Recap / My Gym Partners A Monkey S 1 E 1 Inoculation Day

Go To

Adam gets hit by an inoculation dart, turning him into a monkey.

  • Afraid of Needles: Jake revealed in this episode, that he's absolutely terrified of needles, cowering in fear at the very sight of them.
  • Animal Wrongs Group: The B.A.A.A. Activists.
  • Animorphism: Adam is transformed into a monkey, when he gets shot with an inoculation dart, chock-full of monkey pheromones.
  • Blow Gun: Nurse Gazelle used this to fire needles at people.
  • Blow You Away: Monkey-ified Adam screams loud enough to create a gust of air, which blows the entire school faculty, and a number of students down the hallway.
  • Characters Dropping Like Flies: Everyone in the main case, except for Adam himself, was inoculated very shortly after the dart firing started.
  • Comedic Underwear Exposure: The first of many. Adam takes his pants off, when turning into a monkey and wears his tightey whiteys around. He's seen, humanized again, when he turns back to normal and his clothes are still gone.
  • Don't Explain the Joke: This episode ended off with Jake making a stupid joke about his butt. It doesn't help that he needs to make it more and more obvious, just so that his friends will laugh.
Nurse Gazelle: It wasn't the dart alone, that took Adam out.
Jake: Yeah! It was booty killed the beast!
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: While it's subtle and easy to look past, Windsor's eyebrows are thicker and bushier in this episode, than they'd appear as in future episodes.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In the first scene of the episode, Adam appears rather grumpy, while Jake sits on his head and picks ticks out of his hair. His first line of dialogue in the series is "Whoever said monkeys and humans share the same genes is an idiot."
  • Foreshadowing: Adam foreshadowed the plot of the episode in scene one, when he said "Thank goodness, I'm not a monkey."
  • Fun with Homophones: Adam and Jake's quick exchange of dialogue, where Jake confuses "Genes" for "Jeans".
Adam: Whoever said monkeys and humans share the same genes is an idiot.
Jake: I'll say. Monkeys don't even wear jeans.
  • Girls Have Cooties: Coach Gills gets the willies, when she's in the boy's bathroom.
  • The Hunter Becomes the Hunted: Adam is hunted by Nurse Gazelle. An animal, that would normally be hunted by himself, as a human.
  • Hypocrite: The B.A.A.A. Activists are people fixated on the ethical treatment of animals, yet they commonly go out for burgers.
  • I Will Find You: Principal Pixiefrog does a variant of this stock phrase.
Pixiefrog: Today is inoculation day. All students must be given inoculation darts. And don't worry. If you can't find us, we'll find you.
  • Injection Plot: The students of CDMS have to get their inoculation darts. Adam accidentally gets the one meant for Jake, so he starts turning into a monkey.
  • "King Kong" Climb: In the form of a monkey, Adam climbs up Ingrid's neck.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: You know your pun is bad, when even Slips doesn't find it funny. That's exactly what happened to Jake, when he told his "Booty killed the beast" joke at the end of the episode.
  • Leaving Audience: Adam, Slips, Windsor, Lupe, and Ingrid, when Jake kept telling his joke. Yep, even his own friends abandoned him.
  • Long Neck: Ingrid's neck was mistaken for a tower and climbed on by Adam. It also left a bit of fall damage on Adam, when he was taken down.
  • Non-Indicative First Episode: This isn't the first day of school, or the day of Adam's transfer to CDMS. This episode could take place at pretty much any moment in the series.
  • Out of Focus: Despite being one of the main cast members, Slips Python has no dialogue in this episode.
    • It's also notable that Mr. Hornbill, Mr. Mandrill, Mrs. Tusk, and Miss Chameleon all appear in the group of teachers, but none of them have lines. In fact, right after the introduction of the established team, they are completely absent in all future scenes, with no explanation as to why they left.
  • Pig Latin: Coach Gills says "Aketay the Otshay" to Nurse Gazelle.
  • Sanity Slippage: Adam went though this, when he started transforming into a monkey.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: Jake assumes this will happen to him if he gets a shot. As it turns out, this is actually the way Principal Pixiefrog reacted to getting captured by Adam.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Coach Gills' initial reacting to Adam's primate problem. She wanted to skip town and join the circus.
  • Shot in the Ass: Lupe got this.
  • Shout-Out: To King Kong, with the transformed Adam climbing Ingrid's neck holding Principal Pixiefrog who is wearing a mop as a wig. Nurse Gazelle's eulogy at the end of the episode cements the reference, leading to Jake's "booty killed the beast" joke.
  • Shrunken Organ: Nurse Gazelle states that her brain is the size of an underdeveloped peanut ... and later a soy nut.
  • Side Effects Include...: The label on Jake's inoculation dart took a jab at this trope "Monkey Booster: May cause adverse reaction in humans. Never ever ever ever ever ever EVER give to people EVER! Don't do it, man!"
  • Straw Vegetarian: The burger loving B.A.A.A. Activists.
  • Urine Trouble: Adam was grossed out, when a stream of pee came from Jake and landed on his head, but the camera zoomed out, revealing he was just spitting a stream of apple juice through a straw.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: At the beginning of the episode, a team of faculty members teamed up to take down Adam. This team consisted of Principal Pixiefrog, Nurse Gazelle, Coach Gills, Horace Ferret, Mr. Hornbill, Miss Chameleon, Mr. Mandrill, and Mrs. Tusk. However, starting with the scene, where they were in the bathroom, the latter half of that list were absent from all scenes from then on, with no explanation.
  • Your Size May Vary: Ingrid's neck experienced this, while Adam was climbing her. Although neck extension is common for her, it also got thicker, now taking up half the screen too.
