Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Full disclosure, I believe this following entry needs to be rewritten.

  • A View to a Kill: Max Zorin is by far one of the most psychopathic villains Bond has ever come across. A French-German microchip tycoon who used to work for the KGB after he and his mentor, Dr. Carl Mortner, real name Hans Glaub, were whisked out of defeated Nazi Germany by the Soviets, he goes rogue to pursue his own plans for domination. His plot involves triggering an earthquake to flood Silicon Valley so his tech company can get a monopoly on the world's supply of microchips, killing millions of people in the process. He drops a businessman to his death when the latter disagrees with Zorin's plan, throws a captured spy into an underwater fan to be ground to mush, and kills the San Francisco mayor before blaming Bond for the murder and leaving him and Stacy behind to die in a fire. He's so psychotic that he gleefully machine guns his own mine workers to death and betrays his lover and henchwoman May Day, all of whom were nothing but loyal to him. When his plan is eventually foiled, he goes berserk as he tries to hack Bond and Stacy up with an axe in a fight atop the Golden Gate Bridge.

I think this would work better.

  • A View to a Kill: Maximilian "Max" Zorin, the former KGB operative in charge of Zorin Industries, presents himself as an affluent and fashionable indivdual, but is in truth a vicious, greedy psychopath who will do anything to further his own gains. Abandoning the KGB in order to pursue his scheme to submerge Silicon Valley and monopolize the global microchip supply, not caring that his plan will cost millions of lives, Max proceeds to involve his investors in his scheme, having a detractor ejected from his airship when the latter refuses to co-operate. When James Bond and Stacey Sutton go to San Francisco city hall to investigate, Max kills a city official and a CIA Agent, framing Bond for the murders before setting the building on fire. After placing explosives along the Hayward and San Andreas fault lines, Max floods the mines where the explosives were placed, proceeding to gun down any fleeing employees, despite their loyalty, driven by a combination of resource disposal and schadenfreude, and allows his mistress May Day to die in an explosion alongside his remaining employees. When Bond sabotages his plot, Max attacks Bond and Sutton atop the Golden Gate Bridge with an axe. Despite his civilized facade, Max makes his mark as a particularly vicious individual.

Yes to Faust. Another for the "this is a YA novel?" category.

I'm fine with the rewrite; it DEFINITELY flows better IMO.

Going to do a favor for a French friend of mine.

What's the work?

Un futur d'enfer is a French-written Code Lyoko fanfiction co-written by a friend named Cyclope and his ex-girlfriend Vivi.

The story is set in the Grand Finale, Season 4, in episode 93. It starts in a case of For Want Of A Nail, as it turns out the Lyoko-warriors lacked a precious information to free William from XANA's control. They promptly fail. Worse, Yumi (Cyclope's favorite character, and The Protagonist of the story), after being devirtualized... Vanishes. And to top it off, XANA-William kills Franz Hopper before Jérémie can even think of launching the multi-agent program to destroy XANA. And XANA later succeeds in taking over the world.

But a century later, Yumi reappears out of nowhere. Turns out, after her devirtualization, Yumi was sent in the future thanks to a glitch caused by the Kolossus. A Bad Future.

Do I really need to say who's our candidate?

Who's XANA? What has it done?

As mentioned before, XANA starts by killing Franz Hopper before the multi-agent program can even be launched.

A week later, XANA starts its attack, slaughtering millions of people in only a few days. The whole world declared war against it. But on top of summoning it's army, XANA also brings the brainwashed William on Earth. XANA-William is every bit the Juggernaut he was on Lyoko and slaughter 10 soldiers per day. Oh, and he also attacks the factory, killed every soldier out there and deleted the multi-agent program. Oh, and XANA also recreates each and every one of its monsters on Earth.

Later on, XANA captures 20 soldiers as hostages. As an adult Ulrich try to rescue them with his commando and Odd, XANA interrogates each soldier on their base's location, killing anyone who doesn't answer. While the remaining living soldiers are freed, XANA does everything to try and prevent their escape, killing 7 soldiers on the meanwhile. Ulrich, Odd, their commando and the remaining living hostages manages to escape, but it's clearly bittersweet. He was promoted to major as a result.

Learning the location of a XANA-held factory, Ulrich, Odd and their team are sent to destroy it. Turns out? It was a Batman Gambit. XANA lured them here, while placing tons of explosives in seemingly-harmless boxes. Kankrelats fired on some of the boxes, killing several soldiers. Oh, and they also damage a bomb's timer, forcing Ulrich to detonate the bomb manually. The factory is promptly blown to smithereens, but Ulrich died as well.

Meanwhile, Odd got slightly luckier, notably in the girls department, rekindling his relationship with Samantha and marrying her. This allows him to move on from Ulrich's death. However, XANA attacks a base... Turns out Jérémie, Aelita, Odd and Sam are in this base. Odd and Sam are killed in the following takeover, while Jérémie and Aelita manages to escape.

Upon capturing one of XANA's robots, the Resistance tries to reprogram it to infiltrate yet another XANA-held factory. The first attempt ends badly, with XANA retaking control and killing 4 soldiers before being stopped. The second was successful, but XANA, being suspicious, founds out easily, but Jérémie activates the robot's self-destruct sequence, wiping out the factory with no human casualties for once.

Sadly, XANA-William attacks the base soon after that victory. An adult Hiroki tries his best to fight but is completely outclassed and killed, with XANA-William sardonically telling him to say hi to his sister Yumi for him. XANA-William also slaughters several soldiers in the meanwhile. However, when Aelita badly wounds XANA-William thanks to an experimental weapon, XANA-William wisely decides to flee.

XANA goes even further by spreading a new, deadly virus (appropriately called the Eradicator) in the resistance, killing soldiers and civilians alike, Aelita included. Oh, and Alexandre, Aelita and Jérémie's child? Was merely a kid as he saw his mom kick the bucket.

Jérémie continues his and Aelita's work, trying to find a cure for the Eradicator. Oh, and it later turns out Alexandre is affected as well. But fortunately, for some unclear reason, the disease doesn't affects him at it should and takes much more time to have any effect, implying that Alexandre is the possible key to get rid of the virus. However, his body, so far, can only slow down the virus' progress. Alexandre is consequently put in stasis until a cure can be found based on his DNA. Jérémie, as for him, finally kicks the bucket thanks to the Eradicator, but having created an hologram to guide Yumi in their attempt to pull a giant Return to the Past (powerful enough to bring back the dead as well, averting All Death Is Final unlike the normal Return to the Past) and wipe out William and XANA's memories, thus preventing the Bad Future from happening in the first place.

Alexandre is finally put out of stasis, as a cure was finally found against the Eradicator, eliminating the disease. Yumi reappears a few moments later, as Jérémie's hologram has her use the CD to pull the Return to the Past. However, they need a nuclear pile powerful enough to make the time jump. With Yumi and a team, Alexandre infiltrates a XANA-held factory where they manage to retrieve a pile. However, on their way back, they're attacked by XANA-William, an army of robots, and a Giant Mook directly controlled by XANA itself. However, thanks to an experimental weapon built by Jérémie? They manage to temporarily free William from XANA's control. The commando and William proceeds to fight XANA (who slaughters the whole commando in the meanwhile), and the good William proves to be just as much of a Juggernaut as his evil self, defeating XANA... Who sadly manages to regain control of William a second before the latter kills the Giant Mook. However, William and Alexandre gave enough time to Yumi to bring back the pile to the factory and launch the giant Return to the Past. On the meanwhile, they also found the required information to free William from XANA's control as well.

Which leads us to two endings. The good ending, who was voted canon by the fans, and the bad ending. Let's deal with the latter first.

In the latter, the program has a glitch, and when Yumi goes back to the past while the Lyoko-warriors free William like canon? XANA remembers everything from the Bad Future, and William (who's merely feigning to be freed from XANA's brainwashing) as well. XANA-William later kills Yumi and makes it look like an accident. XANA can try again this time, and no one will stop it.

In the good ending, however? The program works, Yumi is sent back in time, is the only one who remembers anything from the Bad Future, and the Lyoko-warriors saves William like canon.

Is the fanfic schlock?

While it's quite dark, it still retains a lot of elements from the original series, and has plenty of plot. The heroes, even in the Bad Future, still manages to gain a few victories despite XANA killing pretty much anything living. Add to that a few happy moments that aren't always Hope Spots, such as Odd reuniting with Sam and moving on from Ulrich's death, or the infiltrated robot plan's success. On top of that, it isn't particularly gory or anything.

Heinousness?

Sole villain. Some could argue that William is a villain as well, but he's brainwashed by XANA to begin with, and XANA is the sole responsible for the crimes William commits under his control.

As for the rapsheet... Well, XANA indiscriminately kills millions in a few days, and then proceeds to kill countless soldiers on-screen to take over the world. Civilians aren't spared as well, as Aelita and Jérémie can sadly attest to. Add to that the whole Eradicator sickness that is nasty as fuck:

"Headaches, fevers, strong coughs at first, the most affected and the weakest even spit blood. Then, the entire body weakens, until death. Some were able to last longer than others, but generally those affected survived only one week."

Generic Doomsday Villain issues?

None. Ruthless, mocking, smart and ruthless as it always was. It's the XANA from the show.

Freudian Excuse? Mitigating factors? Redeeming qualities?

404 not found. Taken seriously start to finish. Not a shred of good in it. No Freudian Excuse. As for William, while it seems affable to him as XANA-William ? He has no problem trying to kill him the second William was freed from his control.

Verdict?

It's XANA. What do you expect?
