Which crossovers make perfect sense?

I mean, crossovers in general tend to use some hand-wavey excuse to insert one character into another universe, but has anyone found good crossovers where the universes just... blend together really really well?

Not including things like Spider-man/X-men, or FSN/Tsukihime because they literally are the same universe.

Space-Western animes of the late 90s x with Firefly.... If anyone can find a good crossover between something like Trigun, Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop and Firefly and/or all of the above in a blender, call me, baby.

In which I attempt to be a writer.

Hmm... is if okay if it's a crossover that I think would work really well, but haven't seen yet? Because the 'Eagle Sense' powers in Assassin's Creed are, when you think about it, extremely similar to some powers that Force Sensitives in Star Wars have (sensing intentions, being able to track people could be a form of seeing the Force guiding them). Thus it would make sense for the Assassin Brotherhood to have some primitive Force Users. (Plus, assassins with light sabers).

Also, I have seen a fic that blended Star Wars and Harry Potter surprisingly well on the Star Wars recommendations page called 'Harry Tano'.

And there's this huge fic series that crosses over GI Joe and X-Men Evolution extremely believably and well, known as the Misfits verse. However, it's more on the X-men side than the GI Joe side.

All of the above fics use the idea that both universes coincide naturally, and there's no 'teleportation to a new universe'. Although in fictional series where going over to alternate planes of reality is a thing, or like Doctor Who where people travel willy nilly all over time and space, it is much easier for fic authors to fit things together.

Borderlands/Mass Effect

As seen here: No Gods, Only Guns

You don't have to tweak much for the two to work together well.

I think as a general rule commonality of setting helps, depending exactly on how things work out.

Hypothetical example. Ranma ½ and Inuyasha. Both are at least partly set in Modern Japan and because they share the same author they use very similar ideas and concepts behind their supernatural shenanigans so its a fairly simple matter to posit that they actually take place in the same universe and the two groups are simply unaware of each other. (It helps that the majority of Inu Yasha's actions takes place four to five hundred years before the modern age).

Expanding that outwards, any two series set in what is ostensibly the 'real' world with sufficient geographic separation is fairly easy to crossover, though the closer they match in tone the easier it is to work. So it would be easier to cross over a sitcom like The Big Bang Theory with another sitcom such as Modern Family than from something like say the Law & Order franchise.

The same also works for one 'real' world series being crossed over with another series that has some sort of Masquerade going on that might plausibly hide events from the more fantastic series from the characters in the more mundane one. Say NCIS Team Gibbs having to investigate a case that gets them involved with the StargateSG1 Stargate Program.

Casshern Sins would probably go pretty well with Mega Man Zero, being that both are a Crapsack World set After the End in a world where humans don't exist anymore and robots rule the Earth.

.... wait, I think there might have been a human character in Casshern, but I'm also pretty sure he died the same episode he was introduced.

On the subject of After the End, High School Of The Dead and The Walking Dead could probably work in the same setting (both are Zombie Apocalypse stories, it's just that the one has a shitload more Male Gaze-based Fanservice than the other).

For Humongous Mecha, trying not to lift too much from Super Robot Wars...

Code Geass and Full Metal Panic: mostly Real Robot Genre shows, the former show stars a group of terrorists who live For Great Justice, the latter features a paramilitary organization dedicated to fighting terrorism and putting out regional conflicts. See also Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and the first season of Mobile Suit Gundam 00.

Martian Successor Nadesico and Superdimension Fortress Macross: given that the former starts as something of an Affectionate Parody of the latter...

Pacific Rim and My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Both of them have established ways of traveling to different universes. Both universes have repelled kaiju attacks. And both series feature The Power of Friendship as major themes—in PR, teamwork is what powers the giant robots, and in FIM, friendship is literally one of the most powerful magic forces in the universe.

I'm aware there's already at least one crossover fic, but I haven't read it, so I can't comment on how well it does with the premise.

I didn't write any of that.

@Eva Unit 01 Code Geass and Full Metal Panic could be decidedly amazing. I'd love to see how FMP's whispered-designed technology (and the existence of the whispered in general) affected the general setting and especially the mecha of Code Geass. Then there's the question of whether Britannia or the EU gives Mithril jurisdiction or by what miracle of diplomacy both could end up backing it. Oh the possibilities!

My personal preference is to find out how to best fuse two or more settings together so that I don't have to deal with the headache of bridges between worlds (don't get me wrong that is a fine plot device but not usually one I like figuring out for conceptualization purposes). Cowboy Bebop's main cast and general feel would fit rather nicely in the Verse of Firefly even Faye's backstory as an early test subject of suspended animation could be kept although the ramifications for her may be different. So I think it would be a fine crossover so long as attention is paid to integrating Bebop elements into Firefly's setting. It would be fun to see Spike & Co potentially hired to take on the crew of the Serenity (even though the crew of the Serentiy would have a pretty solid edge).

But I digress. In short I like settings that have room to be fit together.

The Nasuverse is surprisingly good for this.

Nasuverse and Gunbuster Actually makes a surprising amount of sense within the context of the true identity of the creatures from it. The antibodies of the galaxy concept is not to different from the origins of Nasuverse Vampires and not too different in nature from the Ultimate Ones of the planets. If the Galaxy or perhaps a large star from the galactic core had a spirit like Gaia from Nasuverse canon it wouldn't be out of place really. Furthermore with a little retooling the mecha from that series could have their physics-screwing abilities justified via Magitech. An life or death struggle for the entire earth really is worth breaking the Masquerade over.

Nasuverse and Sakura Wars: Seems really natural to me as well. Consider the fact that it was a magical ritual that started the initial conflict with the eldritch abominations in the first place. This again, broke the Masquerade forcing the Mage's association to step up and cooperate with the world governments to save mankind leading to the creation of the Magic-based technology from the setting. In fact The Hanagumi from canon may have rival organizations backed by the Holy Church founded for essentially the same purpose but using methods based off Scriptural Weaponry.

On another Fantasy Note Touhou and RosarioToVampire : With the abunduance of humanoid monsters and magic in each franchise, the secret monster settlements and the fact that multiple species of monsters do indeed collaborate to hide from (and occasionally prey on) humanity it seems like the two settings would fit together pretty nicely.

Bravely Default and Kingdom Hearts have so much crossover potential, not only because of the fact that BD is a Square Enix title but due to shared themes, notably darkness as a threat as well as some spoilers I'd rather not state in case anyone hasn't played the game.

Plus, I just love the idea of the BD party meeting some of the KH crew. Especially Ringabel and Ven for shenanigans.

The Sentinel with more or less every Detective show out there. (Detective shows in general are usually very easy to cross over).

Spider-man with the MCU. And naturally Guardians of the Galaxy with the Avengers (which will most likely soon be canon, so naturally it works).

And for some reason Sherlock and Harry Potter works really well if it is well written.

What have you done, Phoenix Knight? Now I want to read a Touhou crossover with Rozario.

Rather than smart, I'd prefer to be wise. It would let me be silly more often.

Warhammer 40K and Neon Genesis Evangelion go well together, if you strip the whining and the angst and the why me from Ikari Shinji and just make him, well, happy.

Which is why Shinji and Warhammer 40K is among my favourite crossover fanfictions to this day.

Hmm, I was thinking Numenera would go well with most superhero universes. You'd have to ditch the modern real world-ish setting most superhero universes have, but I think that's a plus, it's overdone.
