Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

My second and last candidate from Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes

Who is Mole Man?

Mole Man is a hideous man, who resented "pretty people" for looking down upon him and not recognizing his talents. Creating himself a home underground, Mole Man created himself his own minions, "Moloids". Debuting in "Molehattan", Mole Man kidnapped The Thing and tried to convince him to help him build a "paradise" underground, where people are not judged by their looks. As he brought Fantastic Four's base underground (since it is The Thing's home), he decided to cast out or enslave everyone inside of it. This led to The Thing turning on him and Mole Man attempted to kill him and his friends. But he was defeated and forced to retreat.

In his next apperance in "De-Mole-Ition", Mole Man kidnapped the egg of an unknown giant lizard monster to lure it outside of its cave, as he took control of the rest fo her eggs (which is hundreds) to make them think that Mole Man is their parent (since the creatures "imprint" on anyone they see first upon birth) and lead them to destroy "the surface world" and humanity. Fantastic Four thwarted his scheme by bringing the egg back and making all newborn monsters to "imprint" on their true mother, after which they capture and throw Mole Man to prison.

In his final significant apperance (the rest of his apperances are cameos), in the episode "The Cure", when The Thing was turned back into a normal human, Mole Man created a devise, with which he planned to erupt all volcanos on Earth, which (as explicitly stated in the episode), would destroy all life on the surface of the planet. Fantastic Four decided to replace Ben with She-Hulk for this mission (since Ben is no longer The Thing and all), but they got captured and Mole Man tied them up on his devise. As he planned to activate the machine, Ben arrived on the jet and foiled Mole Man's scheme, with Reed and the rest destroying Mole Man's machine, only for Mole Man to escape.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

His excuse for people not accepting him because he's ugly doesn't hold up and is not used by the show as a legitimate reason to commit any crimes (as The Thing attested) and his "care" for "Moloids" is pretty much just "for show" as portrayed in the cartoons, as in while he pets them and calls them his children, he has zero problem to curse them and sacrifice them for a chance to kill off Fantastic Four. Also, while he has several humorous scenes, his crimes and when his attempts to destroy humanity twice are portrayed deadly seriously.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Tried to destroy humanity twice, along with the rest of the life on "the surface world", such level of attempted bodycount is exceeded only by Doom (when he almost destroyed the entire universe).

Final Verdict?

What do you think?

Sure to Mole Man. ALSO Paul Dobson. Though that's not even the first Marvel cartoon with two CMs played by the same guy; Robin Atkin Downes played both Annihilus and Abomination in Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H..

I think I may have just found my next CM. As soon as the two-week restriction passes by, DuckTales (2017)'s final Big Bad is going straight to hell... by which I mean the monster prison.

Very well, I'll just continue looking for other things to do, and I'll see you on March 28th.

Yes to Vile's duo and Space, I could swear we've talked about this before but please don't pour out any more detail than "I look forward to discussion on X." Giving the candidate's position in the story is inevitably going to spoil bits of the work for people and this is Scraggle's to talk about. The mods tend to thump these comments when found so I'm gonna give a friendly suggestion as Sky did to blank that bit. We look forward to your contribution to discussion when Scraggle does his thing come the date!!

To get them out of the way:

Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes:

Victor Von Doom aka Doctor Doom is the archenemy of Fantastic Four, who lacks the redeeming qualities of his original comic counterpart. Responsible for the incident, that led to Fantastic Four getting their powers, Doom later on switched bodies with Reed Richards to ruin his reputation, to the point of deciding to overload the power core of Fantastic Four's base to destroy evething within several city blocks. Afterwards framing Reed for supposedly "experimenting on his friends", Doom tried to use his inventions to unleash the energy of the Negative Zone upon New York, which threatened to kill thousands of lives. In his most ambitious scheme, Doom stole Annihilus' power source and brought it to Earth, which threatened to destroy the entire universe, solely so he could use it to conquer and destroy everything he sees. Despite losing the way of controling the power source, Doom still clinged to it, not caring that it was close to wiping out all life in the cosmos.

Mole Man is the short hideous man, who resented "pretty people" for looking down upon him. Building his base underground, Mole Man created "Moloids", whose sole purpose was to serve him. Regularly plotting to destroy "the surface world", Mole Man tried to take control over the army of monsters, so he could lead them to wipe out humanity. After being thwarted, Mole Man created a device, which he planned to use to erupt all volcanos on Earth, fully ready to destroy all life on the surface of the planet over a petty revenge.

[tup] to Doom and the Mole Man. Alright here's Koval's write-up

  • Outside the Wire: Victor Koval is a Russian Warlord who invades Ukraine, creating a civil war in the country and killing thousands; there are countless corpses and mass grave seen throughout and one incident where Koval plants a dirty bomb in Kiev killing 25,000 people. When the United States deploy peacekeeping forces in Ukraine, Koval plots to use nuclear missile silos to nuke America so that they could no longer interfere with his conquest, uncaring if he kills untold millions. In his pursuit to find the codes to activate the silo, Koval has his men shoot Captain Leo and Lt. Thomas Harp when they deliver vaccines to refugees and when they enter a hospital, eventually holding everyone in a bank hostage and attempting to kill them when they escape, leading to numerous casualties. When Koval meets with Leo to retrieve the codes, Koval tries to kill Leo so that he can steal the codes for himself.

Also, this seems to be a little bloated, so i try to trim this one:

The Original:

Agents of Mayhem: Dr. Babylon, real name Osman Timur, is the ruthless and ambitious head of the Ministry of Pride within L.E.G.I.O.N. (League of Evil Gentlemen Intent on Obliterating Nations) and the mastermind behind their operations in Seoul. In charge of mastering dark matter for L.E.G.I.O.N.'s weapons, Babylon takes part in their numerous attacks, such as the worldwide attack known as "Devil's Night". One of Babylon's achievements is mixing dark matter with a weaponized virus that was loosed onto India, infecting and killing countless innocents, with children and babies being seen among his victims. When Babylon learns that one of his scientists is also working with the Ministry of Greed, Babylon kills said scientist and enslaves his daughter Ariadne with a microchip that drives her insane. Babylon seeks to extract a giant dark matter crystal for its power, and sends his lieutenants to distract M.A.Y.H.E.M. (Multinational AgencY Hunting Evil Masterminds) from his operations, causing trouble for both M.A.Y.H.E.M. and Seoul. With his plans finally ready, Babylon launches a final attack on the city and on M.A.Y.H.E.M.'s Ark. When he gets his hands on the crystal, Ariadne tries to drive Babylon insane as revenge, resulting in Babylon deciding that since he has the ultimate power in L.E.G.I.O.N., he should rule the whole organization and usurp Morningstar, the head of LE.G.I.O.N. Babylon then goes on a final rampage to destroy and rewrite reality in his own image.

My rewrite:

So I brought the guy up for a cut on the MB thread and I've actually brought him up for a cut here before, but High Commander Khashoggi should probably be cut from CM. Full disclosure, as I've admitted on the MB thread, my original read on the character was based around the script I was given and he was both more competent and serious there, if still pretty campy. However, most variations on the script have this stuff:

  • Khashoggi's very first scene features him exclaiming "God, I hate hippies!" as he has a resistance member brought to be brain-drained. He interrogates the leads by locking them in cages, with jokes made about how he doesn't understand the lyrics of old pop music. There is a scene in which he calls his boss while she gets a bikini wax, etc, etc. He's absolutely Played for Laughs for the most part. Even the scene where he enters the resistance base before murdering one of their members and capturing the rest to be murdered has a few jokes, opening with "And now, Mr. McCartney, you say goodbye and I say hello."
  • Khashoggi kills a fairly limited number of people, and while the way he does it, brain-draining, is harsh, it's also very campy and isn't elaborated on in any detail beyond the fact it's basically deleting someone's soul. There's no indication that they're in a Fate Worse than Death afterwards or anything, so they may as well just be dead. Oh, and just to note? Even the scene where he commences the torturous execution of the rebels has multiple jokes, with him declaring that he will send the Resistance to a place where they will never know individuality and one responding "You mean Euro Disney/Disneyland?" only for him to respond "You wish!" Even his death has him comically scrambling to suck up to his boss before promptly being brain-drained himself.

Overall, the version of the character featured in most scripts is 80% jokes, he never really gets serious enough to keep, and while it's unfortunate to see him go, I was operating on a different version of the script. Too much of his character is Played for Laughs for me not to argue for him to go. Even though the show itself is light and campy with a low heinous standard I don't think his one really bad deed is enough to offset how comically he's treated.
