Unreleased Work Page Cleanup (Speculation, Spoilers, ZCE etc.)

Go To

This is a thread for checking up on pages for works that have not been released yet, to make sure that they are not straying into rampant speculation or posting crazy behind the scenes spoilers. You can bring both individual examples or entire pages to attention here.

In extreme cases, any page can be locked, but hopefully that won't be necessary.

(As these pages often are hit with zero-context examples and shoehorning as well, all four - speculation, spoilers, ZCEs, and shoehorning may get addressed simultaneously.)

The policy governing this effort is Creating A Work Page For An Unreleased Work. Cleanup is being tracked using the Unreleased Works sandbox.

All pages for unreleased works should include a %% comment at the top of the page, confirming the policy and linking to this thread and the Administrivia page. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the example provided here, but this provides a template to work with.

Template for the unreleased work comment

%% Speculative troping is not allowed on TV Tropes.

%%
%% For unreleased works where all we have to go on is advertising and other supplemental materials, we have some detailed guidelines, which can be found at Administrivia/CreatingAWorkPageForAnUnreleasedWork.
%%
%% NOTE - these rules also mean that unreleased works should only have one page image, and that image should NOT be changed again until the work is released.

[up] Official trailers and CoroCoro magazine have confirmed most of those.

Magazine articles are not typically considered tropable.

If the tropes appear in a trailer, they need to specify that they appear in a trailer. We're not interested in what they "confirm" about a game that's not out.

I'd like to ask about Infinity Train. High Crate hid all the tropes. However, most of them were about the pilot that was released two and half years ago. Is it ok to restore the tropes about the short?

[up] That leads to another interesting question; what should we do we do with upcoming shows that have had their pilots publicly released? Twelve Forever was on the future works page originally, but was later removed because the pilot - not the show itself - was out.

[up] The pilot counts as an episode, so it's a released work.

Agreed. I must have missed that the pilot was released. If that's the case, then many of the entries can be unhidden.

Edit: Since it was my mistake blanking the page, I went through and un-hid many entries. I also gave it a thorough cleaning for shoehorning. There are several ZCEs still hidden that I can't help much with, not being familiar with the work myself.

Yes, once a work is released, it becomes this thread's responsibility.

General state-of-cleanup update:

The following pages from the first round of cleanup (6/6/19) still have fewer than 3 valid entries and have not had significant activity since initial cleanup. I recommend giving these a couple more days just to be safe, and then cutlisting:

The following pages from the first round of cleanup (6/6/19) still have fewer than 3 valid entries, but at least one troper has either been attempting to find citations and/or context for entries or has announced an intention to do so on this thread. I recommend giving them a little longer (say a week) before cutlisting, as it's considered bad form to cutlist something being actively worked on:

The following pages from the second round of cleanup (6/7/19) still have fewer than 3 valid entries. I recommend giving them about a week to let interested parties attempt to find citations and/or context for problem entries before cutlisting what remains:

I might be able to fix Batwoman but random question first; the character was initially introduced in a crossover (Elseworlds), could that count as citation? It's largely academic because I don't think that revealed anything the trailer didn't re-reveal but may as well establish.

I'm assuming that crossover took place in one or more of the existing Arrowverse shows? If that's the case, then it seems to me that any tropes that took place there belong on the work page(s) for those shows. Those tropes did not take place in Batwoman, because Batwoman hasn't been released yet.

I'd count it as a Poorly Disguised Pilot, but I'm waiting to see how it compares to the first episode before I write context for that trope. Much of the episode could be used for the page, but I am uncertain what would be just for the pilot and what would be incorporated into the new series.

Even then, though, Poorly Disguised Pilot should go on the work page of the show that the PDP was originally part of, not the show that spun off from it.

That entry could go up right now, since even on the off chance that Batwoman was canceled tomorrow, the PDP episode already exists, and the PDP trope explicitly does not require that the spinoff series ever actually see the light of day, just that the episode be testing the waters for a potential spinoff.

As we still have not gotten a clear answer from the moderation staff regarding best practices for handling pre-hidden trope entries, I have created a new thread laying out the scope of the problem as I see it and offering recommendations. Input is welcome.

Regarding the discussion about Yo Kai Watch 4 earlier, the game was released in Japan four days ago. There's gameplay footage of the game out, so anyone who wants to add tropes has references they can use.

I am intensely ambivalent about allowing unrestricted troping of a work when we all know full well that the vast majority of the troper base that will potentially be editing the page has never experienced because it is not available in their language or their home market.

That said, I can't think of any coherent policy to prohibit it that wouldn't have the consequence of making an English-language but still inherently international wiki into a de facto America-centric place, which wouldn't be okay.

Can we at least agree in principle that anyone who hasn't experienced the work has no business adding trope examples to the work page? It kind of has to be an honor-system thing, I have no way of proving who has and hasn't played the game. Just... can we please be cool about it?

Can't you tell something like Art Evolution just by looking at a game? Why would you need to play it first?

Hey what's the word on any official gameplay being revealed by the press? I'm seeing various youtube gaming channels allowed to stream Borderlands 3, specifically having to play as one particular character until Gearbox decides to release other characters to the press. I figure at the very least this should be more than enough documentation of this character's abilities between the numerous videos showing her off.

I think we should trope as normal for a released work if the channel is a Let's Play.

I should think that it would work the same as trailer footage or any other pre-release source. Entry text should stick to describing what happens in the material we have access to and refrain from speculating about whether and to what extent it will apply to the final work, and it should cite the source.

Well, I cleaned most of the game pages we have in the sandbox. Not sure if the rest have enough material at this point.

I am also interested in others' thoughts on the Indivisible and Kyle & Lucy: Wonderworld pages. Both are currently listed as "<3 tropes", though they actually have dozens right now, although they are sorted in a rather unorthodox manner.

[up] The folderizing on those pages was done after initial cleanup; I haven't had a chance to revisit either page since.

Putting a blanket "tropes present in promotional material" on a header or folder above the trope list is deprecated as a solution. It's been tried, and it causes more problems than it solves, as it's typically used as a way for people to try to trope the final work as if it were already out while paying lip service to the rules against Speculative Troping. The obvious temptation is for someone to change the wording of the header or delete the folder markup upon release, leaving us with a big mess to clean up as it's no longer clear what applies to the final work and what only applies to pre-release materials.

I motion that the most recent edits on both of those pages be reverted and cleanup resume from there.

I said I added individual citations to Kyle & Lucy here, I was told to folderize them instead, and was otherwise completely ignored.

Since I didn't get told otherwise, I assumed the same could be done for Indivisible.
