All-Purpose Policy and Meta discussion: Administrivia.Trope Repair Shop

Go To

This thread is a metathread for Trope Repair Shop discussion. Things like TRS policy, what is needed in a TRS opening post, questions about whether a certain topic is TRS-worthy and questions about why a thread wasn't opened go here.

Some guidelines for when/whether to use TRS:

  • If the trope is fine, but has some bad examples, feel free to clean them up or to start a cleanup project at Projects: Short-Term. Trope Repair Shop is for when cleaning isn't sufficient.
  • If you think there's something wrong with the trope that systematically attracts improper examples, start a discussion at Trope Talk. Use a Wick Check to see whether there's an issue present (and if there is, what the issue is), and post the results on TRS Queue and wait your turn if a problem is present. The following methods are two possible ways to do a wick check (though not necessarily the only ways):
    • You can go ahead with the Wick Check without a discussion if you know what you're looking for. While it's not mandatory, feel free to ask someone for help confirming that you got the issue and the numbers correct.
    • Consult the Wick Check Project thread to collect evidence if you need help.
  • If a wick check is too much for you, you can leave the issue at Tropes Needing TRS citing the discussion.
  • Depending on a trope (or non-trope) in question, a wick check may be determined to not be required, such as for tropes that are not thriving (per the standards for trope health listed on the Wick page). However, there is no problem if you want to do one anyway.

For a more detailed introduction to this forum, click here.

For related projects, see Wick Cleaning Projects and the Wick Check Project.

See Tropes Needing TRS for a list of trope candidates for TRS.

A (not mandatory, informal) queue for prospective TRS participants can be found at the TRS Queue.

Slotted Pay Phone into the queue, will wick check it but from even cursory checks it should probably be axed/disambiged for the same reason Phone Booth was.

This is just a heads up that once Bald Of Awesome has been resolved and the new Bald of Authority is launched, I'll be taking Bald Black Leader Guy in for a merge between it and the new trope.

I can kinda see why it existed as a subtrope when Bald Of Awesome was the trope, considering that "awesome" can cover a wide array of things, but Bald of Authority's more narrow scope makes it a much harder sell imo and pushes it into the not useful variety of The Same, but More Specific

I'm not putting myself in the numbered queue yet just because the queue has been moving fast and I'm not sure when wick cleaning for Bald Of Awesome will finish. I will copy this explanation into that sandbox though for when I eventually make moves.

The Chew Toy is said to be The Woobie counterpart, and the main difference from Butt-Monkey is stated to be how the audience see them, but it's not YMMV?

I always felt like The Chew Toy was redundant to Butt-Monkey myself.

Came across Leap Day and from the way it's written, it's just a trope covering a person being born on 2/29. That's it. It's not even a subtrope of Significant Birth Date. To me that's pretty clearly chairs and I'd advocate for a cut (settle for a disambig if ppl want to preserve inbounds), but I wanted to see if others reading the description felt similarly.

We might spin something off and call it Leap Day Birthday or whatnot, but that's a matter for TLP.

I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.

I think the gist of it is being born on Feb 29 and jokes about less birthdays as a result.: “ That though you've lived 21 years, yet, if we go by birthdays, you're only 5 and a little bit over!”

Or you know, grumping about not having a birthday party at all (and not in the following day either) except for specific years.

What if we split it into a Useful Notes page for the actual day and a trope like Leap Day Angst or something for when the birthday in-universe is joked about or there's problems about not being able to celebrate?

Leap Day page does read like a Useful Notes/ page and not a character trope. But as usual, before anything a wickcheck is required to see how many examples are just Significant Birth Date and which have something more to them.

[up]yeah i was just checking to see if anyone else felt like it was worth the wick check. the on page examples are pretty all over the place with the majority just being "Character A has a birthday on 2/29" which made me think this entire trope was an issue.

thanks everyone for the feedback

[up][up]I think that would fit better under a wider trope about bday angst. I suggested a trope like that here in the Trope Idea Sounding Board (to you! just realized that, ha ha)

I closed the No Straight Examples, Please! thread.

I never got a response from Spark9 or Playing_with_boy in the past and I don't know if Calamity Raven 26's thread is ready, so I'm going to page ~Piterpicher this time.

[up] TBH, I'd say that Spark's thread isn't ready either as there's no checking done and the entire OP is anecdotal.

I didn't ping them so they could take the slot, I pinged them so they could understand that their OP doesn't cut it yet. So that if they do come back, they don't immediately make it and then complain if it gets morgued.

Hey I have a question.

How old does a trope have to be to warrant TRS? I know Romantic Asexual is very new and that has a thread, and Stock Parody Jokes and Flagship Franchise are also newer tropes that have been identified as possible TRS candidates, so newer tropes can go to TRS.

But I also remember that Jerks Are Worse Than Villains was another identified TRS candidate and the argument for not taking it was that it was too new. With this in mind, when is a trope too new for TRS?

I don't think a trope needs to be a certain age before TRS unless it's an issue of not thriving. But if it is brand new then usually it can just be sent back to TLP.

Right, I think tropes that are still fresh enough to be unlaunched can just be handled at Crash Rescue. I'd say like a few weeks to a year is enough for a trope to be established enough to warrant TRS. The issue with JAWTV is that it attracted issues right out the gate, but since then it hasn't really been brought up.
