Major Characters

    Amy Grimm
  • Affectionate Nickname: In addition to Amy being short for Amethyst, her brother and his friends also call her ‘Aimes’.
  • A Friend in Need: When Amy thinks Keri is in a dilapidated house, she can’t bring herself to leave him there, not even for the span of time it would take to go get Remmington.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Amy throws a full-on temper tantrum at Ash because he never told her he would be executed if she died.
  • Bad Liar: Whenever Amy tries to lie without her spell, Liar’s Lilt, she tends to be immediately caught.
  • Best Friend Manual: Her suggestion to Remmington that he should stop calling Ash ‘Dresden’ because Ash hates it.
  • Blood-Splattered Innocents: In her Flashback Nightmare, Amy is sprayed in either Lainnies’s or Connador’s blood, when Ash hits the guard’s jugular with a throwing knife.
  • Crush Blush: Amy cheeks “burned” after she got caught staring at Ash
  • Constantly Curious: Amy, as usual, has questions.
  • Description in the Mirror: Used twice, once when she’s focused on her new hair in the beginning of the book, and then again later on as she notices how tired and worn out she looks.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Amy has a very brief Imagine Spot of doing a quick Scar Survey on Ash before going even lower, once she realizes he’s naked and trapped in bed.
  • Everything's Better with Sparkles: The green glittery dress.
  • Fatal Flaw: Loyalty. Even after Amy learns that Ash will be killed if she dies, she can’t stop herself from entering a dilapidated house to look for Keri. She also puts herself in danger to rescue her bodyguard.
  • Guile Hero: Amy’s most-used spell is Liar Lilt, and she’s not afraid to use it on her allies, enemies, or innocent bystanders.
  • First Girl Wins: Ash shares a goodbye kiss with Capricorn, as they’ve both fallen in love with other people, leaving him open to get together with Amy in the epilogue.
  • Inconvenient Attraction: When Amy stops steadfastly denying her feelings for Ashling, she acknowledges them as immoral due to her being his boss.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Amy dithers between not wanting to let anyone take Ash away from her and wanting to give him up for his own good. In the final chapter, she lets him go so he can be promoted.
  • Lap Pillow: Amy encourages an exhausted Ash to lay his head in her lap and sleep in the back of the car while Keri drives.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Early conversations between Ash and Amy have them light-heartedly arguing with each other.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Ash admits that he can longer handle the idea of living without Amy, as she accepted him when they first met.
  • Love Makes You Dumb: Anytime Ash is in trouble, expect Amy to behave irrationally; from running toward a dangerous situation to smacking Princess Capricorn.
  • Must Have Caffeine: Amy is thrilled when Remmington gives her a latte. Ash teases her about a caffeine addiction in the same scene, but nothing ever comes from it.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Discussed. Remmington questions where Amethyst got her name when no part of her is purple.
  • Parental Abandonment: Amy was roughly five when Stephan Grimm was killed and Michelle Grimm agreed to let her be trained as an Ambassador for the Faerie Mound. She moved into the Mound at fifteen; seemingly emancipated, but still on good terms with her mother.
  • Pinocchio Nose: Amy tilts her head whenever she uses Liar’s Lilt.
  • Running Away to Cry: After a fight with Ash, Amy hides in the bathroom to cry
  • Significant Green-Eyed Redhead: Amy’s red hair is brought up more than once, but when talking about her name, Remmington comments that her eyes are ‘a polished jade or maybe peridot’.
  • Skewed Priorities: Ash teasingly, and then more seriously, accuses Amy of having them, especially since she proves willing to actively disregard her own safety to protect her bodyguards, when her death would be a massive diplomatically, and they'll likely be killed if she dies anyway.
  • The Social Expert: Amy’s diplomacy skills allow her to smooth over Remmington’s blunder with the front desk hotel staff, convince a bartender to rescue a missing guard, redirect several would be arguments between her companions, diffuse the tension in Cody’s compulsion, and figure out that Capricorn is trying to manipulate her.
  • Totally 18: The narrative points out several times that Amy moved to the Mound when she was fifteen and has been there for seven years, making her twenty-two.

    Ash Dresden
  • Affectionate Nickname: Amy started calling Ashling “Ash” within minutes of meeting him. He took it as a sign of their impending friendship, and so didn’t correct her.
  • Badass in Distress: Over the course of the story, Ashling eats poisoned flowers, gets hit with a sleep spell, pulls from the Fade, and then gets a spike shoved through his belly.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: A major factor in Ash’s devotion to Amy is that she accepted him when they first met, reasoning that his Half-Human Hybrid status would be a huge asset in guarding a human.
“In the seconds everyone else used to convince themselves that, despite my best performances, I would never be enough, you turned me into such an advantage that Michelle started asking about other half-human guards.”
  • Better as Friends: With Capricorn, as she’s more in love with Remmington and he’s more in love with Amy.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Anyone who speaks French will know that Ash sometimes intentionally mis-translates his own French for Amy to make it sound less romantic.
(You stun me, my other half.) “What?” “I said, 'You're dazzling.'.”
  • Blood-Splattered Warrior: In Amy’s Flashback Nightmare, Ashling is soaked in blood from his fight with Dresnik, either Lannies or Connador, and two unknown elves.
  • Bodyguard Crush: Doubles as Inconvenient Attraction; as Ash perceives being attracted to his much younger charge immoral.
  • Childhood Friends: With Capricorn
  • Cuddle Bug: Invoked and played straight; Ash is one in bed. Amy doesn’t seem to mind, but it’s why Cody won’t sleep in the same bed as him.
  • Devious Daggers: Subverted; Ash uses daggers as his primary weapons but he’s a Magic Knight, not an assassin.
  • Driven to Suicide: When Amy is infected with necromagic, Ash asks Piper to execute him.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Ash is not only visibly stunned by Amy’s appearance in the Hell’s Vestibule chapter; he tells her so. He has an even stronger reaction to her wearing his night shirt in a later chapter, doing a full on Double Take.
  • Everything Sounds Sexier in French: Conversational; Ash wears a shirt that reads “Merde sounds better in French.”
  • Fairy Sexy: Amy consistently refers to Ash as ‘pretty’ and he is an apparent favorite with teenage girls.
  • Fantastic Arousal: When sharing secrets with Amy, Ash reveals that his ears are ‘sensitive’ to the touch, but not in the way she previously thought.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: With Remmington, complete with Remmington calling him Ash.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: The only one seen in the story, but not the only one of his kind. In fact, fairy hybrids are apparently common enough to warrant their own species title: ‘Fair’
  • Heroic RRoD: Ash pulls from the fade to teleport Remmington to safety and immediately passes out.
  • Immune to Mind Control: Ash is immune to compulsion thanks to his father being compelled for ‘a significant amount of time’.
  • Instant Waking Skills: While both Amy and Remmington can be startled awake remarkably fast, Ash’s assessment and reaction is even quicker. Particularly notably when Amy screams Remmington’s name, and Ash grabs her to roll them both off the bed.
  • Intimate Open Shirt: Amy unbuttons Ash’s shirt in her Erotic Dream and he rolls his shoulder to display his torso without removing said shirt.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Early conversations between Ash and Amy have them light-heartedly arguing with each other.
  • Logical Weakness: Ash’s hearing means he can be staggered by loud or shrill noises.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He’s tall, lean, and has blonde hair that reaches his shoulders which he wears back in a ponytail.
  • Magic Knight: Ash wields both magic and daggers evenly, versus Remmington who defaults to the sword and Keriagon who defaults to magic.
  • Nepotism: Discussed as being a criticism of Ash by both Remmington and Capricorn at different points.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Cody teases Ash about him not complimenting Amy to which Ash asks, “how long before I live that down?”
  • Parental Abandonment: After his mother died, Perrault “disappeared” for about fifty years, leaving Ash with Piper.
  • Pointy Ears: Ash and his father, Perrault, both have long pointed ears and excellent hearing.
  • Poirot Speak: Ash’s habit of putting adjectives after nouns speaks to his french heritage.
  • Power Dynamics Kink: In the epilogue, Ash flirts with Amy by telling her that he is hers ‘to command’.
  • Precocious Crush: Ash has had feelings for Capricorn since he was a toddler when they were heartlinked.
  • Rank Up: In the last chapter, Piper tells everyone that he’s going to promote Ash to his apprentice.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Ashling hit his 260th Birthday sometime in the last 7 years, but his age is "more commensurate" with Amy’s 22.
  • Significant Name Shift: In the second to last chapter, Remmington calls Ashling “Ash” the same way Amy and Cody do, which snaps Ash out of his crying.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Ash has a harder time talking to three teenage girls than he does blind fighting in the same chapter.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Amy compares Ash and Perrault, noting that Perrault looks like a faded-photocopy of Ash. Piper also comments that he looks like his father.
  • The Lancer: Remmington internally refers to Ashling as his lancer.
  • Thought They Knew Already: Ash was young enough when his mother died to have forgotten her name. It doesn’t help that his father hates talking about her.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Amy and Piper
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Ash and Cody are constantly at each other’s throats verbally, but Cody defends Ash while he’s unconscious and is willing to punch Piper to save his life.
  • Wife Husbandry: Downplayed; Ashling has been Amy’s guard since she was emancipated at fifteen, so while he didn’t necessarily raise her (considering her more like a sister than a daughter); he still made the distinction of her being a ‘teenage child’ when they first met.
    • Made slightly less creepy by the fact that he was infatuated with Capricorn throughout Amy’s teenage years.
  • Your Favorite: When Ash is unconscious due to pulling from the fade, Amy says they need to get him ice cream because it’s his favorite.

    Remmington
  • Baritone of Strength: Remmington is The Big Guy of Capricorn's team of guards and a Magically Inept Fighter with a deep voice
  • Bodyguard Crush: Remmington has one on his charge, Capricorn
  • Bully Turned Buddy: For Ash, although the latter tended to view Remmington more as a rival since Remmington never set out to seriously injure him, unlike some of the other guards.
  • Carpet of Virility: Remmington, in his one shirtless scene, has chest hair complete with a line of abdominal hair.
  • Childhood Friends: With Keriagon
  • Fire-Forged Friends: With Ash, complete with Remmington calling him Ash.
  • Heel Realization: Related to Bully Turned Buddy, Remmington teases Amy about bullying Ash when the latter was a kid, but he is also struck a couple of times by the realization that he was, both intentionally and unintentionally, a jerk. It gets to the point that he has a Guilt-Induced Nightmare.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Remmington’s preferred weapon is a sword.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Keriagon
  • Lantern Jaw of Justice: When teasing Ashling about Remmington, Amy mentions his "strong jawline".
  • Legacy of Service: Remmington’s father is Lord Ingry’s favorite servant; and Remmington refers to himself as a ‘servant elf turned trainee’. He also shows deference towards Keriagon.
  • Mage Killer: Of the magic resistant variety
  • Magically Inept Fighter: Remmington doesn’t have much in the way of castable magic, but he is immune to most things.
  • No-Sell: When Kaynick swung a fire whip at Amy, Remmington caught it and proceeded to yank Kaynick to him, causing Kaynick’s death. Also, his immunity to iron lets him rip open Capricorn’s cage.
  • Pseudo-Romantic Friendship: Remmington grooms Keri while he is unconscious, and takes ahold of his hand when Keri starts to apologize for doubting him. They also share a bed from the time Keri is picked up onward.
  • Red Herring Mole: Remmington is set up in the prologue as a traitor and throughout the narrative, he disappears to call Captain Piper or makes weird facial expressions when Amy talks about magic. Turns out he was just a Magically Inept Fighter who reports in regularly because the last two guys disappeared.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Remmington is five hundred and seventy-four years old. How old he looks isn't specifically stated but he presumably looked to be in his late teens when Ash looked like a seven year old and Ash ages at twice his rate.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Yes, Remmington would like to fight one spiny lever machine, please.
  • Standard Hero Reward: Zigzagged; Remmington is given the chance to court Capricorn at the end of the story; but it’s because she wants to marry him and his recent heroism is a convenient excuse for the courtship.
  • Stout Strength: Remmington is specifically noted to not have a six-pack, although he does have “defined shoulders and arms”
  • The Big Guy: He’s the biggest guy both on Amy’s team and in Capricorn’s guard.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Princess Capricorn, Keriagon, and the guard

    Giselle
  • Bilingual Bonus: Some of Giselle’s pet names for Amy are not traditional English or American ones. Particularly noticeable is ‘my little cabbage.’
  • Cursed with Awesome: Not from Giselle herself, but becoming a revenant is supposed to be a curse.
  • Dream Walker: One of Giselle’s abilities as a revenant is to enter the dreams of those who summon her.
  • Friendly Ghost: Giselle is nothing but helpful throughout the novel, mostly to Amy, but to Cody and Remmington as well.
  • Long-Lost Relative: Revealed to be Ash’s mother, which Stephan knew, but died before he could surprise her.
  • The Lost Lenore: To Perrault, who went searching for her after her death, only to be told that her book had been destroyed. His absence correlates directly to Ash joining the Guard.
  • Monochrome Apparition: Giselle is a silvery monochrome
  • The Nicknamer: Of the cute variety, as Giselle knows everyone's names, but rotates through an endless supply of pet names for them anyway.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: Revenant's are cursed, dead humans.
  • Parental Substitute: To Amy and Cody, who treat her as a beloved aunt, and possibly to Stephan as well.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: The picturesque young noble woman, with artful curls and a fancy dress full of bows, but turns out she’s responsible for protecting Capricorn from Sepia for a couple of hundred years, and she saves Amy’s life by running to Price Echalson for help.
  • Spirit Advisor: To Amy and Cody, predominantly, but Remmington also receives advice when he summons her.

    Keriagon
  • Affectionate Nickname: Keriagon allows Amy to call him “Keri”, because he understands nicknames to be a sign of affection among humans.
  • Childhood Friends: With Remmington
  • Dying Alone: Discussed, had Amy and Remmington not come to his rescue, he would have died in a basement, thinking Remmington betrayed him.
  • Gentleman Snarker: Keriagon is the son of a Fairie Lord, and will absolutely cut people to shreds with a word or two.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Amy describes Keri as a sweetheart, but he puts every other character in their place at least once, even Princess Capricorn.
  • Healing Hands: Keriagon specializes in healing magic; to the point that he can heal without leaving scars. He also figures out that there’s something still wrong with Amy after Capricorn had healed her (twice).
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Remmington
  • Platonic Kissing: Keriagon has a mind-reading ability that utilizes kissing.
  • Pseudo-Romantic Friendship: Remmington grooms Keri while he is unconscious, and takes ahold of his hand when Keri starts to apologize for doubting him. They also share a bed from the time Keri is picked up onward.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Keriagon is five hundred and seventy-two years old. How old he looks isn't specifically stated but he presumably looked to be in his late teens when Ash looked like a seven year old and Ash ages at twice his rate.
  • The Red Mage: Keriagon’s specialty is healing, but he also displays defensive magic (wards and shields), infiltration magic (getting through someone else's wards), and offensive magic (causing a landslide on Ringalay).
  • Recruitment by Rescue: Amy and Remmington locate Keriagon and patch him up with Ash’s help before he joins in the party
  • The Reliable One: Keriagon is given the least amount of focus of the six heroes, as he fills a utilitarian role: setting up safe zones and reading instead of engaging in relationship drama.
  • Spock Speak: Keriagon speaks far more formally than the rest of his friends.
  • The Stoic: Keriagon is, by far, the calmest of the heroes. He is also said to have a lot of micro-expressions rather than out right ones.

    Cody Black
  • Abusive Parents: Cody's father give him a 'bone scar' (broke his arm) at some point, leading to his mother finally divorcing him.
  • Affectionate Nickname: In addition to Cody being short for Dakota, Amy and Tyler occasionally call him ‘Cotes’.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Punches Piper, then tries to start a fist-fight with Ashling when the latter asks to be killed.
  • Audience Surrogate: Even more so than Remmington or Amy
  • Big Brother Instinct: His hatred of the fey stems from this.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: His need to go help whatever security guard may have been injured by the shadow is what gets him compelled.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Cody and his mom, Michelle, were both physically abused by his biological father, Michael. After a stint in jail, Michael got paroled and immediately killed Cody’s step-father, Stephan, to “reclaim what was his.”
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Cody has a small scar running through one of his eyebrows.
  • Harmful to Minors: In addition to spending the first couple of years in his life in an abusive household; Cody saw Stephan Grimm's body, who died protecting the rest of his family, before they zipped up the body bag.
  • Fighting from the Inside: While he’s compelled, Cody tries really hard not to think about the fact that Ash is in the room behind him.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: He met Ash when he was nine, and while he technically remembered the meeting, he didn’t remember who he had met.
  • Friends All Along: When Keriagon realizes they’re being followed by someone; he tries to lead the group away. Once Ash realizes who Keri is steering them away from; he starts to laugh.
  • Hot-Blooded: Cody is the loudest and brashest of the protagonists by a wide margin. It’s probably easier to count scenes in which he doesn’t start some kind of argument.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: When Ash starts to tell him about the blood binding, Cody stops him and sends him back to the mini-bar for alcohol.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: After Ashling asks Piper to be execute him, Cody tries to start a fight with both of them, screams at Ash, and finally breaks down sobbing when Ash hugs him.
  • Informed Attribute: Cody is said to hate the Fey for ‘kidnapping his sister’; but his legendary Irrational Hatred is only shown through some antagonism towards Ash and his habit of going out of his way to learn about and exploit a couple of their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Magical Accessory: Cody wears a bracelet that grants him strength when he’s protecting someone else.
  • Mind-Control Eyes: Amy notes that his pupils dilated like Capricorn’s when he was compelled.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Zig-zagged as Cody will actively come between Ash and Amy if Ashling is the implied pursuer, but seems perfectly content to let Amy pursue him, even going so far as to lash out at Ash when he accidently hurts Amy.
  • Spanner in the Works: Cody manages to save Amy from the shadow with a lucky text message, led the other heroes almost immediately to Capricorn because he understands how credit/debit cards work, almost starts a fight that puts Amy in danger but draws Kaynick out of the shadows, and convinces the party not to give up despite being outmaneuvered and 'out of time'. He also sucker punched Piper to save Ash’s life.
  • Successful Sibling Syndrome: Cody fully believes that he’s just Amy’s ‘screw-up’ older brother, and everyone knows it.
  • Technically a Smile: Although several characters smile for less than altruistic reasons, Cody is easily the worst offender
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Cody seems to have shades of this with his human friends, considering that all of them (save Tyler) sided with Big John; the guy who is engaged to Cody’s ex-girlfriend and agreed to become his handler without asking him about it first. Then again Cody hasn’t told his other friends that Big John never spoke to him about becoming his handler before accepting the position.
  • They're Called "Personal Issues" for a Reason: When Keriagon is checking Cody over for injuries he mentions some “bone scarring” that’s so old it wasn’t healed by magic and says Cody may not even remember the injury. Cody very sharply replies that he does, and once Amy confirms it was from his father, no more is said about it.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Ash and Cody are constantly at each other’s throats verbally, but Cody specifically tries not to think about Ash being in the room behind him while compelled, which allows Ash to save him.
  • We Need a Distraction: Remmington breaks up a fight between Cody and Ash by suggesting Cody be a distraction.
  • What the Hell Are You?: Cody gets one from Remmington, when he pulls a knife one Remmington and snarls something about his immunity before Remmington can choke him out
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: Cody isn’t thrilled by his ascension to Elder, as he knows his best friend and mother will grow up without him.

  • Peerless Love Interest: Ash has been in love with her since he was a child and her guard, Remmington, also has feelings for her.
  • Pretty Princess Powerhouse: She can match her grandmother for magic and while she’s been trained to run from combat; she holds her own in the final fight against Mistletoe.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Capricorn's current age isn't discussed, but she looked like a preteen when Ash was a toddler, and like a fourteen year old when he looked to be about seven, and he ages at twice her rate.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: She took up traveling as a Princess Incognito because she was compelled to believe that her inability to choose between Ash and Remmington meant she was indecisive and would therefore be an ineffective leader.
  • Shipper on Deck: Her first response to seeing Ashling’s reaction to Amy wearing his shirt is to argue why the two of them should sleep together.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Once out from under the Compulsion Spell, Capricorn is eager to be helpful and make new friends, but she's not afraid to pull rank.
  • True Blue Femininity: The first outfit Capricorn wears after her compulsion is broken, one she bought from a store, is blue striped shorts and a matching halter top.
  • Unwitting Pawn: To Sepia

    Captain Piper
  • Adaptational Heroism: To the stories where The Pied Piper of Hamelin is a villian who drowns or otherwise harms the children of Hamelin. Ash doesn’t go into why he stole them to start with, but acknowledges that they lived to adulthood.
“You remember Humanity? That little town half a day’s ride from Père’s, where everyone seems to be at least part human?” “That’s them!?” “It’s their descendants anyway. The original hundred-thirty are all long dead from old age.”
  • Artistic License – Military: Piper’s official title seems to be ‘Captain’; while both Giselle and Perrault refer to him as ‘Guard Marshall’ with no clear indicator as to why.
  • Big Good: Piper serves as both Mission Control for the heroes and as the main deterrent for the Big Bad.
  • Confirmed Bachelor: Piper masquerades as one; using his infertility to put off potential suitors.
  • The Consigliere: Quietly corrects Queen Mabrieen’s terminology in front of her Ambassador and a guard; and suffers no effect from it; he's also known for being able to instruct both Princess Capricorn and Prince Echalson.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Although Piper presents a consistent jovial personality, other characters' reactions to him indicate that he’s not to be taken lightly.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Piper’s preferred weapon is a sword.
  • Lady and Knight: Piper is Mabrieen’s lifemate, but they’ve kept their relationship secret so he can serve as her guard marshall instead of a protected consort.

  • Parental Substitute: He’s Ash’s godfather and took care of him for about fifty years after Ash’s mother’s death.

    Prince Echalson
  • Immune to Mind Control: Echalson is immune to compulsion thanks to Mabrieen being compelled.
  • Inter Generational Friendship: With Perrault, whom he was heartlinked to
  • Just in Time: When Princess Capricorn and Queen Mabireen run out of magic, Prince Echalson rushes in to save Amy from Nercomagic.
  • No Social Skills: Much like his godfather, Echalson only bothers with things that bother him. This includes sharing information from Giselle.

Fairy Guards

    Illaca
  • Amazonian Beauty: Tall, Muscled, and Curvy
  • Half-Identical Twins: Discussed and subverted; Amy thinks to herself about how the media tries to do this with Illaca and Lyon; due to their similar features, but Illaca is bigger than Lyon all the way around.

  • Hero of Another Story: Illaca and Lyon were dispatched to pick up Tyghanaire.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Lyon’s dress tunic for the Hallow’s Eve ball has a plunging neckline by virtue of being a replica of his sister’s.
  • Tentacle Hair: Like his sister, Lyon’s hair is a collection of prehensile tentacles, albeit his are shorter.

    Tyghanire
  • Animal-Themed Superbeing: He's an ambush specialist; with stripes like a tiger; a guttural growl so deep it has a physical effect; and very sharp, very pointed teeth. One of the humans even referrers to him as a 'cat-man fairy'
  • Hero of Another Story: Tyghanaire was the first one sent to find Capricorn and dispatched two of the traitors in the guard before he was captured.
  • Post-Injury Desk Job: The epilogue notes that he retired from active service due to the stress of the injuries he sustained.

  • Epic Flail: Dresnik carried a morning star as his standard weapon.
  • Evil Former Friend: Of Remmington’s, but interestingly not of Keriagon's
  • Faux Affably Evil: Dresnik, despite trying to kill Amy, is consistently described as “polite” or “friendly” in her dreams
  • Posthumous Character: Killed by Ash before the start of the story, but Amy has several nightmares about him.

    Ringalay
  • Bully Brutality: Ringalay apparently tried to kill Ashling more than once when they were trainees together.
  • The Heavy: Ringalay appears in the prologue and is the most consistently seen antagonist.
  • Killed Offscreen: She may have died when Cody shot her or she may have been killed by Keriagon dropping a hill on her.
  • Loves the Sound of Screaming: Openly admits that she wants to hear Keriagon scream
  • [[Sadist]]: She tortures Keriagon in the prologue because she can.
  • Villain Ball: If Ringalay would have just killed Amy, instead of needing to taunt her, Sepia would have won.
  • Villainous Crush: On Keriagon; To the point where she keeps him alive because she wants to torture him more.

    Kaynick

    Tomadial

Fairy Elders

  • Mayfly–December Romance: His wife has been long dead by the time the story starts.
  • Minored In Ass Kicking: When he comes into the final fight, he negates Mistletoe’s Mirror Images, giving Piper an idea of where she is and a way to fight her without having to fight her copies.
  • No Social Skills: Discussed and Played Straight; to the point that Amy thinks Perrault hates her while he believes they have bonded nicely.
"Why are you lamenting at me? I am positive I did not misread anything."
  • Pointy Ears: Perrault and his son, Ashling, both have long pointed ears and excellent hearing.

  • The Heavy: As the shadow she has the most interactions with the heroes.
  • Leaking Can of Evil: Due to Sepia slowly freeing her from her prison
  • Living Shadow: The heroes continually have to deal with her shade. They don’t know exactly what it wants, but they work under the assumption it’s hostile.
  • Tom the Dark Lord: Mistletoe is a pretty non-indicative name for someone who so very completely Mind Controlled Perrault.
