle of friends. She is currently the only silver plate female member of Ascension, although there are several bronze.
  • Support Party Member: Has shades of this. She can hold her own in a fight, but she is also capable of healing the injured, using Message, building defenses, and so much more.
  • Woman Scorned: Spend years hunting down her ex. She has yet to find him, but regrets not killing him when she had the chance.

    Tallheart

Tallheart

Class: Runic Powersmith

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tallheart_by_aceaximeck.jpg
Tallheart - portrayed by @Aceaximeck on Twitter
A Cervidian blacksmith who had been living in the woods outside of Fel Sadanis when Rain met him. He had been unwilling to trust humans and has a deep seeded grudge against the Empire of Adamant for the genocide of his people. He becomes a founding member of Ascension. While not able to join the guild his level would put him at silver plate.
  • 24-Hour Armor: Almost never seen without armor, though he rarely used the helmet. Because of his pure strength build he need the armor to protect himself from his own power.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Because Rain had been nice to him and helped him with his shack, Tallheart forges him an efficient heavy armor and stat allocating ring. He eventually forges Jamus a similar stat ring, being his oldest human friend.
  • The Big Guy: Certainly the tallest, having to duck his head when entering through doors. He is also silver level and can chuck boulders with relative ease.
  • The Blacksmith: Tallheart's class is a runic powersmith. He is able to produce high quality armor and weapons.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Dumped most of his stat points into Strength. While this does make him strong enough to chuck boulders like stones and forge metalwork with ease, he is at risk of hurting himself if he isn't wearing his armor. His worker class also prevents him from gaining EXP from killing monsters.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Goes beyond being hunted by the empire. After his home village was destroyed he and his wife made it their mission to save their people and take revenge on the Empire. To do so they needed power. Eventually they got careless during a delve and bit off more than they could chew. This resulted in them coming across a dragon who killed her.
  • The Dreaded: He and Snowlilly were this in the past. He had earned the name Vileheart from when they tore through backwater areas of The Empire trying to save their people. To be fair the Empire had it coming.
  • The Engineer: Steadily started becoming this. While he always had in-depth knowledge of metalwork, thanks to Rain he has started developing an understanding of engineering. Over time he developed generators, the forgedwagon, and even steam engines.
  • Former Bigot: Understandably doesn't like humans, having been a victim of Fantastic Racism himself. It took a long time before he was willing to trust any humans and see they weren't all like the Empire.
  • The Gadfly: Somehow combines this with The Stoic. While he seems to remain serious, he often teases Rain by sneaking up behind him, claiming he wasn't paying attention, but it seems he used some sort of stealth ability or enchantment to do so. To be fair this started with Rain training with skills that cause sensory deprivation. When mistaken for Rain's lover, he encourages the misunderstanding, getting fed lines by Ameliah.
  • Glass Cannon: Putting most of his stat points into Strength but few if any into Endurance has given him superhuman levels of strength, but unable to fight without his armor as he runs the risk of seriously hurting himself if he moves around to much.
  • The Lost Lenore: Snowlilly's death still haunts him and her memory shapes his actions.
  • Magitek: Combines his existing knowledge of enchantments with the technologies Rain has been teaching him. An example is the muffler, which uses silent runes to muffle the sound of the forgewagon's engine.
  • Price on Their Head: Or rather price on his antlers. The Empire has placed a bounty on Cervidian antlers and Tallheart himself has earned a reputation as a threat in the Empire.
  • Survivor Guilt: Has shades of this. His wife Snowlilly died protecting him from a dragon. Her death still weighs heavily on him to this day.
  • Steampunk: Rain got him into this when developing the forgewagon, getting him a pair of copper goggles, which given the lack of a windshield, is likely handy. He was unable to find an appropriate hat to match.
  • Token Nonhuman: The only Cervidian in Ascension or outside of flashbacks for that matter. Due to a lack of other fantasy races, he is also the only non-human other than the animals or pet monsters. No longer strictly true after the events of chapter 219, where the Cervidian village is forced to evacuate to Ascension's camp. However, their status within the group isn't clear and their general mistrust of humans remains.
  • Weapons of Their Trade: While he doesn't consider himself a fighter, he uses his trusty smith hammer when he goes into battle, if he doesn't just crush them with his bare hands.

Ascension

     Ascension as a whole
Ascension is a company of like-minded people aiming to better themselves and the world. They are made up of awakened and non-awakened individuals. They have a screening process for membership, which includes among other things the "asshole test", intended to weed out bigots, xenophobes, and supremacists of any kind. Their founder and current captain is Rain. Its ranks are divided into three tiers: Entrusted, Trusted, and Aspirants, based on the level of trust rather than level. Several of their members are also members of the Guild, some joining later.
  • Code of Honour: They have an evolving code of conduct, which can be voted on when time allows.
  • Cool Boat: The Temerity is Ascension's only ship and main base once they salvage the Fist of Progress from the bottom of the bay. It is large enough to hold 1,000 people.
  • Cool Plane: The Inconceivable is a VTOL aircraft powered by a miniature fusion reactor giving it effectively unlimited range. Unfortunately, it hit a bird during a test flight and crashed.
  • Heroes "R" Us: As part of their mission objective, they help build each other up while fighting evil wherever they find it. However they are rather new to it.
  • The Order: What Rain is hoping to build with it.
  • We Help the Helpless: One of the main ideas behind Rain founding it.

    Vanna

Vanna

Formerly a worker from Fel Sadanis who later went on to become a founding member of Ascension, becoming it's second in command and obtaining the rank of commander once it was established. She becomes awaken not long after it's founding.
  • Number Two: Rain appointed her quartermaster of Ascension. This was later changed to commander, as the title was more fitting. She takes command when Rain is off on missions and handles much of the day to day. Even before Ascension Rain has counted on her to handle the details and paperwork while he does the hard stuff.
  • Utility Party Member: After awakening she gains the ability to buff allies with resistance to different elements.

     Jamus

Jamus

Jamus is a Mage originally from Vestvall. He wears bright orange clothes which have become his fashion. He is in his early 40s. He is one of Rain's first friends after he came to Fel Sadanis, enjoying the effects of Winter to boost his mana regen. He is a bronze plate adventurer and founding member of Ascension.
  • Cuckold: His first wife had been cheating on him long enough that it is questionable if any of his children are really his.
  • December–December Romance: Finally starts a relationship with his neighbor Meloni, both being a bit past their prime.
  • Doesn't Know Their Own Child: Leaves town after discovering his wife cheated on him, leaving the children behind. When he eventually returns he worries how much they will remember him. While Ben would at least remember him, his youngest was a baby at the time and they don't know anything about each other.
  • Mama's Baby, Papa's Maybe: Thanks to his first wife's infidelity, the father of his children is questionable since they lack a Daddy DNA Test. However Rain pointed out that his oldest, Ben, does look a lot like him.
  • Taking the Kids: An odd case. All of the kids end up leaving his first wife in favor of Jamus and joining Ascension. This includes her-step son from her second marriage, even though he has little to no connection to him.
  • Shock and Awe: Lightning is his main form attack, using Arcane Bolt, Lightning Whip, and Lightning Ball.

     Carten

Carten

A bronze plate defender who has chosen to duel wield shields. Like Jamus he was contacted by Lavarro to go on quests with her and Mahria, which is how Rain met him. While he didn't bond as quickly as with Jamus he had grown to like Rain and calls him little mouse.
  • Aggressive Submissive: Carton can be a bit battle happy, but he likes being tied up in the bedroom.
  • Amazon Chaser: Has shown interest in Lavarro, Ameliah, and Velika, all of whom are silver plates while he is still low bronze. More recently he has started dating Evonna, who while unawaken when they met, chose to become a defender like him. He started training her after her awakening and they became a couple by the time they reached the next city.
  • The Big Guy: He is a big and muscular. While he specializes in defense, he is still strong enough to wrestle a bear. He even took off his armor to make it a fair fight.
  • Casual Kink: Told Lady Velika he loved her after she broke out the ropes and chains.
  • Dumb Muscle: Subverted, though he still has shades of it. While he seems like an idiot at times he had actually put a lot of time and research into his build before he awakened. He chose to become a defender because all the bests parties have them but they are also hard to come by and looked into what skills they benefit from.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Made the odd choice of duel wielding shields.
  • Power Dynamics Kink: Seem to have a thing for women who can bend him over their knee.
  • Shield Bash: Pretty much his only weapon.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Carten doesn't like snakes or things that look and act like snakes, such as the case of the crawler vine, even if it is already dead. He will still fight one if he really has to. It has more to do with the way they move, which he doesn't feel is natural.

     Mahria

Mahria

Mahria is the daughter of Lavarro and Halgrave. Rain first meets her when tagging along with Jamus on a quest her mother was leading. She has a bad habit of using her magic inappropriately. While having silver and gold parents, she was classless when Rain first meets her.
  • Ambiguously Gay: She had gotten rather close to Lyn Aleuas Draves, holding hands when he father showed up and refused to leave her. It isn't clear if there is any deeper meaning behind it at this point.
  • An Ice Person: She specializes in ice magic. She has been holding back her class selection in hopes of unlocking a secret mage class. This resulted in her being stronger than the typical level 5, but also effectively stuck with a low level cap until she could figure it out, which she eventually did.
  • Broken Pedestal: Mahria towards her mother Lavarro after Lavarro (mind controlled by a Watch leader) reveals that she's a murderer.

     Val

Val

Val is an Ossaran man with dark skin and long straight black hair tied back in a ponytail. About Rain's age, he is impulsive, hot-headed, and loves to fight. While he was born with in the borders of the Empire he doesn't consider himself from there, being an oppressed minority. He is a bronze plate adventurer and founding member of Ascension.
  • Absurdly Low Level Cap: Got hit with this worse than most. His cap was so low he wasn't even able to chose a class and spend years trying to find a blue so he could raise it. In one day Rain was able to raise three levels, which was more than Val had been able to do in his whole life up to that point. Despite their friendship, Rain's lucky blue is a source of envy for Val.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father was taken away by the Empire.
  • I Owe You My Life: Val has a tendency to nearly get himself killed. Rain has saved him on more than one occasion, earning him his loyalty.
  • Invisibility: Gains this ability after killing a blue in Everdeep Fortress. It certainly needs some work.
  • Light 'em Up: Val's specialty is light magic. Skills he had when they first meet him include Lunar Orb, Solar Ray, and Hard Light.
  • Person as Verb: While Val is a competent fighter and duelist, he has a history of doing something reckless or punching above his weight. This has resulted in him almost dying more times than Rain has. As such "Pulling a Val" came to mean doing something reckless.
  • Scars Are Forever: While trying to help fight the Razorspine Dissolver may of helped save lives, it left him with facial acid-scars. Even with healing magic it seems to late to get rid of them.
  • See the Invisible: Runs into this problem after he gains the ability to turn invisible.
  • That Man Is Dead: Not Val himself but after discovering that Lightbreaker is his father he insists that his father, that is to say the man who raised him, is dead, even if his body is still moving around.
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: Among Val's rather limited selection of starting skills is Lunar Orb, a simple glowing ball that can illuminate a small area and is comparable to a torch. Even he doesn't seem to think much of it. However it is necessary for his build, a prerequisite for a hidden class. Still they are able to make use of it in the darkness aspect lair they tackle soon after meeting him.

    Staavo

Staavo

Staavo is a retired adventurer and scholar, originally from Sadiir. He had started off as a swordsmen, but after losing a foot he tried switching to a magic class. This didn't mix well. He is one of the few people who can compete with Rain when it comes to asking questions, becoming fascinated with his world. He comes along with him as a founding member of Ascension.
  • An Arm And Aleg: Staavo lost a foot early in his career and had a wooden prosthetic made to replace it.
  • Artificial Limbs: While he started off with his wooden foot, Tallheart eventually makes him a mundane spring-steel prosthesis, which makes him mobile again.
  • The Engineer: He and Tallheart start developing generators, light bubs, and steam engines together. After one conversation with Rain he was able to build a primitive hand crank generator, ironically while trying to prove such a thing was impossible.
  • Insufferable Genius: Has shades of this. Staavo has made a hobby of disproving theories so he can rub it in their face. However when his own experiment proves him wrong he is quick to accept the outcome.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: He and Tallheart frequently bicker with each other, but they are still able to work together developing the different technologies Rain told them about.
  • Science Wizard: He tried switch to a magic build after losing a foot. He has since retired as an adventurer and became a scholar. After Rain entered the picture he started trying to learn all her could about science, helping to develop light bulbs and the rest of Ascension's tech.
  • Skeptic No Longer: Doesn't believe Rain about fake lightning (electricity), cat snakes (ferrets), or dead lizards (dinosaurs) turning into oil, Rain clarifying that last one was a joke. He soon is able to construct a prototype generator based on Rain's description and eventually encounters a monster resembling a ferret. After proving what he attempted to disprove, he goes on to develop more and more advanced generators.

    Myth & Reason

Myth & Reason

Myth & Reason are a pair of bronze-class awakened workers, and alchemist and a chemist respectively. They were doing business in Fel Sadanis on a high level of style and mystique. They insist on sticking with this bit even though it isn't doing them any favors. Meloni is left to run the actual shop.
  • Alchemy Is Magic: While anyone can preform chemistry if they know how, only the awaken can preform alchemy.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Meloni is certain that Myth & Reason aren't their real names and had taken to calling them Bip & Bop until they tell her their real names.
  • Magic Potion: One of their main products are magic potions. While they have them for health, stamina, and magic, they can create others, such as water breathing.
  • Transparent Closet: They appear to be a closeted gay couple, keeping things under wraps due to the discrimination they had faced over it in other lands. Still several characters have already figured it out and mostly don't seem to care.
  • Utility Party Member: Unlike Tallheart or Staavo, they have shown no combat ability. They are perfectly happy working in their lab producing potions and coating for the electrical wires.

    Mlemlek & Ava

Mlemlek Ko-Latti

Mlemlak was an awaken traveling merchant. He would go from town to town with his daughter Ave, who he is training to be a merchant. They first met Rain after his trip into the sewers slime hunting and sold him his first set of clothes after coming to the World. Typically goes by Mlem.
  • Badass and Child Duo: A downplayed example. Mlem is typically cheerful, but he can certainly hold his own in a fight.
  • Honesty Is the Best Policy: Rule 73. Don’t lie to the Watch, there’s no point.
  • Intrepid Merchant: Travels all over and has somehow gotten a good supply off coffee, something not found in this part of the world.
  • Teleportation Misfire: Happened when he tried to teleport out of a barrier, only to get bounced to a puddle of water.

Ava Lek-Ani

Mlemlak's seven year old daughter. Like her father, she is capped at level 7 and often shows why nobles typically wait until their children are a bit older before awakening them.
  • Adorably Precocious Child: She can be sweet when she wants to be and uses that to advertise her father's stand.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Downplayed, but has shades of it. When she got annoyed with her father she started advertising mana charging, which he technically told her to do, but had done so in front of a Watch officer, showing that they were awakened. She might have done so to get back at him. She also keeps calling Rain "Rag Man" thanks to him being dressed in his torn pajamas when they first met.
  • Cheerful Child: She is frequently this.
  • Playing with Fire: Quite literally. Sometimes she will set herself on fire and run around for the fun of it.
  • The Rival: Kettel, a guy over twice her age, views her as this after he awakens and picks fire magic. Ava has much better control over it than him. Granted she has been doing it longer.
  • Teleport Spam: Did this for fun with Mlem's skipping stone, draining its charges which takes several days for him to recover.
  • Wreathed in Flames: Does this for the fun of it.

    Kettel

Kettel

The first born of a poor commoner family. He originally held a serious disdain for awakened, viewing them has privileged adventuring bastards prior to meeting Rain. He is known to take risks but knows what works for unawaken. Like many of Rain's friends he goes on to become a founding member of Ascension.
  • Casanova Wannabe: Hits on both Breggeh and Rina during the awakening expedition. The former was already married and the latter wouldn't give him the time of day. Later he hits on Mahria who pointedly turns him down.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: Has cherry red hair and uses fire magic. Granted his hair was naturally brown, he simply dyes it. Rain calls it a phase.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: For the most part he tends to act first. He was banned from helping during the shift because he was too reckless.
  • Playing with Fire: Originally he fought with a staff, but after awakening moved onto fire magic. He has been known to toy with it.
  • The Rival: Views other fire mages as this, even a seven year old girl.
  • Stock Shōnen Hero: Seems to be trying to build himself around this trope, even giving himself spiky red hair. He has some awareness of Sun Wukong.
Joined after chapter 180. Unmarked Spoilers

Fechton Stone/Shu

Formally the First Starguide on the Fist of Progress, later becoming the navigator when it was salvaged and renamed Temerity by Ascension. He speaks with a curious vocabulary as a result of the Empire's propaganda. He takes the name Shu after coming to Rain seeking asylum.
  • Broken Pedestal: Becomes disillusioned with the Empire and starts to question it's propaganda after the indestructible ship he was on was cut in two.
  • Insistent Terminology: He is a starguide, not a navigator. Exactly what is a starguide is not fully explained, but seems to be similar to a professional navigating officer of Enlightenment Era on Earth, while a navigator relies solely on maps. However due to starguides being something only found in the Empire, his official job on the Temerity is navigator.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Was unaware that the Fist of Progress was on a mission of war until they reached Three Cliffs. It seems they never told him anything that wasn't necessary to do his job.
  • Mook–Face Turn: All of his crew mates dead, cut off from the Empire, disillusioned with their teachings, and trapped in a city where everyone wants him dead, Fechton is forced to seek asylum with Ascension.
  • Sole Survivor: Appears to be the only member of the Fist of Progress onboard when it was sliced in two to of survived. If anyone else survived he hasn't seen them.
  • This Cannot Be!: Had an off screen version of this when he suddenly found himself high in the air above the two halves of the indestructible ship he was on.

Officer Sana

A young Watch officer assigned to a small outpost in Barstone in the DKE. She is very gifted in reading. Following instructions from Warden Vatreece, she becomes the first full fledged member of the Watch to join Ascension and begins instructing Rain on reading.
  • Absurdly Low Level Cap: Due to a really unlucky awakening she gets stuck at level 2. This left her with only three skills and no class. It is unknown what her build is meant to be, but one of her skills is arcane bolt.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: A self inflicted version. Using the memory cube, she would unseal her memories for training, sealing them again when finished for the day. This allowed her to learn how to read a person's soul without understanding how she is able to do it. Eventually, Warden Vatreece unlocks these sealed memories.
  • Living Lie Detector: While this is true of most members of the Watch, Sana is particularly gifted at reading.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: Gets posted to Barstone in the DKE after beating too many Sentinels at nine dice. The Watch there consists of a small building and only two other officers who struggle to get more manpower. This appears to be a dead end post with little chance for advancement.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Only level 2, but she is able to out perform even silver plate Sentinels at reading. She also has fine control over arcane bolt.

Niri

An Agent of the Bank sent by Luna to infiltrate Ascension's ranks. She forms a friendship with Velika while in the cafeteria and is in debt to the bank. Rain hopes to turn her to their side.
  • Easily Forgiven: Rain and Val don't hold her attemps at spying on Ascension against her, only taking away her Speaking Stone and letting her remain in their ranks.
  • Fake Static: When the conversation with Luna over the Speaking Stone starts getting on her nerves, she fakes extra static to wrap it up and eventually goes KSSSSSS to end the call. Val approves.
  • Feed the Mole: Her cover is blown on day one but they let her think otherwise. After she reports false information on their destination Val takes away her speaking stone.
  • Interclass Friendship: Downplayed. Velika was a wealthy noble but by the time they met, she lost everything, bounding over breakfast. Rain says she should come clean about being a spy herself before Velika finds out from someone else.
  • The Mole: She is a bank spy but her cover was blown on day one.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: She befriends Velika by chance, apparently not realizing who she was at first, but lets Luna think it was part of her plan.
  • Weak, but Skilled: She is able to trick even higher level Watch officers. Unfortunately, Sana is better.
  • Willfully Weak: She is level 13 but poses as a level 3. Samson could tell she was holding back.

Bluewash

A coresmith from West Nov and the aunt of the Prince of Sa, likely the King's sister. She was in debt to her cousin after her last shop blew up and she was apparently banished to the slums. It didn't take much for her to join Ascension. She is low silver with a high clarity build.-
  • Color-Coded Patrician: The blue scarf she covers her face with indicates she is a royal of some sort, later admitting to being the Prince's aunt.
  • Didnt Thinkthis Through: She kidnaps herself, stuffing herself into the back of a cart of people she knows next to nothing about. Aside from having no idea where she was going, other than it couldn't be worse than where she was now, she didn't think how unpleasant being trapped in such a small compartment would be. She even lampshades it after getting pins and needles. note
  • Ditzy Genius: She has a high clarity build and is very skilled when it comes to cores, but she seems to have trouble taking care of herself and sometimes says to much.
  • Bluff the Eavesdropper: When Tristin's group starts asking too many questions about cores she tells them to get out of her shop... while lifting herself into the back of their cart and stuffing herself into a compartment. The Academy sometimes checks up on her but are unable to see inside buildings through magical means.
  • Modest Royalty: She is apparently the King's sister, but lives in the slums and her blue scarf is her only indication of royal status.
  • Noodle Incident: Her old shop blew up. She said it wasn't her fault. That said her second shop looks like something out of Hoarders.
  • Saying Too Much: She has this issue, explaining what she was doing when fixing the journey core, only to realize she was starting to give away trade secrets.
  • Vehicular Kidnapping: Downplayed as she stuffs herself into the back of a journey cart, effectively kidnapping herself without any idea of where she was going beyond out of the country.
     Tropes applying to other Members
  • Achievements in Ignorance: Being a slime, Dozer has no idea what he's doing, but was somehow able to hack the System to allow him to revive even though Rain lacks the necessary tamer skill for it. Then he was able to do it again, inventing several new monster evolutions for never before seen slimes, turning into a monster that can reproduce, something that normally can't happen.
  • Acid Attack: Taron (Ron) is an Acid Mage.
  • Animorphism: Finnbogi can transform into monsters, eventually turning into a Fatbird.
  • Ascended Fan Boy: Tarny practically worshiped Rain to the point where the latter feared he would start a cult in his name. He was able to awaken after joining Ascension and became an aura specialist like him.
  • The Beastmaster: Ujesh is a tamer with a female Fatbird named Dumpling.
  • The Blacksmith: Ellis is Tallheart's (unofficial) apprentice. Eventually he starts teaching him for real.
  • Blob Monster: Ascension has a number of Crystal Slimes in toe. A notable one is Dozer, Rain's pet who is a lot smarter than a typical slime.
  • Blow You Away: Emerton Sale is an Aeromancer who uses an aluminum wingsuit to fly.
  • Devious Daggers: Telen likes to outfit himself with as many daggers as he can carry. Vanna chewed him out about not filing the proper paper work and using to many. She limits him to four until he can get Tallheart to make him a personal set.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Corrin is a Geomancer and helps with construction.
  • Healing Hands: Tahir and Mereck become healers. Rain prioritized the skill, allowing them to awaken early into Ascension's journey.
  • Horse Archer: After Stint hurt his leg he would typically ride on Dust's back to get around while hunting monsters with his bow. It likely helped that Dust was smarter than the average horse.
  • Making a Splash: Clubbs is a Hydromancer and works with Corrin in construction.
  • Runic Magic: Romer is the Runescribe. He is able to inscribe magic into items and makes the wards Ascension uses.
  • Support Party Member: Tarny becomes a Logistics Beacon, taking all four seasons from the utility aura tree, which boosts regen of those in range. He has no known offensive skills.
  • Telepathy: Nails becomes a Mentalist and takes Message, which sends a one way telepathic message.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Finnbogi is Arcane Shapeshifter, but doesn't like being a Crystal Slime due to the lack of traditional sensory organs and replaces the pattern with a Fatbird when he gets the chance.

Adventurer's Guild

    As a whole
The Adventurer's Guild handles problems that are either too trivial or too hard for others to handle. The main branch is Xiugaaraa where everyone speaks Zeelada, but everyone calls it the "City of Lights". The current guild leader is Burrik “The Volcano”, a gold plate fire mage.

While neutral in global politics they will protect the freedoms of adventurers. However in areas controlled by the Watch they tread carefully and self police and. Similar practices seem to be done in the DKE. They have no branches in Empire of Adamant and likely have none in Rellagia due to the respective policies regarding the awakened there.

They rank their adventurers with metal plates based on their levels. Bronze plates are under level 25, silver are 25-49, gold are 50-74, and platinum are over 75. However they haven't had any platinum plates in centuries.

    Burrik

Burrik the Volcano

A gold plate fire mage and current leader of the Guild. He was formally the leader of the Rousers before the team fell apart, which included Halgrave's late father.
  • Older Than They Look: He is 140 years old, but looks half that.
  • Playing with Fire: Well they don't call him The Volcano for nothing.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Sympathizes with Halgrave's plight, but politics ties his hands.
  • Retired Badass: He was the former leader of the Rousers, a highly accomplished adventurer team during it's time, and is currently the highest level member of the Guild and forth strongest person in the world, ranking behind only the platinum class awaken. He has long since retired from the front lines and spends his days in Xiugaaraa, running the Guild as a whole.

    Halgrave

Halgrave the Golem

The leader of the Fel Sadanis Guild and a gold plate warrior. He is also the ex-husband of Lavarro and loving father of Mahria.
  • The Chains of Commanding: Would rather be out fighting monsters, but is stuck in a desk job.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: Injures Rain, almost breaking his leg when he kicks him out of the guild after the Watch complains about his public use of magic. Later he explains he sometimes forgets how fragile people are, but doesn't quite apologize for it.
  • Humongous-Headed Hammer: Carries a massive hammer into battle. It is only possible for him to even lift the thing thanks to his Super-Strength and skills.
  • Made of Iron: A literal example. He is able to fuse with his armor, turning himself into metal. He has proven he has the ability to tank a lot of damage.
  • Noodle Incident: His and Lavarro's divorce was apparently pretty epic that they could have sold tickets. That said an all out fight between them could destroy the city.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Doesn't come off this way at first, kicking Rain out for petty reasons. He welcomes him back a few days later when he is able to pay off the fine, explains the gravity of the situation and warns him he better not see him in his office again. Rain does end up there again after Lavarro knocks him out.
  • Red Baron: He is known as The Golem and simply hearing he is in town is enough to worry people.
  • Super Mode: His Living Armour transformation could be counted as this.
  • Working with the Ex: Technically is his ex-wife's boss. He doesn't like dealing with her crap, but he is stuck with her.

    Lavarro

Lavarro

A silver ranked force mage. She is Halgrave's ex-wife and mother of Mahria. She has been taking quests below her station and hiring bronze adventurers as party members to train her daughter. Rain first met her when he wanted to tag along on a quest Jamus was taking with the group.
  • Amnesiacs are Innocent: After what ever happened with Warden Vatreece, she loses her memory and starts wondering around. She behaves like a young child, fasinated with everything she comes across.
  • Grand Theft Me: Becomes the victim of this when Warden Vatreece accesses her mind, leaving a copy of her personality to control her.
  • Ice Queen: Lavarro has a very serious no nonsense demeanor, and is dismissive towards anyone who is of no use for her.
  • Mama Bear: Stay the depths away from Mahria.
  • Pet the Dog: While she originally stated Rain could tag along for free and refused to give him a share of the tel he collected from the monster remains, she gives up her share anyway after he was banished from the guild. However Jamus suggests this was likely done more to spite her ex-husband than anything else.
  • Roaring Rampage of Rescue: Attempts this when Citizen Westbridge traps Mahria in a barrier, but it boarders on Nice Job Breaking It, Hero.

    Argle Thrast

Argle Thrast

Thrast is a silver plate and was the strongest Guilder in Three Cliffs. He is a fighter type, having several swordsmen skills, and very boastful.
  • Bald Head of Toughness: He is bald and very durable, able to withstand the heat that destroys his clothes and armor, seemingly unfazed by his glowing red chain mail. That said he wasn't bald before he was set on fire.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Tallheart yeets him off a cliff and into the ocean for being impolite.
  • Fan Disservice: His clothes burn to a crisp and what's left of his armor falls off during his duel, leaving him in only his chain mail. Rain regrets glancing at him when he bends over to pick up the remains of his armor.
  • Graceful Loser: Accepts his defeat pretty well, only demanding Rain buy him a drink.
  • Helmets Are Hardly Heroic: Wears full armor but doesn't wear a helmet.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: One of the few silver plates in Three Cliffs. The rest of the guild seems to be made up of bronze plates, making him the strongest by default. More so after most of the pirate lords died or fled. Other cities are shown to have several silver plates guilders.
  • Pride: He was the strongest guilder in Three Cliffs when we meet him and he knows it. With the exception of a man who no longer leaves his estate, he was the strongest awaken in Three Cliffs after the Empire attacked the city, causing most of the pirate lords to die or flee. This allowed him to have the run of the place.
  • Pride Before a Fall: A rather boastful man when we first meet him. When Rain wanted to ask him a question he assumed he wanted him to train him. Soon after he challenged Rain to a fight, not letting him back out of it. He fails to understand what he is up against and gets his armor destroyed and his hair burned off. Later he is thrown off a cliff into the ocean. He starts to reflect on his actions a bit after that. However he is still a pain in the ass.

    The Crimson Swords Unmarked Spoilers

Hegar, Anton, and Brovose

A trio of bronze-class adventurers, likely over level 18 but below 25. They were traveling with Ameliah when they came across Rain in the woods, becoming suspicious because of his garb and inability to speak the local language. They were the ones to kill the Musk Wolf that gave him his level 18 cap. Hegar is the group leader and wields a rapier. Anton is the archer and shadiest of the trio. Brovose is the lazy mage who at least does something to shield the locals from Hegar's short temper.

It is eventually revealed that are plate hunters, serial killers who target people for their accolades. Between the three of them they had racked up quite a collection and made them a silver level threat. When they operated out of Vestvall they took the names Crimson Gar, Skinner and Sleepy/Sleeper respectively, collectively calling themselves the Crimson Swords.

  • Ambiguous Situation: Hegar started a physical relationship with the laundry girl Lana, buying her off with nice dresses and pretty little gifts. It is unclear if he would have accepted her rejection and she was afraid to test that. She was partially scared of Anton coming after her. Ultimately while he didn't like it, Lana's failure to return after he sent her to spy on Ascension wasn't one of his his concern at the time, treating her as an afterthought only after Rain brought her up.
  • Create Your Own Hero: Subverted, if only slightly. They hadn't done anything to Rain that he holds a grudge for, but they did awaken him and their later actions caused them to come into conflict. While Rain failed to stop them he was the reason why they encountered Tallheart.
  • Death by Irony: They are serial killers who saved a life by chance. Months later the man they saved brings a larger origination to their hunting grounds and ultimately kill them.
  • Dirty Coward: Anton has a history of killing high level adventurers in their sleep or shooting them in the back to steal their accolades. He also wanted to kill Tallheart for the bounty on his antlers, but quickly fled minutes into their fight. To be fair Tallheart had just deflected his strongest attack like it was nothing.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: Hegar being the melee fighter, Brovose the mage, and Anton filling the role of thief.
  • Flash Step: One of Anton's skills is Quick Step, allowing him to quickly move from one location to the next with in range. Has a one second cool down and consumes stamina.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Finding Rain when they did and killing the Musk Wolf saved him and gave him power. Rain eventually went on to save countless people and was ultimately responsible for their deaths.
  • Pet the Dog: Bravose put a protective shield on the innkeeper just before Hager lashed out at him. Well before that he protected Rain when he unwittingly caused a slime to explode in his face, not realizing how combustible they are.
  • See the Invisible: Brovose could see Val spying on thanks to Mana Sight, but paid him no mind, even waving at him.
  • The Sociopath: Anton makes Hegar seem like a halfway decent person. While he doesn't go around shooting people in the streets randomly he seems to have the largest body count of the trio. Hegar and Brovose rein in his worse tenancies, but it seems he goes behind their backs to kill people.

The Watch

    As a whole

Vigilant Order of Watch Keepers

Typically just called The Watch for short, they are a most powerful organizations. They are dedicated to protecting the people from themselves, namely protecting the unawaken from the awaken. They share a common origin with the Guild and have the same ranking system, but also have wooden plates for unawaken members. They are far more militaristic than the Guild and their officers take pre set builds they have been using for centuries. While they have cities they fully control like Fel Sadanis, they also operate out of other countries like the DKE but don't have the highest authority there.

Their headquarters is located on the remote island of Vigilance. Only members of the Watch are permitted to go there. It is also home to Warden Vatreece, the leader of the Watch who rarely leaves the island. They are divided into wooden plate prospects (unawaken), brozen plate officers (level 1-24), silver plate sentinels (level 25-49, gold plate Guardians (level 50+), and the Warden. There are also steel plate Custodians, who are outsiders the Watch considers worthy of trust.

  • City Guards: Effectively a global version of this, focusing on maintaining order against some awakened that might cause harm to the world.
  • Good Is Not Nice: While they are a peacekeeping organization, they can come off as rather abrasive, especially to adventurers.
  • Island Base: The Watch's QH is an island only they are allowed on. It is used to protect their secrets and crafters.
  • Knight Templar: A downplayed example, but still has elements of it. It is their official policy is to view all awaken other than their own as a potential threat, caring more about the potential damage they could cause than if they would act on it at all. This has caused some friction between the Watch and members of the Guild. However they still outsource work to the Guild that is ether too much trouble or too tedious for them. There are also those who have gotten on good terms with individual adventurers.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: The officers can't remember how they learned Reading, the ability to see souls. The Memory Cube unseals their memories during training and seals it again while done for the day.
  • Living Lie Detector: Reading is a standard ability of awakened members of the Watch, allowing them to tell when people are lying to them. This isn't a power found in any skill tree, but an ability they can learn independently, regardless of their class. Exactly how this worlds is a well kept secret, with even the Watch officers unable to remember how it works.
  • The Order: Its right there in the name.
    Warden Vatreece

Warden Vatreece

Warden Vatreece is the current leader of the Watch and one of only three platinum in the world. She is the greatest known Mentalist ever since the fall of the Majistraal and has access to all the tools the Watch has at their disposal. While she can read any person's mind she has her own set of principles she sticks to and doesn't want to tarnish the reputation of the Warden.
  • Beware the Mind Reader: Rain certainly thinks so, even without meeting her. He fears what she or any other mind reader might do if they read his memories of another world. He is partially afraid of what they might do if they learned about nukes. This had gone to the point where he wanted a Magneto helmet, but Tallheart couldn't produce one strong enough for the job.
  • Brainwashing for the Greater Good: Takes control of Lavarro's mind following her attack on Westbridge that leveled half the city. After making her control of her permanent she has her harasses the Empire's supply lines.
    • Does it again when she takes control of all the DKE Citizens, using them to help her fight Potentate Fecht.
  • Cool Old Lady: Vatreece is over a century old and has a certain sense of humor.
  • Dirty Mind-Reading: Vatreece doesn't care about your weird sex secrets, but people are still squeamish about that.
  • Forgot About His Powers: Can invoke this trope in others, rendering them unable to remember how to use combat skills.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Vatreece has rules she follows and avoids direct conflict with Potentate Fecht after their last fight threatened to shatter reality. However Fecht's recent actions have pushed things to far and she was forced to break her personal code of honor and attack him with full force.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: When Rain asked Officer Bartum about how the lie detection works, he told him not only is he not allowed to share that information, but he literally can't remember how it works. This is likely Vatreece's doing.
  • Noodle Incident: Once got into a fight with Potentate Fecht to a standstill. It took reality two years to heal from it.
  • Pet the Dog: Tells Mahria the correct combination of skills to unlock the hidden class she was after before she destroys her relationship with her mother Labarro.
  • Older Than They Look: While she does look elderly, she has already lived far beyond a normal span of human years.
  • Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: Barely averted. Trying to read Rain's memories nearly overwhelmed her, causing her to collapse for a moment, simply due to the sheer volume of information. The experience may have affected her mannerisms. At the very least she started using sayings and terms she wouldn't have before.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: By her own estimation she will be dead with in a year. She claims Fecht doesn't have much time ether.
    Guardian Nem
A high ranking Watch officer and the one most likely to succeed Vatreece as Warden when she dies. His class isn't stated yet, but he is likely a mentalist like her.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Stabs his students when teaching them reading, an ability not found in the skill trees. Subverted a bit when he apologizes for it after they finish their training, not that anyone can remember what he is apologizing for.
  • The Ghost: Mentioned by both Vatreece and Sana, but has yet to appear in person.
  • Soul Power: Has excellent control over the domain of his soul, tasked with teaching others how to read them.
    Sentinel Lamida
A silver plate Watch officer stationed at Fel Sadanis. She was on standby when they confirmed Rain's threat level and was the Sentinel he typically had dealings with.
     Officer Melka Unmarked Spoilers

Officer Melka

A low ranking Officer in Fel Sadanis and prefers to be called Mel. She was an orphan taken in by the Watch, but doesn't fully share their views on Adventurers. It didn't take her long to form a friendship with Rain after being assigned as his protector and watch dog.
  • And I Must Scream: During the DKE takeover, Mel remembers her head getting off by the usurper, and then spend some time seeing her headless body before having it attached again.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Assigned to be Rain's protector, a man over twice her level and better equipped who can kill without lifting a finger. To be fair, she likely has more combat experience.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Subverted. It actually takes a rather large amount of alcohol to get drunk, but she still manages to drink enough to do so.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: She is assigned to keep an eye on the scatterbrain Rain and keep him out of trouble.
  • Devious Daggers: Duel wields a pair of enchanted daggers.
  • Drinking on Duty: Rather than literally chasing Rain around the city while he is doing his heat sink, she goes to a tavern and gets drunk until he comes to find her.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Starts drinking a lot due to her PTSD from getting decapitated.
  • I'll Take Two Beers Too: Orders two beers after Rain sits down at her table. Turns out both were for her.
  • Friend on the Force: A downplayed example. Rain doesn't typically turn to Mal for help in mitigating the effects of the current crisis, but she did provide him what she knew about the Fells lair once it became something he needed to know, something the Watch normally keeps classified.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: How Citizen Sadanis kills her the second time.
  • Killed Off for Real: The second time Citizen Sadanis kills her she stays dead.
  • Mundane Utility: Despite the Watch's stance on adventurers using magic in the city, she casually asks Rain to use purify on her for simple hygiene.
  • Off with His Head!: She was unfortunate enough to be at the teleportation platform when the DKE invaded and was decapitated before she realized what was going on. Citizen Westbridge reattaches it for her.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Despite being woefully under qualified, she takes part in the ambush attempt on Citizen Sadanis due to her grudge against her.
  • Suddenly Sober: Justified as Rain gets fed up with her drunken behavior and purifies the alcohol in her system.
     Tropes applying to other Officers
  • Godzilla Threshold: Several officers start working with Rain and even take orders from him, simply because the situation demanded it and civilian lives were on the line.
  • Kicked Upstairs: Officer Turton is referred to Vigilant and on the fast track to Sentinal by Warden Vatreece because he knows to much.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Even other officers have forgotten what Wolf's real name was.
  • Uncertain Doom: The status of a larger number of named officers is currently unknown.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Wolf can transform into a musk wolf, the first monster Rain encountered.

The DKE

     DKE as a whole

Democratic Kingdoms of Ekrustia

The Democratic Kingdoms of Ekrustia (abbreviated the DKE) is one of the two major powers on the continent of Ekrustia. It is collectively ruled by the 37 Citizens, gold level awaken who take the names of the cities they rule. While they typically rule their respective cities as they see fit, decisions regarding the DKE as a whole are decided by majority vote.
  • All Crimes Are Equal: They have one punishment for Guilders who break the treaty.
  • Black-and-Gray Morality: They don't seem much better than The Empire, but it does seem to be better.
  • The Federation: Likes to present itself like this anyway, but borders on The Alliance. It seems like a collection of city states that work together when the situation calls for it. Naturally they do appose The Empire, if only due to sharing most of the continent with them.
  • Lost Technology: They seem to have access to more Majistraal artifacts than is typical for nations of this world, including their DKE implant that allows the Citizens to talk to each other in real time regardless of distance. Exactly how much of this is pure magic and how much of this is Schizo Tech is unclear, but the system does seem to have elements of computer code.
  • Nepotism: Notability averted, at least with the elevation of a new Citizen. They have rules against promoting family members of existing Citizens. However they made an exception for Velika Vekuavak despite having an aunt who is a Citizen. It is considered dangerous if more than one Citizen comes from the same family. It is unknown how new Citizens are chosen to replace deceased ones.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: When a person becomes a Citizen they leave their own name behind, taking the name of the city they rule over. The real names of almost all the Citizens are never revealed.
  • People's Republic of Tyranny: The Citizens rule their respective cities as tyrants, having no equal, not even if another Citizen chooses to visit. The "Democratic" in their name comes from the fact that the Citizens themselves each get one vote on matters concerning the country as a whole.
     Velika

Lady Velika Vekuavak/ Citizen Sadanis

Velika Vekuavak is a noble from the DKE with a family originating from old Osarra. She is first seeing going to her family mine that had become infested with monsters. She is a very competent swordswoman, always carrying a multitude of blades.
  • Ancestral Weapon: Her Osaran swords were once owned by her late mother. Given that Osar and their legendary smiths are no longer around, it is possible they have been passed down through her family for generations.
  • BFS: Her mother's odachi, possibly the Fourth Sword of Osar, is a massive sword she keeps strapped to her back.
  • Cool Sword: She can never have enough swords, carrying several on her person, even though she typically only uses one. When confronting Rain's party for the first time she is more concerned with getting Tallheart to forge her the Fourth Sword of Osar rather than any trespasses they may have against her.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": She wishes to be called Velika, not Lady Vekuavak or Citizen Sadanis.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: Suffers Clothing Damage during a battle, likely due to her own Super-Speed, ending up naked. This doesn't seem to bother her, only asking for clothes afterward because she was cold.
  • Incompletely Trained: After the DKE's takeover, Velika is handled with the responsibility of managing Fel Sanadis while being locked in the barrier. Deconstructed since she's here to increase her level cap in order to reach gold plate (level 50), not handling a land that she isn't trained for, thus she had to work with the nobles that she knows are taking advantage of her inexperience. And after learning that Westbridge is dead, she falls into depression that she can't get out.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Carries a katana and a wakizashi at her hip.
  • Noble Fugitive: After returning control of Fel Sadanis to the Watch in exchange for a pardon, she goes on the run from the rest of the DKE who are after the Clingy MacGuffin they gave her.
  • Noodle Incident: Has a history with Lavarro, the details of which aren't elaborated on, but it's safe to say they don't like each other. Lavarro seems to be the stronger of the two.
  • Promoted to Scapegoat: Possibly. Despite her blood ties, during the DKE take over Velika is promoted to the newly minted position of Citizen Sadanis. She is then trapped in a barrier with only her swords and the clothes on her back, cut off from her resources, forced to pretend to be untouchable, with likely most everyone else in the barrier blaming her for the situation. Citizen Westbridge doesn't seem to even care if she survives the month or not. They simply needed a new Citizen to claim ownership of the city while the barrier was up due to its strategic value. After the failed attempt on her life, all blame is placed on her by the other Citizens. Eventually, they label her a spy to cover up their complicity in taking Fel Sadanis.
  • Riches to Rags: Goes from a noblewoman who seems to be able to buy or intimidate to get whatever she wants to a poor ruler cut off from her resources and g to get by. Eventually she doesn't even have the rags, just a sword and not a stitch of clothing.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: She has little to no issues with being seen naked. She was also quick to proposition several men who caught her eye after coming to Fel Sadanis.
  • Super-Speed: She is able to run fast enough to break the sound barrier.
     Citizen Westbridge

Citizen Westbridge

Citizen Westbridge was a high-level Awakened and ruling Citizen of Westbridge. His true name is not reported. He was a cynical old man, thinking little of Unawakened but nevertheless trying to minimize loss of life while brutally conquering a city.
  • Bus Crash: Shows up for a few chapters before leaving to return to his own city. The next we hear about him he has been killed off screen. Eventually we get a flashback of his death.
  • Collateral Damage: How he writes off a bunch of people he killed as he put a large crater in a residential zone.
  • Defiant to the End: Regardless of what Lavarro threatens him with he refuses to lower the barrier, believing doing so would put the DKE as a whole at risk. She kills him for it.
  • Kill It with Fire: Seems to be his go to attack, unleashing lots of fireballs in his battle with another gold plate.
  • Magical Eye: He is able to see the souls of the awaken, even locating Tallheart outside of the city.
  • Magic Missile Storm: Able to remotely summon several fireballs at once, which home in on his target.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Attempts to minimize casualties, especially the awaken, when conquering Fel Sadanis, even saving the life of a Watch officer. However this appears to of been to avoid political backlash as much as possible. While he checked to make sure there weren't any awaken in his path first, he still killed an unknown number of unawaken just to make a path to get to the artifact he was after.
     Citizen Jarro

Utuvus/Citizen Jarro

Utuvus was the name of a famous adventurer who was part of the Rousers. However, he is currently known as Citizen Jarro, one of the heads of state of the DKE.
  • Black Sheep: Rather unpopular among the other Citizens due to his tendency to vote against them.
  • The Good King: Certainly compared to the other Citizens. He is much beloved by his people as he actually seems to care about their well being, while the other Citizens act more like spoiled nobles.

The Empire

     The Empire as a whole

Empire of Adamant

The Adamant Empire is lead by Potentate Fecht who is revered by his people like a god. The people are fiercely loyal and dissent is not tolerated. It is one of the two main powers on the continent of Ekrustia.
  • Brainwashed: The people's loyalty seems to stem from some form of brainwashing, but it is unknown how this is carried out.
  • The Empire: Pretty much goes without saying. They are working on expanding their borders, but at this point, the only way is to go is through the DKE.
  • Fantastic Racism: They actively hunt cervidians, placing a bounty on their antlers. Other minorities don't do too well there either.
  • A Nazi by Any Other Name: Rain has certainly drawn the parallels with Nazi Germany. They are an expansionist empire that views everyone outside their boarders as the enemy. They have also demonized minorities and are outright committing genocide. Has propaganda and possibly actual brainwashing has even poisoned the minds of their children.
  • Suicide Attack: The Incarns are largely the only way for them to stand up to enemy gold plates. They undergo Explosive Overclocking to give them an incredible boost in power, even to stand up to gold plates. However, once the enchantments holding them together wear off they will literally explode. Because not every solder can be turned into an Incarn they have to be used wisely.
  • We Have Reserves: A major part of their military doctrine is to produce a large number of low level soldiers, giving them the same mass produced weapons so that when the weapons break down they could be replaced, or given to new soldiers if they break down first.
     Potentate Fecht
Potentate Fecht is the current ruler of the Empire of Adamant and one of only three platinum level awaken in the world.
  • Fantastic Racism: Shortly after his rise to power he decreed all the cervidians be killed.
  • The Ghost: We have yet to see him in person.
  • God-Emperor: Revered as a god by his people.
  • Noodle Incident: Once fought Warden Vatreece to a standstill. It took reality two years to heal from it.
  • Offstage Villainy: Pretty much everything he does could be considered offstage, as he has yet to appear in person, but a notable example is when he destroys Fel Sadanis and the land around it, turning it into a massive crater that will eventually become a great lake some day.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Came to power 100 years ago but looks like he is in his 40's.
  • The Unfought: We never actually see him. He is built up as this looming threat but then [[spoiler he and Vatreece kill each other off screen.]]
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: If what Warden Vatreece says is true then Fecht is trying to take over the world in a bid to fix the imbalance caused by the System, which has long since outlived its creators and hasn't adapted to the current world. However, his plan is doomed to fail as it will eventually fall to corruption and greed after he dies. Still, that doesn't explain his Fantastic Racism or his regular racism.
  • World's Strongest Man: Warden Vatreece is his main competition for the title.

     Lightbreaker
One of Fecht's top mages. His black skin speaks of his Osaran descent, but his head is shaved in defiance of tradition. He instead wears a neatly trimmed goatee.
  • Beard of Evil: Bald with a goatee.
  • Dragon Ascendant: While his status as The Dragon was debatable, he seems to of been the most powerful member of the Adamants after Fecht. When Fecht's death become apparent, Lightbreaker claims the throne for himself, vaporizing the sole dissenting voice.
  • Forced into Evil: Enslaved by the empire to fight it's enemies.
  • Hard Light: One of the spells in his arsenal.
  • Light Is Not Good: A complicated matter. He is a powerful light mage who despises the empire, but still serves Fecht while trying to kill the enemies of the empire in the most humane way possible.
  • Luke Iam Your Father: He is the father of Val. However Val denies this after discovering this fact, claiming his father is dead, even if his body is still moving around.
  • Noble Demon: He seeks to kill in the least painful way possible and believes the empire taking over the world will finally bring an end to the fighting.
  • Token Enemy Minority: The empire conquered Osar some time ago, but it is still odd that an Osaran is among their strongest mages.

Posthumous and flashback characters Untagged Spoilers

     Snowlilly

Snowlilly

Snowlilly, called Lilly for short, is the late wife of Tallheart. Like her husband she was a silver level awaken and a cervidian. However she was more combat oriented. The two of them worked together to fight the Empire and save their people.
  • Battle Couple: While Tallheart claims not to be a fighter, he could certainly hold his own in a fight. Lilly on the other hand was the official fighter.
  • The Dreaded: Taught the agents of the Empire to fear her and her husband. They were slow learners.
  • Fantastic Racism: Due to the persecution her people faced at the hands of the Empire, she developed strong reservations of dealing with humans. This led Tallheart to initially refusing to forge weapons for Ascension, excluding his closest friends. Even after coming around he struggled with his conscience.
  • Living Memory: When Tallheart starts exploring his own soul he finds a version of Lilly there. However he only encountered her once as far as he has reported.
  • The Lost Lenore: Sacrificed herself to save Tallheart from a dragon. He never got over her death.
     Elric
Ameliah's father and a silver plate Guilder. He was a Jack, but was never able to become a true Jack. Having found out the requirements later in life, he pushed his daughter to become one. Having lost his wife when Ameliah was young, he traveled with her, raising her in guild halls. He died when she was still rather young, trying to dig his way out of debt. This led to him taking Ameliah to Brightside to try and strike it rich, only for him to die in front of her.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: Hated his wife's sister. Never told Ameliah what her name was and was unable to recall it when they met in her soul years after his death.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: Played with, but likely subverted. Like Snowlilly for Tallheart, he appears in Ameliah's soul and questions if he is a ghost or a memory. He favors the ghost explanation, but his inability to give Ameliah any information he hadn't given her in life suggests the latter.
  • Perpetual Poverty: He went into debt to get a silver level cap. While this allowed him to take higher paying quests, the Bank would always take their cut as soon as he collected. This forced him to live far below what would normally be his means for a Guilder of his level.
     The Fleshsinger

Lerith Singer

Ameliah's first love, meeting her in Brightside years after her father's death. They were together for a while and he helped her raise her level cap. However, he eventually abandoned her, taking her money and accolade. Ameliah has attempted to follow his trail with little success. His betrayal has made it difficult for her to love again.
  • Body Horror: Experimented on people, modifying their bodies in different ways. Some he killed, others simply couldn't handle the modifications. One had horns that grew into their own brain.
  • Broken Pedestal: Ameliah once loved and idolized him. Now she regrets not killing him.
  • First Love: The first person Ameliah ever fell in love with.
  • Forced Transformation: As a silver-class awaken in an area mostly made up of low bronze-class, he wasn't exactly picky on his choice of "volunteers" for his modification experiments.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: At one point he starts modifying Ameliah into his ideal woman, which includes giving her horns, scales, and raiser sharp claws.
  • Painful Transformation: He has a skill that suppresses the pain of the transformations. However if he isn't around to maintain the changes a person will start to revert to normal and it will hurt like hell.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Ameliahs memories retrospectively paint him as the villain of her backstory, but she notes that she herself wasn't a hero either, at that time. His abandonment may of shaded her description of events. However it can be assumed the broad strokes of the tale were true.

Other Characters

     High King Kev

High King Kev

The High King of Ter’karmark, a meritocracy, where he is also the One, the highest rank among the Numbers. Along with Warden Vatreece and Potentate Fecht, he is one of only three platinum level awaken in the world. However he has barely been mentioned outside of being their peer.
  • The Ghost: Has yet to appear or even effect the story in any way.
  • World's Strongest Man: If Warden Vatreece ever wanted to take over the world he has a slim chance of stopping her. He might actually be the strongest if Vatreece and Fecht have killed each other.
     Captain Bakal
One of the seven Sea Kings, the pirate rulers of the port town of Three Cliffs. He is better known as the Barge King by most people, a name he doesn't really care for. He is a silver level awakened, but largely retired and spends his days maintaining his garden on his estate. He was described as very tall and overweight. Even so, he can lift a grown man with relative ease.
  • Big Eater: Frequently seen eating if not in a fight. If his waist size is anything to go by, he eats all the time.
  • The Dreaded: Known as the Barge King and feared and respected in Three Cliffs. However he has been out of the game long enough that he would be flattered if anyone outside of Three Cliffs remembers him.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He was a pirate but even he has no love for slavery. It's implied many of his crew and servants were former slaves he freed.
  • Fisher King: He is a Sea King of Three Cliffs. He can't be bothered to actually govern the city and it has turned into a cesspool of filth and crime. Subverted some as there were six other Sea Kings, but they couldn't be bothered to maintain anything outside of their interests either. Still, the city's look greatly improves once Captain Rain takes over.
  • Making a Splash: Can create water tentacles and even a barge out of solid water.
  • Pirate: Was one in his youth.
  • Retired Badass: Made quite the name and fortune for himself in his youth. However, he has been out of the game long enough that people outside of Three Cliffs have likely forgotten about him.
  • Villainous Glutton: Or retired villain. He was once a feared pirate, but these days he can't be bothered to leave his estate for anything short of the city being invaded. Eating and tending to his garden are his only interests.
