Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

'Yes' to Jeanne, Mireau, and Attila.

Now, for my second and last Bombshells baddie...

Who is he?

General Anton Arkayn is a Communist general in charge of the military aspect of the Soviet Union, and the Starter Villain of Supergirl's arc.

What has he done?

Bearing no relation to his sorcerous Post-Crisis counterpart, this Anton Arkayn rules over parts of Russia with an iron fist, forcing anyone who speaks against the communist rule to be thrown into concentration camps where they are starved and put through terrible conditions.

Upon discovering the existence of Supergirl and her sister Stargirl, Arkayn forces the two to become propaganda symbols for the Soviet Union, promising to target their loved ones if they refuse...though Supergirl and Stargirl do indeed become Arkayn's mascots, they also simultaneously thwart his military's efforts to slay enemy troops, as the sisters don't want to just murder people.

To combat this, Arkayn orders the sisters to personally massacre an entire "enemy camp". Of course, as the sister's hesitantly approach, they quickly realize it's one of Arkayn's concentration camps, and he's decided to start cleaning house by killing off people in said concentration camps.

When the sisters (rightfully) freak and refuse to harm the imprisoned citizens, Arkayn tries to just bomb the shit out of the camp, which the sisters thwart....in response? Arkayn marches to Supergirl and Stargirl's hometown, taking their parents hostage at gunpoint.

As the sisters arrive, Arkayn threatens to blow their parents' brains out, promising that, unless the sisters allow themselves to be dissected like lab rats so Arkayn can use their DNA in his war efforts, he'll kill their parents and their entire village.

The sudden arrival of Swamp Thing (get iiiiiiit?) leads to Arkayn's forces being disrupted, and Arkayn is killed by the Swamp Thing even as he screams for his troops to open fire on the entire village, though luckily Supergirl and Stargirl save the daaaay yaaaaay.

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming features?

Nah, Arkayn's a pretty cut-and-paste power hungry general, just wants to rule, yadda yadda.

Heinousness?

Though the story has its heavy hitters in heinousness, given Arkayn is the only CM candidate with zero unearthly powers or intelligence on his side, and he's a Starter Villain? I think he does enough. Running concentration camps, trying to wipe out said camps, threatening Supergirl and Stargirl's family...

Final Verdict?

Final Bombshells Keeper, at least for now.

Alright, so one more song candidate on my end. This one I could go either way with.

What is the work?

Celtic Frost was an extreme metal band much like Bathory that was founded by Tom Gabriel Fischer in Zurich, Switzerland. They were largely influential on the extreme metal scene, and also had some influences on black metal.

Who is the candidate? What has he done?

From their 1984 debut album Morbid Tales song Into the Crypts of Rays is Gilles de Rais. Gilles was a wealthy nobleman who was a marshal who became the personal guard of Jeanne D'Arc (Joan of Arc). He fought in the Hundred Years War alongside Jeanne D'Arc, which earned him the title of the Marshal of France. So, he would eventually retire from his military life and returned home. Remember how I said he was pretty rich? Well, as most tend to do with that large amount of money...he ends up wasting it on things like lavish parties. Being squarely up to his neck in debt, Gilles dabbled in dark magic and mysticism to accumulate riches.

In the song? To do so, he entices several children into joining his black masses, and sacrifices them to different demons among other things. By the time that he was arrested, he had robbed the lives of over 140 innocent children and was sentenced to hang. Of course there are now some accounts that state that he did not actually commit the crimes that were attributed to him, but in the context of this song, he is.

Freudian Excuse? Mitigating factors?

He was a wealthy nobleman who was largely better off, but because of his hedonism, he lost everything that he built up. Worse, he decides to sacrifice hundreds of children as a means of lining his pockets instead of...I don't know...make back his money through legal means?

Heinous standard

The album doesn't have a major interwoven story. In short, he sets it in what with sacrificing 140 children in ritualistic sacrifices.

Conclusion

Leaning towards a "keep" for Song!de Rais, but I'll leave it to you guys.

Since there haven't been any objections...

  • Paths of Glory: General Paul Miraeu is the opportunistic commander of the 701st regiment during World War One. When General Broulard offers Miraeu a chance at promotion and a medal in exchange for launching a costly attack on the German position known as the Anthill, Miraeu leaps at the chance despite knowing full well the mission is unlikely to succeed and will come at great cost. When inspecting the front lines Miraeu physically beats and insults a soldier for having shell-shock, and strong-arms Colonel Dax into going along with the planned offensive, threatening to fire him if he doesn't. During the assault on the Anthill, Miraeu observes thousands of his troops get slaughtered from afar, only concerned with the speed of their advance. When a group of soldiers refuse to participate in the hopeless assault, Miraeu orders his own artillery to fire on them, and then threatens to arrest and execute the artillery commander for refusing. When the attack on the Anthill dissolves after that, an enraged Miraeu tries to have a hundred men from the regiment tried for cowardice and executed, having to be pressured greatly by Broulard to reduce it to three men only. Shoving the three men through a show trial and watching them get Shot at Dawn, Miraeu gloats over their deaths and quips about how beautiful it was to watch. Having the gall to call himself "the only innocent person in this entire affair", Miraeu proves himself to be an unhinged and bloodthirsty Glory Hound only out for himself.

Slight pothole changes:

  • GoLion:
    • Emperor Daibazaal, the ruler of the Galran Empire, is a despotic conqueror, slaver and murderer. Seeking to expand his grasp across the Galaxy, Daibazaal conquers planets that will submit and destroys those that will not. The slaves taken are condemned to fight in gladiator arenas, or fed to the monsters on planet Galra for his amusement. Daibazaal has no hesitation at taking attractive slave women as concubines. One that he once favored once begged him to give better treatment to the slaves, for which he strangled her to death. Daibazaal and his son Sincline have a mutual loathing of one another and Daibazaal has no compunction trying to get him killed. Brutal, nasty, smug and cruel, Daibazaal is an example of an Evil Overlord at his worst.
    • Prince Sincline, Daibazaal's son and eventual leader of the Galran armies, is introduced presenting his father with the severed heads of the leaders of worlds he had conquered. Sincline spearheads the invasion against the planet Altea, guarded by the robot GoLion and its five pilots. Initially honorable and chivalrous, Sincline reveals his true colors when he cheats in single combat and develops a fascination with Princess Fala, one of the pilots. His obsession carries over to abducting her cousin, Princess Amue, who resembles her greatly and abusing—possibly raping—her. Sincline is notorious for his rage at subordinates and failure is usually met with swift and painful death. With no loyalty to his father, Sincline tries to assassinate him, before pulling a successful coup where he forces Daibazaal to fight the heroes with the promise he'll be restored to the throne if he wins. Naturally, Sincline sabotages his father and lets Daibazaal die before hemming in GoLion with innocent prisoners in exploding capsules. When Galra is besieged, the new King Sincline slaughters his own subordinates who wish to surrender and has no compunction trying to kill Princess Amue. When his grandmother, Daibazaal's mother and adviser Witch Honerva opposes him in grief over Daibazaal's death, Sincline viciously kills her. He later takes a hostage to ensure his escape from Galra and tries to kill the heroes with a bombardment, declaring that as long as he lives, Galra will never die.
