Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

I think this is the first keep of him from a more dark work? To my knowledge a lot of his incarnations have been from the more Silver Age-styled stuff.

I really think there's no harm in putting him up here now. While Brenner’s arc wasn't finished, we put him up over on CM when his actions were sufficient enough for it and then took him down when he got redeeming qualities. This is pretty similar.

We can always take this version down later if the situation calls for it and then add him to CM after that if the situation calls for it. No biggie.

Got a quickie, classic 90s flick example for us:

What's the work?

Heat is a kickass action-thriller directed by Michael Mann, with a star-studded cast portraying cops and robbers on either side of the law, Detective Vincent Hanna leading the charge against a gang of ruthless, efficient bank robbers headed by Neil McCauley. Guns blaze, tensions flare and Al Pacino hams it up in a classic crime flick, and while Neil himself is rightfully listed, I think one other character hits nicely as well.

Who is Nate? What makes him a candidate?

Portrayed by Jon Voight, Nate is Neil's personal fence and liaison for all things regarding his criminal enterprises. Nate has been with Neil for years and brokered information, stolen goods, and much more between Neil and other parties, assisting Neil in his prolific bank robbery career with great success.

In the film proper, Nate comes up with a clever scheme involving valuable bearer bonds that Neil has recently stolen: rather than sell them on the black market to strangers, Nate will offer to sell them back to their rightful owner, crooked businessman Roger Van Zant. Van Zant will pocket insurance money from the bearer bonds, get them back at a discounted price from Nate and Neil, and gets all parties' profits greatly expanded. The plan is a sound one that Neil agrees to... unfortunately Van Zant is a prideful douche who isn't the "businessman" that Nate and Neil are, and Van Zant begins working with Neil's treacherous former ally Waingro to wage war on Neil's gang.

Nate supplies Neil with contacts and schemes throughout the film, hooking him up with fellow criminals that have schematics for banks they can knock off while Nate uses his information network to help Neil keep tabs on the task force of cops headed by Hanna that are on his tail. Nate pretty quickly deduces Hanna's dogged, unfettered personality through basic information, and uses it to further advise Neil on how to handle Hanna's interferences.

When Van Zant and Waingro throw a major monkey wrench into Neil's latest heist, Nate sets Neil up with a brand new plan to flee the country with stolen funds and, using his information contacts, Nate tracks down Van Zant and Waingro and offers their locations up to Neil to take them both out. Despite this, Nate implores Neil to take the opportunity to use the escape route and get out while the getting's good, choosing freedom over revenge.

And though Neil dies in a blaze of glory with the cops after taking out Van Zant and Waingro, Nate himself is the only major crook to never face the slightest repercussions for his crimes. Even in the original script of the film where Nate is caught by Hanna, Nate smugly brags that the methods Hanna used to capture him won't properly hold up in court, and Hanna himself admits that Nate won't even face 2 years in jailtime before he'll be back out as spry as ever.

Is he magnificent?

For sure, Nate is a charming, Affably Evil crook who hooks Neil up with a lot of information, advice and schemes through the film while functioning as his closest, most competent confidant. He's much more behind the scenes than Neil himself, but Nate is a key component to Neil's success and implicitly supplies him with many of his marks and methods.

Is he a bastard?

Eyep, criminal who is helping Neil's gang setup and execute robberies including armed bank heists that get people killed, with Nate's only reaction to people dying in Neil's heists being casual Pragmatic Villainy eyebrow raising.

Final Verdict?

Yep!

Tonight I dine on monkey soup.

Bad Janet's writeup:

  • The Good Place:
    • Bad Janet is the Bad Place's version of Janet, the personal assistant for people residing in the Good Place. In Season 4, after being rebooted 40 million times by Shawn, she is able to perfectly imitate a Good Janet and swaps places with her, with no one in the Soul Squad being any the wiser. She spends months undermining the experiment in subtle ways, such as making the other humans doubt Eleanor's leadership skills and sabotaging attempts at group bonding activities. After being exposed as an impostor, Michael decides to release her after giving her his manifesto, which she reads and finds herself agreeing with Michael's points. When the Earth is faced with the risk of being rebooted by the judge, she gathers an army of Good, Bad, Neutral, and Disco Janets to help hide the Earth-rebooting remote. Even as her fellow Janets are marbleized, she refuses to give it up, defiantly farting in the Judge's direction when it her turn to meet the same fate.

Yes to Nate.

[up]I think they mean Joker.

I'm fine with Reevaluations as long as they aren't a constant thing I remember Scar and Syndrome being on and off the CM trope several times before we settled that yes, they were bad enough.

I want to put this in the CM thread too, but if Ghetsis gets Adaptational Villainy in Pokémon Masters (which has been shown to be Canon to the games), would we be able to Reevaluate him on that thread?

[down] Figured as much. I was asking because a lot of people don't treat Masters as Canon due to it not being a main series game and instead a Spinoff.

[tup] Nate.

One last (I believe) for Agents of SHIELD I dug up. The last two seasons of the show featured the Chronicoms, a race of alien robots, as the villains, and they... well, they sucked. Their homeworld was destroyed by an evil fear demon/Mayan goddess from another dimension (comic logic is always fun), and they now seek to use time travel to recover it.

Unfortunately, they go about this in the most Stupid Evil manner possible, violently kidnapping/threatening the only two people capable of providing them access to time travel (4 years until Endgame In-Universe) and then recklessly endangering their lives.

Now, I've already gotten up one Chronicom: Enoch, who isn't a villain like the rest but is easily the best character on the show, and goes about accomplishing his goals with minimal cruelties while also acting like he actually possesses a braincell. However, while I despise the rest of them, there's one more I think stands out on the "owning a braincell" front.

Who is Malachi?

The Hypercompetent Sidekick to the initial Chronicom leader, Atarah, Malachi is a "Hunter" assigned to capturing Fitz and Enoch, who have just recently accomplished a successful time travel mission and are currently separated from the rest of SHIELD in space. Malachi locates the ship they're traveling on and lies in wait at their next fuel stop, but instead unexpectedly runs into the rest of SHIELD. He's briefly detained, but when they arrive at the planet Fitz and Enoch have taken a detour to, he easily escapes and contacts the other Hunters, sending them to distract the SHIELD agents while he teleports in and escapes with Fitz.

Long story short, Atarah blunders about, almost melting Fitz's brain with a mind-reader device, and the SHIELD agents escape. However, Malachi managed to make a copy of Fitz's brain while he was in the device, uploading the memories into himself.

Atarah is convinced they have all they need to begin the plan to save their world, but Malachi points out she's missing an important detail: time travel is a bitch and tends to blow up in one's face. It's best if they establish a new homeworld in the present first, just in case something goes wrong. He proceeds to kill Atarah when she refuses to listen to basic common sense, usurping command of the Chronicoms for a full-scale invasion of Earth. Because fuck us in particular, I guess. Thanks to the memories he copied, Malachi has full knowledge of all SHIELD protocols, allowing him to easily predict the movements of the agents and massacre them. Additionally, he has the other Chronicoms across the cosmos reassigned to Hunters, removing potential allies for Enoch's resistance.

...Unfortunately, the one he sends after Enoch is an idiot and flat out tells him he's been reassigned, allowing Enoch to get the drop on him, kill him, and steal his skin to infiltrate the Hunters. He manages to rescue Fitz and Jemma as the SHEILD base is captured, going on the run as they set out to stop the Chronicoms' plans...

Which is just more time travel. Hooray. I'm not exactly sure how their hierarchy works, but Malachi gets replaced as the Chronicoms' leader by a lady named Sibyl, who decides to go into the past and destroy SHIELD to conquer Earth. No mention is made of trying to save their old world. She apparently has the power to control the other Chronicoms, so when we see Malachi again in the series finale he's just another brainwashed mook before getting forcibly reprogrammed by SHIELD to have empathy and give up the invasion.

Any mitigating factors?

The villainous Chronicoms, in my opinion, are absolute garbage. They're smug idiots who, even with the power to see every possible future, still manage to effortlessly screw themselves over. While the Season 6 ones are at least mildly sympathetic with a genuine desire to save their race, the ones introduced in Season 7 double down on being assholes, being more concerned with saving their race because they view themselves as superior and more valuable than humanity rather than any actual care for each other, while not even mentioning Atarah and Malachi's plans of saving their old world after taking Earth.

With that said? Malachi is an amazing breath of fresh air, with his competence making him stand out like goddamn Xanatos compared to his compatriots. He repeatedly proves himself to be far more intelligent than his superiors and pulls off the sole The Bad Guys Win finale in the entire series, which is only undone later by his successor's incompetence.

There is the issue that the Chronicoms, especially the S7 ones, follow your usual "humanity is inferior, machines are the future" stuff we get with robot villains. Malachi's not too bad in that department; he's a bit curt and remarks once that human tech is primitive, but Chronicoms are always curt to everyone and an admittedly true statement is nothing compared to the Sibyl regime's logic of "we deserve to replace you because we're better, bow or die." The worst is that he's disdainful toward emotions, which is pretty meh in comparison.

Then there's the matter of him getting Demoted to Dragon offscreen with little explanation, but I personally find that his sheer competence does wonders to make up for that, and his role in the finale is such a small cameo that I don't think the underwhelming ending is enough to undermine the rest of his coolness.

Verdict?

I say he's a yes, helped along by being so much more intelligent and sympathetic than the others.

[up]Yeah, he was totally set up as the Final Boss for the rest of the series at the end of Season 6 and they just totally threw it away—especially with the last minute save they did to get him to stop too. What the hell? I'm happy to say [tup] to Malachi though given he shows an intelligence and an ability to process things that Sybil and the other evil Chromicons in Season 7 clearly don't have.

Again, anybody willing to see an EP on Sandman? Despite that concern I brought up about him, there's a lot of other stuff that recommends him for this trope though.

Yes to Nate and Malachi.

Now one of two versions of Catwoman I have planned.

What is the work?

Batman: Hush is a very loose adaptation of the comic storyline of the same and is set in the DC Animated Movie Universe. It follows Batman, along with Catwoman, as he is swept up in the mystery of the new villain, Hush, and his plan that reaches as Batman says, "As high as Superman and as low as the Joker".

Now Hush here is not Thomas Elliott like the comics but actually the Riddler. He also does not count as he has a pretty humiliating break down at the end. Now, Catwoman on the other hand.

Who is Catwoman?

Selina Kyle a infamous former thief and an old flame of Bruce's, is introduced under the mind control of Poison Ivy to steal the ransom Bane wanted for a child hostage. Selina manages to break her brainwashing when Batman is shot down by Hush, using her impeccable skills with her whip and agility to dance circles around the thugs that try to kill the unconscious Batman and even Batgirl when she attempts to arrest her. Later after giving the money to Ivy, she teams up with Batman to track her to Metropolis and when the two are faced with a brainwashed Superman, she goes along with Bruce's plan to pretend to threaten Lois Lane, before she decides to actually throw Lois off against Batman's orders when it doesn't work at first. Her, Bruce, and Clark later capture Ivy and when the third up Ivy refuses to corporate at first, Selina actively threatens her life to get her to talk.

Later saving Bruce from Harley Quinn when she crashes her date on Hush orders, Selina is eventually told by Bruce his secret identity and the two become a crime fighting couple, though we see that Selina is okay with killing thugs unlike Bruce. Later when out on patrol with Nightwing, Selina saves him by defeating Scarecrow, using nose plugs to prevent Scarecrow's feargas from affecting her, before being captured by Hush. Hanging over a metal grinder as Batman fights Hush/The Riddler, Selina cleverly frees herself while hanging in mid air and saves Batman before the Riddler kills him. Later when an explosion leaves Riddler hanging over the previously mentioned and now on fire grinder, Selina actively cuts the line that Batman is using to save the Joker. Selina than parts ways with Bruce realizing that he is not ready to give up his vigilante life and that their morals will never line up with his no kill rule.

Smart? Charming? Can she think on her feet?

Yes. She is still Catwoman. She sultry, quick on her feet, and a master of using her whip in combat. She is also quite snarky, with Jennifer Morrison doing a decent job adding it some dry humor and one liners to the overly gritty New 52 style work. As for thinking on her feet she has that too. She comes up with the plan to put Lois' life in real danger to break Superman's brainwashing in an instant to save Bruce and her escape at the sees her her quickly coming up with a way to escape her chains while dangling in mid air.

Bitch? Too much?

Okay so she is no longer a thief anymore, but it's clear that she was and is infamous for it In-Universe. She is also willing to kill enemies, threatening a captured Ivy, actively trying to go for the killing blow on an unnamed thug, and killing the Riddler even as Bruce tries to save him. She also legit pushes the completely innocent Lois over the edge of a building to her potential death if Superman hadn't broken out of Ivy's brainwashing enough to save her. So I don't know, is that enough to move her out of being a Guile Hero?

Conclusion?

I am saying a yes, but am open for differing opinions.

This also as said above just the first of two versions of Catwoman that I am bringing you and I feel like I might look into the DC Animated Movie Universe as their version of Lex Luther and Talon from Batman vs. Robin might count in my opinion
