Release: January 24, 2017

Film: The Smurfs 2

Tagline: Just when you thought you couldn’t feel more blue, the Smurfs return to force their horrors down our throats.

  • Abusive Parents: One segment has Tamara coming in and telling how her drunk, abusive grandfather called her up and said that even at birth he never considered her part of the family. The Critic acts like that was not as heinous as Victor giving Blue a paper hat.
  • Call-Back: Seeing that he is reviewing another Smurfs movie, the Critic contacts Andre the Black Nerd, with whom he reviewed the first film, and tries to rope him in on this one, too. Unfortunately for the Critic, Andre is unwilling to travel to the Critic's studio in the dead of winter for the sake of reviewing The Smurfs 2.
  • Captain Obvious: The Critic's reaction to the Smurfs deducing that Gargamel was behind Smurfette's kidnapping.
  • Continuity Reboot: After a Patrick and Papa Smurf heart-to-heart, the Critic jokes that Patrick will continue to botch the film so much, Sony will have to reboot the franchise. In Real Life, following the poor reception to this film, the second of a planned trilogy, the Smurfs film series was to be rebooted with Smurfs: The Lost Village on April 2017.
  • Demographically Inappropriate Humourinvoked: A scene of Hackus playing with a Gargamel action figure in a manner that looks like he is doing a doggystyle is so suggestive the Critic takes a screenshot of it and even encourages the Internet to have its way with it.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The Critic points out that Victor as a duck has a black stripe on his beak that makes him look like Adolf Hitler.
  • Dramatic Drop: NC parodies what it would be like if someone was channel surfing and they came on the spot with Patrick yelling at his transformed stepfather with no context, making him drop the bottle of wine he was drinking.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even when presented with an opportunity for a Mr. Yunioshi joke, the Critic is leery of making it because he claims he wants to keep his channel.
  • Felony Misdemeanor: Jokes are made about how Victor, Patrick's stepfather, being a good grandfather is considered a bad thing. He especially takes issue with Patrick's Freudian Excuse (Victor releasing a bird he loved as a child).
  • Flipping the Bird: At an in-movie The Empire Strikes Back Shout-Out to the infamous "Luke, I Am Your Father" moment (with Gargamel reminding Smurfette that he is her "father"), Darth Vader pops in beside the Critic to double-flip Gargamel off, before doing his infamous Big "NO!" from Revenge of the Sith.
  • Foreshadowing: Malcolm's character is named "Bill", as in Bill Murray. This comes full circle at the end, when he and Tamara pressure the Critic into extending "Sequel Month: the Sequel" with Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties, where Murray will reprise his role as the titular fat cat.
  • Gangbangers: When the Critic contacts Andre, he finds out the hard way that he's got a whole different persona when he's not reviewing stuff in his nerd persona.
  • I Can't Believe I'm Saying This: The Critic is baffled at having to describe the previous Smurfs movie as a smash-hit.
  • It Will Never Catch On: The Critic jokes that the child actor who plays Blue will probably not be earning awards any time soon. Then the scene cuts to a poster of Room, revealing that the child actor is Jacob Tremblay, who for his role as Jack Newsome earned a 2016 Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role, much to the surprise of the Critic, who then rewords his rant to indicate that this film is a waste of good talent.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: In response to the movie's "Martin Luther Wing" joke, Darth Vader shows up and flips off the movie.
Critic: But that wasn't Star Wars related.
Vader: It just feels good, okay?
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Andre the Black Nerd criticizes the Nostalgia Critic for having a less active life than himself.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Discussed when it comes to Vexy and Hackus being part of Gargamel's group despite having never been shown in the last movie. Parodied when he talks to Bill (Malcolm), asking if he hates it when that happens. Enforced further with Tamara having a detailed past with Bill.
  • Rummage Sale Reject: Bill (Malcolm) dresses in various, garish outfits without concern for design or symmetry.
  • Sequelitis: That this film managed to be worse than the first Smurfs film is, according to the Critic, quite the unenviable achievement.
  • Sequel Hook: At the end of the review, Tamara and "Bill" chastise the Critic for only reviewing two movies for Sequel Month. They manage to convince the Critic to review one more sequel, and the video ends on a Cliffhanger... only for "Bill" to hold up a sign saying the next review will be Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The film's own take on Breakfast at Tiffany's (with Grace disguising herself as a wealthy Frenchwoman that looks like Audrey Hepburn's Holly Golightly so she can gain access to a high-class hotel where Gargamel was staying) has the Critic wondering why there isn't a horribly racist stereotype like Mr. Yunioshi.
    • Scenes of Smurfette toying with Gargamel's dragon wand is dubbed over with Jules Winnfield's "As the Good Book Says..." moments.
    • "AFLAC, MOTHERFUCKER!"
  • Subverted Catchphrase: "I'm the Nostalgia Critic, and thank God it's finally over!"
  • Take That!: The Critic deems Blue's actor's performance to be so dreary that he compiles a clip of his acting with a brief cut to that by Jake Lloyd as young Anakin Skywalker... although later surprised to learn that it's the same kid from Room.
  • Tempting Fate: When Darth Vader appears and flips the bird, as mentioned above:
Critic: At least he didn't do the—
(Vader returns and gives the infamous Big "NO!" from Revenge of the Sith, to the Critic's regret)
  • This Is for Emphasis, Bitch!: A variant. "AFLAC, MOTHERFUCKER!"
  • This Is Gonna Suck: The Critic starts the review in a dour mood, knowing full well what he's jumping into.
  • TouchĂ©: After Gangster Andre mocks him for not "having a life", the Critic retorts that he will prove otherwise by reviewing this film... only for his smug smile to turn into a misty-eyed frown, realizing that Andre had hit a nerve.
  • Welcome to Hell: The Critic literally uses this as a caption over Clumsy scaring Victor with a plushie he gave Blue.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: The Critic takes issue with the name of Patrick and Grace's son, Blue.
