Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

Funny I think a long time ago we said no one would probably count in criminal minds.

And now were up 4. Guess it's helped by being a 15 season show with a new villain every episode. Even if...most are vile.

If anything, that actually helps potential keepers' chances - the fact that so many people are doing so much vile shit means that potentials can get away with a lot more before they cross the "too bad" threshold. I've realized it's why Buffy had so many keepers (and to be honest, something like Supernatural probably has more one shots) - not because the villains are sympathetic (which is why we thought Angel would have more), but because the heinous standard is so high that turning humanity into a living food bank isn't even too bad.

Also, completely unrelated, but I find it funny that the 4 keepers are actually two sets of two, and one's a partnership but the other's a vs.

[up][up][up][up] I am guessing that is also why Warhammer has so many despite a majority of the characters doing insanely fucked up stuff that would disqualify most characters, due to it being a fucked up world in general. That idea is interesting to think about and yeah Criminal Minds has among the highest heinous standard.

Yeah, a lot of Warhammer villains come off as pretty reasonable when you look at them versus Chaos, to the point where most of the keeps opposed Chaos when it came down to the End Times since... y'know... Evil Versus Oblivion and all that.

Though that's not to say no Chaos faction members can count either... we've got Khazrak, and I don't have time to review all the material but I'm like seventy-percent sure Wulfrik the Wanderer could keep for this. Guy has a code, (admittedly a very blue and orange one) and is an absolute Genius Bruiser who eventually outwits a chosen of Tzeentch. Doesn't hurt that he's generally considered the fan-favorite of the Norscans either.

So, a couple years ago on the CM thread, I proposed Frieza from a fanfic called In Pursuit of Vengeance, an AU fanfic that bases itself on the idea that Raditz recruited Goku into Frieza's army by threatening to purge Earth then and there (and then went on to purge the planet anyway) While reading the fanfic, I also thought about how one of Frieza's minions in the fanfic was a potential candidate for MB. And no, it's not Ginyu. It's a different horned soldier of Frieza's, and one of the last I'd expect to undergo such levels of Adaptational Intelligence.

Who is he? What does he do?

Dodoria is a commander in Frieza's army and, not counting The Ginyu Force, second to Zarbon for his strongest soldier. When Goku asks Frieza to train him so that he can be stronger than Raditz, Frieza says he will on the condition that he fufills a task with Dodoria first, purging a race of ice-like beings known as "Spettians", Frieza and Dodoria lying to Goku that they're savage warriors so that he won't completely nix the idea when in truth, they're weaklings. When fighting the Spettians, Dodoria notes how Goku is still refusing to kill, so he provokes Goku by saying that he could convince Frieza to train Raditz instead. This enrages Goku enough in the heat of the moment to cause him to stop holding back and kill the Spettians he's fighting. When Goku realizes this, he attacks Frieza when they return, causing Dodoria to break his spine, but leaving Goku alive for his future training with Frieza after Goku heals up. (For any confusion for why they spare Goku, Frieza is aware that Vegeta, Nappa, and Raditz intend to rebel when they get stronger, and believes he can use Goku to crush said rebellion before it starts)

As time goes on however, Dodoria and Goku begin to somewhat bond with each other, mainly because Goku's low on friends due to how the only other person Goku got along with, Mengo, was killed by Frieza as a punishment for Goku. Dodoria reveals his skill in cooking to Goku, Goku talks with Dodoria about his life on Earth, and so on. Eventually, when Goku, Vegeta, and Nappa go to Planet Namek for it's Dragon Balls, Frieza orders Zarbon and Dodoria to go to Namek and bring them to Frieza so that he can torture them to death. However, Dodoria is uncomfortable with this due to forming a friendship with Goku. He realizes that they're after the Namekian Dragon Balls (in this story, Frieza and his army doesn't know about them, and Dodoria only pieces it together because of Goku's stories about Earth) and believes that by bringing the Dragon Balls to Frieza, they can appease Frieza without needing to kill the Saiyans. However, he finds out that Goku wants to use the Namekian Dragon Balls to revive the people Raditz killed on Earth. So, after he and Zarbon attack a Namekian village for a Dragon Ball, Dodoria attacks Zarbon while he's off-guard and vaporizes him.

Later, while Goku and Vegeta are fighting Captain Ginyu, Dodoria arrives with Nail. Knowing about Ginyu's Body Change technique, Dodoria gets in the way of it to protect Goku, changing bodies with Ginyu. Dodoria then uses Ginyu's body to incapacitate Ginyu before Goku kills him. Dodoria's not exactly happy with that part though as it was before he could get his body back, but he quickly uses it to his advantage. When Frieza contacts him thinking he's Ginyu, Dodoria lies to Frieza that Goku and Vegeta are still contained on Namek, Frieza saying he'll arrive in two weeks. This buys time for Goku and Vegeta to train for when they confront Frieza. Meanwhile, Dodoria himself changes his ways completely and trains Piccolo, Gohan, and the human Z-Fighters so that they'll be ready to defend the Earth from Frieza's soldiers, and at the end of the story, moves in with Goku and his family to help Chi-Chi around the house.

Is he magnificent? A bastard?

He's infinitely more intelligent and impressive than the standard thug he was in canon, from tricking Goku into purging an innocent race of weaklings by taking advantage of his hatred for Raditz, defeating both Zarbon and Ginyu despite the two being stronger than him through tactics, and using his situation of being trapped in Ginyu's body to his advantage to trick Frieza. He starts as a smarmy asshole, but as a result of bonding with Goku, he grows into a Noble Demon before turning into an outright good guy, and borders on the Only Sane Man out of the Z-Fighters due to actually putting pragmatism over a love of fighting. But it's not as if he's only magnificent when he's no longer a bastard. Initially, he only cared about saving Goku, and was more than fine with killing innocent Namekians for the Dragon Balls before finding out that Goku intended to use them to revive the purged Earthlings. (Or more accurately, revive Piccolo and Kami so that the Earth Dragon Balls could be used).

Any mitigating factors?

Nah. He's naturally terrified of Frieza, but he doesn't really do anything dirty or undignified to qualify for Dirty Coward even before his Character Development, not to mention willingly putting himself in danger of facing Frieza's wrath by killing Zarbon and opposing Captain Ginyu.

Final Thoughts?

I can't believe I'm saying this, but [tup] for Dodoria.

I know nothing about canon, but Dodoria sounds like a yes here

Alright, let's just get this over with sooner rather than later:

  • "Secrets and Lies":
    • Bruno Hawks is a deputy director of the CIA whose reasonable leadership hides his devious traits. In truth the mole aligned with Hassan Nadir, Bruno discovers Agent Summers had converted Nadir's wife to the CIA and smuggles Hassan into the country to find her, torturing Summers to discover her location; when it becomes clear that he won't break, Bruno simply snaps his neck, knowing the CIA will cover it up for him. When the BAU begins investigating, Bruno lets everyone else incriminate themselves without interfering, only taking direct action when Olivia investigates him; after planting a virus at Spence's station to incriminate him, he quietly kills her with no one noticing. Although the BAU manages to reveal his treachery with an incredibly elaborate scheme of their own, Bruno accepts his fate with no shame nor regret, accepting his arrest with the knowledge that the CIA will either kill him or fake his death so that he won't have to go to prison.
    • Agent John Summers, even after his death, sets a plan in motion to bring down the mole in the Agency. Having previously converted Aaliyah Nadir to the CIA and faked her and her childrens' deaths to bring them to America, Summers realized there was a mole in the agency. Knowing he would die soon, Summers ordered a psych eval on himself and the four people it was most likely to be, taking the opportunity to subtly tell Gideon where he put the family. After he stashes them at the docks, Bruno confronts him in his home, yet he dies without revealing the family's location. With the family left behind as bait for Hassan, the BAU manage to utilize the pieces Summers left behind to not only track them down just as fast, but also exploit a loophole Summers knew Hassan would fall into to arrest him despite his Diplomatic Immunity, also revealing that Bruno was the mole in the process.

[tup] to Summers and Dodoria

Alright, it’s now midnight where I'm at which means that its been officially two weeks since the 5th season of Rick and Morty came out and I now got a special candidate that I’ve been really looking forward to discuss, but first let’s discuss what the show is about

What’s The Work?

Rick and Morty is an American adult animated science fiction sitcom created by Justin Roiland and Dam Harmon. The series follows the misadventures of cynical mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his good-hearted, but fretful grandson Morty Smith, who split their time between domestic life and inter-dimensional adventures. Among all the foes Rick and Morty have ever faced none are as cunning, charming, and memorable is Evil Morty

Who Is He What? Has He Done?

Evil Morty is one of many versions of Morty First appearing in "Close Rick-Counters of the Rick Kind" he uses a mind-controlling device to bring a Rick under his control. Through that the He and Rick kill multiple Rick and Morty's while framing the main duo. The duo also uses many Morty's to to create a force field to prevent the main duo from finding them.

When the main duo stops their plans Evil Morty uses this opportunity to pin all the blame onto the mind-controlled Rick, while he blends in with the "rescued" Morty's to escape from the Rick & Morty Citadel, all while destroying any evidence linking him to the serial killings.

Evil Morty appears once more in the "Tales From the Citadel" where he runs for president of the Citadel. Many of the Ricks and Morty's initially believe that he isn't going to win the elections but he give an rousing rousing speech about the class divide between the various Ricks and Mortys on the Citadel during the debate, which quickly earns him lots of praise and support putting him in the lead.

Also, Evil Morty fires his Campaign Manager for not believing in him. the Campaign manager appear once more in an attempt to kill Evil Morty. The attempt failed and Evil Morty uses this opportunity to secure in spot as president and has the campaign manager killed. Evil Morty meets with Rick Leaders on a shadow council of Ricks, who smugly tells him he has no real power and that they're the one really in control.

He rectifies that by simply asking for those who feel this way to raise their hands. Then all the Ricks who do so are swiftly executed at a snap of the fingers, leaving only two who instantly back down and cooperate showing that Evil Morty is the one truly in control and begin to make changes to the Citadel to further establish his control, all while he drinks his scotch watching in satisfaction to all his rivals are dead and there's no to challenge his control.

Now appearing in the Season 5 episode “Rickmurai Jack” Evil Morty reveals that all of his actions he committed throughout the series was a complex plan to escape the “Central Finite Curve” and travel to the multiverse where Rick isn’t the smartest being alive having grown sick of his role as one of many disposable Morties used and abused by the Ricks.

His killing Ricks and Morty’s while framing the main duo for the murders were all to lure Rick and Morty to his location where Evil Morty had capture Rick and probed his mind for knowledge of how to escape the Central Finite Curve while running for president of the Citadel and running for his was so that he could use the resources and man power to remake the Citadel into a giant portal gun for him to use to enact on his plan to escape.

When Evil Morty learns that C-137 Rick and Morty are at the citadel, Evil Morty invites the two to have dinner with him where he uses the opportunity to complete scanning Rick’s mind thus giving Evil Morty exactly what he needed for he reveal Good Morty their true purpose while tampering with all of the Rick’s portal guns where monsters would kill them foiling their attempts to escape.

Evil Morty also tampered with the Ricks and Morty’s attempts to resurrect themselves so that they ended up killed where their blood is used to power up the citadel’s massive portal gun Evil Morty giving him enough power to activate it with himself in the escape pod. Not only does his plan to escape the Central Finite Curve work absolutely perfectly, but the power of his giant portal had also destroyed the Citadel and the Central Finite Curve, thus indirectly freeing that part of the universe from Rick’s influence, while Morty decides to explore the now multiverse where Rick isn’t the smarts man in the world.

Is he charismatic? Intelligent? Able to think on his feet?

For charisma, his able to win the presidential seat for the Citadel through speeches and charisma alone, and that's something especially since he's a Morty and many thought he would never win. He uses his charisma to get all the Ricks and Morty to do unknowingly help him complete his ultimate plan of escaping the Central Finite Cerve. He’s also a major Ensemble Dark Horse because he is so charismatic, and season 5 has basically made Evil Morty my new favorite character.

For Intelligence, he's able to make a mind controlling device and use it to control a Rick, creates a forcefield and cloaking device out of other Morty's, and uses his knowledge of Rick’s personality to escape and outsmart Rick him several times, knows what to say to win the election, is aware that there is a shadow council and eliminates it immediately, and creates a giant portal gun that he uses not only to escape the Central Finite Curve but also destroy it.

For thinking on his feet, there are some things he hasn't expected but instead can use them for his own advantages. These include being able to escape Main Rick and Morty while pinning all the blame on his Rick, exploits the campaign manager's failed assassination attempt to elicit sympathy, secure his position a president, and invite Rick to have dinner with him to complete his Mind scan on Rick that was previously interrupted.

In all these instances, he always has a calm calculated demeanor never once suffers a Villainous Breakdown, and its through all of his brilliance, charisma, and quick thinking that he is able to outsmart Rick, win, and get everything that he wanted which suffering no punishment.

What’s The Competition Like?

Rick sets the bar high in the competition due to being the smartest person in his multiverse, but he has many MANY flaws that will prevent Rick from ever being this trope. That said Evil Morty manages to beat the competition by completely outsmarting not just the main Rick but every single Rick in a universe where Ricks are suppose to be the smartest beings, before changing the status quo and make Ricks just like everyone else. It also helps that Evil Morty has none of Rick’s flaws, making Evil Morty standout simply with his cunning, charm, and accomplishments.

Is he a Bastard? Is he too much of a Bastard?

Well, he forcibly mind control his rick, goes on a killing spree on other Rick and Morty, creates a force field and cloaking device out of Morty's by torturing them, kills the entire shadow council, his campaign manager and other witnesses (other Ricks and Morties), was shown to enslave Morties to build the citadel into a giant portal gun and later has Ricks and Mortys die to fuel his giant portal gun before leaving the Citadel to be destroyed. So yeah Evil Morty can easily be considered a bastard for all things considered

That said it is reveled to be a victim of a system where he and the other Morty’s are forced to be abused sidekicks and everything that he has done was all part of a plan to break free from that oppressive system by escaping the Central Finite Curve, thus explaining his distaste for Ricks and even showing a little pity to the Morty’s, admitting that its pointless to hate them due bred as Ricks slaves

Not to mention to most of his victims are complete tyrannical pricks, especially the shadow council, whose been oppressing the Morties more generation. In fact once Evil Morty takes over the Citadel he made some changes that actually benefit the Morties and put the Ricks in their places. Though of course this would not matter much in “Rickmurai Jack” but still he was a better leader to the Ricks and Morty’s than the shadow council prior

Also his killing spree of other Ricks and Morties and framing to main duo for them isn't done out of needless cruelty but as a smokescreen to lure Rick and Morty in their efforts to try clearing their names where Evil Morty can scan Rick’s mind. While his way of the using some of the Morties as a forcefield can come off a cruel, he's to it out of sadism but the fact that they are a practical use of trying to hide from the Citadel and main Rick and Morty. Though Rick said that five Morty’s could suffice, but Evil Morty might not know the amount needed, and the amount of Morty’s he use did get him the results anyway.

Even trying to have all Ricks and Morty’s in the killed wasn’t done For the Evulz as he was collecting their blood to fuel his giant portal gun/escape pod, and it proves to be just enough to escape and even destroy the Central Finite Curve. Plus his crimes only seems to be directed to just Ricks and Morty’s as he’s never seen hurting or killing anyone else and once he does escape the Central Finite Curve there isn’t any evidence that he’ll continue his evil ways simply taking a deep breath and smile before he decides to explore the new multiverse.

Final Verdict
