The Church of Providence

     In General
  • Badass Long Robe: The standard mission attire for Providence' exorcists are priest robes that can be partly dismantled to allow the exorcists access to their weapons.
  • The Chosen Many: The exorcists are chosen by their patrons, the angels.
  • Clap Your Hands If You Believe: An exorcist's strength is largely dependent on his or her conviction. If their conviction isn't strong enough, their powers might falter or fail to activate at all.
  • Creepy Good: Despite performing some very satanic-looking rituals to get their powers, the members of Providence are firmly on the side of good and prioritize saving people.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: The exorcists were just regular humans until they received their covenants.
  • Healing Factor: Certain blessings allow exorcists to heal their wounds in short time. Some blessings are more effective than others.
  • Heroes With Bad Publicity: They're often accused of being an "Occultic Church" or even a "Church of Witchcraft" due to their covenants.
  • Power Tattoo: Exorcists in Providence receive special tattoos, drawn from manna given by their patrons, the angels. These tattoos allow them to materialize sacred weaponry and use supernatural powers after calling on their respective guardian angels.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: Due to them having received the blessings of their patrons, exorcists in Providence all have golden pupils that light up whenever they use their powers.

     Ezra
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/covenant_ezra.PNG
The protagonist of the comic. A strong, young exorcist who doesn't believe in God.
  • Action Duo: With Samson. They fight together the most and trust each other enough to try and suceed at risky maneuvers.
  • All-Loving Hero: Ezra puts the protection of his charges above all else and will gladly shield friends and allies with his body if necessary. It's one of the reasons he reacts so shocked to Esther's cold-blooded murder of a demon whose victim was still contracted to him: He himself had done everything in his power to knock the demon out and even explicitly told Esther not to strike to kill, precisely because he wanted to save the human.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: He often pulls Samson into things she really doesn't want to be a part of. Like stalking the guy he's supposed to protect.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: He is unable to believe in God, even though he's currently the ward of two archangels and fights against demons for a living. He actually addresses this in a flashback in episode 8, stating that he can believe in both demons and angels because he saw them first hand, whereas with God he is supposed to just believe that He's there and watching without ever being given evidence, which he can't bring himself to do.
  • A Shared Suffering: Him and Sunny have a nice bonding moment when Ezra empathizes with his Dark and Troubled Past and admits he used to be Plagued by Nightmares as well.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: While his age hasn't been stated, Ezra is often treated as the youngest, least experienced in his team, with Samson often having to watch out for him during fights and having to perform the sacred rites for him because he often can't remember them.
  • Badass Boast: Ezra might be keenly aware of his flaws, but that doesn't mean he'll let demons talk down to or demean him. When a demon calls him weak because he relies on the power of the angels, Ezra simply states that the power isn't simply given but has to be earned.
Ezra: My power may be a gift, but this power is only given to the strong. And the strength of an exorcist is the strength of their conviction. And my conviction... (completely trounces the demon in just a few moves) My conviction is strong enough to defeat the likes of you.
  • Badass in Distress: Ezra gets in over his head from time to time, mostly when he gets too confident. When that happens, it's often up to Samson to bail him out.
  • Barrier Warrior: After receiving a covenant from the archangel Barachiel, he is able to conjure up a shield made of light.
  • Bash Brothers: Him and Samson often kick ass together.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: He might get a bit of dirt on his face during fights, but apart from that? No visible injuries on this guy.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He might be fun-loving and goofy at times, but he's always dead serious when on the job.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Along with Samson. In episode 4 they arrive at a scene just in time to save a young man from a demon.
  • Blade on a Rope: His weapon is a kunai attached to a long chain.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: While he's massively talented in physical combat and strong enough to carry two blessings from two different archangels, he has trouble learning the verses needed to exorcise demons. This leads to him frequently having to rely on Samson to excorcize demons for him.
  • Buttmonkey: He gets riffed on a lot by allies and enemies alike. Even Gabriel isn't above getting a shot in at times.
  • Cassandra Truth: In episode 11 he tries to tell Sunny he's only following him to protect him, but because he can't answer from whom (because he doesn't know) Sunny doesn't believe him and dismisses him as a persistent weirdo.
  • Child Prodigy: He gained Gabriel's attention when he was just a child.
  • The Chosen One: His first patron was none other than the archangel Gabriel himself. Unfortunately, Ezra's lack of faith currently prevents him from actually using his benefactor's blessing.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: He frequently tries to save absolutely everyone, which inevitably ends in him being devastated and haunted by every single death he couldn't prevent.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Episode 9 implies his family was killed by demons and Ezra himself only survived because Gabriel showed up and gave him his first blessing. This incident is also hinted to be the reason for him not believing in God. While he had seen demons as well as angels by that point, the big G himself still failed to show up.
  • Declaration of Protection: Mentally promises Sunny to protect him after seeing the bruises a demon's assault left him with.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: In episode 9, a woman dies horrifically in his arms when the demon who contracted her is killed.
  • Failure-to-Save Murder: Adina tries to argue that the death of the contracted victim wasn't Esther's fault but his, because he didn't do enough to knock the demon out.
  • Gentle Giant: He's incredibly tall, best shown when he's standing next to Samson who is 5'9 but still almost a head smaller than him, and he's a friendly, forthcoming guy.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Ezra is a nice person, but that doesn't mean he'll let himself get bullied or beaten on. Or the people he cares about, for that matter.
  • Heartbroken Badass: He's heavily depressed after the death of a cvillian in episode 10.
  • The Hero: He's the main protagonist, The Chosen One of the Archangel Gabriel and it's implied he'll have a big role to play in the upcoming war.
  • Heroic Build: With his job, it's basically a requirement to be ripped.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Not being able to use Gabriel's blessing has done a number on his self-esteem. In episode 10 he even admits to Gabriel that he thinks of himself as "broken" because his faith isn't strong enough to activate it.
  • Heroic Spirit: Ezra is an incredibly determined individual. Best shown in episode 9 where he forces himself to get back up, despite just having taken a hard hit from demon magic, when it briefly looks like the rest of the team is in trouble.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Inverted with him and Samson. Both of them are gay, so nothing is ever going to happen there romance-wise.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: The huge guy to Samson's tiny girl. Downplayed since Samson is actually fairly tall for a woman, Ezra is just a Gentle Giant.
  • Hunter of Monsters: He captures and banishes demons.
  • The Idealist: He firmly believes in Providence's goal of protecting the innocent from demons. It's one of the reasons he's so horrified by the Great Church's cut-throat manner of exorcism.
  • Internalized Categorism: Ezra can't believe in God and thinks there's something wrong with him because of this. Specifically because he can't use Gabriel's blessing. But as Gabriel tells him in episode 10, he wouldn't necessarily have to believe in God to activate it. Strong enough belief in anything would be enough, but since Ezra is so laser-focused on his atheism as the source of the problem, he doesn't even give that possible solution the time of day.
  • Made of Iron: Demons can yank him around, pummel him with demon magic and land a direct hit when he's distracted - it barely bothers him.
  • Nice Guy: Ezra is a nice person and a really good friend.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • He didn't tell Sunny that he was tasked to protect him from demons. Sunny actually knew about demons already, meaning if Ezra had been entirely honest, Sunny probably would have believed him. Instead, Ezra's evasive answers end up alienating Sunny. Which in turn, leads to Sunny getting attacked by a demon in his apartment while Ezra is in the Church of Providence.
    • In episode 17 it actually looks like his and Sunny's relationship is starting to improve. But then he keeps pressing the topic of demons, after Sunny repeatedly made it clear he doesn't want to talk about them. Predictably Sunny has a freak-out and throws Ezra out of his apartment.
  • No Social Skills: He freely admits to stalking Sunny when the latter asks how he knew about his whereabouts. Sunny is understandably not happy about it. He also doesn't seem to understand why Sunny wouldn't want anything to do with some weird guy who has admitted to tracking him down and who keeps following him around despite his protests.
  • Not Afraid to Die: While he's not a Death Seeker, Ezra is more than willing to put his own life on the line to protect and save others.
  • The Pollyanna: He had an extremely screwed-up childhood (thank the demons for that) and continues to see horrible things almost every day because of his job. But despite this, he's plucky, friendly and goofs around with his friends like his life is creams and peaches.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Gabriel's blessing makes a pair of light-wings appear on his back that can be used both for attacking and for defending.
  • The Protagonist: He's the main character of the comic.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Ezra has adorably big eyes when he's happy. Or when he wants something.
  • Save the World: Gabriel implies he'll have to do this in the future.
  • Stalker without a Crush: Zig-zagged. He starts following Sunny around, because Gabriel asked him to protect him, not because he has a crush on him. But if his repeated blushing around Sunny is any indication, he probably wouldn't mind if it evolved into more.
  • Supernatural Aid: The blessings he wields.
  • Survivor Guilt: It's implied he feels guilty for being unable to save his biological family.
  • Tyke Bomb: Ezra was found and recruited into his faith by Gabriel when he was still just a child. Slightly subverted, since while he serves the church with unshaking loyalty, he doesn't really believe in God and does what he does more out of a genuine desire to save and protect people.

     Samson
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/covenant_samson.PNG
The leader of Ezra's team and a fellow exorcist.
  • Action Hero: Downplayed. While Samson thinks with her guns and her fists most of the time, she's still smart enough to be tactical in her advance and she always makes sure that no civillians are harmed on her watch.
  • Anger Born of Worry: She practically blows up at Ezra whenever he endangers himself. In episode 1 she grabs him by the collar and yells at him for forgetting the rites to expel a demon and almost getting himself killed. In episode 15 her warning-text messages to Ezra about a demon being on campus get more and more aggressive when he fails to respond.
  • Anti-Hero: Contrasted with squeaky-clean Nice Guy Ezra, she deifnitely comes off as this. She's harsh, brutal and often extremely rude. But she's still Ezra's friend and ally at the end of the day.
  • Badass in Distress: In episode 16 she's in trouble for a bit when the demon she fights regenerates faster than she shoots, due to having absorbed the manna of two humans who didn't get away in time.
  • Bash Brothers: In fights she's often paired up with Ezra.
  • Bavarian Fire Drill: Her specialty. She often finds quick and effective ways to get by-standers out of dodge before a fight. And she's so insistent and fast about it that nobody thinks to question her.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Just like Ezra, she never looks worse for wear after a fight. And the few smudges of dirt she may get only serve to emphasize her handsomeness.
  • Berserk Button:
    • It's not really hard to set her off, but what really gets her pissed is talking trash about Providence.
    • She does not take kindly to anyone who views human lives as disposable, be it demons or fellow ruthless exorcists.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She may complain about it, but Samson is always looking out for Ezra. She cheers him up and comforts him when his Heroic Self-Deprecation sets in and gives him Tough Love when he gets ahead of himself.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Together with Ezra in episode 4. They arrive in the nick of time to intercept a demon who was about to contract a human.
  • Blood Knight: She approaches fighting with extreme gusto, no matter if her opponent is a demon or just a religious bigot who pissed her off.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: While she's mostly serious when on the job, she's not above a little boasting. It's well-earned, since she tends to deal the most damage in fights.
  • Brains and Brawn: She's a talented fighter and a university student.
  • Bromantic Foil: To Ezra. She's the more jaded, down-to-earth and aggressive of the two and often pulls him out of trouble. In turn, Ezra prevents her from picking fights and getting too lost in her temper.
  • Butch Lesbian: Her hair is close-cropped, she's very muscular and it's been confirmed both in and out of universe, that she's a lesbian.
  • Cool Big Sis: Her and Ezra are as close as family and she always keeps an eye out for him.
  • Death Glare: If looks could kill, Esther, Adina, Bishop Price and Ezra would be six feet under several times.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Samson treats demons like the arrogant pests they are and isn't the least bit cowed by their power and appearance.
  • Emotional Bruiser: She knows how to bring demons tons of pain and she's fairly impulsive, but she's also caring and sisterly towards Ezra.
  • Friendship Moment:
    • She has a lot of nice, fun moments with Ezra.
    • She's really happy about seeing Ruth again in episode 5 and vice versa, exchanging a fist-bump.
  • Gender-Blender Name: A woman who is named Samson. It's completely okay to be confused about this at first.
  • Good Is Not Nice: She's got quite a mouth on her, but she's a good person all in all.
  • Guns Akimbo: Wields two machine guns as her holy weapons.
  • The Gunslinger: Her holy weapons are two firearms and she's bulldozing through demons by the dozen most of the time.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She has bleach-blonde hair and is a heroic exorcist.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Inverted with her and Ezra. They're best pals who live with and fight alongside each other. She's a lesbian, he's gay, so no romance there.
  • It's Personal: It's implied that her beef with the Great Church is rooted in some event in the past. Not that their present behavior does anything to alleviate it, mind.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's harsh, abrasive and confrontational, but she's a fundamentally good person and a great friend to Ezra.
  • Lady Looks Like a Dude: She's short-haired, muscular and named 'Samson' but she is, in fact, a woman.
  • Mama Bear: While she is just as infuriated over Esther disregarding Ezra's plea to not kill a contracted demon, lest she kill his victim too, her main reason for booting Esther and Adina from her team is not wanting someone who is so dismissive of human lives anywhere near her teammates.
  • Made of Iron: She takes a magic beam to the shoulder in episode 9, but it doesn't seem to bother her at all.
  • Master of Illusion: As a disciple of the angel Raziel, she has the power to create false walls and illusions, so her fellow exorcists can work without worrying about being seen by normal humans.
  • The Leader: She's in charge of Ezra's squad and takes her job very seriously.
  • Slasher Smile: She often gives a wide Grin of Audacity when she's feeling superior. To be fair, she's often right with that assumption.
  • The Strategist: She's the one who coordinates the team when they're on patrol.
  • Strong and Skilled: She's an absolute beast in fights, even when not firing her guns.
  • Tough Love: She gives Ezra shit a lot of the time, but she does care. In fact, giving him shit is her way of telling him that she cares.

     Goliath
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/covenant_goliath.PNG
A giant exorcist and friend of Ezra and Samson.
  • Battle Couple: With Isaac. They're usually teaming up on patrols.
  • Bear Hug: Pulls Ezra into a really painful one on his first appearance in episode 5.
  • The Big Guy: He's the biggest and physically strongest exorcist in the team and also a fun-loving party-animal.
  • Living Lie Detector: One of his spells lets him put a seal on a demon that will act as a Shock Collar whenever the demon attempts to tell a lie.
  • Meaningful Name: He's named after the biblical giant Goliath and is also the tallest character introduced so far.
  • Mundane Utility: Uses his telekinesis to sabotage Ezra during a game of beer-pong.
  • Rugged Scar: He has a big cut on his right cheek, presumably gained on the job.
  • Powers Do the Fighting: He's the only exorcist in Samson's team who isn't wielding a holy weapon, instead using his telekinesis and seals to fight.
  • Telekinesis: As episode 6 reveals, he can move things with his mind. The first time we see it, he uses it to cheat at beer pong.

     Isaac
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/covenant_isaac.PNG
A seer-exorcist and Goliath's partner.
  • Anti-Villain: After Sunny's outburst gets Goliath and a lot of other exorcists injured, Isaac becomes hellbent on putting Sunny down, even joining up with the Great Church when the Church of Providence is unwilling to hunt down Sunny and Ezra. However, he still thinks of Ezra as a friend, despite being furious at him for just up and abandoning Providence and even ends up helping Ezra and Sunny escape from Beelzebub.
  • Badass Adorable: Happy and loving, but can cut a demon's whole body in half with his scythe.
  • Battle Couple: On patrol he usually teams up with Goliath.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He might be chipper and happy most of the time, but he has a severe hatred of demons, to the point that when Sunny's demonic powers are revealed, he suggests torturing him to make sure he's completely human. Season 2 has him teaming up with the Great Church, in order to join in on the hunt for Ezra and Sunny.
  • Cool Shades: When in public, he wears a pair of sunglasses to hide his Prophet Eyes.
  • The Cutie: He's a cheerful, petite guy who loves hugging.
  • Death Glare: Gives a very scary one to the Armless Demon after stopping it from attacking Goliath.
  • The Glomp: Immediately runs up to hug Ezra and Samson when they meet again after a long time. He almost knocks Ezra over in his enthusiasm.
  • Hidden Disdain Reveal: After his attemtps to kill Sunny fail and Ezra throws himself in front of Sunny to stop him from attacking again, Isaac loses it and yells at Ezra for his selfishness in only caring about Sunny and seemingly dismissing all the people Sunny's powers have hurt. He also expresses extreme bitterness over Ezra's status as The Chosen One who is allowed to get away with anything just because he has the archangel Gabriel on his side.
  • Innocently Insensitive: He can be pretty oblivious to other people's feelings. Best shown when, after Sunny accidentally reveals his demonic powers, he continues to talk about him like a lab experiment, while he's standing right there.
  • Meaningful Name: Isaac is hebrew for "He who laughs". He's an upbeat cutie who loves hugging.
  • Necromancer: Him being a disciple of Azrael allows him to call upon the souls of the dead to assist him in battle.
  • Prophet Eyes: Just like Leah and presumably all seers in Providence, he has black sclerae and golden pupils.
  • Seers: He has the ability to see and track manna.
  • Sinister Scythe: His sacred weapon is a massive, black scythe.
  • Violently Protective Boyfriend: Implied. He stabs a demon through the chest after it attempts to charge at Goliath and looks visibly upset after.
    Isaac: No touching.

     Ruth
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/covenant_ruth.PNG
A member of Samson's team.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She has a very dry sense of humor, which, coupled with her stoicism, results in a lot of snarking.
  • Dual Wielding: She can fight with both of her katanas at the same time.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Her sacred weapons are katanas. And she's very skilled with them.
  • Moment Killer: In episode 6 she drags Ezra and Samson away from the party-goers they were flirting with to inform them that Goliath and Isaac want to play beer-pong.
  • Only Sane Man: She's a lot more down to earth than most of the members of Samson's group. Though she's not above needling or enabling them at times.
  • The Stoic: She rarely emotes.

     Hiram
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hiram.PNG
The priest responsible for tattooing the covenants onto exorcists.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He has a rather dry sense of humor.
(about Ezra complaining that getting a covenant hurts) "I am stabbing you repeatedly. It is supposed to hurt."
  • Light Is Good: A priest under god who wears a white robe.

     Leah
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/covenant_leah.PNG
The head seer of the Church of Providence.
  • Exposition Fairy: She explains the mythology of angels and demons and how manna works to Bishop Price. In-universe, it's to disperse any suspicion that Providence might be working with demons. But it's also a good way to get the readers caught up on the comic's lore.
  • Prophet Eyes: Like all seers, she has black sclerae and golden pupils. Bishop Price at first believes her to be a demon because of this.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She investigates Isaac's claim that Sunny might be a demon thoroughly, but lets Sunny go when she can't find any evidence that he could pose a danger to Providence. She even scolds Isaac for jumping to conclusions and treating Sunny like a lab rat.
  • Mission Control: She acts as this for Providence, constantly overlooking he fluctuations of manna in their precinct.
  • Seers: She's the head disciple of the angel Azrael, which gives her the power to sense and locate manna.
  • Sinister Scythe: When in battle, she uses a large black scythe, identical to Isaac's.

     Father Jude
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/co_father_jude.PNG
An older exorcist who focuses primarily on healing the wounded in battle.
  • Barrier Warrior: He can create massive barriers of light that no one can go in or out of.
  • Healing Hands: He has the power to heal wounds through his covenant.
  • The Medic: He is the designated healer of Father Aaron's team.
  • Teleportation with Drawbacks: One of his powers is to "port" people to certain locations. Though episode 36 implies he has a limit on how many he can transport at once.

     Father Aaron
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/covenant_father_aaron.PNG
The head of the Church of Providence.
  • BFS: His sacred weapon is a black broadsword.
  • Big Good: He's the leader of an organization of Badass Preachers and a good mentor and father-figure to Ezra.
  • Hero of Another Story: Episode 36 reveals he has fought and defeated Belial before. Apparently the defeat was quite painful for her.
  • Parental Substitute: It's obvious he is something of a father figure to the younger exorcists, Ezra especially.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He agrees with Samson that Esther and Adina were unfit to work with Providence and has them dismissed after reading about Esther's murder by proxy of an innocent bystander in Samson's report.
  • Silver Fox: He's obviously much older than most of the protagonists, having a fair bit more scars and greying hair, but he's just as attractive.
  • Summon Magic: Invoking his blessing summons a magical lion that attacks for him and does a ton of damage.

The Great Church

     In General
  • Corrupt Church: Downplayed. On the outside, they're just as devoted to protecting the world from demons as Providence. But they also care nothing for the lives of non-believers or other sinners and are so uptight about their beliefs that any deviation from what they think is the proper way of worshipping God automatically draws their disdain.
  • Evil Counterpart: To the Church of Providence. While Providence is open-minded about the way people practice their religion and puts the well-being of humans above all else, the Great Church is traditional and conservative to a fault, to the point that they think nothing of sacrificing contracted humans by killing the demon they're bound to.
  • Good Is Not Nice: It's debatable how good the Great Church actually is, but they do exorcise and kill demons to protect people. They're just a lot more relaxed about civillian casualties while doing so.
  • In the Hood: The nuns in the Great Church wear traditional-looking habits with hoods that completely cover their hair.

     Bishop Price
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/covenant_that_asshole.PNG
A leading power in the Great Church. He is suspicious of all things he considers "pagan" and seems especially focused on the Church of Providence.
  • Asshole Victim: He ends up as one of the victims of Sunny's outburst, crushed by rubble.
  • Dirty Coward: He puts up a facade of bravado, but is easily spooked by anything that doesn't fit into his world-view. He doesn't even step up to defend himself, but instead has his acolytes pull their weapons on Samson when she lambasts him for making baseless accusations.
  • Hate Sink: He's a narrow-minded, arrogant twat and a Dirty Coward. Not much to like about him.
  • Ignorant of His Own Ignorance: His information on the Church of Providence is lacking, to put it mildly. But he himself is thoughroughly convinced he's dealing with a coven of demon-worshippers and will flat-out ignore any and all evidence to the contrary.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: He himself is far from the highest power in the Great Church, but what makes him so dangerous is his connections to a lot of the actual higher-ups. Father Aaron admits to Ezra and Samson that Price might well gain enough support to drive Providence underground if he plays his cards right, despite having no factual evidence.
  • Sinister Minister: His introduction alone establishes him as bad news. He has the position of a bishop within the Great Church and is dead-set on excommunicating Providence.
  • Smug Snake: He makes no secret of his feelings of superiority towards Providence, even threatening to have them wiped out if his suspicions about them working with demons turn out to be correct. But as Father Aaron reveals, he is far from the highest power in the Great Church. He himself isn't even a fighter and has to rely on his acolytes to defend him.

     Adina
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/covenant_adina.PNG
A nun of the Great Church.
  • Berserk Button: She has a hand on her sword the second Samson insults Bishop Price.
  • Blatant Lies: When reporting to Bishop Price in episode 13, she claims Providence was taking the side of the demons and refused to answer her and Esther's questions. Ezra answered every one of Esther's questions until they had to fight. She also withholds that the reason she and Esther were dismissed so soon was that Esther killed a contracted demon after explicitly being told not to, which lead to the innocent woman he contracted dying as well.
  • Evil Is Petty: She deliberately provokes Samson several times, doesn't even thank her for saving her life during their patrol together and later on calls Providence's way of exorcism "bullshit".
  • Hero with an F in Good: As an exorcist she's supposed to protect people. But she shows zero concern for Esther indirectly killing an innocent woman and remains stubborn in her belief that killing all demons is the best way to get rid of them.
  • Hidden Eyes: Her eyes are covered by a golden mask. How she manages to see anyway is a mystery. Episode 13 reveals she has black markings underneath it.
  • Hypocrite: She admonishes Samson for being insolent, but she herself shows zero respect for the members of Providence and only doubles down when called out for her attitude.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While she's anything but nice about it, she is correct whens he tells Samson that she relies too much on her guns.
  • Never My Fault: Or more like "Never Her Fault". When Ezra calls Esther out for killing a demon who made a contract with a human, leading to the human dying due to a Shared Life-Meter, she immediately shoots back that Ezra could have slain the demon himself and that Esther was forced to kill it due to his inaction and then goes on to accuse the whole team of being protective of and secretly supporting demons.
  • The Rival: She seems to get some enjoyment out of picking fights with and antagonizing Samson.
  • Smug Smiler: The only kind of smile she ever gives.
  • Tainted Veins: Episode 13 reveals that beneath her white gloves, her forearms are blackened up to her elbows.
  • Those Two Guys: She's almost always accompanied by Esther.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: Samson saves her hide during their mission together. But Adina doesn't get anymore friendly towards her or the rest of the team and even directly accuses them of protecting the demons once the fight is over.
  • You Are What You Hate: She seems especially fixated on the symbols that Providence' exorcists tatto onto their bodies when reporting her suspicions to Bishop Price. When she's alone in her quarters later on, she quietly repeats Esther's assessment of the tattoos as "unsightly" to herself while taking off her mask and gloves to reveal she herself has dark markings of uncertain origin on her body.

     Esther
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/covenant_esther.PNG
A nun of the Great Church. Other than her comrades, she actually attempts to get along with the Church of Providence. But not for any noble reasons.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Episode 13 reveals that she was the one who suggested Providence was allying with demons in the first place. When in the presence of Providence-acolytes she acts the friendly nun, but when alone with Bishop Price and Adina, she calls their Covenant-markings "unsightly" and says that they give her the creeps while sporting a cruel smirk.
  • Evil Redhead: We can tell from her eyebrows that her hair is red and underneath her kind facade, she's a huge Bitch in Sheep's Clothing who looks down on Providence and wants to see them destroyed.
  • Foreshadowing: When Samson refuses to take her and Adina along on a mission, she uses subtle Blackmail to weasel them on board anyway, by implying her and Adina might write in their report that Providence refused to cooperate, which would throw even more suspicion on them. When chewed out by Ezra and the rest of the team for killing a demon whose contract was still active and defended by Adina she relents, but not because she thinks she did something wrong, but because, as she puts it, Adina and her are on Providence' turf and have to play by their rules as long as they are. All of this subtly foreshadows that she's not as nice as she makes herself out to be.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Her eyes are blueish-green and she's by far the friendliest member of the Great Church. She actually attempts to form a good relationship with Samson's team, always stays polite and calm and takes Samson's open hostility in stride. She also often keeps Adina from provoking fights. Subverted. Episode 13 shows she's anything but innocent.
  • Manipulative Bitch: While Adina is upfront about her dislike of Providence, Esther deliberately pretends to be nice and open-minded to weasel information out of Ezra. That she then later uses to incriminate him and the rest of Providence to Bishop Price.
  • Morality Pet: She's often the one to calm Adina down and de-escalate fights between her and Samson. In turn, Adina genuinely seems to care for her, immediately checking on her well-being after the fight in the warehouse and defending her when Ezra calls her out for killing a demon who was still contracted. Turns out the only reason she acted like this, was so she could gain Providence' trust to rat them out later on.
  • Those Two Guys: She's rarely seen without Adina by her side.
  • Token Good Teammate: To the Great Church. She seems to be a lot more open-minded than her fellow priests and nuns, down to actually asking Ezra questions about his powers, instead of automatically assuming they're devil's work like Bishop Price or Adina. Downplayed, in that she still seems to be selective on who deserves to be saved and can't seem to understand why Providence prioritizes rescuing people over killing demons. Later subverted hard. She's even more prejudiced than Bishiop Price and even seems to get some enjoyment out of telling him lies about Providence' actions and making fun of their Power Tattoos.

Demons

     In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/covenant_demons.PNG
The main antagonists of the comic. Unholy creatures who prey on humans and wreak havoc where ever they go.
  • The Ageless: Downplayed. While they never age, their inability to generate manna means they have to regularly harvest it from humans or die.
  • Alien Blood: The blood of demons is pitch-black.
  • Ancient Evil: Demons are Fallen Angels who have been around since the beginning of time. And they're all unambiguously evil.
  • Arch-Enemy: They directly oppose the angels and therefore by proxy their wards the exorcists.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: As a small conversation between two demon Mooks in episode 7 reveals, demons act mostly on a system of "if they're stronger than you, they're your boss".
  • Badass Crew: Demon groups are really tough to deal with.
  • Barbie Doll Anatomy: Demons do not possess any kind of genitalia.
  • Chest Insignia: Demons have a black sigil that spells out their name on their chest. The demon who invaded the campus to kidnap Sunny has a second one, but it's on his eye-socket (or where an eye-socket normally would be), clueing Ezra in that he's contracted and acting under the orders of someone.
  • Dark Action Girl: Female demons are just as capable in the fighting department as male demons.
  • Deal with the Devil: They get manna out of humans by way of a "contract", a mark edged into the victim's neck. Unfortunately, unlike with most conventional examples of this trope, the human in question doesn't need to consent for it to work. As episode 16 reveals, it's even possible for demons to make contracts with each other.
  • Dirty Coward: The less powerful demons intentionally attack defenseless humans at night or in areas that have no or few exorcists. Notably, no demon so far has tried to attack an exorcist for their manna. Most likely because the risk greatly outweighs the reward.
  • Evil Counterpart: To the angels. They're what an angels becomes if they fall from grace.
  • Evil Gloating: Demons sure love their speeches.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: A demon's eyes aren't always located on their head. And sometimes they have more than one pair.
  • Fallen Angel: They're angels who have lost God's favor and were thus deprived of their manna. Their only way of getting new manna now is to suck it out of humans - whether they're willing to give it or not.
  • Fantastic Racism: Demons see humans as little more than food sources and treat them with disdain at best and outright hatred at worst.
  • Good Hurts Evil: Angelic and sacrimetal weapons can severely injure and even kill demons.
  • Hell: All demons hail from Gehenna and will be sent back their if the Banishing Ritual is performed correctly.
  • Hot as Hell: Some demons are quite attractive, even counting their more outlandish features.
  • Holy Burns Evil: Downplayed, but Sunny, who is all but stated to be a half-demon, gets high-degree burn marks on his hand, after using his supernatural powers while wielding a holy blade. Sacrimetal weapons seem able to burn demons simply by touch.
  • Immortality: Provided they find enough humans to feed off of, demons can practically live forever.
  • Light Is Not Good: Demons in their true form have stark white skin with black patches.
  • Monstrous Humanoid: Even in their true forms, demons remain vaguely human-like in appearance.
  • Obviously Evil: Most demons aren't subtle about their evilness.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: All demons shown so far have piercing red eyes.
  • Sadist: While demons have to feed off of humans to survive, it's undeniable that they take great pleasure in their victims' fear.
  • Super-Strength: Demons can pick up and throw around humans with zero effort.
  • Super-Toughness: Demons don't need anything but manna to survive. They can't die of old age or regular injuries and they're much stronger and more agile than humans.
  • Stupid Evil: With the lesser demons, their violent urges often overpower their need for self-preservation. An especially egregious example is the second demon sent after Sunny. As Samson points out to him, him attacking a full classroom, on a unversity campus in broad daylight was bound to ring several exorcists' alarm bells and get him vanquished in no time. Which is exactly what ends up happening.
  • Villain in a White Suit: Demons in human form primarily wear white suits, with maybe one black article of clothing thrown in there.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: A demon can disguise itself as a human if need be and change back into it's true form just as easily.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Some demons have white hair and they're just as homicidal as the ones who just have horns.

     Valac
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/valac.PNG
A demon working under the Demon Lord and the first sent to kidnap Sunny.
  • By the Hair: When Sunny tries to run for his knife, Valac grabs him by the hair and taunts him by stating that he likes it when his prey runs.
  • Dirty Coward: He's all boasts and violence when he believes Sunny is just a regular human. But when Sunny actually starts fighting back and injures him, he runs away.
  • Eye Scream: Sunny scares him off by stabbing him in the eye. It still hasn't healed the next time we see him.
  • In the Hood: He wears a long, white cloak with a hood that covers the Demon Lord's sigil on his forehead.
  • Neck Lift: He grabs Sunny by the neck and chokes him after disarming him.
  • Sadist: He downright admits he likes it when his victims run from him and takes obvious pleasure in choking Sunny.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: He decides to call it a day after realizing Sunny won't let himself get captured so easily.

     Andras
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/andras.PNG
One of the Demon Lord's enforcers.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Sunny rips off one of her legs and stabs her to death with it.
  • Bald of Evil: She doesn't have hair, which emphazises the sigil on her forehead.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: She admits to Sunny that even if she was present for the slaughter of his family, she probably wouldn't remember since she already killed so many humans and never really bothered to learn their names.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice:
    • Her preferred method of using her Spider Limbs. She uses the sharp points to literally pin her opponents and drag them around.
    • She dies by being put on the receiving end of this when Sunny, using his powers, rips off one of her legs and runs her through with it.
  • In the Hood: Just like Valac, she wears a white, hooded cloak.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Unlike Valac, she doesn't needlessly torture Sunny, but grabs him and takes off right afterwards. She also only engages in battle with Ezra once he reveals he's an exorcist and that he won't just let her take Sunny.
  • Spider Limbs: She has four spider legs protruding from her back that she uses to walk or attack.

     The Armless Demon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cv_armless_demon.PNG
A servant of the Demon Lord, who's missing both of his arms.
  • Artificial Limbs: He uses manna to replace his arms.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: He turns his manna-arms into deadly blades to fight.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Two independent demons attempt to attack him after correctly deducing that they're after the same prey (Sunny). He kills them in mere seconds.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: He kills two other demons in his introductory scene without even breaking a sweat.
  • Defiant Captive: Refuses to tell Samson's team anything about his lord or her plans, even under threat of torture. Downplayed, as he reveals the nature of his contract wouldn't let him tell them anything, even if he wanted to.
  • Handicapped Badass: Both of his arms are missing, but that doesn't make him any less of a threat.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Isaac stabs him with his scythe when he attempts to attack Goliath.
  • In the Hood: He wears a white hooded cloak that conceals his missing arms.
  • Kick the Dog: He mocks Sunny for not knowing why his family was attacked years ago and rubs the fact that he didn't know it was Lily they wanted, not him in his face, while still refusing to give him any answers.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: When he realizes he'll have a hard time beating Samson's team, he attempts to make a run for it. He fails.
  • Logical Weakness: Since his arms are made from his magic, finding a way to restrict his manna usage renders him helpless pretty quick.
  • Nonchalant Dodge: The two demons attacking him don't manage to land a single hit on him and he never really seems like he's struggling while he's avoiding their attacks.
  • Shapeshifter Weapon: Since his arms are made from his magic, he can give them any form he wants to.

     The Demon Lord / Belial
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/demon_lord.PNG
A very powerful demon who seems to have plans for Sunny.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: In the end it turns out that, for all her grandstanding and scheming, she herself was merely a pawn for the actual Big Bad: Sunny's father.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: It takes her only one magical attack to take out the majority of Samson's team.
  • The Dreaded: Valac is terrified the whole time he's reporting Andras' failure to her and begs for her mercy once he's finished.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: While she has a weird way of showing it, she truly does care for her legion. Her efforts to get Sunny into her hands are largely motivated by her desire to keep them from starving to death. She is also revealed to have a lover who is on her deathbed, something that deeply troubles her.
  • Feathered Fiend: She wears a feather-cape around her shoulders and has been established as the Greater-Scope Villain of the comic.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: She is behind the demon attacks on Sunny and was most likely the one who ordered his family killed, if she didn't murder them herself. Subverted, as she's actually working for Sunny's father.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: She resents humanity for being God's beloved while her and the other demons were abandoned by him.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Has her right eye covered by a few strands of hair. Father Aaron cuts them off in episode 35, revealing that she, too, is contracted.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • She tells one of the humans she contracted that she'll release her, then, when the human asks if she really means it, admits that she was just kidding and drains the woman of her manna in one go.
    • After incapacitating most of Samson's team, she goes on to drain the party-goers at the club of their manna, completely ignoring their pleas to stop.
    • She allows Valac to beat up a defenseless Sunny, commenting that if he couldn't take it, then he wasn't a worthy vessel. She also downright gloats about being responsible for Lily's death and calls her "weak".
  • Pet the Dog: She heals a legionnaire who returns from a mission heavily injured without hesitation, despite manna currently being in short supply to her legion.
  • She Is the King: Despite being a female demon, her underlings refer to her as their lord, as do the exorcists.
  • Villainous Breakdown: She starts screaming and throwing a tantrum when she fails to bind Sunny to her and her legion, then completely loses it when Ezra finally defeats and exorcises her.
  • Visionary Villain: She seems to have greater plans for her legion than just feeding. She has sent her troops to try and kidnap Sunny starting from when he was only twelve and hasn't stopped trying to get him into her claws ever since then.
  • We Have Reserves: She doesn't seem the least bit concerned about her underlings being slain or injured, even stating she prefers them getting themselves killed to them showing up empty-handed.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: She reacts to Andras' death by stating that Andras did well to be slain, rather than return after failing to fulfill her task and only still keeps Valac around because he might be of use to her yet.

     Spoiler Character

Sunny's Father

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cv_sunnys_dad.PNG
The mysterious demon who fathered Sunny and Lily.
  • Abusive Parents: He doesn't care one bit for the well-being of his children and sees them only as potential vessels he can use to return to the human world.
  • Archnemesis Dad: He's been hunting for Sunny through Belial's legion for years and has had many people killed in the crossfire. Belial even reveals that the suffering Sunny was put through was intentional, because his father believed it would make him a stronger vessel.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Turns out to be the actual mastermind behind the demons' hunt for Sunny, having contracted Belial in order to give her manna for her legion.
  • I Lied: Nonchalantly tells Belial that she was never meant to have Sunny in her legion as he originally promised her as she's being exorcised.

     Beelzebub
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/covenant_beelzebub.PNG
The demon responsible for Ezra becoming and exorcist. He's basically a human trafficker.
  • Belly Mouth: In his true form, his face and mouth are situated on his belly.
  • Fat Bastard: Has a notable gut (that's also his face) and enjoys terrorizing and draining helpless prisoners.
  • Power Parasite: He's able to directly absorb manna, which makes magical attacks pretty much useless against him.

Angels

     In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/covenant_angels.PNG
The Church of Proviendce' patrons. Messengers from God who grant exorcists power in exchange for their service.
  • The Ageless: The angels play this a lot more straight than the demons. Angels still have unlimited manna within them, so they'll never age and they'll never die.
  • Angelic Abomination: If the illustrations in episode 4 are accurate, angels look a lot like demons, with the only difference being the color of their skin and eyes.
  • Chest Insignia: Just like the demons, the angels have golden sigils of their names on their chest. Justified, since demons are Fallen Angels.
  • Energy Beings: Angels are made of manna. An angel who loses their ability to create manna becomes a demon.
  • Our Angels Are Different: Judging by Gabriel's appearance, angels in this universe look like humans with black skin and golden eyes and have no wings. They're also completely made of manna. Then again, Gabriel might just be posing as a human.
  • The Ghost: Though frequently mentioned and talked about, no angel aside from Gabriel ever shows up in the story in person.

     Gabriel
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/covenant_gabriel.PNG
An archangel and Ezra's first patron.
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: It's implied the form he uses to contact Ezra through dreams isn't his actual form.
  • Archangel Gabriel: Duh. He's the one who converted Ezra to Christianity (at least partly) and frequently visits him in his dreams.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He has stark black skin, golden eyes and a slightly unsettling demeanor sometimes, but he is a servant of God and on Ezra's side.
  • The Ditz: He needs a notebook to keep track of his messages and it's implied that whatever he doesn't write down, he forgets. He also makes Ezra climb a tree to get to him in his first appearance for no reason other than he thinks it's fun.
  • The Gadfly: He enjoys teasing Ezra now and again.
  • Holy Backlight: Given who he is, it's practically a given.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He appears as a beautiful man with long, flowing hair in Ezra's dreams.
  • The Mentor: He tries to help Ezra find his conviction, so he may use Gabriel's blessing. He even tells Ezra that it doesn't have to be conviction in God, just any conviction strong enough will do.
  • Mysterious Informant: The information he gives Ezra is often cryptic. Much to Ezra's frustration.
  • Talking in Your Dreams: He regularly visits Ezra in his dreams to bring him warnings and prophecies of things to come or to ask things of him.

Humans

     Sunny
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/covenant_sunny.PNG
A seemingly normal human boy. Ezra is tasked with protecting him, but he doesn't seem too keen on the idea.
  • Action Survivor: He manages to briefly fend off a demon with nothing but a holy blade in episode 12. He implies that he killed another demon in the past, though he ended up scarred in the process.
  • Ambiguously Human: The comic frequently implies that he's a demon or is at least strongly connected to demons. Episode 3 ends on a panel that makes it look like he has horns, he always seems to come into the picture when Ezra talks or thinks about Gabriel's warning about "The Fallen Who Never Fell" and in episode 10, he's briefly surrounded by a dark aura when sitting down next to Ezra. Episode 12 seems to confirm that he is human, but for some reason, demons seem to have it out for him. But in episode 13 he briefly gets Black Eyes of Crazy after seeing the demon's mark and gets a power boost that sends the demon running. Then it's revealed that holding the holy blade gave him burn marks.
  • Berserk Button: Making light of his family's death. Andras dismissing his question if she was present by telling him all her human victims look the same to her prompts him to punch her in the face and the Armless Demon indirectly referring to their murder as "mistakes" makes him angry enough to stab his knife through the latter's thigh.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: Gains this briefly during his Heroic BSoD in episode 13. It says a lot that a demon is freaked out by them.
  • Broken Smile: A heartbreaking example in episode 18. When Ezra assures him he just wants to help, Sunny breaks into a twisted smile and muses how a normal kid like Ezra could possibly help him against demons.
  • Combat Pragmatist: As episode 13 shows, he isn't afraid to fight dirty to survive.
  • Covered in Scars: The frequent demon attacks have left him with a number of scars on his body, as his Shirtless Scene in episode 21 shows.
  • Crucified Hero Shot: Is hung up this way when brought to Belial's lair.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: On the receiving end in episode 12. Though he manages to fight back for a short time, the demon sent to his apartment to kidnap him is able to overpower and lift him by the neck very quickly after it gets over it's initial surprise at him wielding a holy weapon. He then manages to dish one out after a Heroic BSoD triggers some sort of dark power in him.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Demons attacked and presumably killed his mother and older sister when he was 12. He himself barely made it out alive. However, the demons continued to track him down and kill his foster families, forcing him to spend his life moving around with only a small, holy knife left by his mother to defend himself.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Despite his appearance and gruff demeanor, he's not a bad guy. After initially trying to just make Ezra go away, he actually takes the time to listen to his reasons for following him later on and even calmly and politely asks him to stop, explaining that he really just wants to be left alone. Later on it's implied he might be part demon, but he himself doesn't seem to know or want anything to do with that part of his heritage for that matter.
  • Defence Mechanism Superpower: His supernatural powers always come into play when he's experiencing extreme emotional turmoil. Once they're activated, his body seems to move on its own. They also tire him out something fierce, as he always collapses once he goes back to normal.
  • Defiant Captive: Sunny will not go peacefully whenever the demons get their hands on him. If a legionnaire wants to take him with them, they literally have to drag him kicking and screaming.
  • Deuteragonist: The story is as much about him as it is about Ezra.
  • Disappeared Dad: While it's been confirmed his mother has passed away, there's no information about his father. Though given the circumstances, you can probably hazard a guess...
  • Doom Magnet: Due to him being targeted by demons his entire life, the people around him often end up hurt or dead. His family was killed when he was only 12.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He shows up at the end of episode 3, though he doesn't get a speaking line. Several following episodes have him appearing in the background until his official debut in episode 10.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: He has some pretty prominent shadows under his eyes.
  • Goth: The gloomy type. He wears all black, down to his accessories, he's constantly frowning and he's pretty anti-social. In episode 10 he looks downright disgusted by Ezra's hyper-positive attitude.
  • Heroic BSoD:
    • He has a flashback when he sees the mark on a demon's forehead. Shortly after he flies into a rage and demands to know why the mark is "following" him wherever he goes.
    • Ezra's continued prodding about demons causes him to have a Freak Out. Once Ezra is gone, he has a panic attack that lasts several hours.
    • When the spider demon who tried to kidnap him severely injures Ezra, Sunny panics and mentally begs for not another person to die because of him.
  • Ironic Name: He's a goth with a bad attitude who dresses all in black and he's named Sunny.
  • Living Macguffin: For some reason, a high power among the demons really wants to get him into her hands and she'll keep sending demons after him until she has what she wants.
  • Magnetic Plot Device: He's sought after by demons and Gabriel wants Ezra to watch over him. Whether he likes it or not, Sunny gets a lot of attention from both sides of the conflict.
  • Nephilim: Belial confirms to him that he is this in episode 46.
  • Noodle Incident: He admits to Ezra that he's on his fourth transfer in episode 11, but doesn't elaborate on it further.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has this reaction when he notices his knife is still missing and he's defenseless against Andras in episode 18.
  • Perpetual Frowner: He's not much for smiling. Given what's been shown about his past life, you can't really blame him.
  • Plagued by Nightmares: He has recurring nightmares about his deceased family.
  • Red Herring: From episode 3 on it's heavily implied he's some sort of demonic Big Bad. But in episode 12 it's revealed he's just a normal kid and that he has no idea why so many demons are after him. And while he does show some darker powers in episode 13, it's only when he's on the breaking point due to suffering from a Heroic BSoD. He doesn't even seem to notice he's doing it and he collapses from exhaustion right after.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: Not intentionally. He knows about demons and even alludes to having killed some in the past.
  • Seen It All: His reaction to the demon in his apartment (immediately running for a weapon and striking the second he has it) already clues you in that this is not his first rodeo. Once he drives the demon off, he even admits this isn't the first time he's been ambushed by supernatural entities.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Resorts to a variety of swear-words whenever he's angry.
  • Super-Empowering: Part of his supernatural powers is to boost a demon's manna. The Armless Demon takes advantage of this and almost manages to kidnap him in episode 28.
  • Survivor Guilt: It's implied that he blames himself for his family's death. One reason why he is so adamant about Ezra not getting close to him is the fear that he might die as well if he associates with Sunny.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He's just as tall as Ezra, has dark hair and is a pretty handsome guy. And even though he can be snappy at times, he's fully capable of being nice and polite. Episode 11 has him thanking a teacher and tell them he really appreciates what they've done for him. And despite his annoyance with Ezra following him, he gives the latter a chance to explain himself, even if he's being a tad bit rough about it.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: Has those whenever something triggers his Heroic BSoD.
  • Tragic Keepsake: The knife he uses to defend himself originally belonged to his mother and was wielded by his big sister for a short time.
  • Trauma Button: Demons and people getting too close to him. His Survivor Guilt and lingering PTSD make him push away others. Just mentioning demons is enough to send him into a serious panic attack.
  • Troubled, but Cute: An attractive Goth with some serious issues.
  • Weirdness Magnet: Apparently all sorts of weird things keep happening around him. And he's sick to death of it.

     Sunny's Mother
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sunnys_mom.PNG
Sunny's mother. She died when he was 12.
  • Education Mama: Implied. She seemed very concerned for Sunny's grades at age 12 and encouraged him to take school seriously. Sunny wants to graduate in the present mostly because it's what she would have wanted.
  • Mama Bear: She was willing to face down an entire horde of demons to protect her children. Unfortunately, she didn't survive the ordeal.
  • Missing Mom: She was murdered by demons when Sunny was still a child.

     Lily
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lilly.PNG
Sunny's older sister.
  • Aloof Big Sister: Sunny describes her as being incredibly arrogant and stuck up when she was still alive, even admitting that he hated her for it. However, she still loved him enough to face down an entire demon horde to protect him and presumably die in the process.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Like Sunny's mother, she is presumed dead after the demon attack. Unlike Sunny's mother, her body isn't shown and the dialogue we hear when she goes to defend Sunny from the demons suggests she was taken, rather than killed. It's later revealed that she was indeed kidnapped, but died anyway when the ritual to make her a vessel for another powerful demon failed.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She was shown to be protective of Sunny before her alleged death, speaking up for him when their mother criticized his average grades. She also attempted to defend him when the demons came for him, but failed.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: She didn't die the night the demons kidnapped her, but was instead brought to their hideout and put through a ritual meant to make her a vessel for her father. It failed and she died shortly after in a hospital, when her own powers ran haywire and tore her apart from the inside.
