Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

On Pre-Insanity Reveal: In Season 4 of Bojack Horseman, we see flashbacks of the early life of Beatrice Horseman, Bojack's abusive mother. She was once a happy child, but growing up with an abusive father and a bipolar (and later lobotomized) mother crushed much of the innocence out of her. In spite of this, she became a witty, educated young woman, but her terrible, impulsive decision to sleep with and then marry the shiftless Butterscotch doomed her to spend her productive years as an upper-middle-class housewife, and she took out her frustrations on her son.

But she does't seem to be insane at all, just abusive, so wouldn't this fall more into Freudian Excuse, Troubled Abuser, and Start of Darkness?

[up]Correct. Beatrice was going through dementia in her old age and was never mentally ill before.

So it turn out the example left out the "rows and rows of young Iowans with bread bags slipped over their feet" remark, which I added.

From YMMV.Cruelty Squad:

  • Obvious Beta: When the game first launched, none of the protective augments actually gave you any armor - and by extension, none of the agility augments took away armor. This wouldn't be patched until May 2023, over two years after launch.

Doesn't seem like one or two useless bits makes the whole thing an obvious beta to me.

Not sure these aren't just really downplayed Cursed with Awesome:

  • Point Buy System's "take a flaw but get more points".
  • The kind of "Berzerk" Status Effect that removes player control in exchange for increased strength.

Would this count as Conflict Killer for The Righteous Gemstones.

  • During the final confrontation between Eli and Peter with the latter about to use a car bomb to blow up Eli's church, the whole situation gets interrupted by a swarm of locusts, forcing both the Gemstones and the Montgomerys to help protect their families.

Okay. The description emphasises military organisations so heavily (with a brief nod to rescue services) that I thought I should make sure.

I remember how the now-defunct (link leads to the TRS thread that resulted in disambugation of Blade On A Stick, and there is quite a history of them. That being said, I seen several wicks on Fire Emblem's character pages when I search on related to Jousting Lance.

However, in a logical matter of why this trope seems to be applied, Lances are recurrently the weapon of both Cavaliers and (armored) Knights (the former are on horseback, the latter wears heavy armor and often carries a big shield), and it seems to apply to most lances as they can only attack from close range by thrusting the lance into the enemy.

Javelins and similar 1-2 ranged "Lances" are an exception of this (they are thrown). I might need advice to see if this could work, or various reasons that it would not work for this trope.

[up][up] OK... that wasn't entirely clear.

[up] There seems to be a push to get rid of all — or at least most — of the weapon "tropes", since different types of weapons by themselves don't constitute tropes unless there's something particularly unusual about them, like a BFS being too big and heavy for a normal person to wield. I wouldn't be surprised if Jousting Lance ends up on the chopping block sooner or later. I'm not sure if there's a trope for fighting by using a melee weapon as a ranged weapon... Throwing Your Sword Always Works seems specific to swords.

On Hide Your Lesbians:

Hide Your Lesbians is supposed to be when same-gender relationships are hidden with Implausible Deniability, but according to this example, the case with Cardcaptor Sakura's English dub (specifically the infamous Nelvana dub) is "equal opportunity", meaning all the opposite sex relationships from the original anime are excised as well. So does this truly count as an example or is this a case of Square Peg, Round Trope. I know tropes are flexible, but I'm not super sure on this one.

[up] Good thing you brought that up. Because another canadian dub did the same! The Pretty Cure did that too, but only once and another straight crush is kept.

Let me explain.

The Futari Wa Pretty Cure dub excises most hints of LGBT themes. The Love Letters Nagisa got from girls are turned into fanmail. But they also removed a heterosexual crush. A girl from Honoka's class,Seiko is in love with Kiriya who begins to have feelings for Honoka, and tears her love letter apart. But there are hints that they got rid of this because Kiriya had felt Honoka loved Seiko more than him and since he's from the Dark Zone, didnt know how to differentiate friendship from love. So this removal was also driven by the desire to excise LGBT themes. So Sophie's letter is her just wanting to be friends with Kirea in the dub.

See, that one does sound like Hide Your Lesbians, but the original example doesn't have the context (to me, a person unfamiliar with the series) to say whether or not it's the same.

From Kai's section in Characters.Mobile Suit Gundam:

  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Arguably with Defrosting Ice Queen Sayla. Their first encounter involved a Bitch Slap, she rolled her eyes at him for most of the show... it's also worth noting that Sayla fully fits the description of the ideal girlfriend Kai's describing at one point... and eventually he offhandedly and casually says he loves her. It’s not shown if she reciprocated, but as the show goes on she at least softened up with him, and Kai's the one who catches her after she escapes A Baoa Qu, when she's naturally quite happy to see him.

Since Administrivia.Examples Are Not Arguable, what should we do about this entry?

I'd say the Cardcaptor Sakura example still counts since they did remove the yuri and yaoi romantic content (for example, Tomoyo's crush on Sakura and Touya Kinomoto's relationship with Yukito Tsukishiro)... in addition to the heterosexual romantic content too.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach:

  • Merging the Branches: The main game has six possible endings, and shattering both Chica and Monty is only required for one of them; the others can be achieved while leaving whoever you didn't shatter before 6 AM unscathed. It is implied that the DLC follows up on a variation of the Princess Quest ending where Gregory shattered all three animatronics, as comics depicting every ending except for it are present and the AR version of Vanny's room has the Princess' sword sticking out of the overturned Princess Quest III cabinet.

This was originally on Cutting Off the Branches, but I moved it since it involved elements from another ending (i.e. the Glamrocks being shattered despite that not being required for Princess Quest. However, since beating base game and getting the Princess Quest ending while shattering Monty and Chica is something you can do, does it still qualify as "Merging", or should it be moved back to Cutting?

(note I'm tired as shit and am probably overthinking it, but I just wanted to be sure)

This is on the Franchise Zombie page:

  • Taylor Swift's Live from Clear Channel Stripped 2008 released in 2020 was recorded during the 2008 promotional tour of Fearless and was released by Swift's old label Big Machine Record (whom she had a huge and public falling out regarding the right of the masters of her albums during the time she was with them, one of which is Fearless) without her permission. She completely denounced the album and called it "tasteless" and "shameless greed in the time of coronavirus".

My issue with this paragraph is that if the album had been released soon after it was recorded, it wouldn’t be considered a “zombie”.

Is this a shoehorn? It's about Neo from RWBY. I'm asking because I don't think I've ever seen anyone in the fandom describe her Master of Illusion Semblance as "unimpressive" before. While Neo does become a nightmare in Volume 9 (due to The Wonderland setting transforming her Semblance into something that's borderline Reality Warper), she was introduced as a higher-tier fighter than the heroes, with a very powerful Semblance they couldn't do much about and who regularly thwarted them as a result. I don't think she fulfills the "Nobody" part of the trope.

  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Downplayed. She starts out as Roman's sidekick with good combat prowess but an unimpressive Semblance and little significance. By Volume Nine, her powers now allow her to construct buildings and conjure armies of autonomous beings, and her grief over Roman's death drives her to ruthlessly hunt down Team RWBY for vengeance. She ultimately succeeds where the likes of Cinder failed numerous times and drives Ruby to Ascend, though this causes Neo to realize her own emptiness.
