Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/NoRealLifeExamplesPlease via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]

LRLEO tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/LimitedRealLifeExamplesOnly via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]
%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

Fold-Spindle Mutilation and Dead Man's Chest are too controversial and attract gorey examples about real deaths

That's not what "too controversial" means, and for most gore-y death tropes we just go with NREP.

[up] Yeah, other Cruel and Unusual Death tropes have No Recent Examplesplease limit of a 150 years. I think both Dead Man's Chest and Fold-Spindle Mutilation should follow the same rules.

[up] We can always add both to the next NREP crowner. If agreed, I think that would clear out all the case-specific RL examples?

[tup] to Functional Addict and Bridezilla on this crowner and the two Cruel and Unusual Death subtropes for NREP.

Changeling Tale is an interesting one. It was brought up a couple of months ago but discussion kinda stalled, but we couldn't decide if brood parasitism (like when cuckoos lay their eggs in other birds' nests so they can raise their babies for them) was a valid example, or if the trope requires magic (like fairies or elves) to truly count as an example. I, personally, think this is a trope that ought to require magic (compare Mr. Seahorse), when one real species of animal switches their own babies with another real species that's not similar to when a fairy or a goblin or whatever takes a human baby and replaces it with a non-human baby. I'd like to hear more discussion though.

Laconic.Changeling Tale says it involves fairies so unless you want to make a TRS request to expand the definition, it's going to be a NRLEP because fairies don't exist in real life.

If we were to expand the scope of the trope, then it needs to be renamed too to account for non-fairy based swapping.

[up]Okay, I suppose that's a good argument.

Hard Work Hardly Works is Too Common, attracting general examples, a lot of averted examples, and averted general examples. It might also be Characterization.

For that matter, Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs is the third in a trio with Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking and Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick, and is just as much Narrative and Too Common as those twonote .

The New Rock & Roll's "Other" section is essentially a real life section, and is attracting ROCEJ violations and unnecessary snark.

[up]The New Rock & Roll is a cousin to the recently NRLEP'd Moral Guardians and the terrible RL examples are reminding me of Two Decades Behind. [tup] to crownering.

Misery Poker is another cousin to a recently NRLEP'd trope (in this case Appeal to Worse Problems), and like ATWP it's Too Controversial.

[up] and [up][up]Calling the Real Life folder in The New Rock & Roll "Other" is a sneaky way to get away with real-life examples in a trope that attracts ROCEJ violations and snarky complaining.

Is Misery Poker attracting bad real life examples? Because it doesn't look like it's attracting any real life examples at all.

Once again, we should be paying attention to what's actually on the page and not just nominate tropes just because we feel concept should be NRLEP. This is a clean up thread first and foremost.

Not really. It's just color theory. The trope covers more than just "aggressive characters are in red", and so do the examples in the RL section itself.

Regarding the real life examples on Monster Fangirl:

I just don't think calling real people "monster" is a good idea, even if they're murderers, rapists and other things like that. Plus the way these real life examples are worded comes off to me as gushing over serial killers, it may be not the intention but still.

I think this real life folder need to be abridged or completely removed.

While this may not be a real life section of any trope, I think this entry in YMMV.Miranda Sings is a bit inappropriate:

While it might just refer to parts of the Miranda character rather than the person behind it, it still seems to be troping real life, while also coming off as a ZCE. What should be done with it?

It's definitely the character. Miranda is characterized by her terrible makeup sense, toilet and gas related humor... and having an incestuous uncle. None of this has anything to do with Colleen Ballinger as a person.

On the back of the recent ATT about Dead Person Impersonation - it sounds as if there wasn't a NRLEP consensus on it here, but if the modern true crime examples are getting problematic, is there a wish to add a 50 or 100 year No Recent Examples, Please! rule to RL instead?

Eh, I don't see those examples as being that problematic but if people are concerned I guess it could be NREP'd. Like I don't see a huge need, but eh.

[up] I guess we can always take the view that if recent examples go into death/murder detail, we already have a 150 year NREP on RL Cruel and Unusual Death and several related tropes, so this shouldn't be an excuse to list those details.

And as that's not what this trope is about, it shouldn't need them?

The Illuminati is attracting ROCEJ-questionable troping of conspiracy theories and the mention in its description of the IRL Illuminati is sufficient context for the rest of the trope, making the RL section problematic and unnecessary. The first RL example in there referring to the IRL Illuminati and their becoming part of conspiracy folklore courtesy of the French Revolution is interesting context, but would better serve the trope as a truncated version in the description or on an Analysis page.

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
