So Bad It's Horrible Cleanup

Go To

So Bad, It's Horrible is one of the more flame-bait-y parts of the site, so a cleanup thread is needed to ensure that works aren't added simply because someone doesn't like them.

If you want to list a work under this, keep the following in mind:

  • The work must have very few fans or defenders (both genuine and ironic). It should fail to appeal to any type of audience.
  • Being offensive in its subject matter isn't enough.
  • It isn't horrible just because a certain critic disliked it, though their reviews can be used as sources and citations.
  • The work should have notably poor reviews (e.g., less than 3/10 on IMDb, or single digit scores on Rotten Tomatoes)
  • Please be polite while writing and as much as possible, avoid falling into Complaining About Shows You Don't Like. Instead, focus on explaining why the work is horrible.

I don't think a soundtrack that mainly uses stock music can be considered horrible.

Hi. I'm here because I think Resident Evil Survivor doesn't fit the criteria to fit So Bad It's Horrible.

Sure, the game's not a masterpiece, but I have played it myself. At worst, it's just mediocre and at best, it's a weird and short experimentation that is more fun with the Japanese and European versions due to being able to actually shoot with a light gun. Also, I think the description for why it's here feels too harsh for a PS1 game of its time and overexaggerate minor issues present in other games in the series on the same console to make it sound worse than it actually is.

To c/p it to show what I meant.

  • Resident Evil: Survivor was released very late in the Playstation's life (by which point, Code Veronica was already released on the Dreamcast and the PS2 was months from release) and had a very unique premise: Resident Evil as a combination Survival Horror and First-Person Shooter. In practice, however, this early attempt at melding the two genres was a bit too ahead of its time.note  The game was originally developed to be played with a light gun accessory, but the functionality was cut out of the North American release due to backlash from Moral Guardians involving guns and video games. As such, the game retains the series's tank-style controls, with the gun being operated by holding R1 and moving crosshairs over your target and pressing X to fire. This works out fine enough in the main series games, but in an FPS setting, is overly convoluted. The puzzles are overly simplistic, and many of the enemies are too easy to be scary (especially the Tyrant "Mr. X", who goes from an Implacable Man in Resident Evil 2 to a large, slow, lumbering doofus here). The story is bogus, the graphics are ugly, the character animations are janky, the music is a cacophonous mess, and even by the standards of the main series games, the voice acting is godawful bordering on Sensory Abuse. A look at the credits reveals the reason it seems like an Obvious Beta: it had no testers or quality assurance. Its one saving grace is its brevity: this game can be beaten in under a day. The Angry Video Game Nerd tore into it like a hungry zombie, and he isn't alone: the game holds a paltry score of 39 on Metacritic.

Also, I've seen people who like the game, so shouldn't that be a big red flag to cut it?

While one person's opinion doesn't really affect much, I've heard a few people enjoyed the story or at least found parts of it scary. It also has a few positive tropes on its pages. The Nerd hating a game isn't enough for it to qualify. Resident Evil Survivor could probably be removed.

I'd second cutting this game. It has roughly a 4/10 on pretty much any review site, which isn't GOOD but isn't nearly SBIH tier. Most criticism of it seems to be that it's simply unremarkable and not really worth playing.

One that could possibly be added, and sourced:

As for the issue of it staying true to the source material, well, it's Loose Canon at best. It can be completed in an hour, and has a plotline that has little exposition or Back Story. There's little to no replay value either. This review highlights many of its flaws and says it's an awful game. The plotline made little sense, and even if it is a kids' game, it still got poor reviews.

although it tried to glamorize its protagonist (who you barely got the chance to play as - Miley was the actual player character)

Thus makes it sound like Hannah and Miley aren't the same person. Plus, Miley gets way more screentime as herself, so it's accurate to the movie.

Personally I kind of wish you would slow down a bit proposing new SBIH entries, if only because several of them seem to be based purely on one or two reviews with the general public finding them So Okay, It's Average.

[up][up] Judging from the context, I assume these are video games. It would be helpful to know which systems these are for as sometimes a game will release on multiple systems and some versions will be significantly better than others.

As for Car Trader Simulator, since when has Writing Around Trademarks been a negative?

[up][up] Writing Around Trademarks being a negative, probably not.

In general, these were games that from when I'd done the research for this page, they recommended to avoid.

The Mr. Bean 2007 game was notorious for a weak storyline and got 1/5 at the time, so it could qualify for SBIH.

Revised version:

  • Car Trader Simulator, an obscure Simulation Game for Nintendo Switch and Microsoft Windows, a game that is about exactly what is stated, launched in 2019, and got poor reviews for its old-fashioned graphics (and not Retraux in this case), weak plotline and unengaging gameplay. The photos were taken from real salvage car websites, being possible copyright infringement, there's little character interaction or potential for deciding what, and the soundtrack is like a 1980s video game, and not in a good way. It's endless clicking picture after picture, sort of like one game in a mini-games-focused game. One reviewer gave it the lowest score of 1/5 and this review shows, in-depth, how bad it is. BBC's The Social Gaming show had a reviewer test it, and he did not enjoy it at all. Although it sounds like a So Bad, It's Good game, it's far from it and doesn't even try to make the topic sound as exciting as you'd think. Very Honest John's Dealership in terms of what it offers
  • Mr. Bean, a licensed platformer for Microsoft Windows and Nintendo Wii (Mr. Bean's Wacky World was the Wii title) based on the British show was released in December 2007 to cash in on the show's popularity then (with its Animated Adaptation). The game had several glaring flaws; a villain who kidnapped Mr.Bean's teddy bear, but never appears in the game, and we don't know his motives (making him possible Generic Doomsday Villain with no backstory or origin) other than him demanding 1,000 cat biscuits and the protagonist looks zombified with an unchanging facial expression. Gameplay was simple, with him collecting cat biscuits or using three types of weapons, and the music is annoying. Boss battles were with creatures like bees and Fake Difficulty was a common problem. The minigames are whack-a-mole and a jigsaw which was relatively easy to do. Cutscenes, when they do appear, are recycled Stock Footage from the show. Graphics were of poor quality for the time, with it having jagged pixels at times and odd character designs.
As for the issue of it staying true to the source material, well, it's Loose Canon at best to the show. It can be completed in an hour, and has a plotline that has little exposition or Back Story. There's little to no replay value either. This review highlights many of its flaws and says it's an awful game. The plotline made little sense, and even if it is a kids' game, it still got poor reviews.

Two more examples from the video games page:

  • 3D Ballz for the SNES and Sega Genesis. The setting of the game is pure gibberish with nonsensical phrases and weird photos, but what makes the game bad is the controls - it's so slow, slippery, and unplayable that you'll have no idea how to control your fighter. The AI, however, has no problem controlling its fighters and will wipe the floor with you. The music and sounds are strange, almost erotic, with girls moaning and guys grunting.

The general consensus of this game seems to be it's So Bad, It's Good at worst, and it also has a version on the 3DO that's fairly well-received.

  • Tattoo Assassins is what happened when some people at Data East got the mistaken idea that they could compete with Mortal Kombat with half the budget and one-third of the development time of a typical arcade Fighting Game. The result was nearly unplayable, with poor moves, Artificial Stupidity, and an annoying parrot. The pointlessly hyped story (what with its loose connection to Bob Gale) fell flat. The game was also hyped to feature more Finishing Moves than any other fighting game, but that was because management threw in every idea they could think of regardless of how bad they were. It never went past the beta phase because they couldn't find testers who could bear to play it. If you really want to, you can find more information about this game on I-Mockery or watch Retsupurae riff the arcade mode here and the Fatalities here. For the record, Data East executive Joe Kaminkow defends the game, noting that people are still talking about it all these years later. An insider account of the game's development can be found here.

Both the game's page here and the Angry Video Game Nerd's look at it acknowledge it has a cult following and it's also generally seen as So Bad, It's Good.

I was going to mention Tattoo Assassins myself. I managed to encounter a physical cabinet myself by accident (it's at Game Galaxy in Smyrna TN) and decided to play it. While I'm not very good at arcade fighting games, I thought the controls were fine and less clunky than say, Primal Rage. The rest of the game is considered So Bad, It's Good. I'd probably remove it from here.

Not sure about the other one though.

Yeah. As for Ballz, well, it isn't entirely seen as So Bad, It's Good because it's a little obscure, but its YMMV page on here calls it that and lists the 3DO version as a Polished Port, so.

The Music entry is becoming a disproportionate Wall of Text, mostly due to being updated during the height of its backlash. Is there a way to trim it down?

This example under Advertising seems like it's complaining more about the advertiser itself than about the ads. It's also close to being a Wall of Text.

  • Many of the ads for RockAuto are often poorly animated (with faces taken straight out of the Uncanny Valley) with dialogue that sounds like it originated from a radio ad. Given the infamy of the business' delivery of cheaply-made auto parts, the quality shouldn't come off as surprising. Some of their most infamous ads include:
    • Their garage sale advert features a man whose car's window got skewed in an impossible way and having to sell his action figures and letting others rent out his dog just to pay for a replacement.
    • Another advert, in addition to having terrible animation (it features talking 3D animation heads, horribly drawn, whose jaws move like cows chewing cud whenever they speak) also tries to present your typical commercial auto parts store as bad because it does not comply to some pretty outlandish requests, such as a woman needing high-technology ceramic brake pads for her Toyota Prius or a Greaser getting angry at the store clerk for not having parts for a Ford car from 1949. It's like a shuttle bus company trying to badmouth the competition by saying they can't drive you to Fiji. It also features a ridiculously stereotypical Frenchman.

[up] The first sub-bullet at least can go, since it doesn't even describe why the ad is bad. Don't know about the rest, and I'm not sure if I would call it a Wall of Text.

Agreed on the RockAuto re-write as well.

I agree that the Music entry is getting really bloated and rabbit-trail-y, too (much like how the entry for the original Sonic movie trailer), and is probably in need of a rewrite.

troperaiser cut the link to a Cinematic Excrement video on the Jem and the Holograms entry, though this seems to be less out of bias and more because they were expanding the entry to include two reviewers. Should the review link be re-added since the rule is not to cut working review links without consensus?

  1. If they’re “troll” levels, then they can’t count as SBIH, since they were meant to be unplayable and annoying.
  2. I don’t think we can count user-created content in a game itself as SBIH.
  3. Super Mario Maker and its sequel have very little quality control when it comes to user levels, so you can’t really designate specific levels as SBIH when there’s no real standards.
