Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

[up][up] Yeah this thread's come along way. So many great candidates.

Okay now that I’ve finally caught up, I believe I might have a candidate of my own.

FBI: Most Wanted is the first spin off of Dick Wolf's FBI and a show that I’ve discussed on the Complete Monster thread a couple of times. As the title suggests it focuses on the FBI’s Most wanted specialising in manhunts for fugitives, being a sort of a Will The Get Away vs most crimes shows Whodunnit, staring Julian McMahon as Agent Jess LaCriox.

Now this candidate comes from the season two final Chattaboogie, where the team are called to Tennessee to investigate a case of an undercover DEA agent seemingly going rogue and committing two murders. However, the events quickly uncover something far more complex.

I give you Evan Greeter.

Who are they:

The heir to a Hillbilly Moonshiner syndicate known as “the Board” that his grandfather set up in thirties along with three other local families the Allen’s, the Kleinman’s and Shalet’s. In the present day the ring has transitioned from Moonshine to drug running, with them smuggling shipments up from Florida and transporting them out of Tennessee into Missouri to sell.

All the other families grew rich out of the syndicate using the money to start their businesses (the Allen’s running an auto dealer, the Shalet’s a textile mill and the Kleinman’s opening a chain of supermarkets), however, the Greeter’s were stuck as simple chicken farmers to act as cover for the ring.

Three years before the events of episode Evan was arrested for assault, and shortly afterward his father Driscoll died in a car accident. The Board members assured Evan that his father’s seat would be waiting for him when he got out and that they would look after his mother Gemma whilst he was inside.

Instead, once he was sentenced, they cut them both out to keep the profits for themselves. Unfortunately for them this turned out to be a big mistake.

What Do They Do:

Getting out early for good behaviour Evan vowed revenge upon the others for their betrayal but decided to play it smart. Meeting up with his girlfriend Maggie, Evan subtly spent the next six months carefully watching his father’s former partners, waiting for the moment to strike.

In the process he learned all the intricacies of every step of how ring worked that had developed whilst he was inside, but also discovered that Susan Kleinman (the board’s de facto head) had secretly set up a partnership of her own with rogue DEA agent Clayton Smith, where they laundered illegal gold for a Mexican drugs Cartel at a metal refinery in Louisville Kentucky, providing a fortune well beyond what the rest of the ring brought in, with them using Kleinman’s delivery trucks to secretly move the gold.

Following old man Shalet dying of a heart attack, Evan accurately predicted that Susan was planning to make her move to eliminate the others and take over everything with Smith. As such he beat her to the punch, interrupting a secret meeting between Smith and Jason Shalet. Casually disabling Smith with a can of bear spray, Evan stole his gun then shot Jason Shalet as he tried to run, pausing to let of one more shot to make it look more authentic as in all likelihood he would have missed in the confusion.

Maggie dragging Jason’s sister down from the house, then let her run to make it look more authentic, before casually killing her with a single shot. Making sure to get Smith’s prints on the spent cartridge then stratetically disposed it making it seem that Smith killed them both. Then off handily offing his condolences to Elise as "I always liked your daddy."

Taking Smith back to his base, Evan revealed to Smith he knew who he really was but assured him he wasn’t interested in him just what he knew. Specifically, he knew that Allen had a delivery of drugs arriving today, just not where and when. With Maggie they strung Smith up by a noose, then slowly began removing the bricks under his feet till he spilled. Concluding they could work with that, Evan kicked away the remaining bricks leaving Smith to hang, then staged the scene to look like he committed suicide and turned on his phone before escaping so the authorities could track (this plan only failing due to Smith’s body reacting badly to bear spray leaving several blisters on his chest).

Arriving at the drop off an SUV full of the drugs, Evan killed the delivery driver and waiting for Allen’s man Elwood to arrive. Catching him at gun point he asked if he ever got tired of just doing Allen’s dirty work and casually broke down Elwood’s attempts to deny his knowledge of the drugs, forcing him to give him the drop off phone that contained all the contacts, he then shot Elwood dead when he tried to run.

Agent’s Crosby and Gibson (who had been surveying Allen) tried to move to intercept, seeing them coming Evan calmly pretended to be oblivious. Only to grab his machine pistol and engage in a firefight with them. Rescued by Maggie on her motorbike, they managed to lose Crosby in the woods.

Predicting Allen would try to run for it and would go after the stash of money Smith was secretly embezzling from the DEA. Evan removed it from his apartment and then confronted Allen when he arrived about the betrayal, Allen tried to pass it off as being the fault of the others and that they could strike a deal. Instead Evan had Maggie kill him from behind with her hunting knife, telling him "that’s how it feels to get stabbed in the back," before stealing the money.

Striking the van with the gold delivery, when Susan’s goons tried to fight back the pair killed them and made off with the van.

Predicting Susan would go to ground to figure out what was going on, Evan and Maggie trapped in her own home. Evan then called her out for abandoning him and his mother, and then wiped the smile off her face revealing he knew all about her side operation and her plans, remarking “that’s the trouble with you Susan, you always underestimate everyone else” and revealed he’d stolen the gold, pointing out that if the shipment didn’t arrive the Cartel would skin her alive. Thus her only option was to introduce him to her contacts in Louisville, with Evan planning to burn her house down to distract the authorities whilst they made their escape, then once in Kentucky he would take over running both operation’s himself.

But by this point the FBI had managed to figure out what was going on and were waiting outside. In the confusion Maggie was shot dead, running out of bullets Evan made one last run to grab her machine gun, but was shot by Jess. Realising he was done Evan took it all surprisingly well, coldly chuckled to himself "shot by a fricking G-man, now ain’t that a bitch" before being led away to receive medical treatment.

However, the ending revealed Evan had preparing for his potential defeat had already given the $100,000 Smith embezzled to his mother and her boyfriend Earl, and sent them both off on a cruise into intentional waters outside the FBI’s jurisdiction, ensuring the two of them would enjoy their final years in luxury.

Are they Intelligent? Charming? Magnificent?

Oh definitely, Evan has an understate folksy charm and surprisingly genuine polite nature even when interacting with people he plans to kill. The only time it ever slips is at the end when he’s calling out Susan for all her double dealing and egotism, and even then he just raises his voice more akin to wanting to be heard. He is likewise surprisingly dignified in his defeat, he’s certainly not happy about losing or his girlfriend’s death, but beyond being a bit snappy he takes it all surprisingly well.

As for intelligence Evan is pretty hypercompetent, he spends the entire episode at least three steps ahead of all the other members of the ring, manages to figure out Susan’s operation just by carefully observing (with absolutely none of them even having the slightest idea he was out of prison let alone following them until he revealed himself) and near effortless implements every stage of his plans. He successfully leaves the authorities utterly baffled at what even is going on and thinking Smith is responsible for a reasonable while. There is no indication that if he hadn’t been caught at the end, that he couldn’t have pulled off his overall aim of taking over both the drug smuggling and the gold laundering operation.

Now Evan does a make few minor mistakes, such as leaving the can of bear repellent at the scene, but I’m inclined to give him a pass on that as it overall doesn’t do much to actually interfere with his plan unfolding. He arguably could have gotten away if he saved his speech with Susan until after they escaped, but considering how many good reasons he had to personally hate her (and how despicable she really is in general) I also don’t hold that against him.

As for comparison, overall due its nature focusing on Manhunts most antagonists in this show aren’t exactly what you’d call magnificent. Most are some combination of clearly out of their depth and making it up as they go along, utterly desperate or horrifically vicious. Evan by contrast is calm, controlled and got a very clear aim right ahead of him.

Are they A Bastard? To Much?

Oh easily. Evan kills or is responsible for the death of no less than eight people in the span of two days, is a former associate of the drug ring and his big plan is to take over not only that but an operation laundering money for a drugs cartel (plus its obvious he’s going to kill Susan once he no longer needs her). He does all this without even a second thought and is an extremely ruthless man.

At the same time he’s not cruel, he never tries to kill anyone who isn’t either involved within the ring or one of the authorities trying to arrest him. And beyond getting some obvious enjoyment at watching the former members who betrayed him squirm he’s not sadistic. Its clear he loves his girlfriend, loves his mother and loved his father. He also seems to value the tradition of the syndicate, telling Susan how ashamed her father would have been if he could see her now after all she’d done.

As such I don’t think it’s an issue.

Conclusion?

Overall I think Evan is a keeper, he’s likewise a pretty fun antagonist to watch.

There is perhaps one other candidate from the franchise’s parent series, but their a recurring antagonist so I’ll revisit them after I’ve seen their latest appearance.

What do you think?

The draft for the monkey, though I'm not sure if Literature is the right namespace for it. The Gingerbread Man and Chicken Licken are at least folktales with specified names and origins.

  • The Two Cats and The Monkeynote : The monkey in this moral story is a case of a third party benefiting from two parties quarreling. Upon seeing the two cats fight over a cake, the monkey offers to split it evenly so that each cat gets equal portions. However, he ensures that one piece is always larger than the other, taking bites out of the larger piece under the pretext of fairness. He repeats this till there is no cake left, leaving the cats with nothing.

Also, [tup] to Evan

Also on the topic of moral stories...

The Work

The Fox and the Crow is a story with the moral "Do not get carried away with flattery". Anyways, y'all are very nice and amiable tropers. Do you have any ideas for MB candidates? Not that I intend to trick you into revealing them so that I can swipe an EP from you, but y'know...

Anyways, the story is an "Aesop's Fable". There are versions of it in Greek, Latin, and Arabic, but the candidate is the fox, and the basic gist is as follows:

A crow comes across a piece of cheese. It picks it up and flies into a tree to enjoy the treat.

A fox comes along and sees the crow. The fox is hungry, but it doesn't have interest in the crow, but rather, what it has in it's beak.

The fox then starts complimenting the crow, calling it beautiful and spectacular. It then says (paraphrased) "If the bird looks so beautiful, I can only wonder what it sounds like. would love to hear the majestic sound of your voice"

Anyways, the crow complies and caws. Unfortunately, it loses the cheese in the process. The fox picks it up and flees, leaving the crow with nothing.

Magnificence and Bastardry

The fox appeals to the crows ego to trick the bird out of a meal. Its a short EP, I know, but I'm sure you all are very understanding that this candidate is very upvoteable.

No this isn't flattery. Why would I do that?

[up][up] I got a character to propose, should I wait until tomorrow?

Now for my second EP. I might take a little while doing the writeups, because I'm moving into a new place (again) and I'm probably gonna be starting a full-time job soon.

What's the work?

Road of the Dead is a driving flash game with RPG Elements made by Evil-Dog and SickDeathFiend, where you take control of John Creasman, who's trying to escape a heavily quarantined zombie-infested city on the highway.

Who is John Creasman? What has he done?

John Creasman is a mechanic with a prior history of disorderly conduct. One day, while listening to the radio while working on his car, he hears broadcasts on all the stations telling of a zombie infestation. He does what anyone would want to do in that situation: gets in his car and takes the highway to get out of the city. The highway, of course, is cluttered with debris, zombies, soldiers, and incredibly stupid pedestrians who think that the best way to run from zombies is to run in a zigzag formation on the highway, because that's totally not gonna get you hit by an oncoming car.

As Creasman makes his way through the city, the military, catches wind of his escape attempts and, on orders from a ridiculously incompetent commander, tries to stop him by any means necessary, first by shooting at him, then deploying spike strips. Later into the game, they start using more drastic methods, like deploying an incredibly persistent helicopter pilot codenamed Hellfire... who John repeatedly tricks into smashing into signs so he's forced to return to base for repairs. Then they start setting mines and calling on carpet bombers to stop him. Whenever Creasman dies, he's taken back to his garage to put some brand spankin' new additions to his car, like a radar device, an armored plate for the grill, reinforcements for the tires, and a bulletproof vests for himself.

The incompetent commander is eventually replaced by General Sherman, a much better leader who actually gives a shit about his men and has smarter tactics for dealing with Creasman. But nonetheless, Creasman persists, weaving his way through the debris on the highway, running over soldiers and zombies alike (and let's face it, you're gonna hit SOME civilians at one point or another) and weaving through the debris as Sherman announces that they're about to drop the bomb. Ultimately, Creasman makes it to the tunnel as the city behind him is bombed into oblivion... but the zombies are still moving, and as the sequel reveals, have already spread to other cities.

Is he magnificent? A bastard? Too much?

For starters, he's a great mechanic and for someone who's never been in a situation quite like this, he does a damn fine job at surviving against both zombies (including mutant zombies who are much stronger and more persistent than most) and the freaking military. He is also determined and filled with Badass Boasts (of note is whenever Hellfire shows up he yells, "I'm not stopping! You hear me? I'M NOT STOPPING!") And he shows a lot of cunning, like tricking Hellfire into hitting signs. As far as him being a bastard, his main goal is to get out of the city alive, knowing full well that it could potentially cause the zombie virus to spread. He also doesn't display a lot of guilt for running over civilians (the most he'll ever say is "Sorry!", but he'll also call them a "bunch of yo-yos" on occasion), though there is a note in the game when upgrading your car horn that says "hitting civilians is bad". Lastly, he also seems to enjoy running over and shooting the zombies (and soldiers)... maybe a little too much. Like when he shouts "BOOM, HEADSHOT!" after blowing a zombie's/soldier's brains out. And let's not forget the Noodle Incident. But from all appearances, he's not a monster and is certainly less of an unambiguously bad person than my previous EP.

Competition?

I've been playing with the idea of proposing General Sherman (not that one, though he's got a few similar goals) for a while now. Sherman has a lot of traits of a MB. A clear code of honor, cares for his men, a great strategist, is reasonable enough to evacuate the protagonists of the second game before he nukes the city, but is also entirely aware that he's sacrificing numerous innocent lives to stop the zombie threat. But he doesn't quite get just how much of a Determinator Creasman is, since Creasman passes by his "surprise" with little trouble, and he's also Wrong Genre Savvy, believing the nuke will stop the zombies and not realizing they've already spread outside the city. Also, Creasman stands out enough on his own, being just one man with a car, a gun, and mechanical knowledge, against a city full of heavily armed military personnel and zombies that are hard to kill.

Verdict?

Again, up to you.

@MGD It's entirely up to you how much you want to do, if it's everything you missed or only so much of it. Either way, you're a rock star.

@Satoshi It's up to you. Thread's not too busy for it now from the looks of it.

The other Mark Wahlberg potential one I was thinking of was Bob Lee Swagger. Should I do an EP sometime? You guys a yay or a nay?

Total Shuffled Island Series: Noah is considerably more devious and manipulative than canon. Serving as the Big Bad of the fourth season, Revenge of the Island. Noah keeps a low profile while subtilty sabotaging the competition. He causes Leonard and Justin's eliminations by writing them anonymous notes, stroking the former's ego and making the latter butt heads with Lindsay throughout the challenge. Upon Courtney being given the power to decide who to eliminate, Noah gets Zoey eliminated by her by forging a diary framing Zoey as a two-faced hypocrite planning to betray everyone. Successfully eliminating Courtney and Jasmine and making it to the finale, Noah becomes the first villain to win a season by using a variety of traps and weapons to wear down Harold's Powered Armor and defeat him.
