Quotes / But Now I Must Go

Go To

"Since I am in the midst of my travels...I must bid you farewell. Shouldn't you be returning home as well? Whenever there is a meeting, a parting is sure to follow. However, that parting need not last forever... Whether a parting be forever or merely for a short time...that is up to you. With that, please excuse me..."
The Happy Mask Salesman from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

"There is something you should understand about the way that I work. When you need me, but do not want me, then I must stay. When you want me but no longer need me, then I have to go."
Nanny McPhee

"After defeating the 'Planetforger', 'Sombress' and 'Kerykeion' bid farewell to those who remained. I don’t know where they are headed to, but the fragments of power of the 'Planetforger' residing within them probably led them to watch over the Surface World somewhere out there."
Evilswarm Exciton Knight, Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Guide 4

"Hey, everyone! It's Goku, here! King Kai's letting me talk to you from the Other World now, so I really don't have that long. I remember something Bulma told me a long time ago, about how it always seems like I attract the bad guys...and when you stop and think about it, in a way, that's true. I think the world might just be safer without me. So, I know it might be hard on Chi-chi and Gohan, but don't bother wishing me back to life. Don't worry, we'll meet again one day, and I'll be waiting for you! Bye!"

Of all the comrades that e'er I had
They're sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I've loved
They'd wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be with you all
The Parting Glass, traditional Irish song

We fight for justice in a forgotten place
Fulfil our duty then vanish without a trace
The Hot Wind Blowing, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Charlize Theron: Aren't you gonna stick around?
Tom Hardy: Fuck no. I'm gonna do what Mad Max always does: wander into somebody else's problems, help out a bit while barely communicating, then take off. I'm basically the Littlest Hobo of the post-apocalypse. Why do people keep forgetting that?!?

Misato had tried to talk them out of it, but couldn't, so she just went down to the docks to see them off. She had a strong feeling this was goodbye.
Touji and Hikari came, of course. They were off to California - Touji to play college basketball and maybe learn something, and Hikari to definitely learn something - but that wouldn't be until the fall. They'd all graduated from high school, and now Shinji and Asuka were going to go sailing 'around the world'. But Misato knew they weren't coming back.

Meme Oshino: (flashback) Eventually, I'll be leaving this town.
Koyomi Araragi: Now I understand... When I came here yesterday and saw Oshino standing outside, he was in the middle of making his exit.
Meme Oshino: (flashback) I won't be vanishing into thin air all of a sudden without saying goodbye. Since I'm an adult, too. I know that's the proper thing to do.
Koyomi Araragi: Why didn't I realize it? That line was itself... It couldn't have been more obvious, really. That was his farewell. For someone who refused to say goodbye, who hated parting with people more than anyone else, that was the best proof of friendship that this awkward man could offer.

Gandalf: Here at last, on the shores of the sea, comes the end of our Fellowship. I will not say "do not weep", for not all tears are an evil. (walks towards ship) It is time, Frodo.
Sam: What does he mean?
Frodo: We set out to save the Shire, Sam, and it has been saved... but not for me.
Sam: You don't mean that... you can't leave!
(Frodo hands Sam the book)
Frodo: The last pages are for you, Sam.

There comes a time to leave the past behind you
And amongst you, is as good a place to hide
So out there in the shadows I remind you
That may be, Willy Wonka, by your side...

And so, my friend, my factory
Continue your routine
Let's say goodbye, for to new worlds I fly,
That are not yet conceived
And are not yet achieved
And they must be believed — to be seen...

Do I know where Hell is?
Hell is in "Hello!"
Heaven is "Goodbye forever!"
It's time for me to go.

Eliza: Um, maybe you shouldn't do that. I mean, since you're so tired... you might not be able to get back up.
Rebecca: That's the idea.
Eliza: (realization) Please, get up! If you're sick we'll find a vet and get you medicine! Rebecca...
Rebecca: I'm not sick, child. I'm just old.
Eliza: But we can take you to the preserve, and Jomo will take good care of you!
Rebecca: No one needs to take care of me, Eliza. I have raised a lot of calves who are now raising calves of their own. I've been head of the herd for more seasons than I can count. And... my time has come.
The Wild Thornberrys, "Forget Me Not"

There's a voice that keeps on calling me
Down the road, that's where I'll always be
Every stop I make, I make a new friend,
Can't stay for long, just turn around, I'm gone again
Maybe tomorrow, I'll want to settle down,
Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on
Terry Bush, The Littlest Hobo "Maybe Tomorrow"

Longinus: (packing weapons crates into the boot of his car) Ajay! So good to see you.
Ajay: You going somewhere?
Longinus: It is finished! My work here is done, and now the Lord is calling me elsewhere.
Ajay: Where to?
Longinus: South America, I think. Or perhaps Cuba. There are still many sins for me to atone for. Thank you, Ajay. Thank you for showing me that there are still true believers willing to do righteous work. It is a debt that will not be forgotten. I have left you something as a token of my gratitude. Mark 16, verse 15. And he said unto them, "Go forth into the world, and proclaim the gospel to the whole of creation!" Go forth now, Ajay, and preach your own sermons.

Shaman: There could be a place here for you. There are women who would have you. Men who would embrace you as one of their own.
Conan: I am not a Pict.
Shaman: You are not a Hyborean either. You do not belong among civilized men, Conan. You know this. You belong among your own kind. Among the savages. You belong on this side of the river.
Conan:...I don't belong anywhere. Not for long at least. If I want a home, I'll have to make it for myself. With my own bloody hands and the weapons they're holding.
Conan the Barbarian (2019) #2 "The Savage Border"

Andrew Luck: ENOUGH! I can't do this anymore, I'm leaving. LOL.
(a crowd of players gasp in shock before the camera zooms in on Larry Fitzgerald)
Larry Fitzgerald: You can do that?
Luck: Remember, you can always find me in the throw of a football. (Luck disappears into a pile of clothes) WHEEEEE!
Quentin Nelson: Was Andrew Luck real, or just a dream we all had?
T.Y. Hilton: He was real. He was damn real.

The Iron Giant: You stay. I go. No following.
Hogarth Hughes: ...I love you.

Lisa Simpson: (shouting) Hey, Mr. Bergstrom!
Mr. Bergstrom: (smiling warmly) Hey, Lisa.
Lisa: (panting) "Hey, Lisa", indeed.
Bergstrom: What, what is it? Oh...
Lisa: Were you just going to leave, just like that?
Bergstrom: Aw, I'm sorry, Lisa. It's the life of the substitute teacher. He's a fraud. Today, he might be wearing gym shorts. Tomorrow, he's speaking French, or pretending to know how to run a band saw, or God knows what.
Lisa: You can't go. You're the best teacher I'll ever have.
Bergstrom: Aw, that's not true. Other teachers will come along.
Lisa: Oh, please!
Bergstrom: No, I can't lie to you, I am the best, but they need me over in the projects of Capital City.
Lisa: (softly) But... I need you too.
Bergstrom: That's the problem with being middle class. Anybody who really cares will abandon you for those who need it more.
Lisa: I... I understand. Mr. Bergstrom, I'm going to miss you.
Bergstrom: I'll tell you what. (grabs a pen and notepad and jots something) Whenever you feel like you're alone, and there's nobody you can rely on, this is all you need to know.
(he folds the note and hands it to her)
Lisa: (tearing up) Thank you, Mr. Bergstrom.
Train Conductor: (O.C.) All aboard!
Lisa: So, I guess this is it. If you don't mind, I'll just run alongside the train as it speeds you from my life.
(Mr. Bergstrom nods, boards the train, takes a seat and opens its window)
Bergstrom: Goodbye, Lisa, honey! It will be okay. Just read the note!
(after the train leaves the station, Lisa takes a look at the note, which says "You are Lisa Simpson")
The Simpsons, "Lisa's Substitute"

Unico: (quietly) Sister, I have to say goodbye.
Corn: Goodbye!? You're leaving?
Unico: (smiles calmly) Yes. You see, I was only allowed to be here for one day. Please say hello... to mother for me.
Corn: (saddened) Won't you ever come back?
Unico: I don't know... I'm going to forget all about this place again, anyway...
Corn: Farewell.. and here's a goodbye kiss.
Unico, "A Hometown Visit"

Shane: I gotta be going on.
Joey: Why, Shane?
Shane: A man has to be what he is, Joey. Can't break the mold. I tried it and it didn't work for me.
Joey: We want you, Shane.
Shane: Joey, there's no living with... with a killing. There's no going back from one. Right or wrong, it's a brand. A brand sticks. There's no going back. Now you run on home to your mother, and tell her... tell her everything's all right. And there aren't any more guns in the valley.
Joey: Shane... [Joey notices that Shane is wounded] It's bloody! You're hurt!
Shane: I'm all right, Joey. You go home to your mother and father and grow up to be strong and straight. And, Joey... take care of them, both of them.
Shane
