Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

As a previous post mentioned, the Ghostface ( Piper Shay) for Scream potentially qualifies because she's pretty much an Expy of Roman from the third movie. However, unlike Roman, Piper doesn't pretend to be the victim of the Parental Abandonment. While one of her victims was an Asshole Victim, she relentlessly killed Nice Girl Riley and set a refomed Will in a death trap that she made Emma trigger. She then sets another death trap for her mother's boyfriend just so she could relive the grief of having caused a loved one's death. The worst part was that she had no motive for killing Emma's friends. She just wanted to make her suffer.

Animeking: Earlier today I was writing an effortpost on Piper Shaw, but what stopped me is that the first season is over, and we might get a more evil Ghostface in the future. Also there's the cliff hanger regarding the second Ghostface ( possibly Audrey) so even with Piper's arc resolved, there's still more I think we need to know; like who killed who, and why - Piper's motive was obvious, but we don't know enough about the accomplice to get a full understanding of things.

I just checked out the Western Animation page, and Jenner's entry was fused into Megabyte's entry.

Reboot: Megabyte, an order-obsessed virus, becomes one after season 2. While in previous seasons Megabyte had a personal code of honor and was affable enough to give Enzo a birthday present, after a forced Fusion Dance, he loses those qualities, as shown when he uses an Eldritch Abomination's invasion as a way to trap Bob in an Eldritch Location. With Bob out of the way, Megabyte turns his attention on capturing Mainframe, with the end goal of infecting the Supercomputer and the entire Net. To that end, he lets his sister Hexadecimal get crushed with the side of a game cube, then has her rebuilt with a shock collar so she is forced to power his death ray. He makes it incredibly difficult for Enzo to continue beating game cubes, dooming thousands of binomes to A Fate Worse Than Death and causing untold destruction for the sake of driving the kid into a Heroic BSOD. When he gets into the Central Office, he decapitates Phong and tortures his severed head not only for information, but for his own sadistic amusement. His minions, Hack and Slash, are terrified of him, and he often breaks Herr Doctor's fingers as punishment. Even after being defeated, he's caused so much damage Mainframe can't recover and the heroes are forced to deliberately cause a crash for a chance at rebirth. Later, he returns to Mainframe and impersonates Bob, turning everyone against Glitch-Bob before proposing to Dot and almost marrying her for no reason other than to amuse himself. He is willing to hurt anyone and everyone for his own petty amusement.* The Secret Of NIMH: Jenner is a nasty, murderous piece of work. In contrast to his noble brethren amongst the rats of NIMH, Jenner desires nothing but power. When The Hero Mrs. Brisby comes to the rats for help moving her family and house to be safe from a farmer's plow, Jenner sabotages the moving so the wise and kind leader of the rats, Nicodemus is crushed to death, while the Brisby house (and the four Brisby children inside) are trapped and sinking in mud with Jenner not caring about the impending deaths of the kids. When he sees Nicodemus bequeathed a special stone to Mrs. Brisby, Jenner attempts to murder her for it. What makes it even worse is Jenner, like all the rats, owes his very life to Mrs. Brisby's deceased husband and the father of her kids and displays zero remorse or gratitude to Jonathan's memory. After his henchman Sullivan finally has enough with Jenner's lunacy, Jenner slashes his throat and attempts to kill his rival Justin, declaring his only philosophy in life: take what you can when you can.

Alright, both Cobra Commander and Dr. Mindbender have 6 [tup] votes, so here are the write-ups.

  • G.I. Joe: Renegades:
    • Adam DeCobray/ Cobra Commander is the CEO of Cobra Industries, a business organization he uses to cover up COBRA, a ruthless terrorist group. Using COBRA to manufacture everything from weapons to plagues, The Commander frames a group of soldiers who try to reveal Cobra Industries' true colors, sending them on the run for the rest of the series. When the soldiers, called "Joes," continuously meddle in his plans, The Commander has the leader, Duke's, parents kidnapped, offers a deal for their lives, then plans on killing them along with the Joes after the deal is through. The Commander takes no slight against him lightly, shown when he tries to bomb a college to kill one blogger who slanders Cobra Industries, feeds a possible whistleblower to his pet, Serpentor, and seals a metal mask onto James McCullen for leaking information about COBRA. Along with regularly attempting to starve, annihilate, and blackmail entire cities, The Commander has a lethal virus developed that he plans on spreading across the world, then selling the cure only to those who can afford it. After his plan to mind-control the entire planet fails, The Commander plans to use the M.A.S.S. device to transport his armies across the globe and Take Over the World. When The Joes interfere once again, he flies into a rage, brutally beats them down, then tries to drag Duke down with him when he falls over an edge. Cold-blooded and power-hungry beyond salvation, Cobra Commander once again proves himself to be far worse than his original counterpart ever hoped to be.

    • Dr. Mindbender is the young, sociopathic, top scientist of COBRA. Commisioned by Cobra Commander to build an army of Bio-Vipers, Mindbender happily tries to feed the Joes to them, and when one of his Vipers escapes and begins causing chaos, Mindbender goes to extra lengths to put civilians in danger. When the people of a town COBRA is plunging into a drought by building a dam begin fighting back against COBRA, Mindbender, along with The Baroness, pay Firefly to destroy the town and its inhabitants. Tracking down twin psychics, whom he located by torturing a fake medium, Mindbender captures and subjects the twins to horrific experiments. Later, The Joes accidentally release the powerful Electro-Viper onboard a ship, and Mindbender remotely targets it towards Destro's castle, completely aware of the destruction the creature would cause once it reaches land. After another of his Vipers escapes, Mindbender tortures a young boy for the Viper's whereabouts, and later tries to level Brooklyn, New York to act as a distraction while he flees The Joes. Helping build the M.A.S.S. device for COBRA, Mindbender nonchalantly tests it on COBRA's own soldiers, many of whom don't survive, and later tries to send Snake-Eyes through the machine in order to force his best friend to reveal the machine's secrets to Mindbender, then tries to kill them both once the device starts working. Doing everything for sick thrills, Mindbender may not have been as powerful or influential as his cohorts, but he far surpassed them in sheer monstrosity.

With the character now dead and new information having been revealed about him, I'm offering the character Felix from Red Vs Blue as an example.

Out of every character in Red Vs Blue, Felix is by far the most evil. A surprisingly realistic depiction of a sociopath, Felix originally seems like a Jerk with a Heart of Gold until The Reveal that he's a willing and eager accomplice to a plan that involves the mass genocide of an entire planet's population. While this alone would merely put him on equal moral ground with Locus, the Space Pirates and Malcolm Hargrove, multiple actions after this reveal place his selfishness and cruelty on a level far beyond theirs. In Episode 17, it is revealed that the purge to wipeout all life on Chorus, will also kill all the soldiers working for Locus and Felix. Something that Locus actually feels regret for. While Felix is perfecty willing to betray and murder his partners. Including Locus himself when the latter has a Heel–Face Turn.

While Malcolm Hargrove may have orchestrated the plan to kill the people of Chorus, Felix's execution of it puts him on a far higher scale of vileness than his boss. To Malcolm Hargrove, the people of chorus are nothing more than a statistic. A Few dots to remove for profit. Felix however, has lived with these people for months, if not YEARS and has come to know and be trusted by them. He doesn't have the excuse that Hargrove has of being distanced from his prey (I think that we can all agree that hiring someone to kill a stranger because "It's just business" is nowhere NEAR as evil as living with a man's family so you can kill them personally because [[Sadist it's more fun to watch how hurt your betrayal made them feel]].

And that's the worst part. Unlike Locus, who is just following orders, or Hargrove or the Pirates to whom it's Just Business. Felix RELISHES in the thought of betraying and murdering his former allies. Often continuing to act sympthetically in order to mock them. Any small Pet the Dog moments he gets are subsequently subverted or revealed to be examples of Pragmatic Villainy and he makes it clear that even after the mission is complete and he becomes "Filthy Stinking Rich", he makes it clear that he will continue to kill people simply for the thrill of it.

[up][up] Both are likely to count. But I would say the opposite: Hargrove is more likely than Felix. You see, while Felix may have sadistic about it and tried to have his own men killed, Hargrove did organize the genocide in the first place. Killing an entire population by itself is pure evil. It was Hargrove who decided to have the population be manipulated into killing each other. It was Hargrove who hired a sadistic mercenary and his empty shell of a partner to do it. It was Hargrove who made the declaration of war. It was Hargrove that decided that if Locus and Felix were to fail, he would send a new agent with the Meta's armor to complete the mission and kill the duo. And now Hargrove has personally shown up to kill at the planet to kill the people once and for all, even though there is no point.

But maybe both count. Tell you what, you do Felix and I will do Hargrove. Let's both wait for next week when the season ends to see what Hargrove does.

So I guess now's a good a tie as ever to bring up the latest Ghostface from MT Vs Scream.

Who is Ghostface ?

Piper Shaw, who is introduced as the stand in for Gale Weathers, but after The Rveal, has plenty of Roman Bridger influence (with a little bit of Cece Drake in there too). Years before the series, the town of Lakeview was terrorized by a serial killer named Brandon James, who was friends with Maggie Duvall, the mother of protagonist Emma, and had a sexual relationship with Maggie, that ended up getting her pregnant. The baby was Piper who was put up for adoption. At the time of the series, she returns as a copycat for the killings, while acting as a Gale esque podcaster and spends the season tormenting Emma, [[spoiler: her half sister, while befriending her in her civilian persona.

What does Ghostface do ?

The series opens with Ghostface killing local Alpha Bitch Nina (the same night she released a video of local teen lesbian couple Audrey and Rachel), and her boyfriend Tyler, who the police rule as the first suspect.

Come the second episode, Ghostface kills Rachel, who was vulnerable, dealing with depression and suicidal, and makes the murder look like a suicide.

The third episode, Ghostface, posing as Tyler tries to arrange a meeting with Emma and her friends, Brooke and Riley, setting up a sting operation with the local police. Using a hired pawn, and later Tyler's decapitated body as a decoy, Ghostface gets the three girls separated, and tries to force Emma to play a game where she chooses to kill her good friend (Riley) or bad friend (Brooke). Emma tells Ghostface not to hurt Brooke and tries to call Riley to warn her. However, Ghostface corners and stabs Riley, leaving her to bleed out.

Later this season, Ghostface ( as Piper) meets Emma's ex boyfriend Will and are attacked by Ghostface's accomplice. Will is kidnapped and used to lure Emma and her friends in a trap, but they mange to rescue him, but Will is kidnaped again, and this time put Will is a Jigsaw style trap which Emma accidently triggers while trying to save him, which gets Will sawed in half.

In the last few episodes of the season, Ghostface begins to fram Mr. Branson, a local teacher having a love affair with Brooke, for the killings and in episode nine, kidnaps Sheriff Hudson, who Emma's mother was having a relationship with, having him tortured on camera and playing it live at a local Halloween party. In the season finale, the deputies and Maggie find Hudson, but when they begin to cut him loose, it triggers a deathtrap that spills Hudson's guts. Ghostface also fakes Branson making an escape from police custody, killing a cop in the process, and attacks Brooke's party, killing one teenager and locking Brooke in a freeze which Ghostface stabs through repeatably, but Brooke manages to escape.

Ghostface contacts Emma again, having kidnapped her mother, demanding she comes to the same docks that Brandon James was shot years ago; warning Emma to come alone and not to tell the police or more will die. It is there where Piper reveals her plan, and motive; she intends to kill Emma in front of her mother, kill Maggie slowly and fram Branson for it before killing him too and coming off as the hero. Piper confesses to killing Emma's friends just to make her suffer. Of ocurse there's a showdown between her and Emma that culminates in Audrey pulling a Big Damn Heroes and shooting Piper off the dock. In classic Scream fashion, Piper rises from the water only to be shot in the head by Emma.

Redeeming qualities or Freudian Excuse ?

As far as an excuse goes, she has a similar backstory to Roman Bridger, in being put up for adoption as a baby and wanting revenge on her half sister for being raised by her - when Maggie tries to pull a Mama Bear to save Emma, Piper gives a sarcastic "Mommy, you broke my heart". In her everyday persona she fakes a nice girl persona who emphasizes with Emma and her friends, actually acting like a sister of sorts, but her true personality is cruel, sadistic and vicious. Also her father is Brandon James, who allegedly went on a killing spree before being shot. Piper claims that Brandon was innocent of the killings and wants revenge for his death; to her credit, the show does make it apparent there is more to Brandon's alleged killing spree then we know - however seeing as Brandon was killed in the early stages of Maggie's pregnancy, it's a safe bet that she doesn't know him let alone love him, and then there's the fact that despite believing that he is innocent but she still goes on a copycat killing spree anyway.

Heinous by the standards of the story ?'

The show is not connected plot wise the movies (they even have a different Ghostface costume ) so Piper doesn't have to compete with Roman Bridger or Jill Roberts. As the killer this season, Piper sets the heinous standard for now, however since this is the first season, we may get introduced to a more evil Ghostface down the road. Another issue I have concerning the heinous standard, is the cliffhanger involving the accomplice still being on the loose (who is implied to be Audrey). While Piper is clearly the mastermind here, too me it raises the issue of who killed who and why ?

"It's like...a cliff, and if I do it, I'm just gonna...fall." "I think we're already falling."

[up] sounds good. [tup]

Now, I'm aware The Beast was discussed back a little while, but it wasn't really an in-depth thing. So, here's an updated effortpost that elaborates a bit more.

Who is he?

The Beast is the main antagonist of the 2014 miniseries, Over the Garden Wall. He is a shadowy creature that haunts the woods of The Unknown (The realm that the series takes place in,) and has immortality as long as his lantern is lit.

What has he done?

The people of Unknown live in constant fear of The Beast, never wandering into the woods.

Before the series, The Beast powered his lantern by finding lost people in the woods (often children,) driving them to despair, sealing their souls into trees, then chopping them up and turning them into oil for his lantern.

At some point, a woodsman stole The Beast's lantern, and, to make sure his immortality continued, The Beast manipulated The Woodsman into fueling his lantern for him by cutting down the trees The Beast provides, lying that The Woodsman's daughter's soul resided in the lantern. He also conveniently left out the fact that the trees he was cutting down were people's souls

When Wirt and Greg, the protagonists, show up in Unknown trying to get home, The Beast begins stalking them, realizing they are potential victims.

He also has Adaleine, a witch that forces childrento become her servants, under his employ.

When Wirt starts to give into despair, The Beast makes a deal with Greg, Wirt's younger sibling, to do a few tasks for him in exchange for Wirt's soul.

However, The Beast was just using the "tasks" as an excuse to tire Greg into despair then do to him what he's done to so many other children.

When The Woodsman realizes he's been, effectively, murdering people's souls, he tries to save Greg, only for The Beast to pound him and taunt him about how his daughter's "life is at stake."

Wirt finds Greg close to becoming a tree, but The Beast gives him a Sadistic Choice; Watch Greg die, or become the new "Woodsman" and chop down trees to power the lantern, which he claims will have Greg's soul inside.

Wirt decides to Take a Third Option and realizes The Woodsman's daughter's soul was never in the lantern, and Greg's soul wouldn't have been put in it either.

The Beast then tries to manipulate The Woodsman once more, by ordering him to kill the boys and claiming they will turn into trees to power the lantern (Of which there was no proof of.)

But The Woodsman refuses The Beast and, as revenge for forcing him to constantly work and wander the woods in the false hope he was saving his daughter, extinguishes The Beast's lantern, ending him once and for all.

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming qualities?

This is the reason he was originally ruled a 'cut,' the fact that his lantern was the thing keeping him alive. However, I don't think this "excuse" holds up for one reason.

Immortality Immorality. He wants to stay alive, yes, but that "life" entails trapping souls, pushing people over the Despair Event Horizon, killing them after trapping them, and just loving what he does. Seriously, If he was only doing it to preserve his own life, there would be no reason for him to be as sadistic and twisted as he is about it.

No, really, he laughs about it. He sings about it.

Heinousness?

Sets it for the series, and is effectively a Serial And I Must Scream-er/ Serial Killer Knight of Cerebus.

Final Verdict?

I'd say he's a [tup]
